Plain packaging regulations, cannabis 2.0, the rise of edibles, CBD-infusion, beer and wine in the works for Ontario’s corner stores, carbon tax stickers, vaping furore, a new national association and divisive elections to name a few: There’s no doubt convenience is at the centre of a number of massive shifts and we will continue to support and inform you about the issues and trends shaping your business. One such trend is the potential for foodservice as a key revenue driver. “The way to consumers’ hearts is through their stomachs” (p. 26) explores why and how operators can get in on the action. Retailer Spotlight (p. 22) zeroes in on Dépanneur Jules, an independent c-store turned foodie destination with some 200 hot and cold favourites made in-house. More than 2,400 stores across the country joined the Convenience Industry Council of Canada to mark National Convenience Week and raise funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada chapters. The goal? $100,000 to grant 10 wishes. The result? $170,000 to fund 17 wishes! Congratulations to all industry participants, as well as the more than 200 politicians and community leaders who took part.

Alberta’s Beaver Hill Shell gas station is the 2019 Canada’s Best Restroom winner, earning it the WINNER! top prize of $2,500 in Cintas products and services. The Beaver Hill restrooms go beyond clean and efficient, featuring luxurious details. According to Cintas: “Granite countertops are subtly complimented with a herringbone pattern on the floor. Echoing the stall doors and the shelves mounted inside, the mirrors are framed in wood to create a modern yet rustic look. A DAY TO CELEBRATE

The Ontario Convenience Stores Association and more than 6,000 of its members were proud to cheer on the 250 local convenience stores that teamed up with politicians and local dignitaries to support children’s healthcare. Twenty-seven MPPs and MPs, as well as countless community members and customers, enjoyed the day’s activities. This year’s event raised funds for several charities, including Children’s Health Foundation, McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation, SickKids Foundation and CHEO Foundation. Proceeds will support the highest priority needs in the hospitals, including critical research, education and the purchase of life-saving equipment. Congratulations to all participants!

Through its U.S.-based subsidiaries, Parkland Fuel Corporation in Calgary acquired Tropic Oil Company, Inc. as well as equity interests and the assets of certain of its affiliates. Tropic Oil is headquartered in Miami and transports, distributes and markets a full range of fuels and lubricants across Florida. “Through Tropic Oil, Parkland is adding its third Regional Operating Centre (ROC) and expanding its presence into the southeastern states for the first time,” said Doug Haugh, president of Parkland USA. “This new Southeast ROC will be the operating platform that drives organic growth and enables further acquisitions across the region, while leveraging our business with Sol (Investments).”

GET READY FOR CBD-INFUSION

Canada legalized cannabis for recreational use in October 2018, however legislation governing next-generation products, including edibles, beverages, vapes and topicals, just came into effect Oct. 17. That means (due to the mandatory 60-day notice companies must provide to Health Canada before selling these products) we can expect CBD-infused products, such as beverages, as well as other cannabis 2.0 products, to hit store shelves starting in mid-December.

BAN THE BAG

Nova Scotia is joining a number of other Canadian provinces to ban most single-use plastic bags at store checkouts—retailers will have one year to prepare before the bags are prohibited. Environment Minister Gordon Wilson says the bill is a signal the province is willing to consider the banning of other plastic items, such as single-use cutlery and straws. While many Canadian municipalities have banned singleuse plastic bags at grocery stores and other retail outlets, provincewide bans are less common and more recent. Manitoba’s government has promised consultations on moving toward a ban of single-use plastic bags. A ban in Prince Edward Island went into effect in July, and Newfoundland and Labrador introduced legislation to ban the bags last April.

MAKE THAT A DOUBLE

As part of the provincial government’s plan to deliver more choice and convenience for consumers when it comes to alcohol, several new LCBO Convenience Outlets are now open in Ontario convenience stores. The provincial government announced in June that the LCBO would authorize approximately 200 LCBO Convenience Outlets by spring 2020—about 150 are to be open by the end of this year. Established in 1962, The LCBO Convenience Outlet program (previously the Agency Store Program) targets communities that do not otherwise have convenient access to an LCBO retail store. At the moment, there are more than 200 outlets across the province. The latest plans will see that number double.

MOVING ON UP B.W. (Brad) Corson is the new chairman, president and CEO of Imperial Oil Limited effective January 1, when he takes over from Rich Kruger, who is retiring. Corson joined Exxon in 1983 in New Orleans, as a project engineer. During his 36-year career with the company, he held a variety of technical, operations, commercial and managerial assignments around the world. In 2009, Corson was appointed vice-president, ExxonMobil Production Company and in 2015, Corson was appointed president, ExxonMobil Upstream Ventures and vice-president of ExxonMobil Corporation. Under his leadership, ExxonMobil made key strategic acquisitions in the Permian Basin, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique and Brazil. Casey Richards is senior vice-president of marketing and innovation at Maple Leaf Foods. In his new role, Richards will oversee marketing and innovation for Maple Leaf’s family of brands “while continuing to oversee the pastry business” he has helped lead since starting with the company in 2017, according to a press release. He will also join the Maple Leaf Foods senior leadership team. Before joining Maple Leaf Foods, Richards held key roles at companies such as General Mills, Nestlé and Conagra.

Jennifer Litterick is the new CEO of Convenience Store News Canada’s parent company EnsembleIQ. Litterick was EnsembleIQ’s chief commercial officer and president, North American retail vertical. She succeeds David Shanker, who had held the role of CEO since February 2018. Litterick joined Rogers Media in 2009 as publisher of Canadian Grocer, later becoming group publisher for Rogers’ marketing and retail titles in 2013. She left the company to be a partner at strategic consulting firm Pinpoint Solutions Group, then returned to B2B media in 2017 with EnsembleIQ, which operates an integrated network of media brands across all retail sectors and leverages its scale to inform, connect and provide actionable marketplace intelligence to help clients achieve growth. Lorna Shankowsky joins ITWAL as director of foodservice where she will be responsible for the overall management and development of ITWAL’s foodservice business, as well as being a contributing member of the senior management team. She will work closely with foodservice suppliers and membersto ensure ITWAL is maximizing its selling, marketing, information and distribution solutions. Shankowsky spent the bulk of her career at Kraft Food Service Division, most recently as director, national distributor development, before becoming director of sales for Canterbury Group.

RAISE THE BAR Less than 2% of bars are purchased at c-stores—it’s time to get in on the snacktion At the end of the 1960s, the top three brewers had a virtual monopoly and produced nearly 95% of the beer sold in Canada. There were more than 40 breweries in the whole country, mostly owned by the Big Three. Market consolidation allowed the big brewers to profit by offering a limited number of generic and indistinct lagers under a small number of brands, including Labatt Blue, Molson Canadian, Molson Golden, Red Cap and Carling Black Label. In the 1980s, large American brewers started investing in Canada with the intent of opening the market to their mega-brands. The 1990s brought the dawn of the microbrew movement, and the number of breweries doubled in short order. By 2019, there were more than 1,000 operational brewing facilities across the country. The share shift has been even more dramatic. The two remaining international conglomerates in the Canadian market are down to less than 60% share and falling. Craft and premium import brews, in a stagnant category, now represent more than 40% share. According to LCBO reporting, craft beer sales grew by almost 18% in 2018.

Consumer evolution How did the ground shift, and how did a dominant oligopoly fail to keep ownership of the market? Consumers responded to new producers offering: · Perceived premium quality · Clean labels highlighting best available ingredients · Large number of different styles and unconventional flavours · Innovative packaging. This is less a history lesson, and more a cautionary tale regarding the challenges of current consumer dynamics. The same key gaps that disrupted the beer market have the potential to impact the convenience channel. According to Technomic’s 2018 Canadian Healthy Eating Foodservice Consumer Trend Report: · 56% of consumers express that they consider foods and/or beverages that have clean label claims as healthier and 22% are willing to pay slightly or significantly more for items that have clean label claims · 27% of consumers are willing to pay slightly or significantly more for items that are high in protein · 33% of consumers report that they consider foods and/or beverages that are gluten-free as healthier. BTW, these sentiments skew decidedly towards millennials: 42% of younger consumers, ages 18-34, agree with this sentiment, versus 29% of older consumers (35+ years old).

Bar-ometer for change In a March 2019 update, Rabobank’s RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness indicated that, despite some pessimism, the food industry remains dynamic and innovative. Interestingly, Rabobank cited the size (US$152-bil-

lion), growth (+7% in 2018) and innovation in the organic/natural food market as the basis of their optimism. Rabobank suggested that “snack bars should become the barometer of the state of the industry and (are) an almost-perfect carrier and platform for today’s (food) trends— ‘when the flow of new bar entrants comes to a halt, it will be time to turn the lights off’ on large natural/organic food shows.” According to Euromonitor International, the Canadian retail energy bar market delivered +2.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) by volume, and +4.5% by dollar sales CAGR between 2013 and 2018. Euromonitor projects that the snack bar market (energy bars and cereal bars, but not including meal replacement/diet bars) segment in the U.S. will grow a further +2.4% CAGR, between 2018-2023, increasing to US$8-billion from $7-billion. The bar market is both large and growing, and the fact that dollar sales are growing significantly faster than volume sales speaks to a consumer appetite for higher margin premium products. Mainstream players are buying in. In the last half of 2019 alone, Hershey spent $500M to acquire health and wellness snack bar manufacturer One Brands and a minority investment in Irish protein snack bar manufacturer Fulfill. In 2017, Kellogg’s spent US$600-million to acquire RXBar, a wildly successful “natural” bar brand that grew from nothing to US$130-million in revenue in five years. Bars are compact, portable, largely shelf-stable, flexible, and suited for impulsive/planned/ healthy/investigative/indulgent snackers (Exhibit 1). There’s a bar for everyone, and bars have the power to draw consumers repeatedly back to your location. In short, they’re worth their weight in gold for convenience operators. CCentral.ca

Protein/energy is where it’s at At the moment, C&G is underdeveloped as a channel where consumers purchase bars. Ipsos’ FIVE consumer tracking service looks at the behaviour, attitudes and motivations of 20,000 Canadian consumers annually. This data confirms that the vast majority of bars are currently being sourced via grocery, Costco and mass merchandisers. Less than 2% of total bars are being purchased at C&G: The potential to tap into these purchases is worthy of your attention. According to Kathy Perrotta, VP, Ipsos: · Eat rate growth in the bars category is being driven by protein/energy bars (+20% since 2017). · Protein/energy bars are as likely to be consumed away-fromhome as at-home, with eat rates spiking both at work and on the go (Exhibit 2). · Protein/energy bars index significantly higher in terms of consumption at convenience and gas. The invitation is there for convenience and gas to add better-for-you protein/energy bar offerings. Look to the data to determine your path to execution. Protein/energy bars have great potential to provide a boost to your sales performance. Retail resolutions As c-store operators it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of running your business. However, the end of the year is a good time to step back, take stock and set goals for the future. Here are 7 easy and attainable relationship-building resolutions you’ll want to keep.

Get social

Developing a social media presence is an effective way to connect with customers and build community. In fact, 70% of Canadians follow at least one brand or company on social media, with 87% of millennials saying they do so, according to the 2019 Canadian Social Media Insights report from Insights West. Their research shows Facebook (59%) is the most dominant space for brand interaction, followed by Instagram at 27%. If you’re an owner/operator licensee, it’s not enough that your parent company has a social media presence. Think local and create your own account to connect with your community or highlight in-store promotions and contests.

Face it

In this digital world, it’s easier to fire off an email than it is to make a phone call or meet face to face. But, there’s no substitute for the real thing. Set aside time—perhaps the first Monday of the month— to meet in person with one of your vendors or business contacts. Your business will benefit. Research reported in

the Harvard Business Review shows face-to-face requests are 34 times more effective than emailed ones—there’s no substitute for good old-fashioned eye contact, a smile and a handshake.

Reduce plastic

Canadians are heavily in favour of a ban on single-use plastics—56% support a total ban on single-use plastics, while 25% somewhat support a ban, according to Nanos Research. In fact, most would be willing to pay a small premium for environmentally sustainable products. Don’t wait for government mandates: Take the lead by offering alternatives to plastic straws, cutlery and stir sticks. And, make sure to communicate to your customers why you’re making these changes.

Those old posters hanging in the store window or around your checkout counter aren’t doing you any favours. Same with the outdated photos and product

information on your website. Don’t wait for spring for a big clean up. New year, new start: Now is a perfect time for a refresh.

Celebrate staff

So much effort goes into keeping customers happy and coming back for more, but what about employees? Rewarding and motivating staff should be a year-round endeavor (if it’s not, now is the time to get started) but after the madness of the holiday season, January is the perfect time for a little staff bonding. A group outing, a meal or even an in-house awards ceremony goes a long way towards making sure the people you rely on to operate your business know how much you value their contributions. Kick off things with a state-of-the-union address by sharing details about your business accomplishments and goals for the coming year. People can only buy into and support your vision when they know what it is.

Give back

Your community supports your business, but how

are you supporting your community? Community engagement lays the foundation for a loyal customer base and it’s a fantastic way to give back and motivate staff— one study shows that employers who “consulted and included” their employees regarding charitable giving saw a 13% increase in employee productivity. Do your research (crowdsource ideas from customers and staff) to connect with a cause, charity or event that will strengthen ties to the community. Employees and customers respect companies that give back.

Reward customers

Loyalty programs help retailers build and maintain relationships with customers. There are loyalty ideas for operations big and small: It can be as simple as a punch card for a free coffee or a loyalty app that empowers your business to collect information about customers’ shopping habits and offer promotions that cater to their needs. Either way, such efforts cultivate loyalty and drive customer engagement. ◗

he 2019 Star Women winners stepped into the spotlight at the inaugural Star Women in Convenience Awards Breakfast Event on Oct. 8, 2019. “I am honoured to be

with you to celebrate our winners as we grow this awards program,” said Kathryn Swan, group brand director, Convenience Store News Canada and Octane. “We are thrilled by the response and how the industry has embraced these awards for women.” Industry professionals and esteemed guests came together to celebrate the 17 winners, who travelled from across the country to attend the event at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont. In addition to the awards presentation, event highlights included an engaging keynote by Kathy Perrotta of Ipsos Canada, who outlined key socio-economic and macro trends shaping consumers’ consumption choices (see p. 32), as well as a dynamic discussion about mentorship, career building and industry insights by the Star Women Leadership Panel. A social nerve centre in the heart of his hometown: That’s how Jules Forget sees the food and convenience store that bears his name in Mont-Laurier, a forestry town and outdoors tourism destination in Quebec’s Upper Laurentians region, a three-hour drive northwest of Montreal. “It’s a real meeting place in the downtown core,” says Forget, owner of Dépanneur Jules, a Boni-Soir-affiliated business that carries everything from c-store standards like lottery tickets and tobacco to charcuterie, prepared foods and beer. “Everybody knows everyone who comes through the door. The vibe here is always welcoming and friendly.” Being part of people’s daily lives was a big reason why Forget decided to quit his job as regional manager for Labatt Brewery and buy the business in 1993. “I knew a promotion was coming and that I’d have to move to Montreal,” he recalls. “But I didn’t want to go. I’m from here and my wife was pregnant, so I started looking for a business opportunity here instead.” CCentral.ca

Forget’s attention quickly focused on a 6,000-sq.-ft. grocery store close to the courthouse, a health clinic and Rivière du Lièvre, a tributary of the Ottawa River that flows through Mont-Laurier. “The owner was a client of mine and he told me he was retiring so I thought, ‘Why not?’” says Forget. “I liked working with the public and thought I could make a decent living running a store.” From the get go, Forget started a years-long, million-dollar makeover of the store, including new fridges, freezers, compressors, air conditioning, cash register and counters. “I changed everything, even the store entrance,” says Forget. “But I figured I had to if I wanted to attract customers. Made fresh daily in the store’s kitchen by eight full-time employees who work from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the prepared food are sold at two dedicated counters. “It’s all take out, we have no places to sit and eat,” says Forget, who also runs a local catering service from the store. “We’re busiest during lunch hours, when workers from downtown businesses drop by. It’s a real hub of activity here.” Forget credits the attitudes and efforts of the store’s 26 employees, including six students, for helping to make the business a success. “We have a great team,” says Forget, who also runs a local insurance and financial planning business with his wife and a son. “People like working here. We treat them well.” A year ago, Forget sold a 50% stake in the business to Emile Lauzon, a 24-year-old bookkeeper from Mont-Laurier who has worked in the store since age 18.

The vibe here is always welcoming and friendly.” Lauzon notably led another major makeover in the store, including changes to the checkout and tobacco counters, the coffee and muffin area, as well as new lighting and new fridges for the prepared foods section. “It’s a big investment,” says Lauzon about the most recent renovations. “But like Jules always says, there’s more to running a store than taking profits. You have to reinvest to make it nice for your customers.” ◗

Milk. Bread. Tobacco. These are the traditional staples that drew customers to convenience stores. Tradition is changing. More and more it’s foodservice selections— everything from authentic shawarma to vegan pizza to gourmet burgers—that are attracting customers and keeping them coming back. C-stores are offering more diverse food options and emphasizing high quality, hoping to reduce the stigma of “gas station food,” says Julia Taylor, c-store segment leader with Cargill Foodservice in Gibsonia, PA. “They are focusing on having desirable and distinct products that build their brand reputation to create loyal customers and build their food business by becoming a foodservice destination.” The efforts are paying off. U.S. convenience stores experienced a 16th straight year of record in-store sales in 2018, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores’ (NACS) most recent state of the industry report. There, foodservice sales accounted for 22.6% of in-store sales, while in Canada it’s estimated to be about 13%.

This category continues to be a key focus for the convenience store channel, according to NACS, which defines foodservice as a broad category that primarily encompasses prepared food, as well as commissary foods and hot, cold and frozen dispensed beverages.

Evolving to accommodate foodservice The growth in foodservice also has led to an increase in store size. Overall, the average convenience store is 3,230 sq. ft. However, as newer stores feature touchscreen food-ordering kiosks, add space for in-store seating and waiting areas and incorporate an open-kitchen design, the size of new stores has increased to 4,991 sq. ft. in rural locations, and 4,603 sq. ft. in urban locations. Investing in food is time and money well spent, says Taylor. “Operations looking to offer broad mix solutions will be rewarded by their customers. Shoppers are seeking a place that gives them a break in the action of a hectic daily routine—a place that bails them out and always has their back.”

Catering to consumers’ tastes Indeed, selection and quality is such that many customers are turning to c-stores instead of fast-food outlets. “Convenience retailers with compelling foodservice pro-

grams are a growing threat to quick service restaurants,” says Frank Beard, convenience store trends analyst at GasBuddy, an app company based in Boston. “Data show that people choose convenience stores over fast-food locations because of the convenience of an all-in-one stop for fuel and food, followed by a preference for the taste of the food at c-stores.” Diversity is a cornerstone. Today’s foodservice options go well beyond prewrapped sandwiches, muffins and soup. “Convenience brands are well-positioned to cater to consumers’ tastes because they aren’t pigeon-holed into one type of cuisine,” Beard notes, adding that younger consumers prefer more variety, particularly with newer menu items like burritos and pizzas. 7-Eleven Canada, for example, has added Beyond Meat Pizza to its existing Hot to Go menu. Made with 100% plantbased Italian sausage crumbles, the new slice plays a dual role for many Canadians: it satisfies their craving for pizza and their desire to eat more healthily. “By expanding the fresh food assortment offered to our customers, we hope to provide options for every preference,” says Doug Rosencrans, VP and general manager of 7-Eleven Canada in Vancouver. “Beyond Meat has CCentral.ca

Caffeinated energy drinks snag a growing market share with out-of-the-box flavours and trend-driven formulations At just 2% to 3% of the market, energy drink sales represent a small but mighty segment of the Canadian beverage market. By 2022, annual sales in Canada are expected to reach US$604 million, according to Statista.com. Innovation and a thirsty public keen for something fast and convenient to provide a mental and physical boost are fuelling steady growth. More good news: Data indicates that 59% of all energy drink sales worldwide happen in convenience stores. That means ample opportunities to tap into the popularity of these caffeinated beverages enjoyed largely by young adults (ages 18 to 24). Coming on strong though are adults age 40+, a market segment that has seen a 279% increase in consumption over the past 10 years. From students to party-hearty types, to shift workers to weary parents, the demographics stretch across a broad spectrum. “We’re seeing, particularly in the last year and a half, a lot of new products hitting the market that can either be classified as caffeinated energy drinks, or beverages that just may have some additional caffeine in them,” says Jim Goetz, president, Canadian Beverage Association. “The market has been quite rigorous in terms of the number of new entries on Canadian shelves.” While the big players—Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar—dominate the energy drinks category, smaller regional companies have managed to grab a sliver of the market themselves. British Columbia’s Beaver Buzz flaunts their Canuckness with flavours such as Saskatoon Berry. Based in Quebec, Guru has managed to crack

the U.S. market with its organic versions made from botanical extracts to appeal to health-conscious buyers. Hamilton, Ont.-based Bomb Energy Drink has gone international, too, selling its citrus-infused formulation stateside and in the Dominican Republic. The industry leaders aren’t sitting on their laurels as competition heats up. Monster has introduced fresh flavours, like Mango Loco and has added Reign, a sporty energy drink with amino acids, electrolytes and CoQ10, to its lineup. It is also jumping on the tea (band)wagon with Monster Dragon Tea, a three-SKU selection featuring green tea, white tea and yerba mate. Meanwhile, Red Bull is charging forward with new tastes, too, including coconut berry, tropical fruits, blueberry and kiwi. Big brands will continue offering low-calorie or zero-sugar versions of their offerings. Exotic variations aside, Red Bull Classic, first introduced in 1987 in Austria, remains the No. 1 seller with almost $3 billion in U.S. sales alone. As Health Canada finalizes its regulations for caffeinated energy drinks, industry insiders foresee even more new companies and products coming with regulatory stability. In the temporary guidelines introduced a decade ago, the government capped caffeine content at 100 mg for small single-serve energy drinks (250 mL and less), like energy shots. Larger single-serve cans are limited to 180 mg. The new regulations are expected late in 2020. Responsible marketing is a concern among companies selling in Canada. Members of the Canadian Beverage Association (CBA) voluntarily adhere to a code

created for the energy drinks, outlining that these types of beverages should not be marketed to children from grades K-12. The organization is also working with Health Canada to talk about caffeine awareness as a whole, says Goetz, as opposed to a single category. Crystal ball gazers watching trends in the energy drink sector say we’ll be seeing companies ride the wave of popularity around CBD and incorporate it into products. Expect also to see more crossover products, like caffeinated, fitness-focused beverages, more energy teas and coffees, formulations using naturally sourced sugar (like monk fruit) and caffeine with newcomer guayusa extract and the addition of stimulants like ginseng. And there’s a possible game changer: U.S. retailers will be selling Coca-Cola Energy, the iconic brand’s first entry into the sector, starting in January 2020. Canadian convenience stores may want to save a spot on their shelves for all the new products coming down the pipe. ◗ CCentral.ca

Kathy Perrotta is vice-president at Ipsos Canada and leads FIVE, the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food and beverage tracking service, which examines the behaviour, attitudes and motivations of 20,000 Canadian consumers. Research shows that busy lifestyles, long daily work commutes and hyper-connectivity are influencing daily food and beverage choices. During the recent Star Women in Convenience Awards Event, Perrotta delivered a keynote outlining this evolution. She also spoke with CSNC Quick Bites columnist and foodservice insights professional Darren Climans about how the convenience and gas channel performs against these drivers to establish a framework for growth and future success.

DC: What are some examples of how these changes are being expressed in Canadians’ daily food and beverage choices? KP: The long-term trend over the last DC: What are the key socio-economic and macro trends shaping consumers’ current consumption choices? KP: We’re definitely in a period of flux in terms of the Canadians’ food and beverage choices. Compared to even five years ago, when we started the FIVE Food and Beverage tracking service, the changes are significant. The biggest single factor is the shift in Canadian demographics, which includes an aging population, shrinking household sizes, urbanization, growth in representation of specific minority groups, and the rising influence of the aging millennial cohort. These are manifested in the so-called trends that we see at the consumer level. Increased attention given to health and wellness is creating new food priorities. It is a function of both aging baby boomers and better-informed younger consumers. Similarly, consumers’ growing focus on convenience and personal/ customized food and beverage solutions is another example of a trend that is being driven by a number of factors across demographic groups.

DC: How has technology been a driver of change for consumers? KP: The false promise of technology was that it was supposed to save us time. While the advent of technology and social media in our everyday lives certainly provides a plethora of benefits, it also makes us mindfully aware of and contributes actively to the reality of daily time constraints. Bottom line is that we have become very time challenged. As a result, time is, in many ways, the new currency. This isn’t going away—it will continue to be the focus of retailers, manufacturers and foodservice operators alike.

half-century has been a slow movement of consumer eating occasions from at-home to away-from-home options. The data shows that this gradual shift continues to express itself in the decisions of younger consumers. The rise of ‘snacking culture’ and its prominence in our daily routines has ultimately reformed the traditional meal regime, which is now simpler, with fewer components than in the past, consumed alone and requires less time to prepare. This dovetails with trending in HMR (home meal replacement), meal kits and home delivery. Though still very small, our FIVE data shows increases in sourcing from both HMR and home delivery services to meet convenience-oriented needs. The emergence of meal kits is driven by more than convenience. It helps consumers satisfy their need for fresh, less processed foods while enjoying ‘no fail’ culinary exploration.

DC: You say in your keynote that ‘Canadians want convenience without compromise’— what are the recommendations that you have for the convenience and gas channel to build a framework for growth and future success? KP: There’s no doubt that overall growth and future success in retailing will be fuelled by convenience. That’s a good foundational fit for the C&G channel to emerge as a food-forward destination. But consumers’ ideas of what convenience means have evolved and matured. With time being the new retailing currency, there are many more options. Consequently, consumers’ desire for quick and easy is increasingly matched by their unwillingness to sacrifice needs for healthy, fresh, less processed, high quality products and unique experiences.

DC: Are there any competitors or disruptors on the horizon that C&G operators should keep an eye on? KP: One emerging concept is the micro-market, which combines the convenience of a vending machine with healthy, daily stocked options more typical of a grocery store or quickservice restaurant. These micro-markets don’t have any staff. They leverage cashier-less vending technologies— automation, firmware and payment systems—with the core elements of convenience retailing. Micro-markets present a potential disruption threat to all immediate consumption channels given their relatively lowcost set-up; ability to locate in the buildings where people live and work; and high margin—zero labour cost—appeal. In absolute terms, this segment is still very small but it has grown over the past three years and could evolve to become future competition to the C&G channel.

Water, water Recently, I was reading studies about Canada’s water regulations when I came upon this quote from T. Duncan Ellison, a man who, until recently, headed the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association. “Canada faces a variety of provincial and territorial approaches (to wastewater and biosolids) that are not consistent with federal legislation, and we have no structure to have a rational science-based discussion of the policies and regulatory requirements that would enable us to identify and promote the beneficial use of these environmental resources.” I hung my head in disappointment. Canada’s car wash sites use a lot of water. Sites target 150 litres per vehicle, with many locations running around 260 litres per car or truck washed. Considering there are around 3,200 wash sites in Canada, the scale of water usage is enormous. Operators work hard to establish best practices and they work with leading equipment manufacturers to limit water use and effluent. This is just good business. The challenge, however, is the myriad of differing regulations from federal, provincial and municipal regulato-

ry bodies. For example, an operator in Quebec must be equipped with a system that recovers, recycles and recirculates water used. In Alberta, regulations allow effluent with traces of metals, hydrocarbons, or glycols to be discharged to the wastewater system. In Winnipeg, self-service sites often have septic aromas with car wash effluent mixing with municipal wastewater and heading to the city’s (admittedly poor) treatment facilities: Winnipeg sends 8.65-billion litres of raw sewage straight into rivers and streams each year. Believe it or not, the car wash sector is at the forefront of systems that dramatically reduce effluent. However, operators are often hamstrung by municipal or provincial water regulations that are slow to mitigate the challenges of modern water use. Now is the time for an overarching national water use mandate that will guide each province and create a consistent set of water use and effluent guidelines across the country.

Car wash formats offer unique challenges and benefits By Kelly Gray

To touch or not to touch—that’s the question for many car wash customers. And, many of these customers ask whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of the automated tunnel wash or to take arms against a sea of troubles and go with the touchless express option.

Were Hamlet alive today, what option would this prince of Denmark seek out to gleam his ride? Both formats come with pros and cons and each operator has to understand their unique market to determine which is right for their customer base. “The oil companies are the largest operator group of touchless systems in Canada,” says Bill Barber of Mississauga, Ont.-based Washlinks, a leading equipment supplier to the trade. He believes companies, such as Suncor and Co-op, use touchless rollover wash systems because of the small footprint involved with express installations and the opportunity to greatly limit surface damage. “Touchless rollover systems are less costly to build and are less challenging to operate. This makes a good fit for sites where companies want to keep staffing levels and costs down.” Where touchless systems often fall short is speed and volume. As Barber points out, there are two ways to make more money in the car wash business: One is to increase the number of washes per hour and the other is to increase the average revenue per vehicle. Touchless express rollover systems can typically run about a dozen cars per hour, however a standard friction tunnel with a conveyor accommodates one car per foot of tunnel per hour. “With a tunnel wash, volumes are considerably higher and the outcome is often superior to what a rollover touchless system can achieve,” he says, adding that oily residue following a rain can be very hard to remove from vehicle surfaces without the aid of brushes and soft cloth scrubbing. Alberta-based car wash operator Sylvain Blouin, president of RockN-Wash, says touchless wash sites can deliver customer satisfaction, but operators must pay attention to the details. “If designed properly with

sufficient chemical dwell time, a wind door to allow a two stage—acid and alkaline—presoak chemical application during the summer months, and with the right high-pressure impact water, as well as the proper front and rear bumper application, and excellent chemical selection, yes, I would consider it. That said, during the summer months, with road film and bugs baked onto clear-coat paint finishes, friction is often the only way to remove everything.” Blouin says that if touchless sites are not designed properly, they can be a challenge for the operator. “If the design is incorrect and the chemicals don’t have enough dwell time to do what they are designed to do, it does not matter what technology is used, the results won’t be great. An operator should look at the design first, then the technology.” He knows what he is talking about, having operated a touchless tunnel for four years. “At first, we were not achieving the same results as friction because our original design was incorrect. It was painful, but after some layout and chemicals and applicator changes, we were able to achieve results as good as friction. With only water and chemicals to work with, touchless is definitely more challenging to operate, however, many consumers do prefer this format because it tends to be more gentle on vehicle surfaces. His new site, which is to open in 2020 in Sherwood Park, just outside of Edmonton, will offer a hybrid system with both friction and touchless options. According to Blouin, both systems have their benefits and he wants his customers—be they Hamlet or the Wilsons from around the corner—to have that choice. “In the end it’s all about customer service and meeting unique needs,” he says, emphasizing operators must know their customers and then deliver the services they demand. Not long after he was named VP of Crevier Group’s fuel division in early 2018, Jean-Claude Clément was tasked with choosing a vehicle car wash system for the company’s showcase service station off exit 112 on Highway 20 in Beloeil, Que., a 20-minute drive east of Montreal.

“WE USED TO BE MORE FOCUSED ON THE SALE OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS,” SAYS CLÉMENT. “BUT OUR MODEL HAS CHANGED OVER THE PAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS.”

“To make such a decision you need to consider many things to make sure the system you choose is right for the business,” says Clément. “You need to look at the area and market profile, the type of traffic and the location.” Crevier Group operates 220 service stations across Quebec and distributes petroleum products, notably Chevron, in seven Canadian provinces. In the end, Clément opted for a touchless LaserWash 360 Plus from PDQ for the company’s new Beloeil site, a system he became familiar with during the 22 years he spent building and running Pétro-T’s network of 150 service stations across Quebec. “I’d bought several earlier generations of that model and they always worked well,” recalls Clément, who left Pétro-T in 2015.“ It’s a reliable car wash that we thought offered the right mix of efficiency and quality for the Beloeil site.”

Impressive development In operation since July 2019, the new car wash and four-island gas bar are part of

an ambitious plan by local promoters to develop the entire 1-million-sq.-ft. site into a multi-functional commercial, entertainment and residential oasis within commuting distance of downtown Montreal. Dubbed the Faubourg du Richelieu, the $125-million project by Groupe Lobato involves the construction by 2021 of commercial and office space, a 100-room hotel and convention centre, a water park, a sports facility (including an indoor soccer field), residential condos and the project’s pièce de résistance—a marina on the historic Richelieu River. Deals have also been inked with Tim Hortons and A&W. To date, only the Crevier service station, a 99-slip marina and several condos are built on the land, which is still mostly greenfield. However, work is to begin soon on 400 parking spaces conveniently located adjacent to the wash site. The spots are expected to be in heavy demand starting in January 2021 when Montreal’s Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge-Tunnel, which runs over and beneath the St. Lawrence River in the city’s east end, will close for repairs for one year. “Commuter traffic on Highway 20 will be backed-up right to our door,” says Clément. “I’m sure many people will decide to simply park their cars here and take the bus. Having 400 cars here every day will be good for our gas and wash business.”

The Crevier service station is one of four that the company operates within a few kilometres of one another on both sides of the river. Of those sites, the Beloeil location is the only one with a convenience store and a universal fast charge superstation for electric vehicles (EV). The fast charging station is one of 10 that Crevier operates at service centres across Quebec in conjunction with Electric Circuit, Canada’s first public charging network for electric vehicles, which offers 240volt and 400-volt charging stations in the parking lots of partners in Quebec and Eastern Ontario. Crevier’s Beloeil station is the first with rapid charge facilities, which recharge most cars to 80% in only 20 minutes. “EV is getting big in Quebec,” says Clement. “That’s why we are working to install them at every station in our network whenever we renovate or build new.”

Site meshes with business plan Clement says that Crevier was “in no rush” to build a car wash in the first phase of the Beloeil site—plans originally included the gas pumps and EV charging station, plus a well-stocked convenience store. But, his hiring and being tasked with finding the right car wash system for the site dovetailed with Crevier’s increasing interest in the retail side of its service station network. “We used to be more focused on the sale of petroleum products,” says Clément. “But our model has changed over the past four or five years.” With the addition of the Beloeil car wash, Crevier now operates five automatic washes, including four in CCentral.ca

Quebec and one in the Eastern Ontario border town of Hawkesbury. They are all different makes and models and include both touch and touchless equipment. “We’ve got a bit of everything,” says Clément. “We went for simplicity, we didn’t add any extra features or gadgets like Lava Baths or Armor All,” he says of installing the LaserWash 360 Plus at Beloeil. “We went for a standard format where people can choose between three kinds of wash—regular wash, wash with wax and super wash, where we put three-colour foam on vehicles, which puts on a nice show.” In the spirit of keeping it simple, there are no apps; instead customers can pay at the pump or inside. Clément suggests it is too early to know if Quebec’s famously cold and snowy winters—coupled with the notoriously strong winds that whip across Beloeil and its low-lying, farm-rich St. Lawrence Plain region—will be a problem for the new wash. “Bad weather shouldn’t be a challenge,” says Clément. “Car washes are built for winters. The entrances and exits are heated, as are the cement pads, which are heated when electronic sensors detect a risk of freezing. Those heat-active systems should help to avoid any ice buildup.” He expects the same solid performance from the new wash in Beloeil as the earlier generation models he installed years ago for Petro-T. “These are solidly constructed systems that respond to our needs, which are providing an acceptable wash at the best price/quality ratio for both purchase and operation,” says Clément. “I’d make the same choice again today.” OCTANE

THE WASH VOLUME REPORTING PROGRAM INTRODUCES NEW UPGRADES The Canadian Carwash Association, together with Kent Group, are pleased to announce exciting changes to the Wash Volume Reporting Program. Since 2006, the Wash Volume Reporting Program has been the foremost source of carwash data for the Canadian carwash industry providing Canada-wide statistics on cycles and revenues. As of September 2019 the new enhanced reporting interface includes robust analytics and graphical displays. Available to users on a monthly basis, the new platform includes historical data back to 2017 allowing trend comparisons over a long range. In addition, users have the flexibility to filter or group together different regions or carwash types to modify views and display only the data that suits their specific needs. Fundamentally, this system saves carwash owners time; all available data and analytics is in one user-friendly file, providing ease of access and use. What has not changed with these new improvements is the commitment to ensure user confidentiality within the program. No individual company names or revenue are ever shared. Regional and carwash by type data is shared only if there is a minimum of three participants submitting data. In November 2011, I stumbled into what would become a life-changing event. I had just toured an Express Exterior car wash in Cheyenne, for Breeze Thru Car Wash and all I could think about is, “how do more people not know about this?!” It was a business with a myriad of opportunity. One which I could apply my diverse background in trades and business education toward. I recall almost being in disbelief that a business could offer hands-on learning for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other unique systems…I was compelled to tell the world about this! In 2017, after the International Carwash Association in Las Vegas, I felt a welling up in my soul of contribution to people via this great industry of which I had come to love. Having

interviewed more than 12,500 people, I had the first-hand experience of identifying what was missing in people’s lives absence of contribution, purpose and passion. The root cause, I believed, had much to do with self-value, aptitude and ability. So began my vision of a program, Leadership Worth Following (LWF)! The Vision of LWF is: A dynamic, forwardthinking program that enhances the value of the car wash industry and develops successful contributors for communities. LWF is comprised of individuals that are like-minded contributors to society via their car wash businesses. LWF travels all over to identify individuals with desire to enhance the car wash industry and discover actionable items via mentorship that result in positive impacts.
