ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO Selected Projects 2012-2020
ENRIQUE LÓPEZ OROPEZA Master of Science in Architectural Design
Hola! Thank you for stopping
by to check my portfolio of projects. I’m a master graduate architect from Politecnico di Milano. Currently I’m looking for a position in a studio that allows me work with a variety of techniques and with a passionate team that looks to move forward in the practice of architecture. I’m hardworking and passionate in every project I involved with. I also appreciate working in team as I’ve found is the best way to share knowledge and ideas. I’ve been involved in a great number of study trips and workshops where I’ve had the privilege of been under the tutelage of incredibly skilled and knowledgeable professors that have helped me to gain proper sense of criticism and perspective in the design process.
I’ve chosen selected projects that I believe show my skill in every level of architectural design, ranging from interior all the way to urban. As showed in my Work Experience section, you’ll notice that I have been able to practice in diverse studios and offices that have given me a sense of reality and purpose as an architect. I strongly suggest to review my Personal Works since it presents other practices that in my opinion are linked directly with the profession. There you’ll see some of the films, publications and drawings that I’ve worked on during this past years. I hope you enjoy the projects I’m incluiding in this portfolio. If you need more info about any of them don’t hesitate to contact me as I’m looking forward to hear from you.

URBAN FACTORY A Rethinking of Monterrey’s Industrial Downtown
Tecnológico de Monterrey - 2012 Competition-Finalist project 28
URBAN FACTORY Top 5 Finalist Project Monterrey, Mexico.
Monterrey is a city that thrives by its industry, a characteristic that dates back to almost 100 years ago. It’s a city that after its colonial and traditional style of architecture turned towards the american suburb and began to expand in area tremendously. Consequently, the city center began to be less and less attractive to investors and even the government which is gradually it decayed into one of the most insecure areas in the city. To this, it’s also important to remark that the Monterrey is the city with the most number of cars per person in latinamerica which complicates even more the mobility to any area of the city. An open competition was open in Monterrey by the National Architecture Academy in order to reorganize the way its downtown works. This competition was open to every university in town with the purpose of brainstorming in the subject of how to solve this problem which has also replicated in other zones of not only the metropolitan area but also other cities in the country. The project was developed and explained in a series of points that could help to organically both understand the problem and take it as a natural starting point for the improvement of such historical site.
TOP: Historical photographs MIDDLE: Proposed volumetry BOTTOM: Current site moodboard
5
1. Localization and connection The first step is to began the study of not only Monterrey but also its whole metropolitan area in order to find out nodes that exist but also those that could be developed in the future; as well as the lines used for transport and connection.
2. Distances and methods The next step was to approach closer to the actual site but first to focus on different layers of distances. The time and experience required by bus, bicycle and walking are quite different between them however that doesn’t mean they can’t complement each other.
6
URBAN FACTORY Top 5 Finalist Project Monterrey, Mexico.
3. Forgotten buildings As this is such a historical site, there’s a great number of buildings with great historical significance yet for some of the reasons listed above it fell into decadence. Those were listed and identified in order to protect them.
4. Statistics Research led to some hard data bout the existing site that helped to understand the characteristics and needs of the users in the site.
5. Industries & Factories As mentioned before, Monterrey is an industrial city. And this site includes some of the oldest factories that at some point used to be the thriving force of its society. Even more than the rest of the historical buildings, these factories are the heart of the area and therefore the project.
7
Master Plan The project takes advantage of the square blocks that is so predominant in the site and uses it as an opportunity for playing against the typical expectations one might encounter with such regularity. Open spaces, change in density and green corridors become the main characteristics that define the new area.
Those building in a darker shade of blue represent the increase in density and height. Most of the increase can be seen in the constructions near the main streets as a way to also incorporate commerce in the ground floor and living in the rest so that there’s movement at any time in the day.
The circles mark the industries and factories that as they used to work before are now the heart that define where to put certain uses. The main open and green areas for example can now be found as an extension to the industries and work as a backyard of different activities.
The new distribution of users and transportation per street is found in the sections where the priority is given to pedestrians and bicycles. With the increased height of some buildings now it’s also possible to notice how the elevated metro line is no longer as prominent.

A SYMPHONY OF SPACES The transition of an old theater to an open, public space.
Politecnico di Milano - 2016 Prof. Arch. Ing. Cristina Palini
12
A SYMPHONY OF SPACES Como lake. Italy.
Como is one of the main tourism cities in the north of Italy. Right in the heart of the city there’s an abandoned neoclassical theater with a most interesting history just as the city where it’s located itself. Politeama started as a classical opera theater since it was built at the beginning of the XX century. It worked fine by a couple of decades however another theater in Como, the Teatro Sociale gradually became the official gathering place for the arts so Politeama had to reconsider its original purpose. In order to still survive it changed it’s main function to that of a film theater with occasional plays and operas though in a much smaller scale than when it opened its doors. It was until the first years of this century when it officially closed and it has not been used since. Tourism however has been increasing every decade and the value of every building and land here is treasured. In that, and in many other senses, it’s a shame that such a building and in such location has no purpose. That’s where this master degree project comes in and the idea is given to turn it into something that works in many levels: a community center.
13
TOP: Manifesto (Link to booklet) MIDDLE: Site analysis BOTTOM: Section model
“Bringing down walls is a moto used for this project in the sense that the experiment was made about what happens once the spaces are opened. A community center should have a wide variety of options as to what kind of activities can be performed in it. So, the plaza in front of the existing building is taken as a reference of why open spaces can keep working and hosting people as to the existing building which is completely closed to anyone. The main concept lies in having a sequence of semi-open spaces, each one with different height, materials and therefore functions to be hosted in them. The heart of this plazas is the one where the main seating hall used to be but now the seats are optional so that they do not interfere with whatever the users use it for. The first encounter with an open space from the original facade is that of the plaza in front of it though now the flooring is treated so that they both become part of the same. The last plaza is a double court with two different levels hosts two different functions. The ground level one is meant to be used by the school users in the first levels. The high ground one though is part of the art gallery existing in that floor.
14
A SYMPHONY OF SPACES Como lake. Italy.
Here a vertical block of transportation is found twice each one with stairs and elevator. The stairs count with a very special way of experience them since you can literally see through them since they are made out of opaque glass.
23
Called the climax not only because of its existing qualities but also because is from here that the first communication and contact with the new area is made. Now the previous stage is being literally brought down and being accessible to people.
A hug void is designed right in the middle of the courtyard in a sense remembering buildings as the Pantheon or the climax of this building itself where the importance of natural light is regarded as essential.

The most striking new part of the project is that of the new volume in the back of the building . It’s purpose is to help the theater no longer having the treatment of a back and a front. This new part is where the materials and the form are meant to contrast with the existing building. This new face has a direct relation with the original language of the building though. For its design the visual vertical proportion was taken as a starting point and from there an experimentation excercise was made in order to slim it down and give a sensation of lightness.

CHURRASCARIA GRILL HOUSE Interior design of a restaurant in Rio de janeiro
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - 2017 Prof. Arch. Marina Lage
24
CHURRASCARIA GRILL HOUSE Interior Design of a Restaurant
The project consist in taking an existing building in the bohemian heart of Rio de Janeiro and propose an upper class grill house restaurant that is not easily found in the area. The only limitations reside in those presented in the Brazilian rules for restoration which look to protect the heritage of historical constructions. The main proposed concept for the interior design lies in having a main wall that separates the public from the services, Using it both as a decorative and a structural element. A correlation with a tree is made with its symbolic and formal characteristics: a heavy base that grows both vertically and horizontally. Therefore the main material chosen is wood, combined with neutral colored-concrete and painting in order to not loose focus of what’s important. Another source of inspiration is that of a library in the sense of the cathedral-like qualities that can invoke in several examples where the furniture showing and storing the books create a sense of verticality and warmness. In that way, this project also plays with the question “where does architecture ends and industrial design begins and viceversa?

BOUTIQUE AVRIL Montparnasse Interior and furniture design for a store in on of the busiest spots in Paris.
This project needed to follow strict rules about the feeling and brand identity of Avril, a high end cosmetic company in Paris. With other stores in diverse areas of the city it was encharged to design the new one in Montparnasse station, one of the busiest spots in town. The project consists in the interior design and arrangement of furniture as well as the detailed design of them. The main concept lies in the contrast between materials bringing out the delicate aspects of them. The store can be visited in Gare Montparnasse, 17 Boulevard de Vaugirard Level - 1

ARKOSE Pont de Sèvres Interior and furniture design for an indoor climbing sport complex.
Arkose is an indoor climbing company a great number of complexes throughout France. With a new opening in one of Paris neighboord cities, Boulogne Billancourt, there was a need of proposing a new concept. Excluding the climbing areas, the task was to propose the specific interior design of the bar, restaurant, store, chill area and dressing rooms. The main concept was to use a moodboard based on the aesthetics of Wes Anderson films, specifically “Moonrise Kingdom”.

HOSTARIA URBANA Interior and furniture design of a Tapas Bar in the heart of Paris.
This tapas restaurant and bar is a project that took around 2 months since its inception to the beginning of the work in site. It was a refurbishment project of the exact same function. The client always had a main idea of what he wanted the place to exude so I worked in a wide range of diverse options of materiality and arrangements in order to find the design that fitted best to the client’s needs. Besides working on the interior I also designed some of the furniture details such as the decorative elements in the wall and the racks used in bar. You can currently visit Hosteria Urbana in the heart of the 12 district of Paris at 11 Rue d’Antoine Vollon. In Collaboration with Duccio Cardelli @ AND Studio

12 RUE CHARLES DE GAULLE, ALFORTVILLE A parisian building with34 Apartments and a commercial space.
The typical parisian building comes with its own rules that need to be respected. These rules were used not as an obstacle but rather as a starting point of the design of this 34 apartments building in Alfortville, a neighbor town of Paris. Starting from a sketch, an experimentation began with the different arrangements of bricks and the materials that can complement them. Black metal was used throughout the balconies, joints, roofing and base. But not all of is shades of dark, for a colourful Portuguese type of tiles is used as a surprise material for the flooring of each balcony that only the residents can experience. The final result is a design that manages to break the conventions of parisian buildings and pushing forward the experimentation that comes just from the materials.

BOIS D’ARCY APARTMENTS Countryside living outside Paris
This was one of those rare opportunities where you’re lucky enough to have a client that enjoys having playfulness be visible in architecture. The location is in the small town of Bois D’Arcy right next to Versailles. The design began taking the typical forms of countryside apartment buildings and putting a twist on them mainly through the choice of materials. A light shade of blush pink was chosen for the exterior concrete facades while having a contrasting dark stone and tiles for both the base and the roofing respectively. Such contrast is harmonized with the sleek carved through window openings and the wood in them that helps the composition as a whole to stand out from the monotony of this typology of buildings.

BARILLA’S PAVILLION A tale of two plazas
An international open competition was carried out where the main goal was to take a site in Barilla’s main headquarters in Parma, Italy, and propose a building that would be open to public so that the company’s ideals and work can be shared with the community. Personally, I cannot separate the concept of a public square or plaza with italian culture. It’s as much part of their identity as their cuisine. So the plaza was taken as both the starting and main concept for this proposal. If you visit Rome for example, you can see firsthand how every open space is different from the next. Even if there are hundreds of them, every square or plaza has its own identity. With these ideas in mind the protagonists of the project are two plazas with great differences and purposes between them. While one plaza is open and perfect for weekend markets and open air exhibitions, the other one is covered by a solar receptor and green roof structure that joins the diverse volumes under it while still allowing light to come in throughout the day. WATER & EARTH MUSEUMS Concepts for Beijing’s South Axis
A competition was carried out for an ambitious urban revitalisation project on Beijing south axis that connects the new development projects to come such as a new airport with China’s Zhaoxian Temple. Working in collaboration with — we developed an urban strategy that could work with China’s request of having a more impressive and ceremonious feeling passing through the main avenue. An axis where you can experience the culture and influence of China in the XXI century economics and politics. It was requested to go beyond an urban level detail and even propose the architecture that will be found in key points in the new masterplan. I was in charge of the design of the Water and Earth museums, with the idea that each will reflect its content and the relation these elements have with China’s ancestral culture.

URSUS & FAFNIR Projecting concepts
Atelier Forte goes well beyond more than just an architecture lead studio. The project made here combine sculpture, construction, painting and even philosophy. I was recruited for a specific role based on my experience which is to aid in the conceptual representation through an audiovisual manner. Ursus is basically a room in the “Stanze” exposition found in Triennale di Milano during 2016. However, there was so much input in the thinking and design of the final product and that’s where I got in. I was asked to develop a narrative in the form of a screenplay that could work in a video which could after the exposition is over, be shown as a way to explain the studio’s ideology. Fafnir is a project that was already completed and developed by the time I came to the studio. However there was a project that needed to be moved to a new site in the countryside near Rome. During the installation that lasted 4 days I was able to film the relation between the sculpture and the site as well as its construction. At the end, a conceptual video was produced that encompasses the feeling that the project gives when encountered.

CASA A+E DESIGN Design and modeling of a private house
I had a wide range of activities in “Alejandro Miyar arquitectos”. From conceptual design and research to construction supervision, my main purpose there however was to assist on the architectural level of detail in floor plans and 3D modeling. The studio had an inclination towards private clients, usually upper class in Monterrey. As such a series of private houses were asked to be designed. I worked mainly in “Casa A+E”. And even though some conceptual and spatial work had been completed I was able to develop the main facade and the detailing of the floor plans. Also, the choosing of materials was a key stage for both the working studio and the client. Different proposals for the feeling of the interior were delivered until an agreement was made between both parties. As of 2014 the house was about to start its construction near the Sierra Madre mountains in the suburb area of Monterrey.

DESIGNING LABS Project design and managment of laboratories across the country
During 1 year I worked in a private company where the main challenge was to deliver practical, analitical and creative solutions for chemists and scientists all across the country. I worked with a team of people from different fields of profesional practice in order to achieve the kind of projects which are not usually taught in architecture school in a limited concept stage time.

A particular design can be visited in the heart of Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico. Where the steel museum asked to rethink a space they had in their main building and turn it in a interactive and learning space for youngsters and thus wake up their interest in the sciences.

The work lead to different trips and direct contact with clients which helped me to understand clearly the project’s needs. A contact with the main furniture manufacturer in North Carolina was also important since I was able to understand the structural composition of my main design tool. Such projects also needed to met certain criteria that goes well beyond the typical living or commercial certifications.
EPHEMERAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Concepts and construction of structures for a music festival
Coming up with structures that define the spaces in a music festival sounds simple. However when the main requirement is to make such structures easy to transport through different cities then the challenge increases enormously. Even though this was the first musical festival of its kind in Mexico, it was no small task since international recognized artists were taking part in it. During the time in this private studio the great gift was the openness to experiment and work directly in the structures as well of course designing them. Therefore every new idea had to pass through a physical experimentation period. A great number of ideas where presented but in the end only those who had the characteristics of easy transportation were chosen. A food court area, bar, photo opportunity and charging stations where the main need, the link in each of them: the interaction between metal structure and fabric as well as the use of artificial light.

“Revelaciones + Alternativas” is both a printed publication and a documentary short film that showcases the problems that come with having an hermetic and closed urban posture towards the area where an important university campus develops. The book became a collaboration between more than 30 persons, whereas the film had a much smaller crew that had the job to do research and interviews for the users of the study location. Film and architecture and the evolution of the latter are linked in so many ways. This essay goes deep into the first 50 years of film and shows the manner that film directors and therefore society in general feels towards the new style which is modernism. A film compilation was produced where we travel through the decades and witness the evolution of what I like to call “communion” between both practices.

As a side project I’ve had the privilege of writing films reviews that are posted in sites such as One Paragraph Review. The challenge of this particular site is that, as the name suggests, the main rule consists of writing all of my feelings and critiques towards the films in just one paragraph. The most ambitious of my film projects so far is that of “Walk N’ Roll (Pequeño Peatón Imprudente)”. This is a long subject film that lasts 76 minutes and touches a great variety of subjects. Linking the actual mexican culture of giving such a worship towards the car with historical facts, public opinions and sociopolitical tendencies. The final film has had exhibition in festival in different countries and has acquired several awards.
During my bachelor’s studies I was given the oportunity to collaborate in a design and architecture magazine. My contribution consisted in developing a column with a subject that I consider was relevant to comunicate which in this case I went towards recommendations of films that had in them exciting and important pieces of architecture.
