Dieselgate Volkswagen has confessed to (and apologized for) selling hundreds of thousands of diesel cars in the U.S. equipped with software designed to evade government pollution tests. The company says the irregularities extend to about 11 million vehicles… …It’s too early to tell what the financial impact of the emissions test fraud will be on VW, but the company’s stock price dropped 20 percent in two days. VW is setting aside billions of dollars to pay fines potential legal judgments. The company also faces a huge public relations battle. After years of trumpeting its “German engineering,” VW has admitted to using its technology to evade accurate emissions testing… …Here in Chattanooga, Volkswagen has benefited from a generous local property tax break that lasts until 2039. Last year, that agreement allowed the company to avoid an $8 milion tax bill. While recruiting Volkswagen, Chattanooga and Hamilton County provided the largest incentive package ever given to any of the 10 major auto brands with production facilities in the U.S. (The production workers here are the lowest paid, according to a recent report from the Center for Automotive Research.) Local government has given away the farm to make doing

There’s no doubt about it. If Volkswagen suffers, the Chattanooga area suffers… …Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn was slated to address the executive committee of the carmaker’s board on Wednesday. Winterkorn was due to face questions about his knowledge of the scheme to trick regulators and consumers regarding emissions of its diesel engines. The CEO’s survival is said to hang on a few key power players, including Wolfgang Porsche, head of the family that controls a majority of VW’s voting shares; Bernd Osterloh, VW’s labor leader; and Stephen Weil, prime minister of Lower Saxony, which owns 20 percent of the company and has special blocking rights… …I expect Winterkorn and several VW engineers to lose their jobs over the “Dieselgate” scandal. The auto manufacturer has a hard road ahead when it comes to winning back consumer confidence. Its new leadership will have to work hard in the months and years ahead. Dear Rocco, My girlfriend has been furious with me since football season has started. She swears I pay no attention to her anymore since the season kicked off. All she wants to do Saturdays is go shopping, drink coffee and visit friends. I want to watch my Vols play and they’ve got a big game with Georgia coming up and I want to attend. She blew up when I told her I wanted to go to the game. I told her she could come too, but she got even madder. How do you explain to these women that college football is a religion to some of us, and we need “time to ourselves” for a few hours on Saturday? RT

The Trump/Sanders Phenomenon: Similarities And What It Says About The State Of Our Union When most people think of Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders, there are few, if any similarities, that generally initially come to mind. Mr. Trump is a recognized figure throughout the world, where far fewer people were even aware of Mr. Sanders, until quite recently. However, in this early stage of our political season, both men have put together and enjoyed far more support, than most of us probably believed would be the case, just a very short time ago. Personality-wise, the two individuals are miles apart;

Mr. Trump being far more brash, edgy, confrontational and showy, while Mr. Sanders appears far more reserved, content and issues-oriented, etc. One man seems to eagerly belittle and attack his opponents, while the other avoids personal attacks, and tries to keep the focus on issues, and what he would do differently. So, what are the similarities, and what does it imply about the state of our union?

aire Trump, often states how he will be beholding to no one, because he is not accepting political contributions. Sanders is playing up his underdog station, and showing that his support is from individuals, in smaller contributions, rather than the heavy hitters, or what anti-establishment or status quo supporters, often refer to as the 1%. Both

are running as alternatives to a system that is not functioning as well as it should. Both have not been lifelong members of a political party; Mr. Trump, a newcomer to politics and having switched parties, while Mr. Sanders still refers to himself as a Vermont Independent. 2. Many people are mad and

disappointed, and seek change: Remember that President Obama ran his successful campaign, especially in 2008, on the promise of Change. However, many are not happy about those changes, and seek alternatives. Both men are seen as alternatives; Trump to a crowd in his party that many view as less than stellar or exciting; and Sanders as the anti-big money, and antiHillary candidate. While their different motives and intents can be debated, there is little doubt that both are being aided by overall disappointment and/or disillusionment with business as usual. 3. Remember it's only the end of summer, and the election is not until more than 14 months from now: While their popularity may continue or even grow, there are many ques-

tions about whether either man is electable, either to gain the nomination, or win the election.

4. What happened to the moderates?: Up until around 1980, our Presidents, predominantly, were within 5% of the middle of the political spectrum. Because of that, there was far more bipartisan agreements, and possibilities, than there are now? Neither of these men would describe himself as being in that centrist 5%, and

only time will tell, if the American public and electorate seek that kind of agreement, etc.

5. How would either man work with Congress?: As a business tycoon, Mr. Trump is used to dictating the terms, and mandating how things will be done. Will he be able or willing to have the patience, etc, to work the system? Mr. Sanders has been in the Senate

and Congress, as well as having served as a Governor, but will he want to agree or settle for compromises, etc? No one knows for sure how either man will end up doing in his quest for the Presidency, or how he might perform, if elected. However, the fact that they have had such a major impact, with Mr. Sanders drawing huge crowds and lots of passionate supporters, and Mr. Trump attracting the major portion of media coverage, and is leading in his party's polls, indicates that there is a lot astir, within the state of our union. Will this be the cycle that begins a drastic change? - Richard Brody

Advertising Reality Why are we so easily fooled by advertising? I'd say most consumers are bright and aware and wise to the ways of marketing media, but still they buy shoes to make them faster, exercise machines to make them stronger, protein shakes to help them lose weight, and shirts with stripes aligned for a sleek, trim silhouette. Are the shoes, the machine, the drink, or the clothes what make us the shape we are? No, absolutely not. Even though these items might be beneficial to the body physique such as good, light-weight shoes that fit well can make our feet feel better and ready for walking and jogging to enhance health,

the shoes themselves are not automatic nor self-motivated. It is the wearer who counts and who must do the work to reach success. If you watch television very often you know how advertising softens our senses and sets us into buying mode. Do you need a burger right now? Probably not but that tantalizing hunk of meat topped with fresh vegetables, melted cheese, and gooey sauce is quite inviting and may force you from the lounger to those special, aforementioned shoes and into the care for a zip through the drive-through window for a carry-out bag of delicious, dripping with grease

us to want. If 97% of all Americans buy Product X, why would I want to be an outsider, a loner, and purchase something different. If I came out in public with the wrong makeup, wrong clothes, and wrong hair color, my life could become a disaster. And for some, especially those chased by the paparazzi this might be true, but certainly this is not my case. I did hear a story recently, however, where the shoes would have made all of the difference. A young man had recently moved to a university city from England. At 6'7, 350 pounds he had been an amazing rugby player, one to be reckoned with based on size alone. Recruiting football coaches spied him and invited him to "walk-on" to the team. Going home and chatting with his dad he pointed out that he

would need cleats, the special $150 type. His dad, unimpressed with his deal or his plea stated that the bargain store shoes would work just fine for this walk-on affair. Being 18 and aware of status and also a bit stubborn, the son refused the cheap shoes and so no walk-on arrangement arrived. Instead he waited a year for the football call to come around again and instead went to college with his dad's financial support. The next year coaches called again with shoes made available and while he was not a scholarship player until the following year, he then had a full ride to play and complete his education. A lot of money in the long term could have been saved with the purchases of those fancy cleats.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

HOW TO MAKE MONEY INVESTING IN 401K PLANS IN 2015-2016 AND BEYOND Torie, like millions of other people, knows that she needs to make money investing in 401k plans in 2015-2106 and beyond (she has a couple) in order to retire comfortably. What she also needs to know: 401k asset allocation, how to pick and manage her best 401k investment options, and the outlook for 2015 and 2016. Let's take a look at how she and you can make money in 2015, 2016 and beyond (or at least make the best of it) if you're in the same boat. Although it's been easy to make money investing in 401k plans in recent years, this is not always the case. The first thing Torie and you need to do is to set a goal (Torie's is to retire in about the year 2040). Second, be honest about your personal risk tolerance. Torie's is

"moderate" - but definitely not aggressive! Third, review your present 401k asset allocation to determine whether the investment options you hold are in line with your risk tolerance. Are you in the best 401k investment options, and in the right proportion? Finally, you need to understand that 2015 and 2016 could be a difficult time to make money investing in 401k plans. The reason: weak economic forecasts make yesteryear's best 401k investment options vulnerable to losses. Stocks are pricey and so are bonds. Assuming your risk profile is similar to Torie's (she would like to make money but wants to avoid heavy losses) what can you do now to stay on track, make money, and avoid heavy losses if 2015 and

Falcons Rally As Giants Lose Another Double-Digit Lead Late It was déjà vu all over again for the New York Giants as for the second week in a row they blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter to lose. The benefactor this time was the Atlanta Falcons who scored two late touchdowns to erase a 10-point deficit to win 24-20 and improve to 2-0 on the young season. “This league is all about finishing, so today is a great example,” said Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. it was another receiver that subtly made a name for himself with big catches and a touchdown reception. Leonard Hankerson, who was signed in the off-season made key catches and helped lead the Atlanta comeback. “I’m happy for Hank,” said Matt Ryan about his receiver. “He worked realty hard coming in here and has done a great job.”

Atlanta’s defense once again rose to the occasion as they pressured Eli Manning and forced turnovers, one of which Ryan credits for the Atlanta comeback. “I think Kroy Biermann got it going for us lived up to the hype as Julio While those two put on a clinic with the sack-fumble in the red

Cowboys Win Despite Losing game season. This was a day both teams would have liked to forget. Chip Kelly’s offense was ground to a halt by a stellar Cowboy defense led by linebacker Sean Lee, who was seeing his first regular season contest since the 2013 season. He made his presence felt all day long as did the entire defensive squad. The Eagles offensive effort was so bad that afterwards Philly TIMBER!

Big deal! Those victories have cost Dallas dearly. Pro Bowl receiver Dez Bryant broke his foot in a close win over the New York Giants. His loss forced the receiving corps to step up its game, and it did. However, it was the injury to Tony Romo that has threatened to derail the team’s entire season. For lack of a better term, the Cowboys victory over the Eagles was truly a sight for sore eyes, but not the way you would expect. Dubious records

mitting 18 of them (20 if you count the two that were offset by Philly penalties on the same play). Going into the game, Tony Romo had gone 86 consecutive pass plays without a sack (there were three today, including the disastrous last one by the Eagles Jordan Hicks that broke his clavicle in the third quarter). As for defector DeMarco Murray, his decision to jump ship for the sake of the dollar bill is coming back to haunt him more than he could have guessed. The former Cowboy, who rushed for a franchise record 1,845 last season is now on course to rush only 88 yards for the entire 16ENIGMA

players were saying Rod Marinelli’s squad knew what plays the offense was going to run before the ball was ever snapped. Even if the Cowboys didn’t know what was coming against the Eagles, Philadelphia’s offense sputtered at most the entire game. The offensive line didn’t block well. Passes were dropped. Throws to open receivers never made it there. And the running attack – it took a late effort by Murray to turn a negative rushing day into a net

positive of two yards. This time last year, the former Sooner running back had amassed nearly 300 yards. The Cowboy front office and head coach Jason Garrett are doing their best to say the Cowboys offense will be fine with Brandon Weeden. They aren’t fooling the media or its fan base with their optimistic attack. Last year in two home losses to Arizona and the Washington Redskins (a game that in hindsight probably cost Dallas a Super Bowl berth), Weeden was totally ineffective in running the Cowboys highpowered offense that featured both Bryant and Murray. The defense has stepped up its game significantly this year. It could be too little too late for this year’s squad. Significant miscalculations by the front office, especially when it came to the running game, are now coming back to haunt the team. They thought the offensive line, one of the finest in the NFL, could make any running back a star. They were wrong. The team should have put the franchise tag on

Murray and signed Bryant (which they eventually did). Had they done that, it’s doubtful Romo or Bryant would be injured right now because the running game would have been front and center for the offense, thus changing the destinies of both players this year. Now the team is stuck with the 32-year-old Weeden who has already proven he can’t handle the pressure. Sure, he went 7-7 against Philadelphia and found receiver Terrance Williams open for a 42-yard touchdown, but that highlight reel is going to be quickly forgotten when he takes the field at home against the Atlanta Falcons Sept. 27. As of this writing, the Cowboys just traded for Buffalo Bill backup quarterback Matt Cassell. He gives the team some hope before Romo comes back. He saved the New England Patriot season after Tom Brady went out with a knee injury guiding them to an 11-5 record. He wasn’t able to help the struggling Kansas City Chiefs rebound when he quarterbacked that team, but at least he is a proven winner.

Eli Manning ended up throwing sight of Tony Romo throwing 11-yards to his tight end Jason Witten at the goal line with seven seconds left to tie the game. Kicker Dan Bailey finished the job for a 27-26 victory over the New York Giants. The funny thing is this victory happened despite the plethora of mistakes Dallas made that put their opponents in position to beat them in the first place. The Cowboys drove 72 yards in 1:27 after stopping New York at the 1 and forcing kicker Josh Brown’s fourth field goal of the game. Why New York opted to pass for a touchdown instead of run it is a mystery. Regardless of the outcome, it would have ran at least 40 seconds off the clock and sealed
