“If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Dear Friends, A lot has happened on the Sports, Cultural and Entertainment fronts since the last issue of your preferred magazine, and we have selected a few of those events for your information.
Two major sports events recently took place in Ghana: the maiden edition of the Nkrumah-Nehru Polo Cup between a visiting Indian Polo Team playing in Ghana for the very first time and their Ghanaian counterparts; and the Regatta from Ada, in the Dangme East District in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region, to Sogakorpe, in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region. We bring you reports and pictures from those events, with the hope that those who could not make it to the Accra Polo Club and to Ada this time will make a point of seeing the next editions. On the culture front, a unique cocktail with Ghanaian ingredients and Ghanaian recipes transformed into Ghanaian finger foods and drinks served with Ghanaian style was hosted recently in the Traffix Restaurant, National Theatre. This wonderful initiative from Honourable Dzifa Gomashie, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, with active support from the Columbian and Mexican Ambassadors in Accra, is well worth a read. We also bring you pictures from the Internal Launch of Woodin’s New Collection, ‘Evasion de Woodin’, as well as from diplomatic receptions organised in Accra to commemorate the Moroccan 12th Day of the Throne, the 25th Anniversary of the German Reunification and the Spanish National Day.

But before anything, let us not forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed internationally to increase awareness of breast cancer. We subscribe fully to the need to sustain the fight against the disease by, among other things, keeping aware of it. We therefore congratulate the 1000+ participants in the 3rd edition of the ‘5K Run/Walk for a Cure Ghana’, given that their renewed support for this charitable initiative this year will assist in acquiring a much-needed biopsy machine for the St Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe, in the Nzema East district of the Western Region, Ghana. In this issue, you will read wise advice to women about breast selfexamination from Milagros Mensah of the Ghana section of RFCA (Run For A Cure Africa).

Interview: Her Excellency Mrs Claudia Turbay Quintero, Ambassador of Columbia to Ghana
HE Claudia Turbay Quintero, Columbia Ambassador
ENJOY: Your Excellency, what exactly was the event about at the National Theatre on 29th September? HE Ambassador Claudia Turbay Quintero: I have been very lucky to meet extremely wonderful people in Ghana since I arrived [in August 2013 – Editor’s note]. Prominent among such people is a beautiful and special person, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts of Ghana, Honourable Mrs Dzifa Abla Gomashie. We have accomplished several things together. That is a Ministry which has accompanied the Government of Columbia in many ways, and has readily been involved in the first programme of cultural diplomacy. So we get along fine. So, along the line, Mrs Gomashie approached me with the idea of finding a way to put together the international community represented here in Ghana around the Ghanaian cuisine. I liked the idea and I gave her my support. We went deep into the reflexion and, as a first step, we thought of showing the people, both Ghanaians and foreigners, other types of recipes, not the common ways of cooking and presenting food here in Ghana. We decided to focus on finger foods, to show representatives of foreign Missions and organisations that snacks served at receptions or other occasions 6 | October ENJOY No 103
The National Theatre in Accra played host to a cocktail with a difference on 29th September 2015. In attendance were highly distinguished guests from around the world including members of the Diplomatic Corps and representatives of International organisations alongside with Ghanaian personalities and a section of the general public. What made the cocktail ‘unique’ was that it was served ‘with Ghanaian ingredients’, both contents and containers. Her Excellency Mrs Claudia Turbay Quintero, Ambassador of Columbia, one of the initiators of the event, has been sharing more light on the concept in this interview with ENJOY’s Juanito Mario de Medeiros. Enjoy!
can be based on Ghanaian ingredients and recipes. That is what we tried to implement at the National Theatre that night. ENJOY: Now, how did the whole idea work out? Who prepared the dishes on display? HE Mrs Quintero: We brought on board my colleague from Mexico, HE Mrs Maria de Los Angeles Arriola, who was also very excited about the whole idea, and ‘Cook Art Ghana’, an NGO which had been involved in rebranding Ghanaian cuisines. Together we endorsed Traffix Catering Ltd. as the service provider to work out our concept. At the end of the day, we discovered it was not a bad idea at all. The soirée was great, a big success. ENJOY: What reactions did your guests have when they arrived at the Traffix Restaurant, National Theatre, and discovered what was being displayed on the tables? HE Mrs Quintero: I will tell you my own reaction first. When I got there, I was overwhelmed by the dishes on display. Everything was purely Ghanaian, the food ingredients, the serving of the food, the drinks... And it was fantastic. You know, there are striking similarities
Interview between Columbian food crops and Ghanaian food crops. Like you here, we have beans, rice, plantain, yam, cassava, all those fruits like mangoes, banana, pineapple, etc. but our dishes are prepared differently. So it was interesting discovering what could be done in Ghana with those same crops that we handle in diverse ways. Already, I have decided that for the next event I am hosting in my residency, Ghanaian food will be served in those same charming ways Traffix Restaurant designed for us at the National Theatre.

Listen, barely three days before the Deputy Minister of Tourism and I sat to discuss our special cocktail, I had received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in my country a book about the ‘Arab Cuisine in the Columbian Gastronomy’. That book talks about how Algerian, Lebanese and Moroccan inputs have influenced our local cuisine. So, a project like ours can be used to foster relations between Columbia and Ghana. Take yam, for instance. Ghana produces more yam than Columbia, but we have more cassava varieties. Already, these products have been identified for exchange of know-how between our two countries. Also, yam is one product which will be on the Memorandum of understanding which will be signed very soon when our Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs comes here for political consultations. ENJOY: When is the next get-together around Ghanaian cuisine within the diplomatic circle in Ghana?
HE Mrs Quintero: We need to form the concept further. We can handle it bit by bit, for example by inviting Latin Americans to hold events centred around Ghanaian ENJOY: Now in the light of your cocktail event how recipes, and they too will be showing what they can would you describe Ghanaian cuisine? do with Ghanaian ingredients; then it will be the Asian representatives, the Arab representatives or the African HE Mrs Quintero: I can confidently say Ghanaian representatives. Did You Know? • Matt Stutzman is an American athlete who specializes in archery... using his feet! In fact, Matt was born without arms and had to learn to do what could normally be done with arms, but with his feet. He managed to become a member of the US Paralympics Archery team, and more impressive still, he was able to hold the world longest shooting record with a 210-metre shot. • Two brothers were killed by the same man driving the same cab in the same month a year apart! In 1975, a terrible and incredible accident occurred in the capital of Bermuda, Hamilton. A taxi hit and killed 17-year old Erskine Laurent Ebbin on his moped. Strangely, in the same month of July in 1974, i.e. a year before, his brother Neville had been hit by the same taxi being driven by the same man. Even more amazing was Naville was also 17 when he was killed, and his accident occurred in the same street while he was also riding a motorbike. • Richard Norris Williams was an American athlete, one of the best tennis players in the world. But the Titanic could have changed the life of this athlete. He was indeed a survivor of the Titanic in 1912. He survived the sinking of the ocean liner by clinging to a raft. Richard had water ice up to the waist, resulting in the freezing of both legs. Once he was saved, doctors recommended he be amputated of both legs without wasting time, but he refused. He opted instead to work through the injury by simply getting up and walking around every two hours. His choice worked out and two years later, in 1914, he won the U.S. Open in singles, Wimbledon in doubles and a gold medal at the Olympic Games. e

One day, Kweku could not take it anymore, tender resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him. The boss knew that Kweku worked very hard for the years, but in order to help Kweku realize the difference between him and Isifu, the boss asked Kweku to do the following: “Go and find out whether there is anyone selling watermelon in the market.” Kweku returned and said “yes”. The boss asked: “How much per kg?” Kweku went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss the price was GHC3 per kg. Boss told Kweku: “I will ask Isifu the same question”. Isifu went, returned and said: “Boss, there is only one person selling watermelon. GHC12 per kg and GHC100 for 10 kg. He has inventory of 340 melons. On the table, 58 melons, and every melon weighs about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.
Kweku was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Isifu. He decided not to resign but to learn from Isifu. LA MAISON ART EXHIBIT SHOW

The Akwaabytes Exhibition opened at La Maison Icon House with an incredible display of great art and hospitality on October 1st. Patrons were greeted at the door by a surreal display of Afro-futuristic mannequins that beckoned them to enter into a feast of beauty that lay in store. All around was a seemingly unending supply of impeccably presented cocktails, champagne and finger foods directly from YOLO Xperiences, Coco Lounge, and Urban Grill next door. The shock of the surreal mannequins (a collaborative work called “Brand New Second Hand” by Nana Anoff and Rania Odaymat, the event curator) over, the extraordinary amount of work that went into preparing this exhibition became clear.
made up of hundreds of rhetorical questions, titled “Questions Beyond Answers”. The surprise acoustic performance from King Ayisoba brought an intense energy into the room, and complemented the flow of energy Nana Anoff was trying to depict with his recycled scrap metal and termite eaten wood. The symbolism of his work is truly exemplary, and later as he explained his vision of positives only existing in the context of negatives, the true depth of it became apparent. And that was the beauty of “Akwaabytes”; high end art in a wonderful, accessible format that left guests yearning for more. e
Kwadwo Rasta's “Emaskticons” were a series of simply stunning carvings. Each piece took over six months to create, as he put hundreds of everyday facial expressions into his work.

AWAY WITH THE PAYCHEQUE TO PAYCHEQUE SYNDROME what to do? Make sure you keep a record of your spending. You do not throw away your receipts of the month so that at the end of the month, you may figure out where your money has gone to and the areas you spend the most.
O
One of the less comfortable situations a salaried worker may find him/herself in is to be living paycheque to paycheque. You know you are battling with the Paycheque to Paycheque Syndrome when you realise you’re consistently running out of money before your next paycheque drops; when you frequently have to borrow money from friends or relatives; when you apply for payday loans or salary advances; or when you use your credit cards to cover your expenses until your next payday. • The Consequences Specialists have warned that you become vulnerable to financial damage If you are a ‘victim’ of the Paycheque to Paycheque Syndrome, for it becomes easier for you to accumulate a lot of debt. The more you accumulate debt, the higher your minimum payments will be. The unescapable corollary is that you find yourself in a precarious position where honouring those minimum payments proves to be unmanageable, making you ineligible to borrow more money to make ends meet. • The Solutions Since a person’s future is largely dependent on their current spending, the opposite attitude is for you to curb the Paycheque to Paycheque Syndrome now. 18 | October ENJOY No 103
First, you must be clear in your mind what is bringing about your living paycheque to paycheque. It must be either because you are not budgeting or because you do not make enough money to cover your expenses. When the underlying cause of your shaky personal financial situation is established, solutions can be applied. If indeed no budget has been provided for the family expenses, then starting by creating a budget becomes a must. That is about the only way you can know ahead of time whether you make enough money to make ends meet.
Then there is a need for cutting expenses. Because money is leaking, plugging the cracks can’t be overlooked. That may come with some lifestyle changes. The choice may be arduous at times. Also, you need to increase your income. Making money on the side with a hobby may be an option. The most important step, however, is to change your attitude about money. Endeavour to make the wisest spending decisions. Try not to overestimate how much money you can spend so you do not end up spending more money than you really make. Stop spending more money on things you want than you do on things you need. e
Should all your/family’s expenses fit within budget, then the income is enough and the “You do not throw away your receipts of the month so that at the end reason the Paycheque to of the month, you may figure out Paycheque Syndrome is haunting you/the family where your money has gone to and is that spending exceeds the areas you spend the most .” what you can afford. So, • THE FINANCIAL EXPRESSION OF THE MONTH: REPUTATIONAL RISK The ‘Reputational Risk’ is a threat or danger to the good name or standing of a business or entity. A reputational risk can occur through a number of ways: directly as the result of the actions of the company itself; indirectly due to the actions of an employee or employees; or tangentially through other peripheral parties, such as joint venture partners or suppliers. In addition to having good governance practices and transparency, companies also need to be socially responsible and environmentally conscious to avoid reputational risk. e

However, such an individual may be eligible for modified cash basis taxation. The modified cash basis taxation is a fusion of the cash and accrual concepts for recording transactions in accounting. It permits the individual to recognize income when he receives payment for goods and services and not when the amount becomes payable as it pertains under the accrual concept. By introducing modified taxation for an individual engaged in a business in Ghana, the new Income Tax law attempts to simplify the taxation of income of “small scale” businesses in Ghana and it is expected that this will encourage taxpayers to voluntary comply and fulfil their tax obligations. e

3rd Edition Of The 5K Run-Walk For A Cure Ghana “Run For A Cure Africa Ghana went on its 3rd edition of the 5K Run Walk For A Cure to raise awareness of breast cancer in Ghana.”

The now traditional 5K Run/ Walk brought more than 1000 participants of all ages on a fun-filled event held at Lincoln Community School at Reindolf Road Abelemkpe, on the 10th October 2015 to support the work of the foundation while raising awareness on breast cancer.
RFCA Ghana seeks to raise awareness of breast cancer through education that erases societal stigmas and emphasizes the key of early detection and prompt treatment. RFCA Ghana provides free screenings and funds to alleviate the cost of treatment to women in Ghana. Founder Milagros Mensah, said, “ When I came to Africa, I learned that the #1 cause of mortality in Africa among women from cancer is breast cancer. In 2013 we started a sister organization of RFCA in Ghana. Women do not face it as a disease. They see it instead as witchcraft or a curse. When diagnosed, they hide it and delay treatment. Research from Korle Bu indicates that this is the trend in Ghana.” “We want women to be aware of our own bodies. All women must perform breast self-examination (BSE) every month and have a mammogram every year after the age of 40, or before if directed by the doctor. When you are familiar with how your body looks and feels, you can immediately tell when something changes.

Funds raised this year will add to the St Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe a biopsy machine which, along with the mammogram machine already donated by RFCA Ghana will locally provide full diagnoistic capacity RFCA Ghana also hosts mass screenings throughout the year. Start getting ready for October 2016 for the 4th edition and do not miss this fantastic event! e

Breast Cancer Month Causes of breast cancer
S
Studies continue to uncover lifestyle factors and habits that alter breast cancer risk. Ongoing studies are looking at the effect of exercise, weight gain or loss, and diet on breast cancer risk. Scientists are also exploring how common gene variations may affect breast cancer risk. Each gene variant has only a modest effect in risk (10 to 20%), but when taken together they may potentially have a large impact. Potential environmental causes of breast cancer have also received more attention in recent years. While much of the science on this topic is still in its earliest stages, this is an area of active research. A large, long-term study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is now being done to help find the causes of breast cancer. Known as the Sister Study, it has enrolled 50,000 women who have sisters with breast cancer. This study will follow these women for at least 10 years and collect information about genes, lifestyle, and environmental factors that may cause breast cancer. An offshoot of the Sister Study, the Two Sister Study, is designed to look at possible causes of early onset breast cancer. To find out more about these studies, visit the Sister Study website (www.sisterstudy.org). Chemoprevention
The drug fenretinide is also being studied as a way to reduce the risk of breast cancer. In a small study, this drug reduced breast cancer risk as much as tamoxifen. Other drugs, such as aromatase inhibitors, are also being studied to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Molecular breast imaging
In this process, a slightly radioactive tracer is injected into a vein. The tracer attaches to breast cancer cells and is detected by a special camera. This technique is still being studied to see if it will be useful in finding breast cancers. Some radiologists believe it may helpful in looking at suspicious areas found by regular mammograms, but its exact role remains unclear. Current research is aimed at improving the technology and evaluating its use in specific situations such as in the dense breasts of younger women. Some early studies have suggested that it may be almost as accurate as more expensive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. This test, however, will not replace your usual screening mammogram. Breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy or partial mastectomy) can often be used for early-stage breast cancers. But in some women, it can resulting uneven breasts. For larger tumors, it might not even be possible, and a mastectomy might be needed instead. Some doctors address this problem by combining cancer surgery and plastic surgery techniques, known as oncoplastic surgery. This typically involves reshaping the breast at the time of the initial surgery, and may mean operating on the other breast as well to make them more symmetrical. This approach is still fairly new, and not all doctors are comfortable with it. New chemotherapy drugs

Ways to Resurrect Every Type of Eyeliner Brought to you by Glam's Make up
“First, make sure that your applicator isn’t actually the problem by rinsing it thoroughly with contact lens solution”
E
Every beauty junkie knows the heartache of an amazing eyeliner that’s dried up before its time. Fortunately, eyeliner is seldom completely dead—as in The Princess Bride, it’s only mostly dead, and you don’t need to be Miracle Max to bring your beloved liner back to life. Here are four brilliant ways to resurrect every type of eyeliner.
Gel liner.
Cream liner.
Bonus tip: Our favorite oil to use for this is coconut— Olive oil has a great consistency, but it can be so strongly scented that it makes our eyes water. Pass.
Bonus tip: For cream eyeshadows (which have a fluffier texture), use a drop or two of oil-based makeup remover.
We love the soft, creamy lines that only gel liners can create—but we hate the way that the little pots dry out as soon as they’re exposed to air. To remedy, put a few drops of your favorite non-scented oil in the palm of your hand. Dip your liner brush into the oil, then work it around in the gel liner. Close the jar tightly, and in five minutes your gel will be completely restored to its former glory.

Cream liners can be tricky. Because of their consistency, it can be hard to bring them back from the brink of drying-out death without compromising the color or finish. But we found a way: add a drop or two of heavy, unscented body moisturizer to the container and mix with your liner brush. This isn’t a permanent measure—you’ll likely have to repeat this process every few weeks—but it will definitely extend the lifespan of your cream eyeliner.
Beauty tips
Liquid liner.

There is nothing more sad than dried out liquid eyeliner, but it’s not the end of the world. First, make sure that your applicator isn’t actually the problem by rinsing it “Our favorite oil thoroughly with contact lens to use for this is solution. Pencil liner.
If a simple sharpening doesn’t work to restore your pencil liner to its former glory, it’s likely because the product has dried out inside the stick. The best way around this? Using a hairdryer. Hold the pencil about a foot away from the blowdryer’s nozzle, and move the dryer back and forth along the length of the pencil. This will consistently warm the product and melt it just a little; in about thirty seconds, your pencil liner will be as good as new. e

Are Itchy Legs
During A Run Cause For Alarm? “When your capillaries expand, the surrounding nerves become stimulated and send messages to the brain, which reads the sensation as itching.
38 | October ENJOY No 103
S
So what if it's been a while, and you've taking a break from running? You're finally inspired to lace up your sneaks and go! A few minutes into it, you start to experience an itchy sensation all over your legs, and it's so overwhelming that you have to stop running to scratch. What gives? As your heart rate increases, blood flows faster, and the millions of tiny capillaries and arteries in your muscles begin to expand rapidly. The capillaries stay open to allow for maximum blood passage when you're fit, but if you're out of shape, your capillaries tend to collapse, not allowing as much blood to pass through. When your capillaries expand, the surrounding nerves become stimulated and send messages to the brain, which reads the sensation as itching. Unfortunately, your itchy legs are the price paid for falling off the exercise wagon. So if you want to prevent itchy legs, keep up with your regular exercise routine. Just like a red face during exercise, itchy legs are no cause for alarm, that is unless the itch is accompanied by hives. Exercise-induced urticaria is in a sense an allergy to exercise, and if you're also experiencing stomach cramps, swelling of the face or tongue, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. e

Sitting at a desk for hours on end, staring at your computer screen, and scrunching your shoulders as you type can create a stiff neck and tense shoulders, or even a headache. Take a break and do these four stretches at your desk to offer some stress relief.
1. Behind the Back Neck Stretch This easy move offers a deep stretch in the sides of your neck. Clasp your hands and bring both palms to the back of your head. Sitting with a tall spine, ground your hips firmly into your seat. Begin to gently press your hands toward your thighs, tucking your chin into your chest. As you press down, use your hands to gently pull your head away from your shoulders. This will intensify the stretch even more.
• Hold here for at least 30 seconds, and then slowly lift your head up and release your hands.
2. Seated Clasping Neck Stretch Stretch the upper back and neck with one subtle move. • •
Sit on the very edge of your chair. Reach your hands behind you and hold on to the back of the chair. Press your chest forward, arching your spine. If it feels comfortable, let your head fall back slightly to open through the front of the neck.
•
Continue to breathe, feeling the front of your body open up as you extend backward. Hold this position for 30 seconds or as long as you want. Then slowly lift your head up, straighten your spine, and release hold of the chair.
4.Triceps Stretch Tight triceps will appreciate this quick stretch. • • •
Reach your left arm over your head, placing your left hand on the front of your right elbow. Gently pull your right elbow back until you feel a little tension Release your right elbow and lower your right arm to your side. Bend your left elbow and repeat the stretch with your left arm. e

Book Launch: ‘Congo A Journey’
The Heritage Indian Restaurant in Accra was, on Saturday, 4th October, the appealing venue for the launch of ‘Congo - A Journey’, a debut novel by Astha Singh, a journalist, an educator and now an author. The well-attended event was chaired by Mrs. Olusola Ogundimu, a leading lawyer who, incidentally, employs only women in her law firm. ‘Congo A journey’ addresses the topic of expat life in West Africa, in a compelling, funny and poignant story set in Kinshasa, a rich, teeming, squalid city by River Congo, fraught with staggering contradictions, thriving on monstrous disparities. In her book, the author follows lives of expat wives, prostitutes, businessmen, juju-men and warlords. Lust, revenge and voodoo follow the reader along the 150 pages tracing the journey of a

The first copy of the book was auctioned for a staggering GHC5000 and an elated Mrs. Astha Singh requested the bidder to donate the amount to a charity. TAKING YOUR TECH STARTUP

Accra has recently been identified as one of the fastest growing African cities in the world for people with a net worth of $1 million or more, according to a report by AfrAsia Bank and New World Wealth. While several factors could be propelling such prolific growth, we can certainly look at a few organisations that are at the forefront of the revolution, creating leaders and driving innovation. Sponsored by IPMC

Students’ Opinion
Schools in Ghana have resumed for close to two months now for the first term of the 2015/2016 academic year. It is our fervent hope, here at ENJOY, that all pupils, students and other learners will make the best of whatever facilities and opportunities are offered them in and out of school. But, do our wards know what going to school is all about? Do they have specific careers in mind when burying themselves in their books or researching project works? Students from Kay-Billie-Klaer International School at Adjiringanor in Accra have been kind enough to tell the ENJOY team about their dreams and aspirations. Edlyn, 12, can only be a fashion designer. To start with, she has been drawing clothes on female figures and designing patterns. And her drawings and patterns have attracted commendation from lots of people. For now, Edlyn does not have any role model in the industry yet, but she knows “she was made to become a fashion designer”. e Desmond, 16, has decided he would be a medical doctor because there is nothing he would like more than being a “saviour” of lives. Moreover, he wouldn’t mind exercising his chosen profession in deprived areas outside big cities. Why? Because “that is where [he] will feel the more helpful. In the cities where people have the means, help will always be at hand”. And Desmond added: “As a medical doctor, I shall be exactly on a par with my calling i.e. to give unselfish solace to people if I practise in a village”. Would he like to be called a ‘village doctor’? He thinks the term is not exact: “I would be a doctor practising in a village”. e
Maame Pokuaa, 16, is in JHS3. She is also seeing herself working in the medicine, but she is very specific: she wants to become a paediatric neurosurgeon. Asked where she got her inspiration from, she explained: “I knew I had to settle on a speciality in the medical sector where I want to work. Then I had the opportunity to watch ‘Gifted Hands’, the Ben Carson story. That really touched my heart. So I researched further on neurosurgery and found out there were dedicated surgeons for kids. I had just discovered my true passion. Maame Pokua is confident she can do what she has set herself to do because all her mind is put into it. e

13-year old Michael is in JHS2. He feels he has “a passion for the game of football”, so he has settled on becoming a professional footballer. Also, as such, he knows he would “make a lot of money and help the needy”. Of course, Michael agrees that one can make money in other fields of endeavour too, but “that is what I like to be”, he insists. e

Tiffany, 13, wants to become a pilot. She is convinced she will fulfil her dream of discovering plenty of new horizons and also make acquaintances everywhere if she becomes one. She wants to be a link among people all over the world and one way of doing that is to fly a plane. Already, she speaks French, and she hopes to learn other languages as well. Tiffany is in JHS1. e
A very assertive Joshua, 13, is gearing up to become “one the wealthiest engineers in the world”. And he “can’t see why that will not materialize”. Joshua bases his self-confidence on the good Word, quoting the Bible; “with God, all things are possible”. And if Microsoft’s Bill Gates, his role model, could make it, why not him? he asks. The JHS1 student does not think he will need necessarily to leave the shores of his country Ghana to achieve his dreams. e
Elizabeth is a 16 year-old JHS2 student. She sees herself managing people finances, assets and contributing to the growth of businesses, and she is positive she is a bank manager in the making. Already, she knows she is on the right footing to achieving that goal since her best subjects in class are maths, science and English. She is not scared of handling figures and she is “a much organised person”. Elisabeth “can’t miss her goal”. e
“She wants to be a link among people all over the world and one way of doing that is to fly a plane.”
Emmanuel, 11, is in class 6. Yet he has already decided what he will do tomorrow. He wants to become “a diplomat and work for the United Nations like Dr Kofi Annan”. What does Emmanuel know of Kofi Annan? He “was a great Ghanaian General Secretary in the UN and I want to be the next”, he said. For now, Emmanuel “can’t say much” of his role model, but he “has heard so much of diplomats and so good things of Dr Kofi Annan”! e
Selali, 13, JHS2, Sedinam, 13, JHS2 and Nadia, 13, JHS2 are all gearing to become lawyers. They say they abhor injustice, they love being of help to the oppressed and they want to contribute to peace in the society. They all have their respective role models, be it an uncle, a mother or an established lawyer. e www.kbkacademy.org ENJOY No 103 October 2015 | 45

HORO SCOPE Aries
21/3-20/04 Work, health, and relationships are in big focus this month, dear Aries, and motivation levels are on the increase. From the 9th, strong energy for consulting, negotiating, and partnering is with you, particularly in connection with your work or health goals. You could be teaming up with someone to pursue health and fitness programs, or to get a particular project done, and while you're typically very independent, this is a great time to let someone in. When it comes to work and career, this is a powerful time for renovations, redesign, and dramatic improvements. Your ambition increases pleasantly now, and you are especially resourceful in your methods. There could be some recognition for efforts that previously were taken for granted. You can be thoroughly enjoying your work or daily routines, and this shows in the finished product. When it comes to the pursuit of better health and well-being, what you may have been lacking recently is patience, but this month puts this shortsightedness behind you.

Cancer
Libra
Capricorn
The month ahead is powerful for motivation and energy levels, dear Cancer, particularly on mental levels, and is also strong for strengthening your resolve and self-confidence. When it comes to learning, connecting, and communicating, your taste for the new and untried is powerful, and your initiative is through the roof, particularly after the 9th and building as the month advances. A partner is in your corner, and there can be a motivating, supportive meeting of minds. You might be the go-to person for information and know-how.
While you're certain to be getting attention this month, with the Sun in your sign until the 23rd and Mercury in your sign all of October, dear Libra, there is some sense of holding back, and this makes it a more relaxed time than it typically is at this time of year. Mercury is still retrograde until the 9th, and you're looking back rather than forward, after which you have the chance to act on recent revelations and changes of mind. At the same time, Venus enters your soul sector where Mars is already traveling, and will continue to stay throughout the month. This points to a possible need for a sabbatical of sorts when it comes to major decisions in general, as well as relationships.
Life is really picking up pace for you this month, dear Capricorn, in a most enjoyable way. You seem to be balancing work and play well right now, with opportunities emerging on both personal and professional levels. There is good energy for applying your knowledge and skillset in practical ways and to good feedback, particularly from the 9th forward. For some of you, your ideas are reaching a larger audience and gaining recognition, or publishing, learning, and teaching are in strong focus. Combining business and travel can be rewarding for some. You might be enjoying an exciting new project or a revival of one already in progress. Personal magnetism is strong and is only set to increase.
22/6-23/07
Leo
24/7-23/08
24/9-23/10
The month ahead is strong for motivation, initiative, communications, and business, dear Leo, and can be very prosperous. Focus on building, connecting, and producing. There is a lovely exchange going on between your sectors of finance and resources and of communications from the 8th forward, and with Mercury turning direct in your communications sector on the 9th, strong energy for moving projects forward, gaining momentum as the month advances. It's a good time for both goal-setting and pursuing. You are bolder than usual when it comes to business and earnings, and especially motivated to produce and prove your worth. There could be job offers or you could be making your own job opportunities now, and possibly significant gifts or bonuses. Financial breakthroughs are possible. Your attitude towards your practical affairs and business is proactive, confident, fresh, and positive.
Scorpio
Virgo
Sagittarius
Your energy levels run high this month, dear Virgo, and your pioneering instincts are strong. Venus returns to your sign (it entered Virgo briefly in July before turning retrograde) just when Mercury turns direct on the 8-9. This is good news for personal appeal and attracting what you want into your life. Still, with Mars in Virgo all month, you are making things happen! This is a fabulous period for charm and attractiveness, and this trend continues into November as well.
While there is continuing focus on your social life this month, dear Sagittarius, career, responsibilities, and life plan goals are in strong focus, although they do have a social element to them. Very creative dynamic energy is with you, particularly after the 9th, for manifesting your goals or for furthering your career goals. Money matters are likely improving the more energy you put in the work you do, as you're enjoying it more than usual. This trend will be with you for many months going forward, but right now, motivation is powerful.
24/8-23/09
24/10-22/11
While much of October your privacy sector is emphasized and you require more time to yourself, dear Scorpio, there are important influences in your social sector that can't be ignored. From the 8th, you have creative, attracting Venus and assertive, energetic Mars moving in this part of your chart. Jupiter's already here and receives a beautiful aspect from your ruler, Pluto, in your communications sector. It's a powerful time for your social life, networking, and communicating. Some of you could be building a following for your ideas or your work. This month and the next, be sure to make connections and share your ideas. Your ambition is stimulated, and you are enjoying experimenting and entertaining new ideas. You may be feeling especially confident about what you have to offer others and the community, and in your own goals and dreams.

22/12-20/01
Aquarius
21/01-19/02
This month brings improvement to learning pursuits, transportation, and general spirit or attitude towards life, dear Aquarius. For people in love relationships or looking for love, this month and the next are strong for getting closer. Connections can deepen. While you're seeking out a little more adventure from your life this month, your private world holds a lot of appeal. In fact, there can be times when you're utterly absorbed in quiet activities, research, and projects. The desire for more intimacy in a relationship, or in your relationships in general, is increasing, and opportunities are likely to present themselves. Support from others tends to be more and more available to you, if you are seeking it. Self-improvement efforts can be very successful this month, and in many respects, in the coming year. Some of you could enjoy support or backing for travel or educational plans.
Pisces
20/02-20/03 There is a strong focus on the agendas of others in your life this month, dear Pisces, on your close relationships, and on your relationship with yourself and self-understanding. A beautiful, and necessary, drink for summer. Dark rum, lime and lemon, grenadine, and simple syrup. Yum. Hell, go crazy and get some umbrellas or fancy straws and be all festive and stuff. Paul Clarke's recipe leaves out the grenadine, you'll note. I don't know whether the grenadine is traditional or one of those later additions that make the geekiest of geeks angry. Nonstick cooking spray All-purpose flour 1 (18 1/4-ounce) box yellow cake mix 3/4 cup pumpkin puree, plus more if needed 1/3 cup vegetable oil Icing: 2 cups confectioners' sugar 1/4 cup pumpkin puree 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice Red and yellow food coloring, if desired Special equipment: 12-count mini pumpkin cake mold pans
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray the cake pan with nonstick cooking spray, coat with flour, and knock out the excess. Combine the cake mix with the pumpkin puree and oil. Beat with a hand mixer on medium until well incorporated, about 2 minutes. Some pumpkin purees have more moisture than others, if the cake batter seems dry then add more pumpkin puree, 1/4 cup at a time. Using an ice cream scoop, fill the molds 2/3 of the way to the top with batter. Bake until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 12 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and remove to a wire rack to cool completely. In a large bowl, combine the icing ingredients and mix together until well blended; the icing should be thick but have a pourable consistency. If it's too thick add a little water to thin. If you want the color to be more orange add a few drops of red and yellow food coloring. Dip the top 1/2 of each cupcake into the icing and place onto a sheet pan fitted with a wire rack allowing the icing to drip down the sides. Let icing set for 1 hour before serving.
