It Isn’t News It’s Theft Those who unplugged to go somewhere remote for the Labor Day holiday weekend missed the news of dozens of famous women falling victim to a crime. The rest of us couldn't escape it, as news of the flagrant violation of their privacy quickly spread - outpaced only by the stolen images themselves. Celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Kirsten Dunst, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and many others were the targets of an effort to leak their private images onto the Internet. The nude and intimate photos and videos were initially posted to 4chan, which quickly removed them, but then resurfaced on various websites across the Internet. In reporting on the story, The

New York Times chose the headline, "Nude Photos of Jennifer Lawrence Are Latest Front in Online Privacy Debate." (1) But characterizing the fallout of this incident as a "debate" is ludi-

word. It is not a question of editorial judgment or taste, as was the case in showing pictures of murdered journalists in their last moments, a parallel drawn in the Times article. There is no news value in t h e s e celebrity images. Everyone has a body; the display and image of that body, in private, is the private property of the body's o w n e r crous. unless she agrees otherwise. protections of expression than I am, but there is just no First Amendment issue in play here. This incident is a clear instance trafficking in stolen property, plain and simple. CNN reports that some of the victims have engaged with the FBI; in a similar case a few years ago, a Florida man received 10 years in federal prison for hacking the email accounts of 50 entertainers, an incident that also resulted in the spread of private photos. (2) Culpability for this crime does not run only to the people who initially stole the images, however. It also runs to those who maintain a marketplace in which such goods are valued and traded. This is

a concept we readily recognize in connection with child pornography, for example. The images in question belonged to people whose computers were electronically burglarized. And unlike the loss of, say, an heirloom watch, these women are repeatedly victimized by each new exposure of the stolen images. Sites that use these images to generate traffic, and purveyors of gossip like celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who use them for the same reasons, are as guilty of an offense against the victims as Amazon would be if it maintained a market in stolen Toyotas. Granted, it is impractical for websites like Twitter to intercept media such as the stolen images in every case when they are first posted. And it is certainly true that once something is on the Internet, it is there forever. But that does not in any way justify reputable businesses allowing their users to disseminate these images freely. The absence of child pornog-

CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO HIRE A BOOKKEEPER? Starting a business is one of the most rewarding things you can ever do in your life. It allows you to break free of the traditional job paradigm and take complete control of your destiny. You can finally run things the way you want, set your own schedule, and gain the satisfaction of creating something from the ground up.

just a few common mistakes owners attempting to do it themselves can struggle with. However, the biggest negative consequence of a small business owner organizing their own financial data is that it takes time away from what they do best, which is running their business!

Business owners must carefully assess the value of their time. They must ask themselves if the time they spend on their own bookkeeping can be better spent on doing whatever it is that they do best. Are they better off committing that time towards generating revenue for their company? More often than not the answer to that question is yes, the extra revenue created by redirecting the owner's attention to matters specific to their business more than Bookkeeping is often viewed as a offsets the cost of hiring an expenecessary evil or even as a nui- rienced independent professional. sance by most new small business owners. Efficient bill paying can even make a company money by taking advantage of early payment discount periods offered by some vendors. Of course it takes time to set up and execute an efficient bill paying system and time is a commodity that business owners generally don't have an abundance of. Another misconception is that by utilizing popular accounting software packages such as Sage 50 and QuickBooks, anybody that can learn to use the software can do the bookkeeping. These software packages, as good as they are, will not do the work for you. The user still requires knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles in order to input the company's financial data correctly. Incorrectly entered financial data will lead to a host of problems; (1) a higher bill from the accountant at year-end, (2) incorrect interim financial statements which can limit the company's access to cap-

Experienced bookkeepers can bring value to an entity beyond simply freeing up some of the owner's time. They've likely worked with numerous successful and unsuccessful businesses and can help the owner emulate the behaviors of the successful ones while avoiding the pitfalls of the others. Some of the best will be able to correctly interpret the information found on the company's financial statements and identify important economic trends that can offer valuable and timely insight into the company's performance. If you've committed to making the life change of starting your own business I feel that you owe it to yourself and your company to give it the greatest possible chance of success. Hiring an experienced independent bookkeeper is a step in the right direction.

More Boots On The Ground? I was more than a little bit nervous when President Obama decided to (kind of) outline his strategy against ISIS on the eve of 9/11. Like most of you, I get more than a little bit nervous every time the anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon rolls around. Caliphates claim historical succession from the prophet Mohammed, whose “righteous caliphs” helped spread the message of Islam. On July 4, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed himself “Caliph Ibrahim” and shortened the name of his organization to “The Islamic State.” TIS (as I will now call it) controls a wide swath of land in Syria and Iraq. The group is targeting Christians in the region and wreaking particular terror on the Yazidi, an ethnic/religious minority. DELAND, Fla. (UPI) - A Florida man who called 911 while fleeing police to report he had “not done anything wrong” had marijuana stuck to his face when he was stopped, police said. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Benjamin Nutter, 26, early Tuesday because his tags were not lit, but the man drove his

vehicle into a shopping center parking lot and continued to drive slowly. Deputies said they noticed Nutter reach for a cup in his car and dump out the contents before driving out of the parking lot. Nutter allegedly dialed 911 while the deputies were perusing him, investigators said. “My hands are on the wheel, sir, I have not done anything wrong,” Nutter told the dispatcher. However, deputies said they approached Nutter’s car when he finally stopped and

discovered he had marijuana stuck to his face and the inside of the car from his apparent attempt to dump the illicit substance. Nutter was arrested on charges of making a false call to 911, possession of marijuana, and fleeing and eluding. FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (UPI) - An alleged shoplifter in Michigan made an ultra-lowspeed getaway on a motorized Walmart shopping cart “because she didn’t feel like walking,”

police said. Police said they were called Sept. 8 when a Walmart customer in Fruitport Township saw Shirley Mason, 46, leave the store’s parking lot on a motorized shopping cart, officers located the suspect and an alleged male accomplice about two miles away from the store. Mason, who police said had an outstanding warrant for her arrest stemming from a previous incident at a Walmart

store in Roosevelt Park, allegedly had up to $600 worth of stolen goods loaded into the $1,200 motorized cart. The police report said Mason told officers she took the cart “because she didn’t feel like walking.” Mason was arrested on a charge of organized retail crime in addition to the charge of second-degree retail fraud from the previous incident in Roosevelt Park. She is due in court Sept. 23. The 53-year-old man with Mason was also arrested on an alleged parole violation, police said. His name was not released. UGANDA - A baby born with eight limbs in Uganda has undergone a successful surgery to remove the additional body parts. Paul Mukisa was born with what doctors diagnosed as “parasitic twinning.” The extra limbs were part of a conjoined twin who never fully developed, and had neither heart nor head. While conjoined twins occur at a rate of one in 50,000, parasitic twins are incredibly rare. More than three months after his birth, a team of three surgeons, three anesthesiologists and two nurses at a hospital in Kampala performed a threehour operation to remove the parasitic twin. The operation

was successful. “There were no intra-operative or post-operative complications,” said one of the surgeons involved. LONDON (UPI) - The average alcohol-consuming Briton spends nearly a year of their life — 315 days — with a hangover, a charity’s survey indicates. Macmillan Cancer Support said the Onepoll survey of 2,000 people, conducted July 24-Aug. 6, suggests the average Briton spends at least seven hours each month with a hangover, while 7 percent of those polled are projected to have approximately 3,024 hangovers in their lifetimes. The charity said it took the average number of hours respondents spent hung over each month and multiplied it by the average lifespan — starting at 18, the legal drinking age in Britain — to calculate that an average Briton spends 315 days of their life, nearly a year, feeling the ill after-effects of a drunken night. The survey also found 10 percent of respondents had missed a job interview and 8 percent had missed a wedding because they were too hungover to properly function. “This research shows hangovers are a waste of time and are causing people to miss out on everything from

romance to their dream job. That’s why we’re asking people to sign up for Macmillan’s Go Sober fundraising event, abstain from drinking alcohol for the month of October and ask family and friends to sponsor them. The money raised will provide vital funds to support people affected by cancer so they don’t have to face it alone,” said Hannah Redmond, head of national events marketing for Macmillan Cancer Support. LAKESIDE, Ore. (UPI) - An Oregon woman accused of breaking into a woman’s home and biting the resident allegedly told the victim she “was playing the zombie game,” police said. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office said Jessica Rocha was caught trying to break into Erica Tate’s Lakeside home early Monday and the suspect allegedly attacked Tate by pushing her down the stairs, pulling her hair and biting her, the Coos Bay (Ore.) World reported. Deputies responded to the scene just before 1 a.m. and Rocha was arrested on charges of first-degree attempted burglary, fourth-degree assault, harassment, unlawful entry to a motor vehicle and third-degree criminal mischief. Tate told

deputies Rocha told her during the attack she “was playing the zombie game.” There was no word Tuesday on exactly what “zombie game” the suspect was referencing. SULPHUR, LA. - Authorities say a 19-year-old Louisiana man is in custody after he allegedly drove his car into the entrance of the Sulphur, La. Wal-Mart store after being fired. That’ll show ‘em. Andre Hofemann was fired and escorted out of the store around 9:30 a.m. Police say he then got into his car, drove to the store’s front entrance and crashed through the barricades and doors. Witnesses say Hofemann then exited his vehicle, entered the store and verbally threatened some of the employees. No major injuries were reported. While this may sound bizarre to you and me, in Louisiana this is not an uncommon way to leave employment. Ultimately, citizens and employees detained Hofemann until police arrived. Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without a liberal application of stun guns by police. Hofemann was arrested on charges of simple battery of an officer and aggravated criminal damage to property.

The venture was doomed to fail however due to the high price of the record players, which started around $95 (about $1375 in today’s dollars) and wasn’t revived until 1948. 11995555 Pat Boone has his first US #1 hit with a cover version of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t It A Shame”, re-named “Ain’t That A Shame”. Boone would continue recording cleaned-up versions of R&B hits and would enjoy a string of five US chart toppers over the next two years.

11 995566 Elvis Presley is presented with a Gold record for “Don’t Be Cruel”, which has just taken over from “Hound Dog” as the best selling single in the US. When the song was recorded on July 2nd, Elvis, along with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana and The Jordanaires ran through 28 takes of “Don’t Be Cruel” before he was satisfied. 11996600 Johnny Burnette records the original version of “You’re 16”, which will rise to #8 in the US. Fourteen years later, Ringo Starr would take the same song to #1. Chubby Checker’s version of “The Twist” reached the top of the Billboard Pop chart for a one week stay. The band lays down “Surfin’”, a song that would kick start their career as The Beach Boys.

“Jackie”, after Jackie Kennedy, the group changed the lyrics to “Sherry” after Cheri Spector, the daughter of one of Bob Crewe’s best friends. Over their career the Seasons would add three more chart toppers, “Rag Doll”, “Walk Like a Man” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” to their list of eleven Top 10 hits.

The Archies cartoon show first aired on Saturday mornings on the CBS television network. The records that were credited to this make believe group were recorded by Ron Dante, Andy Kim, Jeff Barry and others. Their biggest hit would turn out to be a song called “Sugar, Sugar”, that went to number one in 1969, selling over six million copies.

COWBOYS DOMINATE TITANS TO EVEN RECORD In what is now turning out to be a very unpredictable NFL season, there is only one thing certain about the Dallas Cowboys. When running back DeMarco Murray fumbles his first carry of the game, it’s a guarantee he will rush for over a 100 yards. The former Oklahoma Sooner star’s legs, as well as kicker Dan Bailey’s foot, led the visiting ‘Boys in Blue’ to a workmanlike 26-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans that at least silenced team critics for the time being.

The Cowboys offense dominated this game by holding the ball an astounding 41 minutes. During that process, Murray rushed the ball 29 times for 167 yards before calling it a day. Quarterback Tony Romo threw no interceptions, went 19 of 29 for 187 yards, and led a very well-balanced offensive attack that also accumulated a total of 220 yards on the ground. Where was this team locked up when they played San Francisco?

both the offense and defense was totally unexpected – and welcomed if you’re a Cowboy fan. Murray’s first carry fumble after a 12-yard run could have set a dangerous tone for the game. The iron like vise grip the team’s defense used to shut down Titan quarterback Jake Locker and the Tennessee offense prevented that from ever happening. into the locker room. The Dallas defense not only limited the Titans offense to just 5 minutes in possession time, it only gave up 68 yards in total offense. It was an entirely different Tennessee team that took the field to start the second half. The Titans, starting at their 4yard line, went pass happy with Locker finally hitting his targets. The team marched effortlessly down the field until the Dallas defense finally found its footing at their own 30. They

defensive back Bernard Pollard managed to hang onto an errant Tony Romo pass on the Cowboy’s next drive, he had clear sailing to the end zone. Instead, the dropped pass not only cost Tennessee the lead, but ended the team’s highlight reel for the day. The missed opportunity allowed Dallas to regroup. Romo led the team downfield – aided by a pass interference call – that ended with him tossing a 3-yard dart to receiver Dez Bryant for a 2310 lead to end the third quarter. The defense reasserted itself in dominance in the fourth quarter with linebacker Rolando McClain ending one drive with a nifty one-handed interception and an impressive goal line stand. Bailey would kick a 48-yard field goal for the final score. After the dust had settled, the Cowboy offense had controlled the ball for 41 minutes compared to 18 for Tennessee (the week before the Titans’ offense had the ball for 36 minutes in a win over Kansas City). The balanced Dallas attack enabled the team to control not only its destiny, but Tennessee’s as well.

You’ve got to get stops, force punts, you’ve got to be able to change the field position, you’ve got to get some three-andouts, and we did not accomplish that today in the ballgame,” said Smith. “We’ve got to finish. We’ve got to still be physical up-front. We’ve got to keep making plays. We’ve got to stop the run. We’ve got to create third downs for our rushers to rush, but we’re not doing that, so we’ve got to get back on the field and start working, said Falcons defensive tackle Paul Soliai. The Falcons hope to put this one behind them quickly as they return home for a Thursday night game at the Georgia Dome against division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers who are 0-2. “It’s one of those weeks where you’re glad the turnaround is quick, because you don’t like this taste in your mouth.
