2010-2011 Semester I Issue # 3

Mad Science by Luis Leon, YELS

This issue from Juarez-Lincoln ACE Fall 2010 students, faculty, and staff is dedicated to all those who came believing in a sign that reads “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free... and were denied.

SPEECHLESS’ INTRODUCTION Speechless is Jurarez-Lincoln ACE’s creative writing & art magazine. This is an opportunity for JL ACE to showcase its artists. Art is subjective and means something different to every person. It is in a constant state of change, so you can never really pin down what it is other than thought provoking. Freedom: Philosophy. the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self-determination.

Speechless The Freedom Issue Issue # 3 Fall 2010 Speechless members at large: Cantu, Juan, Copy Editor Flores, Blanca, Spanish Editor Leon, Luis, Art Editor Noyola, Esmeralda, Chief Editor Mejia, Esther, Copy Editor Ramirez, Fernando, Poet Salmeron, Victor, Poet

Speechless would like to thank Mr. M. Troncoso again for letting us express ourselves through this magazine, along with the entire massive JL ACE English and Art Departments for continuing to introduce JL ACE artists to our community. “Thank you for helping set our aspirations free.” J-L ACE

Speechless NOTE: Speechless will be coming out every semester. All letters to the editor are welcome; however, please limit the length of each letter to one double-spaced page of which some may be published in our next issue with your consent. Include your name and e-mail address. For more information on Speechless contact E. Noyola, rm # 18 at JLACE or e-mail. E.noyola@ljisd.com MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL The amount of freedom we get is always directly proportional to our personal commitment to education. The more education we have, the more freedom we get. The fear of losing our freedom will always lead us to the joy of keeping our freedom. Education and freedom do not come to those who want them, but to those who look for them. It is not about how we are going to be free but about how we are going to learn to be free. Freedom is about having choices and education will give you the power to choose. At Juarez -Lincoln ACE, we understand. After all, we all were teenagers once. We know that many of the things you count on don’t count, but the things you don’t count on are the ones that count. There is a fine line between freedom and lack of restrictions. As long as we do not affect the freedom of others, freedom is to do whatever we want. Freedom is similar to success. When you go from failure to failure and never give up you are free. Is freedom real or is it just a dream? You just have to look up at the sky on a clear night, stare at the stars for a few seconds, and you will realize that freedom, like God, really does exist!

We know it’s not that simple, but it is worth a try.

Mario Troncoso, JL Ace Principal SPEECHLESS

Urban Art: A Way to Free Your Mind Urban art, bEtter known as ‚graffiti,‛ is thought to be vandalism, a way for ganGs and crews to mark their territOry. People see them as delinquents escaping at night to be rebellious ‚big shots‛. With some crews they are somewhat right, but what they don’t know is some kIds that sneak out of their rooms do it to see the world in a different perSpective. Urban ArtisTs have passion for it. The ones tHat don’t just want to find a stop sign to put a ‚tag‛ on or a local businEss to drop a ‘bomb‛ on. No, they go under a bridge, a burned up building, or an old abandoned building. These are the places that have been forgOtten and which the state either doesn’t waNt to waste money knocking down or rebuilding. The artists look for thEse buildings to free their mind and express how they feel. For example, say the artist is sad, disappointed, or mad; they could take it out with paint. The mural will be dark and scary with intense colors as if you were in hell! If the artist is glad, excited, or just plain happy, he will express how he feels with light bright vivid colors as if you were in heaven! Yes, at first I was dropping bombs, but now I don’t even focus on walls. I focus on paper and canvass. Behind every mural there is a story. What’s your story? Written & Drawn by Luis Leon, aka YELS

Senses The sensations that I feel being close to her are truly strange for me. I love being with her, seeing her, feeling her, listening to her, smelling her aroma. It’s something beautiful. Tasting her kisses that taste of the finest wine. She looks like the most gorgeous and brilliant stars. When she gets close to me I can smell her aroma as my favorite perfume. I can’t stop caressing her rose petal soft skin when she’s near. I’ve never actually touched them, but I can imagine that she is better still. Listening to her voice I feel as if I hear her singing, “Te Quiero”. This is strange to me only because it all happens in just seconds. She floods my senses. How can my senses have such a powerful effect on me? By Juan Herrera, Smurf

By Eddie Velazquez

Spanish Rocket I love to talk, don’t you know. But don’t say much. I love to laugh, don’t you know. But nothing is amusing. I love to get my own way, don’t you know. Whatever it takes. The rules don’t apply to me, don’t you know. I love my sunglasses, don’t you know. But there’s no sun. I love to be loud, don’t you know. But no one listens. I love to be noticed, don’t you know. But I’m transparent. I love to fly, don’t you know.

With You Forget Her Do you ever think about me? Do you ever cry yourself to sleep? In the middle of the night Are you calling out my name? Forget her, By Priscilla Lopez, Pilli, Inspired by a publication from an unknown author.

Without her I’m free of her now Why do I want her next to me? She was always complaining

How should I be with you To let you know That’s where I want to be? How shall I let you know I see your face glow When you catch me Searching your eyes Everything vanishes? You and I An eye for an eye How should I explain this, That your lips are my source of life? Don’t know if I would live forever or die Once our lips lock Would I lose my life Or gain a wife?

By Fernando Ramirez, Ferny

I want to hear her voice She was always lying Why do I want her to speak to me? I messed up She hates me now I miss her She cooked and cleaned My house is a disaster She nagged and screamed I cant live without her. Anonymous

How can I stay? Life

It is just not the same

Sometimes I sit and I wonder when will I meet my death.

Today and yesterday

Will this be my first or last breath?

Never come together

God brought me here and he’ll take me away.

But never fall apart

He’s the one that can make me or break me today. Surrounded by envy on a daily bases,

Like me and you

Trust nobody there's too many double faces.

We’re not together

Loved by few but hated by many,

Nor ever apart

I fight for my skin the color of a penny.

It’s an affair That’s never fair

Just Leave Why don ’ t you just leave all you do is make me bleed Even though there are no drops of blood It did flood My heart with the tears dropped from my eyes near My heart and it sheds like rose petals in the fall As much as I ’ ve cried I have never fallen to the ground I may look happy but deep inside I ’ m down All I thought was of you, it ’ s true Now all I think is how to get rid of you.

Time

Many Colors

I look in the mirror and see the real me Behind bars killing time but will time kill me?

Just let go

The clock keeps moving but I stay behind

Set your mind free

I look at the time I can’t stop it

express your mind artistically

Fast forward, nor press rewind Be silent and listen to the clock as it ticks and tocks

Just let my mind roam show your feelings with color, angles, pieces Dark colors when you’re mad Light colors when you’re happy Many colors when you have mixed feelings

What would you say or ask time if it were able to speak? No remorse nor pity, solid like stone lying on solid ground I won’t attempt to fight time because it’ll beat me every round My eyes feeling sore by the tears I done shed Tired of all the fake and real my eyes done read
