T

here are those among us (nearly half of all who voted) who believe that the final outcome of the presidential election is a great thing for us as a nation, and those (the slightly bigger other half) who believe that the outcome is the worst possible thing that could happen to our country. Honestly, I’m mostly just glad that the mud-slinging and name calling campaigns are over. For nearly two years we endured finger-pointing with blaming accusations, witnessed rude comments on national television being spouted from one candidate to another and back again, and frankly, I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed for the system that allows such unprofessional actions to occur, and I’m embarrassed that the two people who were running for the highest position in our land felt compelled to (and actually could!) resort to such lows. While previous presidential campaigns have focused on what brings us together, this election has been proactive in exposing our differences—in painful, insulting ways—generating fear and confusion, and I find that unacceptable. Our country was built on many cultures working together for the common good. I believe it should continue that way. In this increasingly diverse and multicultural country, we must take responsibility for our words, our actions, and how we move forward into the future, and if you ask me, that includes peace and security for each of us.

President’s Council Announces Increase in Veteran Hires

In

the more than five years since President Barack Obama established the Veterans Employment Initiative, a steadily increasing annual percentage of veterans have entered federal civilian service. In fiscal year 2014, according to an Office of Personnel Management news release, the percentage of veteran new hires hit a new high of 33.2 percent, surpassing the previous mark set in FY 2013, when 31 percent of all new Federal civilian hires were veterans. Fiscal 2014 also marked the first time since the president established the Veterans Employment Initiative that new veteran hires increased in a year when overall new employee hires also increased.

‘Ongoing and Sustainable’ Progress for Veterans

The goal of the President’s Veterans Employment Initiative, officials said, is to help federal agencies identify qualified veterans, clarify the hiring process for veterans seeking employment with the federal government, and help them adjust to the civilian work environment once they are hired. “I am confident that together this council is doing what is needed to achieve the president’s objectives and establish the foundation for ongoing and sustainable progress for our veterans for years to come,” said OPM Director Katherine Archuleta, vice chair of the council. The council is made up of 24 Cabinet-level members and other independent agency representatives. It is co-chaired by Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald.

Increasing Focus on Female Veterans, Diversity

At a meeting today, officials said, the council discussed the fiscal 2014 veteran employment numbers and recommendations from the Council’s Women Veterans Working Group. Archuleta had asked Catherine Emerson, the Department of Homeland Security’s chief human capital officer, to lead a working group to assess the hiring of women veterans, officials said. The council approved the group’s recommendation to adopt an addendum to the governmentwide Veterans Recruitment and Employment Strategic Plan FY 2014 -- 2017. The addendum will add measures related to women veterans and diversity to the plan’s existing goal areas of leadership commitment, employment, marketing and information gateway.

Six Steps to Finding A Federal Job

1. U nderstand the differences between the private and federal sectors. 2. Seek out all federal job vacancies and bid on multiple positions. 3. Completely read and analyze each job announcement. 4. Package a professional federal resume. 5. Don’t give up when you receive your first rejection. 6. Prepare for interviews.

You can learn from rejections by contacting the selecting official and/ or the HR specialist that is listed on the job announcement. Ask what training and/or experience would have enhanced your application package for future positions. If the selecting official or HR specialist suggests obtaining certain education, training or experience, work to achieve their recommendations. A rejection may also be due to things beyond your control such as funding restrictions, a hiring freeze, or your selection may have been blocked by a military member claiming veterans’ preference. You may discover that you did have the specific skills needed, however you either neglected to capture required key words and phrases (skills needed) in your work descriptions or didn’t include critical work history in your application. This happens frequently. It doesn’t pay to debate your qualifications over spilled milk. The job has already been filled. Thank the selecting official for his/her candor and time, then revise your bid for the next opening. Evaluate your federal resume using the techniques listed in Chapter Six of The Book of U.S. Government Jobs to ensure you properly covered in detail your work history, accomplishments, and skills. You must address over 40 specific areas in your resume and include details that prove without a doubt that you have the required skills to be successful and excel in

the position. Remember, the federal resume is nothing like the simple 1 page private sector style resume that you are accustomed to. Write the selecting official a BRIEF letter of thanks and explain that you neglected to incorporate the recommended skills in the original application. Send him or her a copy of your revised application for future reference. Managers appreciate dealing with rational and mature individuals, and you will be remembered. The author of The Book of U.S. Government Jobs used the Individual Development Plan (IDP) process throughout his federal career to target promotions and to work with management to obtain valuable careerenhancing lateral assignments and temporary details. You can do the same once hired. During his tenure as a manager for the Federal Aviation Administration he encouraged employees seeking promotions to develop viable IDPs in concert with management to achieve their career goals. If you should get frustrated, and many do, just think of this: The average annual total compensation for federal civilian workers is $123,049, compared to $61,051 for the private sector. The benefits are outstanding and according to the Congressional Budget Office, Characteristics and Pay of Federal Civilian Employees report, federal employees’ benefits ranged between 26 percent and 50 percent of pay based on time in service, the employee’s age, and retirement system. Manufacturers are Hiring Again

or years, the manufacturing sector has seen a decline in jobs due to a decrease in product. Now, it is starting to turn around on both counts and the manufacturing industry is leading the way for economic recovery in the United States. There has been an increase in orders for manufacturing plants and over 500,000 manufacturing jobs have been added. While this is good news, it is dampened with the trend of high retirement rate among manufacturing employees and not enough young blood coming in with experience, interest or skills needed in manufacturing. As such, employers are finding themselves with the need to focus on recruitment and retention if they hope to keep growing. So now the question comes is how do they recruit that talent they need?

So with that description fitting most of today’s teenagers and young adults, why are companies having trouble filling positions? This negative image in most of today’s youths mind is that manufacturing jobs are dead-end, dirty and prone to lay-offs. This negative image along with the decrease of students who excel in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) has shortened the pipeline that the manufacturing industry uses.

Change Ends Of The Pool

The manufacturing industry is leading the way for economic recovery in the United States . . .and over 500,000 manufacturing jobs have been added.

First they must identify what the talent they need looks like. In an overall package, a person that is ideal for a manufacturing job is somewhat of a “gearhead” mentally. A person with curious and mechanical person that likes to solve problems and make things work better. With the right training and the right manager that can harness that curiosity for growth and new innovation.

What can be done then? Companies need to change ends of the pool. They’ve been looking in the shallow end with undergraduate and vocational students. Now they need to begin attracting and engaging potential job candidates employees in the deep end of the pool. Once they have determined what their ideal employee is like, they need to learn what attracts and interests them.

The movement of career days at colleges and high schools are excellent ideas, but they need to think outside of the box. One strategy would be visiting car shows. Social media recruiting is not just for office professionals. Social sites like LinkedIn is just as effective in connecting with a new and younger generation of skills and talent with mechanical ability. With FaceBook and LinkedIn, you can seek individuals that have interests and skills that are in alignment with your company’s needs and begin a conversation with them. By networking like this, you create a connection that is more on a personal level and create a platform that puts your company’s opportunities out there.

You Snagged Them, Now Keep Them Happy

After you have found the employees that are right for manufacturing, you need to keep them engaged and happy. History has shown that people employed in manufacturing are hard workers and loyal. Their mindset of being employed is more traditional and have values that built this country. However, they are also more apt to be dissatisfied with the training that can give them better career opportunities and growth. Solution: Create career development programs with in-house training. A program that maps out a clear path for an employee to advance within the company and encourages them to reach their full potential. Today, the manufacturing environment is pressure-filled and production-driven. This can make employees feel beat down, overworked and under appreciated. Employers need to change this negativeness, which will increase retention as well as attract new talent. Solution: Create and establish an employee recognition program. Set up activities outside of the work place that will become established traditions making your company an unique employer. Elementary schools have found that having a themed school day engages the students. The same can be achieved with a themed workday or quarterly events like a company sponsored family picnic or baseball game. Make the employee break area more relaxing with pleasing interior decoration that include sofas, easy chairs, games and television. Catering food is always a winner for the hard working staff. These small expenses will do a lot in making your staff feel appreciated and as if they are part of the big picture.

While financial experts will tell us that manufacturing is an important piece that is vital for creating jobs, we have neglected preparing the younger generations for that type of work. Over 50% of companies that employ skilled labor are experiencing staffing shortages and they aren’t seeing any promises of those shortages filling up. So where the experts see the problems of employment for the manufacturing sector?

1. Retiring Baby Boomers:

I remember growing up hear other kid’s talk about what their parents did for a living. Many were in some type of a manufacturing job, but I really didn’t pay much attention to what it was their parents did exactly. My mom was in accounting and my dad was in printing. There were factories around the Dallas area where I grew up and we had class field trips to some of them. As an adult my husband and I toured the Peterbilt factory in Denton, Texas and while I had a short lived career selling office furniture, I took a tour of a Steelcase factory. Still though, the impact that manufacturing has on our world never really made an impression on me, and I’m not alone. Those of us that grew up in this part of the country in the 60s and 70s that didn’t have parents, grandparents or other family members working in manufacturing just didn’t make an impression on us. Sadly, the same holds true for the youth of today. Those that did grow up with family that worked in the manufacturing industry had it instilled in them to finish high school, go to college and get a worthwhile career. So now we have accountants and doctors, we have IT professionals and lawyers and writers. What we may have forgotten though is that manufacturing is important and vital to our economy’s

The first half of the Baby Boomer generation that are in the estimated 11 million manufacturing jobs, almost 3 million of them are over the age of 55 and closing in on retirement. If all of those retire at the same time, the dramatic increase in skilled labor shortage will be mean companies have no choice but to send the work overseas. This could lead to reduced investments in the manufacturing industry.

2. A Poor Image:

A recent industry poll revealed that over half of today’s youth have very little to no interest in a career with the manufacturing sector. Over 60% state they are going with a professional career. Why? Manufacturing jobs have always had a negative image in general such as low pay and a stringent work environment. In reality, that is the furthermost thing from the truth. The manufacturing sector is more up-to-date with the latest technology than many other sectors and the work environment is one of the friendliest. Manufacturing plants are one of the most team oriented among co-workers.

3. Failure to Educate:

The only thing that may move as fast or faster than sound is technology and the manufacturing industry is right on top of the state-of-the-art

equipment and the technology that makes it work and the industry is evolving rapidly. Our schools today are a problem because they can not keep up with the state-of-the-art equipment and technology due to a lack of funding.

So as an employer, what can you do about perplexity?

• Invest in education programs. Invite schools to bring students to your facilities and show them first hand the progressive industry that is manufacturing is and that it does offer a good career. • Get involved with youth programs in your area that partners with employers and the community college so that training for industry skills is available to students. • Participate in career day at local high schools. Register with the local colleges for the internship programs.

These are great pro-active options that will help the future of manufacturing, but what can you do now to get the quality help you need? • Register with a staffing agency that specializes in recruiting people that are trained with skill sets that are needed in the manufacturing industry. Yes, as we have discussed here, there pool of people with those skills is shallow, but a staffing agency can be just what you need to find the right people. They have the time because that is what they do and it leaves you more time do the things we suggested about the future employment. • Invest in training current employees so they can gain more and newer skills that will benefit the company in the near future. Create initiatives and develop certification and training programs. Sometimes we so quick to take for granted the items we need and use everyday such as our computers, our phones and more, that we don’t even realize somewhere along the line, they were manufactured. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) defines diversity as “the collective mixture of differences and similarities that include, for example, individual and organizational characteristics, values, beliefs, experiences, backgrounds, preferences, and behaviors.” They break down diversity even further into two categories – visible diversity traits and invisible diversity traits. In discussions revolving around diversity, visible traits are often what is emphasized and include race, gender, physical abilities, age, and body type. Invisible diversity traits include things such as sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, education, and parental status among other things. Inclusion, while closely related, is a separate concept from diversity. SHRM defines inclusion as “the achievement of a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal access to opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization’s success. It is important to establish a clear understanding of how the concepts of diversity and inclusion differ, as many well-intentioned companies have made the former a priority while neglecting the latter, leading to disappointing outcomes that often undermine the totality of diversity and inclusion efforts.

So much progress has been made in the last few decades, but in order to fully take advantage of the power diversity and inclusion brings to an organization, consider incorporating these three best practices to continue building on the foundation of diversity and inclusion you have established:

1. Continually build pipelines of diverse talent

It should go without saying that minority groups of all kinds are by their very nature, smaller than their majority counterparts. Size constraints of varying degrees can make recruiting the right kind of talent from a given group quite the challenge. Often the biggest barrier to building a diverse and inclusive workforce is the unfounded concern that an organization must sacrifice quality to meet a quota. The truth is that high quality, diverse talent exists but it may be harder to find. Combatting this dynamic requires advance preparation. Companies should make a point to engage with diverse talent on an ongoing basis long before the need arises to pull new people into the organization. By proactively getting to know people of varying backgrounds, business and HR leaders will be prepared to hire diverse talent with speed and confidence.

2. Be flexible and lead by example

Flexible work arrangements can be very beneficial to the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce. Flexibility such as work-from-home options help to alleviate the pressures of recruiting diversity candidates who may be a good fit for a role but may not be in a position to relocate. For candidates who are able to relocate, such flexibility often helps to reduce the impact of leaving behind a support system of friends and family who might otherwise step in to assist with things like child care.

Flexibility provides the added benefit of aiding in the recruitment and retention of women at the senior level who, despite working full-time, still take on the bulk of household and child care responsibilities. The key to making flexibility work is leading by example. It is not enough to simply put a policy in place – employees must understand and believe that taking advantage of flexible work arrangements will not reflect on them negatively. Very senior leaders should find ways to demonstrate that sometimes family considerations take precedence – and that’s okay.

3. Emphasize mentoring and coaching

Providing access to leadership and training opportunities for women, minorities, and other historically underrepresented groups at lower levels in the organization will boost efforts to craft a more diverse and inclusive senior leadership team by ensuring that diverse candidates are eligible and qualified for promotions. Mentorship programs have the added benefit of fostering inclusivity by offering employees a feeling of belonging and a safe place to discuss sensitive issues. This also creates a “chain of command” of sorts for escalating issues to senior leaders who are then enabled to keep an eye on the challenges of promoting diversity and inclusion, and can re-calibrate programs or approaches as needed. Diversity and inclusion is a complex and nuanced topic with many factors for business and HR leaders to be aware of. In the coming months we will further explore ways to boost diversity and inclusion efforts but these three best practices are a good start for companies that are struggling to recruit and retain people from varying backgrounds. here’s no argument that healthcare is one of the fastest growing careers in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs in healthcare are expected to grow at an astonishing rate of 23% job growth over the next decade, with an estimated 974,000 new jobs expected. This rapid growth is due, in part, to greater health insurance accessibility and the maturing of the large Baby Boomer population. Hospitals, health systems, private practices, long-term care facilities are looking to boost their services with qualified, licensed clinical and support (or ancillary) staff. Colleges and universities, recognizing the need to educate qualified clinicians and ancillary personnel, are increasingly offering online courses and degrees for those interested, or already employed, in healthcare. Online, accredited degrees, allow students to quickly move into the work force; and, provides currently employed clinicians or healthcare workers easier paths to advance their education to the next level. Most, but not all, healthcare careers can be attained through accredited, online education. Salary ranges for healthcare professions vary depending on the degree, area of study and licensure. Employment and earnings (not including physicians) for those working in healthcare range from $20,000 to $102,950 annually and requires individuals with diverse educational and technical backgrounds to qualify for positions in the clinical and non-clinical healthcare setting. EDUCATIONAL DEGREES AND ACCREDITATION REQUIREMENTS Depending on the career path, students should be aware of requirements for specific healthcare positions. For instance, students may obtain a Registered Nurse (RN) degree at a two-year community college or a Bachelor of Nursing (BSN), a Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practices (DNP) at a four year school. Not all careers require graduate education; but, salaries will, naturally, be higher for more advanced degrees. Many medical careers stipulate students attend an accredited institution. Referring again to nursing as an example, most states recognize the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) educational standards. Depending on the career, be certain your school of choice is properly accredited for your field.

he elderly frequently suffer from serious illnesses or injuries that require extended periods of physical therapy and rehabilitation. Families may not be able to provide the specialized care that these seniors require. The skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a category of medical treatment facility for people who need intensive medical treatment over a longer term than is generally provided by a traditional hospital. It is not a nursing home, although the two terms are often used interchangeably.

History of Skilled Nursing Facilities

Nursing homes have been a feature of care for the elderly for many decades. As medical technology and treatment improved, the need for a different type of facility became evident. In addition, the ability of families to care for ill or elderly family members decreased due to changing lifestyles and moving to other areas for employment opportunities. The skilled nursing facility came into being to fill this need. Skilled nursing facilities were designed to provide the trained staff and specialized equipment that was necessary for improved treatment of illnesses and injuries for patients. SPACE CAREERS: A Universe of Options

These are just a few examples of the projects that workers undertake in jobs related to space exploration. Astronauts may be the most well-known space workers, but they hold few of the jobs. The logistics of space missions require a large team of workers with a variety of skills. “It takes the persistence and intelligence of designers, engineers, scientists, and storytellers to bring a project together,” says Nasreen Alkhateeb, a multimedia producer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). “The potential of what you’re good at, what you want to do, and what you already know may fit with a career in space.” This article describes some of the science, engineering, technical, and communications options in space exploration. Keep reading to learn about different types of workers involved in space-related occupations and whether one of these jobs might be right for you. You’ll get an overview of these careers, including brief descriptions of occupations, what the work is like, and how to prepare for them.

Exploring space: An overview

For centuries, space exploration was limited to what astronomers could observe from Earth. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that humans began to physically explore space. And U.S. workers continue to be active participants in the research, design, and communications involved in extraterrestrial travel.

In many ways, space missions build on what the early astronomers learned, often with the same motivations. For example, observations of tiny fluctuations in the light from distant stars helped scientists discover exoplanets orbiting in other solar systems. “It’s important to answer questions like: How does the universe work? Why are we here? Are we alone?” says Maggie Masetti, a social media lead at NASA. Many of the technologies developed to explore space have also resulted in innovations that benefit our everyday lives. For example, the precision required to cut large mirrors for telescopes has improved laser eye surgery; materials created to soften spacecraft landings were modified for radial tires and memory foam; and research into solar-powered aircraft was adapted to improve solar cells for residential, commercial, and other uses.

NASA, the federal agency that specializes in air travel and space exploration, has about 17,000 workers. And even though most of these workers never leave Earth, they are involved in the projects that do. Private companies, including those that contract with federal agencies, employ workers in industries such as aerospace product and parts manufacturing and scientific research and development services. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment Statistics survey does not collect employment and wage data by detailed occupation in space-related industries. However, the BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program publishes industry data by county. For example, space research and technology in Harris County, Texas—home of Johnson Space Center—employed 2,920 in March 2016, with average weekly wages of about $2,540. Scientists of all kinds usually specialize in a particular field—and those who work on space projects are no exception. Regardless of their specialty, scientists whose work focuses on space help to answer questions about our universe. Lots of different types of scientists contribute to our understanding of space, including the ones described in this section. BLS projects about 8,600 job openings overall between 2014 and 2024 for astronomers, atmospheric and space scientists, and physicists. However, this number includes projected openings for these scientists in all types of jobs, not just in space exploration. Astronomers. Astronomers observe objects within the universe, including planets, stars, and galaxies. They may rely on earth-based equipment, such as telescopes, or on space-based equipment, such as probes, to collect data on celestial bodies. Analyzing the data they collect provides clues to some questions, such as the age of certain planets. Atmospheric scientists. Atmospheric scientists, including meteorologists, observe weather and climate. They prepare long- and short-term forecasts by analyzing data from computer programs and from instruments such as weather balloons, radar systems, and satellite images. These scientists also may study atmospheric phenomena, such as the Northern Lights and trade winds. Plasma physicists. These scientists study plasmas, which occur naturally both in interplanetary space and in stars. Their research contributes to our understanding about the universe but also applies to our everyday lives. For example, plasma physicists may study the interaction between the sun and Earth to improve space-weather forecasts, which may help to protect satellites, power transmissions, and aircraft communication systems.

Aerospace engineers. These engineers design, construct, and test aircraft, missiles, and spacecraft. In their designs, aerospace engineers must consider each environment’s limitations. For example, because jet engines don’t work in space, where there is no air to push, aerospace engineers instead use rockets, which use liquid oxygen and propellant to build thrust. Computer hardware engineers. Hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and equipment that is used to measure activity in outer space or on Earth. They document their work, writing detailed descriptions of how their designs function so that others may use the products they develop. Electronics engineers. Electronics engineers focus on specific equipment, such as the instrument panels in aircraft and spacecraft. They may design new components or inspect existing ones to ensure that the equipment is safe. They may also develop maintenance procedures for the components they design. Mechanical engineers. These engineers often partner with other workers to create products—including sensors, tools, engines, or other machines—that support space missions. For example, mechanical engineers may collaborate with aerospace engineers to develop the steering mechanism on rocket nozzles.

Technicians

Technicians working with engineers or scientists contribute to space exploration in a variety of ways. For example, they might help engineers test designs or determine whether climate conditions are suitable for launching a mission. BLS projects about 44,400 job openings overall between 2014 and 2024 for aerospace engineering and operations technicians; avionics technicians; and life, physical, and social science technicians, all other, which includes meteorological aides. But this number includes projected openings for these technicians in all types of jobs, not just in space exploration. Aerospace engineering technicians. These technicians help engineers design, develop, and test products. For example, an engineering technician working on a space rocket might help with an engine test by setting up and conducting tests, recording results, and comparing those results with test objectives for recommending changes. Avionics technicians. These technicians attend to the communication, navigation, and other systems central to aircraft and spacecraft. Their tasks may include testing electronic instruments, installing instrument panels, and replacing malfunctioning components. They also make a record of any problems and repairs, information engineers may then use for improving future designs. Meteorological technicians, also called meteorological aides, measure weather or climate-related conditions to produce data for meteorologists. For example, to ensure

Media and communications

Media and communications workers describe the collaboration involved in developing new technologies—and help the public to understand the importance of the work. These workers use a variety of media to convey information, but they have the same goal: to explain the science of projects or discoveries in an easy-to-understand format. BLS projects about 145,800 job openings overall between 2014 and 2024 for photographers, producers and directors, public relations specialists, and technical writers. This number includes projected openings for these workers in all types of jobs, however, not just in space exploration. Photographers. The amazing images from space missions are taken by astronauts or special cameras on spacecraft, not by photographers. Photographers for space projects work on earth to capture all of a project’s milestones, documenting its progress. The photos become a historical record that shows the project’s different phases, from inception to launch. Producers. Producers are in charge of the budget, the production schedule, and hiring crew members to create educational videos. They may work with directors, who are responsible for creative decisions, and a crew, which may include film and video editors. Videos are helpful for teaching concepts or illustrating processes, such as the steps for assembling a telescope. Public relations specialists. These workers keep the public informed about space activities and discoveries. For example, they may respond to requests from the media for project details or fulfill requests from schools for educational speakers. Public relations specialists also help prepare the information that is shared through a variety of channels, including news releases and blog entries. Technical writers. Technical writers often work closely with scientists to present complex information in a way that the public can understand. They may use photographs, diagrams, charts, or other visual material to complement descriptive text.

Many workers in space-related careers say that bringing a cutting-edge project from idea to fruition is one of their job’s biggest rewards. The Highs and Lows of Space Work

Workers in space careers do a lot of different tasks, but they have similarities when it comes to the rewards and challenges of their jobs.

Rewards

Nearly all the occupations highlighted in this article had median annual wages higher than the $36,200 median wage for all workers in 2015, according to BLS. But because the BLS data for these occupations are across all industries, NASA data may be more relevant for assessing what workers in space occupations earned. In March 2016, the average NASA salary was $119,665. About 60 percent of NASA positions are in professional, engineering, and scientific occupations and are usually at the GS-7 to GS-15 levels in the federal pay scale. Many workers in space-related careers say that bringing a cutting-edge project from idea to fruition is one of their job’s biggest rewards. The thrill of seeing a project’s progress in person—as it’s assembled and eventually launches into space—is especially satisfying. “I can see the real James Webb Telescope 15 feet away from me,” says NASA user interface designer Sabia. “Realizing that it will be folded up and put on a rocket blows me away. I feel immense pride knowing that I was a part of that.” Workers also say they enjoy sharing their interest in space with the community or their peers. They may answer questions from the public, for example, or hear from scientists who are eager to use new tools. These

Challenges

As satisfying as a career in space exploration may be, some of these jobs are stressful. Pushing the limits of science and technology often comes with high stakes: minor errors can be costly, resulting in the loss of multimillion dollar projects—or even lives. Workers also say that keeping up with technology is a constant challenge. Often, the time required for a project to be planned, built, and deployed means that better options have since become available. Among the most essential skills workers need for any space exploration project is the ability to work well as part of a team. “Any project is such a huge endeavor, and there are so many people involved in the process,” says NASA multimedia producer Alkhateeb. “Ultimately, it could not be completed without the collaboration that happens between people in multiple agencies.”

Interpersonal skills are crucial for sharing discoveries and ideas—including those from people other than colleagues. “Sometimes when you’re working with the public, you see information through their eyes, and it helps you communicate better with your colleagues,” says radio astronomer Doug Roberts. Workers in space exploration also should be curious, adaptable, and diligent. And they must be able to work well under pressure. For example, a mission’s success might depend on completely redesigning a machine component. Engineers and engineering technicians must be able to set aside their frustration with the failed design and solve problems quickly, in order to come up with an alternative.

Other skills may vary by occupation. For example, mechanical aptitude is important for technicians, who may have to assemble detailed electronic components by hand.

Education

Except for photographers, every occupation shown in the table typically requires an associate’s, bachelor’s, or doctoral degree at the entry level. But you don’t have to wait until college to start preparing for a career in space exploration. Having a strong background in science is helpful for space careers even if you don’t want to become a scientist. Biology, chemistry, and physics provide a foundation for understanding the world through observation and experiment. And, if your school offers them, consider taking classes in subjects that involve the solar system or nature, such as astronomy, earth science, and environmental science. Mathematics and computer science are also useful in many space-related occupations, including those in engineering and science. And communications classes, such as language arts and speech, can help you hone the skills you’ll need to work as part of a team on any space project. College degree programs vary by level and specialty. For example, technicians may need to earn an associate’s degree or get certification specific to their training, such as in electronics, control systems, or power testing. Bachelor’s and doctoral degree programs may include a range of courses but focus on a major area of study. For example, technical writers must have a solid background in the sciences but also need to be adept at the rules of grammar. If you want to sample the work before pursuing a space career, apply for an internship. NASA internships are available for high school through graduate-degree students and teachers for fall, spring, summer, and year-long assignments. Full- and part-time opportunities allow participants to engage in scientific or engineering research, development, or operations activities or to assist with administrative or business processes.
