Dear Friends, It is the Ghanaian winter. Time to turn off your air conditioners, light a fire or just give yourselves a big hug. Better still grab a copy of the magazine and enjoy its friendly warmth. Despite the Ghanaian winter there are still people working on different projects day and night and no matter the season. These individuals I call the nation builders, they range from architects, to engineers, masons, plumbers, electricians and carpenters. Their responsibility is to build and beautify our cities. In this month’s edition we bring you up close with an exceptional builder, Mr. Stefano Ramella-Pezza, owner and managing director of CONSAR. All those who innovate, improve, change are also builders and in this 61st issue we encourage their passion and motivation as well as their professionalism. Notably, Adrian Landry, Hotel CEO of the year and manager of the Labadi Beach Hotel, the enterprising Imad Wolle of Woimex, Elie Bechara of Da Viva for his innovative drive and passion for youth entrepreneurship, the Swarovski group as well as members of the WEB: The Young Designers Hub. With the rains, come the holiday season. It is time for the great migration and as many will travel many more will come to visit Ghana. As we head into our 28th year, we are confident that the year ahead will be our biggest and best year to date. I am so proud of the entire team. Interview
Construction Innovation One Block At A Time
Founded in 1983 by owner and managing director, Mr Stefano Ramella-Pezza, CONSAR Ltd has achieved a respected track record as a company that delivers complex projects on time and in budget to its clients. Under his leadership the CONSAR team is equipped with two and a half decades of combined construction management experience and has been responsible for some of the premier construction projects in Ghana. I met up with Mr Stefano Ramella- Pezza in his office in Kumasi and bring you this exclusive interview.
Alain GBEASOR (A.G): Good morning sir and thanks for talking to me. Stefano Ramella-Pezza (SRP): The pleasure is mine A.G: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? SRP: My name is Stefano Ramella-Pezza, I’m married to my beautiful wife Anna and we have one child studying construction management in the USA. I came to Ghana for the first time at the age of 19, worked in Tamale for 5 years from 1978 to 1983, and moved to Kumasi where I worked for less than a year before I started my own construction company, CONSAR. A.G: Why construction and what is the meaning of CONSAR?
Enjoy July-Aug 2011
SRP: Construction is an ancestral job for my family in Italy. As a child growing up I watched my parents, grandparents, uncles, older cousins and brothers travel across Europe to deliver construction projects as part of the family business. CONSAR is an abbreviation of CONstruction Stefano Anna Ramella. “It’s entirely probable that every member of our family has construction in his DNA” A.G: Most companies have their head offices in Accra, why do you choose to be in Kumasi and how has it been? SRP: I’m emotionally attached to Kumasi and its people. Our first major contract, the construction of the SSNIT Flats, was secured here. I personally feel at home here, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the people of Ashanti have accepted me www.enjoyaccra.com
as one of their own from the outset. Logistically speaking the region is centrally placed for our projects in both the South or the North. CONSAR has grown steadily from a few hundred permanent workers in 1984 to over 1200 permanent workers now. A.G: What is the CONSAR vision and how is it coming on? SRP: At CONSAR, our vision is to provide exceptional construction services in a socially responsible manner. As a company we strive to give back to the community without compromising on quality. This approach has enabled us to continue to attract and retain the trust and respect of our esteemed clients. We are a client centred company which is clear when you look at our repeat clients ie the Government of Ghana, the GET fund , Ghana Commercial Bank, SGSSB and WAEC. 7

“I would love to see CONSAR become the leading construction company in the West African Sub- Region and Africa as a whole. My son, Gianlucca, is studying construction management as a first step to achieving this objective.” A.G: What makes CONSAR stand out in the face of the competition? SRP: We continually seek ways of increasing efficiency, streamlining business and we offer constructive ways to handle our clients needs. To this end we have created associate companies such as, Consare Stone Quarry Ltd, Modern Wood Technology, Allemar Aluminium Systems Ltd, Oropa Estates, Consar Civil Engineering and Seepacs Engineering which enable us handle more complex projects in budget and on time. A.G: What is the Secret of CONSAR’s Success? SRP: At CONSAR we are committed to our clients and we believe our staff are the key to our client relationships and our exceptional service. Today we employ over 1200 employees. We are constantly enhancing our expertise by hiring new and talented people. We see training staff more as a social responsibility than an 8
obligation; we see the training of our staff as our contribution to building the manpower needs of Ghana. It will interest you to know that more than half of the staff at CONSAR have been with the company for over 20 years and some have been with me from the very beginning. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our hardworking staff, who work very hard to see this company grow from project to project. A.G: Any future ambitions? SRP: I would love to see CONSAR become the leading construction company in the West African sub-region and in Africa as a whole. My son, Gianlucca, is studying construction management as a first step to achieving this objective and I am proud to say he is also excited by the prospects for future growth.
middle Mr Stefano Ramella, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
SRP: Giving back to society is a way to receive God’s blessing. We support a lot of social endeavors and only recently donated an ambulance to the Yedzi Hospital. A.G: You have successfully managed CONSAR for the past 25 years. What is your secret and what was your proudest moment? SRP: Dedication, commitment and hard work are essentials for any successful manager. I’m fully involved in all the projects at CONSAR. If I work hard as the owner, the staff will emulate me. I have a work culture where I get to work by 6am and work till 6pm each day. With time you observe your staff doing the same and we work as a team to achieve the best for our clients. My proudest moment would be when we successfully built the Baba Yara Stadium and the Komfo Anokye hospital simultaneously. A.G: Any words for our readers out there?

SRP: First of all I would thank God for the strength to achieve the things we have acheived and express my utmost appreciation to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his support and also to the Government of Ghana for the trust they have put in us. Werner Gutmann, area sales manager for Africa, Near East and South Asia, said the collaboration would see Swarovski make crystals available to local designers for use in their designs through Da Viva. In effect, Da Viva become the authorized wholesaler for Swarovski crystals in Ghana. The agreement involves a first time transfer of this kind of technology to Africa. You can now have Swarovski crystals on your shoes, belts, shirts or hats; or as designers you can make use of Swarovski crystals, only available at Da Viva, in your designs. According to Werner Gutmann, the Swarovski and the Da Viva agreement is a value addition to the fashion styles of Ghanaians. e

Nana Boroo unveiled as Ghanaian Malaria Ambassador
H
ip-life musician and Afro pop musician, Nana Boroo, has been unveiled as a malaria campaign icon in a renewed fight against the disease. Nana Osei Bonsu (Nana Boroo) is a talented performer who rocks the Ghanaian music scene with his genre of ‘Franco-hiplife’ music. According to the national malaria control programme, in 2009, one individual died from malaria every 3 hours. This means that about 3,000 people died of malaria in Ghana that year alone, most of them children.”
38
Severe malaria is a major cause of permanent brain damage and physical disability. Malaria is also a leading cause of miscarriage and stillbirths in pregnant women. The “Aha Ye De – Ntom tom be Wu” campaign is sponsored by USAID, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, John Hopkins University and Prompt Ghana. It highlights the importance of sleeping under treated mosquito nets at all times.
At the unveiling ceremony held at the Citizen Kofi Entertainment Centre in Osu, Nana Boro asked ghanaians to disabuse their minds of perceptions that it is outlandish to sleep under a mosquito net. He said the impact of the disease on the nation is devastating. It is a major drain on the nation’s coffers. According to him, it is a national duty to help minimize the incidence and effects of malaria.

Wine Pairing Dinner
C
itizen Kofi’s South American wine pairing dinner, the third in a monthly series, was held on Wednesday, June 22. All the wines were from the Vina Maipo winery in Chile and provided courtesy of Jean-Paul Feghali of Imexco. This monthly gathering began in April as an opportunity for people to sample wines from different regions whilst learning to pair them with different foods. Each wine pairing is presented as a five course meal designed by Citizen Kofi’s Executive Chef, Mario Gonzales. The guests at June’s dinner included His Excellency the Ambassador of France, the Ambassador of Canada, the French Consul and Michael Essien. The dinner has become a regular event for some of the patrons who have been very complimentary about the food and drink that have been served. The next wine pairing dinner will be on July 13 and will feature Italian inspired food paired with Italian wines. Book early to avoid disappointment. e

outh African Airways (SAA) held its prestigious CEO’s breakfast awards for 2010 in Durban, South Africa on the 9th May, 2011. The SAA CEO’S breakfast awards are held annually in May and coincide with Africa’s biggest travel & tourism show INDABA. This year, SAA hosted guests consisting of trade partners, top travel agents, regional country managers, sales executives, and other special guests. The CEO of SAA, Ms Siza Mzimela, outlined the 20112012 year plans for the airline and then moved to the serious business of awarding prizes to distinguished trade partners. Stellar Travel emerged the proud winner of SAA's travel and tourism award 2010 for North and West Africa. It was awarded in appreciation of their outstanding performance in the promotion of South African Airways and tourism to South Africa.

Cancer
Libra
21/3-20/04
22/6-23/07
24/9-23/10
You're winding down from an especially hectic June, dear Aries, but life definitely isn't slow in July! There are more errands to run, busy mental work, and plenty of diverse activities for you. Your heart, however, is with home and family, and making changes that help to bring more peace and beauty to your domestic life. You are taking special care of your personal possessions and you feel more stable on practical levels. This is an excellent month for financial rewards, promotional activities, and career advancement.
Taurus 21/4-21/05
Friendships can be especially pleasant and supportive this month, dear Cancer. A friend might be an important player in achieving your goals. Partnerships tend to be more goal-oriented, free-spirited, and tolerant in July. Some of you may take a friendship into unexplored romantic territory, or meet a significant person through a friend or group association. Relationships with children grow, and opportunities to have fun expand. You are also more focused and ambitious when it comes to your work and health and fitness programs. Self-care efforts thrive in July.
L eo 24/7-23/08
July is strong for gaining support, both financial and moral, dear Taurus. Your powers of persuasion are excellent. Close partnerships grow, and some of you might form new partnerships. You take better charge of your finances, particularly money shared with others or derived from other sources than your personal income. Trips could be especially rewarding, providing a pleasant breather from pressures in your life. You have a strong interest in broadening your mental experiences in general, and finding expression of your personality through them, perhaps through higher education or exploring different philosophies.
Gemini 22/5-21/06 Friends are seeking you out in July, dear Gemini, and you are in high demand! Asserting yourself comes naturally. Motivation to get going on pet projects and for pursuing your dreams is strong, so take advantage of this steady flow of energy. You're unlikely to run out of steam easily, particularly in the first week of the month. What you begin now tends to have long-term potential and can go far. A relationship may deepen due to the resolution of a long-standing problem. Some of you may enter a successful business partnership.
52
July can be a highly productive month for you, dear Leo. Your sometimes Herculean efforts, and your close attention to performance and details, will not go unrewarded! Some of your most natural talents meet with reward and acceptance. You are able to focus when it comes to creative output, and could work quite doggedly at a particular hobby or craft now, perhaps from behind the scenes. While July can have many practical benefits, personal advances are also likely. Romantic relationships deepen and intensify in July, and home life may be easier and happier.
Career matters take priority in your life in July, dear Libra. You might enjoy strong opportunities for presenting your ideas with charm, and you could find that your influence and powers of persuasion are enhanced. You might also enjoy benefits or support this month, particularly for home or home improvement endeavors. Some of you could acquire property. Job offers might arrive, or there could be improved working conditions and salary increases now. Any studies or skills improvement efforts can reap wonderful benefits down the road, so apply yourself as much as possible.
Scorpio 24/10-22/11 This month, the emphasis is on strengthening a close relationship, dear Scorpio. You learn a lot through your experiences and interactions, and the lines of communication open up between you and a special someone. There can be a real learning experience with someone with whom you can bounce ideas off and come to a better understanding of how you define yourself. Creative partnerships might be formed in July. Your financial picture improves, and you could find work in the communications industry especially fruitful. Negotiations tend to work in your favor.
Virgo
Sagittarius
24/8-23/09
23/11-21/12
Communications and transportation issues improve in July, dear Virgo. Studies are successful, and you are more ambitious and go-getting in your career. Those Virgos in the creative arts can inspire others with what they create, and can reach a broader audience. Romantic opportunities might come from people of an entirely different background or culture, or through education and travel, this month. You are especially organized in your home life, and more compassion and tolerance emerge in your relationships with family. You could feel more "in charge" of domestic matters.
www.enjoyaccra.com
Your sign is known for a love of adventure, dear Sagittarius, but recently you're finding more benefits from staying closer to home and concentrating on practical matters. You might enjoy financial benefits from increased attention to work in July. You can be very focused on what truly matters to get ahead. Your natural talents are likely to be utilized and appreciated - in your work. Some of you might find an opportunity to work from home, or in domestic-related fields. It's a strong month for feeling productive and valued.
