This portfolio contains some of my most significant works in the last years both inside the academy and outside independently and mostly concern Architecture, Design and Art. Each project had its own way of being presented, but for convenience in this book are all shown with the same layout, while keeping their communicative spirit and their significant value.

AROUND THE VILLA The objective of this academic course was to examine the relationship between our architectural heritage and its background on one side and the importance of the contemporary architectonic project on the other; particular attention was payed to the specific case of numerous historical villas and parks in Veneto suffocated by the chaotic urbanization which took place during the twentieth century. In order to deal with this problem, it had been useful to identify appropriate
17
methods to redevelop the areas surrounding historical buildings and public places, thus re-thinking the concept of “connection between architecture and background. The aim of this course was to make a major change in the common perspective and stop considering villas as something to protect; instead, historical buildings might be taken as models to renovate the surrounding areas. On the basis of many on site surveys and of a deep analysis, the realized project focused on the issue of the increasingly disorganized drivability in town centers:
A
01
nowadays very small room is left to pedestrians and cyclists, with the result that fewer and fewer people usually frequent squares in front of villas thus hampering their promotion. A final proposition was made to divert the major part of the traffic out of villas and the squares in front of them, thus avoiding noise and pollution in favor of an increased availability of these historical places to the locals. The architectural project of a new multifunctional building with offices and cafes and a new adjacent theatre was thought as a possibility to reestablish the functional importance of Piazza Andrea

Palladio. This latter, together with Villa Cornaro and its itinerary museum constitute a network of cultural activities which had been lacking in Piombino Dese for too long.

THE RESTORATION OF CA’ RISORTA The rural house is, in general, made up of a residential part, a rustic one used for agricultural activities, supplemented by auxiliary buildings, if needed. The relationship between rural houses and the surrounding cultivated land, as well as the size and disposition of their main constitutive elements, represent a specific reflection of the land ownership and management system. Sile river bank towards Caposile with its necessarily paved road is a clear evidence of how the river is higher than the countryside
31
plan. The land which can be seen on the left is the typical boundless and monotonous reclaimed one, only interrupted by few houses built up around the little church of Trezze and then by the long row of semidetached mainly uninhabited discoloured yellow houses accompanying us for kilometres with their obvious signs of degradation. Resembling the abandonment of these houses, the state of degradation and disaster struck inexorably the whole area, making it dangerous and inaccessible. Therefore, the purpose of the academic course
A
02
was a deep meditation on the relationship between “ancient” and “new” in architecture: the will to preserve pre-existent buildings along with the reaffirmation of the creative and precious value of contemporary intervention is interpolated with the fate of the buildings inherited from the past. “Addition”, “integration”, “sedimentation”, “coexistence”, “relationships” are some of the terms on which the students were made reflect, focusing on the reasons and meanings underlying the concept of restoration. Particular attention was paid to the
PHOTOPLAN
methodical approach in the preservation of materials and architectonical surfaces as well as in the development of executive plans to create links between “ancient” parts and “new” ones. The case here presented is the one of the rural edifice of Ca ‘Risorta.

Early 1500
The work of the previous century for deviation of the Brenta river, which was considered to be the principal responsible for the lagoon interception, continues to move southward. At the same time, the arrangement of lagoon docks is being started up.
The Brenta river deviation project is completed with the settlement of the previous west arm intervention. The works for reclamation and containment of the Piave river banks begin.

The Santo Spirito canal excavation begins on the project of Cristoforo Sabbadino to facilitate the transit of commercial vessels, completed only in 1726.
The “cut of the Sile is prepared to divert it in the old Piave riverbed, which has been dismantled following the previous reclamation.

The defense system of the coasts are prepared to fight against the progressive erosion of the lagoon with the construction of the “murazzi” in Istrian stone.
Following the previous works of reclamation and digging of the canals, including the conclusion of the Santo Spirito’s one this year, some rural houses are being built along the “cut of the Sile”.

1900
Significant interventions are carried out to enhance the port function of Venice and to enable it to be used more commercially.
Across the Venetian lagoon, especially in the northern and southern parts, large fishing and farm spaces are set up for community use and for commercial purposes.

THE E.N.I.VILLAGE IN BORCA DI CADORE Gellner’s most ambitious work was the village in Corte di Cadore, designed for the president of E.N.I. Enrico Mattei, an enlightened and ambitious customer who wanted a tourist centre for his employees. After the first inspections in 1954, Gellner chose the site at the foot of Mount Antelao, a mostly dry and pebbly area characterized by arid and stunted vegetation, apparently inhospitable for its lack of water but with a magnificent view of the valley and a rich natural environment.
57
Following the results of preliminary analysis of the organization of the projected village, the observation of clear principles emerged as a convenient way to proceed: centralising public services, administrative offices, leisure facilities and various shops with the aim of creating a social centre was assumed as the right direction to follow. Different groups of houses were planned all around the village, clearly separated by lines of greenery. The Social Centre was conceived in 1959 with the adjacent Service Facility and the Hotel, representing altogether the centrepiece of Gellner’s work, ending
A
03
up as four squares located at different altitudes and linked together by pedestrian ramps. The area intended for the village is located far away from the ancient village of Borca where, as it happens in other parts of the valley, the typical mountain architecture dominates with its two-lined roofs and abundant wooden structures. A sense of freedom from all formal constraints and the consequent possibility of ignoring any reference to the rustic mountain architecture is the remarkable characteristic of the new village. After the acquisition of these
PHOTOPLAN
notions, the academic course required redrawing one of the villas previously projected by Gellner proposing some modifications to improve comfort and usability, while maintaining a careful and critical view of the urban context and the techniques implemented by the architect.

THE EXCHANGE TERMINAL IN PORTO MARGHERA The project area is located in the northern macro-island of Porto Marghera, a semiabandoned area without any kind of infrastructure connections with the neighbouring areas: San Giuliano Park in the north, the development areas of V.E.G.A. in the west, the E.N.I. area in the south and the infrastructural spaces in the east. In order to resolve the lack of direct access from the north, it was decided to add two connectors for the tram, thus completing the existing link between the town of Mestre
75
and the island of Venice, and making the route fluent exclusively for tired vehicles. Successively, the urban and architectural developments of the project were thought in light of the expansion of the whole system of V.E.G.A., letting it include three adjacent lots thus implementing soil usability through the division of the area into three parts. The first one, in the east, includes the infrastructural functions with the project of a large building intended for Porto Marghera tram terminal. This latter is located along the existing road, near a multi-storey car park that guarantees a wider
A
04
scope to Piazzale Roma, now abused by the always increasing number of daily commuters coming to Venice autonomously. The second, in the west, includes the productive part of the project, where the Headquarters and researchdevelopment laboratories are interlaced with the development area of V.E.G.A. The third zone, the central one, includes a covered square where different shops and small restaurants are meant to combine the different souls of the area. All together these are placed under a large concrete tensile structure which - besides giving the square a roof

MARGHERA - THE LAND ARSENAL The site considered for the thesis’ project is delimited to the north by San Giuliano junction, to the east by native vegetation and fishing ground, to the south by E.N.I. area and to the west by the VEGA. Although this site, which is stated as a transformable area by the P.A.T. (Piano di Assetto Territoriale, i.e. urban development plan), could play a key role in traffic distribution, it is actually a broad expanse of spontaneous vegetation. Solving the road problem was therefore the starting point
99
to allow usability of the site. Modifying only the nodes considered problematic by years of preliminary but never executed projects was the solution. It was decided to make a clear distinction between rubber and rail traffic, leaving the former to the existing road ring, transformed into a one-way road, and elevating the latter, making use of pre-existent connections. According to the information in P.A.T, it was decided to place the new Interchange Terminal for the City of Venice perpendicular to the two raised ways, passing through the area, in order to keep the ground free from
B
01
the transit of heavy vehicles. The left side, because of its proximity to the existing ringroad, became the access way to the project area. A large multifunctional centre connects the two souls of the project, coordinating everything through the means of a large Concrete tensile structure which encloses a portion of the highway. In regard of the southern part of E.N.I., the presence of very large tanks for the preservation of crude oil and the wild vegetation contribute to deteriorate the image of the site. Furthermore, the company does not have a management centre in this
PHOTOPLAN
area As a consequence, the four projected buildings and their background, represent a sensible improvement for the business and for the entire area, as well.

MARGHERA - THE LAND ARSENAL The Venetian Arsenal has long been the site of the city’s businesses, technical knowledge and its transmission, production and its innovation, to the limits of the contermporary, but also a place of great architectures, of large open spaces, of arrangements of different useful buildings, ordered by a general project in which the city and the place have always played a major role. These are the main characteristics of this renovation project involving Marghera’s oldest industrial area that we named “The
133
Land Arsenal: a place of innovation, production, knowledge and creation, which should play a crucial role in the port reappropriation by the city. The issue of the obsolete areas of Porto Marghera near the city of Venice, which have long been identified as urban transformation areas and should be given back to the city, can’t be attributed only to the re-organization of abandoned areas, but involves a bigger project bringing the whole urban area to be true part of the city. In this view, the entire project might be seen as a unique opportunity to renovate and requalify dismissed, but
C
01
valuable industrial areas. Masterplan is the only methodological approach applicable to a coherent project of urban renewal of a city. When major transformations are needed in a large and complex area, as in the case of the abandoned productive core of Marghera where the dimension of the area is almost 100 hectares, Masterplan indicates the only guide line possible. The dimensions of the project area, placed in a strategic node of the urban network connecting the lagoon with the dry land, are nothing less than gigantic and represent the background for

the development of a truly interconnected as well as individually articulate plan.

MARGHERA - L’ARSENALE DI TERRA STUDI E PROGETTI PER IL POLO MARITTIMOINDUSTRIALE DEL VENETO “The summer of 1917 is the date conventionally assumed as the beginning of the project “New Port of Marghera” that Eng. Coen-Cagli had prepared once nominated by “Union of Metallurgical Naval Architects for the development of Porto Marghera” previously set up at the beginning of the same year. which had been conducted in the city during the late nineteenth century and consequently consolidated before the war in important and timely contributions involving almost all the politic, economical and professional forces of the city, each of whom had their personal vision to develop the port of Venice. [...] The echo of those times has not yet been turned off and some of those themes have recently drawn general attention, especially in light of the complex issue regarding the fate of Venice Port in the future, when different harbour hubs and industrial infrastructures will

be needed. [...] Neither the project of the upland port proposed by the Port Authority nor the supplementary infrastructures on the land and on the see intended for fastening and modernizing the goods transfer or the foreseen methodologies to implement these changes should come as a surprise. [...] This report on the current state of Porto Marghera, with its insights into economical, environmental and infrastructural scenarios and our own integrated project for the whole area must be seen as an original contribute to the Land Arsenal and as a European reference in this

THE YOUNG PAVILION Nowadays, more and more teenagers plan to move abroad for work and the number of old people is increasing. Taking these tremendously important issues into account, the objective of the project outlines a new building with exhibition complexes and self promotion rooms supporting job opportunities for young people. Even if the space is limited, it is well organized with a rational approach referring to the desirable simplicity in entering job world, in sharp contrast to the frantic society to which we are all getting
153
used. The pre-existent Liberty villas, which might become a resource once restored, will mingle with the new projected building thus generating a relaxing and ecological urban park, with astonishing views of Piovego river and the surrounding lawns full of bushes and trees. The large porch connecting the new exhibitory building and these villas represents a superb renovation of the currently wrecked faรงade. The interior spaces of the new building feature a large meeting room providing access to two exhibition areas: the red

pavilion, at the ground floor and the blue one, which is composed of two levels and an independent internal staircase affording a panoramic view of the park between them. Above the red pavilion there is a terrace for outdoor events, partly covered and partially uncovered. The urban park, on the other hand, is planned as a large central open green space surrounded by tree-lined areas, each one connected with the others thus generating a more unified and unbundled effect. Few large ways demarcate the boundaries of green areas with bushes and flowers.

The main aim of the architectural and urban redevelopment of the old Ospedale a Mare in Lido di Venezia is to bring to a new life this part of the city that has been a medical and cultural centre for more than fifty years. This was used as a rehabilitation centre for children and elderly people suffering from respiratory disorders such as tuberculosis or bronchitis by thalassotherapy, which consisted in treating patients with extended exposure to sun, sea and sand. project area only to part of the hospital complex allows people to continue to visit the hospital during the restoration, as a city within the city. Even if the health-care function of the entire hospital complex is irreparable, the socio-cultural one has remained alive until now, mainly thanks to the activity of the Officina Marinoni Association, which has always been the biggest promoter of the whole restoration program for the area. Thus, this project aims to revitalize a dying system through the art and the organization of a cultural

centre not only for Venetian artists, but also for the Italian ones. By a multimedia wall that can be used for exhibitions or social activities, the side of the complex in front of the preexisting urban area will be isolated and protected at the same time, while the other one will continue into the wild nature passing through a filter zone. The outlining of new functions was decided section by section: the southern building serves both as bathing establishment and information point for various activities; three monoliths in row are used as project management

TAKING / PART TRANSFORMATIVE PRACTICES IN THE CITY
SCENARIOS FOR THE QUARTER LAGHETTO_VICENZA
Workshop and Exhibition 2011
The context of the project brings together numerous suggestions that make the plot of the territory extremely dense and complex to analyse and understand, where issues of social disease are combined with a large military area, characteristics of recognized environmental quality facing the need of expanding part of the city in this direction to meet the demand for housing and services. All these characteristics cohabit together in one of the most dynamic and

responsive cities in the north-east of Italy, where the economic and cultural heritage consolidated over the years, despite the contradictions, has been able to provide wealth and prosperity to the people. The investigation of possible solutions to the stated problems initially concerned how observations could be developed to make the place provided by multiple readings, born from a collective and stratified experience as well as the same purpose for the project. For this reason, a series of site-observations of the Laghetto Quarter were made to build a site knowledge

that was capable to keep together multi-aspects of social, economic and informal networks, future potentialities for the area, memory and imagination. A set of personal and collective relationships with the project area was observed, documented and constructed as the first set of project tools. Subsequently, the planning method was structured on a transformational approach, in which coming into contact with all those involved in the urban design process, planning and organizing activities, proposals and interventions in a progressive way.

A sort of interactive square was created to exchange suggestions and ideas into a real urban development program, built with real actors involved in the process. Following the positive results gained at the IUAV University of Venice, the workshop teachers, Sheffield University Research Group Agency and the Fram_menti group, along with selected participants, have designed, created and set up the exhibition “ Taking Part - Scenari per il quartiere Laghetto_Vicenza “ took place in the AB23 exhibition space in Vicenza.
