WHERE IS HE?

Production design in preproduction of sets and miniatures

For this project, the director’s vision contemplated using miniature work for using as set extensions during alongside the photography department as well as in postproduction with the visual effects department for specific challenging sequences. The story demanded to focus mainly in the design of two houses. The first a highly detailed XIX century highclass house. This one turned out to be the more challenging in great part to the high level of detail to be represented in the physical model. The second is a countryside cottage house of a humble family during the XVII century.

FAFNIR & URSUS Projecting concepts

Atelier Forte goes well beyond more than just an architecture lead studio. The project made here combine sculpture, construction, painting and even philosophy. I was recruited for a specific role based on my experience which is to aid in the conceptual representation through an audiovisual manner. Ursus is basically a room in the “Stanze” exposition found in Triennale di Milano during 2016. However, there was so much input in the thinking and design of the final product and that’s where I got in. I was asked to develop a narrative in the form of a screenplay that could work in a video which could after the exposition is over, be shown as a way to explain the studio’s ideology. Fafnir is a project that was already completed and developed by the time I came to the studio. However there was a project that needed to be moved to a new site in the countryside near Rome. During the installation that lasted 4 days I was able to film the relation between the sculpture and the site as well as its construction. At the end, a conceptual video was produced that encompasses the feeling that the project gives when encountered.

HOSTARIA URBANA Interior and furniture design of a Tapas Bar in the heart of Paris.

This tapas restaurant and bar is a project that took around 2 months since its inception to the beginning of the work in site. It was a refurbishment project of the exact same function. The client always had a main idea of what he wanted the place to exude so I worked in a wide range of diverse options of materiality and arrangements in order to find the design that fitted best to the client’s needs. Besides working on the interior I also designed some of the furniture details such as the decorative elements in the wall and the racks used in bar. You can currently visit Hosteria Urbana in the heart of Paris at 11 Rue d’Antoine Vollon.

EPHEMERAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Concepts and construction of structures for a music festival

Coming up with structures that define the spaces in a music festival sounds simple. However when the main requirement is to make such structures easy to transport through different cities then the challenge increases enormously. Even though this was the first musical festival of its kind in Mexico, it was no small task since international recognized artists were taking part in it. During the time in this private studio the great gift was the openness to experiment and work directly in the structures as well of course designing them. Therefore every new idea had to pass through a physical experimentation period. A great number of ideas where presented but in the end only those who had the characteristics of easy transportation were chosen. A food court area, bar, photo opportunity and charging stations where the main need, the link in each of them: the interaction between metal structure and fabric as well as the use of artificial light.

CASA A+E DESIGN Design and modeling of a private house

I had a wide range of activities in “Alejandro Miyar arquitectos”. From conceptual design and research to construction supervision, my main purpose there however was to assist on the architectural level of detail in floor plans and 3D modeling. The studio had an inclination towards private clients, usually upper class in Monterrey. As such a series of private houses were asked to be designed. I worked mainly in “Casa A+E”. And even though some conceptual and spatial work had been completed I was able to develop the main facade and the detailing of the floor plans. Also, the choosing of materials was a key stage for both the working studio and the client. Different proposals for the feeling of the interior were delivered until an agreement was made between both parties. As of 2014 the house was about to start its construction near the Sierra Madre mountains in the suburb area of Monterrey.

WATER & EARTH MUSEUMS Concepts for Beijing’s South Axis

A competition was carried out for an ambitious urban revitalisation project on Beijing south axis that connects the new development projects to come such as a new airport with China’s Zhaoxian Temple. Working in collaboration with — we developed an urban strategy that could work with China’s request of having a more impressive and ceremonious feeling passing through the main avenue. An axis where you can experience the culture and influence of China in the XXI century economics and politics. It was requested to go beyond an urban level detail and even propose the architecture that will be found in key points in the new masterplan. I was in charge of the design of the Water and Earth museums, with the idea that each will reflect its content and the relation these elements have with China’s ancestral culture.

“Revelaciones + Alternativas” is both a printed publication and a documentary short film that showcases the problems that come with having an hermetic and closed urban posture towards the area where an important university campus develops. The book became a collaboration between more than 30 persons, whereas the film had a much smaller crew that had the job to do research and interviews for the users of the study location. Film and architecture and the evolution of the latter are linked in so many ways. This essay goes deep into the first 50 years of film and shows the manner that film directors and therefore society in general feels towards the new style which is modernism. A film compilation was produced where we travel through the decades and witness the evolution of what I like to call “communion” between both practices.

As a side project I’ve had the privilege of writing films reviews that are posted in sites such as One Paragraph Review. The challenge of this particular site is that, as the name suggests, the main rule consists of writing all of my feelings and critiques towards the films in just one paragraph. The most ambitious of my film projects so far is that of “Walk N’ Roll (Pequeño Peatón Imprudente)”. This is a long subject film that lasts 76 minutes and touches a great variety of subjects. Linking the actual mexican culture of giving such a worship towards the car with historical facts, public opinions and sociopolitical tendencies. The final film has had exhibition in festival in different countries and has acquired several awards.

During my bachelor’s studies I was given the oportunity to collaborate in a design and architecture magazine. My contribution consisted in developing a column with a subject that I consider was relevant to comunicate which in this case I went towards recommendations of films that had in them exciting and important pieces of architecture.

CHURRASCARIA GRILL HOUSE Interior Design of a Restaurant

The project consits in taking an existing building in the bohemian heart of Rio de Janeiro and propose an upper class grill house resutaurant that is not easily found in the area. The only limitations reside in those presented in the Brazilian rules for restauration which look to protect the heritage of historial constructions. The main proposed concept for the interior design lies in having a main wall that separates the public from the services, Using it both as a decorative and a structural element. A correlation with a tree is made with its symbolic and formal characteristics: a heavy base that grows both vertically and horizontally. Therefore the main material chosen is wood, combined with neutral colored-concrete and painting in order to not loose focus of what’s important. Another source of inspiration is that of a library in the sense of the cathedral-like qualities that can invoke in several examples where the furniture showing and storing the books create a sense of verticality and warmness. In that way, this project also plays with the question “where does architecture ends and industrial design begins and viceversa?”

A SYMPHONY OF SPACES PERSONAL INFORMATION

The transition of an old theater to an open, public space.

A SYMPHONY OF SPACES Como lake. Italy.

Como is one of the main tourism cities in the north of Italy. Right in the heart of the city there’s an abandoned neoclassical theater with a most interesting history just as the city where it’s located itself. Politeama started as a classical opera theater since it was built at the begining of the XX century. It worked fine by a couple of decades however another theater in Como, the Teatro Sociale gradually became the official gathering place for the arts so Politeama had to reconsider its original purpose.

A SYMPHONY OF SPACES Como lake. Italy.

In order to still survive it changed it’s main funtion to that of a film theater with occasional plays and operas though in a much smaller scale than when it opened its doors. It was until the first years of this century when it officially closed and it has not been used since. Tourism however has been increasing every decade and the value of every building and land here is treasured. In that, and in many other senses, it’s a shame that such a building and in such location has no purpose. That’s where this master degree project comes in and the idea is given to turn it into something that works in many levels: a community center.

Here a vertical block of transportation is found twice each one with stairs and elevator. The stairs count with a very special way of experience them since you can literally see through them since they are made out of opaque glass.

Called the climax not only because of its existing qualities but also because is from here that the first communication and contact with the new area is made. Now the previous stage is being literally brought down and being accessible to people.

A vast void is designed right in the middle of the courtyard in a sense remembering buildings as the Pantheon or the climax of this building itself where the importance of natural light is regarded as essential.

The most striking new part of the project is that of the new volume in the back of the building . It’s purpose is to help the theater no longer having the treatment of a back and a front. This new part is where the materials and the form are meant to contrast with the existing building. This new face has a direct relation with the original language of the building though. For its design the visual vertical proportion was taken as a starting point and from there an experimentation excercise was made in order to slim it down and give a sensation of lightness.
