Dear Rocco, I have written a few books that I’ve self-published. They’ve gotten a good review or two but have only sold marginally online and in a local bookstore. Dear Rocco, My friend and I moved into a new condo in town that was recently built. We both had pretty good jobs when we signed the lease. But things started to go south after a few months. First, it seemed like I was the only one buying groceries. Sure we both bought some but I stocked the place with the staples while he bought things here and there – usually stuff only he eats – snacks and stuff. My roommate lost his job and still hasn’t found work now. He’s asked me to pay a bigger part of our rent until he finds another job. That was fine the first month or two, but now it’s been four months and all he seems to do is surf the net and eat the groceries that only I am buying now. Any suggestions? WB

moments. I first observed Millennials bad driving habits a few years ago prior to my retiring from the Chattanooga Police Department. I was driving on Highway 153 when I encountered a vehicle driving about 45 miles an hour in the middle lane. As I pulled alongside it I observed a young male looking down and I tried to make eye contact. He finally looked up to see where he was going. I stopped him and we had a discussion about his driving. I would have given him a ticket but I was a detective and did not really feel like going to traffic court. Soon after this I attended a Governor’s Highway Safety meeting where the topic was young drivers and texting and the number of crashes and fatalities that this dangerous phenomenon was causing. So Millennials please stop this. The person you save might be yours truly or someone I love. While Millennials texting is scary enough I have noticed them also seemingly running red lights frequently. I wondered if there was any research to back up my observation. There is. According to an article published in the Washington Post citing a study conducted by the AAA Foundation For Traffic Safety Millennials are more likely than any other age group to exceed the speed limit by 10 to 15 miles an hour, run a red light when they could have stopped, read or sent a text while driving and be high on marijuana. Ok now I’m really scared. I have also noticed a marked decrease in the use of turn signals when vehicles are turning and also for lane changes. This is not just a safety issue but it is common courtesy. Several times lately I have sat waiting on a vehicle only to have it turn without a turn signal. Sure one time there was no vehicle behind it

but I could have pulled out if the person had let me know they were turning. But often that means they would have to let go of their phone to reach up and flip that little lever letting other drivers know their intentions. Perhaps I am just ranting… perhaps not. While we are talking about that courtesy thing, the friend who suggested this article has a pet peeve about Millennials not moving out of the fast lane. There is a slowpoke law in Tennessee that says you are required to yield to faster traffic. The problem is that speeding Millennials (remember the study?) slow down to text or read texts and don’t realize that they have slowed down. I’ve seen them realize this and then speed back up often while a car or cars are trying to pass them in the slow lane. While I’m on the manners thing, it used to be that when you saw a car trying to merge from an onramp or whatever if you were on a multi lane highway or road that you would move over if possible to let that car merge. Millenials have not been taught this lost art. I have sat and waited for a car to get by me with the other lane open for “miles” but the driver would not get over. Usually it’s a Millennial often with a phone planted to their ear or glancing down at their lap, which I assume holds a phone. Sometimes they are looking at the dash where their phone is suspended by a cradling device some helpful person designed to help get me killed. Is that a little harsh? I don’t think so. I ride a motorcycle and ride in fear that I will be hit by someone selfishly looking at their phone and not the road.

When a North Carolina woman got into a fight with her boyfriend she tried to bite off his testicles, among other things. Local news outlets have reported that despite ripping open her boyfriend’s scrotum, apparently with her teeth, a jury found 54-year-old Martinne Delavega not guilty of malicious castration. The boyfriend testified that he punched her head to stop her as she bit his chest and arms and ripped open his

scrotum during an argument. But when Delavega took the stand she claimed she was defending herself from his assault. The jury agreed with her. The boyfriend says he still has psychological and physical problems. I’m sure you’ve heard of probiotics. Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina have recently discovered a particularly effective strain of probiotics in baby poop. Why they were looking there, I don’t know. They have created a ‘cocktail’ of it to feed to mice which had an astonishingly positive impact on their gut health. The test results suggest that these probiotics could help treat people with diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders and certain cancers. All you would have to do is get comfortable with eating bacteria that

The Rock Aqua Jays said team members, along with members of the Aquanuts and Webfooters water skiing teams, formed an 80-person human pyramid on the water in Janesville and the group held together for a distance of 1,148

The team said they took an initial run with 70 people, beating the previous Guinness record of 64 people, before beating their own record with 10 more people. Rock Aqua Jays spokesman Kevin Ostermeier said documentation from the event has been submitted to Guinness and the team expects their record to certified in about two weeks. Russia unveiled the four and-a-half ton robot at the Army 2018 Fair just outside Moscow, as a ‘demonstration of what is to come.’ The robot can walk and has space in a cabin for people to sit and operate the robot from inside and can hold and move objects with its claws, including

Dylan Kussman: Getting the Band Back Together Sometimes life and interviews take weird twists. This interview was meant to be about Dylan Kussman, the actor, screenwriter, and bandleader. He’s moved back to Chattanooga, got-

Well, hopefully, going forward the material I write will be for this band. I love having a female vocalist. I’d love to write some more keyboard-centered stuff, pull away from the guitar-centered stuff. More female-vocalist centered stuff. Right now, we’re working up a duet, a new song, which was really built for me and Kathy to sing. Now, Scott is singing a third part and Eric is flirting with a fourth. There’s an opportunity, perhaps, as we go forward, as we continue to gel… again, we’ve only been playing the past few months. This is going to be our first live performance. So we’re going to get a real taste of what we feel like and what we sound like in front of a live audience real soon. But, going back to what we were talking about, there’s the potential for a fourpart harmony with this band. That would be amazing.

Rushing and the Blues Strangers to see if they would open for us. Then we asked singer/songwriter Dana Rogers, who I love, a dear friend, if she would come and play in the lobby before the show started and make it a real evening of music, dedicated to letting everyone know that no one’s alone and there’s a support system. The whole night is a benefit to raise money for this Philadelphia-based non-profit called The Buddy Project. It’s an app, it’s a movement dedicated to pairing up people who are feeling down, kind of linking up people who are feeling that way and creating more support networks for people with people they can communicate with, who may be on the same wavelength, who can understand and empathize. It just seemed like a real worthwhile organization. So we said, “That’s what it’s going to be” and that’s what it’s become. We recently lost A. Hunter White in tragic fashion. It feels like an issue that is near and dear to the hearts of a lot of musicians in this community. I personally did not know Hunter White, so I can’t speak to it from a personal place. A lot of factors came together to make it all relevant. Then Kathy, who likes to point out what I’ve done with my life on occasion, said, “You know, the movie for which you are most famous – ‘Dead Poets Society’ – dealt very intimately with a suicide and the star of that movie committed suicide.” What, about a year ago? 22001144..

I want to help.” As soon as someone says that, it seems like there is a huge backlog of stories … now, suicide is skyrocketing in veterans and I worry that I’m going to get on Facebook and see some of friends I served with are gone by their own hands… I’m glad to see something like [this benefit]. I grew up studying piano, learning to read music … but I never came into my own as a musician until I stopped reading music and just started playing chords on the guitar. Lost In the ‘80s (Yet Again) What if you threw a party and no one came? That’s what it seemed like at State Bank Amphitheatre when “Lost ‘80s Live” came to town. I’m not sure if the name had anything to do with it, because I’m guessing people must have gotten lost on their way because the amphitheatre was shockingly barren. To those who did not come, they truly missed out.

The night started off with Nu Shooz. Valarie Day’s voice was strong as ever. Their big hit, “I Can’t Wait” really doesn’t do her voice justice. A remix of the song is what made them MTV famous but her vocals were probably wasted on this project, although it made her famous. He voice is better suited for jazz and is too sophisticated for pop. That being said, and bandmate John Smith played three songs including chart hits “Point of No Return” and of course finishing their mini set with “I Can’t Wait”.

Eyes were next. I’v seen one-hit wonders lists like on Mojo that categorize Naked Eyes as a onehit wonder. To set the record they are a two-hit wonder. Granted, I know more. Their biggest hit for all is “Always Something There to Remind Me”. The Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition was a hit for four artists in the ‘60s charting three times in the US before Naked Eyes put a synth pop spin on it. Back in 1983 it peaked at 8 on the Billboard charts. That was quickly followed with an original composition, “Promises, Promises” both off their debut album, Burning Bridges. It peaked at 11 on the charts. To their credit they had two other Top 40 singles (barely). “When the Lights Go Out” peaked at 39 and “(What) In the Name of Love” peaked at 39 the following year. Unfortunately after that second album the two went their separate ways. Keyboardist Rob Fisher went on to form another duo, Climie Fisher that had two charting singles in the late ‘80s. Unfortunately Fisher passed away in 1999 while working on new Naked Eyes material with former partner Pete Burns. ©Dave Weinthal
