Whether it’s in Napa Valley or Bordeaux, your vineyard wedding is guaranteed to have vines, wines and unparalleled views. You’re on a tropical beach straight off of a postcard – the sun is low, the surf is gentle – and you’re ready to say “I do.” To make sure there are no hitches while getting hitched, think through your wedding wardrobe before stepping out onto the warm sand with a bouquet in hand. Look for a dress with a tulle skirt so light it will skim over the beach, and low-heeled sandals that will stand their ground.

The pipes are calling… and they’re calling you to the rolling countryside of the British Isles for a Gaelic wedding, complete with a handfasting ceremony, bagpipe entry, and tartan. To prepare for a night of traditional jigs and reels, choose a dress without a train to minimize trip ups; once the whisky starts flowing though, all bets are off. Aim for rosy cheeks and soft curls, and you’ll look like you walked right out of an Outlander scene.

If you’re headed to a place where winter rules – with frost on the treetops, a thick layer of snow on the ground, and a crisp, cloudless sky – you’ll know just what to expect from the weather, and can plan your ceremony, reception, and wedding outfit choices accordingly. Even further from North America, the islands of Fiji offer loads of resorts to serve as the wedding anchor. The paperwork for obtaining a marriage licence here is straightforward, with arrangements easily made by your destination wedding specialist. Tahiti is a dream-come-true for couples looking for a private affair. Opt for a luxe property such as the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa where you can say your vows on a motu (island reef), on a catamaran, or even in your private bungalow. Expect romantic dinners, intimate sunset cruises, and an ideal spot to spend your honeymoon afterwards. There’s also an option for a traditional Tahitian ceremony with flower crowns and leis, traditional outfits, and a priest who can baptize the couple with a Polynesian name.

The bonus of staging your wedding in the South Pacific is that your honeymoon can literally be next door. Love Story:

On a very cold January night, Mara and Jeevan were each out with friends having dinner at separate tables of the same restaurant. Not realizing that they were sitting back to back and only moments away from beginning their happily ever after, Mara reached over to hug her friend and elbowed Jeevan in the back of the head – they laughed about it. A year after, Mara and Jeevan moved in together and five years later started planning their dream wedding.

Location:

The couple said “I do” at The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun, where the beach was the perfect backdrop. Guests attended from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel.

To meet Mara and Jeevan’s requests and make their dream destination wedding come true, Marie Odorizzi, their DestinationVows® specialist, researched all resorts that would meet every detail and expectation until she found the perfect one for them. From the attentive wedding coordinators to the natural beauty of the location, The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun was the ideal setting for an unforgettable destination wedding. With the sun shining down on the happy couple and their family and friends, Mara and Jeevan took the first steps of their new journey together on pure white sands, stress-free with Marie having taken care of every detail with the wedding coordinators of the hotel.

Day Details

Theme:

The theme of the wedding was pineapples – perfect for a fun, tropical wedding! They had it everywhere from centerpieces to chair flowers and Jeevan’s boutonnière, even on wedding invites! For Mara, it’s all about what it represents: the outside (life) can be prickly, tough and not so pleasant at times, but the inside (relationship) can always be sweet if you work hard to keep it that way.

©BICOASTAL IMAGES

To mix their Jewish and Hindu backgrounds, the ceremony took place under a chuppah (a wedding canopy symbolizing the building of a home). Women on Jeevan’s side all wore traditional saris, and his parents did a puja (Hindu ritual blessing) before Mara and Jeevan’s “first look.” The couple asked their guests to shower them with rice at the end of the ceremony, as rice has a symbolic meaning of prosperity, abundance and fertility in both cultures. Mara and Jeevan also incorporated some gold into the décor because gold is a traditional wedding color in Hinduism.

©BICOASTAL IMAGES

Mara and Jeevan said their vows on the sun-kissed beach at The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun in front of 70 members of their family and close friends.

©BICOASTAL IMAGES

Ceremony:

CENTERPIECES

Mara wore a custom white sari with lace and pearls made by Raziya Remtulla of DULHAN By Mischief in Ontario, Canada. Her reception outfit was a silver sequin gown from Nordstrom. Jeevan’s wedding ceremony outfit was a suit jacket by King & Bay Custom Clothing – that had pineapple lining to tie into the theme – and white pants. His evening wear was a grey 3-piece suit also custom-made by King & Bay.

©BICOASTAL IMAGES

RUM CAKE

Wedding Wear:

Traditions:

At the reception, each guest was given a small box with a piece of “wedding cake” made by Jeevan’s parents, a tradition in Tamil Sri Lankan culture where a family member bakes a homemade rum wedding cake as guest favors. There was also a mix of traditional Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish and Tamil music at the welcome party and reception. And, of course, at the end of the ceremony, the Jewish tradition of stomping on a glass.

Photographer: CHAIR FLOWERS

©BICOASTAL IMAGES

Sometimes Mother Nature decides to throw us a curveball. Even though there were high winds in Cancun on the day Mara and Jeevan wed, The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun already had a back-up plan in motion, moving the reception from a beach terrace to a sheltered sunset terrace. Thanks to the onsite wedding coordinators, the location change was seamless.

WEDDING RINGS IN THE SAND

Caribbean in the

By Don Nichols

Welcome to the Caribbean, where sunny romantic scenes play out daily on hundreds of islands with some of the world’s best stretches of powdery sand – perfect for your island nuptials. No wonder the Caribbean’s alluring beaches make it a favorite for destination weddings, as do other incentives such as accessibility and a vast selection of resorts and islands to choose from for your big day. The Caribbean spoils couples with many wedding venue choices. In the Bahamas, crystal-blue water surrounds Pearl Island, a private isle perfect for an intimate ceremony. For something totally opposite, the Casibari Rock Formations in Aruba’s Paradera District serve up a desert oasis setting. In St. Lucia, many nuptials take place with jaw-dropping backdrops such as the Pitons or the 55-feet-tall Diamond Falls waterfall.

WEDDING CEREMONY ON THE BEACH

The opportunities for perfect wedding photos are endless. On the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, in Punta Cana, palm trees line 30-plus-miles of picture-perfect beaches. On Pink Sand Beach, a 3.5-mile-long beauty on chic Harbour Island in the Bahamas, pulverized coral gives the sand an enchanting pink glow.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

For an intimate, exclusive wedding, it’s worth considering smaller islands, such as Nevis or Turks and Caicos. Nevis has an intimate feel thanks to its small size. Boutique plantation inns steeped in history entice wedding parties. Stone sugar mills and the remains of Cottle Church, built in 1824, provide ideal backdrops for photos. In Turks and Caicos, destination weddings can be held at lush hotels and villas fronting the white sand and azure water. Resorts host many toes-in-the-sand weddings, but couples venture to deserted Water Cay and its stellar beach for a more intimate ceremony. Another smaller island to consider is Grenada with its unspoiled beauty and breathtaking vistas. Couples can tie the knot on idyllic Grand Anse Beach, dotted with luxury hotels, or on one of many pristine, undeveloped beaches. The unconventional say “I do” literally in the Caribbean, at an underwater sculpture park.

Before and after vows are exchanged, the islands offer an array of fun activities for those not content to just sunbathe on the beach. Reggae performances all around the island score big in Jamaica, as does taking in heart-throbbing cliff-diving and romantic sunsets at Rick’s Café, perched atop a 32-foot-high cliff in Negril. A don’t-miss in St. Lucia: a detoxifying mud bath at the Sulphur Springs volcano, touted as the world’s only drive-in volcano. Other big draws for weddings? Lodging options are plentiful at a variety of price points, especially in Jamaica, home to numerous all-inclusive resorts. Many isles make it easy to wed with lenient residency requirements. In St. Lucia, couples can even tie the knot on the same day they arrive, if they can resist hitting one of the Caribbean’s postcard-perfect beaches first.

Planning Tips

For Your Dream Destination Wedding By Karen Leiva

The proposal was made – you said yes! Now, it’s time to set the wheels in motion and begin planning for your special day. We know planning a wedding, regardless of how big or small the event will be, can be overwhelming – that’s why more couples are enlisting the support of qualified destination wedding experts to help them with every step of their journey. With an expert guiding you, there’s no need to sweat the small stuff, just let them take care of the details to make your dream wedding come true. We connected with Lisa Sheldon, president of Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA), to ask for insights and tips to start planning your wedding. Here are six top recommendations.

1

Pick a Date

2

Set a Budget There really is a wedding for every budget. It depends on a few things, including the number of guests, the type of hotel and its amenities, and the wedding options you choose. Your wedding specialist will be able to show you options that are within your budget, and also determine if there are hotel perks you can access – for example, some hotels offer the wedding free of charge to the couple if they have a certain number of guests. Your specialist can work within your budget to help ensure travel logistics, special day arrangements, as well as any extras such as entertainment, suit your needs. Destination wedding specialists will have an arsenal of knowledge and experience to help steer you in the right direction, which is why it’s important to meet with one at the beginning of your planning process.

©RUSH MILLETTE PARADISE PHOTOGRAPHY

Once the proposal has been accepted, start talking about the kind of wedding you want – and when you want to get married. Within 12 months, 14 months, 18 months? Making a timeline will help you stay organized and not miss an important deadline in the planning process. It’s smart to engage a destination wedding specialist right at the beginning so they can help outline milestone dates.

P L A N N I N G

Once you’ve set your budget, it’s time to start thinking about who you want to invite to your wedding. Important considerations include whether you are inviting family and friends and if children will be included. If it’s just the two of you, there are possibilities to broadcast the ceremony to loved ones back home. These details will make a difference in choosing your resort.

©RUSH MILLETTE PARADISE PHOTOGRAPHY

Your destination wedding specialist will be able to target different resorts based on your guests’ needs so it’s important to know early who you want to invite to your dream wedding. It’s also key to be mindful of guests’ commitment to attending because of the cost, as well as access since older grandparents may have special mobility requirements. One of the benefits of working with a destination wedding specialist is they can facilitate installment payments throughout the planning process, over time. Plus, a specialist can try to accommodate friends’ and families’ financial status and target destinations guests will comfortably afford as well.

Choose Your Ceremony Symbolic or legal? It’s important to know the difference when you are planning your destination wedding. A symbolic ceremony is not legal, so you must legally marry at home (most often with an officiant or at your city hall). Symbolic ceremonies in destinations are made to feel like the real thing – most guests will not know the difference. A legal ceremony in a destination is where a judge or legal representative officiates your ceremony. The key thing to know here is that for a legal marriage, each destination will have its own regulations. For example, Mexico requires you to be in the country for a few days prior to your wedding. You also need to have blood tests completed, which costs extra, and the ceremony will likely be in Spanish (an interpreter will be provided). The Dominican Republic requires paperwork ahead of time and it needs to be translated first. It is often easier to get married at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at your destination of choice.

Decide on Your Destination

6

Consult Your Destination Wedding Specialist

Depending on the time of year chosen for your wedding, the weather will play a major factor. There are other things that will help you decide: is there a destination you feel sentimental about? Does the accessibility of the destination matter? When considering easy access, many couples choose Cancun because it is easy to get there and, with so many resort choices, every wedding is unique. Other popular wedding destinations include Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Las Vegas, and Hawaii – but there is something for everyone in all destinations.

Ask your destination wedding specialist if they have been to the destination and if they are familiar with its resorts and off-site venues. Ask them what exactly they can do to assist in planning your wedding so that you have a full understanding of what to expect. A specialist can ensure your big day goes smoothly with travel and resort arrangements; they will take the pressure off and ensure you enjoy a seamless wedding.

Turks & Caicos Ashlee and James

Love Story:

Ashlee and James met at a local restaurant – she was having dinner with a girlfriend and he had just left a wedding. When their eyes met, he introduced himself. The two went on a dinner date the following week and their relationship quickly grew. James proposed to Ashlee on a private catamaran trip in the British Virgin Islands. As soon as they arrived, James dropped down on one knee and popped the question. Ashlee said yes in that beautiful setting and they celebrated with Champagne and an amazing sunset with the rest of their friends.

Location:

After their tropical engagement, the couple opted for a wedding in another sun-soaked locale. They exchanged their vows at The Palms Turk and Caicos.

Ceremony:

Ashlee and James got married in front of 50 guests under a beach wedding arch constructed out of wood and sheer fabric – with white roses within the twines of the vines – and decorated with hurricane candles. They chose an earth tone palette to accentuate the turquoise water, with white and pale pink flowers and a lot of greenery, including eucalyptus leaves which had an amazing aroma, giving the setting a rustic, “beachy chic” feel.

Ashlee was wearing a sexy yet elegant dress that was also very comfortable, made by an upcoming designer, Marie Davies of La Fleur Wedding Designs. The bodice was made with hand-sewn lace pieces that matched the lace on the train. The body of the dress was fitted with a high slit in the front. As for James, he had a custom-made tan linen suit with a white button-down shirt.

Reception:

Romantic Elegance in Europe

Destination weddings are seldom a “one ceremony” type of event, so there are many opportunities to customize your experience. Here are a few ideas on how to make your wedding feel more like you.

3 8 | D E S T I N AT I O N VOW S 2 0 2 0

MARRIED COUPLE IN POSITANO, ITALY

Beach Chic

A destination wedding by the beach also provides a fantastic opportunity to show your unique personal style or to switch up any traditional bride and groom style expectations. The bride may consider a lightweight sleeveless dress at a sun destination wedding or skip the gown altogether and wear a cocktail-length dress. The groom may opt for a shortssuit to match his bride’s cocktail-length dress. Another idea is to ask your wedding guests to match a theme – maybe Hawaiian attire, so the bride and groom can match guests while sporting leis down the aisle.

Put Your Own Twist to It

You’ve chosen your wedding destination for a reason! This is your opportunity to share your love and passion for this particular destination with your guests. To set an exciting tone with your wedding guests, start with your invitations. For example, you could make your wedding invite look like a passport, with many clever and customizable components and a title such as “passport to paradise” or “travel the world in the name of love.” Once you have all arrived at your destination, themed parties, dinners or soirees can be a great way of incorporating unique influences from your destination into your event. For example, if you’re in the Caribbean, consider adding something like a signature cocktail, such as a Bahama Mama, to the menu for your Bahamian cocktail reception. In a destination like Cuba, you might include a cigar bar. In Mexico, ask your destination wedding specialist to help you arrange something fun like a tequila tasting. You can decorate your tasting station with an array of Mexicaninspired decorations like mini sombreros, traditional vibrant colors in geometric patterned designs for a linen to cover the table, or a backdrop that says “Viva el Amor” meaning “Live love” in Spanish.

#WeddingHashtags

Come up with a clever hashtag that will reflect your personality and give you the added benefit of being able to view your guests’ photos the next day. You can even carry your hashtag from bachelorette and bridal shower to the big day if you get clever enough. It can be tricky, but just remember social media is at your fingertips. Search through common hashtags on social media sites like Instagram to get inspired. Here are a few beach-themed hashtags for inspiration: #OceanBreezeWeddingPlease, #BuoyMeetsGirl

Including Family

For many couples, family is one of the most important parts of your wedding day – you’re essentially merging your families. Find ways to include your nearest and dearest in your big day and look into the traditions or symbolisms in the country you’ve chosen for your vows for inspiration. For example, if you’re having a Dominican Republic beach wedding, and if you have a musical family or some of your guests are talented singers, consider including the local tradition of “ceremonia cantada,” in which every piece of music is sung, rather than played by a band or over speakers, during the ceremony. This tradition will give your special day a very personal touch.

Seas the

Cruise ship weddings add the romance of the sea. Olivia and David chose to get married on a cruise ship because they loved the ease of a combined wedding/honeymoon. When they also considered the sumptuous fine dining, top-quality entertainment, fun ship features, and luxury accommodations included in the price of a cruise, they knew the event would be both affordable and unforgettable. In keeping with their relationship style, the couple decided to take a bit of the ‘seriousness’ out of celebrations when they chose Princess Cruises. Dawn Rudisel, Wedding Specialist at Princess says, “They opted for a pirate theme which included pirate props, hats, and party favors. It was very festive!” The event was, by all accounts, a swashbuckling success. Mike and Michelle also chose a Princess cruise for their weddingmoon due to a ship’s accessibility and ease in seeing the world. “The couple were married at sea by the Captain in the ship’s swimming pool. The groom had mobility issues and it was important to him that he walk down the ‘aisle’ and stand with his bride. The Captain performed a beautifully touching ceremony while sitting on the side of the pool,” says Rudisel.

CEREMONY ONBOARD

Princess couples have also been married in unusual locations ranging from lush rainforest gardens to Alaskan glaciers only accessible by helicopter. Princess Cruises offers wedding packages that can be customized with add-on features. There are packages for a ceremony at sea, onshore (beach, garden, glacier) or harborside (ideal for non-sailing guests to attend). A wedding at sea package includes a ceremony performed by the Captain; wedding chapel or library venue; bouquet; wedding cake; sparkling wine; wedding certificate and more. For off-ship events, Princess Cruises partners with Royal Ocean Events who have been arranging weddings for more than 20 years. “Our largest wedding was for 200 people harborside in San Francisco,” Rudisel says.

RING OF EXCHANGE

Most weddings at sea are ceremonial, but if a captain marries you in international waters (about 12-miles offshore), it’s usually legal. “However, we ask each couple to check the laws of their country. If you’re legally married offshore on Princess, your marriage license comes from Bermuda and is recognized in many countries as legal,” says Rudisel. No matter whether you choose to get married on the ship or at an interesting port, cruise weddings are all about ease. When a couple gets married on a cruise, it allows them to host their wedding, then seamlessly segue into a romantic honeymoon while their guests enjoy a vacation too. 4 0 | D E S T I N AT I O N VOW S 2 0 2 0

Wedding Florals Around the World

By Barbara Ramsay Orr

Whether a bride goes for a complex Biedermeier arrangement, or a simple hand-tied bouquet, each location will have a unique selection of site-specific flowers to give the wedding local authenticity. A bride’s flowers for her wedding day are personal, but when the event is a destination wedding, there are particular flowers and greenery that are unique, abundant and more affordable in that location. Also, the ambiance of the destination can help decide the type of wedding flowers. Caribbean:

Beach weddings cry out for colorful bouquets. Heliconia, which lasts long in tropical heat, is popular, as are anthuriums. Orchids are elegant and abundant and hibiscus flowers add punches of color to bouquets and table arrangements.

From the exuberance of the Sangeet to the elaborate rituals, Indian weddings are rich in symbolism and color, a feast for the senses and the soul. Noise and color are the first two words that come to mind when describing weddings in India. On the way to the ceremony, everyone joins a procession and dances to slightly discordant, loud music. The swirls of the women’s clothing create a rainbow of bright colors, and the infectious joy is palpable.

Green Weddings By Valentina Valentini

Incorporating sustainability into your wedding should be at the top of your “I do’s” this season. It doesn’t matter where the wedding is, how lavish or how intimate, there are so many options for a nuptial ceremony that celebrates not only your love for each other but love for our planet, too. From sustainable fashion to travel carbon offset, here is what you can do to make sure your environmental footprint is as small as possible on the big day.

WEDDING DRESSES

WORLD

Conscious Clothing

For wedding dresses, there are online and boutique stores selling eco-conscious wedding and bridesmaids dresses – some even sell suits. Consider shopping secondhand and vintage for both or using a rental service to combat these non-sustainable practices.

Host Your Wedding at an Eco-Friendly Resort

Choosing an eco-friendly hotel for your wedding isn’t as hard as you think. Whether you’re planning a sustainable beach wedding or an eco-conscious celebration in the city, there are venues out there that prioritize sustainable practices. Lots of popular hotel brands, such as Sandos and Barcelo, are taking measures to incorporate sustainability into their offerings. And how about this to top it all off: instead of giving wedding favors to your guests, make a small donation for each of them in their name to a local charity.

The Plane Game

With destination weddings, air travel for family and friends is usually inevitable. For this, carbon offset purchases are a wonderful way to give back to the environment. Our partner Cool Effect has many options with a simple click of the mouse, and either you can purchase these yourself and tell your guests about it, or you can give them the choice of how they’d like to gift you via a carbon offset.

A Historic Spot

Say “I do” while avoiding cookie-cutter options with a historic site. Many sun destination resorts have older areas of the grounds that may look like ruins, but for many couples can be the perfect choice for their wedding day. Aged stone, brick or wood can make for an incomparable setting in contrast with vivid floral arrangements to make the backdrop for a momentous exchange of vows. ©MUNOZ PHOTOGRAPHY

The Classic Choice

The traditional choice of a chapel can be found in a tropical setting. Some resorts feature multi-denominational churches, offering classic sightlines, a place for timeless wedding photographs and the lush environment of a sun destination. Weddings set in gardens, gazebos and outdoor areas make planning easy.

A Memorable Vista

An eye-catching perspective for a ceremony can be found on a terrace. With an unforgettable view from above of palm trees, beach and sea, the bride and groom can be framed with the sky, or with the shades of sunset. With access restricted to wedding guests, there won’t be any photobombing from staff or hotel guests to cause a disruption. Closer to the water, another exclusive alternative is a pier, where the couple can say their vows with views of the vast ocean around them. Many are specifically built for celebrations to offer wedding-only access and a decidedly different walk up the aisle.

And hotels are experts at ensuring a smooth pathway for the bridal party. If rolling hills and a view are on your must-have list, consider a golf course – many have that specific hole that is far from the crowds and provides couples a compromise for an outdoor area on perfectly groomed grass.

Making a Connection

Seek something different to tie the ceremonial knot with the choice of a bridge. This notable architecture is a perfect metaphor for a couple connecting their lives and families. A bridge also offers a memorable view of the ceremony for guests and elevates the couple, so those wedding photographs are unlike anyone else’s.

Embrace the family ties that bind. Add a dash of romantic symbolism to your wedding ceremony by incorporating a tradition that speaks to your cultural roots.

Spanish Fortune

In Spain, a custom called arras once saw the groom giving the bride coins, signifying a promise to support her. This tradition has been updated, with the couple now exchanging 13 coins to show that they will both support the marriage financially. One other monetary convention involves the groom’s tie being cut into pieces and auctioned off to guests to raise funds for the new couple.

Irish Unity

The wrists of the bride and groom are tied together with twine in Ireland, a Celtic tradition called handfasting that symbolizes unity. It springs from a tradition wherein a couple was “bound” together for a year to test their compatibility, after which the marriage took place – or not. This ancient bond of wedlock is believed to be the origin of the phrase “tying the knot.”

Dutch Wishes

SPANISH ARRAS TRADITION

A Wishing Tree is set up near the bride and groom’s table at receptions in the Netherlands, along with paper leaves on which guests write their well-wishes. Newlyweds read out the notes and tie them to the tree with ribbons. Real branches, paper trees, twinkling lights or crystal strands – the art direction is open to interpretation. The Wishing Tree is a great alternative to a guest book and the leaves can later be added to a scrapbook.

Indian Garlands

The jaimala or varmala ceremony is an ancient Hindu wedding tradition that features the bride and groom exchanging garlands of flowers. It symbolizes both an acceptance and respect of one another as well as the union of the two families, a merging of values and customs. Roses, jasmine, and marigolds are the typical flowers used, with colors varying to suit the bridal party attire.

Mayan Symbolism

Couples can add a spiritual and cultural experience to their wedding ceremony on Mexico’s east coastline with a sacred, non-religious Mayan ritual. It involves a shaman calling on the four elements – earth, water, fire, and air – to focus their energies on the bride and groom to help strengthen their love. The ceremony can be conducted in the rainforest, near a sacred cenote or on the beach. Incense purifies the setting, which is augmented with drums, flutes, and dancing.
