INDIGENOUS WETLAND
BEACH AND COASTAL POOL ANALYSIS
The site, immersed within the wetland landscapes of the Botany swamp.
Very few indoor pools have been able to offer the PLEASURES OF SWIMMING that can match the primacy and hedonistic experience of swimming in Sydney’s beach and harbour pools. Inspired by our collage of Sydney beach pools, our proposal establishes a playful interaction of natural and constructed landscapes that GRAFTS THE BEACH into the urban pool experience.
Coogee Tamarama TOPOGRAPHIC INSERTION A new geography constructed from the topographic insertion of key water and recreational programs into the site.
EMBEDDED RECREATIONAL LANDSCAPE The newly constructed topography of headlands and valleys embeds a contemporary recreational landscape and pools within the indigenous banksia scrub and wetland landscape.
Clovelly INDUSTRIAL SCALE URBAN TRELLIS A remnant large span roof is elevated over the new landscape, providing an industrial scale urban trellis shading the forecourt and pool landscapes, and containing the large span dry programs of the gymnasium and fitness rooms.

With the wet program located in the introduced headlands and the dry program located in the industrial roofscape, a landscaped groundplane is free to extend across the full footprint of the site.
FREE POOL AREA - BRONTE COASTAL POOL An area for laps is subtly demarcated within a free form oval shaped pool, creating a free pool area that expands the social possibilities and uses of the pool beyond lap swimming
BLEACHER POOL EDGE, BOARDWALK POOL ENTRY, ELEVATED WALKWAY, OUTDOOR DECK – BONDI ICEBERGS On the edge of the pool a landscape of bleachers creates a hedonistic social space for relaxing, reading and sun baking with friends. Two pools are separated by a boardwalk that provides a stair entry into the main pool. The social space of the pool is intensified by a public walkway and elevated deck overlooking the pool.
FREE EDGE, MALABAR POOL
BEACH ENTRY, SOUTH CURL CURL
A more conventional rectangular form is held on three sides of the pool, with the fourth a free form edge adjusted to the topographic edge and rock formations of the pool’s site.
A conventional rectangular lap pool is entered through a substantial beach entry demarcated from the main pool by a low wall, creating a separate but connected gentle beach entry into the main body of water.

Map showing the extent of market gardening and intensified agricultural uses around Botany, to the south of the Gunyama site around 1850. (Drawing taken from Department of Lands, Water Reserve and the Country between Sydney and Botany, 1850)
Map showing the scale and location of Gunyama Park relative to all park landscapes within South Sydney. The map illustrates Gunyama park’s equivalence in scale to a network of local recreational parks, as well as its close proximity to the restorative wetland landscapes of Centennial Park and Eastlakes.
In the 20th Century South Sydney gained its distinctive constructed geography through the prevalence of large span industrial roof scapes gathered along the original water lines of the Botany Swamp. This mapping highlights both the scale and the idiosyncratic footprints of the large span industrial structures typical of the South Sydney Industrial areas.
This idiosyncratic footprint of large span industrial roof scapes is slowly being erased in the postindustrial era by the consistent application of the perimeter block typology as infill for obsolete industrial sites. The perimeter block is applied in plan but not section – creating a perceptible diversity of heights and scale that operate in opposition to the apparent order of the plan. This mapping compares the typical industrial structure footprint in relation to the consistent perimeter block footprint.

STAGING PLAN
The site is located on what was once a rich and diverse landscape of Botany Swamp. Its image and experience will be defined by the essential qualities of this landscape typology. An open woodland will envelop the site via a mix of iconic Angophora and Banksia trees with a uniting low understory of textured indigenous plants.
The community is brought into this woodland setting via sculpted clearings activated by a sequence of destinations
A line of travel that wraps around the pool and weaves its way through the park landscape. Promenade, recreation, fitness and social engagement are brought together via a single circulation and activity spine.
The park is animated by a range of leisure and recreational facilities. These overlapping activities bring the community of all ages together in a park environment that speaks of this place and its role in the greater Sydney context.
A new topography is generated to define spaces and activities within the park. Playful landscapes, pool, architecture and social spaces are framed within this landform.
The last act is to gently rest a new built form that references the sites industrial past on this topography.
