T

his coming weekend I will be traveling to southern California to attend a birthday party for Shirley, an extraordinary woman who will be celebrating her 95th birthday. I do not use the word “extraordinary” lightly. This 95-year-old renewed her driver’s license last week and lives alone successfully. She takes no prescription medication but is consistent with her daily dose of probiotics, calcium and vitamin C. She’s addicted to crossword puzzles and solitaire (on the computer!), can send and forward emails and understands how to switch the input on her TV so she can stream Netflix or watch the evening news. She is consistent with her daily routine and she is happy with her life. What more could you ask for at 95!?! She is open-minded, caring, a good listener, and I hope that my later years can be half as good as hers. Between today and age 95, many important decisions will need to be made. Each day’s choices add up to the bigger picture, but you already know that. You know that today’s choices, good or bad, result in palpable consequences in the future. So what does the future hold for you? When you’re 95 will you look back and say you did what you could to make your life the best it could be? Is there something you could change today that might make things better for the future? Just something to think about.

uring National Hispanic Heritage Month we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuriesold traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. Hispanic Heritage Month, whose roots go back to 1968, begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.” Today, 55 million people or 17% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. This represents a significant increase from 2000, which registered the Hispanic population at 35.3 million or 13% of the total U.S. population. Please share in this special annual tribute by learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. Advantages of A Career in Education

T

here are many personal and professional advantages associated with education careers. Individuals who have a passion for teaching will never find another job quite as fulfilling as sharing knowledge and understanding with their students. It can be personally satisfying when an educator realizes that his or her teaching and influence in the classroom has helped to improve the lives of students as well as the lives of the people around them. Besides the personal fulfillment that comes from helping others succeed, teachers have the unique opportunity of meeting new and interesting people. Teachers have new students every year, who come from different backgrounds, and teachers can continue their educational experiences by learning from students and their families. Teachers also learn from each other. Mentoring is common in most educational settings. Many veteran teachers volunteer to serve as mentors so that newer teachers can learn from their experience. New teachers, on the other hand, offer their mentors fresh points of view and teach them the new theories and skills they acquired at school. Teachers and administrators work together to bring quality education to their students. People united toward a common goal will often build strong working relationships and friendships. The personal relationships that develop in the educational field can be long and rewarding. Some people automatically think of elementary school teachers when they picture education careers. The versatility of education careers, however, draws many people to them. Educators can choose to work with

different age groups and teach a number of different subjects. Additionally, starting in one educational career can lead to advancements in another; there is always room to maneuver. For example, teachers may choose to pursue careers in special education or move into administration. Each job in the educational field has different requirements, and people trading positions may need to further their educations because the necessary degrees, classes, experience, and certification will change with each job. Job security is another advantage that comes with most education careers. Our culture values education, and qualified teachers are seen as essential to our future. Education is constantly changing, and specializations are developed to meet the needs of individual students. Given the changing needs of students, it is likely that more job openings will develop. Education professional can easily transition into careers outside of the classroom. Those who have a strong background in education will have job opportunities in the future, even outside the education field.

with officers about their career experiences, read Police Officer Examination Guide and other law enforcement career preparation guides found in your local bookstore or library, attend local community meetings conducted by LE personnel, and remember to always conduct yourself in a fashion becoming to an aspiring officer. It’s also a good idea to contact the department you’re interested in joining to find out specific requirements. 3. Get an education. Most agencies require a basic high school education, and additional training like an Associates or Bachelors degree is highly recommended. Research criminal justice programs; many programs involve education in human behavior, legal issues, computer systems and subjects that can help you prepare to be an officer. Many of these programs can be completed online. The more advanced your training, the more successful your application will be. LEOs must be aware of changing needs and continuing education is a great way to stay informed. 4. Be physically fit. Most local and state departments require you to pass a physical agility test which involves exercises like situps, pushups, and running (among other requirements). These can be very hard if you have not been exposed to them before or have not participated in training before the test. The application for the department you are applying for will outline specific the standards that you’ll need to know before taking the test. 5. Complete the applications and take the exams. You will most likely be enrolled in a Law Enforcement Academy program if you pass the necessary exams. Training in the Police Academy can take up to a year, but it depends on the department you plan on working for.

FAQs

What basic qualifications do I need to become a police officer? To become a municipal or state police officer most states required a person to be 21 years of age, be a citizen of the United States (or naturalized), and possess a valid drivers license. Some cities and towns require applicants to have a minimum of 60 college credits. There are exceptions to the age requirement, primarily for jurisdictions that have police cadet programs. What is the first step to completing my application? State and municipal police advertise in local papers, police magazines, and at colleges when a recruitment drive is taking place. This outlines where applications can be obtained, and when, where, and how to submit them. Usually they can be picked up at police headquarters, the city of town personnel office, or downloaded from an internet site. How much will I get paid as a police officer? There are dramatic differences in starting law enforcement salary for police officers from state to state and even within different cities and towns in a state. Basic entry level pay may range from $20,000 to as much as $45,000. Increases in pay normally take a graduated approach the more time an officer has on the job. These increases come at the one-year, threeyear, and five-year level at which point many officers are making well in excess of $70,000 a year base pay, not counting overtime and other salary adjustments (educational level, certification, etc.). An officer’s base salary may be much higher depending on where in the country the department is located and the cost of living for a particular area. There are many reasons veterans make exceptional employees. Below are just a few of the reasons you may want to hire a veteran for your next job opening. Proven Leadership

Veterans were put into leadership roles at early stages of their time in the service. The real world, front line and often battle proven leadership developed in the military is well beyond that of a similar person in a civilian job.

Mission Focused

Every member of the military is used to working in an environment that is focused on the mission at hand. They are not clock watchers, but rather are focused on what it takes to be successful in their mission.

Team Players

From the early stages initial training, all members of the military are used to working in a team environment. Some teams are small, others very large, but all members of the team know that their individual efforts are to support the team in reaching the larger objective.

Work Ethic

Seneca Foods Corporation and its subsidiaries are equal opportunity organizations. We recruit, employ, train, compensate and promote without regard to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, disability, veteran status, or any other basis protected by applicable federal, state or local law.

Seneca Foods recognizes that it is our employees who have contributed to our success as a world leader in agribusiness. As an employee of Seneca Foods, your contribution to that success is rewarded by many opportunities to grow and develop. Seneca seeks a workforce that is diverse and desires to hire or promote the individual best qualified for the position. For more information on a career with Seneca, visit: www.senecafoods.com 3736 South Main Street Marion, New York 14505

The work ethic of veterans is unparalleled due to the need to depend on each other for their lives. Every military person knows that their life and success depends on their team mates. As a result, the work ethic of veterans is vastly stronger than the normal civilian work ethic. People who have served in the military are used to working long hours in non-traditional environments.

Training and Education

Today’s military veteran has been trained in nearly every occupation imaginable, with a strong emphasis on technology. Most of the training schools of the military that teach technology, leadership, sales, management and operations surpass those available to civilians.

Immediate Contributor

Veterans, through their proven experiences in the military, become valuable contributors from day one of employment. Veterans are used to being challenged, encouraged to demonstrate initiative, think quickly on their feet and give recognition for performance to those who earn it.

Background Checks & Security Clearances

Over 90 percent of those in the military have had

September 2016

equal opportunity employment journal

extensive background checks for various levels of security clearances. When you hire a veteran, they are less likely to become a risk to your operation. And if your company requires security clearances, a veteran can save you a great deal of money on special background investigations since the veteran can be transferred in status.

Government Paid Relocation Assistance

When leaving active duty, veterans are given government paid relocation. The amount of this assistance varies with each individual, but it can save your company money that can be used for other purposes.

Tax Credits

There are specific tax credits available to employers that hire military veterans. CRI, a Dallas based company providing online

solutions to help employers attract and hire the best possible job candidates, has created a web based solution that allows employers who hire veterans to take advantage of the veterans tax credits. CRI’s system provides automated qualification of all available tax credits for each veteran applicant in addition to screening tools to help the employer select the best candidates. Tax credits recovered may run from $1,500.00 to $8,000.00 per hire, and are a one for one dollar credit against the employer’s income taxes payable. CRI is compensated through earning a percentage of the actual tax credits recovered for the employer. This unique new service is brought to you in partnership with VetJobs and CRI. Registered Nurse Salary Outlook

W

ith 2.6 million individuals now working in the profession, registered nurses account for 60 percent of the health care industry according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Working closely with doctors and other health care workers in treating illnesses and injuries, registered nurses act as the primary care givers for most patients. Registered nurses are detail-oriented people who are caring and sympathetic toward the needs of others, and enjoy working closely with patients and their families. Entering this profession requires a bachelor’s or an associate degree and the passing of a national certification test for licensing, but the employment out and registered nurse salary forecast make it a career with a bright forecast for future employment opportunities.

Nursing Specializations

A Multidiscipline Consulting Engineering Firm with offices located across the US and abroad Since POWER Engineers began in 1976, we have grown into a flexible and progressive consulting engineering firm. We are a company of innovators. We encourage new ideas and fresh approaches and, most importantly, we strive to be our clients’ first choice. These traits and deep technical skill account for the mutual success of POWER and our clients. POWER Engineers, Inc. shall abide by the requirements of 41 CFR §§ 60-1.4(a), 60-300.5(a) and 60-741.5(a). These regulations prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals based on their status as protected veterans or individuals with disabilities, and prohibit discrimination against all individuals based on their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Moreover, these regulations require that covered prime contractors and subcontractors take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment individuals without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, protected veteran status or disability.

As nurses acquire experience, many of them seek assignments in specialized areas of medicine such as oncology, pediatrics, maternity, obstetrics, critical care, surgery and emergency care. Registered nurse salary scales will vary depending upon the specialization chosen. There are other specialized areas in nursing where patient care occurs outside of a hospital setting. Hospice nurses care for patients suffering from terminal illnesses. Hospices set up as part of a hospital, or in a separate facility. The focus of care for the hospice nurse is alleviating or minimizing patient pain and discomfort. Oncology nurses specialize in the treatment of patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. These nurses are found in hospitals, clinics or doctors’ offices assisting doctors in conducting specialized tests to diagnose and plan courses of treatment. Geriatric nurses usually work in nursing homes or nursing care facilities where they care for elderly patients. In addition to the tasks performed by other nurses, geriatric nurses spend a significant amount of time supervising the patient’s diet, nutrition and exercise. Educating patients and their families on the care being administered is an important role played by the geriatric registered nurse.

Education and Licensing

The road to becoming a registered nurse begins with a bachelor’s or associate degree in nursing involving classroom instruction and supervised clinical training in a hospital. While a bachelor’s degree is preferred for future advancement within the profession, the associate degree can be obtained in just 2-3 years. If an employer offers tuition reimbursement benefits, the graduate can take advantage of this benefit to complete the bachelor’s degree. An alternative to obtaining a college degree is the nursing diploma offered by a few hospitalbased programs, but the number of such programs has diminished in recent years.

Registered Nurse Salary

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median registered nurse salary as $67,720 according to the latest survey in May 2010. A registered nurse salary will vary from the national median depending upon the specialty practiced and the geographical location of employment. Nurses who obtain advanced degrees and become nurse practitioners, clinical specialists, and midwives can expect to earn substantially more than the median registered nurse salary because of the higher level of responsibility in those positions.

What Skills Do You Need To Get A Job in Advanced Manufacturing? Debbie Mickle

The making of products using cutting edge technology in factories all over the US are undergoing some exciting changes. Today’s high tech work environments are bright, relatively quiet factories that are almost as sterile as a medical lab.

D

o you like to... Problem solve? Design and make things? Figure out what tools you will need to make something? Work on computers? Work with a team? Manufacturers today are rapidly innovating the way things are made, creating new manufacturing techniques and scrambling to make sure our workforce has the skills needed to fill the jobs. This new approach requires a staff with advanced computer skills and specialized training to produce goods more efficiently on these new super automated factory floors. How many jobs are out there? In the last 4 years, according to the National Association of Manufacturers, the US has added almost 600,000 manufacturing jobs. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 12 million Americans are currently employed in manufacturing. Get this; one out of every 7 jobs depends on manufacturing in some way. And in Virginia there is a projected annual shortfall of 11,000 skilled technicians for career opportunities in modern manufacturing. The types of jobs available in this industry are high tech and very diverse. For example, the Rolls- Royce Crosspointe factory in Prince George, Virginia uses the newest technology to develop jet engine turbines that are built into the largest and newest jet engines today. Lorin Sodell,

Manufacturing Executive at Rolls-Royce Crosspointe, describes the types of job opportunities there: As technology plays an increased role in manufacturing, a pipeline of qualified workers with advanced skills is critical to the industry. Our factory employs people from a wide variety of disciplines, all highly skilled technicians and engineers that have a lot of training. The pathways to pursue a career in this field are diverse. Rolls-Royce Crosspointe employs high school students as apprentices who have the opportunity to “earn while they learn.” We partner with the Career and Technical Centers in the schools and bring on the best and the brightest to learn all about the company. Once hired, we offer apprentices additional college training toward their career in manufacturing. We employ graduates from 2 year programs at Community Colleges and graduates from 4 year Colleges and Universities. I am frequently asked how to help young people explore manufacturing and other STEM fields. My answer is always to encourage them to find a VirginiaFIRST Robotics team and get involved. People in Advanced Manufacturing careers play important roles in making millions of products that are delivered all over the globe. Now what do you want to make? Interview with Geophysicist, Jay Wellik by Dennis Vilorio

What do you do?

I’m a research geophysicist studying volcanic activity at the Cascades Volcano Observatory. What I do depends on the time of year, but it boils down to three main duties: Researching, crisis response, and training with foreign counterparts.

Tell me about your research.

I look at fundamental questions, such as why volcanoes erupt and what signals might forecast an eruption. I use data from volcanoes in Alaska, because there’s a long history of seismographic monitoring there. I can see what happened before an eruption, when it happened, and what followed. I might see a “swarm” of earthquakes, a series of 10 to 100 quakes, and find out whether nearby volcanoes erupted after such a swarm in the past. We have catalogs of these swarms, so we can compare patterns in different locations to make predictions. For example, did the swarm come 1 or 2 weeks before an eruption? And if the swarm is of a specific magnitude, what’s the chance that a volcano might erupt afterward?

How do you respond to eruptions?

If there’s a volcano that’s showing signs of an eruption, the local observatory might call us in. As part of our crisis response duties, we stream and analyze data in real time so we can forecast what might happen. Usually, we don’t have much time once signs of eruption have started.

What do you do in your trainings abroad?

I spend several days or weeks at a time working at foreign observatories and training with their staff. We study their data, run simulations, give presentations, share techniques, and more. Working with teams abroad gives us a wider perspective on the many scenarios that might lead to an eruption. Each person specializes in a particular type of volcano, so we benefit from everyone’s experience.

How do the different parts of your job tie together?

There’s always some kind of volcanic activity happening somewhere in the world, so we work around the clock. After an eruption, we try to determine if we missed a signal. And we discuss what we learned with local and foreign teams so we can all improve.

How did you prepare for your job?

As an undergraduate, I studied geology. A lot of people study mathematics or physics. As part of my master’s program, I also worked at an Indonesian observatory while

Page 19

What do you find challenging about the work?

The hardest part is that you never know your schedule. You can try to plan out your week, month, or year, but you never know when a volcano will start erupting. It can be difficult to get into the flow of work because things crop up without warning. Other times, there is no crisis happening, and you have all this time with nothing planned. It’s also hard to coordinate and synthesize complex data into something people can understand. Lots of people are involved, and we might have many different opinions about what might happen, but we can’t tell the media a whole lot of conflicting information. As a group, we have to speak with one voice, so it’s a challenge to make sure that every voice is heard. We spend a lot of time thinking about how to do that better.

Computer skills are essential. Sometimes I wonder if I’m a volcanologist or an IT specialist. I do a lot of programming and troubleshooting because different teams use different types of software, and we end up hitting a lot of snags that we have to solve. Most of the people on my team, including me, speak a second language. Communicating well with our foreign counterparts is a very important part of the job. ore people with disabilities are working for the federal government than ever before, according to the latest report from the Office of Personnel Management. In a memo from OPM’s acting Director Beth Cobert, at the end of fiscal 2014 more than 247,600 people with disabilities were non-seasonal full-time permanent employees for Uncle Sam, meaning “there were more people with disabilities working in the federal government — by percentage share and by real numbers — than at any time since we started record-keeping 34 years ago.” The 247,608 people with disabilities working for the federal government in fiscal 2014 represent a 0.76 percent increase in the workforce from 2013, when 234,395 full-time, permanent employees with disabilities worked for the government. “I’m proud of the work we have done with agencies across government to help make this happen,” Cobert said. “We are also looking to improve on these totals.”

The steady progress is the product of President Barack Obama’s 2010 initiative to hire 100,000 people with disabilities by 2015. According to the federal Standard Form (SF) 256-Self-Identification of Disability, a person with a disability is someone who: • Has a physical impairment or mental

impairment (psychiatric disability) that substantially limits one or more of such person’s major life activities. • Has a record of such impairment. • Is regarded as having such an impairment. • Targeted disabilities outlined in the form include deafness, blindness, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, psychiatric disabilities and dwarfism. In her memo, Cobert said roughly 72,000 full-time permanent employees with disabilities have been hired between 2011 and 2014. Adding in part-time employees, that number increases to roughly 80,500 people and more than 115,000 workers when all permanent and temporary employees with disabilities are counted. “This important story is about more than numbers,” Cobert said. “By demonstrating our commitment to providing equal employment opportunities for Americans with disabilities, we are also tapping into a talent pool that enriches the 2-million strong federal workforce.”

Veterans Affairs leads in new hires with disabilities

The agency with the highest percentage of new hires in 2014 was the Department of Veterans Affairs, with 6,680 All Disability workers, which is about 23.6 percent of its workforce.

September 2016 The Social Security Administration hired 805 workers, or 13.5 percent of its workforce. The Broadcasting Board of Governors did not hire anyone under the All Disability category, while the Consumer Product Safety Commission hired a single person within that group. Both agencies respectively did hire on two and three employees that fell under the label of All Disability including 30 percent or more veterans with disabilities. “In my view, we need people with disabilities in every agency and at every level of federal service if the government is going to provide the excellent service that the American people expect and deserve,” Cobert said. “We cannot fulfill our mission without such diversity.” In the years since the presidential challenge, OPM has developed an online course called “A Roadmap to Success: Hiring, Retaining and Including People with Disabilities,” and each agency has outlined goals and strategies in its respective disability plans, according to OPM’s report. OPM and the Chief Human Capital Officers Council have also worked to provide resources for people with disabilities who are looking for federal work. “As encouraging as the numbers are, our work is not done,” Cobert said. “We need to make sure that after we hire these accomplished and motivated employees, they have opportunities for advancement. We need to do more to provide them with training and mentoring. We need to focus on retaining them in federal service. We’re holding leaders accountable. We’re working with agencies and affinity groups to build mentoring programs, because we know how important great mentors are to fostering confidence and success. How to be More Marketable as a Medical Assistant by Lisa Otto

L

ike any healthcare professional, the more you, as a medical assistant, can demonstrate proficient healthcare skills and knowledge, the better your chances for landing the perfect job. Marketing yourself to potential employers may be difficult when you’re competing against many other medical assistants for the same position. Making yourself stand out and increasing your marketability may not be as hard as you think.

Specialize

Medical assistants have the benefit of working in nearly any medical specialty. During your medical assistant training, you likely rotated through several medical specialties. Some medical fields require broad medical knowledge and skills, like family practice or internal medicine. However, other areas of medicine require a more specific set of knowledge and skills, such as podiatry and ophthalmology. Podiatric medical assistants are specially trained to assist a podiatrist in the care of feet. Duties may include making castings of feet for orthotics, helping with minor surgical procedures, casting, splinting and wound care. Ophthalmic medical assistants administer eye tests and assist the physician with eye care procedure. Other medical specialties requiring specific skills include pediatrics, orthopedics and cardiology. Medical specialties can be demanding. It can take months to years to learn the aspects of patient care and treatment in a specialty. You’ll need to know anatomy and physiology, diseases, medications and treatments related to the specialty you choose. Once you’ve done this, you’ve acquired valuable skills that

make you highly marketable. Employers may have a hard time finding a medical assistant with the specific skills required to work in some medical specialties. Your established knowledge and skills in your specialty make you valuable to an employer with a need to find just the right medical assistant. If you’re thinking of specializing, consider doing a clinical rotation or volunteering in the area you’re interested in. If you’re still in school, ask your instructor if you can do an extra intern rotation in the area of your choice.

Extend your Education The mission of the Episcopal Health Services Inc. of the Diocese of Long Island is to provide quality health care with an emphasis on patient safety through its hospital, ambulatory care facilities, and continuing medical education, recognizing the emerging lifecare needs of the communities served.

Earning additional certifications may be beneficial to your marketability as a medical assistant. Clinics, outpatient surgery centers and ambulatory care centers often need medical assistants with a wide variety of competent skills. Earning additional certifications is a good way to prove competency and dedication in your field. Many certifications go hand-in-hand with your medical assisting degree. Consider certifications in phlebotomy, as a pharmacy technician, in intravenous therapy (where allowed by state), or in childbirth education or as a lactation consultant. If you prefer working in administration, consider becoming certified in transcription or as a medical coder.

Medical assistants working in urgent care or as a patient care technician in an emergency room may consider advanced certifications in emergency medicine. Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Providers (PEPP) can provide in-depth information on caring for children at an emergency level. Medical assistants working in emergency medicine may frequently perform electrocardiograms (EKG); earning certification as an EKG technician is a great way to demonstrate proficiency in this skill.

Stay Current

Medical assistants need to stay current of medical advancements. Attending medical assisting conferences is a good choice for updating your knowledge and skill. However, consider branching away from the same conferences you may attend every year. As a medical assistant, you have the ability to attend any conference that is intended for allied health care professionals, not just those aimed at medical assistants. Consider attending one to two conferences per year in your area of interest. Professional journals are jam-packed with medical information that can help you stay current. Choose a journal in the area of medicine that you’re currently working in. Or, if you’re thinking about switching specialties, choose a journal in your field of interest. Medical assistants working in family practice need to stay current on a variety of subjects, from obstetrics to wound care and diabetes. Choose magazines and journals that offer a wide variety of topics, such as those targeted to family or internal medicine. If you work in a clinic, journals may be sent to the physicians in your office that you can borrow. If your city has a medical teaching hospital nearby, a local library may also carry the most popular medical journals for you to peruse. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

TEACHING FOR A LIVING

I

by Dennis Vilorio

f you dream of inspiring the minds of the future, consider teaching. Across all education levels, teachers engage students in learning every day. Teachers give students the knowledge and tools to succeed both in school and beyond the classroom. “I know that I have a huge impact on my students not just now, but for the rest of their lives,” says Lydia Shelly, a high school math teacher in Glendale, Arizona. “Seeing them rise to the challenge gives me great pride.” A career in teaching is also projected to have many job opportunities in the coming years. Between 2014 and 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects nearly 1.9 million job openings for teachers of preschool through postsecondary school. Keep reading to learn more about teaching opportunities in schools. Find out what the work involves, how jobs vary by grade level or specialty, what it takes to become a teacher, and more.

A Teacher’s Day

For many teachers, the workday starts early and ends late. Job duties vary by subject and grade level, among other factors. But teaching generally involves class preparation, instruction time, and after-school duties. Class preparation. Teachers spend a lot of time preparing for their students. This may include both setting up a classroom prior to the start of the academic year and readying lessons and assignments they plan to cover each day. Among teachers who have their own classroom, many use visual devices and seating arrangements to create an inviting learning space. For example, they may put up maps, change decorations with the seasons, and display inspirational quotes. Or they may arrange desks in groups or a semicircle to encourage participation. Preparation for day-to-day teaching may take place inside or outside the classroom. In advance of each day’s lesson, teachers review the topics they plan to cover; write or adjust a lesson plan; and create tests, homework, or other assignments. Improvising in the classroom isn’t a good idea. “Being prepared is crucial and sets a good tone for the class,” Shelly says. “If you go in without a plan, your students will sense it.” Lesson plans often follow a curriculum. In postsecondary schools (such as colleges and universities), the curriculum takes the form of a course syllabus developed with input from the department. In elementary, middle, and high schools, the curriculum may be set by the state, school district, department, or special mandate (such as a charter). The curriculum lays out broad learning goals and standards, helping teachers figure out how much time to spend on each topic. Lesson plans break up these goals into smaller, specific pieces that allow for focused instruction—with some leeway. “We have to follow the curriculum to keep up with the goals,” says Adrienne Davenport, a preschool teacher in Portland, Oregon. “But every day is different, and we try to balance learning with fun.” Instruction time. Teachers often start class by introducing the lesson. To help students understand the lesson better, the introduction might cover terminology, offer context, and show how the topic relates to others. Teachers might use visual aids to summarize the lesson and announce assignments and upcoming tests. Some teachers are with the same class all day; others have a few classes throughout the day with different students. Class sizes vary by grade level and subject, too. Teachers may have an assistant to help lead daily activities, small groups, or labs. Providing instruction also involves using strategies to manage the classroom. Teachers may try to structure activities to keep everyone focused, for example. “If it’s just lectures, class is boring,” Shelly says. “Including group activities, moving around, and using the board to visualize the concepts lets students feel successful in their own way, so they stay engaged.”

Teachers routinely assess student progress and may offer extra help to students who fall behind. Homework, tests, and informal assessments give teachers a sense of how well students are learning the curriculum. After-school duties. Teachers often continue working after the final bell rings. For example, they might sponsor student clubs, chaperone events, or grade assignments. Before or after class, teachers may have office hours to help individual students, discuss an assignment, and offer advice. They also attend a lot of meetings: with other staff, with school

By the Numbers

BLS data show variation in employment and projected growth in teaching occupations. Wages also differ, based on factors such as grade level and geographic location. For example, in May 2015, postsecondary teachers earned about $10,000 more per year than elementary school teachers ($64,450 compared with $54,890). And teachers in Alaska generally had higher wages overall than those in Montana. But nearly every teaching occupation earned more than the $36,190 median annual wage for all occupations in May 2015. This section presents data breakdowns by grade “I know that I have a huge impact on my level: preschool and kindergarten through high students not just now, but for the rest of their school (K-12) teachers, postsecondary teachers, lives,” says Lydia Shelly, a high school math and special education and other teachers. teacher in Glendale, Arizona. “Seeing them rise Preschool and K-12 to the challenge gives me great pride.” teachers. reasons. And often, the larger the occupation, the greater the number of needed replacements projected. For example, job openings for elementary school teachers are projected to number close to 380,000, many more than the 3,900 openings projected for middle school teachers of career and technical education. How much these teachers earn varies by occupation. Annual wages were highest in this group for secondary school teachers at $57,200. (Secondary schools are also commonly known as high schools.) Other K-12 teachers earned wages in the $50,000 range, with the exception of preschool teachers—who earned about half that amount ($28,570). Postsecondary teachers. Postsecondary teachers (commonly referred to as professors or instructors) work in community colleges, universities, technical and trade schools, and other institutions of higher learning. They instruct students in a variety of disciplines, including business, engineering, and music. BLS data show there were nearly 1.9 million postsecondary teachers employed in 2014. Overall, these occupations are projected to have faster than average employment growth and more than half a million job openings—and over half of these openings are expected to come from the need to replace teachers who leave.

Ups and Downs

5 Tips for Finding Your First Job in Healthcare

Page 31

A

s one of the leading medical employment agencies in Sacramento, Pacific MedStaff knows that employers want experience. Yet, how can you gain experience if you can’t find a job as a healthcare professional? It may seem like the odds are against you, but there are some steps you can take to increase your chances significantly of landing a job in healthcare. Here’s a look at five of them:

#1. Get involved

Join a professional association and get involved with the events and offerings they sponsor. In addition, you may want to consider volunteering until the right opportunity comes along. You don’t have to do it on a full-time basis; simply a couple hours a day to expand your network of contacts and gain valuable skills.

#2. Customize your resume

Your resume is the first impression you make on an employer and it needs to be perfect. Not only should it be mistake-free, but every resume you send out also needs to be tailored to the position to which you’re applying. If you’re applying to a position at a nursing home, for instance, then include any relevant nursing home-related experience you have. A onesize-fits-all resume just doesn’t cut it.

#3. Network often

Employers are more comfortable hiring those they know…or, at least, those that have been referred to them by a trusted source. So it’s important to network so that you can raise your visibility among employers in the healthcare field. Also, if your healthcare education included an internship or clinical experience, reach out to the contacts you made at those organizations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or if anyone knows about new job opportunities opening up.

#4. Set yourself apart from your peers

When employers are receiving hundreds of resumes for one position, it’s important to distinguish yourself from the rest. To do so, be sure to follow up with a simple call or email expressing your interest once again in the healthcare job and why you think you’d be a good fit for it.

#5. Get extra help

There’s plenty of help out there for those seeking employment in the healthcare field. For instance, your alma mater likely offers free career services, where you can meet with a career counselor who can help connect you with possible healthcare job opportunities. Likewise, you can connect with a medical employment agency who specializes in placing healthcare professionals with employers. If you’d like to learn more, please call Pacific MedStaff. As one of the leading medical employment agencies in Sacramento, our experienced professionals can help you polish your resume and your interviewing skills, so you can find the healthcare job that’s just right for you.
