eoejournal Editorial Comment From www.dictionary.com: Pendulum theory, also called Pendulum law: 1. a law, discovered by Galileo in 1602, that describes the regular, swinging motion of a pendulum by the action of gravity and acquired momentum. 2. the theory holding that trends in culture, politics, etc., tend to swing back and forth between opposite extremes.

My

friend, Erica, recently broke up with her longtime boyfriend and immediately swore off all men claiming, “Men stink! I will never date again,” even though a month earlier she was quietly anticipating his proposal and being married to him. Erica’s emotions remind me that the “pendulum theory” is alive and well in our daily lives. I know Erica is hurting and her judgement pendulum is overcompensating to make her feel better in the moment. And I’m trying to be a good friend and listen... but I know (from more than a few decades of experience), that she will eventually swing back the other way and be more logical about her feelings towards men in general and live to date again. I know this like I know I’m having tuna fish for lunch. And that comforts me. It comforts me to know that an extreme, even after a momentary swing to the opposite side, has a way of coming back to the middle. To stay open-minded, Erica may not swing all the way back to her original beliefs about men. She may settle on a stance somewhere between her original belief and this new one, which can be viewed as healthy. This new stance is the assimilation of newly found knowledge, the integration of a lesson learned. I’m a huge believer in the pendulum theory and see examples all the time. It can help one cope with extremes by knowing the pendulum law won’t let them stay too far to one side or the other for very long.

Why Hire Disabled Workers? 4 Powerful and Inclusive Companies Answer

T

he disability community, from grassroots advocates to powerful cross disability organizations, devotes a lot of time and energy to prove the value of hiring disabled workers. It is a common theme in our community and extremely necessary as there are a number of workforce related challenges that workers with disabilities face. The unemployment rate for workers with disabilities is twice of those without. It is still legal for workers with disabilities to be paid well below the minimum wage based on a law that dates back to 1936. Unfortunately this was a time when disabilities were even more horribly misunderstood.

Research is also shown that organizations that employ people with disabilities have higher morale and employee engagement which all drives profitability.

Page 4

While the Americans with Disabilities Act provides vital protections to the disabled workforce, it can’t solve every issue. There is a systemic problem of fewer opportunities for advancement for workers with disabilities. One theme, which is commonly discussed, is that employment of disabled workers is the right thing to do. Providing equal opportunity is providing equal rights; it’s moral and ethical. However, from the perspective of businesses that perpetuate discrimination in their hiring and retention of workers with disabilities, this message isn’t enough. What if we look to disability employment from a business perspective instead of from an advocacy perspective? There are many businesses that are leading the way in promoting an inclusive workplace. Businesses can be proud of the advancements they have made in hiring workers with disabilities. What makes him so passionate about hiring disabled workers? These are some of the most successful businesses in the country and have recognized that being inclusive of disability in hiring, retention and promotion has been the right thing to do. These are all fortune 1000 companies that have scored 100 points on the U.S. Business Leadership Networks Disability Equality Index. The two questions they were asked are; how do recruiting, retaining and promoting employees with disabilities make good business sense? How do they improve a business productivity and profitability?

Workers with Disabilities

If you are one of the many consumers of Starbucks coffee you are also supporting one of the most advanced employers of workers with disabilities. Starbucks states that creating a culture of belonging is one of their core values. The company boasts thorough accommodations for workers with disabilities such as interpretation services and accessible software. In 2015 they participated in an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ADA.

“When we hire for Starbucks we think beyond labels. We challenge ourselves to look beyond traditional sources and typical profiles, to bring in people that share our values and passion for the community. There is no better example than our commitment to hiring people with disabilities. These talented professionals bring unique experiences that foster innovation and new ideas while contributing to a culture of warmth and inclusion. We work across multiple business teams to collaborate and inspire partners to embrace accessibility as a global value of Starbucks. We are continually inspired by their diversity and inclusion of our people.” As one of the top contractors to the United States government, Northrup Grumman not

only supports the needs of the military, but also supports many of the millions of Americans with disabilities in the workforce who want meaningful employment. They foster beneficial business relationships between other minority owned businesses and their own including many businesses owned by persons with disabilities. In addition to these programs Northrop Grumman is also committed to disabled service members.

They created an award-winning Operation Impact program, a wounded warrior program designed to support the most severely injured service members or their primary caregiver. They provide career readiness and placement assistance as well as post transition support to all candidates. They have established a group of more than 110 companies and partners that share job candidates, best practices and create wider opportunities for veterans with disabilities. They are committed to creating a work environment that values diversity and inclusion because it creates innovation, improves productivity and boost profitability. People with disabilities are important component of a diverse pool of talent and we are determined to draw from this valuable resource.

“We actively seek to hire disabled employees because of the tremendous value they bring to the workplace. They’ve recently added new online accommodation tools for requests and case tracking; increased accessibility of her Internet website, including the careers section; expanded accessibility at our locations; and we have adopted a more focused approach for posting job requisitions with disability -related job boards.”

Disabled Workers

AT&T is not only a top telecommunication corporation in the world, but a model for programs that support the disabled workforce. They are particularly successful in their implementation of diversity programs. They not only weave accessibility and inclusion into the fabric of their business, but they produce special opportunities for the disadvantaged disable workforce to get ahead. “AT&T is a company where everyone’s differences are authentically embraced, valued and vital to our business. People with disabilities are no exception. We ensure an accessible environment so employees can win at work and offer the accessibility products and services to our customers. We seek to find and hire college

graduate students with disabilities and we play a big role in ensuring that we continue to stay ahead of the issues that this community faces.” Ernst and Young, a global leader in professional services, is proud of their mission to embrace all abilities. The company was built by

a founder with a disability Arthur Young. Their commitment to disability inclusion ranges from signing on to the Business Task force On Excess abilities Charter to a variety of other programs, which give employees the resources, they need to develop their skills and advocate for accessible policies and disability awareness in the workplace. Ernst & Young seeks the best talent. To find specialized skills we need, we tapped the broadest available talent pools including people with a wide range of physical, cognitive and mental health abilities. We know that diverse teams produce better solutions so there is a clear advantage to bring people together with all kinds of differences. Differences in gender, ethnicity, orientation, age, background and abilities. Employees with disabilities have higher retention rates, so for many businesses, there can be a real cost savings to reduced turnover. Studies show that consumers prefer doing business with companies that employ people with disabilities, so there’s brand value. Research is also shown that organizations that employ people with disabilities have higher morale and employee engagement which all drives profitability. “People with disabilities often have well honed problem-solving skills and a good degree of adaptability that are especially valuable in today’s fast changing business environment. We learned this early in our history as our cofounder; Arthur Young was deaf and had low vision. Unable to practice as a courtroom lawyer because of his disabilities, he became an innovator and entrepreneur.” In summary, these companies are not only extremely successful in their fields but powerful models of disability inclusion that make compelling arguments for greater disability workforce inclusion. They not only reject outdated ideas that disabled workers or liabilities, but actively promote the perspective that workers of all abilities bring different strengths to the company’s mission. Businesses that embrace disability inclusion have found that there is a positive correlation between their profitability, employee morale and engagement. These businesses report lower turnover, better safety records, innovation and higher productivity among their employees with disabilities. For customer facing companies, there is a side benefit of customer loyalty from America’s largest minority group, numbering 56.7 million Americans. Article provided by ushf.org

The Best Ways to Gain Project Management Experience by Paul Maplesden

roject management is one of the very best skill-sets that a person can learn in modern business. The basic principles of project management can be applied to almost any sector, industry or area and are essential in helping businesses to develop new products and services, improve their processes and avoid risks. In this article we’ll explore some of the ways that you can enhance your project management experience. Because project management is a vast field with hundreds of different techniques, multiple frameworks, varied approaches and a broad range of skills, any experience that you can get in projects will improve your chances of becoming a project manager.

Get project management training

There are thousands of courses that can teach you about general project management or that focus on specific techniques and frameworks. Whether you self-study, complete courses online, attend a training course or get training in some other way, these courses can be extremely helpful. You might also want to see if your business or organization will fund your training.

ll too often, job seekers make one critical but easily avoidable mistake. More specifically, those job candidates focus on what they need, from the salary level they hope to achieve to the number of vacation days they hope to earn. With all this focus on the needs of the job seeker, the needs of the company doing the hiring are often lost in the shuffle. No matter what the industry or what past experience, it is important to remember that hiring is always a two-way street. From the most basic entry-level position to the leadership role in the corner office, the most successful candidates are the ones who put the needs of their potential employers first. Becoming a problem solver is one of the most effective job hunting strategies there is. Finding problems your new employer did not even know they had and offering new and innovative ways to solve them is a sure way to set you apart from the competition and show the hiring manager that you bring something special to the table. Most companies are understandably reluctant to publicize their shortcomings or broadcast their problems. Even so, a bit of sleuthing can provide important clues you can use to identify those weaknesses and find unique ways to resolve them. From reading articles in the general press and scanning investment sites and connecting with former employees through social media, there are plenty of ways to uncover the hidden problems that your future employer may not be aware of. Once you uncover those hidden weaknesses, you can start working on ideas to fix them. You will, however, need to be a big oblique when discussing those shortcomings. Starting a conversation by talking about all the things that are wrong with the company will not win you any friends, so you will need to engage in a bit of positive spinning. If your research unveiled dozens of complaints about underpayment and a lack of promotional opportunities, you could describe your past experience and how you helped an old employer create a new compensation structure. If the company has been losing ground it competitors on social media, you could point out your online experience and how it could help your new employer project a more positive brand image. Solving problems is a big part of any job, from the most basic to the most complex. Every new hire provides employers with a new way to solve their current problems - and identify new ones they may not have yet identified. Learning to become a problem solver for your new employer is one of the best ways to boost your chances and become a superstar performer. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

4 Simple Ways to Conquer Your To-Do List

D

id you know that in an average week, 75 percent of Americans skip doing something for themselves because they didn’t adequately plan or allow enough time for it? Does looking at your to-do list feel so daunting that it discourages you from making any progress at all? You’re not alone. A new Postit Brand productivity study found that more than 1 in 4 Americans feel completing everything in their weekly to-do list is harder than running a marathon. Juggling multiple tasks at one time, along with a never-ending to-do list, is a common challenge for everyone - even those at the top of their game. Two professionals in the culinary and fitness industries share some of their tips to help you take control of your to-do list and increase your productivity.

of a project, take time to break down to-dos into digestible actions, and goals into specific, manageable categories and tasks. This allows you to focus on handling each of these smaller objectives so you can transition some goals from to-do to done.

The ‘Write’ Way

If you find your current strategy isn’t working, don’t be afraid to switch it up. Go for a walk or clear your head by taking 15 minutes to do something you enjoy. For worldrenowned fitness artist and celebrity trainer Nicole Winhoffer, even a 10-minute jog can help bring fresh ideas. She uses Post-it List Notes to write down her post-workout inspirational thoughts. “When you come back to your task after that quick sweat session, write down the first things that come to mind - those can spark ideas that you might never have thought of.” Post-it Brand created a quiz to help you learn more about your listmaking style and to find solutions and tools to help you be productive, tackle your to-do lists and achieve your goals. Visit www.post-it.com/ quiz to take the short quiz and find solutions tailored for you to boost your productivity.

You’re 42 percent more likely to get something done if you write it down, according to research from the Dominican University of California. Creating a to-do list is an efficient way to visualize and prioritize your tasks, both shortterm and long-term. Celebrity chef Russell Jackson is always looking for ways to be more productive and stay inspired. “Writing items down helps me feel that I’ve taken the first step in conquering the task,” he says. “I like to think of lists as a roadmap to help me visualize what I need to achieve.” Post-it Super Sticky Notes, 4 inches x 6 inches, are a perfect tool for jotting down tasks, goals and to-dos, and when paired with flags and tabs, it’s easy to keep important information at your fingertips, stay organized and take your to-do list wherever you go!

Break it Down

Too often people attempt to improve their productivity by tackling large projects in a single session. The results may be disappointing and, in many cases, the project is left unfinished. Instead of getting bogged down in the entire scope

Toss Your Tech

“Technology isn’t always the answer to checking things off your to-do list,” says Jackson, adding that even a tech lover such as himself needs a tactile method to spark creativity. Without a screen limiting you to seeing only the small tasks at hand, take advantage of a large surface and use Easel Pads to move big ideas around so you can see everything you are trying to accomplish. Seeing how fluid tasks can be can relieve some stress.

he benefits of travel have been written about for centuries, connecting the experience with cultivating awareness and expanding perspectives. The story of travel connotes a journey of self-discovery. The introduction of every new culture is the beginning of a new mindset. For many, travel is at once a decentering and unifying experience. The encounter of something new leads to being fully present, evaluating preconceptions and rewiring beliefs. The effects of travel on adults is well documented. But how does travel affect children, who rely so much on stability and who, in many ways, already live in the moment, and experience the world with eyes wide open? Does the disruption of place hinder or complement a child’s intellectual development? It’s been eight years since the U.S. Department of Education took a closer look at the effects of travel on childhood education. In a 2009 study, which analyzed findings from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of the Kindergarten Class database, family life was assessed, as were summer activities and school experiences. The study collected data from 21,600 children from grades K-5; a subset of 5,047 parents also were asked about their family excursions during the summer. Study results showed improved standardized test scores in reading, math and general knowledge from the children who traveled during the summer with their families. The study findings are important because they provide an alternative to learning loss in kids during the long summer months away from school. Kids who don’t engage in activities during the summer are at risk of falling more than four months behind their peers. This statistic goes all the way up the ladder to college students. Today, many parents consider the arc of the travel experience - seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, attending concerts and visiting historic sites, monuments and art museums - as an opportunity to not only enhance the emotional depth and patience of their children, but their academic outcomes as well. As a result, some parents are opting to “world school” their children during the summer, with noted benefits of bonding and spending quality time with family, building an interest and respect for other cultures, and making learning interesting and deeply engaging. Can we simply conclude that vacations make kids smarter? We reached out to travel expert Jim Menge for the answer. Menge has been to more than 100 countries, and is a believer of the benefits of travel. Menge is also the President of Rovia, an industry-leading travel and lifestyle service provider, headquartered in Plano, Texas. “Not necessarily,” Menge says. “But the immersive experience of travel and all the delight and disruption that go along with it can have a real effect on childhood learning. And when kids start early, they broaden their horizons, and develop a real appreciation for the world they live in. If summer travel can have such a profound influence over the intellectual development of kids in grades K-5, what effect, if any, does it have on college students? In the year 2000, the University System of Georgia, comprising 35 institutions, conducted a 10-year study to see if study abroad contributed to the academic performance of college students. They found the experience not only resulted in improved academic performance, higher GPAs and graduation rates, but it benefited the performance of at-risk students as well. Clearly, travel and education can create powerful combinations. If you have children, consider taking a vacation over school breaks and during summer months. It will add to their development and character. And if you have kids in college, study abroad has become an even more compelling option. The shared experience of travel can bring families together, creating bonds and lifelong memories. It’s time to consider the data that promotes travel as the ticket to a world of increased engagement and enhanced academic performance. Bon voyage! Article provided by www.brandpointcontent.com

Your First Year As a Nurse by Donna Cardillo, RN, MA

our journey through nursing school has been long and arduous but an end is finally in sight. As you approach graduation you experience a strange mix of relief and panic. The realities of what lies ahead as a professional nurse start to creep in making it hard to breath. You question yourself asking, Did I make the right decision to become a nurse? Do I have what it takes to succeed? These feelings are normal and are experienced by all new graduates. Here are seven strategies that will help you survive, and even thrive, during your first year as a nurse and beyond.

Immerse yourself in the community of nursing

No one succeeds alone and that certainly is true of nurses, especially new nurses. That means you have to develop alliances, support systems, and lifelines. You need to get and stay connected to the bigger “family” of nurses. In other words, you have to immerse yourself in the community of nursing. How Have realistic expectations can you do that? Be proactive with your training and orientation

The nurse educator, your preceptor, and your manager will likely have an agenda for you to move through during your orientation program. However, you should play an active, rather than passive, role in the process. If you know of a certain procedure being done that you need or want experience with, ask to observe and assist. Better yet, ask to perform the procedure with an experienced nurse. If there is something that is not often done on your unit but you need experience with such as tracheostomy care or suctioning, ask if you can visit another unit to get that experience. If you see or hear of an interesting patient, ask to be assigned to him or her.

role. Don’t forget to acknowledge help and support when you get it from anyone and say “thank you.” Offer to help others whenever you can. You don’t have to be clinically competent to assist with a procedure, help in turning or transporting a patient, or running to grab some supplies or make a phone call. If you take the initiative to help other people, others will reciprocate without your even asking.

preferable not to ask questions in front of patients and preferably not during tense or critical moments. If you have not done a particular procedure, say so beforehand. You might phrase it this way: “I haven’t done this before. You’ll have to walk me through it.” I was once left alone with a thoracic surgeon on the night shift in the emergency room. He needed to perform a thoracotomy on a critically ill patient and asked me to set up a complicated suction/drainage system. I was a novice nurse and had never even observed this procedure. I had to tell him that up front. Although he was at first a little taken aback, he regained his composure and walked me through the whole procedure telling me exactly what he wanted me do. People appreciate knowing that up front. Was I sacred to admit I didn’t know what to do? I was terrified. But a life was at stake and I had no choice. At least I now knew what to do next time the situation arose. It’s all part of the learning process.

• Chronic conditions. More people in the United States are expected to seek treatment for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Additional workers are expected to be needed to help prevent, manage, and treat the health concerns associated with these conditions. • Medical advances. Improvements in medicine and technology also are expected to increase demand for healthcare services, creating more jobs for the workers who provide these services. • Health insurance reform. As more people get health insurance coverage, the number of people seeking routine medical care is expected to grow. In turn, more jobs are projected to be added for workers who treat these people.

Getting started in healthcare

There are lots of ways to start a career in healthcare. Specific skills, education and training, and other preparation—such as licenses, certification, or registration—are often required.

Skills

Over the decade, the U.S. population is projected to increase by about 9 percent. A larger population requires more healthcare services. 4.1 million jobs. Several factors are expected to lead to this growth, including the following: • A growing population. Over the decade, the U.S. population is projected to increase by about 9 percent. A larger population requires more healthcare services, leading to projected job growth in the industry. • More people who are older. The number of people ages 65 and older is projected to grow by about 40 percent between 2012 and 2022—the fastest of any age group. Compared with younger people, older people typically have greater healthcare needs. As a result, the healthcare industry is expected to add jobs.

Good people skills are essential, because workers in the healthcare industry spend a lot of time interacting with patients and colleagues. Workers also need patience and emotional stability. “You really have to care about people,” says Brummett. “It’s that compassion, that empathy, that makes people good at their jobs.” It’s also important to be a team player, as these workers collaborate when delivering care. Being able to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds is also key.

Education and training

Building the foundation for a career in healthcare often starts long before you prepare for a specific occupation. As early as high school, you should study algebra, biology, chemistry, and related subjects. “Taking math and science classes is important to just about any health profession,” says Adams. In addition, most occupations in healthcare require education beyond high school. But the paths people take to enter an occupation vary. For example, there are several ways to become a registered nurse. Many registered nurses prepare by earning an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. Other registered nurses earn a diploma from an approved nursing program or a master’s degree in nursing. There are lots of education programs for careers in healthcare. Make sure a school’s credentials are up to date and that their program has a good reputation before you sign up. “Do your research,” says Hahn. “You don’t want to pay more than you should for a degree you need, only to find out that no hospital will sponsor you for a residency.” In addition to education, some healthcare occupations require on-the-job training—such as a residency, employer-sponsored training program, or informal training combined with experience on the job. Other occupations require work experience in a related occupation.

Occupations in healthcare

At UCLA Health, passion drives excellence. UCLA Health and David Geffen School of Medicine is home to some of the most talented professionals from all over the world. Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the nation’s #5 hospital, we take immense pride in the gifted specialists that raise our standards of quality. We also encourage excellence in all our fields because only world-class talent can enable the world-class care for which we’re known. At UCLA Health, we’re proud to honor our remarkable quality of professionals.

We have a variety of positions available in the following areas: • Nursing • Allied Health • Laboratory • Nutrition

• Environmental Services • Materials Management • Pharmacy • Information Technology

• Security • Rehab Services • Ambulatory Clinics • Research

In addition to offering many opportunities, the healthcare industry offers plenty of career options. Workers in healthcare do tasks such as scheduling patient appointments, drawing blood for laboratory work, cleaning facilities, preparing food, diagnostic testing, and filling prescriptions. Text and accompanying charts in this section highlight employment, wages, and projected new jobs in selected occupations for each of the detailed healthcare industries. May 2013 employment and wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics survey and are for wage and salary workers only. (The median wage is the point at which half of all wage and salary workers in the occupation made more than that amount, and half earned less.) Occupations listed below by occupational group include those that had at least 50,000 jobs in May 2013. Many other occupations have jobs in these detailed industries too, but they had fewer jobs and are not listed. The highest and lowest wages discussed are for occupations with 1,000 jobs or more in a detailed industry in May 2013. For comparison purposes, the median annual wage for wage and salary workers across all industries in May 2013 was $35,080.

Occupations in hospitals are diverse. However, occupations with the most projected jobs probably include ones you’d expect to find in this setting. Jobs in hospitals are often shift-based, with weekend and holiday work sometimes required, because hospitals provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Registered nurse Heather Hahn, for example, works a 12-hour shift 3 days a week, mostly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every 4 weeks she works nights for a week.

Occupational wages

According to BLS, May 2013 median annual wages in hospitals ranged from $20,850 for restaurant, lounge, and coffee shop hosts and hostesses to more than $187,200 (the highest median annual wage published by BLS) for surgeons, chief executives, anesthesiologists, and obstetricians and gynecologists. But hospitals also have many high-paying occupations. At least 11 occupations in the health diagnosing and treating practitioners group, for example, had median annual wages of more than $100,000 in hospitals in May 2013.

Page 19

Projected new jobs BLS projects hospitals to add about 826,000 jobs between 2012 and 2022. Nearly one-third—about 262,000 jobs— are expected to be for registered nurses. In addition to the occupations in the chart, others that are projected to add many jobs in hospitals between 2012 and 2022 include radiologic technologists, maids and housekeeping cleaners, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and medical and clinical laboratory technicians.

ach workday, the average American spends 8.8 hours at work or on work-related activities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s even more time than people spend sleeping. And because we spend so much time at work, it’s in your and your employer’s best interest to make workplaces the happiest environment it can be. Workplace comfort and happiness is highly impactful in retention and recruitment, as well as an individual’s productivity, satisfaction and ultimately, a company’s or business’s ROI. It’s not just free snacks, pizza or bagel Fridays, big windows or colorful conference rooms and ping pong tables. In fact, there’s a science behind what drives happiness in the workplace and what can be done to achieve it, through light, furniture, ergonomics and movement. To ensure both employers and employees can create and maintain an ideal workplace environment, Dr. Mike O’Neill, lead global researcher of workplace strategy and market analytics at Haworth, a leading furniture company based in Holland, MI, shares five tips to improve the happiness of your work environment.

If you have an important meeting coming up or you’re under a lot of stress, cleaning your workspace can help. A clean workspace allows you to arrive and immediately get to your most important task without wasting time. Plugging devices in to charge, color coding your files, even filling or cleaning your water bottle the night before can help. The more organized your workstation, the more organized you’ll be to start your day. For employers, ensure your employees have streamlined and legible space. Workstations tailored to individual and group tasks help to promote legibility in the workplace, with clear indications of space designed to promote certain activities.

2. Adjust Your Workspace to Fit You

Whether it’s a height-adjustable work surface, an ergonomic chair or even a wrist base for your keyboard, simple comforts can have a monumental impact on your

By 2024, BLS projects that the labor force will grow to about 164 million people. That number includes about 41 million people who will be ages 55 and older—of whom about 13 million are expected to be ages 65 and older. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), about 40 percent of people ages 55 and older were working or actively looking for work in 2014. That number, known as a labor force participation rate, is expected to increase fastest for the oldest segments of the population—most notably, people ages 65 to 74 and 75 and older—through 2024. In contrast, participation rates for most other age groups in the labor force aren’t projected to change much over the 2014–24 decade. Keep reading to learn more about the changing age composition of the labor force. You’ll find BLS data on older workers, including occupations in which they’re concentrated and career options such as self-employment and part-time jobs. If you’re considering something different for a later-in-life career, this information might give you some ideas.

A changing labor force

The labor force is people ages 16 and older who are either working or actively looking for work. It excludes active-duty military personnel and the institutionalized population, such as prison inmates. BLS data reveal how the age makeup of the U.S. labor force is changing. From 1970 until the end of the 20th century, older workers—which BLS defines as those ages 55 and older—made up the smallest segment of the labor force. In the 1990s, however, these older workers began to increase their share of the labor force, while workers in younger age groups started to have declines in their labor force shares. And by 2003, the older age group no longer had the smallest share. By 2024, BLS projects that the labor force will grow to about 164 million people. That number includes about 41 million people who will be ages 55 and older—of whom about 13 million are expected to be ages 65 and older. And, although they make up a smaller number of workers overall, the 65- to 74-year-old and 75-and-older age groups are projected to have faster rates of labor force growth annually than any other age groups. Over the entire 2014–24 decade, the labor force growth rate of the 65- to 74-year-old age group is expected to be about 55, and the labor force growth rate of the 75-and-older age group is expected to be about 86 percent, compared with a 5-percent increase for the labor force as a whole. This increase is being fueled by the aging baby-boom generation, a large group of people born between 1946 and 1964. By 2024, baby boomers will have reached ages 60 to 78.

And some of them are expected to continue working even after they qualify for Social Security retirement benefits. People are working later in life for a number of reasons. They are healthier and have a longer life expectancy than previous generations. They are better educated, which increases their likelihood of staying in the labor force. And changes to Social Security benefits and employee retirement plans, along with the need to save more for retirement, create incentives to keep working.

Later-in-life career options

With people staying in the labor force longer, planning for a career later in life may be increasingly important. Here are a few options to consider if you’re looking to do something new.

Occupations with older workers

Maybe you’ve spent your career in an office and would love to get into the outdoors. Or perhaps you’re retiring as a teacher and would prefer to get a job giving tours of a local museum.

People are working later in life for a number of reasons. They are healthier and have a longer life expectancy than previous generations. They are better educated, which increases their likelihood of staying in the labor force. Workers ages 55 and older were employed across many types of occupations in 2016, according to BLS. More than 42 percent of these workers were in management, professional, and related occupations, a somewhat higher proportion than that for all workers. BLS data can also show where older workers are concentrated. In each of the following selected occupations, workers ages 55 and older made up at least one-third of the occupation’s total employment in 2016: Archivists, curators, and museum technicians Bus drivers Clergy Furniture finishers Jewelers and precious stone and metal workers Legislators Medical transcriptionists Proofreaders and copy markers Property, real estate, and association managers Real estate brokers and sales agents Tax preparers Travel agents

Self-employment

Self-employment is an option that may offer increased flexibility and autonomy. If you’ve always wanted to be your own boss, what kind of business might you like to own? Would you rather freelance, perhaps as a gig worker BLS data show that workers in older age groups have higher rates of self-employment than do workers in younger groups. Knowledge and resources gained through years of experience may put older workers in a good position to work for themselves. Selected occupations in which self-employment was common in 2016, according to BLS, include: Animal trainers Craft artists Door-to-door sales workers, news and street vendors, and related workers Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers

Perhaps you enjoy your job but would prefer fewer hours. Maybe you’re counting on a little income to pay for a favorite hobby. Consider joining the ranks of part-timers, an option many workers pursue to stay active. BLS data show that about 27 percent of workers ages 55 and older, and 18 percent of workers ages 25 to 54, were part time (usually 1 to 34 hours per week) in 2016. For workers ages 65 and older, the rate of part-time employment is even higher: 40 percent. Plenty of jobs can be part time. Here are selected occupations with relatively high percentages of part-time workers in 2016, according to BLS: Amusement and recreation attendants Cashiers Combined food preparation and serving workers, including fast food Counter attendants, cafeteria, food concession, and coffee shop Crossing guards Dental hygienists Embalmers and funeral attendants Hosts and hostesses, restaurant, lounge, and coffee shop Library technicians Models, demonstrators, and product promoters Transportation attendants, except flight attendants Ushers, lobby attendants, and ticket takers.

Thinking about a Career in Healthcare?

M

edical professionals are in greater demand than ever before, and that’s not likely to change anytime soon. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), by the year 2025, the United States could need as many as 90,000 more physicians than it actually has, and the demand for nurses and other health professionals could be even higher. Given those numbers, the time couldn’t be better to consider a career in health care. Historically, the path toward becoming a doctor or nurse has been a rigid one - and, as a student, you were either on that path or you weren’t. But today, new options are opening up, as even the best-established medical schools seek to expand their offerings and encourage a greater number of medically inclined students to enter the field professionally.

New options for healthcareinclined students of all ages

Just take what Harvard Medical School is doing. This spring, the school–whose typical acceptance rate is under 4 percent–announced its first-ever online certificate program that’s open to all aspiring clinicians as well as the general public. The program, called HMX Fundamentals, is designed to give students a taste of what a top-tier medical education entails, while building crucial expertise in four foundational subject areas: Immunology, Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics. These highly immersive courses emphasize real-world applications and experiences, integrating reallife case studies and offering a first-hand look into real medical facilities–a significant step beyond the traditional, passive learning and slide-show presentations that are common in some other online programs. The idea is to provide foundational knowledge in a meaningful context, making the information as relevant as possible. By offering wider access than ever before to some of the school’s top physician-scientists, Harvard Medical is hoping to change the game, and encourage more health-curious students and professionals to explore medicine seriously. Whether you’re a highly motivated high school student, a recent college graduate or a young professional considering a transition into health care, this summer’s HMX Fundamentals program could be the first step in your path toward a career in medicine.

Expanding access without sacrificing quality

While HMX Fundamentals courses are open to students at virtually any phase of their academic or professional career, they do require a basic understanding of chemistry, biology and physics. To ensure that students are prepared to succeed, prospective students are asked to submit a brief application, both to confirm they’ve completed the recommended prerequisites and to give HMX a sense of what they hope to achieve through the program. Applications for the program will be accepted through May 30, and the inaugural summer installment program will begin June 20. Tuition for HMX Fundamentals courses is tiered, beginning at $800 for a single course or $1000 for a two-course bundle. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis. Mechanical engineers typically do the following: • Analyze problems to see how mechanical and thermal devices might help solve a particular problem • Design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices or subsystems, using analysis and computer-aided design • Develop and test prototypes of devices they design • Analyze the test results and change the design or system as needed • Oversee the manufacturing process for the device

Mechanical engineers design and oversee the manufacture of many products ranging from medical devices to new batteries. Mechanical engineers design power-producing machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Mechanical engineers design other machines inside buildings, such as elevators and escalators. They also design material-handling systems, such as conveyor systems and automated transfer stations. Like other engineers, mechanical engineers use computers extensively. Mechanical engineers are routinely responsible for the integration of sensors, controllers, and machinery. Computer technology helps mechanical engineers create and analyze designs, run simulations and test how a machine is likely to work, interact with connected systems, and generate specifications for parts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Mechanical engineers held about 277,500 jobs in 2014. The largest employers of mechanical engineers were as follows: Engineering services 19% Machinery manufacturing 15% Computer and electronic product manufacturing 7% Research and development in the physical, engineering, and life sciences 6% Aerospace product and parts manufacturing 6% Mechanical engineers generally work in offices. They may occasionally visit worksites where a problem or piece of equipment needs their personal attention. In most settings, they work with other engineers, engineering technicians, and other professionals as part of a team.

obs in manufacturing include positions working on the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. Most companies in the manufacturing world have plants, factories, or mills where employees are involved in the production of goods and materials.

Technology Could Replace Some Workers

Because of technological advances reducing the need for workers, this is one of the sectors where the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment to decline slightly, by approximately three percent. The median annual wage for production occupations was $32,250 in May 2015, which was lower than the median annual wage for all occupations of $36,200. Some positions are higher paying union jobs -- usually skilled positions -- while other unskilled positions typically pay lower wages.

Training Could Improve Job Security

Educational requirements vary significantly based on the job. Some positions may provide on-the-job training, while others may require a college degree. Although technology may contribute to the decline in some positions, education or certification in a technical area may improve your chances of job security.

Practically Every Role Under the Sun

Manufacturing plants and factories need more than just people who work on a production line. An efficient operation requires employees in numerous roles. Manufacturing career options include jobs in assembly, fabrication, production, engineering, maintenance, logistics, management, administration, metalworking, tool and die making, painting, operations, quality control, processing and more. Essential Skills and Personal Attributes Required for Jobs in the Hospitality & Service Industries

H

otels and motels are not only places where one can obtain great food and comfortable rooms; they are also the center of community life, with facilities for meeting, entertainment, communication and personal service. Their stock in trade has always been hospitality and service, and hotel and motel have made an art of dispensing comfort, pleasing the palate and creating an atmosphere of home for guests. As far as career opportunities are concerned, in United States alone, the hospitality industry is one of the largest of all industries, surpassed only by the automotive and food industry. Wage and salary opportunities in hotel and other accommodations is expected to increase by 17 percent through 2012, compared with 16 percent growth projected for all industries combined. Dr. Robert A. Beck, former dean of the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University, and an eminent consultant, describes the challenges and opportunities of the Hotel industry. “The hospitality industry offers today’s young men and young women a most interesting and exciting career. Management of a hotel or a restaurant calls for a wide range of capabilities. Guests must be received with cordiality and provided with comfortable, well-designed, and tastefully decorated surroundings. They need appetizing, wholesome food that has been wisely bought, properly stored, skillfully prepared, and graciously served. Various other conveniences in public areas, conference and exhibit rooms, communication systems, and travel systems are required for proper guest service. Further, a staff of employees must be recruited, trained, and motivated to provide hospitable service. Moreover, all must be successfully coordinated to return a profit to the establishment’s investors. For those wishing a rewarding and challenging life in service to their fellow man, a future in the hospitality field should certainly be considered.”

SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Social Skills

At the core of this profession is service and hospitality, so people need to enjoy working with people and helping to teach, inform and entertain them. Social skills

Graciousness is one of the key personal skills needed in the service industry. generally include talking to people and making them feel at ease with you. If the person does not possess excellent social skills, then it will be very difficult for him to survive in the service industry. A guest would never like to stay at a hotel where the staff is stiff and unfriendly no matter how beautiful and comfortable the hotel is.

Respectful, Patient and Tolerant

Graciousness is one of the key personal skills needed in the service industry. At times, the customer will truly test your patience but at times like that one must be polite with irritable, short-tempered customers. It is important to remember to never quarrel with the customer as he is the reason for your bread and butter. The most basic quality in a manager is for him to be respectful to others. Pride is the most precious thing to people and if the manager takes that away from his employees, they will never trust him again. That will make extracting work from them very difficult. A manager’s job is to make sure that the employees are learning, growing and performing to their utmost potential and that can only be achieved through a relationship of mutual trust and kindness.

delivered. Since the hotel industry is highly competitive and gourmet is an essential part of the hotel industry, it is essential that the food served is always fresh, cooked well and nicely presented. Along with that, it is important for the person managing the inventory to be a good negotiator so that he may get maximum utility out of the price paid for the supply.

The most important job of a leader is to assist the employees and his team into giving their best efforts towards the organizational goal. Leaders inspire others to act by setting a good example. They drive and perseverance spurs others on. A leader’s responsibilities are many. He must inspire others, be able to give positive and negative feedback, organize and entrust projects and Negotiator responsibilities, solve problems and make Negotiation is gaining the favor of people decisions and monitor the team’s progress from whom we want things such as money, and setting goals for himself and his team. justice, status and recognition. He should know sources and methods of the funding and management of the resources. Business skills also include human resource management and delegating work and resources.

Valuing Diversity

To work with an assortment of individual cultures at one place is tough. Especially in this day and age of competition, if a company recognizes and respects individuality, then it can maintain a strategic edge over others. These cultural differences, if managed positively can foster creativity, better decision making, higher performance and competitive advantage. In the hotel industry, one is constantly meeting people from different cultures, backgrounds and language. It is essential to not only understand but also respect people from diverse societies and locations. A person can understand more about culturally different people by travelling around the world and interacting with such people. Besides that, reading can also teach a person much about different customs and traditions. It is important that the guests feel right at home when they visit your hotel and the only way to do that is to make the environment as close to their own environment as possible.

engineering or manufacturing. Rodney Mott, plant manager at Nucor Corp.’s new Hickman, Arkansas, steel mill, needed technical skills to decide on the installation of a new $50 million caster, which turns liquid metal into bands of steel. The move nearly doubled the Hickman plants capacity, to 36000 tons a week. Technical skills are particularly important al lower organizational levels. It is very difficult for a manager to survive in the business world if he does not possess adequate technical skills. His initial escalation in the organization depends on his technical skills.
