MONEY MANAGEMENT

WHAT'S THE SECRET HIGHLY PROFITABLE TRADERS POSSESS IN FUTURES TRADING THAT YOU DON'T? Let me first say that if you read all the hype that websites spew on their profits it would lead one to think that futures trading is like owning an ATM machine. You simply need to push a button and money comes shooting out. Futures' trading is not a "get rich" quick proposition; on the contrary, futures' trading is a tough business and it takes time, experience and extraordinary patience to succeed. Having said that, the prepared trader can earn substantial sums with a bit of determination and perseverance; if you approach the business with that attitude you just might succeed. Before I lead you on about some "secret" I have to admit there are no secrets to successful trading. There are,

however, some important traits that all successful traders I have known share. Like many things, the successful trader of today works in much the same way the legendary traders of years past. A successful trader possesses a specific skill set honed by experience and trading wisdom and is a constant student of futures trading. Believe me; you will never know too much to trade successfully. Consider these traits when considering a career in trading: 1. Determination. You are going to have days when you lose trades; sometimes you are going to have days when you lose more trades than you win. The ability to learn from your losses is paramount to your success. Trading knowledge is

ENIGMA

learned in small bits from education and reading charts and the more you have of these two commodities the better you will become. If you can't accept losing you will not succeed in this business. 2. Trading Technique. Great traders stick with a specific futures trading methodology and avoid mechanical systems for generating potential trade entries and exits. The market is an ever changing animal and if you are relying on a onesize-fits-all mechanical trading system the market is going to leave you in the dust. Great traders work with real-time indicators, especially short term traders like scalpers. Lagging indicators work fine for swing trading, but are problematic for short term traders.

AUGUST 28 2014

6

3. Experience. You are not going to read a couple of books and tear the futures market up, it just doesn't work that way. The old timers told me that you need 10,000 hours of chart time to be worth your salt. I think technology and futures trading education has shortened that time horizon considerably, but experience is valuable and chart time is a must. Learning to trade is a process and if it suits your personality type the three attributes outlined above will serve you well. Don't lock yourself into a mechanical system, be a trader "for all seasons."

American Dollars To Canadian Doughnuts Tim Hortons has long been a regular stop whenever I visit Canada. For one thing, I couldn't avoid Tim Hortons outlets if I wanted to; they're everywhere. I do genuinely like their doughnuts, however. The chain is the biggest coffee and doughnut seller in Canada and marked its 50th anniversary this spring. Given Tim Hortons' ubiquity and popularity, it is no surprise that American dollars are chasing Canadian doughnuts. News broke recently that Burger King Worldwide Inc. is engaged in talks to buy Tim Hortons. Should the deal succeed, the combined businesses would together have about $22 billion in sales, making the new fast-food company the world's third-largest. Burger King wouldn't only be securing a Canadian institution with habit-forming baked goods, though. It would also pick up a more favorable tax situation, courtesy of a move north of the border. In the proposed version of the merger,

Burger King would create a new, Canadian-based parent company, housing both independently operating chains. This structure would give Burger King domicile in Canada and preserve Tim Hortons' domicile there. While unnamed sources briefed in the deal told The New York Times that taxes were not the primary motivation behind the talks (1), Burger King is obviously aware of the tax implications. Canada cut its national corporate tax rate to its current level of 15 percent several years ago. (Companies there must also pay provincial taxes, meaning Ontario-based corporations such as Tim Hortons currently pay 26.5 percent total.) Meanwhile, the U.S. insists not only on a 35 percent federal corporate tax rate, plus state taxes in most places, but also on taxing corporations on earnings worldwide. Burger King doesn't currently hold much cash outside the country, the Times reported, but it may certainly have an eye on expansion in the future, both in Canada and elsewhere. (1)

Although Burger King is an American company, it is controlled by a Brazilian investment firm, 3G Capital, which owns about 70 percent of the company's shares. Why would Brazilians want to continue to pay U.S. tax on profits from burgers they sell in Buenos Aires or Hong Kong? There is no reason they would. Under the tax systems in place almost everywhere outside the United States, there is no reason they should, either. As for Burger King's American shareholders, like all corporate shareholders here, they are taxed twice: once on corporate profits and again when the corporation pays out dividends. This makes tax inversion - relocating a company's headquarters to a lower-tax nation, as Burger King may - an attractive prospect, even for American shareholders. It's worth noting, too, that those who criticize inversion most vehemently are almost always people whose income is only taxed once - and often, that income is a salary paid by taxpayers. The current president has made no secret of his displeasure with the practice. Obama and the Democrats have bleated about unpatriotic U.S. corporations, as if there were an inherent patriotic duty to have income earned abroad taxed back in the U.S at least once. In the wake of at least five large U.S. companies that have announced plans for inversions between mid-June and late July, Obama criticized a herd mentality at play in the decisions, calling the companies "corporate deserters who renounce their citizenship to shield profits." (2) This characterization imagines corporations are owned by nobody, or by Martians, who otherwise lack citizenship elsewhere on Earth. The administration is said to be looking for a way to make inversions difficult or impossible in the future. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has acknowledged that his agency is seeking ways to hinder or stop inversions without the need for legislative support from Congress.

However, unlike government-regulated banks, which under pressure have forked over billions of dollars in penalties for real and imagined offenses, most private corporations have legal teams that are well used to challenging rulings from the Internal Revenue Service. We have an active and independent Tax Court in this country. The IRS is a frequent litigant and a not-infrequent loser, especially when it faces adversaries with technical knowledge and financial resources, such as are available to major corporations. If the administration wants to challenge inversions using, shall we say, novel interpretations of the tax law, it should not expect most of corporate America to roll over the way that the banks have. Even if the government succeeds in making inversions impractical for U.S.-based companies, it is unlikely to be pleased with the result. Blocking inversions here will only turn American companies into takeover targets for foreign businesses. Acquirers will simply buy U.S. companies and relocate the headquarters, or their assets, once the deal is complete. In the process, even more American jobs will be lost. When Canada lowered its corporate tax rate, critics warned that the move would be disastrous for Canadian federal government revenues. If the Burger King inversion is any indication, an attractive tax structure can more than make up for a lower rate by drawing new and existing businesses to establish headquarters in Canada. The sensible thing is to recognize once again that neither Martians nor corporations pay taxes. Shareholders and customers - in other words, people - do. If those people have no connection to the U.S. other than a corporation's legal domicile, they will find ways to sever their ties rather than fund a foreign government at exorbitant rates.

STAMFORD, Conn. (UPI) - An English woman who was expecting to be on her honeymoon is instead enjoying an impromptu American vacation after her former fiance attempted to fake his own suicide to get out of marrying her. “‘I’m a terrible, awful person,” Tucker Blandford, the 23-year-old former groom to be, admitted to the Daily Mail. Blandford met his former fiancee, Alex Lanchester, also 23, in 2012 when Lanchester was studying abroad as a film student visiting the University of Connecticut. The

two quickly became close and started dating. “Tucker was such a gentleman and was always buying me dinner and beautiful vintage jewelry,” Lanchester recalled. “I’d never been in love like that before. Every Sunday he would take me out for pancakes, it was so sweet.” When Lenchester’s time in the U.S. ended, Blandford proposed to her. As Lenchester planned for their wedding, set for August 15, Blandford grew increasingly uncomfortable with the long-distance relationship. Unable to face the pressure of committing to Lenchester or breaking up with her, Blandford concocted a plan to

ENIGMA

fake his own suicide. Pretending to be his father, Blandford called Lenchester and delivered the news that he suffered from depression and had jumped into the path of a moving car. The grim ruse quickly unraveled when Lenchester phoned Blandford’s mother to offer her condolences. “He has shattered my trust and I’m not sure I’ll ever be in a relationship again,” Lanchester said. “All I ever did was love him ... I’ve cried until I felt numb but now I’m just really angry. I’ll be spending our would-be wedding day making new memories without him. He’s a liar and a coward.”

MADISON, Wis. (UPI) - A 24-year-old woman who “loves giraffes” was kicked in the face after she entered the giraffe enclosure at the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison. Amanda Hall climbed into the exhibit so she could get up close and personal with a 2-year-old giraffe named Wally. The 12-foot-tall animal first licked Hall and then he booted her in the face. Hall sustained non-life threatening injuries and Wally was not harmed. “Imagine if that animal came into your house, how would

you feel about that? You would probably be nervous and excited, so an animal is going to have a similar experience, have a similar response. Be a little nervous and excited and that is probably what happened in this case,” zoo curator Jeff Stafford told 27 News. Hall was cited for harassment of zoo animals, an offense that carries a fine of $686. Things could have been much worse for Hall because giraffes are capable of delivering blows that can kill lions. CROATIA - A Croatian man known as “the Penis Collector” has been arrested for allegedly abusing his position as a hospital nurse to amass a large collection of human organs, taken from the bodies of dead patients. The unnamed 52year-old man, who worked as a registered nurse at a city hospital in Slavonski Brod, was arrested last week on charges of disturbing the deceased. In his apartment, police found “glass jars” full of penises, preserved in formaldehyde. Presumably pickle jars. “On behalf of all employees of the hospital, I have to say that we are very unpleasantly surprised by an event that threw a shadow over this hospital,” a hospital spokesperson said. “Our apologies to families of the deceased.” According to reports, the suspect is “a family man” with no previous criminal record. It’s not clear what led police to the man and his morbid collection. But if I were to hazard a guess it might be all of the dickless corpses that show up after his shift. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (UPI) - A South Carolina woman was arrested

Monday for allegedly beating a man in his 60s, after the man drunkenly passed gas in her face. Witnesses told police that 33-yearold Jessica Cerney was asleep on her couch in her Myrtle Beach residence when 64-year-old Darrell McNight entered the home and farted in her face. “[McKnight] came into the house intoxicated and ‘passed gas’ is [Cerney’s] face while she was laying on the couch,” according to the police report obtained by the Smoking Gun. In the initial report, the names of both parties were omitted. “[Cerney] walked outside to get away from [an] intoxicated [McKnight] but [McKnight] walked out also. The two were arguing over the incident and [McKnight] walked toward [Cerney] cursing in a “threatening manner.” [Cerney] stated that she pulled her arms down and when McKnight bent down she struck him in the face approximately three times with a closed fist.” McKnight had to be taken to the hospital for treatment to a swollen right eye while Cerney, unless she develops a case of delayed pinkeye, did not suffer any injuries. Both parties were issued citations for fighting. It is unclear if they knew each other prior to the incident.

sound showed no fetus — although there was an inexplicable growth in her intestines. Recounted and reenacted for Discovery Fit & Health’s anything-but-subtle medical scare docudrama, the unfortunate teenage contestant’s condition became clear upon a fateful trip to the bathroom. “It was a toilet bowl full of tapeworms,” Cabral-Osorio recalled. “It was so gross and she had pooped all these tapeworms. There were a couple that were very long and wiggling around trying to get out of the toilet bowl.” Having passed the parasites, the teen was then assumed to be fine. But one question remained — how did she get the tapeworms in the first place? After an apparent fight between the mother and daughter, it became clear the mother bought a pill of tapeworm eggs in Mexico and forced her daughter to take it to lose weight for an upcoming pageant. “We were wondering how did she get those tapeworms, and then you saw the mom turn white,” CabralOsorio said. “The mom was apologizing to the girl. It’s like ‘I’m so sorry. You know, I did it just to make you a little skinnier. Rifle is hunting country with outfitters offering to help visitors track down and shoot elk and deer roaming the nearby high-country forests and canyons. Legend says the area got its name when a surveyor left his gun leaning against a tree and marked his map with “rifle” to remind himself where it was. In May, the Denver-based Chipotle burrito chain asked gun owners to stop bringing guns into the company’s stores following a series of demonstrations from strident Second Amendment supporters in Texas. And last year, Starbucks also asked gun owners to leave their weapons behind when buying coffee. However, in Rifle, Boebert said the local Starbucks franchisee has no problem when she walks in wearing her Springfield XDS .45. A sign on the front door welcomes armed patrons and asks them to abide by the same rules but adds, “in such cases, judicious marksmanship appreciated.” “There’s no point to be made,” Boebert said as her waitresses refilled ketchup bottles and wiped down menus, readying for the dinner rush. “This is our way of life.”

Fall Out Boy/ No Paramore/ New Politics Gexa Energy Pavilion Dallas, Texas healing old wounds. Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley are blessed they were able to overcome the emotional scars that drove them apart in 2009. Rarely does any group make a successful run at a second chance in the unforgiving click and download world we now live in. Fall Out Boy, not only has defied the overwhelming odds of becoming yesterday’s news, but their victory lap in their third nationwide tour in 14 months is Time as they say, has a way of well deserved. Gaining entry into the very exacting and callous world of music is difficult enough. Getting your foot in the extremely crowded door and actually making a name for yourself is half the battle. Staying together as a group, however, is where the war is actually won. Unfortunately for Fall Out Boy, they lost that skirmish the first time around as internal strife ripped them apart. As it turned out, the battle was far from over.

Back-up generators finally kicked in about 20 minutes later and the stage, literally, was set. The way this evening had already played itself out, you had come to expect the unexpected. Did I mention the flooding situation in the pit area and seating areas up front? The deluge was so heavy that several mini streams were created from the back of the sloped seated pavilion with no place to go but down. This is the third time Fall Out Boy has played Dallas in 14 months. Arguably, it was its most memorable appearance. The band is now embarking on sort of victory lap with this summer tour before it retreats into the studio to create another record. Politics. They put on a tremendous show and helped people forget their disappointment that the other main attraction was a noshow. They won thousands of fans over in the process. The highlight of their performance was singer David Boyd’s incredible break dancing on stage. I mean, who knew a white guy from a tiny European country could bust out in the kind of moves this guy displayed while guitarist Soren Hansen and drummer Louis Vecchio provided the background music. As it would turn out, a tremendous rainstorm greeted New Politics as their show got underway. Thousands of people milling about on the lawn and in the concession areas made a mad dash to the covered seating areas to keep themselves dry. Before you knew it, New Politics was playing to a packed house. It played right into the band’s hands.

Normally, the opening act on a three-bill show is overlooked because most the people in attendance just don’t care to see them. This crowd had bought tickets anticipating performances by both Paramore and Fall Out Boy, not New Politics. The Danes took full advantage of their situation. Not only did they take over Paramore’s time slot, but with the rain pouring down and everyone paying attention to them, the trio put on a great show. It was unfortunate that a power outage on stage ended New Politics set. The band was really getting the crowd pumped up with their cover version of Panic! for FFrr aaggiill ee. Here is the one thing you need to know about YES fans. We know every note to every song performed during the heyday of YES. Most importantly, we know exactly how the music is supposed to sound. If any instrument is off key slightly, or the vocal portion of the composition altered in any way, shape or sound, the song is ruined. That is why it was vital that YES get the vocals right – which they did with Jon Davidson. He has the right DNA to pull off the Jon Anderson sound. As I watched YES go through the motions, and that’s what it seemed like in the beginning of the show, I found myself focusing in on Geoff Downes attempts to mimic Rick Wakeman’s musicianship without trying to insert any of his personality into the numbers. DOLPHINS RALLY LATE RATTLE ROMO AROUND

The Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins have played in some of the most memorable games in NFL history. With a lot of questions on both sides of the ball for both teams, Week three is the only thing I have only one thing to say to close coaches and fans will see any Falcons opponent this seaof a regular game for another son. Ryan and a few additional playmakers left many speechless as Atlanta sprinted to a 17-10 halftime lead. And to be honest, it should have been more. My impressions of my extended look at the Falcons’ first string offense are as follows:

Wow, Devin Hester is fast. I had only seen Hester play in person once a few years back when he was with the Bears and somehow the Falcons kept him in check. Saturday Hester caught a short slant pass from Ryan and looked like he was shot out of a cannon as he split the secondary in half and ran untouched for a 31-yard touchdown. To think he’ll be a fourth receiver in this offense. Once again – wow.

“We were very explosive. I tip my hat off to the offensive linemen. They gave Matt (Ryan) a lot of time to deliver the ball and put it in the right place. As receivers, we came up and made some big plays. Last week, we didn’t play up to our part, so we wanted to make sure that we solved some of those problems that we had,” said Hester.

know how to slide. Ryan was an efficient 19-of-23 for 224 yards and two scores, but he really wasn’t able to stretch the field. All of his completions were short to midrange at best. entire preseason, there is hope he’ll help more the chains better than Jacquizz Rodgers Saturday. Rodgers was unable to make the first down on a fourth and one as the half drew to a close deep in Titans territory, giving up the ball on downs. Rodgers is a fast back but he’s not going to break many tackles. That’s where the power of Jackson comes in handy. No one else really showed much in the game. It was as if a running play was called so the receivers could have a play off from running routes.

the run the whole half getting sacked twice and hurried on almost every throw. When Locker was able to get time in the pocket he picked apart the Atlanta secondary. With 2:40 to go in the half he was able to hit Nate Washington for a 63-yard touchdown to make the score 1710 at the half.

Locker played like a man who knows his time may be running out as a starter for the Titans. Locker, who has been injuryprone is a great drop back passer. He has been somewhat mobile under center and isn’t afraid to run. Of course he’s had to use his legs more than he’s like to since the wide receiver corps are something to be desired in Tennessee – and quite frankly always have been going back to their Super Bowl heyday back in 1999. That being said, Nate Washington is starting to make a name for himself

helping to stretch the field as Locker is a far better vertical passer than anyone else that has put on a Titans uniform. Except maybe Zach Mettenberger. Mettenberger, the sixth round pick out of LS continues to impress. He’s still a wild card and admittedly he’s playing against reserves, but for the second week he was impressive under center. The rookie rallied the Titans leading them to 14 unanswered points in the second half to lead the charge. While Mettenberger’s numbers weren’t as good as Locker’s he was able to lead the Titans to three scores

Backup Charlie Whitehurst didn’t even see action, and quite frankly didn’t need to. The Titans have a stronger running game, but as far as receivers go there is no comparison between the two. The Falcons now have a four-headed monster for Ryan to throw to – Jones, White, Douglas and now Hester. If they can all stay healthy, there is no telling what they can do. The offensive strategy in trying to run a little more time off the clock is helping to give the defense a little more rest. Instead of scoring on drives averaging four minutes or less, the Falcons have been taking between six and seven minutes. Granted, if need be, they can strike fast and furious, but it is sometimes better to give your defense a little more time to catch their breath. “We have a lot of playmakers on this team. It is going to be tough to cover, when we are all on the field at the same time. We want to make it tough for defensive coordinators to match up with us on the outside,” said White.

The Falcons first team was head and shoulders above the Titans but Tennessee seems to have a deeper, if not more experienced bench. The Titans are loaded at quarterback and running back.

This week’s exhibition games will feature a lot of players who may never suit up again in an NFL game. It is reserve hell for fans as everyone will need their scorecard to figure out who’s out there. It will also be a good time for some players to work off a little rust and get more acquainted with their new team. The Falcons travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars and the Titans host the Minnesota Vikings. More interesting than this game will be who makes the cut and who doesn’t – and there are usually some surprises.
