With great excitement in our heart, we at ENJOY say “Happy Mother’s day” to every mother in Ghana, and “thank you for being you". We are also thrilled to bring to you the inspirational words of Reverend Dr Joyce Aryee, who has been kind enough to share with us her thoughts on mothers, mother’s day, and motherhood in an exciting interview. This month we were excited to attend the launch of Maybelline New York, a world-renowned make-up brand, coming to Ghana under the L’ORÉAL umbrella. We welcome them and wish them every success with this popular brand. In this issue, we are sharing pictures of such glamourous events as the VLISCO Women’s Award Night at the Mövenpick Hotel and the British Queen’s birthday party, that was held at the British High Commissioner’s residence. Last but definitely not least, on the occasion of Labour Day on 1st May, we wish all workers in Ghana, success, prosperity, and harmony in the work place and peace in their homes.

I nterview with

Rev. Dr Joyce Aryee

M

May 10, 2015 is Mother’s Day. In Ghana, as in everywhere else in the world, a day of great excitement. Children will pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. For sober reflection on the significance and impact of the day, ENJOY Magazine, has been in touch with Rev Dr Joyce Rosalind Aryee, a former Minister of State and former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, and founder and Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries. A very talented motivational speaker, Aunty Joyce, as we fondly refer to her here, shares thoughts on mothers and mother’s day with our Publication Manager, Juanito Mario de Medeiros. Enjoy the interview!

ENJOY: Aunty Joyce, how significant is Mother’s Day today? Aunty Joyce: We know Mother’s Day did not originate in Africa. However, the essence of it, in my opinion, is the commemoration, which is derived from the decision that it is important to set aside a day to honour mothers. It is significant because people recognize that mothers are intrinsic to their own lives, intrinsic to the development of homes, intrinsic to the development of societies and nations. Yes, observing Mother’s Day is very relevant.

“You know, what is important here is not staying at home, but remembering that mothers deserve to be honoured, celebrated, and remembered.”

ENJOY: But it is just one day in

the year!

Aunty Joyce: Every day ought to be Mother’s Day, of course. But you can’t celebrate every day. So you need to set a day and give it full-blown focus. And I think that is what is happening. ENJOY: Would you say we celebrate or commemorate the day the right way in Ghana and in Africa? Do we keep to whatever brought about the idea of having a Mother’s Day? Aunty Joyce: Every society all

over history can adopt something which is not original to it and use it to its own good. Mother’s Day in Ghana is given a lot of publicity. All the media houses — print, electronic — consider it essential, and interviews and special programmes are designed just to honour mothers. On that day, prayers are said for mothers, there maybe special programmes, special gifts for mothers, and people are encouraged to present all kind of gifts, be it flowers, cloth jewellery, etc. So this is to say that in our own way, we celebrate the day in accordance with our cultural specificities. And we feel good that way.

ENJOY : Owing to the way you recognize the importance of Mother’s Day, would you make a case for it to be declared a public holiday?

Aunty Joyce: No, I do not think it should be so! I believe that every mother’s best wish is that her children will do well. And every mother knows that doing well has a lot to do with hard work. So even mothers would not like the day to be set aside as a holiday, especially within the African context, with so little to point to in terms of development. You know, what is important here is not staying at home, but remembering that mothers deserve to be honoured, celebrated, and remembered. That is the real essence of Mother’s Day. ENJOY: That being the case, who is a mother? Aunty Joyce: A mother is one who has compassion for children, nurtures them to grow up into good citizens, spends quality time with them and definitely cares for their needs. A mother may be even someone who has no biological children but who plays that role in the lives of others. So, a mother may be a biological mother of one, but would have thousands who call her mother because she loves, she cares, she nurtures, she disciplines, she motivates, she encourages and she rewards. That is who I would say is a mother. ENJOY: How every year?

Day

Aunty Joyce: (She had a hearty laugh) Usually, the day passes with me receiving lots of emails, text messages, etc. because even though I am a biological mother of one, there are thousands and thousands of people who call me mother. So telephone calls just pour in. I also get opportunities to speak on television or on radio, and I also enjoy the fact that my child has given me grandchildren. So having the grandchildren running around me is always a delight. Usually, they wake me up and present me with a gift, but just them being around is wonderful. And in ENJOY No 99 May 2015 | 7

E NJ OY the evening, my son and his wife, whom I consider a daughter to me, take me out to dinner. But then, I think of those women, those mothers who are out there, suffering, struggling to feed their children. As a mother, my heart goes out to them. And I pray that as a country, our social interventions get better and better, because we always have to remember that there will be mothers who will be struggling to take care of their children, and so there must be some social system to cater for such vulnerable mothers. In fact, schemes like the LEAP Programme (Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty) embarked upon by the government are to be encouraged, and I think the focus must be on mothers. I know also that some radio stations on Mother’s Day extend a lot of help to such mothers. Some of them give items like rice, cooking oil and other things to mothers in the communities. Those philanthropic works are so necessary! And we must salute all stakeholders, all those who contribute to such activities.

ENJOY: Can a child be angry with their mother? Can anyone be so incensed with their mother that they will decide that for one reason or the other, they will ignore her in her old age, or even before old age, just to express anger or frustration? Can we judge a mother over whatever wrong she may have committed? Aunty Joyce: We sometimes hear stories of children being so angry at whatever thing they think mothers may have done, that they take harsh decisions. But to such people, my advice is to recognize that mothers too have deep feelings. Sometimes, growing up, we do not recognize the needs, the psychological and emotional needs of our mothers, especially when they are single parents. Some of us have no idea of the difficulty, the trauma, the emotional stress of even trying to raise children, and therefore some of the reactions of mothers come as a result of the stresses that they have gone through. Even in my own case, it was when I grew up that I looked back and came to some realisations. Listen to this: when I finished sixth form and I was doing my holiday job, I was horrified to find out that my little allowance was close to what my mother had been receiving on a monthly basis as salary. And when thinking that she used that paltry sum to take care of five people, I really began to respect her a great deal. So sometimes, we are so 8 | May 2015 ENJOY No 99

“The one who made you a mother will reward you! Happy Mother’s Day, all of us!”

Auntie Joyce & Auntie Judith

Aunty Joyce: All you mothers out there including myself, let us thank the Lord that there is a magazine called ENJOY that focuses on our day each year. Remember that the opportunity to be honoured, to be remembered and to be celebrated is something that we should also appreciate. Perhaps our children never tell us they love us, but the fact that they make effort to reach out to us on Mother’s Day is also something we should appreciate. If you are a mother, remember that you have done a great job and the one who made you a mother will reward you! Happy Mother’s Day, all of us! e

self-centred that we forget that their reactions could have been as a result of some of the stresses that they went through. So when the Bible says that we should honour our mother and our father, there is a lot of truth to it. In the case of mothers, think of the 9-month pregnancy. Think of when the baby came and the amount of dedicated time that a mother, selflessly, has to spend taking care of a baby who is totally dependent on her, right through to the time of going to school. You know, a mother’s work never ends, not even when the children are grown-ups and taking care of themselves, because children will always run to their mothers for advice, for solace, for comfort… A mother’s shoulder is always there to be cried upon. So I will tell such people: “No matter what your mother might have done, just reflect on her immense contribution to your life. Spend quality time with her, meet her needs if necessary and from time to time, call to check on her”. Nobody should be so hurt as to neglect their mother, for that kind of bitterness can be very destructive.

ENJOY: Thank you. Your final words to all mothers, especially those who are going to read your interview in this magazine.

“Spend quality time with her, meet her needs if necessary and from time to time, call to check on her”. Nobody should be so hurt as to neglect their mother, for that kind of bitterness can be very destructive.”

Mother's Day

The Joy Of Being A Mother Anne Svetlana, Rolande Adjowa, Viviane, Ghinwa and Emmanuella are young mothers. How was their very first Mother’s Day as mothers? Have they been looking forward to the day? How did they feel being wished “Happy Mother’s Day” for the first time?

Anne Svetlana and Naomi

At times, Anne Svetlana stills does not believe she is a mother. Then it has to take bouncing little Naomi moving around or making her demands for the exultant mother to realise: “Oh my God! I am a mother”. Her first Mother’s Day? “That was last year. I had just delivered a few days earlier. I remember I was so excited that I nearly forgot to call my mum to wish her all those beautiful things that I had always prayed for to come her way. All my attention was on Naomi. e Ghinwa will welcome any nice gesture on Mother’s Day, especially a tender kiss from little Karen’s daddy. But she wouldn’t wish for “any more miraculous gift on Mother’s Day than being a mother”. “I gave life to Karen, she says, but my daughter has given me a reason to live, served with a magical smile at every sunrise”. e

Rolande 18 | May 2015 ENJOY No 99

Viviane will always remember her first Mother’s Day celebration as a mother. It was a great day because though she had not been looking forwards to it, she received so many goodwill calls and text messages! Viviane told herself that day: “Indeed David has brought something new to my life”. And who was the first person to wish her “Happy Mother’s Day”? David’s father, of course, and “It felt good”, she added. e Viviane and David

Emmanuella says “Mother’s Day bears a totally new meaning when you are a mother, you feel special that day, you feel grateful to everybody for no specific reason, you just want each and every one to share in your happiness”. She says she can’t wait to hear little Emmanuel wish her “Happy Mother’s Day” himself when he is of age. e Ghinwa and Karen

Rolande says she has been living a fairy tale since she delivered Daniel. “Motherhood has made me a happy woman. It not easy, but it is so fulfilling! See, for me, Mother’s Day is every day. When my child is looking into my eyes and he smiles. When he looks for every opportunity to draw my attention and he does not want to let go of me. When he wakes me up deep in the night and keeps me awake till he goes back to sleep himself. e

Face Difficulties Positively

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery. Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbours continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up… shake it off and step up… shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP! It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him … all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity. THAT’S LIFE, if we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity! e

Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Did You Know?

• Several studies by sociologists around the world on the influence of the most famous social network in the world on the mood of the people, have revealed that the use of Facebook makes users unhappy and even depressive. Indeed, the publications of your friends, their funny articles and especially their photos that are smiling, attractive and which show the happy moments they spent, rather give you the impression of having a boring and tedious life, resulting in sadness and low self-esteem, hence depression. • The human feet consist of 52 bones i.e. 25% of all the bones in the body! The human skeletal system is very complex, it consists of 206 bones although that number decreases as one gets older because some bones fuse together. The feet are particularly complex with 26 bones each, including the tarsus, the calcaneus, the metatarsus and the phalanges. • The world record for push-up is 10,507 consecutive push-ups! According to a study by the University of Zurich, it is our brain which limits the performance of our muscles and thus prevents our body from intense long duration physical effort. However some people have perhaps been able to control this limitation to be able to exceed the limits, like the Japanese Minoru Yoshida, who set this crazy record 35 years ago, in October 1980, and till date this record still holds. • In Ancient Greece, throwing an apple on a woman was considered a marriage proposal! Apples were considered sacred to Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Thus throwing an apple was the symbolic way of declaring love and catching such apple meant reciprocating or accepting the love declaration. e ENJOY No 99 May 2015 | 21

STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Who wouldn’t like to be their own boss and earn their income working for none other than themselves? The good news is that with a little planning and some start-up money, it is possible! Here are some important steps to follow to start your own business.

First, Do You Have What It Takes?

Though it may be thrilling to be one’s own boss, not everyone is cut out for the challenge. There are several traits that are common among successful entrepreneurs, including discipline, frugality, self-confidence, good communication skills, humility, honesty and integrity, superb recordkeeping skills, motivation, good health, optimism and perhaps more. The question is: Do you have what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur?

Create the Concept

In order to become an entrepreneur, you must first think of a concept, product or service that will generate a steady stream of income. You should conceive a plan that puts your knowledge, experience and expertise to use in the most profitable way possible. Once you settle on an idea, research the marketplace to see how similar businesses have fared. Preferably, start with areas you already have a great deal of interest in, and equipment and materials for. This will help cut down start-up costs.

compete. Planning your budget includes researching industry standards, giving yourself a cushion, reviewing the budget periodically, and shopping around for services and suppliers. While many firms draft a budget yearly, small business owners should do so more often. In fact, many find themselves planning just a month or two ahead when unexpected expenses throw off revenue assumptions.

Look to the Future

Develop a Work Space

If you are considering a home-based business, remember that your home's primary function is to serve as a dwelling for you and your family. If you're considering a computer-based business, make sure you have the technology necessary to give your idea a fighting chance. Make sure you have a dedicated, private area to work. This area should be free of noise and distraction.

Create A Business Plan

Numerous studies have shown that one of the major reasons new businesses fail is poor planning. If you are planning on starting up a business, you must have a business plan. This will serve as a road map to guide you, and communicate with your bank and/or investors “Once you settle on an idea, research what you're doing and why they should invest in you. oon you can dance and be dripping with sweat at a party… and smell better afterwards. Researchers at Queen's University in Northern Ireland have designed a revolutionary perfume formula. In concrete terms, this perfume is 'imprisoned' in ionic liquid, i.e. salt in liquid form. In addition, this new fragrance system prevents bad odours from escaping, thus covering perspiration odours. One can bet this invention opens the way to great progress in cosmetic products. e

The New York Times reports that a 30-year businessman, Dan Price, founder and chairman of the company Gravity Payments, has informed his employees that the minimum annual salary would reach USD70,000 by 2017. But the thought-provoking news is that in order to achieve this, boss Dan Price will have to divide his own salary by 14, bringing it down to USD70,000 from the initial 1,000,000 USD. He will also use 75-80% of the USD2.2 million profit the company realized in 2014. Dan Price founded Gravity Payments with his brother, at the age of 19, in 2004. e

Arrested for Keeping in his Possession Dead Men's Penises in Jars 3

T

his 52 year-old Croatian is now known as ‘The Penis Collector’. He has been arrested for taking advantage of his position as a nurse in a hospital in Slavonski Brod, a small town in the East of Croatia, to gather a large number of human penises, taken from the bodies of deceased patients. In his apartment, the police have found several glass jars filled with the gruesome specimens preserved in formalin. It is neither known what led the police to the man’s apartment hence to his morbid collection, nor what he has been collecting the penises for. He has been released on bail and is awaiting trial. The maximum sentence he might be handed is 2 years imprisonment. The big question is: « Is it really prison that the penis collector needs »? e

Needy Waste Importers

W

hile many countries have been trying hard to reduce the amount of waste they generate each year, Norway and Sweden have been busily importing waste! These two countries, which use waste to fuel their power plants, have had in the past to address an unprecedented situation of shortage of garbage, which required them to import. In Oslo, the Norwegian capital city, which uses waste as a way of producing electricity and heat in order to supply the city in energy, the system has been working so well that when the city of Naples, Italy found itself in a garbage collection crisis in 2010, the Norwegian administration proposed to the Italian municipality to buy much of their accumulated waste. However, the transaction was never concluded and Norway turned to the United Kingdom and the USA to tackle heir waste. e

JUMBO THE LITTLE ELEPHANT

O

once upon a time, there was a baby elephant named Jumbo who lived in a forest. He always used to dream that one day he would be able to swim in the river but his mother tried to make him believe that he was too heavy to swim. Once as he slept he dreamed that he was swimming deep in the river. He was swimming here and there and frolicking happily. He made friends with some small but harmless fish. He was very happy. The fishes went to him and they asked his name. He said his name was Jumbo and they played hide and seek together. Meanwhile Jumbo could not realise the mischievious plan of the fish, The fish were amused by the look of Jumbo. They wanted to make his big ears their home and to play hide and seek in Jumbo’s ears and his mouth. One day when Jumbo was fast asleep after playing, the colorful fish arrived and entered his mouth and exited from his ears. They were playing and making fun of Jumbo. When Jumbo woke up he realised that he made a big mistake by making friends with them. He cried but nobody came to help. At last his mother woke him up from his dream. Seeing his mother in front of him, Jumbo cried inconsolably and promised that he would never ever think of swimming in the future. That made his mother happy. e

APPLE WATCH

Recently, there has been a surge in the creation of wearable technology, most notably smart watches, and everyone is excited to see the future of this trend. On April 24, Apple officially launched the Apple watch and started shipping to early pre-orders and has apparently sold more, so far, than similar products from other manufacturers. The gadget can work with an iPhone, although one is not required, and it features simplified versions of apps you know and love from the App Store.

tech tips

While the Apple Watch is not available in Apple Stores yet due to back orders, you can head over to our website, www.enjoyaccra. com to learn more about how it works and join the hype! e

The main selling point of the Apple watch is the way it simplifies checking notifications, beaming the notifications to your wrist where you can see them immediately. This makes it easier to dismiss spam notifications while making sure you don’t miss any really important alerts. It comes with 8GB of space and there is even an 18K Gold Edition, what’s not to love?

“On April 24, Apple officially launched the Apple Watch.”

DIY SOLAR CHARGER

We have an exciting hands-on project that fits perfectly with the season! Building a solar phone charger is not an easy project and will require time and patience, but the project will be very rewarding when finished! Visit our website to explore our resources and get building! e

TECH TIPS 1. Always keep your devices clean with a dry microfibre cloth (or lightly dampen with a mixture of 50% water and 50% white vinegar for an extra deep clean). 2. Keep your files and folders organized both for your peace of mind and to keep your computer running smoothly. Knowing where all your files are allows you to get rid of clutter or outdated files to conserve space. 3. Always ensure your important data such as contact lists, work files, and important emails are backed up, either locally on an external drive, or via one of the cloud services such as Google Cloud or iCloud. e

You've Been Applying Your Skin Care

&Makeup in the Wrong Order Brought to you by Glam's Make up

I

It seems like there's a new beauty invention to add to our routine every week (micellar water, lip primer, what?). And with all those bottles and tubes lining the vanity case, we get a little confused about which product goes on when. The sequence in which you should apply your skin care and makeup in the morning (or evening) is very important. The right layering technique will ensure you get the maximum benefit from each product, but it's mostly intuitive. For example, sunscreen should go on after moisturizer for the best protection, and apply eye shadow ahead of foundation so any fallout won't smudge on your face. But when you start inserting facial oils and contouring powders into the mix, it's enough to make a woman's head spin! Don't worry; we're here to save you from these easy-to-make beauty mistakes. Keep reading to get everything in order from skin care to cosmetics for a flawless face.

Skin Care Application Order Always start on a clean face! Try to let each product dry before applying the next one, and when in doubt, apply in order of most lightweight formula to heaviest — that'll allow for best penetration of ingredients. Of course, if you're doing this routine before bed, you don't need to apply sunscreen. Swap that step out for a night cream for maximum moisturizing effect. e

Makeup Application Order While the order of foundation and concealer is hotly debated, we've polled many makeup professionals for this order. In the end, excellent blending is more important than when you apply. While it may seem bizarre (and look jarring!) to put your eye shadow on before the rest of your face, you'll thank us later when your smoky eye doesn't drift down to your cheekbones. e

MONTH

Taurus

KNOW YOUR SIGNS

21/3-20/04 May brings continued focus on your money, valuables, resources, assets, and talents, dear Aries, but learning and communications are becoming increasingly important. The Full Moon on the 3rd could bring a scurry of activity surrounding a money matter. For some of you, there may be epiphanies about a close relationship. However, the tendency to blow things way out of proportion is high. Pay close attention to what surfaces now, whether this is new information or new emotions (or both), but wait until you've gained some perspective before jumping to conclusions. May can be a tricky month, particularly when it comes to communications and pet projects. You may need to totally revise or revamp a current project before you move forward. Be especially vigilant with applications, interviews, and schooling. As well, pay special attention to communications and transportation equipment and devices - this includes computers, cars, phones, tablets, and the like.

Taurus

21/4-21/05

May brings a strong focus on personal changes, money, and work, dear Taurus. If you need to sort out your finances, it's a good time to do so, although there can be some challenges involved. Mercury's retrograde begins on the 18th and especially affects your personal resources, and this means that review is necessary before moving forward, particularly when it comes to your finances. You may need to look 44 | May 2015 ENJOY No 99

back to more profitable times for clues before you look forward. The Full Moon on the 3rd has an eyes-wide-open effect on your partnership or feelings for someone. There can be problems related to shared resources, a partner's income, or a lack of incoming support. Disillusionments involving a friend or new business idea can figure into the mix, complicating things further. These issues are likely to be revisited later this year and next year.

Gemini

22/5-21/06 May brings an interesting mix of energies to your life, dear Gemini, but it can be complicated at times. Sometimes you feel very much in the driver's seat, and other times you're not sure who's in charge. You are hosting all of the personal planets (the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) in your sign at various points this month, and this increases your independence and power, but at times you could feel a little alone with your decisions. Career directions can be confusing at times, and a significant other may present some obstacles or may seem to be at odds with your personal plans. The Full Moon on the 3rd can bring strong awareness of a work or health matter, and the days following it may involve some sorting and adjustments based on new information coming to light. Look to the 5th for a stronger feeling of empowerment, and possibly some amazing support from a friend.

Famous : Taurus Victoria Murray BORN: May 4, - Chester, England Designer, copywriter and trainee photographer. Victoria has spent the past twenty years living in Africa, enjoying the people, and travelling around the Continent photographing the scenery and wildlife, especially the birds. Prior to that she spent many years working in London with International Alert, using her background as a trained anthropologist to good effect when meeting people such as the Dalai Lama, Presidents, Prime Ministers, and members of the royal family of various countries. Her ambition is to have a golf handicap in single figures.

Horoscope

Cancer

Libra

Capricorn

May involves good energy overall for networking and the support of friends, dear Cancer, but also a strong theme of introspection, preparation, and attention to physical and emotional needs. The Full Moon on the 3rd can bring a romantic or creative matter to your sudden attention, and emotions can be overflowing as you explore your feelings. There may be a need to deal with a tricky work or reputation matter on the 4th. Lovely Venus moves through your sign from the 7th forward, boosting your personal appeal. While you are certainly attracting positive, and often romantic, attention with this transit, your heart may not be ready to fully process it quite yet.

May has much to do with making adjustments that will help improve your life, dear Libra. The Full Moon on the 3rd brings strong awareness of a money or resources matter that needs attention. From the 7th, there is good energy for public relations and the ability to smooth over problem areas with your special charm and kindness. This is an especially helpful thing, as May has the potential for many assorted misunderstandings, and it can be particularly difficult for you with so many challenges occurring in your communications sectors. Be extra precise with what you say, look carefully for mistakes, and take steps to prevent breakdowns with your devices and vehicles.

May is an important month for making adjustments, getting your priorities straight, and revising your work, dear Capricorn, but has its sweet spots, too! The Full Moon on the 3rd brings you in touch with a creative or social matter that needs special attention. Emotions can be intense and a little raw around a Full Moon, and the tendency to overdo or overstate can be strong with this particular one. Keep everything in moderation, and think things over carefully before calling anyone out or making a big announcement. You'll need to treat your health and your work with extra care in May. There is a tendency for you to do so much for others that your peace of mind suffers.

22/6-23/07

Leo

24/7-23/08

There has been quite a bit of focus on friendships and career in your life, dear Leo, and while this continues in May, the Full Moon on the 3rd can pull your attention to personal matters and problems closer to home. It's a time for tending to family and domestic affairs, and restoring some balance to your life. People continue to take notice of you more than usual this month, and you're quite ready and willing to perform. This is a period of high visibility, attention to career, and networking. There can be new energy in your career, or a new beginning of sorts, from the 18th. At the same time, Mercury's retrograde begins, and it's affecting your social sector. Particularly from the 17-22, watch what you say, particularly in social media or with friends and groups, as the possibility of misunderstandings is strong.

Virgo

24/8-23/09

May is complicated, dear Virgo, and in many ways can be considered a month of making adjustments. The Full Moon on the 3rd can bring a scurry of activity as you race to meet deadlines, run errands, and take care of paperwork. This month can involve complications and misunderstandings on the job, and difficulties juggling a full schedule. You may need to do a lot of revision work and reorganization, but the effort you put forth now can bring long-term rewards. Public and professional communications need extra attention - be sure to be as clear as possible, avoiding off the cuff remarks and too-quick reactions.

24/9-23/10

Scorpio

24/10-22/11 There is a lot of focus on personal transformation and close relationships this month, dear Scorpio, but May can involve more than the usual misunderstandings, hurdles, and adjustments. The Full Moon on the 3rd is in your sign, bringing buried feelings to the surface and possibly prompting a mini personal crisis as you become aware of what you're missing in your life. As exciting and enlightening as this is, watch that you don't jump to speak too soon. Passions run hot, but pride can enter the picture and cause tension. June will bring many possibilities and opportunities, particularly related to career and work, and the adjustments you make this month should improve prospects then.

Sagittarius 23/11-21/12

You don't have to tell everybody everything, and saying less could make you feel better. The May 3 Full Moon is busy, but it encourages discretion. Draw closer to your trusted friends and learn some of their secrets. Tie up a million little loose ends in the week of the May 17 New Moon and make daily life simpler and easier than you may believe possible. Daily routine is rarely glamorous, but it will be when you do it. The weekend of May 23 is a lucky, fun time with possibly big social plans. Mercury is retrograde now, so maybe skip any deep personal discussions.

22/12-20/01

Aquarius

21/01-19/02 IWhile there is a big focus on your personal life this month, dear Aquarius, the first week of May can bring strong attention to a career matter or outside responsibility. A recent project comes to a head, or circumstances are such that there's a sudden need to tend to a work or public matter. Watch for overdoing in the first few days of the month, however, and this includes overstating or making mountains out of molehills, as you have more impact than you may think. There continues to be a nice focus on home life this month, but you're really beginning to reach out to others more. Your social life is speeding up, particularly after Mars enters your romance and play sector on the 11th, but there are likely to be some blocks and misunderstandings involved in these areas.

Pisces

20/02-20/03 Around the Full Moon on the 3rd, you may have an opportunity or an itch to expand your horizons, whether it means actually venturing out, expanding your reach through publishing and promotion, or broadening your mental horizons. This can be a time when a project reaches a head or is shared, or schooling culminates. However, you could have some problems with a bloated schedule. Try not to overcommit to things now you don't need to take on more than absolutely necessary, or you will end up spreading yourself too thin. o | ENJOY N 99 May 2015

Top revision tips – how to prepare mentally and physically for the exam period ahead

T

The examination period and the time leading up to it can be a trying and stressful time for both pupils and parents. Some teens need more help than others in planning their time and keeping focused. Here's a list of tried and tested tips to pass on to your teens:

Make notes – it has been proved that we have much better recall of things that we have written down. Be creative - use different colour pens and draw images to help you remember things. Spidergrams can be very useful. Write the topic in a circle in the centre of a page and then things you need to know radiating out from it and making links between them. Revise with a friend – swapping ideas and testing each other can really help. Sitting GCSEs? - try the revision tests on the BBC bitesize website: bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize Exercise – anything from a walk in the park to a swim. This will improve your mood, relieve stress and will help with concentration and focus.

Eat fruit and vegetables and avoid stodgy, fatty foods. The healthier and fitter you are, the better you will be able to revise and then sit the exams. Listening to some music or watching a favourite TV programme when you’ve finished revising and before bed will help you wind down. Turn off your computer and your mobile phone before going to bed. Get enough sleep – if you have difficulty “turning off” and your mind is buzzing with facts and figures, have a warm bath, and try adding some lavender products. Relax – learn a breathing technique to calm yourself. Breathe in deeply to the count of ten (check this by placing your hand on your abdomen and feeling it rise) hold for a second or two then exhale slowly to the count of ten. And on the day! Be punctual - make sure you arrive on time and at the right place! Try not to panic especially when you are actually taking the exam. Use the breathing exercise above. Read the paper carefully and make sure you follow all the instructions and answer the correct number of questions! e

Plan ahead – make a timetable dividing your revision sessions into 45-minute slots (research has shown that the brain works best within this time-frame), allowing for a short break in between.

Drink water and plenty of it – your brain needs to be hydrated. Don’t have too many caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee and fizzy drinks.

Health Benefits of the Quail Bird Meat to Mankind Courtesy of Rev. Mrs Demay Alabi Media / Health Consultant

Quail meat is tastier than chicken and has less fat content. It promotes body and brain development in children. Pregnant women and nursing mothers will equally appreciate its nutritious values.

n its December 2014 issue no95, ENJOY carried an extensive write-up about the numerous health benefits of quails eggs. Medical practitioners have been using quails eggs as a treatment for hundreds of years? Yet in Ghana we tend to ignore this gift of nature!

I

The quail is one of several small game birds that belong to the pheasant family. They are stout, with brown feathers speckled with white, black, tan, grey or chestnut. Note however that the health benefits we humans can derive

He was offered quail meat to eat and he did. It was not long after when his courtiers had to admit that the meat had helped to heal him. In fact, both meat and eggs have been found to be potent in the treatment of tuberculosis, hypertension, diabetes, chronic arthritis, liver trouble, heart trouble, ulcers, sexual disorders, etc.

Quail meat can be prepared and served fresh, grilled or fried. It is a sweet and delicate white meat with extremely low skin fat and low cholesterol value. Quail meat is rich in micronutrients and a wide range of vitamins including the B complex, foliate and vitamin E and K. e

It is therefore recommended for people with high cholesterol levels, as well as those suffering from hypertension, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and insomnia.

from the quail are not limited to its eggs. Indeed the meat has also amazing nutritional value. The story is told of a Japanese emperor of old who was struck with tuberculosis.

You Wait to Work Out After Eating?

“It might feel tough to eat first thing in the morning, but fueling your body with proper nutrients is essential for your workout.”

H

How you space out meals during the course of the day might not make a big difference in terms of calorie, but it has huge implications on your workout performance. Not only can ineffectively fueling your body hinder your performance, but also, eating too much before exercise can interfere with your goals. When it comes to eating before exercise, it's all about timing. No matter what time of day you choose to exercise, make sure to plan your workout two to three hours after your meal. Going overboard with too much food right before a workout will leave you feeling sluggish and can lead to stomach discomfort. The last thing you want is your workout habits to hinder your digestion process. If it's been a few hours since your last meal, then most experts agree that you should eat a small snack one hour before your workout to properly fuel your body. A combination of carbs and a little protein, all under 200 calories, will do the trick. If you're not sure what constitutes a good choice, then check out these healthy pre-workout snacks for inspiration. And if you're going for an early workout session, then remember that exercising on an empty stomach — even when you first wake up — isn't ideal. It might feel tough to eat first thing in the morning, but fueling your body with proper nutrients is essential for your workout. Consider one of these light breakfast snacks you can enjoy an hour before your morning workout. e

Ingredients » 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour » 2 tablespoons sugar » 1 teaspoon baking powder » 1/2 teaspoon baking soda » 1/2 teaspoon salt » 2 large eggs » 1 cup milk, plus more if needed 1 cup sour cream 1 stick butter, melted 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

Directions

Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. In a separate large bowl, lightly whisk the eggs. Add the milk, sour cream, half the melted butter and the vanilla, whisking to blend. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour the egg mixture into it. Whisk the ingredients together just until blended. Fold the blueberries and lemon zest into the batter. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and coat with some of the remaining melted butter. For each pancake, pour about 1/4 cup of the batter into the hot skillet. Cook 3 or 4 pancakes at a time, depending on the size of the skillet. If the batter seems too thick, thin it with 1 to 2 tablespoons milk. When bubbles begin to form and "pop" on the pancake's surface, after about 1 minute, and the outer edge looks done, flip it over and cook briefly for about 30 seconds on the other side.
