ardboard is arguably the commonest form of packaging used worldwide. Most items you buy at the mall, market or supermarket are packaged & delivered in boxes made of corrugated cardboard. Because corrugated cardboard is such a versatile packaging material, millions of tons are used each year to protect and display products. More than 25 million tons of corrugated cardboard are produced annually in the United States.

Industry History

C

orrugated cardboard is a stiff, strong, and light-weight material made up of three layers of brown paper called kraft paper developed in 1884, by Swedish chemist, Carl F. Dahl. He developed a process called the Kraft process for pulping wood chips into a strong paper that resists tearing, splitting, and bursting.

Making cardboard boxes began with the Scottish printer and paper bag manufacturer Robert Gair, when he discovered a method of developing prefabricated paperboard boxes. The creation came about as a coincidence during the printing of seed bags when his ruler moved slightly and he accidently slit the seed bag. Much to Gair’s wonder, he discovered that the cutting of these papers enabled them to be folded. This led to the creation of foldable paperboard boxes. This discovery was later applied to cardboard boxes. The first company that used cardboard boxes to sell products was Kelloggs for packaging their cereal. In 1874, G Smyth, built a machine that manufactured large amounts of cardboard boxes. Later that year, Oliver Long upgraded the machine by creating corrugated board with liner sheets on equal sides called corrugated cardboard. The "Musée du Cartonnage et de l’Imprimerie" in Valreas, France holds a true history of cardboard box production and the skills involved in printing it. One company that is leading innovation in Ghana’s carton industry and has a strong presence in the industry is SONAPACK Ghana Limited. SONAPACK is able to fulfill even the largest demands from its consumers. The Rossmann Group embarked on a large capital investment project, installing a state of the art corrugator and modern converting equipment and quality assurance systems. The investment was not limited to equipment. The Rossmann Group employed some of the best brains in the packaging industry to add value and depth to the talent and experience of the management team. Today, SONAPACK stands tall in the Ghanaian corrugated cardboard market as a truly formidable alternative. Customers have a real choice for all their packaging needs. SONAPACK is committed to continued investment and growth underpinned by the Rossmann Group's passion for packaging'. e

SONAPACK began fabricating in Tema after its incorporation in 2007. By dint of hard work by management and staff, the business grew rapidly. The Kraft Paper

A

t SONAPACK, the Kraft paper is imported and its manufacturing involves pulping wood chips and then feeding the resulting paper substance through massive steam rollers that remove the water. Rolls of Kraft paper for corrugating are available in many sizes to fit the production equipment at different corrugating plants. The most common roll sizes are approximately 170.18 centimeters wide and 220.98 centimeters wide. A roll of heavier paper can weigh up to 2,724 kilograms.

At the plant, the Kraft paper is separated into different grades, which will be used for the medium and the liner. These different grades of corrugated cardboard can be made by combining different grades of Kraft paper. The SONAPACK technical team and marketing department work with customers to determine the strength required for the corrugated cardboard container being planned. At the factory, a Quality Assurance engineer specifies the combination of medium and liner to produce a cardboard to match the customer's requirement.

Corrugating The Cardboard

T

he Kraft rolls from the paper mill are loaded into a huge machine called a corrugator. Using powerful fork-lifts, skilled operators select, move, and load rolls of kraft paper to one end of the corrugator. Some of the Kraft rolls are used as the corrugating medium, and the others are used as liners. The layers of Kraft paper are then glued on each side of the medium. The corrugator then heats, glues, and presses the kraft paper to form corrugated cardboard. The continuous sheet of cardboard is cut into wide box blanks that then go to another machine that does the printing, cutting, and gluing. A finished piece of corrugated cardboard consists of a single corrugated layer sandwiched between two liner layers.

Forming the blanks into boxes

A

t the end of the corrugator, a slitter-scorer trims the cardboard and cuts it into large sheets called box blanks. They are then transported to the other machines that will convert them into finished containers. Each step of the production is fully automated and strictly monitored by a team of highly skilled production workers who use a computer terminal and printer to prepare a job ticket for each stack of box blanks produced by the corrugator. Printing dies and die-cutting patterns are prepared in a pattern shop on large, flexible sheets of rubber or tin. The dies and patterns are loaded onto a flexographic machine, and the box blanks are automatically fed through it.

18

www.enjoyaccra.com

As each blank passes through the rollers of the flexographic machine (flexo), it is trimmed, printed, cut, scored, and, in a printer-folder-gluer, folded and glued to form a box. The finished boxes are automatically stacked and sent to a banding machine to be wrapped for dispatch.

Quality Control

S

ONAPACK is currently the only cardboard manufacturing company in Ghana with a fully functional quality control department. Quality Control at SONAPACK is a journey and not an event; hence the process begins from the suppliers through to the type of Kraft paper used to make the corrugated cardboard all the way to the final product.

Testing the resistance of the cardboard

Kraft paper must be smooth and strong. After the paper passes through the corrugator and is made into box blanks, individual blanks are pulled from a stack and tested.

Agya Wiredu, Quality Department

Team Spirit: The Cobb test measures moisture in the liner and medium. Glue strength, bursting strength, compression, and highly accurate dimensional tests determine the quality of the manufacturing process. A warp test determines the flatness of the box blank, ensuring that each blank will travel smoothly through the flexo machines. As skilled workers run batches of box blanks through the flexo machines, individual boxes are pulled and inspected. Trimming, cutting, and scoring must be correct. No damage to the cardboard is allowed. Also, the different layers of coloured ink used in colour printing must be perfectly aligned. When batches of finished boxes are ready, the logistics team binds them together and makes them ready for dispatch to customers such as Promasidor, Accra Brewery Limited, Nestlé and their numerous other clients located both nationally and across the sub-region that depend on corrugated cardboard for their packaging needs. e

2012 The Year of the

Dragon People born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon are free spirited creatures who believe that rules and regulations are for other people. Naturally confident and very fearless, they are usually very successful. However, due to their extrovertness and enthusiasm, they can sometimes end up feeling tired and unfulfilled. Always one to lend a helping hand to those who need it, a Dragon's pride can mean that they are often unwilling to ask for or accept help from others. Chinese Horoscope

The Rat The Water Dragon is so good for you, it even makes the Horse month favorable! And, yes, this could be one of your best years. There are probably only two ways you can mess it up: Sit it out and accomplish nothing memorable, or try to outdo the outlandish Dragon. Sure, this is a great time to take risks, but come on! You know the Dragon may be lucky, but it also crashes and burns more than most signs. Know you can walk away from the table a winner -- and this year, that applies to just about every area of your life. Anything to do with communication, networking or travel could lead you to your heart's desire. Don't let this opportunity pass you by. Fly with the Dragon and make your dreams come true!

The Rabbit True, the Dragon's pace isn't as comfortable as that of the Rabbit. And yes, this year could be a bit more challenging for you than the last one. But come on, you're looking at seven favorable months! You'll have plenty of opportunities to do what you want and go where you like -- and be successful while you're at it. For now, it's all about timing. Pick your spots, plan celebrations, make big trips and start new projects during your favorable months.

Enjoy January-Feb 2012

The Ox Well, things could get a little wild for you this year! Your best bet may be to stay in the terminal, because you probably don't like the Dragon's style -- and you certainly don't enjoying Dragon-style crashing and burning. But you have three favorable months coming, with some lucky days ahead of you even in the unfavorable ones. The trick? For one thing, you'll have to dance to your own tune -- don't let the Dragon's recklessness draw you into something you'll regret. Also, be conservative, as the triedand-true path is the right one for you this year. Above all, pick your spots. Begin new projects and do important things during the most favorable times, even if you have to wait a bit.

The Dragon Did you find things going more slowly than you wanted last year? That can happen when the Rabbit is in charge. You can forget all that now, as this year is the time of the your own sign, Dragon! Chances are you'll love the pace and all the action. Your year ahead has a 60 percent favorable rating. That's good, but far from outstanding. So, what gives? First, the Dragon is a karmic sign, which means you're going to have more than your share of high highs and low lows. Not only that, but if you're a typical Dragon, you enjoy taking risks. www.enjoyaccra.com

The Tiger Okay, the Dragon is probably not exactly your style. But admit it -- you like it nonetheless. After all, you'd fly if you could. In Chinese astrology, the Dragon rules the Eastern sky, while the Tiger rules the Western. You're almost bosom buddies. Not only that, it's a Water year, and that's your most favorable element. Luck is with you! And, nine favorable months should give you a ton of great opportunities. As long as you don't get carried away by every wild scheme the Dragon cooks up, you should do well. Anything to do with communication, networking or travel could lead to your heart's desire. This is a year during which you'll want to be active. Make a commitment. Begin new projects. Be bold. Take chances. It's time to live your dreams!

The Snake The Dragon and Rabbit are as different from one another as night and day, yet you're looking at your second year in a row with a 65 percent favorability rating. Count your blessings, Snake. There is a difference, though: Last year was probably more to your taste, but this one is more likely to result in greater success! Hopefully you charged your batteries and made some good plans while the Rabbit was in charge, because now you have ten good months in which to accomplish big things. Strike out in new directions. Be daring. 37

The Horse Things are looking up for you this this year, Horse! After all, it's certainly more exciting to fly with the Dragon than go bunny-hopping with the Rabbit. You've got ten favorable months to go out and do whatever it takes to bring yourself happiness. Success? You bet -- and in many different areas of your life! And since it's a Water year, travel, education, networking and communication could all be great for you. Take some chances. Try something different. Make a commitment. Your two biggest mistakes would be to either hold back or get too carried away with the Dragon's unbridled enthusiasm.

The Rooster You're looking at a year of opportunities and challenges, and it's up to you to be smart about it. The Dragon brings luck, and Water favors the Rooster. You should also be happy that the coming year will be much better than the last one -- indeed, the Rabbit is hardly your friend. You'll probably do best by focusing on education, networking, communication and travel, as these tend to bring good results in a Water year. You'll also want to take care of important things during your five favorable months. If you can play things right, you'll be fine.

38

The Goat The Dragon's going to stir up a lot of action for you this year, making your life more hectic than it was last year when the gentle Rabbit was in charge. Now, this doesn't mean you have to fall in line with the crowd -- quite the opposite. You may be looking at only four favorable months, but if you think about it, that's enough. How many times are you going to change jobs, get married or buy a new home in one year? Go after the big stuff in those four good months, then stick with what you've been doing throughout the rest.

The Dog Every 12 years the Dragon shows up and rains on your parade. But take heart: At least you have one favorable month this year, as well as two others that are not so bad. In a year like this, timing is incredibly important. Plan your big events during those three months ... and keep a low profile throughout the other nine. You'll also increase your chances of success if you simply go with the flow. In a Water year, education, networking, communication and travel are favorable, so you'll have your best chance for success if you focus on these. A conservative approach is likely to be your smartest move this year, so hold off on risktaking, exploring new areas or making major commitments. www.enjoyaccra.com

The Monkey 12 out of 12 favorable months this year? That's right -- it's time for the Monkey to shine! The spotlight and all the success that comes with it are yours for the taking. All you need to do is simply go for it. You can make good things happen in almost every area of your life. Since it's a Water year, travel, education, networking and communication could all turn out to be exceptional for you. Enroll in a course. Try something new. Turn your biggest dream into your reality! But beware: Sometimes the Dragon's schemes are so outlandish that crashing and burning is the likeliest outcome.

The Pig After an extremely favorable Rabbit year, you'd expect a letdown, but that's not likely. Here come another 11 favorable months for you, and you're likely to be in the center of a lot of action! You might find the pace to be a bit much at times, but if you go with it, you'll score some major successes. It's time to take risks, and you want to be especially bold when it comes to education, travel, networking and communication, as these can all flourish in a Water year. If you were smart last year, you kept in step with the Rabbit's slower pace. If you didn't, you might want to start this year somewhat deliberately before revving up your engines and flying with the Dragon! Enjoy January-Feb 2012

or an African Cup, the 2012 edition, has been one of a kind and many are bemused at how strongly the hitherto unknown teams are performing whilst the big teams are left in their stead. The competition started with all sorts of predictions by soccer pundits and commentators. The Ghana Black Stars, a tournament favourite, have sailed through to the quarterfinals of the Orange AFCON 2012 through a 28th minute volley from Agyemang Badu against a determined Guinean side.

Live the Law of Love “Love is doing the right things unselfishly for one another with sincerity without hypocrisy.” -The Archivist

I

encourage the obedience to the laws of life when we live the law of love. The love I am referring is the “principal” or “virtue” of love, the wanting the very best for others irrespective of the level of intimacy you may experience with them on a personal level. People are extremely tender inside, particularly those who act as if they are tough and selfsufficient, I refer to such behavior as the Thelma Phenomena. They may mask their will or choosing in unique ways and if we listen to them with another ear, empathetically, they will tell us so. We can gain even greater influence with them by showing love, care and concern, particularly love without conditions or surrendering themselves. This gives people a sense of intrinsic worth and security unrelated to conforming behavior or comparisons to others. Many borrow their security and strength from external appearances, status symbols, positions, achievements, and associates. Nevertheless, borrowing strength inevitably builds weakness. We all distrust superficial relations techniques and manipulative success formulas that are separated from sincere love. Our most intimate relationships (whether it is parent, spouse, friend, sibling, offspring, etc.) require continuous nurturing and clearing of misunderstanding. I have a few practical ways you may reduce the Thelma Phenomena and Live the Law of Love:

1. Assume the best og others- Good faith

produces good fruit, building trust by more action, less words.

2. Seek first to understand- This takes courage,

patience and inner sources of security.

3. Reward

open, honest expressions or questions- Too often we punish honest, open expressions or questions. We judge, belittle and embarrass.

4. If offended, take the initiative- If someone offends unknowingly and continues to do so, take the initiative to clear it up. To act on that awareness takes thought control and fosters humility. 5. Go one on one- Make a time when you can give them the full attention and listen to them without censoring, lecturing or comparing. 6. Renew your commitment to things you have in common- Continually renew your basic commitment to the things that unite you to those closest to you. 7. Accept the person and the situation-

The first step in changing or improving another person is to accept them as is with the “hope” improvement takes place.

It is never too late or too early to start “loving” someone. Smile at someone and someone will smile at you. e

D rink U p “Most people mistake thirst for hunger. So before you eat, drink a glass of water and see if the hunger goes away.”

O

ne of the most effective tools you can use to keep your mind alert and body working at full strength in school, work, sports, and life is abundantly available to you each day.

It's Water.

Here is why. Your mind and body communicate with each other through a network of tiny nerves that send electrical charges to initiate everything you think, feel, and do physically. Water helps those electrical charges move efficiently through the millions of nerve networks. Since water comprises 75% of an adult’s body weight, imagine how important it is to make sure you keep yourself hydrated. So what are some of the early symptoms of dehydration?

• Dark Yellow or Orange Coloured Urine:

Urine is usually pale yellow to clear when you have sufficient water intake. It becomes dark colour or develops a strong smell when you need to drink more water.

• Dry Skin: Since skin is the largest body

organ, it requires a lot of water to maintain elasticity and that baby smooth feeling.

• Thirst: This is a no brainer. When you are

hungry you eat and when you are thirsty, you drink. However, if you wait until you feel that thirst sensation, then you are already dehydrated.

• Hunger: Most people mistake thirst for hunger. So before you eat, drink a glass of water and see if the hunger goes away. • Fatigue: Your body is made up of 75% water

and uses it for several functions. Therefore, if you are lacking fluid, your body can’t perform well due to lack of nutrients and energy flow. So if you feel fatigue, drink water so you can receive your boost in energy.

Dr. Angel Chambers CEO of DeYale Sports Centre

Here are some of the benefits of drinking plenty of water.

• Weight Loss: Drinking water helps you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Also, as I stated above, it is possible to mistake hunger for thirst. So drink your zero calories of water and you may eat less. • Headache Remedy: Helps to relieve headache and back pains due to dehydration. Especially with the hot African sun, keep yourself hydrated to decrease headaches and body aches.

• Less Cramps and Sprains: Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you are less likely get cramps and sprains.

• Relieves Fatigue: Water is used by the

body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body. If your body lacks water, your heart, for instance, need to work harder to pump out the oxygenated blood to all cells.

• Reduce the Risk of Cancer: Studies show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder cancer and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with the bladder lining. To keep your mind and body working at its full potential, drink up! So keep a water bottle continually available, you will make regular drinking more convenient and keep yourself hydrated and working efficiently. e
