Gerd

Claiming that there is no one like a cer tain person may seem like a cliché or an extremity. But, Tatiana Shabelnik is not your average fashion designer. There are many things that set her apar t from the norm. She grew up under the Soviet rule and she has spent 25 years in the education. Her rich roots and life, only adds to the uniqueness that she bring s to her brand and designs. With this, her journey in fashion captivates us as boldly as the colors she uses. We talk to her about her latest collection: En Vie: TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW COLLECTION – WHAT INSPIRED YOU? Tatiana Shab elnik: O n March 19, 2 015, I showc ase d my F/ W 15’ collec tion with St yle Fashion Week in Los Angeles . At the same time, Ava J. H olmes showed her Elephantasia project. She asked me to contribute a design to the project, which was a collaboration between 13 international designers to raise awareness and funds for the protection of African Elephants. In May 2015, I designed a dress for the Elephantasia project. It inspired me to base my latest collec tion on the same theme: animals and nature. My signature dress for this collec tion is a “Monkey Dress”. I was born in the Year of the Monkey and this year, 2016, is my year. Both dresses were hand-painted by a ver y talented Belarusian batik painter, Zina Fediunina. EN: YOU’RE KNOWN FOR YOUR VIBRANT USE OF COLOUR. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? TS: Not long ago, I asked a friend why most of the cars on the roads in America are in shades of grey, black – neutral colours … and his response was: “ Bec ause it ’s safe.” Colour means a lot to me an d I am not afraid of bright colours . Nor am I interes te d in “safe” colour choices . My signature use of ora n ge refle c t s enth u sia sm , wa rmth a n d ha p pin e ss w hile als o c a pturin g a sen se of en erg y a n d ch e er f uln e ss . A s a S oviet emigrant , my sele c tion of colours embodies the qualities of risk-taking, physical confidence, vivacious competition, and independence. AR: AND WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE WOMEN THAT WEARS THEM? TS: It’s about being unafraid of taking a stand and making a statement. AR: WHERE DID YOUR LIKING FOR BOLD COLOUR COME FROM? TS: My upbringing in the Soviet Union and my love for arts. My good friend, Jeri Ferris, wrote about the colour red that inspires me: “Red. A significant word. In Russian, it is ‘krasny,’ which means both the colour red and the concept of beaut y. So Red S quare, Krasnaya Ploshchad, means both red and beautiful, and it truly is both.” (http://w w w.jerichaseferris.com/russia.html) EN: COLOUR IS LINKED TO BEAUT Y AND YOU PICK MODELS THAT ARE DIVERSE IN LOOKS. TS: My line is entitled, “CONTR AST.” And, I consider myself a child of the world: I have friends from all over and I design for dif ferent cultures, races, an d nationalitie s . Fashion unite s all dif feren ce s . I always make sure that I rep re sent all race s an d nationalitie s through my mo dels on runways an d editorials. AR: I LOVE THE WAY YOU THINK! YOU’RE FROM MINSK, BELARUS –WHAT DO YOU IMPART FROM YOUR CIT Y TO THIS COLLECTION? TS: I work with a contra s t of contemp orar y Los A n gele s glam o ur combin e d with th e an ce s tral pa s t of rural B elaru s . My de sign s have de ep ro ot s in s t yle s of B elorussian folk dre sse s from my yo uth b ut with a m o dern t wis t! My colle c tion also take s from th e contra s t of p over t y an d wealth in th e world – the p s ychologic al p ower of vibrant clothing during tough p olitic al, so cial, an d economic time s (where I come from). This is reflec te d in the details and craf tsmanship of my designs. EN: WHAT SORT OF MATERIAL DO YOU USE FOR YOUR DESIGN? TS: I work with natural fibers—silks and chif fons. I love the flow of light fabrics and the feel of them. It is also a reflection of freedom for me. EN: DO YOU HOPE THAT PEOPLE FEEL A SENSE OF FREEDOM WHEN THEY VIEW YOUR WORK? TS: I want my admirers to feel unique, independent, and free from any limitations dictated by the customs of dif ferent countries. I hope they will feel a connection with people ever y where—that we are all citizens of the world. EN: YOU GREW UP IN A COMMUNIST STATE . HOW HAS THAT INFLUENCED YOUR VIEW ON FASHION? TS: I think, due to the limited choices in clothing , p eople had to learn how to make thing s themselves if they wanted to lo ok dif ferent . My mom an d grandmother are my big gest inspirations in life. My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was small. My mom showed me how to sew when I was a teenager. EN: I’M SURE THEY’RE PROUD TO SEE WHERE YOU ARE NOW IN FASHION. HOW HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN? TS: Exciting! I truly enjoy the process. You never know what the next day brings or which media outlet would notice and cover your stor y. I work hard with building my brand. With a limited budget, I’m doing ever y thing myself. I put endless hours af ter my full-time job at the college but my friends are helping me tremendously too! Even though, it is ver y busy – I enjoy the moment and process of creating art. I am not in a rush for millions. A true artist enjoys art more than dollar signs. EN: WELL SAID! THE PROCESS BEHIND THE ART IS VERY IMPORTANT AS WELL – WHAT IS YOURS? I come up with an idea for a collec tion, buy the fabric s, do the sketches them, and then send the sketches and fabric to my amazing sample makers in Belarus . All of o ur communic ation , until the garment is rea dy, is done thro ugh S k yp e . I also fly to Belarus on ce p er year for ab o ut three week s an d manage to produce some collections while there. Thank you, Tatiana.

“Old is G old”, the age old saying has become the latest mantra th e se days . It a c tually sen ds u s ba ck to th e fla shba ck of o ur lives! Granny’s cute little smile with rug ged clothes along with the glasses and the cotton pant s are now creating a throwback in o ur live s . T im e s a re cha n gin g fa s t , valu e s a re ero din g b ut I think at some point Grandma's experiences leave a mark on our genes. Th e pa s t ha s b e en in spirin g th e fa shion world for quite s om e tim e , a s wom en th e se days a re goin g for retro fa shion with a bit of m o dernization . ‘ V intage’ is th e word we n ormally h ea r th e se days , w hich de s crib e a s n ot n e ce ssa rily old , b ut a re p ro du ce d in s u ch a fa shion that th e overall lo ok give s a n antique impression . So Ladies! Whenever you find a relatively old o ut f it in yo ur closet , get ha p py b e c a u se yo u ju s t got yo ur hands washed in treasure. M ore than a few tim e s , I've b e en told that I have a c a s ual-girl lo ok; that with my dimple s a n d b ea ut y ma rk , I sh o uld've b e en b orn in this golden era as vintage won’t go with me b ut few of th em kn ew that a s m u ch a s I love vintage s t yle an d take that a s a complim ent , th o ugh , I've b e en on e to wish I'd b e en b orn in a n ea rlier de c a de . I m ea n , s ure , wom en got to live thro ugh s om e enviable fa shion tren ds thro ugh o ut th e 2 0 th centur y, but I wouldn't definitely lose a chance to hang out in 50’s. And with that awe comes the stark realization that, even though I'm n ot in ept w h en it com e s to dre ssin g myself, I will n ever, ever have the out fit-b uilding ins tinc t an d s t yle confidence that my G ra n dma n ever faile d to display (n ot to m ention I don' t have a cce ss to ma ny of th e b ea utif ul vintage pie ce s of th e de c a de s sh e live d thro ugh). B ut that do e sn' t m ean sh e c a n' t ser ve a s inspiration to me. I'm p ret t y s ure ma ny la die s o ut th ere wo uld have ob se ssion with p uf f-sle eve s weater s . Also, there used to be one long knit ted cloth but I have no idea if this robe like thing was inten de d to b e worn o ut side th e h om e , b ut I ab s olutely love the wrap style, stripes-and-floral print combo, and contrasting cuf f s . It co uld b e either a wide -leg pant s or a maxi skir t , b ut I would argue that it looks fabulous either way,

Fur collar, Coat, Jewelr y, Gloves, Spats, Purse – My Grandma’s Closet vintage Earrings – Barrera Heels – BCBG

especially with t wo -tone shoes . Talking about old clothes, I would give almost any thing to have the monogrammed s weater, especially love how it looks with the black midi skirt and heels. I remember Grandmother kept it classic with a black dress and piles of gold accessories. Whether or not you are able to discover it, ever y vintage garment comes with a stor y. Little is more exciting than being able to trace the origin of a garment. Even in c ase s when we c annot f in d any details b eyon d where we o urselve s c ame across a piece, it take s only a drop of imagination to create th ose sp ecial s torie s o ur self. Vintage and antique clothing is seeped in myster y and histor y, and learning or dreaming it is half the charm of wearing it. Strapless linen jumpsuit with ruf fled sweetheart neckline and checkered newsboy cap could be seen as the one of the most fashionable outfit. Another vintage style which I would want to steal would be midi-length black dress, high heels and hood-scar f thing y, which would I guess looks nothing lesser than a movie star! This ‘epitome of womanhood’ has undergone refurbishing over the years and ever y style does justice to the aforementioned title as it represents the socio- cultural renovations to a large ex tent, as well. We all know histor y repeat s it self, but in this case it is the modernized of f-beat adaptation of retro feature which has been the driving force behind the success of fusion fashion. It is basically histor y, and art, and the stories of those who have come before us. Owning and wearing vintage clothing is a way of keeping those people and those histories and that artistr y alive. At the end of the day, to wear vintage clothing is to be wrapped in romance. So ladies! Let’s keep the spirit alive and revive the golden days!
