I
’ve a relatively new nephew (he’s two). He’s the only small child our family has ever had, and when we get together for dinner, my sister and our family talk quite a bit about what a child should be doing at his age, (eating by himself with a spoon for example) what the next step should be, discipline techniques and the like. This got me thinking about expectations in general. What does one or should one expect out of his or her life, family, career? I know this answer is wildly different for everyone. But I also know that expectations can get you in trouble. The reason expectations can get you in trouble are because they are usually one sided: I expect something from you, and you either meet those expectations or you do not. I rarely (unless I am the mother of a two-year-old child) have a hand in manifesting the expectations I have for you...I just expect. If you don’t deliver, I am disappointed, hurt, or even resentful. I don’t know about you, but I really dislike feeling resentful, so I’ve been working on making requests instead of having expectations. Instead of expecting that a coworker would let me know when they leave for the day, I have learned to ask “Would you please let me know when you leave the office for the day? I’d like to know when I’m the last one here.” The request makes a “no” possible, but more likely than not, the person you requested from will want to help you. So the next time you have expectations and are disappointed, try requesting instead...It may get you further...I say “may” in case you’re requesting something from a two year old.

A
rmed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 2017. It is a day to celebrate, thanks to President Harry S. Truman. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America. Although, originally, there were single day celebrations for each of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, this format changed on August 21, 1949 when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day. The first official Armed Forces Day, which was held in New York City, took place on May 20, 1950 and was themed “Teamed for Defense.” In honor of the special day, B-36 Bombers flew over the state capital and a march was led by more than 10,000 veterans and troops in Washington, D.C. In addition, the first Armed Forces Day also played an essential part in educating society and expanding public knowledge of the military and the role they play in the community. Therefore, it wasn’t only a means to honor those who serve or who have served in the military, but also way to showcase its top of the line equipment and abilities used to protect those in our country. Interestingly, the marked celebration isn’t just limited to the United States. Other countries who honor this victorious day include Armenia, Australia and New Zealand, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burma, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Lebanon, Mali, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mexico, North Korea, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Vietnam. In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday. It’s celebrated on the third Saturday of every May and is exhibited by exercises, parades, and receptions that highlight and honor our amazing military and all of its strength. Since Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, many military installations are available for public viewing for those wishing to take part in the celebration or to learn more about our country’s military. Some other ways to celebrate the special occasion include wearing red, white and blue; flying the American Flag, talking with or writing to a military member, donating to military-based organizations, or sending care packages for those serving overseas. The importance of this day should always be evident. It is a day that our military members rightly deserve and it’s essential that we celebrate it accordingly. An excerpt taken from an article written in the New York Post on May 17, 1952 sums up Armed Forces Day’s utmost importance, “It is our most earnest hope that those who are in positions of peril, that those who have made exceptional sacrifices, yes, and those who are afflicted with plain drudgery and boredom, may somehow know that we hold them in exceptional esteem. he creation of the Jobs Strategy Council (JSC) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will build upon an effort laid out by President Obama in his State of the Union Address to accelerate job growth in American-made clean energy sources. The plan is to empower working Americans with the education and training they need to earn higher wages and to encourage businesses to innovate and create good, high-paying jobs. The JSC will integrate the DOE’s research, technical and economic resources to respond to the workforce and economic development needs of the energy industry. Increased demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) jobs and an aging energy workforce throughout many energy sectors has created a skills gap that the JSC will work to address through partnerships with the private sector, community college systems, union apprenticeship programs, and other educational institutions. The Council will also assist the private sector, municipalities and states with the development of a resource tool kit and workshop materials that instruct states on how to access the Department’s technical knowledge and funding opportunities to create state-based energy jobs plans. “The energy sector has created tens of thousands of good-paying jobs that lay the foundation for long-term careers and provide a major opportunity for social mobility in disadvantaged communities,” said Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. “Technological advances in oil and gas extraction, the doubling of renewable energy production in five years, and steady growth in energy efficiency are instrumental for America’s economic recovery and will continue to be imperative to supporting innovation for our 21st century energy system.”

Across the energy sector, solar saw growth in employment of 86 percent since 2010, according to the Solar Foundation. According to the American Wind Energy Association, an estimated 85,000 Americans are currently employed in the wind power industry and related fields. One of the most exciting career paths in massage therapy is the medical massage field. While many massage therapists work in spa environments, those who choose to work in the medical field focus most of their time treating specific ailments in hospitals, medical offices, and in the offices of chiropractors. • Manufacturing workers account for about 9% of the workforce. There are currently 12.32 million manufacturing workers in the United States, as well as an additional 18.5 million jobs in the U.S. that are supported by the manufacturing industry. That’s about one in every six private sector jobs. • According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 95% of manufacturing employees were eligible for health insurance benefits in 2015. This is significantly higher than the average of health insurance eligibility for all firms, which is 79%. Manufacturing is the third highest sector for health insurance take-up rates. • In 2014, the average manufacturing worker in the United States earned $15,349 more than the average worker in all industries. The average worker in manufacturing earned $25.19 per hour when looking specifically at wages, and not including benefits. • There are expected to be nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs to fill over the next decade. However, nearly 2 million of these jobs are likely to go unfilled due to a gap in skills. According to a recent report, 80% of manufacturers communicate that they have a shortage of qualified applicants, particularly for highly skilled production positions. • Most manufacturing firms are incredibly small. Only about 1% of manufacturing firms have greater than 500 employees. The majority of the firms in this sector are considered small firms, with three quarters having fewer than 20 employees. • Manufacturing has the highest economic multiplier of any sector. $1.40 is added to the economy for every $1.00 spent in manufacturing. In the most recent data, manufacturers have contributed $2.17 trillion into the U.S. economy. • Manufactured goods exports have more than quadrupled over the last 25 years. In 1990, $329.5 billion in good were exported by U.S. manufacturers. By 2014, that number reached an all-time high of $1.403 trillion, even despite slowing growth globally. • In the manufacturing sector alone, the United States would be the ninth-largest economy in the world. In 2014, $2.1 trillion in value was added from manufacturing, and only eight other nations would rank higher in terms of their gross domestic product. • More than 75% of all private research and development in the nation is performed by manufacturers in the United Sates. Research and development in the manufacturing sector drives innovation more than any other sector. In 2014, $229.9 billion was spent on manufacturing research and development. • 30% of the nation’s energy is consumed by the manufacturing industry which equals about 31.5 quadrillion Btu of energy. 5 Tips for Changing Occupations by Elka Torpey
you ever wonder if the grass is greener in another field? If you’ve resolved to find out, the new year might be a good time to pursue a new career. There are many reasons to change careers. Maybe your interests have shifted, or you want the potential for earning more money. Or perhaps you just want to try something new. Whatever your reason, it may be helpful to look at U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data and to consider what experts say about changing your line of work.
Tip 1: Figure out your “why”
In deciding to change careers, it’s a good idea to consider what’s driving your desire. “Are you unhappy with your employer? Do you want to use different skill sets? What is it that needs to change?” says career management coach Marie Zimenoff. You need to ask yourself these kinds of questions to know the type of change you should make. Think about your most recent job. What parts of it didn’t you like? Perhaps more importantly, what parts did you like? Are you sure you want a different occupation—or should you just look for a new job? Make a list of the tasks you enjoy most. For example, maybe you’re a biological technician, and you really like working with people. Some occupations might allow you to use your people skills while still applying your scientific knowledge. Would you like to be a biology teacher? Work toward a management position at your current company? Become a scientific product sales representative? This type of reflection can help you identify occupations you may want to enter, or it might help you decide to stick with your current occupation and instead work in a different setting or job. “People often think it will take a huge change to make them happy,” says Zimenoff. “You might want to start smaller with a change that doesn’t uproot your whole life but will make you happier in your next career.”

Tip 2: Look at the data
If you’re thinking of changing occupations, you aren’t alone. According to 2015 and 2016 data from the Current Population Survey, about 6.2 million workers (4 percent of the total workforce) transferred from one occupational group to another. These and other BLS data can offer guidance as you explore your options. Projections data. Career changers are likely to be interested in occupations that offer opportunity, and BLS data can help you identify those. Economists in the BLS projections program also analyze occupations to determine education and training typically required for entry. With these determinations, you can see whether you qualify for a particular occupation—or, if not, what preparation you may need State labor market offices use BLS national data to create their own projections. Some states also have detailed, current information available by region. Other data. Employment, wage, and transfer data may also point you toward career choices. For example, employment and wage data show how many jobs were in a particular occupation and how much money workers made. In 2015, there were about 138 million wage and salary jobs overall, with a median annual wage of $36,200.
Tip 3: Connect with others
Reaching out to others, both to learn about your options and to help you find a job, is important for all jobseekers. But it’s even more crucial for people who want to switch to a new field. “When you’re changing careers, you may not look great on paper,” says Zimenoff, “and the bigger the change you’re making, the more true that will be.” Networking. Developing contacts, say experts, is essential—and it’s easier than most people realize. Experts say that networking works best when you start with the people already in your circle and ask specific questions. For example, you might ask your family or friends what they think about a certain company, or if they know anyone who works there. “It’s not as scary if you start with the people you know best,” says Zimenoff. Visit networking sites to find out how the people you know are connected. But make an effort personally, too, such as with a phone call. For example, you might call

your uncle and ask, “How well do you know this person? Might she be a good contact for me?” Informational interviews. After you’ve identified people in an occupation that interests you, talk to them about their work. “Have a ready list of questions,” says master career specialist Elizabeth Craig, “such as, ‘What did you like most about your work today?’ ” Do your research ahead of time and assure the people you talk to that you’re only looking to gain information—not asking for a job. Be sure to send a thank-you note afterward and try to stay in touch, keeping them informed of your progress. You might also ask for advice on how to make your résumé stand out when you’re ready to start applying for jobs. Internal contacts. Knowing people who work somewhere you’d like to work is helpful, experts say. Not only do internal contacts give you an insider’s perspective, but they also might increase your chances of being a “referred candidate”—someone suggested for an interview by a worker within the company—when you apply for a job. Internal contacts also can let you know about job openings as soon as, or sometimes before, vacancies are advertised.
Tip 4: Match your skills
As you start applying to jobs in a new field, you’ll need to highlight the skills you have that match what each job requires. Using a chronological résumé, which summarizes work history, is a good way to describe specific accomplishments. Fit skills to jobs. It’s especially important when changing careers to tailor each résumé and cover letter to the specific position for which you are applying. Focus on skills you have that are directly relevant to the job tasks, say experts, not the fact that you’re transitioning. On paper and in person, you should be able to translate how your skills

Switching careers may be easier between some types of occupations than others. This is particularly true when the occupations have skills in common, but it’s still up to you to make that connection. “Those who get interviews are able to show that they’ve done the things the job requires, in a particular context, and that it provided value to the company when they did it,” says Zimenoff. Be proactive. You may have a skills or knowledge gap to overcome, depending on how different your new job is from the one you’re leaving. That’s OK. But you should be realistic about what you need to do so you meet employers’ expectations. If you’re not qualified for your dream career, start working toward it. Do you need more work experience? Additional skills? Professional certification? “There are many opportunities for people to get up to date in a new field, often in a relatively short amount of time,” says Craig, and that doesn’t always mean earning a degree. Even if you do need additional training, though, assessing your existing qualifications can help you figure out exactly what else you need. “The beauty of looking at the skills you have,” says, Zimenoff, “is that you can build on them instead of starting over.”

Resources from BLS can help you decide what type of work you want to do and what type of skills you need to do it. hen it comes to explaining gender disparity among their workforces, tech companies are often quick to point the finger at a broken pipeline. They’d love to hire more women, they claim. It’s just that the entry-level talent pool is still disproportionately male. Opinions differ as to whether or not that’s a valid excuse, but companies have a decidedly harder time explaining away the overwhelming lack of women in mid-level and senior-level roles. Women are not only paid less on average than their male counterparts, they are promoted less frequently to leadership positions. In fact, the disparity gets more pronounced the higher up the chain you go. While women make up almost 37 percent of tech workers at the entry level, that percentage drops to 30.5 percent at the managerial level and declines with each incremental career advancement, according to a workplace study conducted last year by McKinsey & Company and LeanIn. Org. The study found that women make up only 25.4 percent of tech workers at the director level and 20.2 percent of tech workers at the vice president level. By the time you get to senior executives, women make up just 18.7 percent. Zoom in to the startup sector, and the picture is even grimmer. A recent survey by Silicon Valley Bank found that 66 percent of tech startups had no women on their boards last year, and nearly half—46 percent—had no women executives at all. This despite the fact that more than a quarter of the survey’s respondents said their companies had programs designed specifically to increase the number of women in leadership positions. Something clearly isn’t working. Even with increased awareness of the issue over the last few years—including outreach programs to attract more women to STEM careers and tech giants such as Facebook and Microsoft claiming that they have closed the wage gap within their companies—the percentage of women in high-level tech careers remains persistently low. For those who have been working to counter gender disparity in tech, the statistics serve as a stubborn reminder of how much work still needs to be done. “I think we’d always hoped we would have seen more improvement by now,” said Kathryn Harris, president and longtime board member of Women in Technology (WIT), a nonprofit group near Washington, D.C. “When you think about how many women are coming through college—more women than men—you think it shouldn’t be so skewed at the top.” Harris said the effort to hire more women executives is not just a matter of doing the right thing; it’s also good for business. “The research shows that when there are women on boards you actually do better financially,” she added.

5 Exciting Career Options in Nursing

ooking into nursing as a career choice? Or maybe you already are a nurse and are looking for a new niche in nursing? Many nurses start off in a hospital to get one to two years of mixed medical-surgical nursing experiences under their belt. This kind of experience cannot be underrated. It allows a nurse to experience various types of patients and conditions so that they can see if there is an area of interest to specialize in. Read further to explore five areas of nursing that look at specialty opportunities.
1. Mental Health Nursing
Ranging from working with individuals in an acute care hospital inpatient setting to a community-based program, mental health nursing offers exciting opportunities for passionate and empathetic nurses. Supporting patients with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders, to name a few, this field employs nurses who are committed to advocating for those with mental health conditions. The specialty requires either extra training on the job or some employers may require a specialty certificate in mental health. In larger, urban centers the option to work in pediatric mental health with kids may also be an option.
2. Obstetrical Nursing
Although from a distance obstetrical nursing may look like the ‘fun’ way to be a nurse with proud new parents and cooing new babies, there is another side to this specialty that requires a special level of strength, both physically and mentally. An obstetrical (OB) nurse needs to enjoy supporting families through the birthing process while also being on guard to be an emergency nurse if clinical issues arise and to be a surgical nurse to work with C-section deliveries. A specialty program in perinatal nursing is typically required to prepare nurses on how to manage emergencies prenatally, during labor and during the immediate post-partum period for both mom and infant.
3. Nurse Practitioner (NP)
As an advanced practice role in nursing, an NP works autonomously under their own license. An NP can assess, diagnose, order tests and prescribe medications. This job requires successful certification after a rigorous program that is usually two to three years in length. After this is completed, a registered nurse may then apply for a new license as a nurse practitioner. Given the increased scope of practice involved, most programs will require that a registered nurse has completed a minimum amount of work hours, such as a twoyear, full-time equivalent, before applying for the program. However, often the more experience the better in order to prepare to take on this role with its increased level of autonomy. When applying for a program one will need to choose their specialty interest as an NP. This can range from primary care to acute care pediatrics, with numerous specialties in between depending on where you live in.
4. Nurse Educator or Clinician
A nurse educator is typically educated at a master’s or PhD level and is involved with curriculum preparation, delivery and evaluation. This can occur on site at the institution’s campus or from a remote location online. For nurses preferring to stay in the clinical environment, a nurse clinician is another exciting option. Here nurses with experience and education within a specific environment are the leaders to provide education and training to new and current staff members. Nurses without the master’s level preparation may still get a taste of the educator role by taking on nursing students to be their mentor or to mentor new nursing staff during their orientation period with a new job. This role allows the more experienced nurses to enjoy teaching new skills, providing supervision, feedback and being involved in the evaluation process. The above offers only a small glimpse into the many nursing specialty options available these days. There are several more out there that help keep a career in nursing exciting and refreshing for all the years ahead.

5. Travel Nurse Abroad
Opportunities throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand and the UK are limitless and can pay handsomely. However, the paperwork can be cumbersome. It can take roughly up to one year to get all of the logistics in order from transferring of educational requirements, licensure verifications, certifications validated, security checks completed, and payment arranged. Typically this all needs to be done before most travel agencies will work with you. Countries will vary on whether further tests need to be written before obtaining the license. For example, for a foreigner to work in the US the NCLEX exam must be successfully taken. To work in the UK, a course for international nurses is now required before a license will be provided. Once a license is received, it is then time to select a travel nurse agency to work with to find a job. Agencies will vary in their wages, housing support, medical and recruitment bonuses so review carefully. Eventually, a job interview will be arranged over the phone or Skype and then hopefully a job offer is received. The job offer is typically required before applying to customs for the appropriate visa. It may be easier for young adults doing this who can apply for working visas, for example in Australia, and then find a job once in the country. Although a lot of planning is involved, the opportunity to work abroad and experience new adventures is unforgettable.
Your nursing career vision is the link between where you are in your nursing career and where you want to take your career next. Create a career vision by answering questions such as “What do I want out of nursing?” and “Do I want to work in a hospital environment?” Write a nursing career vision statement that precisely encompasses what kind of nurse you want to be and what kind of health care environment you want to work in. After your assessment and career vision development, create a strategic plan for your nursing career and document it in writing. Include your career goals, action steps you’ll take to make it happen, resources you have and will need, your career timelines and identify the indicators of success. you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution to improve your life, Catherine Wood understands. “A national holiday geared toward goal setting is empowering,” she says. “It’s possible to create goals anytime, of course, but it definitely helps to have a push to set your intentions for the new year.” Catherine is a professional life coach. Life coaches assist clients in establishing goals, such as changing careers or losing weight, but their work centers around the process: offering targeted guidance and motivation to meet those goals. “I partner with clients to help them realize their potential,” she says. “We compare where they are with where they want to be, and we focus on bridging that gap.”
What they do
Life coaches may go by a variety of titles, including executive coach or enrichment specialist. Regardless of their title, these workers tailor their coaching to the needs of each client. Process. Life coaches may offer a prospective client an in-depth sample session to discuss his or her life vision. This initial conversation lets both parties gauge whether they’re a good fit for each other, too. “Coaching is a partnership,” Catherine says. “I want it to work for the client, not just for me.” When a coach and client decide to work together, they create a plan with customized objectives and activities for achieving the client’s goal. For example, a client whose goal is to increase profits by 20 percent might commit to changing some business practices, such as giving up the need for control and empowering his team; the coach may encourage accountability by having the client document efforts toward meeting his commitment. Clients summarize their progress and celebrate achievements with their coach, who motivates them in regularly scheduled sessions until they reach their goal. “Someone could be struggling with fears that get in the way of, say, being in a meaningful relationship,” says Catherine. “If we shift those obstacles, we shift the results.” Logistics. Life coaches may have an active slate of about a dozen clients with whom they work for months or even years, depending on each client’s needs. Coaching sessions typically last 30 to 90 minutes, with occasional brief check-ins between sessions. Catherine usually talks with clients by phone, but some prefer to meet in person or over video chats. “Thanks to technology, I’ve worked with clients all over the world,” she says. For example, one of Catherine’s clients lives in Thailand, which requires accommodating the 12-hour time difference. She usually schedules coaching sessions for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, leaving Mondays and Fridays for business planning and administrative tasks.
How to become one
People who are drawn to coaching often have common traits. They may be patient and empathic; enjoy helping others; and have strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Also important are decision making and problem-solving abilities, both of which may benefit from ingenuity. “Creativity is hugely valuable in coaching,” says Catherine. Credentials and training. Although there are no formal requirements for becoming a life coach, training and certification may make you stand out to future clients—especially as the occupation gains popularity among career options. Some colleges and universities offer courses in subjects related to life coaching. But the field is unregulated, so there are dozens of life coach training and certification programs in the United States. Legitimate credentialing organizations, such as the International Coach Federation, evaluate programs based on specific standards of ethics and competency. The federation also offers three levels of individual credentialing; Catherine holds the designation of Professional Certified Coach.

Life coaches who choose to become self-employed, as Catherine did, also must be prepared to run a business. Classes for small-business owners are available on topics such as accounting, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Networking and experience. Attending seminars and working with a mentor coach are other ways to further develop effective coaching techniques. And both activities offer opportunities for networking with other coaches, who can provide support and referrals—which are especially important for self-employed coaches trying to get established. For example, most of Catherine’s clients come to her by word of mouth from other coaches and colleagues in her networking group. It may be helpful to have knowledge of a field related to coaching, such as psychology. Similarly, some types of experience may be useful for carving a niche, such as management experience for leadership coaching. But having an extensive portfolio may not be as important as having a passion for the work. “You don’t necessarily need life experience in order to pursue a career in coaching,” Catherine says. “You just need to go and do it.”
What to expect
It’s professionally fulfilling to coach clients who achieve their goals. But it can also be isolating, especially for self-employed coaches. “If I don’t inject fun into other areas of my life,” says Catherine, “my routine can get a little stagnant.” The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect data specifically on life coaches. Instead, BLS counts these workers among rehabilitation counselors; educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors; and personal care and service workers, all other. Life coaches may work for organizations such as residential care or treatment facilities, aiding clients who want to overcome challenges. Self-employed coaches sometimes work as consultants or contractors for businesses that offer life coaching as a wellness perk to employees.

Life coaches assist clients in establishing goals, such as changing careers or losing weight, but their work centers around the process: offering targeted guidance and motivation to meet those goals. According to an International Coach Federation report, the 2016 ICF Global Coaching Study, there were about 17,500 coach practitioners in North America in 2015. Coach practitioners, a designation that excludes athletic or sports coaches, reported an average annual income from coaching of about $61,900. (The median annual wage for all workers was $36,200 in May 2015, according to BLS.) But the federation also reports that few coach practitioners work exclusively as coaches. he unemployment rate for people with physical handicaps is 50% higher than for the able-bodied, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, people with disabilities now have more occupational opportunities than ever before, due to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), adaptive technology, and workat-home employment through the Internet. This article will discuss 10 of the many career choices particularly well-suited to people with hearing, vision, or mobility impairments. First, how does the ADA define a physical disability and what are those who meet the qualifications entitled to? The ADA defines a physical impairment as something that impacts a “major life activity” of a person, such as caring for self, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, or sleeping. Employers are required to provide reasonable modifications to the work environment that enable a disabled person to perform his or her job duties. This can include a wheelchair ramp, adaptive computer technology, or accommodation of a service animal. Employers also must ensure disabled persons have the same rights and privileges as their non-disabled co-workers. Accommodations are intended to be a negotiation between management and employee. Tax incentives are available for employers who provide jobs for the disabled. A poll by Louis Harris points to a high level of satisfaction among employers of the disabled, with 39% responding that their disabled workers were more reliable than the non-disabled ones, and a further 42% saying the two types of employees were equally reliable. The careers below have been arranged alphabetically within four general categories: any type of physical disability; hearing impairment; vision impairment; and mobility impairment. Careers for the blind and visually impaired include most jobs the fully sighted person can do, though they might go about it a little differently. Computers with screen readers greatly enlarge the pool of job prospects for people with limited or no sight. Organizations like the Association for Blind Citizens can help legally blind job hunters purchase adaptive devices like portable barcode scanners to help them in the workplace and enhance their quality of life. One growing job field that often is a good fit for blind workers is call centers, since the work is done over the telephone.

MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT
People who use wheelchairs can do well in most office environments. Builders, architects, and business owners understand the importance of providing an accessible work environment that meets ADA specifications. Some businesses are also moving toward more telecommuting, meaning employees can work from home. Some general office jobs include manager, executive, director, secretary, and administrator. “Office jobs” in this context refers to positions where most of the work is performed at a fixed office location, so little travel is involved. This makes it easier for the disabled and their employer to ensure the work area is accessible and comfortable. The employment category of “office and administrative support” is expected to generate more jobs than any other field between now and 2020, according to the BLS. Below, we examine two specific office jobs with good income and potential for growth. Both relate to information technology (IT).

oing your job well is the most important contribution you can make to your organization and to your chances for advancement. But most enterprises in today’s competitive world need to constantly improve to remain profitable or effective. The experience and insights of the workforce are a valuable source for those improvements. Here are some things to keep an eye out for as potential opportunities to contribute to needed solutions: Failing equipment Bottlenecks in processes Complaints from customers Frequent or inconclusive meetings Grumbling among coworkers Unequal distribution of work or rewards
None of these is a guaranteed opportunity to shine. There may be good reasons why they exist; they may have been studied before and the solutions may be beyond the control of management. But some will be ripe for action, and even noting them and suggesting solutions will be a mark of alertness, insight, and motivation. How can one best prepare for identifying and taking advantage of these opportunities? The most basic method is continuous learning. Learn all you can about your organization, its missions, ideals, goals, and major activities. Keep up with technological developments in your field or industry so that you’ll be able to recommend new or different equipment, processes, or management techniques. For this it may be necessary to take courses offered by your organization or by outside educational or training institutions. You need to be a team player. You should offer to help an overburdened coworker and volunteer for extra assignments if you can handle them without detriment to your regular work. You should look for things that waste your group’s time or harm morale and think of ways to alleviate them. You should learn as much as you can about the jobs of colleagues in other organizations so that you can work more effectively with them. As important as what you do is what you don’t do. Don’t create the impression that you’re an overly eager beaver bent only on getting ahead. If suggestions are requested at meetings, offer them freely, crediting others for ideas you may have picked up from them. If you are volunteering unsolicited recommendations, meet with the boss privately so that you won’t be seen as upstaging him. Be generous with your praise and appreciation of your coworkers and don’t join the critical whispers about any of them or the boss. Criticism should be expressed one-to-one or in open meetings and always focused on positive solutions. I’m an aerospace engineering research professor. I work on research and mentor graduate students, but I also give speeches and do symposiums. I deal with budgets, hire faculty, and serve on a committee. There are a lot of elements to my work. Every day is different. Academia ensures that we educate the next generation of engineers and also continue the leading edge of research.
What kind of leading-edge research are you doing?
An area we desperately need research on for the future is advanced spacesuits. Not Hollywood-style astronaut clothing, but a suit designed for real human survival in an extreme environment. So when I was approached by my university and asked what I wanted to research, that’s what I identified. When you see an astronaut working on the International Space Station, that suit is like a spacecraft in the shape of a human. What a spacecraft has in it, that suit has, too. The problem is that you have to be mobile in it and be able to work with it on, and it has to fit well. We’ve spent 50 years optimizing it, but there’s still room to improve.
What improvements are you focusing on?
We want to make spacesuits more mobile. We have to reduce the mass, reduce the volume of all the life support systems in the suit. It’s called the “portable life support system,” but it could be a whole lot more portable. We’ve developed equations to model the dynamics of the motion of a person, and we have computer models that simulate soft tissue to predict injury. So we’ll be applying that research to the spacesuit to really enhance the design. Where there’s no answer, that’s where we put the research. I define research as: you search and search for the answer, and you keep re-searching.
We want to make spacesuits more mobile. We have to reduce the mass, reduce the volume of all the life support systems in the suit. It’s called the “portable life support system,” but it could be a whole lot more portable.
Tell me about your education and early career path.
I worked my way through college, first as a waitress, then at a canning plant. After I got my bachelor’s degree and was finally in a professional career, I was working for an aerospace manufacturing company and, for the first time, was earning a pretty good wage. I had been in that job for about 2 years when one of the department chairs from my alma mater called. He knew I eventually wanted to be an astronaut and said, “We just got this NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] grant that involves a new concept, the space shuttle, and you ought to come back for your master’s degree.” Well, he’d said the magic word: NASA. So I went back and got my master’s degree. Then I applied for the astronaut program and made the final 100 for the 1978 class, but I was not selected for that group. I looked at all the mission specialists who were selected and realized that they had doctoral or medical degrees. It was hard to compete if I didn’t have that. NASA offered me a job at mission control, which I accepted. While I was working full time at NASA, I also went to school part time to get my Ph.D. and applied again—successfully, this time—to become an astronaut.
How does your experience tie in with your current job?
In aerospace engineering, we come from three different sectors, and I’ve worked in all three. I worked in private industry, helping to build the space shuttle; I was in the federal government, working for NASA as an astronaut and an engineer; then there’s academia. All three experiences have helped me to be a well-rounded professor. The fact that I worked in industry and government gives me a better perspective for my students. I can talk about what the expectations are from industry or tell them about what I did in the government and how projects and research are funded. And my doctoral degree taught me how to do research.

Communication skills are mandatory. When you go into companies as an engineer, you have to be able to communicate orally and in writing. Yes, there are engineers who don’t communicate well, but they also don’t progress as well. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can’t communicate it to anyone, it’s not going to go anywhere. Also, always try to learn from failure. Perseverance and commitment are helpful, but a willingness to learn from failure is critical. Many of our young people have, first of all, a real reluctance to admit something went wrong; and second, a real defensiveness about it. But there will be failures, so learn from them and don’t get defensive about them. Talk about mistakes so you can share experiences.
When did you learn to look at failure as something positive?
I’m the daughter of a farmer and rancher, so I learned that early on. You don’t have 100 percent success in farming and ranching, but you always try to learn from failure. NASA was always transparent about its failures. Ever since the beginning of the space program, any time we conducted a mission, we always conducted a “lessons learned” session afterward. We would talk about what failed and why it failed, and we’d get to the root cause: whether it was hardware, software, crew training, whatever. We documented all of that and carried it forward from flight to flight. I think that process contributed to the success of programs, because we didn’t keep repeating past failures. What do you like most about teaching? If I can touch at least one student’s life and get him or her excited about learning— engineering in particular—that’s very gratifying. That’s what education is all about. Throughout human history, it’s always been about educating the next generation. If we didn’t educate, we’d be back in caves.
What do you find challenging?
As an aerospace engineer, the challenges can be technical. But as a professor, you may deal with budget and management issues, and there’s great satisfaction in being able to work through these challenges successfully. I don’t look at challenges as a negative, though. For me, it’s a question of attitude. If there weren’t challenges, you wouldn’t learn. You learn to work through them to get to a better place. occupations. The surveys of businesses are typically collected by the states and BLS regional offices. Another set of BLS data helpful for career planning is projections of occupational and industry employment, the labor force and population, and the economy. BLS economists prepare national projections every 2 years, analyzing broad trends and examining hundreds of occupations and industries. States develop their own state-level projections using input from these BLS national projections. BLS has many other types of labor force data—and states use these data in different ways. For example, the BLS Current Employment Statistics survey publishes data on employment, earnings, and more. States may use these data to create a number of analyses of labor market conditions, such as for industry employment in a particular metropolitan statistical area.
Data from the states
All states have labor market information offices, although they may have different names and provide different kinds of information. A list of these offices is available on the BLS website. The U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration mandates that states publish both long-term and short-term projections. Although the periods differ by state, long-term projections usually cover 10 years and short-term projections are for 2 years. The state-level data are available online at Projections Central. In addition to statewide projections, state labor market data might include local projections, job postings, and other analyses.

Some states, such as Indiana, rank hot jobs by analyzing a number of factors about the labor market. But even if your state doesn’t produce a hot-jobs list, projections and other data can help you identify them. When considered together, strong projected growth, high wages, and strong current demand for an occupation may indicate a hot job.
Strong projected growth
Which occupations are projected to gain jobs? Which are expected to grow quickly? How many job openings can I expect? Projections data help to answer these questions. Projected job growth is shown both as a number of new jobs and as a rate of growth for an occupation. For the nation as a whole, the occupation of personal care aides is projected to gain the most jobs (more than 450,000) between 2014 and 2024; employment of wind turbine service technicians is projected to grow the fastest (at a rate of 108 percent over the decade). Hover over the map to see the occupations that each state and the District of Columbia project to have the most new jobs and to grow the fastest. Another way to answer questions about opportunities in an occupation is by looking at the number of expected job openings. Projected job openings include both new jobs and those that arise from the need to replace current workers who are leaving the occupation. New jobs. Numeric change indicates how many jobs an occupation is projected to gain or lose over the projections period. Occupations expected to gain the most jobs are often those that already have large numbers of workers. For example, applications software developers in Washington—one of the largest occupations in the state—topped the list in the number of new jobs projected. In Nebraska, the occupation of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is projected to add the most jobs; it’s also the second largest in the state. Rate of growth. This rate shows, in percentage terms, how fast the number of jobs in an occupation is projected to change. Fast growth, however, does not always mean many new jobs. For example, South Carolina projects employment of commercial divers to grow by about 43 percent from 2014 to 2024, the fastest of any occupation in that state. But

because the occupation has small employment, that growth yields about 30 new jobs over the projections decade. Job openings. How much or how fast an occupation is projected to grow may not be as important to you as the number of job openings expected in it. As mentioned previously, projected job openings arise not just from growth but also from the need to replace workers who leave an occupation permanently for some reason, such as to retire. For example, Massachusetts data show that on Cape Cod and the Islands, more than 200 job openings are projected per year from 2014 to 2024 for retail salespersons—the most for any occupation there.
the occupation. Nationally, the mean annual wage for all occupations was $48,320 in 2015, according to BLS; the median annual wage was $36,200. Mean wages. A mean is an average. Mean wages are calculated by adding the wages of all the workers in a given occupation and then dividing the total wages by the number of workers in the occupation. For example, in the New Haven, Connecticut, metropolitan statistical area, high school teachers had a mean annual wage of $76,280. By comparison, all workers in that area had a mean wage of $53,680. Median wages. The median wage is the point at which half the workers in a given occupation earned more than the median, and half earned less. For example, in the St. Louis metropolitan area, personal financial advisors had a median annual wage of $90,420. That compares with a median wage of $36,530 for all workers in that area.

What is the job market like right now? Are employers hiring? Which occupations have the most openings per jobseeker? Data analyses of labor market activity can help to answer these questions. Occupations that are currently in high demand may vary by state. Information that highlights opportunities where you want to work is helpful if you’re looking for a job now or in the near future. Job postings. Some states publish data on the number of job postings to show occupations for which employers are seeking to hire. For example, applications software developers, marketing managers, and web developers had the most online job postings in the San Francisco, California, area in October 2016. Other analyses. Supply-and-demand studies are another way that some states present information about the current labor market. For example, you may be able to assess how many job openings exist for each jobseeker by comparing the potential supply of labor (such as by looking at unemployment claimants or recent graduate data) with the demand for labor (such as with job postings).

A median wage is more helpful for showing what is typical, because it is less likely to be influenced by either very high or very low wages within
