Jussi-work − help for violent people An argument does

not need to end up

in violence.

How do you argue with your partner? or with your children? Do you raise your voice? Do you threaten them? Do you hurt them? Do you believe that you have the right to control your partner because they ’belong’ to you? If you think that any of these questions could refer to you, you may need help. It can be difficult to break the habit of being violent or threatening the use of violence.

If you have children, they have to put up with a violent environment even if they are not direct victims or see it first-hand. Your actions have a great impact on how safe your children and other people near you feel. It may be difficult for you to deal with conflict. You may not know how to argue in a constructive way. If your threats or violent behaviour repeatedly make those near you to feel unsafe, this will have an enormous effect on everyone’s wellbeing.

I’ve learned to recognise the signs of potentially dangerous situations. jussi-work may help you if • you have resorted to violence before • you have threatened other people • you have behaved in a controlling manner in a relationship • your arguments tend to get out of control • you have used corporal punishment • your partner has sought refuge from a shelter • your partner is violent.

Talking about things has helped me to understand my partner and myself.

Jussi-work – help for violent people Jussi-work® offers help to people in crisis situations, and is available in many municipalities around Finland. The main aim of Jussi-work activities is to predict dangerous situations and prevent violence.

It is important to recognise the family’s fear and the atmosphere leading up to dangerous situations. Jussi activities deal with the factors behind violent behaviour and

eliminate stress factors that lead to threatening situations. Violence or threat of violence affects everyone around you. You will gain an insight of what arguments and violence looks like from a child’s perspective. Support is more effective if all family members receive help at the same time. You can discuss this option with your worker.

Jussi-work is coordinated by the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters. Counselling sessions are free.
