STRAIGHT SHOOTER
When you think one of the most prolific character actors, who’s also an outrageous openly gay stand-up comedian, one name comes to mind…. Jason Stuart. Stuart has been making people laugh out loud with his hysterical performances all over the country since coming out in 1993. He has accomplished what few other gay comics have ever achieved: brutal honesty with humor in a world that’s not always kind. Jason performs at the Comedy Catch May 24 and 25. NIGHTFALL
There aren't too many artists making soul music today who had a release in 1969, back when R&B was first beginning to give the drummer some. Lee Fields, however, is one such artist--or maybe he's better labeled a phenomenon. Since the late sixties, the North Carolina native has amassed a prolific catalog of albums and has toured and played with such legends as Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers, O.V Wright, Darrell Banks, and Little Royal. Lee Fields and the Expressions kick off this season’s firs Nightfall Concert Series Friday with openers Drew Sterchi. 3

On the surface Cameron Asa is your typical 19-year-old. He just finished his freshman year of college at UTC where he is majoring in communications. He enjoys music, watching movies and hanging out with his friends. What makes him different from other 19 year olds is that in the time it took you to read this introductory paragraph, he probably banked another couple hundred dol-
lars. “I’m just a normal 19-yearold who that daydreams,” he says. One that is making serious bank, however. Asa is on pace to easily make over a million dollars this year. How you ask? rolling for him was when pop singer Carly Rae Jepson had the hit song last year entitled “Call Me, Maybe”. He in turn made a parody account called, “I Just Met You, And”. “It was just a parody to a song and I guess people thought it was funny,” he says. The account got 20,00 followers and he was excited because at that time he considered that a bunch of people. A second account called “ReTweet This” reached 180,000 followers. From that account he was able to create more. He now manages nine accounts on Twitter with a loyal following of over three million and he is gaining an average of 50,000 a day.
Asa’s biggest account on Twitter right now is “Tweet Like A Girl” and as of Sunday he had over 550,000 followers. “It’s a very powerful account,” he says. “I’ve been contacted by Google AdSense. I advertise with them,” he says. “I’ve managed to make a ton of money.”

Asa put a lot of hours in before he started making money off of Twitter. “A LOT of hours, actually,” he confesses. Political Consequences All actions have consequences. Believe me… I know this to be true… and so do you. In the political world, the consequences can happen in a hurry...
…Until the Federal Bureau of Investigation went after the Haslam family business, that is. The FBI walked into Pilot Flying J’s Knoxville headquarters on April 15 with warrants, closing down the nation’s largest diesel reseller for a short time. The Bureau’s affidavit alleges that PFJ’s salespeople defrauded some of its customers out of fuel rebates, especially targeting “unsophisticated companies.” It claims that the company’s employees withheld those rebates to boost profitability (as well as their own sales commissions) and that our governor’s brother, Jimmy, knew all about it…
…Tennessee governor Bill Haslam seemed like he was on easy street. With his friends (and fraternity brothers) as our state’s U.S. senators, he had an instant rapport with the Federal government. Naturally, that proves helpful when it comes to getting the Volunteer state its fair share of money from Washington. The former Knoxville mayor managed to handle a few hot issues with his likeability intact and seemed like he was on cruise control … Bill Haslam hasn’t been for re-election in 2014… involved in the day-to-day operations of his family’s chain

Personally, I’m glad to see the end of the Littlefield administration and I’m guardedly optimistic that the days of cronyism and bid-rigging are over. Or at least we’ll get a new batch of cronies…

Dear Rocco, I am 34 years old and have been an introvert all my life. I simply feel more comfortable to talking to some people and tend to clam up around others. Since I have this shyness and insecurity, people sometimes think I act like a snob. I feel bad about this and have few friends. Some people have told me I have a phony smile. It is bothering me that people I meet are getting the wrong impression. I want to make more friends. Help! JS

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME There’s no place like home they say. That is definitely the case for Dana and John Underwood. The couple who grew up in Soddy-Daisy along with partners Dottie and Dave Petty have recently opened The Tavern, a sports and entertainment complex on Dayton Pike literally a stone’s throw from Interstate 27. The Underwoods and Pettys hope to take advantage of the unbridled growth that Soddy-Daisy has witnessed in the past ten years. What once was quiet farmland has had multiple subdivisions spring up and has grown in population much faster than East Brainerd and the Northshore combined. And it was time for Soddy-Daisy to have a legitimate watering hole they could call their own. “We’d go across the river to go drink or to an establishment where we felt we could have a good time,” Dana says. When the building came on the market she and her husband saw an opportunity. “I’ve had 16 years of bar and restaurant experience and I feel I know the business pretty well,” she says. “Everyone else was on board. We thought we could have a big place here, have our friends here and they can have fun.” The Underwoods and Pettys have put a lot of time and effort to get
The Tavern open. The building had a number of occupants before they took it over recently and a lot of time and money has been spent bringing the structure back up to code including totally rewiring the building.
There is still a lot of work ahead for the Underwoods and Pettys as they begin their new business venture but they seem to be off to a good start. “So far I think everyone has been happy with the changes,” Dana says. They recently updated the bar to showcase vintage NASCAR pieces added a new pool table and are planning to put in new furniture and plan an overhaul to the outside of the building as well. Plans are to update the back patio and add parking on all sides of the building to make getting in and out of Dayton Pike much easier. WEIRD NEWS LUDHIANA, India - A newborn boy in Ludhiana, India, has been sold for $830 to a New Delhi couple in a Facebook deal, officials said. The alleged deal was uncovered when the infant’s mother, Nooran, made a complaint to police that her baby went missing from the hospital where he was born, The Indian Express reported. The report said the boy allegedly was sold to Amit Kumar, who wanted to adopt a baby with his wife, and the deal was made

by a hospital attendant named Gurpreet. The Indian Express said police have arrested Gurpreet, the boy’s maternal grandfather Feroze Khan, his friend Irfan and nurse Sunita Rani, but Kumar was not yet in custody. The infant was recovered from Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi and returned to his mother, the report said. “A few months ago, I separated from my husband and came to my parents house,” the mother said. “On April 14, I gave birth to a boy at Satyam Hospital.

After delivery, I was told that my baby is dead. Later on, some people at the hospital told me that my father had sold the baby to nurse Sunita Rani.” Nooran’s father, an alleged drug addict, told the police he wanted to get the baby adopted as he did not want the expense of raising a child, the report said. HALIFAX, Nova Scotia - A letter in a bottle found by two people fishing in Nova Scotia has led to a reunion of the friends who wrote it in 2002, “never [expecting] anyone to find it.” Stephen Hennigar and Alexa Wray were fishing in the Shubenacadie River Wednesday when they found the discarded wine bottle, containing the letter and a few artifacts, CBC News reported. The letter, signed by two teens named Jill and Kelly, read: “The year is 2002. It would be cool if someone found this in the year 3002 or something. We hope it’ll go very far.” The letter referred to the Sept. 11, 2001, destruction of the World Trade Center and noted Osama bin Laden was “a wanted man.” “So we can’t let things like this go on any more.” It was accompanied by photos of Jill and Kelly and some friends, and after CBC News first carried the story, Jillian Boyce and Kelly Johnston, both 25, said they were the ones who released the bottle. “I never really expected anyone to find it,” Boyce said. Johnston said she hasn’t seen Boyce “in many,

many years.” “It’s crazy to think that after all this time a silly letter in a bottle could put us back in touch,” she said. “Oh my god,” said Boyce. “How did it not get ruined?” FLORIDA - 80-year-old Miriam Tucker who was attending a charity event in Florida accidentally swallowed a $5,000 diamond she had just won. Organizers of the event placed $10 cubic zirconia stones in the bottom of 399 of 400 champagne glasses. The prized diamond was placed in the last. Tucker told local media that she didn’t want to put her finger in the glass to get the jewel. Instead she took a few sips of champagne. As she was talking and laughing with other women at the table, she realized she swallowed the jewel. “What a dumb thing,” she said. Meanwhile, organizers and jewelers Joy Pierson and Andy Meyer were puzzled that no one came forward with the diamond. As they hovered near the table, Tucker eventually spoke up. “She said she swallowed what was in her glass,” Pierson said. Event chairwoman Gina Roth insisted that Tucker follow her to a hospital for an X-ray. The diamond didn’t show up, but Tucker already had a colonoscopy scheduled. She told Dr. Bruce Edgerton what happened and he retrieved the diamond, put it in a bio-hazard bag and gave it to Tucker’s daughter. After the pro-
cedure, they went to a jewelry store and had the diamond cleaned, tested and verified. How would you like to be that jeweler. “It’s an amazing story,” said Tucker. She plans to bequeath it to her 13-year-old granddaughter, where the diamond will “stay in the family with a story to go with it.” LOS ANGELES - Two men have been sentenced in California after admitting they extorted professional poker players with threats of publishing naked photographs, officials say. The photos were among private information stolen from the players’ email accounts, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday. Tyler Schrier, 23, of Menlo Park pleaded guilty to conspiracy, extortion and unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information. He was sentenced to 42 months in prison. As part of his plea, Schrier admitted guilt in a similar plot in which he extorted $26,000. An accomplice, Keith James Hudson, 39, of San Jose pleaded guilty to stealing naked photographs from a player’s email by hacking the account. He then worked with Schrier to extort poker players, prosecutors said. In 2010, the pair hacked the email account of Joe Sebok and stole intimate emails and photographs. They threatened to post them on the Internet unless Sebok and others paid them hundreds of thousands of dollars, prosecutors said. No payments were ever made and Schrier sent an email containing a nude photo of Sebok to about 100 people. Addressing the court at the hearing, Sebok said the extortion plot had “instantly damaged my ability to sustain my livelihood doing what I had been since 2005” and caused him to lose endorsement contracts.
macaw after five years thanks in part to the bird’s distaste for women. Mike Taylor of Great Falls said his bird, Spike, goes by the nickname Love Love and he discovered after adopting the avian with his then-fiancee several years ago that Love Love disliked women due to being abused by a previous owner, the Great Falls (Mont) Tribune reported Tuesday. Taylor said his wife sold the bird when the couple split up about five years ago and he “always wondered” what became of the bird. Taylor said he had his answer when a friend, Steve Caldwell, recognized the bird at Montana’s Parrot & Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Butte. “He says, ‘Oh, by the way, I seen your bird,’” Taylor said. Taylor said he soon got in touch with Lori McAlexander, executive director of the sanctuary, and was able to convince her of his story by describing the bird’s blind eye, toenail deformities, penchant for saying “love love” and his hatred of women. McAlexander said the bird was donated by a woman named Sonia who was bitten mere days after purchasing him. She said only male handlers had been dealing with Spike due to the animal’s violent distaste for women. Taylor was reunited with Love Love Sunday at the sanctuary and was able to bring him home with his original cage and the toys that went along with him when his wife sold the bird. “He’s just a really neat bird,” Taylor said.

About that time, Salina resident Jenna Krehbiel decided she needed to use the restroom. So as many of my loyal followers know where this is going from reading my columns before…What the heck is this world coming to? ...Oh, and I am not ready… and let's not forget… >I don't feel like they're safe<. What if? Just what if?...the smart phones made ya not so smart…lol….scary thing it will take one hundred years to find out…so for now taking time to spend my money on something that will be reinvented by Christmas is an investment… not a quick decision made at the mall.
So the question is how much are we paying and working to pay for voyeurism? … I remember a time (showing my age now)…when CELL PHONE wasn't a word used at all. Also people driving down the road weren't concerned with text, emails etc.
At this time in 2013 everyone has one... from three-year-old children to 90-year-old adults. Scary thing is price!!.. Hundreds of dollars are spent on devices that are used for “Facebook”, “Pinterest”… and porn… to pass the time away from our mundane jobs and lives… Conversation to humans or interaction with people will soon be a thing of the past.

NEVER LIKED THE BEATLES
NEVER LOVED ELVIS JIM SELLS Gemma Ray popped up on my radar last year with "Island Fire". I had heard, and heard of, "It's a Shame About Gemma Ray", but I was not prepared for the 60sinfluenced pop noir (don't know who coined that term but I dig it seriously) that stayed on heavy rotation here at the Fortress for weeks. It seemed to me that songs such as "Troup de Loup", "Runaway", and "Rescue Me" were all waiting to be used as a soundtrack for one seriously trippy movie. Little did I know … Gemma Ray must have read my mind, my review, or neither because here comes her newest effort, "Down Baby Down", clocking in at 27:22, a soundtrack for a non-existent movie. Lyrics, if any, are sparse. The line, "Say You Love Me", appears as a line in most of the songs here, adding a spooky, dreamy continuity to the album. "The Low Rising" is the perfect intro, the by-now trademark Gemma Ray hollow-body guitar layered with breathy vocals and sparse drums to create the perfect aural palette for the nonexistent movie's intro. "Gozo Theme" - Gozo being a small island of the Maltese archipelago

in the Mediterranean Sea for those interested - follows, with the guitars and drums joined by clavier-sounding keyboards. It is a neat touch and really sets off the vocals in the second half of the song. "Say You Love Me" is the album's third song, and the first with actual vocals. A harmonica adds to the previous instrumentation (minus the clavier) on this one, adding a high lonesome f'ed-up Western feel to this one. This is superb work, just a marvelous song. After the almost unbearable constant building of "Say You Love Me", the following tune, "Reunion Waltz", is a perfect counterpart, classical guitar combined with percussion, harmonica, and bass. If you let your mind roam, this is the point in our nonexistent movie where our protagonist is riding across the range with thoughts of lost love and/or revenge running amok in the mind. The keening fade-out sets up the next tune, "Carpathian Lullaby", perfectly, for here is where the normal Western goes off the tracks and it is all vampires, bullets, and tequila ... not literally, for we are operating
with a soundtrack for a movie that never was, right? However, you can see/feel the Hammer studio lots and backdrops, incredibly handsome, dim men and incredibly busty, dim women, all ripe for Dracula/Frankenstein/The Mummy to break bad on. At least, I can; if you cannot, I feel sorry for you because you are missing it. "The Letter", up next, return to "Say You Love Me" lyrically but the different tempo and orchestration transforms the tension of "Say You Love Me" into a dirge, the pause before our protagonist squares accounts with some people who desperately need it, which occurs in "Baby Goes Bad", popping percussion and twangin' guitars ride a nasty beat to the denouement. "Exo-Orbit", "So Long Serenata", and "No Star" are the epilogue, with "No Star" reminding us that this soundtrack, and the accompanying non-existent movie, was in no way normal and we were lucky to experience it. The same goes for Gemma Ray - there are not many artists that do something this unique this honestly; there is not post-irony hipster bullshit here, for this is the album she wanted to make for herself. Artists that do that may fail occasionally but they never truly disappoint. On "Down Baby Down", Gemma Ray neither fails nor
