87% GCC CUSTOMERS USING
ONLINE, OFFLINE MIX SHOPPING SAYS OLIVER WYMAN’S RCG PRACTICE
Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm and a business of Marsh McLennan, has bolstered its practice focused on Retail & Consumer Goods in the India, Middle East, and Africa region, combining Oliver Wyman’s global expertise in transformation, development of retail solutions, and more with extensive local experience to provide strategic guidance to retail and consumer businesses aiming to transform and grow.
Oliver Wyman experts note that the retail industry is building rapidly in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly across the GCC thanks to its growing young and affluent population and its high digital consumption rates. The sector is also being transformed by the blurring of boundaries between industries such as retail, entertainment, hospitality, food, banking, and payments. Oliver Wyman analysis shows that consumers in the region are increasingly looking for an omni-channel and personalized experience, with 87% of GCC customers using a mix of online and offline for their shopping needs. Additionally, these consumers have higher expectations for tailored experiences compared to their global counterparts, with a difference of more than 30%.
According to Joe Abi Akl, Head of the India, Middle East, and Africa Retail and Consumer Goods practice at Oliver Wyman: “The parallel merging of offline-, online-, and omnichannels has led to the emergence of ecosystem platform players, and as such the retail sector is experiencing the rise of ‘service clusters’. These clusters are expanding their offerings to cater for as many of the ever-evolving lifestyle needs and wants of customers as possible. The changing customer and landscape mean there’s potentially significant growth
JOE ABI AKL, Head of the India Middle East, and Africa Retail and Consumer Goods practice at Oliver Wymanfor companies – in fact, the ecosystem approach could deliver a revenue pool of USD1 trillion across the MENA region.”
However, to attain consistent and sustainable growth in the industry, RCG organizations must also overcome challenges, Abi Akl notes. These include intense competition and the emergence of disruptive, digitally-driven business models, in addition to a complex regulatory environment at the regional level, and a lack of economic integration across MENA markets – all of which makes it essential for organizations to develop the right strategy for growth.
Industry veteran Abi Akl, who joined Oliver Wyman in January, has a wealth of experience in management consulting, corporate development, investment and portfolio management, incubation, digital and analytics capability building, customer value management, operational excellence, and business management.
KEY AREAS TO FOCUS ON DURING TRAVEL WRITES GABRIELLE INDRIERI AT SAP CONCUR
Global business travel spending has increased by 47% year-on-year as the world recovered from the pandemic. In the Middle East and North Africa, the travel industry benefited from one of the strongest recoveries with arrivals in the Middle East reaching 83% of pre-COVID numbers.
“While this uptick is expected to continue in 2024, businesses need to tap into technology to mitigate current challenges and take advantage of trends,” says Gabrielle Indrieri who recently spoke at the SAP Concur Day conference hosted in Dubai. These benefits are reflected in Concur’s research which reveals that businesses recognize the importance of the relationship-building opportunities that in-person connections enable (46%) and the productivity associated with faceto-face meetings (41%).
To help businesses plan for the future, here are four key areas to focus on when it comes to travel:
DATA IS KING
The way companies gather, and aggregate data is instrumental in shaping their future business travel strategies. Integrating travel, spending, and expense management can be a game changer. Historically, travel data originated from travel agencies, and expense data added another layer to the complexity. Now, the introduction of a new dimension, environmental, sustainable governance (ESG) data, poses a challenge in consolidating these diverse datasets. This, however, presents a significant opportunity for technology, with artificial intelligence (AI) and automation playing pivotal roles.
While businesses are gearing up to incorporate AI into their operations within the next five years, the real silver bullet lies in the quality of the data collected. It’s not just about acquiring the technology but ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the
GABRIELE INDRIERI, Vice President and Managing Director for SAP Concur EMEA Southdata within the specific company context. Preparing the right data sets is crucial, especially with an eye toward the imminent integration of AI. This is relevant not only in general business applications but is particularly pertinent in emerging areas like sustainability data, where companies are now treating it with the same significance as financial data.
CONNECTING THE DOTS
The aspiration to combine sustainability data with spending, business, and employee data is widespread, aiming to create a comprehensive overview. However, the challenge lies in seamlessly connecting this data in one centralized location. This task is not only intricate but also challenging to execute at scale, becoming even more critical as companies expand globally. In essence, the ability to connect data across different clusters becomes a defining factor.
SAUDI ARABIA DOMINATES
GCC’S ONLINE BANKING CONVERSATIONS AT 83% FINDS KPMG SURVEY
KPMG has collaborated with DataEQ on the region’s first-ever GCC banking sentiment index, designed to quantify the experiences and sentiments of consumers within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) banking sector. The report analyzes consumer sentiment towards 20 banks in the GCC by tracking an extensive dataset comprising 3,965,821 X (formerly known as Twitter) posts from 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2023.
Abbas Basrai, Partner, Head of Financial Services and Financial Risk Management at KPMG Lower Gulf, said: “Understanding consumer sentiment in the GCC’s banking sector is a complex, multifaceted undertaking, which has brought to light key areas of significance for consumers and banks alike. The data-led insights gained through this report not only reflect the past year but will likely serve as a critical metric for brands aiming to evolve their strategies in a consumer-centric direction.”
Melanie Malherbe, Chief Commercial Officer at DataEQ, said: “Social data offers organizations an unfiltered view of what consumers really think about them and their competitors. With the rise of social media usage as a servicing channel, specifically in the banking landscape, these platforms house an untapped data pool that can be structured and analyzed in real-time, providing valuable insights into customer experience, product, pricing, and conduct feedback.”Saudi Arabia dominated the conversation within the GCC’s banking sector with an overwhelming 83.3% of total online conversation, demonstrating that Saudi consumers are far more active than their neighbors and more vocal about the banking industry as a whole. Net Sentiment is a composite metric gauging customer satisfaction, derived by subtracting negative sentiment from positive sentiment and adjusting for the total volume of conversation.
ABBAS BASRAI, Partner, Head of Financial Services and Financial Risk Management at KPMGThe survey was not short of negative complaints by consumers online from all countries, with comparisons between two or more banks visible in consumer-shared experiences. Major areas of complaint for consumers overall included service issues, app downtime, and long wait times.
However, while the UAE led with the highest proportion of positive mentions, garnering praise that accounted for 21.1% of its conversation, this was only 0.9 percentage points higher than Qatar, the next country in line. Praise was driven by successful partnerships, strong financial performance, Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives and customer service.
When it came to Net Sentiment, Qatar emerged as the clear leader with a positive Net Sentiment score of 7.8%. A variety of factors contributed to this, including favorable financial performance and the introduction of muchanticipated remittance services. One key driver was the implementation of UPI (Unified Payment Interface) remittance for instant fund transfers to India, a feature highly appealing to expats in the country. Collaborations with third parties to enhance cross-border payments also contributed to Qatar’s high Net Sentiment score.
21% UAE EMPLOYEES NOT SUBMITTING EXPENSES REGULARLY BECAUSE SYSTEM AT WORK IS COMPLEX
More than one in five (21%) of UAE employees and entrepreneurs say they are not submitting their expenses regularly because the filing system at work is ‘too complex’. That’s according to a new report of over 1,400 UAEbased entrepreneurs and employees released by UAE-based leading spend management platform, Pemo, which shows that many people in the UAE are not submitting their expenses regularly because they say they never have time (24%) and they don’t have the admin support (21%). The cumulative cost of an inefficient corporate expense management system amounts to an average of 13,206 AED per year in lost revenue for at least a third of the working force (35%), which many companies and their employees are simply unaware of.
From an employer perspective, incorrectly filed expenses are causing major challenges –especially for the SME market, where businesses simply do not have the resources or the time to be dealing with bottlenecks in administrative processes. Lost receipts, inputting errors and inaccurate submissions are proving to be a big headache for businesses, which as a result, is seeing employers’ attention diverted away from growing and scaling the business because they are spending too much time having to deal with expense management issues. Over time this will impact the productivity of the business, ultimately slowing their ability to thrive. The majority of our frustrations with expenses are down to the time it takes, with more than one in four of us (26%) saying it takes us approximately one hour to do our expenses each month. For 7% of people it takes more than three hours per month. Challenges relating to receipts (26%), manual expense reports (25%) and expense approvals (22%) are just some of the hurdles we have to contend with. As a result, many of us are seemingly forgoing our expenses
which is seeing an accumulation in lost revenue that is building every month. But despite not always doing our expenses, it seems very much a case of ‘business as usual’ for the vast majority of the UAE’s employees; with typical corporate spending taking place on transportation and taxis (15%), hotels and accommodation (13%) and on flights (12%). Many of us spend with our own cash for reimbursement (29%), 25% of us use company petty cash and the same number (25%) use our own company credit card. And whilst a savvy 51% of us do say that we do our expenses frequently, the process for submitting them often seems quite complex. The average number of people who need to approve our spend in the business is two (45% of people say this), with Finance and Accounting, Office Managers and Human Resources being the top three departments who are involved in getting back our cash.
KEARNEY RELEASES REPORT
REVEALING HOW FOOD AND HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS SHOULD WORK TOGETHER
Global management consultancy Kearney released a new report revealing how food and healthcare systems can and should work in unison to unlock funding to create a healthy food future. The report, Food for thought: financing the food system transition, highlights the link between how we produce and process our food, and the health of our planet and its eight billion inhabitants.
COMPOUNDING CRISES: ECOSYSTEM AND HUMAN SICKNESS .
The report highlights the urgency of our current compounding crises. Unhealthy foods drive chronic illnesses, and ecological degradation (soil, air, and water) drives further malnutrition and hunger.
The four leading causes of death are directly linked to diet: stroke, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
We produce enough calories to feed everyone on Earth, but 350 million people still experience acute levels of food insecurity. Transition costs are high, but the cost of inaction is much higher.
The report defines regenerative food systems as outcome-focused, healthy, inclusive, and adapted to local community and crop needs. A regenerative food system can help restore degraded ecosystems; reduce greenhouse gases and sequester carbon; and keep soil healthy, water clean, and foster biodiversity.
A regenerative approach also encourages good human health, from the chemicals used to the ingredient choices made by food manufacturers.
The report finds that while the transition costs toward a regenerative food system are high, the cost of inaction is even higher and includes: $4.3 trillion in health and obesity costs $16.3 trillion in hidden environmental and socioeconomic losses
$3 trillion in economic losses from 4.2 billion
people affected by climate disasters since 2000
PLAYING PAST A STALEMATE
The report advocates for transformative initiatives at scale, moving beyond the current financing stalemate. According to Kearney’s expert interviewees, Wmost stakeholders are waiting for someone else to take the lead. Often, they are not acting at scale because of limited, short-term incentive structures. Furthermore, investment capital is unequally distributed. The report explores how large food, beverage, and agriculture companies can use their influence across the value chain and their financial wherewithal to encourage transformation. They also have a lot to gain, including capitalizing on Kearney Consumer Institute research showing the value of joint health–sustainability products and brands. Companies can also secure supply chains that are poorly prepared for a climate-changed world. Looking at new business value, research finds $4.5 trillion per year could be unlocked during a regenerative transformation. Meanwhile, healthcare agencies, providers, insurers, and government agencies can scale successful “food as medicine” initiatives while, at the same time, driving market demand and premiums for healthy, regenerative food.

Sleep apnea feature on Samsung Health Monitor application receives US FDA authorisation
Samsung Electronics announced that the sleep apnea feature on the Samsung Health Monitor app has received De Novo authorization from the United States Food and Drug Administration. This feature, which detects signs of sleep apnea using a compatible Samsung Galaxy Watch and Phone, was the first of its kind to be authorized by FDA following previous approval by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), announced last October in South Korea. The sleep apnea feature enables users over the age of 22 who have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea over a two-night monitoring period, a common and chronic sleep condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. To utilize the feature, users can simply track their sleep twice for more than four hours within a ten-day period.

Oliver Wyman provides insights into how GenAI is transforming GCC communities
Anew report from Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm and a business of Marsh McLennan, provides insight into the extent to which generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming companies and communities across the GCC. The research reveals that while the use of AI is surging amongst UAE employees, employers need to make greater efforts to train and engage employees about its use. ‘Artificial Intelligence and The Next Frontiers’ is one of six key themes of The World Government Summit, reflecting growing awareness and concern around the area.
While the report demonstrates that the UAE is among the leading countries in the world for deploying generative AI, it also flags up some of the challenges this pioneering role is creating. In total, 74% of UAE employees say that use AI in the workplace every week, while 91% would like their employer to offer training in the use of AI tools in the workplace. In contrast, 84% of UAE employees currently receive training in AI, which is above the global average of 64% for the 16 countries covered by the report, but still shows significant room for improvement. According to Jad Haddad, Head of Digital IMEA, Oliver Wyman: “With the UAE taking a leadership position in AI, it is vital for employers to keep pace with the technology and understand exactly how it impacts their company, and how to best integrate it into their processes and practices. This research underscores the readiness of employees to utilize AI, while also alerting employers of the need to take control of the situation to ensure AI works for their organization, and by extension for employees, customers, and for society as a whole.” The potential repercussions of employees using AI without the right training are serious, particularly in terms of security. Indeed, 94% of UAE employees who are using AI say that they may have exposed proprietary data while using public generative AI tools, posing an ongoing risk to their organisation.
AI may also impact staff retention, with the increasing use of AI in the workplace
apparently changing employee behaviour. Some 25% of UAE employees report they are jobseeking due to AI disruption.
The research also revealed that employees are open to using AI as a tool when changing jobs, with 41% of UAE respondents saying they are open to AI screening their job applications, signalling potential shifts in the future of hiring.
Also, more than half of UAE employees (52%) say they would prefer working with an AI colleague over a human one, indicating that staff could respond well to a significant increase in the use of AI in the workplace.
