y friend Anne recently began raising bees. She set up three hives with guidance from tutorials on Youtube, bought 30,000 bees over the internet and had them delivered via UPS. This is an undertaking I personally would never have signed up for, but Anne has foresight and is willing to put in the work for the eventual reward. “Honey bees are important to our food source,” she’d said. This past weekend she asked if I would like to help harvest her first batch of honey. The idea of getting stung didn’t appeal to me, but I was willing to help my friend. The process is actually quite amazing. Pulling the honeyfilled frames from the hives, and once inside the extractor, churning a crank until the honey is removed, then watching the golden liquid flow into a bucket to be strained, and finally pure, honey is poured into Ball jars to be given away to family and friends. Did you know that honey bees have to gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey? They visit 50-100 flowers on each collection trip. And in her lifetime, one honey bee creates, at most, 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey! This is amazing to me. Think of the number of honey bees it takes to make a quart of honey. They all work together tirelessly, day in and day out to create the only food that is produced by an insect that is eaten by man. The point here, people, is teamwork. Working together, is the best way to secure the best outcome. The honey bee team has a mission. The team has specific tasks for each individual. The team needs a leader and followers, but each is crucial to the success of the team. No one is more important than the next. So next time you think about going rogue, think about the honey bee, who knows that teamwork is crucial to the success of any endeavor.

rior to leaving the military, Dan looked up the U.S. Dept. of Labor and Veterans Affairs websites to find a company with a Machinist apprenticeship program in the Michigan area, and called Sebewaing Tool and Engineering Co. about the possibility of starting an apprenticeship with them. Dan was successfully able to transfer his military skills as a machinist in the Marine Corps to a career in manufacturing at Sebewaing. Dan feels strongly that obtaining a Machinist Apprenticeship Certificate of Completion from the Department of Labor (and additional education in the Manufacturing Industrial Technology field) offers a promising future for him and his family. Sebewaing Tool and Engineering Co. has been a DOL- certified Apprenticeship program for over 50 years, and provide apprenticeships in four skilled trades: Machinist, Tool and Die Maker, Machine Repairman and Welder. The company believes that Veterans understand that building a career in skilled trades requires commitment and hard work, and they are willing to put in the time and effort to succeed. And, those Veterans tend to be leaders that advance in the company, and work well with employees and their supervisors. Overall, Sebewaing considers it a “win-win” situation when they have the

Making a Career in Manufacturing by Elka Torpey
“In what’s becoming a digital world, there’s still a demand for tangible goods,” says Brian Herrick of Baltimore, Maryland. “I like the tangible aspect of manufacturing. I like watching how things are made. You don’t get that in any other industry.”
H
errick should know. He has worked in several manufacturing industries and sees career potential for people who develop the right skills. “Manufacturing can be a great training ground, where you can learn how things are done and take things through production,” he says. “Once you develop that skill set, you gain competencies you can take anywhere.” There were 264,000 job openings in manufacturing in March 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Although BLS projects employment to decline in most manufacturing industries between 2012 and 2022, future job openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who are retiring. In addition, the pay is good: BLS data show that manufacturing workers often earn more overall than workers in other industries. Industry experts say there’s a need for workers with the right skills in manufacturing. Employers are having trouble filling jobs for machinists and maintenance technicians, among other skilled trades. “We have manufacturers calling us weekly, wanting to hire our students,” says Dave Lynnes, president of a welding school in Fargo, North Dakota. Job openings are expected for welders and other production workers—but also for workers outside of production, such as biomedical engineers, dispatchers, and truck drivers.
A Changing Industry
Manufacturing has the most jobs of any goods-producing industry in the United States, more than 12 million of them in 2013. The manufacturing industry processes materials to make all kinds of products, including food, cars, and circuit boards. Many manufacturing jobs are still in large factories, plants, and mills. But bakeries, custom tailors, and other small businesses are part of manufacturing, too.
Growth
BLS data show mostly growth in manufacturing employment from 1939 until 1979, when employment peaked at about 19.4 million jobs. Manufacturing growth was especially strong in the 1950s and 1960s as incomes rose along with demand for American-made products. Employment generally held steady in manufacturing through the 1990s, even as technology began to lead to increased productivity. And goods manufactured outside the United States were starting to compete with those produced domestically.
Decline
Between 2000 and 2010, manufacturing employment declined by almost 6 million jobs—about one-third of its total. The low cost of producing goods abroad led many companies to move their manufacturing

operations to other countries. And like many industries, manufacturing employment was hit hard during the recent recession (December 2007 through June 2009).
Recovery
“We’ve seen 4 straight years of job growth in manufacturing,” says Carrick.

The manufacturing industry began adding jobs in 2010, as the economy began recovering from the effects of the recession. But the nature of some of these jobs has changed, with fewer jobs on an assembly line and more jobs running computers or machines. In addition, some manufacturers are moving production back to the United States as they factor in variables such as increasing labor costs abroad, the high cost of transporting goods, and the risks associated with foreign manufacturing. “Every week we’re hearing about a new company building a plant in the United States,” says Gardner Carrick of the Manufacturing Institute in Washington, D.C. “We’ve seen 4 straight years of job growth in manufacturing.” But employment still has not returned to pre-recession levels, and it is unlikely to do so as technology has eliminated the need for some types of workers.
Projected changes
BLS projects manufacturing employment to lose about 550,000 jobs by 2022. In fact, of the 77 industries within manufacturing, only 19 are projected to add jobs. And most of these industries are not expected to reach their levels of employment from the previous decade. Although many of these industries are projected to have slower-than-average employment growth, a few are projected to increase at relatively fast rates. For example, employment growth in two industries—cement and concrete product manufacturing and veneer, plywood, and engineered wood product manufacturing—is expected to be about triple the average for all workers. Architectural and structural metals manufacturing employment is expected to nearly double.
Industrial machinery mechanics are projected to add about 21,600 manufacturing jobs—more than any other occupation in this group—by 2022. The fastest growing manufacturing industries are directly related to construction, an industry that is projected to add many jobs over the 2012–22 decade. As construction activity expands, manufacturing industries that supply materials for construction projects are also expected to grow.

The manufacturing process
Although products are made differently, many of them go through a similar manufacturing process that involves a variety of workers. Smaller manufacturers may have one or two workers doing some or all of these production tasks. For example, the owner of a small candy shop may develop recipes, make candy, fix equipment, transport ingredients, manage the store, answer the phone, and sell products to customers. The occupations highlighted in each worker group that follows are examples of some of the many types of manufacturing jobs. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics workers are often involved at the earliest stages of manufacturing when they are creating or improving a product’s design. These workers may also help to design the machines, robots, and other technologies used in factories. As manufacturing innovation continues, a few of these occupations—including statisticians and biomedical engineers— are projected to add some jobs between 2012 and 2022. Industrial engineers and mechanical engineers were among the highest paying occupations in manufacturing in May 2013. Median annual wages for these workers in manufacturing were $78,690 and $77,830, respectively—more than double the $35,080 median wage for all workers. Production workers help to make a product according to its design specifications, doing tasks such as operating machinery, overseeing product quality, or packaging and preparing finished goods for shipping. Although many production tasks have been automated, some of the largest manufacturing occupations in May 2013 were in this group: first-line supervisors of production and operating workers; inspectors, testers, sorters, samplers, and weighers; machinists; and team assemblers. In addition to having significant current employment, machinists are projected to add about 18,500 jobs in manufacturing between 2012 and 2022. Other occupations that are expected to increase manufacturing employment over the decade include metal and plastic computer-controlled machine tool operators (19,100 jobs) and welders (9,000 jobs). Installation, maintenance, and repair workers keep the production equipment and machinery, as well as the facility itself, functioning properly. As a result of the increased use of automated processes, maintenance and repair work of machinery remains an important component of manufacturing. Industrial machinery mechanics are projected to add about 21,600 manufacturing jobs— more than any other occupation in this group—by 2022. These jobs are expected to be in several manufacturing industries, including motor vehicle parts manufacturing, architectural and structural metals manufacturing, and pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing. Core Facets of a Professional Presence
Page 9
by Neil Kokemuller
ALCON Research, Ltd. Alcon Research produces a broad spectrum of ophthalmic medical devices and instruments. We seek dedicated individuals who share our vision of diversified specialization in the field of ophthalmology.
P
rofessionalism has a somewhat different meaning from one industry or career to the next. However, several core aspects of projecting a professional presence remain constant in most employment settings. Recognizing these elements and managing your image contribute to job success, promotions and high earning potential.
Dress and Grooming
Your dress and grooming are the most important factors in creating a positive first impression and maintaining a strong professional image. Though the clothes vary by industry, maintaining a quality, ironed look for your wardrobe is expected. Other things you should do to maximize your visual impression include combing your hair, shaving and covering up visible tattoos.
Poise and Confidence
Poise is courage under pressure. Most occupations have periods of time where you face a sense of urgency or pressure to perform. A poised professional remains calm, shows discipline in decision-making and actions, and conveys stability during moments of pressure or stress. A confident demeanor conveys confidence to managers, colleagues and clients. Showing confidence in your abilities and work improves your chances of gaining favor with each of these stakeholders.
Positive Facial Expressions
A person’s facial expressions tell a story even without spoken words. A friendly smile when greeting someone creates warmth, comfort and rapport. In sales, for instance, get a prospect on your side with an engaging smile. A frown demonstrates a lack of confidence, enthusiasm or enjoyment in your work. Such negative facial expressions contribute to toxic work environments and deter repeat business from customers.
Entrance and Carriage
The way you “carry yourself” communicates important messages about your character. Posture, stride and pace, along with your facial expression affect how others perceive you. A person who “lights up a room” upon entering commands attention from coworkers or customers. A positive initial impression impacts the overall perception others have of you. Walk talk with a firm, confident stride.
Body Language and Gestures
Other body language movements and gestures affect your presence as well. Some habits, such as rocking back and forth, crossing your arms and avoiding eye contract may cause a person to perceive you as nervous, reserved, lacking confidence or disinterested. Instead, show engagement with eye contact, a calm presence, and natural movements and hand gestures.
Conclusion
Your appearance, poise, facial expressions, entrance and carriage, demeanor and gestures all communicate messages to others whether you intend them to or not. Recognizing how you project to others in these areas allows you to make adjustments and improve your presence. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

SCHEDULE A HIRING AUTHORITY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Schedule A is a hiring authority that enables agencies to speed up the process of hiring individuals with disabilities. Schedule A helps qualified individuals with disabilities to secure jobs that are matched to their skills and abilities. By utilizing this authority to fill a position, an agency can opt out of using the traditional—and sometimes lengthy— competitive hiring process. It is to your advantage to ensure the hiring agency is aware that you are eligible; however, Schedule A appointment does not guarantee employment.
Eligibility for Schedule A
ICMA-RC, a financial services leader in public sector employee retirement products and services. ICMA-RC provides retirement saving and planning services for more than 9,000 government employers nationwide and more than one million city, state and county participant accounts. ICMA-RC associates are dedicated to our mission of helping public employees build retirement security. We are proud to serve those who serve us! To learn about current career opportunities throughout the United States, visit:
www.icmarc.org
In order to receive a Schedule A appointment, you must: Be qualified for the job you are applying to (have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the required duties) Demonstrate proof of disability Proof of disability can be satisfied with a simple letter stating that you have a disability from your doctor, a licensed medical professional, a licensed rehabilitation professional, or any entity that issues or provides disability benefits. The letter does not need to detail your medical history, or your need for an accommodation.
Applying with Schedule A
As an individual with a disability, you may apply online through USAJOBS.gov or an agency’s website. Once you find a job opportunity that you are eligible for and interested in, you should get your resume and references in order and obtain proof of your disability before you apply. In addition, you should reach out to the appropriate person within the agency for assistance in applying, typically the agency’s Selective Placement or Disability Employment coordinator. Finally, to ensure your application is considered under Schedule A, include your Schedule A proof of disability letter along with your resume and any other documents required in the job announcement.
DISCLOSURES BY PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Disclosure, or sharing information about your disability with others, by law, is a personal decision that individuals must make for themselves. An interviewer is prohibited from asking you questions about your disability that are not relevant to job responsibilities. An interviewer should ask questions about your qualifications and how you can perform the essential functions of the job. During a job interview, you should present yourself in a positive manner, emphasizing your abilities and assets. You are not required to talk about your disability during an interview.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Agencies are required to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified applicants and employees with disabilities. Types of accommodations include assistance during an interview, modifications of position responsibilities or work environment, opportunities to telework and other adjustments to ensure you enjoy all benefits of employment. To receive accommodations at work or in the application process, information about your disability must be disclosed and shared with the relevant authorities, such as the agency’s Selective Placement coordinator. Procedures to request accommodation may be posted on an agency’s website or included in employee handbooks.

7 Secrets of Highly Diverse Companies by Sharon Florentine
Diversity’s a major issue in IT, but some companies just seem to ‘do diversity’ better than others. What’s their secret? THEY USE TECHNOLOGY EFFECTIVELY
There’s plenty of recruiting software solutions aimed at helping companies attract and hire a more diverse workforce; one such option is Entelo and its Entelo Diversity solution. Entelo Diversity works in conjunction with a company’s existing suite of recruiting and hiring tools, which leverage big data, analytics and social media data to screen and source candidates. “Entelo Diversity is a Web crawler that uses a proprietary algorithm to aggregate profiles from publicly available information,” says Entelo CEO Jon Bischke. Its solution uses what’s already indexed to create a more indepth profile of a candidate, and then look at certain data points that could signal whether candidates are male, female, black, Hispanic or a veteran. For example, is the candidate a member of the NAACP? That could signal they’re African-American. Or, if the candidate was a member of a sorority during her college years, the assumption it’s a female.
THEY MAKE EDUCATION AND TRAINING A PRIORITY
Most employees, in any industry, attend at least one diversity-focused training in their career. But one-off seminars and day-long continuing education classes are often forgotten as soon as attendees walk out the door. The trick is integrating diversity into the daily experience at work, and helping employees develop critical thinking around issues that affect them, their co-workers and the business as a whole. “A lot of our training goes into helping clients apply diversity awareness and apply that on a daily basis in their organization, make it sustainable,” says Rafael Solis, cofounder, senior vice president of product and chief marketing officer of collaborative learning solutions platform Braidio. One exercise they use

Companies that succeed in diversity recruiting and hiring know that diverse candidates aren’t just going to show up on their doorstep; the company has to make an extra effort. in trainings is to have attendees pretend they’re seated on an airplane with an empty seat beside them. Then, participants are shown a series of pictures of different potential “neighbors” and they are asked to notice how they react to certain people. This, in turn, allows Braidio to expand on that -- from race, gender, ethnicity, age, dress—into their own biases and assumptions and how they might or might not bring that into workplace interactions with peers, customers and with management.
THEY CONSTANTLY QUESTION THEIR OWN ASSUMPTIONS AND BIASES
Companies that “do” diversity well aren’t afraid to examine and acknowledge their own preconceived notions, assumptions and biases, and then work to address those if they’re negatively impacting diversity in the workplace. These organizations are continually asking themselves if they’re unconsciously excluding potentially great talent because of unconscious bias, and then looking at what they can change internally to rectify those blind spots. Charles Eaton, CEO of the Creating IT Futures Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CompTIA, which aims to increase
Page 12
equal opportunity employment journal
July 2016
diversity in all areas of the IT industry, shared a particular anecdote about one particular client who was very concerned that he wasn’t hiring many women -- this client ran a small managed service provider and was very engaged in hiring more female engineers. When Eaton’s team started looking at his interview process, it turned out that the first question he was asking everyone in an interview was, “What kind of gaming rig have you built?” It’s human nature to gravitate toward what’s familiar, and to repeat what’s been successful in the past; seeing your biases and understanding their impact on diversity is a crucial factor for success. “In this case, he’d hired a few very successful, very high performing male engineers who happened to be avid gamers. They both had their own custom-built gaming rigs at home; this person had made the assumption that, to be a great engineer, you had to have this interest, this skill set, and wasn’t aware until we talked about it how negatively it was impacting talent acquisition,” says Eaton.
THEY WORK HARD AT BEING DIVERSE
Unconscious biases, the IT skills gap, incredible competition for talent, cultural mismatches, a lack of diverse applicants, a homogenous pipeline—working towards diversity is hard work. Companies that succeed in diversity recruiting and hiring know that diverse candidates aren’t just going to show up on their doorstep; the company has to make an extra effort. “You must actively search for and recruit from underrepresented groups. Are you looking into the local chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers? Do you have a corporate partnership with Women in Technology? Look hard at local chapters of these organizations. It’ll require more effort and energy, but that’s what it takes,” says Eaton.
THEY RECOGNIZE A BROADER DEFINITION OF DIVERSITY
For enterprise training solutions platform Mindflash, an emphasis on unorthodox leadership is where diversity starts, and that “outside the box” mentality filters through the whole organization. Diversity here means not just race, sex or education, but work experience and background, too, says Mindflash CEO Donna Wells. Two of the company’s recent hires include a former restaurant manager and a professional cyclist—not exactly the prototypical IT background. Skills can be taught; attitude and demeanor, communication, teamwork and negotiation. Those are much more endemic and harder to teach “We’ve learned we can have great success, great outcomes by focusing on attitude and soft skills during the interview process. We look for passion, discipline, innovative thinking, problem-solving skills and teamwork, and then we know we can train for the rest of the tech skills,” Wells says.
THEY GET BUY-IN AND COMMITMENT FROM THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION
It’s great when a company’s CEO and executive leadership makes a public commitment to increasing diversity; when they release their current internal diversity statistics, admit they have ‘a lot of work to do’ and vow to do better. But that kind of organizational change must be echoed through the entire organization, or it’s just lip service. “Emphasizing diversity has to be intentional, and there has to be buy-in from the entire organization. It can’t just be the CEO -- there’s not enough transparency in that office for accountability. It can’t just be a grassroots effort, because of that same lack of accountability and a chance their hiring preferences will be overruled,” says Eaton.
THEY PUT MEASUREMENTS AND METRICS IN PLACE TO TRACK SUCCESS
To solve the accountability problem, companies like Pinterest, Facebook and Intel have put specific initiatives, metrics and rules for diversity hiring in place -- like the Rooney Rule, which requires at least one woman and one underrepresented minority must be interviewed for every open position, or for every senior position, at a company. A key part of maintaining diversity and measuring the success of such programs is data and accountability. Programs like these are a good first step. Braidio uses metrics to track engagement for their classes, and also success and completion. They offer toolkits for attendees that will help them directly and immediately apply what they have learned in their day-to-day work life. “All of these are ways to make sure diversity isn’t just an afterthought, that it’s front-ofmind for everyone, every day,” says Solis. Giving Yourself an Edge at Work
D
oing your job well is the most important contribution you can make to your organization and to your chances for advancement. But most enterprises in today’s competitive world need to constantly improve to remain profitable or effective. The experience and insights of the workforce are a valuable source for those improvements. Here are some things to keep an eye out for as potential opportunities to contribute to needed solutions: Failing equipment Bottlenecks in processes Complaints from customers Frequent or inconclusive meetings Grumbling among coworkers Unequal distribution of work or rewards
None of these is a guaranteed opportunity to shine. There may be good reasons why they exist; they may have been studied before and the solutions may be beyond the control of management. But some will be ripe for action, and even noting them and suggesting solutions will be a mark of alertness, insight, and motivation. How can one best prepare for identifying and taking advantage of these opportunities? The most basic method is continuous learning. Learn all you can about your organization, its missions, ideals, goals, and major activities. Keep up with technological developments in your field or industry so that you’ll be able to recommend new or different equipment, processes, or management techniques. For this it may be necessary to take courses offered by your organization or by outside educational or training institutions. You need to be a team player. You should offer to help an overburdened coworker and volunteer for extra assignments if you can handle them without detriment to your regular work. You should look for things that waste your group’s time or harm morale and think of ways to alleviate them. You should learn as much as you can about the jobs of colleagues in other organizations so that you can work more effectively with them. As important as what you do is what you don’t do. Don’t create the impression that you’re an overly eager beaver bent only on getting ahead. If suggestions are requested at meetings, offer them freely, crediting others for ideas you may have picked up from them. If you are volunteering unsolicited recommendations, meet with the boss privately so that you won’t be seen as upstaging him. Be generous with your praise and appreciation of your coworkers and don’t join the critical whispers about any of them or the boss. Criticism should be expressed one-to-one or in open meetings and always focused on positive solutions. Which brings us full circle to the most important thing you can do to get that edge: do your job well. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

here would our nation be without our military personnel who have put their lives on the line to fight for and protect us? Our nation would not be the mighty power it is without them. They deserve our deepest gratitude and sincerest support. Donating time and money to veteran organizations is a great way to show appreciation; however, if you own a business in the healthcare field, there is an even greater way to help support our men and women who have served our country in the military. Whether your healthcare business is small or large, the benefits of hiring veterans are numerous and far-reaching. The training our military personnel receive makes them excellent employees.
Loyalty and Dedication
by M. Seipel
The loyalty veterans have developed while in the military goes deep, especially those who have been in combat. They were not only taught loyalty and dedication to each other in training, but they lived it in the field. The bond between troops who have fought next to each other is seldom broken. This loyalty and dedication carries over into civilian life with their families, friends, and place of employment.
Teamwork
patients’ lives are at stake. When one member of the team does not carry their weight, it can have an adverse impact on the other team members. Veterans have been thoroughly trained to carry their own weight and work with their comrades to complete the duties they were assigned.
Productivity
In the military, disciplinary measures were taken if you did not meet the goal, in order to teach them that goals are set for a purpose and need to be met. This is another positive trait needed in the healthcare field that has been ingrained in a veteran. Motivated, productive people are what it takes to get all the work done in a timely manner; veterans know how to do this with determination and tenacity, and won’t stop until the goal is met.
Working Under Intense Pressure
Veterans who worked in the medical field beyond their training in the classroom learned quickly how to work under incredible pressure. Circumstances in any area of the medical field can be overwhelming during combat. Whether trained as a nurse, a doctor, a medical pilot, or any other job, veterans had to know exactly what to do at a moment’s notice. This skill is a valuable asset in civilian healthcare facilities.
As any employer knows, employees who work well as part of a team Leadership are indispensable. This is especially true in the healthcare field where Some people are born leaders and some are made into leaders; either

way, they both need to be taught how to be proper leaders. Veterans who worked in the medical field while in the military have been taught the best leadership skills possible. One of the first things they were taught is that in order to be a great leader you have to be a great follower; in other words, you have to know how to take orders and submit to those in authority before you can expect anyone to take orders from you. They were also taught how to anticipate future issues and how best to deal with them. These two aspects of veterans’ training is a boon for any healthcare facility.
Communication
Business owners know that excellent communication skills is one of the fundamental things to look for in an employee. In the healthcare world, bad communication can result in patients getting hurt, being neglected, and may possibly lead to their death. Veterans have been trained to communicate respectfully, honestly, and also openly when they know something is wrong. In the military, if they let things go unattended or undone, they were disciplined. Even when an error occurred that was not their fault, they were trained to do everything in their power to correct it, or bring it to their superior’s attention for them to take care of. In any healthcare facility, noticing errors and correcting them is essential, not only for the welfare of the patient, but to avoid legal issues as well.

is a skill that needs to be taught or channeled correctly. Veterans working in the medical field during battle have had that skill honed to perfection in many cases. Having a “sixth sense” about how to deal with many medical issues that suddenly arise while in combat has saved countless lives over the years. This skill takes time and experience to develop, and medical field veterans have acquired the experience while serving their country. To save time developing a high level of intuition in an employee, hiring a veteran with experience in the medical field is the answer.
Training and Education
The medical training and education military personnel get while in service is outstanding, thorough, state-of-the-art, and easily transferable into civilian life. If you are a healthcare facility dealing with special fields of medicine and would like to hire a veteran, the VA will oftentimes pay for a veteran to get the special training they need.
Tax Credits
There are numerous tax credits available to employers who hire veterans. WOTC (Work Opportunity Tax Credit) has information about tax credits for employers on the IRS website. There are certain qualifications and forms to fill out, but the effort is well worth it. he top performers in our review are registered nurses, the Gold Award winner; radiation therapists, the Silver Award winner; and dental hygienists, the Bronze Award winner. Here’s more on choosing a medical career that meet your needs, along with detail on how we arrived at our ranking of 10 careers. Choosing a career can be daunting. Whether you’re heading to college for the first time or thinking of returning to school to train for a new job, there are a wide variety of careers available in the medical field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical industries are expected to see five million new jobs over the next decade. If the idea of working in a medical field appeals to you but you don’t want to return to school for several years, many of the healthcare jobs in our review require only an associate degree. Other important considerations to evaluate when you start looking for a medical career include the salary and the number of available jobs in the field. If you’re interested in careers that require You may think that if you ch more schooling, read our review of advanced medical careers. You can only have a few options of w also read our articles about medical wide variety of workplac careers to get a clearer idea about what to expect when start down the path toward a new career.
What to Consider When Choosing a Medical Career
In addition to being a growing industry, careers in medicine often have higher than average salaries, opportunities for specialization and advancement, and the less tangible benefit of playing a role in improving your patient’s quality of life. The VA St. Louis Health Care System provides inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, and many other subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois. Working with and for America’s veterans is a privilege, and we pride ourselves on the quality of care we provide. If you have what it takes, please consider applying for one of our available positions. For additional information, please contact our Human Resources Management Service at (314) 488-8252. Salary
When choosing any job, one of the most important consideration is how much you’ll get paid. Of the ten careers in our review, eight have median wages above the national median salary of $35,540. We used data from Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Occupational Outlook Handbook to consider the median, low and high wages available for each of these healthcare jobs. Keep in mind that the salary you earn is dependent on other factors, including where you live and the type of organization you work for. We’ve presented you with three different wage figures to consider. One is the amount that the bottom ten percent in that field earns, one is the median wage and the last is the amount that the top earning ten percent earns more than. This should give you an idea of the salary ranges to expect when you begin researching healthcare jobs. Radiation therapists, dental hygienists and registered nurses are the three careers in our review that offer the highest salaries.

These careers require new training and, while not as extensive as the schooling for job like a surgeon, most require at least an associate degree. In terms of earning potential, these careers offer above-average pay while requiring fewer years of schooling. You’ll still be able to make a good living, but you won’t have to spend all the years in school that an advanced degree takes and you won’t get in as much debt. The majority of the careers on this review require an associate degree. Some, like dieticians and medical lab techs, require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Other careers, like EMTs and massage therapists, only require a certification, which can take a year or less of training to receive. The tradeoff of choosing a career that requires less schooling is that they generally have lower salaries.

Many of these medical careers also offer specializations as well as advanced job titles. For example, a registered nurse can specialize in pediatrics or rehabilitation and can also get further training or schooling to become a clinical nurse specialist or a nurse practitioner. Many of these medical careers require you to be licensed nationally and by the state you live in. There is often a fee you have to pay for the initial license as well as for renewals. Some states also require you to undergo additional training or continual education.
Finding a Job: Options & Opportunities
Once you’ve completed your schooling and gotten any necessary certifications, you’ll be on the market. Healthcare is among the fastest growing fields, and every career on this review is expected to grow by at least 10 percent over the next ten years, so there should be plenty of openings in whichever career you choose. Careers such as registered nurses, medical laboratory technologists and dental hygienists are projected to add hoose a medical career, you’ll upwards of 20,000 jobs over the next decade. where to work, but there are a You may think that if you choose a medical career, you’ll only have ce options to choose from. a few options of where to work, but there are a wide variety of workplace options to choose from. The most common workplaces for a healthcare job are private practice offices and hospitals. These businesses offer the advantage of being stable, established workplaces. Some careers, such as dieticians and massage therapists, present opportunities for selfemployment. Being self-employed gives you more control over your clientele and the hours you work. Clinics, government agencies, corporations and nursing care facilities are other options for employment. Registered nurses and dietitians have the widest variety of workplaces available for them while EMTs are the most limited.
Scheduling Flexibility: Shift Availability & Work-Life Balance
Careers in medicine are well known for requiring you to work many hours and not having a set schedule. This can depend on the place you work at. A private practice usually has more regular hours than a hospital. Some jobs tend to have more variable schedules, requiring you to be on call and to work holidays and weekends. All the careers on our review offer full and part-time employment. If you are interested in a medical career but want to maintain work-life balance, a job as a dental hygienist or a radiation therapist may be the best fit for you since they have the most set schedule and don’t require weekend, swing or graveyard shifts.
Our Verdict & Recommendations
Choosing a new career is a complex decision that relies on many factors. Some are personal and depend on your combination of skills, abilities, passions and desires. We can’t include those factors in our review, but we can evaluate each of these careers on salary, job availability, workplace opportunities and schedule flexibility. When those factors are taken into consideration, registered nurses comes out the best. This career has the most job opportunities, with over 400,000 job openings expected in the next decade. Radiation therapists earn the highest salary, with a median wage of $80,000. Dental hygienists have excellent scheduling flexibility and high median salaries. http://medical-careers-review.toptenreviews.com/

4 Ways Tech Companies Can Help Women Succeed
T
by Patrick W. Dunne
he hottest topics facing Silicon Valley go well beyond simply the latest tech gadgets and newest devices. It is an issue of social matters and gender equality. The representation of women in technology, or lack thereof, has been a heated talking point for years. Everyone from Hillary Clinton to Sheryl Sandberg has chastised the Bay Area’s technology central for being an exclusive “boy’s club” where its denizens are overwhelmingly White or Asian. Having diversity isn’t just great for the women of Silicon Valley; it can be great for the companies as well. Here are a few ways that both technology companies and female workers can benefit from added diversity:
1. They could adopt better parental leave policies.

Part of the reason that technology jobs have trouble retaining women is that the maternity leave policies in place are often incredibly inflexible and make it difficult for working women to be full-time employees and care for their children. Textio cofounder and CEO Kieran Snyder conducted a study wherein she interviewed 716 women who had left the tech industry. Snyder reported that 484 of the women she surveyed had cited motherhood as a factor in their decision to leave, with 85 of them saying it was a “major factor” in their decision. Others said that it wasn’t the lack of maternity leave that caused them to abandon their jobs, but rather inflexible hours, lack of suitable pay, and other related factors. Google is one of the few major tech companies that offers paid maternity leave. Even in its early years, when it didn’t have revenue, founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page decided that they should extend maternity leave to Susan Wojcicki, the current CEO of YouTube. In an op-ed for Wall Street Journal, Wojcicki cited a study that showed that 91 percent of companies who have instated maternity leave had reported that it either had a positive effect or no effect at all on their profits. Additionally, Wojcicki said that when Google extended their maternity leave from 12 weeks to 18 weeks, the turnover rate for working mothers was reduced by half. Paying for maternity leave was a smart move on Google’s part because replacing an employee costs more than paying for maternity leave. In short, maternity leave not only benefits its female recipients, but benefits the company as well. It’s a win-win situation that any wise company ought to start reaping the benefits of.
2. T ech companies who can better accommodate women would reduce turnover.

Our 58,000 empowered employees from around the world are encouraged to work together to create solutions that improve our customers’ productivity and profitability. We believe innovation thrives when different perspectives and backgrounds are used to push the bounds of our creativity.
According to an article from ERE Media, replacing any employee often costs the company a fraction of that employee’s salary. Replacing an entry-level employee costs the company about 30 percent to 50 percent of that employee’s salary. Mid-level employees cost the company about 150 percent of their annual salary, and high-level and executive employees cost a staggering 400 percent of their annual salary to replace. The cumulative costs of posting a job ad, searching for new candidates, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training add up. With all these crazy costs in mind, it’s fair to say that keeping an employee is much more cost efficient than replacing them. Unfortunately, many tech companies simply aren’t doing enough to retain their female workers. In fact, women who have STEM jobs are 45 percent more likely to leave their job within a year when compared to their male counterparts, according to an article from Fast Company. When Nadya Fouad, a psychologist at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, surveyed 5,300 women who earned engineering degrees within the past 60 years, she found that only 62 percent of them were still in their field. She claimed that the hostile attitudes toward women was one of the main reasons that engineering has one of the highest turnover rates for women.
3. Changing the culture would benefit everyone. www.parker.com Parker is an Equal Opportunity Employer “Minority/Female/Disability/Veteran/VEVRAA Federal Contractor”.
The “boy’s club” mentality might not be everywhere in Silicon Valley, but many have certainly claimed to have experienced it. Just take the example of Isis Anchalee, the engineer who started the #ILookLikeAnEngineer hashtag in order to combat some of the sexism she says she had faced. (In one of her most egregious examples, someone tried

Similarly, Pinterest engineer Tracey Chou has also reported several examples of sexism in her lifetime consisting of things like male co-workers doubting her technical abilities. Any company with an inclusive and welcoming culture is certain to thrive. Workers who feel comfortable are quite obviously more productive and therefore more profitable for the company. It should go without saying that workers who genuinely love and enjoy their job will work harder and are less likely to quit. Workers who are demotivated are less likely to come in on time or be productive, and more likely to take sick days off or leave their job for another one.
4. W omen in leadership roles make for more productive companies.
According to data from Pew Research Center, most Americans see no difference between men and women when it comes to their leadership capabilities in business and politics. Those who did perceive a difference were more likely to say that women were better at being honest, mentoring employees, and working out compromises. On the other hand, men were more likely to be seen as good negotiators and better risk takers. One study by Credit Suisse observed the stocks of companies with a market cap of over $10 billion and found that those with at least one woman on board performed much better than companies with no women on board. The average difference in profits between the two types of companies was 26 percent. European companies with female board members had an average of 18 percent higher stock prices when compared to maledominated companies. American companies with at least three women on board had an average of 20 percent better returns, while Asian-Pacific companies had an average of 55 percent better stock prices. A study conducted by Catalyst, a market research firm, found that companies with at least three woman on board experienced a 53 percent better return on equity, a 66 percent superior return on invested capital, and a 42 percent greater return on sales, when compared to companies with fewer than three women on board. These are just a few ways tech companies can help women and vice versa. It’s true that Silicon Valley still has quite a long way to go before true gender equality can be achieved, but the important thing is that progress is being made. Silicon Valley has already seen the rise of several prominent women like Sheryl Sandberg, Marissa Meyer, and Susan Wojcicki. Several San Francisco-based companies founded by women, such as Premier Staffing and Revel Systems, have made huge impacts on the surrounding culture, and their effects can only continue to grow. With these facts in mind, the tech scene may one day see true gender equality. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

ocial media is a powerful tool, and one that many recruiters are now using to find and vet job candidates. No matter what industry you are in, Twitter can help you gain visibility, showcase your talents and even land you your dream job. As with any social media tool, Twitter can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to looking for a job. Just as that drunken picture on Facebook can sink your career, so can an ill-timed or ill-conceived tweet. If you are serious about using the platform to find a new job, you need to control how you look to the world.

Polish Your Profile
The social media profile you create is your face to the world, and you need to pay careful attention to it. First impressions matter just as much in the virtual world as in the real one, and your Twitter profile should make recruiters want to know more about you and what you can bring to their firms. It all starts with the picture you upload to your Twitter profile. That picture should be polished and professional—it is, after all, the first thing every recruiter and HR executive will see. You do not necessarily have to get a professional photo done, but you do need to create a professional-looking head shot.
Create a Consistent Profile
The head shot and profile you present on Twitter should be echoed throughout any other social media sites where you have a presence. Creating a consistent profile is important, whether you are trying to land a new job or move up in your current career. Your Twitter handle, LinkedIn user name and Facebook ID should be as consistent as possible. Including your name in your Twitter handle is important, since it will help recruiters find you and colleagues recognize you. You can use variations if someone has already used the handle you have in mind. If you work as an accountant, you could use a handle like @BobJones_CPA if @BobJones has already been used. No matter what your Twitter handle, your bio should state your experience and skills clearly and concisely. The conciseness will be easy enough, since Twitter limits your bio to just 160 characters. The key is to make those characters count. You should also include a link to your LinkedIn profile at the end of your Twitter bio. Doing so makes it easier for recruiters to find more information about your qualifications. Just be sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, and that it includes a current version of your resume.
Follow the People You Want to Work With
One of the great things about Twitter is it allows you to communicate with people you do not know -- at least not yet. By following the VIPs of the company you want to work for, you get your name out there and start building a brand. Following those influential individuals can give you that extra edge when looking for a job. You can use any number of directories to find the Twitter profiles and Twitter handles of movers and shakers, but Wefollow and Twellow are two of the most popular.
Make Those Tweets Count
Simply being on Twitter is not enough. Twitter gives you a platform to share your thoughts, but it is up to you to make those tweets count. Twitter allows you to share your expertise; it is your job to present an expert face to the world. Targeting your tweets to the audience you are trying to reach is one of the best ways to distinguish yourself and get the attention of the hiring managers and recruiters you are trying to reach. You could, for instance, post a list of tax-preparation tips on your LinkedIn profile or your personal website, then use a well-timed Twitter post to promote that article and showcase your expertise. Being perceived as an expert is vital in today’s competitive job market. To get hired today, you need to demonstrate your value to the company before you ever walk through their doors. Social media tools like Twitter can give you that extra edge and get the attention of the most influential people in your chosen field. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

ith the economy still so tepid that about 75 percent of all new jobs created this year were part-time, guess which occupation is expected to see an employment growth rate that’s faster than the average of all others? (Hint: It’s not coffeehouse baristas, all those recent college grads working shifts notwithstanding.) Give up? Chiropractors — with employment projected to rise 28 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here’s what helps explain why Careercast. com ranks these specialists in spinal health and overall well-being No. 11 (out of 200) on its annual “Jobs Rated” report:
Personal Satisfaction
How cool is it knowing you’re providing patients relief from debilitating headaches, back, neck and joint pain? Well, the American Journal of Public Health reported that “chiropractic patients were found to be more satisfied with their back care providers after four weeks of treatment than were medical patients.”

he job interview is often viewed as one of the most stressful undertakings in our professional lives. However the most effective way of minimizing that stress is to view it as simply another sales meeting, the product being you. We don’t realize it but everyday we are selling ourselves whether it is professionally or personally. The success of these sales reflected in our relationships with others and our progress within our chosen field. As with any sales meeting, preparation is key. The second most important thing is belief in your product. The example I’m going to use here is a sales rep from a manufacturer of jams who is selling the individually portioned variety to a hotel. Now this sales rep knows for a fact that the quality of the product is lacking and that only a small percentage of fruit is used, making it taste artificial and unpalatable. Knowing this and not believing in the product, how is he going to sell this product successfully? What may happen is that he is able to sell it on price alone but he certainly won’t get any repeat orders. The exact same principles apply when selling your skills. Let us say that a large

Being in the hospitality industry also means that most employees are subject to shift work. Find out if this is the case for your department and whether they are permanent or rotating. casino is looking for a frontline person who is able to work under pressure and deal with many difficult clients. You know that perhaps your history of dealing with difficult clients is not all that it should be and that when the going gets rough you tend to crack. You then try to sell yourself, as something you are not, maybe landing the job on looks alone. The end result of this whole scenario will probably be that you resign in a couple of months really stressed out or you are asked to leave because you can’t fulfill the core competencies. What a meaningless waste of time and an unattractive addition to your resume. Most importantly for you, is the question of whether or not you will be happy working for this organization. An important thing to remember here is, that you actually do have the power of choice. Rather wait a little bit than jump at the first opportunity. Your first step before the interview should be finding out a bit about the company. Great ways to start is either to Google them or look them up in the trade publications. The most important first question you need answered is, what sort of organizational structure is it. A huge Hotel group will almost certainly be run on a corporate framework whereas a small family run guesthouse will informal. Make note of any marketing campaigns they’ve run or are currently running as well as any bad press they may have had in the past. Most importantly take note of their successes because you are going to use this in the interview. Now armed with this knowledge you go into the interview. The main body of the interview entails an in-depth discussion of your resume. Always make sure that this is the most up to date version and that your familiar with it’s contents. Many people have professional writers do their resumes and don’t familiarize themselves with the nuances. A very good guideline is also to never reveal too much about your personal life as this unnecessary and detrimental to your credibility. Having got through the main part of the interview, you are generally invited to ask questions. An excellent way to start is by way of a mini introduction showing that you know something of the company. Letting it lead to the first question is a good idea e.g. “I have been following the successes of the Welcome Group in the press for a while now and I’m particularly impressed by the number of service excellence awards that the group has received. This tells me that there is excellent cooperation between your staff members. As a large group how do you manage to achieve such cohesion?” Now this will answer several areas of concern such as staff turnover, bonuses or incentive schemes, team building and training. The next question you need to ask is the possibility of advancement and stress your willingness to work towards such goals. This will show that you are not going to be passenger but an active member of the team. This will also map out for you what the avenues are and if they fit in with your career plan. You need to make quite clear what your level of responsibility will be and whether or not you feel that you will adequately manage these. Questions like what the reporting structure is, who if anyone is reporting to you and what targets are in place on a monthly or yearly basis. Being in the hospitality industry also means that most employees are subject to shift work. Find out if this is the case for your department and whether they are permanent or rotating. It makes a huge difference to your quality of life if you are on a shift that works well with your personal life. Now you need a general idea on their HR policies such as sexual harassment, victimization, maternity leave, compassionate leave and annual leave. You should always make absolutely sure that these things could accommodate your personal goals such as having children without loss of income. The above covers all the most important aspects that you should know before accepting the job. Never feel obliged to take a job. It could turn out to be a rotten egg. The hospitality industry by its very nature is an extremely stressful area centered exclusively on the customer. If you have worked in the industry before then you have a good idea as to the extent you need to go to in order to do your job. Basic confidence in your ability to provide service excellence is of paramount importance and without that confidence every customer is going to walk all over you. To think creatively under pressure must be the most sought after skill in the industry but it can be learnt. So take heart and prepare yourself thoroughly, a rewarding career awaits you.
