FALL / WINTER 2023–2024
THE BUZZ | AQUATIC CENTER | THE WREC PlayCherokee.org
After nearly two years of hard work, the Cherokee Recreation & Parks Agency (CRPA) achieved national accreditation. The CRPA completed the 18-month self-assessment phase of the process, submitted the report in March 2021, and successfully completed the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) site visit in May 2021. As part of the CAPRA process, CRPA approved and instituted a new Standard Operations Procedures Manual covering more than 50 new or amended policies and procedures, instituted a new Park Maintenance Manual that guides maintenance processes and schedules in all 23 parks and facilities, adopted a new strategic plan that will guide program and facility development for the next five years, and trained staff in areas such as de-escalation tactics, developing and evaluating programs, using social media, and reducing risk in agency programs and facilities. At the CAPRA hearing in late summer of 2022, the agency officially passed 149 out of 154 standards, becoming just the eleventh accredited agency in Georgia.
Currently, 11 full-time employees at Cherokee Recreation & Parks are Certified Parks & Recreation Professionals. A Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is the national standard for all parks and recreation professionals who want to be at the forefront of their professions. Attaining the CPRP designation shows that one has met education and experience qualifications; it illustrates one’s commitment to the profession and one’s knowledge of key concepts within parks and recreation. We are proud to have so many employees who want to continue their education to make Cherokee Recreation & Parks the best that we can be.
Today’s youth sports climate overflows with programming choices, making it challenging for organizations to stand out and for parents to gauge which programs can deliver high-quality experiences for young athletes. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation recognizes those organizations that have met an equally high standard when administering youth sports programming. Earning the designation means that the staff takes the necessary steps to ensure a safe, quality playing environment for children. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation, developed around the National Standards for Youth Sports, is a way to recognize and promote youth sports organizations that make quality a priority. If an organization meets the benchmark requirements of the designation, parents are confident that important safety measures are in place.
