Raise high the new bar, retailers
I
t’s not easy being a successful hardware store these days. And we’re not even taking about supply chains or labor shortages. We’re talking about the challenge of competing in an environment of big billion-dollar boxes and the all-Amazon all-the-time consumer mindset. Here’s how Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. CEO John Venhuizen described the situation back in March at the co-op’s convention in Las Vegas: The consumer’s shopping experience, Venhuizen explained, needs to be so jaw-dropping good, that “shopping at Amazon.com looks shallow, boring and pathetic by comparison. That’s the new bar.”
Eric Squires oversees the Glenville Hardman’s.
And that’s what we’re talking about, beginning on page 15. Our 12 th annual listing of community-focused, service-oriented, growth-minded and innovation-obsessed businesses— one store from each of the 50 states — chronicles the raising high of the new bar. Take our cover model: Hardman’s Hardware of West Virginia. The company didn’t survive and thrive for 115 years and four generations of family ownership by taking it easy. O.R. Hardman’s original

Ken Clark Editor in Chief 1907 agriculture-focused business adapted to challenges over four generations. Now, the seven-location dealer provides expertise on everything from STIHL equipment to countertop installation, from home repair to gifts for Mother’s Day. The Glenville, W. Va. store (on the cover) raised the bar of the shopping experience with a 2019 overhaul and renovation that brought in new fixtures, shelving, countertops and signage (inside and out). The West Virginia All Star features a well-lit power aisle, and a drive-through lumber aisle. Glenville Manager Eric Squires came to his position in 2018, and led the Glenville remodel effort. “I love working at Hardman’s,” he told HBSDealer. That kind of enthusiasm is a basic ingredient for a STIHL Hardware Store All Star. When asked for the business’s greatest strength, Hardman’s Chief Marketing Officer Kimberly Hardman answered quickly: “Our employees.” She added: “We have quite a few that have been here more than 10 years, and others that are retiring out after 30 or 35 years. That’s something we’re really proud of. “Our biggest thing that we try to live by is the idea of ‘It’s our family serving yours.’ We think of our employees as our family, but then we also think of our customers as family. And we want to treat them the way that you would expect your family to be treated. With respect, and just take care of them.” Congratulations to Hardman’s Hardware and the entire class of 2022 STIHL Hardware All Stars. The class varies widely in size and scope, but they’re all raising the bar of retail excellence. Have you seen All Star performance? Let us know at news@hbsdealer.com.

Housing demand, rising prices and avocado toast A FE W ‘FINAL WORDS’ ON THE NE AR FUTURE OF THE HOUSING INDUSTRY
From left, Saunders, Nanayakkara-Skillington, Yun, Fratantoni and emcee Richard Laible.
The recent ProDealer Industry Summit in Washington, D.C., featured some of the industry’s top industry forecasters and economic analysts in a forward-looking review of business and the economy. Forecasts are continually revised (visit HBSDealer.com for updates), but many of the ideas presented in D.C. deserve repeating. Here are excerpts from the panelists responses to the question: “Any final thoughts?” Matt Saunders, VP building products, John Burns Real Estate Consulting: “If you’re looking for new construction building materials spending, watch builder cycle times, more than watching starts in this environment. And for those of you who are just now watching [the 1970s hit show] Star Trek, inventories are probably too lean for the demand that’s coming.” Danushka Nanayakkara-Skillington, assistant VP for forecasting and analysis, NAHB. “Everyone was blaming the millennials for eating avocado toast and just saving money, but they are out buying
houses now. So coupled with the demand from the millennials and the housing shortage, we have so much demand coming through. But it’s the supply side — the labor, the lots, the lumber, the lending, the regulation costs. We should be able to rise to the challenge, but it is a huge challenge.” Lawrence Yun, chief economist, National Association of Realtors. “When the price of bread increased in India, there were massive street protests. When the price of gasoline rose after an adjustment of French policy, the Yellow Vests came out [to protest in France.] Is there anything that could really trigger social dissidence here? What about housing costs? With housing going up so high, we have a permanent division between

Marijuana testing HBSDealer asked readers about drug testing in early April. Since then, New Jersey joined the growing list of states (18, plus Guam and D.C.) where recreational use of marijuana is legal. Here are the results of the timely question: For more reader surveys, visit HBSDealer.com

owners and renters. Owners continue to save the equity, using housing wealth to fund a college education for children, while the renters feel completely left out. And this is the path we may be going on, rising home prices and the home ownership rate not rising. At what point do we have this housing crisis move into huge social discontent?” Michael Fratantoni, chief economist, Mortgage Bankers Association “I was on a panel with one of my members recently and his comment was, 'Look, over four or five years this is a fantastic business to be in. Quarter to quarter it is a bear.' And it is just a challenge. And I imagine that is what many of you are feeling these days as well. The next three-to-five year period is probably going to be the strongest housing demand we’re going to have in history in this country. So enjoy it over this threeto-five period, even if the next couple of quarters are a little bumpy.”

A new flagship for Tum-A-Lum Lumber Tum-A-Lum Lumber’s 96-year-old Pendelton, Ore., store has stood the test of time. But a new, modern, completely remodeled version opened earlier this year. Tum-A-Lum partnered with award-winning Graham Baba Architects to create a modern building materials center. TAL Holdings CEO Jason Blair said: “The new store will enhance their community and serve the surrounding area for many years to come.”

There is a full-line hardware store that includes a design center with cabinets, countertops, doors, and windows. There is also a lawn and garden care center, including a full nursery outside. Grip-Free offers greater brush control, reduced hand fatigue, comfort and pain-free painting. At the recent NHS show in Las Vegas, inventor, and industrial designer, Greg Freuler said, “when I was painting, I noticed my hand was killing me, so I wanted to invent something better.” Fun fact: One hundred prototypes were tried in the two-and-a-half-year development of the product.

Spring is Here. That’s how Orgill describes its latest lawn and garden program. HBSDealer caught up with Alan Shore, director of seasonal merchandise at Orgill, to explain it. “The program was first launched in 2017 to support Orgill’s initiative to make its lawn and garden category a core competency within their business,” said Shore. “We knew that if we wanted to be more successful in this category, we needed to find new ways to make our customers more successful.” The annual program, he said, is centered around having well-known brands, dominant breadth in all categories, competitive pricing, and high quality. It’s also profitable for members. “It provides the best booking discounts we offer,” he said. This turn-key retail lawn and garden program is designed to boost sales and margin; differentiate their dealers’ customers from their competition; educate their staff and consumers; and improve the look and shopability of the in-store lawn and garden department. “We partnered with key lawn and garden vendors for additional support. We needed to build an assortment that included brands that resonate with

the consumer at both the national and regional level. These brands boosted the credibility of the assortment within the store,” said Shore. Bottom line: It’s growing. “Each year, we’ve seen participation increase within our dealers, and sales grow within our participating vendors; and in the lawn and garden category, as a whole.”

Safety concerns heat up HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FIRES AND FATALITIES.
H
ere’s a hot take: 18 of the last 19 summers were the hottest on record. And that’s one reason safety is a hot topic in 2022. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the first time has launched a National Emphasis Program to combat injuries and illness related to heat. Through the new program, OSHA will conduct more heat-related workplace inspections, to prevent workers across various industries from suffering from preventable injuries, illnesses or, even worse, fatalities. “Tragically, the three-year average of workplace deaths caused by heat has doubled since the early 1990s,” said Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “These extreme heat hazards aren’t limited to outdoor occupations, the seasons or geography. From farm workers in California to construction workers in Texas and warehouse workers in Pennsylvania, heat illness presents a growing hazard for millions of workers.” While heat is a new emphasis of OSHA, a recurring program running this month called the National Safety Stand-Down aims to limit deadly falls. usy Beaver Building Centers recently opened its 25th neighborhood home improvement center in Delmont, Pennsylvania. The new store features an array of state-of-the-art technologies — and a robot. Automation comes in the form of Badger Technologies’ autonomous robot equipped with Badger Retail InSight software, which scans the entire store every day and alerts management to out-of-stock and misplaced products. Further, it’s the first home improvement center in the U.S. to fully use Pricer electronic shelf labels (ESL), a system that provides greater pricing accuracy by electronically maintaining the price signage, said the company. “Technology is a key imperative in our mission to be the favorite home improvement center in the communities we serve,” says Adam Gunnett, Busy Beaver’s director of IT and marketing. “We relentlessly look for innovative ways to increase efficiencies and empower our associates to provide legendary customer service.” Both technologies relieve the staff of time-consuming tasks and give them more time to service customers. In addition, the ESL system and robot significantly speed up the handling of online orders, a popular shopping option at all Busy Beaver locations, said the retailer.

In Texas, a voice for business MIRE YA Z APATA ADVOCATES E VERY WHERE FOR PRODE ALERS By Andy Carlo

During the 2021 session of the Texas Legislature, the LAT worked toward getting bipartisan legislation passed that reformed state regulations regarding trucking accidents. On the national front, Zapata says that Texas Dealers have a long history of engagement with the NLBMDA. “We strongly believe in the importance of a unified industry voice advocating for the entire lumber and building materials supply chain in Washington,” she says. “LAT members are focused on engaging our industry partners in this work—manufacturers, suppliers, service providers—all of us have a stake in this and we need the entire industry to invest time and resources to it. The policy issues before Congress and the administration and the decisions that are made today—on taxes, workforce, trade—will impact generations.” The positive impact that family-owned businesses have on the economy and the industry has been a major takeaway for Zapata since she began with prodealers and the association. “Family-owned businesses matter and much of their success is driven by their culture,” Zapata explains. “In a business world that values consolidation, taking pride in your name and mission drives the success and staying power of the LAT membership.”
ireya Zapata will celebrate five years with the Lumbermen’s Association of Texas (LAT) this summer. During her tenure at the LAT, where she serves as executive vice president, Zapata has quickly made an impact on the lumber and building materials industry both in Texas and on the national level. At the most recent ProDealer Industry Summit held in Washington in March, the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) presented the Chairman’s Award to Zapata. “The people in our industry are inspiring and they motivate me in my daily work,” Zapata said in accepting the award. “I believe, small businesses, family-owned businesses are one of our country’s treasures. It is an honor to have a small role in supporting them and I am grateful to Jim [Bishop, the NLBMDA chairman] and the team at NLBMDA for this recognition.” Some of Zapata’s formative years in her professional career occurred at the Texas House of Representatives. It was there that her office was located next door to then State Representative Allan Ritter. Zapata describes Ritter as “an incredible friend and mentor.” Ritter and his family operated Ritter Lumber made sure that Zapata was educated on all bills that had the potential to impact the Texas LBM industry. “In the legislative district that I worked, we had many wonderful independent, Texas Dealers, including McCoy’s Building Supply—Brian McCoy and Meagan Jones—strong advocates for our industry at the legislature,” Zapata told HBSDealer. “I was attracted to our industry because of their passion and commitment to our industry and state.” The LAT represents 110 Texas dealers and 100 associate members. Zapata —Mireya Zapata, says the association is fortunate to Lumberman's Association of Texas (LAT) have an engaged board of directors and membership. “Their input and guidance keeps me and our association focused on advocating for our members via our government affairs efforts, providing professional development, networking opportunities, and supporting the up-and-coming leaders in our industry.” Recent achievements from the LAT include focusing on members’ insurance rates being impacted by “frivolous lawsuits and trucking accidents,” Zapata notes.
