outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. They can hike pristine trails and uncharted territory, ride mountain bikes on novice and advanced trails, and even drive Jeeps on challenging courses during the annual Sheriff’s JeepFest. Yes, mountain living here is far from the urban sprawl, yet it’s less than an hour away from the heart of Atlanta, the state’s largest city. Unique shopping opportunities are found throughout Pickens County communities. From farmhouse-style boutiques to children’s specialty shops, there’s something for everyone.

JASPER:

MARBLE, MOUNTAINS, AND VINEYARDS Nicknamed The First Mountain City, Jasper is also known as the Marble Capital of Georgia. Especially unique is its pink marble, as seen at the historic Tate House. The county seat of Pickens County, Jasper boasts restaurants, retails shops, vineyards, and even a beautiful airport bustling with activity.

Whether you prefer a leisurely walk on a mountain trail or a serious seven-mile hike, you’ll find a trail groomed to your liking. Stop by the Visitors Center to pick up maps and more.

The city’s small-town atmosphere lends itself to a friendly mountain experience yet with plenty of interesting activities. Golf the links at Big Canoe or Bent Tree, explore the area’s Cherokee heritage, or enjoy dining in local restaurants. NELSON:

STONE CUTTERS AND A SPLIT CITY An early landowner, farmer, and rifle maker gets the honor of having one of Pickens County’s cities named after him. John Nelson was the namesake of the City of Nelson, located south of Tate and north of Ball Ground, Georgia. Incorporation came in 1891, forty-eight years after the city was established. Cherokee and Pickens counties share the City of Nelson, which has land on both sides of the county line, but the county line isn’t the only thing that splits the small town. The Georgia Northeastern Railroad runs right through downtown Nelson as well.

Jasper is conveniently located less than thirty minutes from more than a dozen beautiful vineyards. The temperate climate, mountainous terrain, and sweet soil has become a mecca for producing awardwinning grapes and wines. Sharp Mountain (pictured above), Fainting Goat, and Château Meichtry vineyards are three lovely choices within the boundaries of Pickens County. Each has acquired medals of greatness for its new-world wines. Drink in the beautiful scenery as you listen to live music and explore new flavors at any one of our area vineyards.

LIFESTYLE Named as one of the top “must see” places in Georgia by Georgia Magazine, the Tate House is one of the most photographed private homes in the state. This stunning mansion was built by Colonel Sam Tate in the 1830s and is now a highly sought-after wedding venue. The public is invited to tour the home during the Christmas holiday season.

continued from page 9

The residents aren’t split, though. They regularly gather for events such as the city-sponsored Movies at the Park held at Nelson Baseball Field during the summer.

renamed Harnageville, after Ambrose Harnage, because the county courts met in his home under the authorization of the Georgia General Assembly.

Marble fills the history of Nelson, which calls itself The First Georgia Marble City. Many stonecutters and other workers migrated from Italy and Scotland in the early years of the industry. Georgia Marble Company brought about fifty Italian families here for their skills in marble carving and sculpting. Nelson City Hall houses a museum celebrating this rich history.

In 1834 Colonel Samuel Tate purchased land in Harnageville and moved his family from Lumpkin County. He began construction of the Tate House in 1923, and the mansion was completed five years later. The Neo-Classical style home is constructed of pink and white Etowah marble supplied by Tate’s Georgia Marble Company.

SMALL-TOWN CHARM, RICH HISTORY

In 1880 the town was renamed to commemorate the life of Colonel Samuel Tate. His legacy continues to live on, as his beautiful home now serves as a wedding and special-events facility. The grand estate is often referred to as the Pink Palace or Pink Marble Mansion.

Those who live in Talking Rock take pride in its small-town charm and their hospitality. The third smallest town in the state hasn’t changed much since its beginnings in 1883 when the train served as its lifeline.

QUARRY LIFE

TALKING ROCK:

Nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains between Ellijay and Jasper, Talking Rock has a history filled with stories about the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, the railroad, and the Great Depression. One of the highlights in this small place comes in October with the Heritage Days Festival. Vendors from all over join with shop owners for two days of food, fun, and music.

MARBLE HILL:

Marble Hill is an unincorporated community in Pickens County located at the northeastern end of the marble quarry area. The town lies amid several mountains at the head of Long Swamp Valley. The nearby marble quarry gave the town its name. The U.S. Postal Service established a post office here in 1889.

Whether you come to visit or live in Pickens County, make sure to spend time in Talking Rock Park. It’s a great place for a family picnic or even a wedding.

MARBLE MAKES HISTORY, BUILDINGS History comes alive in Tate, an unincorporated Pickens County community. The Tate Historic District and the Georgia Marble Company are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Before the town of Tate was established, The U.S. Postal Service called the post office Marble Works. Later the area was

is an annual celebration of the marble industry’s historic value to the community. The Pickens County Chamber of Commerce hosts the festival at Lee Newton Park in Jasper on the first full weekend in October. The public can tour the largest open pit marble quarry in the world. Marble from this quarry has been used to construct the Lincoln Memorial, twenty-four columns on the east front of the U.S. Capitol, and our local Tate Elementary School. Enjoy arts, crafts, live music, a fine art gallery, parade, road race, quarry tours, a kids zone, pottery, chainsaw carving, festival food, and more. Boiled peanuts, home-grown preserves, and a variety of sauces and salsas are often found at roadside stands throughout Pickens County.

Private communities like Bent Tree and Big Canoe draw visitors and newcomers from around the country.

Bent Tree Community has an extensive equestrian program that includes boarding, lessons, trail rides, and horse shows.

continued from page 10

You won’t find evidence of it these days, but the first Catholic Church in Pickens County was built here, according to History of Pickens County by Luke E. Tate, 1935. Marble cutters who came to work for the Piedmont Marble Company built and dedicated the church, which was said to be in use from 1895 to 1897. When the job was done the workers returned to their former homes and the church fell into disrepair. A seminarian assigned to the Archdiocese of Atlanta spent time in 2015 trying to find the long-lost mission but was unable to discover any physical evidence or deeds in either the Pickens County courthouse or the Georgia Marble Company’s historic records. Nonetheless, the archdiocese continues to list a church built in 1896 in the vacinity of Tate as the first Catholic Church built in the area.

BENT TREE:

OUTDOOR BEAUTY AND COZY INDOOR AMENITIES Unparalleled natural beauty greets homeowners when they wake up in the mornings at Bent Tree. Framed by the majestic Appalachian Mountains, this vibrant community dates back nearly fifty years and continues to provide residents and visitors with Southern hospitality. It’s close enough to Atlanta for convenience yet far from urban sprawl and traffic jams. Whether you like hiking or other outdoor activities, you’ll find something to love in Bent Tree. The community offers boating on Lake Tamarack, golf, tennis, pickleball, fishing, and equestrian events. Dogs aren’t forgotten, as a wonderfully appointed dog park near the Grandview entrance offers canine friends plenty of room to run and play. Club Tamarack serves as a hub for community events and is also available for private gatherings. Three separate venues are available: Dining Room, Recreation Room, and Fireside Lounge. The Cottage gives residents a local library and a cozy meeting place for small groups.

The Paleo Indians were the first people known to live on these lands as many as 15,000 years ago. Today about three thousand people call the gated community of Big Canoe home for at least part of the year. The more than eight thousand acres of land in Dawson and Pickens counties includes three man-made lakes: Petit, Sconti, and Disharoon. Lake Petit, the largest, supplies drinking water to the community. 4:20 AM Nearly one-third of the total property has been set aside as wildlife areas and parks. Three lakes, three picturesque waterfalls, and more than twenty miles of hiking trails draw residents to Big Canoe. No one forgets about the kids at Big Canoe, where a world of adventure awaits. Here they enjoy youth golf and tennis lessons, clinics, and summer camps. Family fun includes events such as Easter egg hunts, Fourth of July fireworks, and Trick or Trunk. Kids Corner Big Canoe attracts almost two hundred school-age children to participate in ongoing social activities.

Big Canoe residents also find plenty of dining opportunities both inside its gates and in neighboring towns. Inside the gates hungry folks can find the Mountains Grill at the Clubhouse on Lake Sconti, Black Bear Pub and Sunset Veranda at The Clubhouse, and Duffers just steps away from the golf course, all close to home. In addition, local restaurant favorites such as Fuego Mexican Grill and Home are nearby outside the gates. Whether you’re exploring history, shopping the boutiques, or enjoying the great outdoors, breathing is easier in Pickens County. It’s a scientific fact. The Blue Ridge Mountains keep the air quality index of Pickens about fifteen percent better than the national average. The same mountains keep residents cooler than in the big city of HOTlanta (a.k.a. Atlanta). Jasper’s average high temperature during July and August reaches a pleasant eighty-five degrees, and the average low temperature in January sits at a mild thirty degrees. Welcome to paradise! ¢

Labor Day weekend in Jasper means it’s time for the annual Pickens Sheriff’s JeepFest. Most of the fun happens on a spot nestled between Georgia Highway 53 and two flowing creeks—the Darnell and East Branch Long Swamp creeks. If you want to destroy a police car, navigate obstacle courses, maneuver rugged forest trails, or engage in exhilarating challenges, this is your opportunity. The Mud Pit Challenge dares owners to drive their registered Jeeps into a muddy path with water as deep as their tires. Karnage Klimb pits Jeeps and their drivers against a steep hill strewn with boulders, requiring a climb like no other.

Sheriff Donnie Craig and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office started Jeepfest as an annual event that helps provide needy children with a place to live, healthy food, clothing, supplies, and above all else, love.

14 | www.PickensChamber.com

In 2009 tornadoes devastated the Pickens community. Sheriff Donnie Craig took action by forming the Pickens Sheriff’s Foundation to provide children in need with housing, food, and clothing. Through this initiative, JeepFest was born and has since become the foundation’s largest source of funding. In 2017 local charities received more than $165,000 from the foundation. ¢ SheriffsJeepFest.com 2020-2021 | Community Profile & Membership Directory

it was a small portion of what people called the Land of the Cherokees. The Land of the Cherokees included all land west of the Chattahoochee River and north of Carroll County.

In 1805 the federal government paid the Cherokee nation $500 when Native Americans and the federal government signed the Treaty of Tellico, which allowed the construction of an “open and free road for the use of the citizens of the United States.” The federal road followed and included a trail called the Middle Cherokee Trading path. This road connected trading posts between Augusta, Georgia, with Nashville, Tennessee, and served as a direct link to the navigable Tennessee River. The road was a critical link for trade. General Andrew Jackson, “Old Hickory” himself, gets credit for building much of the road. Taverns served as rest stops along the federal road and Native Americans, white people, and interracial families staffed them. In 1817 Georgia Presbyterians came to the area to build mission schools. In 1819, they established the Taloney Mission along Talking Rock Creek to reach Cherokee children. The Presbyterians continued to build mission schools throughout this area and the state for more than fifteen years.

This statue and many others can be found on the grounds of the historic Tate House.

of a different type of valuable natural commodity—marble. More than fifty years would pass, however, before the marble industry felt a surge of growth. Until then, gold was king. In 1831 the Land of the Cherokees was officially named Cherokee County by the Georgia legislature. Although Pickens County was not yet formed from that territory, what is now Pickens County became rooted on a little more than thirty miles of that critical trade route. Discovery of gold in the late 1820s led to speculation and demand for land in the Cherokee nation. In 1832 Georgia instituted a land lottery in which the Cherokee lands were distributed to white men. This act led to Congress passing the Indian Removal Act, which President Jackson signed into law because he knew he could not protect the Cherokee people from expansion of the new nation of America. The removal of the Cherokee people westward later became known as the 1838 Trail of Tears. That same year, the state split Cherokee into multiple counties: Forsyth, Lumpkin, Union, Cobb, Gilmer, Murray, Cass (now Bartow), Floyd, and Paulding. The legislators carved out pieces of Gilmer to the north and Cherokee to the south to form Pickens County in 1853. It took about continued on page 48

The History of

YOU’LL FIND MARBLE from Pickens County in the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln

Memorial and more than sixty percent of the monuments in Washington, D.C. Even the governor of Georgia has a piece of local marble on his desk—the nameplate. While historians report that Native Americans used marble found in Pickens County as early as 1400, it wasn’t until the 1830s that the first marble quarries and the first marble mill opened. In 1835 Henry Fitzsimmons, a Scottish stonemason, stumbled upon an outcrop of the world’s richest deposit of white crystalline marble. The marble deposit runs from five to seven miles long, a half-mile wide, and up to two thousand feet deep. Fitzsimmons found this deposit on what the Cherokee people called Long Swamp Valley. The following year, 1836, Fitzsimmons opened the first quarry and finishing mill in the state of Georgia. The mill was focused on manufacturing tombstones and was located near where the Marble Hill Post Office was later established in 1842. Over the next fifty years more marble companies opened operations, including Tate, Adkinson & Company in 1847. Fitzsimmons operated his quarries and mill until he was murdered on December 24, 1844, in a knife fight at a tavern. In 1845 Samuel Tate leased some of his land to James Gideon, James Holmes, and Gideon Roberts, all from Alabama, to open a finishing mill on Long Swamp Creek. Sumney & Hurlick reopened the Perseverance Quarry east of Jasper in 1857. The company was successful until the Civil War, when the sheriff dissolved it in 1867 to pay the company’s debts. In 1883, with the opening of the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad line, shipping the marble outside of the region became convenient. A year later, in May 1884, a group of Yankee investors chartered the Georgia Marble Company and

in Pickens County capitalized it with a million dollars with an option of an additional $500,000. The company spent $800,000 on finishing mills, an added branch rail line to the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad, and land.

eighteen years for the dust to settle between Cherokee, Gilmer, and Pickens counties as land was peacefully transferred back and forth. The final county borders were established in 1870. Pickens County was named after Andrew Pickens, a brigadier general during the American Revolution who also served in the South Carolina legislature and Congress.

Pickens County Historical Society Facebook: PickensHistoricalSociety

War divides people. Pickens County is no exception. Prior to the start of the American Civil War in 1861, community leaders voted against secession from the Union. Protest of Georgia’s secession was strong in the county, and citizens voluntarily guarded the U.S. flag flying over the courthouse as long as possible. As war became eminent, a Rebel flag was raised over the

courthouse, and citizens from Pickens County became divided. Some of the men joined the Confederate army and others the Union. Brothers fought against brothers. During the war Jasper was occupied by both armies at different times, often ending in gruesome battles. As the war came to a close, Pickens County once again raised the Stars and Stripes above the courthouse where it still waves today. The fortunes of Pickens County changed with the coming of the Marietta & Georgia Railroad in 1883. On May 1, 1884, Yankee investors formed the Georgia Marble Company. With a total of a $1.5 million investment, the Georgia Marble Company built a rail line to meet the Marietta & Georgia. The Tate estate leased much of the quarry land to other companies. Colonel Sam Tate became president and general manager of the Georgia Marble Company in 1905. From this beginning, Pickens County marble made its mark in local schools and in sixty percent of the monuments in Washington, D.C. Marble buyers the world over still favor quarries in Pickens County for countertops, monuments, and other building uses.

In 1883 the railroad made its way into Pickens County. The Georgia Marble Company added to the line to help business.

In the early 1970s, luxury mountain community developments began emerging in Pickens County. Bent Tree and Big Canoe became a place for summer homes and retreats for wealthy Atlantans. Today these areas have grown to include affordable full-time residences, multiple golf courses, and countless other amenities while preserving the natural beauty of the land. In 1979 Georgia State Route 515 began construction and later became the lifeline of Pickens County. This major corridor was completed in 1987 and continues to serve as a direct connector to Atlanta. No longer isolated in the mountains of North Georgia, Pickens County is a pleasant, small-town community with all the conveniences of a big city just a few miles down the road.

VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

THE CITY OF JASPER, Pickens County, and local

veterans dedicated the Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park in August 2018. One person led the way to create the majestic memorial: Captain Wayne Poore. In 2014, Wayne formulated the idea of creating a memorial park to celebrate the sacrifices and patriotism of Pickens County veterans. In 2016 he established a nonprofit organization to oversee the design and implementation of the park. Only two years later, the completed park was dedicated adjacent to the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce on Veterans Memorial Boulevard (formerly Stegall Drive).

of Pickens County. John Trammell, now retired but then CEO of the Community Bank of Pickens County, served as the volunteer project manager working hand-in-hand with the nonprofit’s senior vice president and general manager, Ray Smith. Together they brought to life Wayne’s vision of a peaceful, attractive, and respectful memorial—a place where residents and visitors can come to reflect on the men and women who have given so much for the betterment of our community and country. ¢

Born and raised in Decatur, Georgia, Wayne traveled the world as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon retirement, Wayne chose to settle in Jasper and has been an active member of the community for more than twenty years. Wayne started a campaign to create the memorial and with the help of Pickens County volunteers raised more than $100,000 to build it by selling 739 Bricks of Honor. Each brick honors a veteran and is a permanent part of the display. Interested community members are still welcome to purchase bricks in support of park maintenance and the development of the park’s second phase. Many local businesses and families helped raise awareness and funds for the project. The primary sponsor was the Community Bank For more information, contact: (706) 253-0501 PickensVetMemorial@gmail.com | www.PickensVetMemorial.com

five years before the start of the Civil War, William Sosebee became the first sheriff of Pickens County and served two nonconsecutive terms. During Sosebee’s first year in office, he oversaw the construction of the community’s first jailhouse. The facility was a poorly constructed two-story log building near Jasper’s current County Courthouse. When construction was completed in 1855, Sosebee and his family followed convention and moved into the first floor of the jailhouse. Prisoners were incarcerated in cells on the second floor of the jailhouse. In 1859 Sosebee died during his second term in office. Before the close of the Civil War in 1865, during Sheriff D. S. McCrary’s term of office, the log jailhouse was destroyed by unknown means. Prisoners were transported to Forsyth and Cherokee county jails until a new jail could be erected. The second jail was completed in 1867, and it was less than perfect from the start. The structure was primarily made of wood, apparently lacked a solid foundation, was poorly ventilated, and quickly rotted from ground water. Nine sheriffs served their terms in the second jailhouse, two of which died while in office. The first sheriff to occupy the jailhouse was Sheriff John Lindsey. He died of malaria in 1881. The second sheriff was John Johnson,

and he passed away of undocumented reasons in 1891. After the death of Sheriff Johnson, Jasper’s local newspaper, The Piedmont Republican, reported, “The walls and sills resting on the ground never dry. The walls, sills, and wooden parts are thoroughly saturated with typhoid malaria.” The newspaper went on to say, “Occupants are nearly always sick, and death continually stares them in the face.” Shortly thereafter, a special grand jury ordered that a new jail be built at the earliest possible date. Unfortunately fifteen years passed before the community would see a new jail. Seven other sheriffs and their families occupied the jailhouse living quarters throughout the years and were often reported as being critically ill.

The third jailhouse still stands in downtown Jasper. It was inducted into the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1984 and is allegedly haunted. Finally in 1906 a third jailhouse was built at 141 North Main Street in Jasper where it still stands today. It’s a beautiful marble-faced building that has become an icon. The county used this jail until 1982. In keeping with tradition, sheriffs or deputies and their families

were allowed to live rent free on the first floor, and the building provided sixteen prisoner cell blocks upstairs. The second floor also housed gallows that were never used.

Bricks of Honor Available

The fourth jailhouse was built in front of the existing jail and was active for twenty-four years (1982 until 2006). That building was demolished when the new jail was completed, and all that remains is a pink marble historical monument placed near the former foundation of the third jail. Today prisoners are held in the fifth jailhouse—the Pickens County Adult Detention Center—on Camp Road. It’s a modern facility that can house up to 154 inmates.

Pickens County has owned the third and most famous of the Pickens jailhouses since 1982. The Marble Valley Historical Society originally maintained the historical structure, but today the Pickens Historical www.PickensVetMemorial.com • (706) 253-0501 • PickensVetMemorial@gmail.com Society maintains it. Over the years the building had become a depot for donations of historical items. Recently the Pickens County Historical Society has been cleaning out and repairing the old Auto Home Life Business Umbrella 1906 jail to create a history museum and visitor’s center with those donations as well as arts and crafts by local Appalachian artisans. PICK19-VetMemorialPark-EPADjld.indd 1 11/5/19 Pickens County Historical Society President Bill Cagle says the society hopes to install an HVAC system to preserve memorabilia such as historical documents, books, and photos. Cagle has been collaborating with Kennesaw State University to set up the museum and looks forward to booking quarterly local history talks.

Pickens Digs Mining

Pickens County is a significant community in Georgia. While proud of its heritage in the marble industry, the county and its surrounding region continue to make a demonstrated effort to remain progressive. That effort has resulted in strong economic growth.

It’s estimated that more than three hundred responsible neighbors work in the county’s marble mines. The companies employing these hardworking people are dedicated to safety, diversity, and fairness.

Jasper, the county seat, is a thriving place for small businesses to grow roots and ideal for office-based, retail, and restaurant opportunities. At its core, this community has a diverse economic foundation built on a firm base of the healthcare, education, manufacturing, retail, and tourism industries.

Arguably, the most pristine crystalline in the world is respectfully unearthed from these lands daily. The Cherokee people first began marble work, and some of those pieces are still in existence today.

Pickens County Airport Visiting the Pickens County Airport is a sure hit with family and friends. Relax in a rocking chair on the front porch, enjoy the view, watch operations, and hear pilots making radio calls. You will see military and civilian aircraft of all classes, including small business jets, thanks to its 5,000-foot long, 100-foot wide runway, said Airport Manager Randy Thomason. Bank presidents, real estate executives, aerial surveyors, and corporate executives use the airport. Contractors who maintain power line rights of way fly in and out of here as well. The Georgia Forestry Fire Service moved its flight operations here from Macon to get closer to search the North Georgia mountains in fire season. Pilots either reserve space in one of the airport’s fourteen hangars or use tie downs outside. The thirty-two pilots who put down deposits for future hangar space openings show the demand. “I truly believe if I had 100 hangars, I’d have them filled within three years,” Thomason said. Flight schools at Pickens County Airport include Get Inspired Flight (www.getinspiredflight.com), and Planes World (https://planesworld.net/). Cherokee Flight (www.cherokeeflight.com) also operates planes out of this airport. Thomason said the airport’s five-year plan for capital improvement projects includes extending the runway to 5,505 feet so jets will be able to take off with full fuel loads. He anticipates this will soon be submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation and the FAA. A longer runway would increase traffic and jet fuel sales. Self-service pumps enable the airport to stay open 24/7 for fuel sales. Aircraft sales and fuel sales generate sales taxes, including SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax). A portion of those local tax dollars gets returned to the airport through grants for airport improvements. Since 1975, $7.5 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation has been spent on capital improvements, with the county providing a $440,000 match of that in local funds and another $469,000 coming from the state. ¢ 193 Pickens Airport Rd, Jasper, GA 30143
