Top 5 Best Healthcare Careers for the Future The Value of Employing People with Disabilities Entry-Level Government Jobs Celebrating Black History Month

hen I was a teenager, I had a poster on the wall in my bedroom. It was graphically designed with a black background and white lettering, and there was an hourglass in the lower right hand corner. The words on the poster were: “We cannot change unless we survive, but we will not survive unless we change.” They were influential words for a teenager, and they still ring true for me today. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. We have a new president who has values that are different than our previous president. He has implemented ideas that are different from what we have lived with for the past eight years. Many executive orders have been signed, many protests and marches have been organized, which makes me question whether our country is now more divided than ever. What I have learned in my multiple decades on this earth is that change can be difficult, but change is the only constant there is. I believe the biggest changes come from increased knowledge. There has been much talk about inclusion and exclusion recently, so I decided to learn more about those two words.

EXCLUSION: We are not all equal in capacity or value. It is not feasible to give equal opportunity. We must choose and thus train an elite who will take care of the rest. Those not equal will benefit through the trickle-down theory.

INCLUSION is the opposite and works from opposite assumptions: We are unique in value; yet each has unique capacity. All people can learn. All people have contributions to make. We at EOEJournal believe in inclusion, and that each of us has a unique value with contributions to make and that we can learn from each other.

ebruary is Black History Month, and all over the world, people are honoring it and sharing Black history facts and topics. It is also commonplace in many workplaces to also participate and celebrate Black History Month and the contributions African Americans have made to the world. Cultural awareness by Danyelle Little and diversity are now things that we see encouraged at work through programs and special events, and as a former HR manager, I feel that in Black History Month, but perhaps, they could use some suggestions it often brings unity and strengthens company culture. But while there are many or feedback. Here are a few ideas to help the workplace participate in workplaces that do acknowledge and participate in Black Black History Month: Guest Speakers History Month, there are many others that do not.
Does your workplace participate in Black History Month?
Some workplaces invite guest speakers to speak during a Black History Month event, usually a luncheon type of affair. The speaker can be someone who is knowledgeable in African American history and studies, or who may have a story to tell about their life and past. This can be a civic leader or someone within the community. You could also invite someone who is able to talk about inclusion, embracing one another differences, cultures, etc. These luncheons or chats would be voluntary for those employees who wanted to participate.
I have worked in workplaces that celebrated it as well as those that didn’t think it was necessary. I found that those companies that did celebrate it, were ones of inclusion. They were often large corporations with many offices worldwide, and felt responsible to partake in the sharing of information that Black History Month offers. The smaller companies I worked for usually did not celebrate Black History Month, or any other Workshops/Seminars celebratory event outside of holidays. A workshop or seminar can be a great way to get employees involved If your employer is on the fence about participating in Black History Month, it could be that they don’t know how to. It may seem like it is a and engaged on the subject of race. Again, a guest speaker could be given that companies would know ways in which they could participate brought in to facilitate the workshop and answer questions. The purpose is

Visuals
Posters that celebrate black history, quotes, photos—these can be used throughout the workplace to educate others and to acknowledge our contributions. In one office I worked in, there was a massive bulletin board in the main lobby area, and for Black History Month each year, it was decorated with all sorts of pictures, collages, and messages regarding African American history.
Emails
During my tenure as the HR manager for a call center, during Black History Month, each day, I would email out a different Black history tidbit or “little-known” fact. It was wonderful to get so many of the employees talking to one another about the emails saying, “I didn’t know that or, I forwarded the email to my colleague at so and so”. Black History Month is about teachable moments. I hope that more workplaces participate in Black History Month to inspire, encourage, and educate all employees, no matter the color. Today’s Fastest Growing Jobs By Jenni Jacobsen
a state of economic recession, obtaining a high-paying job can be difficult, but having a college degree is shown to help people find better jobs. In fact, it is well known that those with a college degree earn more money and experience more job satisfaction than those with a high school diploma or less. While attending college does present individuals with the opportunity to earn more money, it is important that they chose the right major in college, so they have the skills to be competitive in an unstable job market. Certain college majors, such as fine arts and film studies, for example, will not provide students with the education they need to find a job in a struggling economy. However, certain fields are showing promise, and by making the right choices when deciding on a college major, students can set themselves up for a successful future.
Fields with the Greatest Number of Employment Opportunities
Recent studies have suggested that the following job fields will experience growth and demand for workers: healthcare, education, and technology. College students would be wise to conduct personal research regarding jobs in these fields, and find an area that is of interest to them. Each field offers a diverse group of potential jobs.
Careers in Healthcare
Even in a recession, healthcare services are still in demand, and the field offers a range of jobs that require varying levels of education and interests. If a student wishes to pursue only 2 years of education and obtain an
associate’s degree, the field of medical assisting may be a viable option. Employees in the field assist in the dayto-day operations of medical practices, clinics, and hospitals, and perform of variety of tasks, including taking patients’ vital signs, recording medical histories, and preparing patients for examinations. The median annual salary for medical assistants is $28,429. Students who commit to obtaining a bachelor’s degree enjoy an even wider variety of career paths from which to choose. A popular option is the field of nursing, which is currently one of the fastest growing occupations in the country. Registered nurses earn a median annual salary of $62,450, and provide treatment to patients in a healthcare setting. They perform a variety of tasks, including administering medication, collaborating with doctors and other professionals to plan treatment, and educating patients about treatment procedures and preventative measures. The highest-paying jobs in the field of healthcare are obviously found in the areas requiring the most education. The field of pharmacy is increasingly presenting demand for new workers, and while 8 years of schooling and a Doctorate of Pharmacy are necessary to be employed as a pharmacist, the financial payoff is worth the time and effort. Pharmacists earn a median salary of $106, 410 a year, and the highest-paid pharmacists can earn in excess of $131,000 a year. These professionals are responsible for dispensing medicine, informing patients of possible side effects, ensuring that patients will experience no dangerous interactions if taking more than one medication, and collaborating with doctors to provide a treatment plan that is most beneficial to patient.

Technology Careers
In an age of advanced technological development, it is no surprise that jobs are opening up in the field of technology. Perhaps one of the most popular areas in the technology field is computer software engineering. Computer software engineers design software and test its functionality, and they enjoy median yearly earnings of $74,980. In addition to computer software engineering, information systems management has become a popular area in the technology field. Information systems managers oversee the technological operations of their organizations, often supervising and directing the work of the other technology professionals with which they work. They help their organizations to use technology to create and reach goals, and they oversee software design and internet use and security. The median salary in this field is $112,210 a year. Both software engineering and information systems management jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree, but a master’s degree is required for some jobs and will lead to better job prospects and increased earnings.
Careers in Education
College instructors are among the highest-paid professionals in the area of teaching, and they enjoy median yearly earnings of $51,800. Typically, at least a master’s degree is required to teach college courses, but many universities require a PhD for more advanced teaching positions. Education administration is also a growing field. School administrators, such as principals and athletic directors, earn a median annual salary of $83,880. These professionals typically hold at least a master’s degree and have extensive experience in the field of education. Some may even hold doctoral degrees. With a wide variety of positions available in the fields of healthcare, technology, and education, college students should be able to follow a career path that suits both their needs and interests. While the job market may not be as strong as it has been in the past, students can rest assured that there are high-paying jobs available; they simply need to make wise decisions when choosing a major/specialization in college. Stress Management:
A Few Relaxation Ideas
R
elaxation is important as it helps prevent and control the overwhelming panic that can occur when you are stressed. Relaxation may be a different experience for everyone but common themes are peace, quiet and calm. You need to be able to relax regularly in order to manage your stress. Give your mind and body some time off. It doesn’t have to cost you anything, but you do need to commit some time for relaxation. Here are some suggestions. • Sleep more. Your mind is powerful and can work on problems when you are asleep. As well as feeling refreshed when you wake up, you may also have the answers to some of your problems. • Turn off the TV and stop the constant noise and stimulation. Be silent or read a book. • Learn a relaxation technique like progressive muscle relaxation or visualization. There are books and CDs available on these topics. • Get a massage. Ask the therapist where you hold your stress in your body. This can help you identify which areas to focus on when relaxing. • T ake a yoga class. Breathe and stretch more. • Get a hammock and spend some quality time in it. There is something inherently relaxing about being in a hammock. • S ee a professional hypnotist for relaxation and de-stressing. • Cry. Big sobbing bursts of crying can release tension and you will feel better when you are all cried out. • Laugh a lot. Get some funny movies. Play with your children. Go to a fun park and go on the rides. Be silly. • G et out into nature and walk.

“D
octor” or “Nurse” will always be a good quick answer to the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” But these days, both professions rely on a large web of supporting roles that require shorter, more interesting, or more lucrative educational investments. Healthcare is growing at a faster rate than most areas of our economy, and its job market has kept pace. Advances in biomedical technology require people trained to put them into practice. A more efficient healthcare system requires people with solid backgrounds in administration and technology. An aging US population has renewed interest in many different kinds of therapy. These ten careers are at the core of tomorrow’s healthcare.
PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT
What They Do: As demands on doctors increase, the Physician’s Assistant is becoming a better way for patients to receive timely care. The PA is trained to offer diagnostic advice, provide some preventative healthcare, and even take a look a clinical testing results. As we continue to see a shortage of trained MDs in the US, the PA is quickly becoming part of frontline medical care. Where To Start: Obtaining the education and license that will qualify you as a PA typically takes about two years. Many people start as registered nurses or paramedics before shifting into PA and outpatient care, but entry requirements vary for most programs. The PA track is perfect for someone with basic medical training looking for a step up the ladder.

Can The Glass Ceiling Be Shattered?
T
by Dee Mahoney
he “glass ceiling” is a familiar metaphor and one frequently used by Hillary Clinton. When Clinton became the first female presidential candidate, she said, “I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in the glass ceiling yet.” I hope she is right, and her political success will cause spontaneous glass breakage. I fear that the crack she made in the glass ceiling will reseal over time like an injured cell membrane. One day after millions of people watched America’s first woman presidential nominee in the 2016 elections season’s first presidential debate; Sheryl Sandberg published and spoke about the results from the Women in the Workplace 2016 research study. She said, “The country is still decades away from gender equality at work – even though more women are trying to climb the corporate ladder.” That statement was the key finding from the study of 132 companies that employ more than 4.6 million people. The study is part of a long-term partnership between LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Company to give companies the information they need to promote female leadership and foster gender equality in the workplace. The positive news from the study is that companies’ commitment to gender diversity is at an all-time high. Seventy-eight percent of businesses report that commitment to gender diversity is a top priority for their CEO, up from 56 percent in 2012. However, companies are struggling to put their commitment into practice. The top executives are saying the right things, but employees don’t see their words being backed up with action. Fewer than half of the employees think their company is doing what it takes to improve gender diversity. Moreover, less than a third of employees say senior leaders regularly communicate the importance of gender diversity and are held accountable for improving gender outcomes.
The five key study findings are that:

• Women are still underrepresented at every level in the corporate pipeline. • Corporate America promotes men at 30 percent higher rates than women during their early career stages. • Women negotiate for promotions and raises as often as men but face more pushback when they do. • Women are less likely to be sponsored by senior leaders. • Women of color face the most barriers to advancement For the glass ceiling to shatter, companies need to treat gender diversity like the business imperative it is, and that starts with more action, more training, and more accountability for gender outcomes. Unless companies start turning their verbal commitment to gender diversity into action, the cracks in the glass ceiling will reseal like a wounded cell membrane and no significant progress will be made. emember back in grade school when the teacher asked you to hold hands with a friend on field trips? The idea behind the buddy system is that it’s much harder to get lost if there are two of you traveling together. When you get into trouble, your buddy can help you out, or find someone else who can. Maybe you could use a buddy in your job search. The constant challenges you encounter while seeking out job opportunities and going on interviews make job-seeking a difficult road to travel all alone, and it’s easy to get lost. Teaming up with a job search buddy can give you: Perspective - A different point of view on your progress or challenges. Just hearing your problem restated by another person can give you new insight that will help you find a solution. New Ideas - A partner for brainstorming and an extra pair of eyes and ears to spot opportunities. You can double the amount of knowledge and experience at your fingertips. Accountability - Someone other than yourself to whom you are accountable -- who will ask you once a week what you have done so far, and what’s next. Support - Space to complain or celebrate out loud, with someone who cares about your progress. If you’re facing a roadblock, grousing about it for a few minutes may be all you need to get back into action. And having someone to share your success with can make it much sweeter. While you could use your spouse, best friend, or a coworker to provide this extra help, the individuals closest to you may not be the best choice. The people in your personal life will not always be thrilled with how much time you’re spending on looking for work, and your co-workers may tend to sidetrack you with dayto-day job issues. You may find it more helpful to find a buddy who can maintain some detachment, but who also understands the importance of your job search.
March 2017 You and your buddy can assist each other in reaching your goals by setting up a regular check-in, where each of you reports on progress, announces successes, and describes challenges. The buddy’s job is to listen, celebrate, commiserate, and be a brainstorming partner. Here’s how to make the buddy system work for you in job-seeking: 1. Set a fixed time to talk. Whether you meet by phone or in person, set a start and end time for your conversation. Half an hour is enough; an hour is plenty. 2. Check in about goals and action steps. Make a brief report about where you are with your job search and what steps you have taken since your last meeting. Keep your check-in brief and to the point, e.g. “I got one interview this week, and set up two appointments for networking lunches. I revised my résumé to include more of my past accomplishments, and applied for three new job openings.” Acknowledge your buddy’s progress and celebrate his or her success. 3. Help each other solve problems. Ask your buddy to first just listen while you tell him or her what’s going on and clear your emotional reaction to it. Your buddy can say things like, “Gee, that’s tough,” or “How awful!” but should not offer any advice until you are through. Talk about not only what is happening, but how it makes you feel. If it sounds like complaining, that probably means you’re doing it right. You might say something like this: “I’ve been trying for two weeks to finish my résumé, and there’s just been one emergency after another, and now my mother wants me to help sell her car, and I’m so frustrated! All the words I write down just come out wrong, and I don’t think it’ll ever come together, and I needed it yesterday, and I’m so worried that...” You get the idea. Set a time limit of 5 minutes for reporting and clearing. At the end of that time, ask your buddy to summarize for you: “I hear how frustrated and worried you are. You seem to have two problems that need to be solved—finding the time to work on the résumé, and

Decide on your next steps. If none of the brainstormed ideas seem right, look at each one to see if there’s something useful in it. Maybe you can’t afford a résumé writer, but you know one you could ask for a word or two of free advice. Perhaps a class would take too long, but you could check out a book from the library. Find just one thing you can do that will get you moving toward a solution. Regardless of any problems you try to solve during your session, always end by naming what steps you will take on your job search before your next meeting. Write these steps down—both yours and your buddy’s—so you can check in about them next time. 6. Keep the relationship reciprocal. Make sure each of you gets an equal amount of time at your meetings. If you end up spending the whole session on one person’s problem, devote the next session to the other buddy. Keep your buddy in mind as you make new discoveries and meet new people, and share any opportunities you uncover. The buddy system works best when you do for your buddy what you would like your buddy to do for you. Copyright © C.J. Hayden C.J. Hayden is the author of Get Hired Now! and Get Clients Now! The Value of Employing People with Disabilities
E
by Simon Müller
qual opportunities in the working world are one of the key aspects of the disability equality policy. Employing people with disabilities benefits to employees and to employers alike. People with disabilities possess faculties which can give added value to any enterprise. According to the definition of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), one ninth of the people of working age in Switzerland, in 2011, were considered disabled. The re-integration of people with disabilities in the working world has gained much significance, especially as a result of pressure from politicians to lighten the burden on social insurances. For people with disabilities, taking part in the working life is an essential condition to an equal participation to society. Indeed, work for them is a proof of their full value and their capacities. But not only people with disabilities benefit from employment; enterprises can also find an interest in it.
prise is a concept of Diversity Management, which can be described as handling diversity in the working place. It aims at promoting personal diversity in the enterprise, with the aim of reducing negative aspects. The concept of Diversity Management aims at making the most out of the diversity of the staff, so as to bring economical interests and social tasks into accord.
Economical advantages for the enterprise
Applying diversity policy and employing people with disabilities allows many possibilities to an employer. Most significant is the way an employer can focus on the strengths and capacities of disabled Diversity Management employees, in other words, how he applies as a foundation To account for the benefits for an enter- Ability Management.

More profit through creative thinking
People with disabilities are confronted with many challenges and this on a daily basis. They are used to finding solutions which require flexibility, creativity and an open mind. This creative way of thinking and of handling can be benefitting to the whole enterprise. Problem-solving processes can also benefit the whole staff, so that creative thinking can take place in the whole enterprise, even in teams which have no disabled employee.
For a better image in the public space
An employer with social responsibility can show his engagement by showing his commitment to areas such as equality or antidiscrimination. In this way, an enterprise can decide to stand out and present his philosophy in the public space. A successful integration of people with disabilities can also have a positive effect on the reputation of the enterprise. This effect can be a decisive element in purchasedecision processes. Apart from positive effects on customers and suppliers, employees are also more motivated to work

ntry-level talent provides government with skilled individuals essential to revitalizing the federal workforce, meeting key competencies and directly filling mission-critical positions. The federal government provides competitive pay, flexible work schedules, opportunities to give back and other benefits, which makes them an ideal employer for students and recent graduates.
PATHWAYS PROGRAMS
The Pathways Programs, a result of Executive Order 13562, offer clear paths into federal service for high school, undergraduate and graduate students in addition to recent graduates through federal internships or full-time careers. The Programs provide meaningful training, mentoring and career development opportunities for individuals who are new to a federal agency. There are different kinds of programs depending on where you are in your academic and professional career. Each avenue can give you a taste of what working for the federal sector could entail with the added bonus of potentially converting to an entry-level, full-time position at the end of your term. Begin your career in the federal government by choosing the program that best fits you:
The Internship Program
This program provides current high school, college and graduate students with paid opportunities to work in federal agencies while still in school. The intern’s work is related to their field of study or career goals. Each agency decides how many interns they will hire. Upon successful
completion of an internship, participants may be eligible for conversion to full-time federal employment.
The Recent Graduates Program
This opportunity is a full-time, one-year developmental program designed for individuals who have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from a qualifying educational institution or program. Candidates must apply within two years of graduation, with the exception of veterans, who have up to six years to apply due to their military obligations. Participants in the Recent Graduates Program receive training and professional development, complete an individual development plan and are assigned a mentor. Each agency determines how many recent graduates they will hire. Recent graduates may also be eligible for conversion to full-time federal employment after their completion of the program.
The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program
The PMF Program is the federal government’s premier leadership development program for advanced degree candidates. Individuals who received a qualifying advanced degree within the preceding two years are eligible to apply and are not required to be nominated by their school. This two-year fellowship includes competitive pay and benefits, 80 hours of training each year, a senior-level mentor, a mandatory four to six month developmental assignment and optional rotations of one to six months duration. It is designed to provide challenging work assignments
