SPEECHLESS’ INTRODUCTION

Speechless The Escapism Issue Issue # 1 Spring 2010 Speechless members at large: Cline, B. DeLosSantos, J. Flores, Blanca Flores, Carlos Noyola, Esmeralda Patiño, Rosalba

Speechless is Jurarez-Lincoln ACE‟s new literary & arts magazine. This is an opportunity for JL ACE to showcase its artists. Art is subjective and means something different to every person. It is in a constant state of change, so you can never really pin down what it is. Escapism is the avoidance of reality by absorption of the mind in entertainment or in an imaginative situation, activity, etc. No matter who we are we always feel the need to lose ourselves. This issue expresses the way JL ACE students escape from the different aspects of just being teens and in high school. We hope you enjoy our expression. Speechless would like to send a special thanks to Mr. M. Troncoso for letting us express ourselves through this magazine, along with Ms. De Los Santos, the entire English and Art Departments for introducing JL ACE artists to our community.

Speechless NOTE: Speechless will be coming out every semester. No work or any part of this issue may be reproduced (quoted, copied, photographed, videotaped, or broadcast) without the written consent of the artist or writer. All letters to the editor are welcome; however, please limit the length of each letter to one double-spaced page of which some may be published in our next issue with your consent. Include your name and e-mail address. Drawing by Anonymous

2009-2010 has been a GREAT academic year so far! Students are working hard to obtain the credits they need. Many students have accomplished their goal by earning their required courses and have returned to the main campus at Juarez-Lincoln High School. The staff at J-L Ace has been working hard to help you, the student, with your schedules and credits. We would like to welcome our newest staff member, Assistant Principal J.C. Flores. He is an added asset to our school. Welcome back students to the Spring Semester where “Success is Yours.” Mario Troncoso-Principal

El Park Yo sé que somos el uno para el otro aunque nadie lo quiera. You know there was no love in the start but all of a sudden you broke into my heart like a burglar. Do you remember the park? Lit Sister,

Hermana! ¿Porque me dejas sola? Te nececito mas que nunca. ¡No se que puedo hacer sin ti! Cuando me enciendo te siento cerca. Enciéndete tu, prendeme a mi.

By Cindy Cruz JLAce

Life in Juvie When I got to Juvie the first day they stripped me down, gave me a blue shirt, blue shorts, blue shoes, sports bra, and guy underwear. Yeah, I know. Then, they take you to your room, mine was B16. They give you two blankets and one that goes over your “new” mattress. They‟re blue too. Oh and you have to take a shower for five minutes. The good thing is the water is hot and believe me it‟s hot. At 12:00 pm you eat whatever they give you. At 1:00 pm you take showers. At 2:00 pm you go to class. At 2:30 pm we‟re back in our rooms where we stay till 3:00pm. At that time we get out into the little area where there are tables. There you can talk and play cards. At 4:00pm we write, if you want to, to whoever you feel like. We only get 30 minutes. Then, we‟re back in our room till 5:00 pm and we have dinner. They always gave us sack lunches and lemonade. We brush our teeth after every meal. At 6:00 pm we go to the gym, where there is only one basket and one ball. 7:00 pm, back to playing cards. We call our parents one at a time for five minutes. At 8:00 pm we get a snack like yogurt or animal cookies and we get incoming calls. That‟s usually when our parents call us after saying who they are, your birth date, or otherwise they aren‟t allowed to speak to us. At 9:00 pm We can call back, but to only if you made it for “bonus”. Which means; every day you start off with a new set of points and during the whole day if you behave bad you don‟t get any calls. At 9:30 pm we‟re in our rooms. They only let us have books or playing cards. At 6:30 am we‟re in our box rooms. They only let us have a book or playing cards. At 6:30 am we clean our restrooms and mop our floor. 7:00 am were exercising in front of our doors for 20 minutes. At 7:30 am we go eat. The next day, it‟s the same thing all over again. They don‟t let us have pencils in case anything strange happens. The same schedule is everyday. It‟s boring and nothing you can‟t handle is boring.

Never

Tu Olvido….

By Lorena Vela

If u really don‟t care. Never talk about felinz, If they aren't really there. Never hold my hand, If ur going to break my heart. Never say ur going to, If u don‟t plan to start. Never look into my eyes, If all u see is a lie. Never say hello, If u really mean good-bye. If u mean forever, Then say u‟ll try. Never to say forever, Cuz forever makes me cry.

Alright You came to me one day, I felt that everything was alright until it hit one night It felt dark as if there was no light Something just didn‟t feel right My body felt tight I thought I was going to lose my sight Someone called and said you were in a fight When I arrived, I saw you were alright Then, out of sight a car pulled up and nothing seemed right I heard two things and saw blasts of light I yelled hoping you were alright I laid by your side And cried as you died. Since there was you There has been no one else I can‟t explain why I just want you to myself I thought I‟d never see the day You wouldn‟t be here with me I cared for you so much But my love you couldn‟t see Soon you will realize That what you did was wrong Every time you hear the radio playing our song So, I will say to myself You weren‟t meant for me For the love I thought was real ….wasn‟t meant to be Drawing by Carlos Flores

PACHUCOS CHOLOS Y CHUNDOS, CHINCHINFLAS Y MALAFACHAS ACA LOS CHOMPIRAS RIFAN Y BAILAN TIBIRITABARA ….Café Tacuba That‟s what they call us. People make ugly faces when I say I‟m from the valley and then apologize when I say I go to school in La Joya. I am not La Joya; La Joya is me. I wash my car at the local Kar Guach, buy my cokes at the Ramos Drav True and like to hang out in Panbui sometimes. Don‟t judge me because my English and much less my Spanish ain‟t that good. Don‟t judge me because I role up my jeans – sometimes it‟s just da style. Don‟t judge me cuz I wear a rosary. Don‟t judge me for my hair cut. Don‟t judge me because my clothes are baggy. Don‟t be afraid of me because of my tattoos and piercing. TALK TO ME! Get to know me. I‟m not this that I wear. I wear it; don‟t think for a second it wears me. I‟m a good kid. You know me. Escaping the Reality When I am close to you, I feel like my life is put back together, including my heart. But each time you leave, everything is broken apart. I still daydream though, that you’re next to me… …I want to hold your hand tightly, never wanting to let go, knowing if I do, you will leave and not come back until.. Wait, why am I imagining this? You’re not here, you’re far away from my reach, My reach to give you a kiss my reach to give you a kiss…oh how much I do want to… My eyes close and I see you next to me again, you brighten up my face, I smile from ear to ear, I start to reach out for you, but…I suddenly wake up, and your gone, my eye lets out a tear. How come I’m in and out in this trance? I want to stay in one side. I want to stay with you. Is there any chance? If not. I’m done. As the idea pops out, it comes hard and hits my head, “you should have had an V8!” it shrieks, I shake my head, not because of the pain, but of the realization. All these “Daydreams” come inside my head because I want to escape this reality. This…reality I want to claim as hell. Reality…that makes my heart burn and cry. That…I may escape, I beg, the future I can’t tell. I’m…really inappreciable to have you in my life. Escaping…this lonesome feeling I’m trying, though, From…your point of view, you see that I am dying slowly. Is…it because I’m without you most of the time? Obviously. Dreadful…is the feeling I get, right after you leave.

The Fly MY PLACE My place, my comfort, my mind. Just when my eyelids close, I collapse with a sweet dream. A place with gratitude, a place where I am wanted. A place where I exist in the world. I feel light in grace, I feel heavy with love. I am beauty. I have might. In my mind, all things never waste with time. I just wish this place would never go away. My heart is the key to my place. My last resort is a glance at reality. My place is warm and welcoming.

Out near a cabin late one afternoon, An old man sat sipping tea with a spoon, When suddenly, he heard a tiny voice call to him Out near the lake where he goes to go swim. The old man got up with such anxiety and interest, For he was tired of sitting and no longer needed rest. He walked to the voice which was still crying, Until he got to the place where the insect was lying. -”Oh no, poor fly, how might you need my help?” -“To help me to fly,” the poor insect yelped. And so the old man carried the fly out to the open, So the little poor fly could get her asked token. -“Fly little fly, fly like the wind” But the poor little fly just couldn’t follow the wind. -“Oh fly, why don’t you fly?” -“Its not that I can’t, don’t you see how I try?” -“It would be a lie if you told me you’re trying, So please try to fly, and please…stop crying.” The old man knew why the fly couldn’t fly. He couldn’t fulfill its one last token. The old man, now, at the edge to cry, Noticed the poor little fly’s wing was broken.

My future, past and my soul lays before me, Which has set goals and made rules And bounds to make me smile. All I do is make this time last for a while, Until I open my eyes and see The chaos of life and death.

-“Enough practice now, we’ll try again tomorrow. Now let’s go back home,” said the man with great sorrow. In home the old man did as best to cheer up the fly. He himself even pretended he was a fly. They talked together, And laid side by side against one another. They watched the stars through the window of his cabin, Revealing that his name was Carl McAlvin. And the little fly saying she had no name, Which to that the fly answered with a great deed of shame. The man put the fly in a little match box, And set it next to his collection of dead frogs. All through the night the poor insect wept, And it couldn’t sleep, as it twisted in bed.

By Graciela Vasquez JL HS

The next morning, the old man got up as cheery as ever. Ready for the long day ahead. Little did he know however, That the fly he’d so much gotten to love was now dead. By Juan Mendoza JL HS SPEECHLESS
