I

don’t know if you’ve ever had the experience of selling a house, but I’m finding that my first time isn’t all that much fun. The inspection period is almost over, and I’m experiencing so many thoughts—everything from the “worst case” to the “best case” scenario of how the sale might play out. The best case scenario is the buyers come into a large sum of money left to them by old aunt Hilda, decide to pay cash for the house without any concessions, and poof! House sold! The worst case scenario is they’ve reconsidered living in the neighborhood where my home is and have made a plan to move to Anchorage, Alaska instead...the whole deal falls through, and I have to put it on the market all over again. Of course, concerning myself and losing sleep will not affect the result in the end. But while enduring the uncertainty, it is human nature to ask, “What’s the worst that can happen?” In computer science there are algorithms and data structures that use complex mathematical equations to determine best and worst case scenarios for a particular task. The funny thing is that often, both the best-case performance and the worst-case performace rarely ever happens! Ultimately, the outcome will fall somewhere in the middle. I guess my point today is, that it’s natural to consider the extremes of how a situation might play out, but it is most likely a waste of time to dwell on them.

uring National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. Hispanic Heritage Month, whose roots go back to 1968, begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.” Today, 55 million people or 17% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. This represents a significant increase from 2000, which registered the Hispanic population at 35.3 million or 13% of the total U.S. population. HISTORY

Many Hispanic Americans trace their roots to the cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Americas -- including the Arawaks (Puerto Rico), the Aztecs (Mexico), the Incas (South America), the Maya (Central America), and the Tainos (in Cuba, Puerto Rico and other places). Some trace their roots to the Spanish explorers -- who in the 1400s set out to find an easier and less costly way to trade with the Indies. Other Latinos trace their roots to the Africans who were brought as slaves to the New World. For purposes of the U.S. Census, Hispanic Americans today are identified according to the parts of the world that they or their ancestors came from, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spain, or the nations of Central or South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. Leaders in Diversity and Inclusion

D

avid is in charge of workplace diversity management at a global manufacturing company. He was recently assigned a seemingly basic task. “Focus on minorities,” the executive sponsor of the initiative told him. “I’d like to see our numbers climb from 25 to 45 percent,” he said. Minorities are largely underrepresented at the company, but David knew that was only a small part of a larger problem. Women are also grossly underrepresented, especially among senior employees. Additionally, there are no current initiatives to hire people with disabilities, nor is there a policy in place that promotes diverse ways of thinking. Frustrated at the narrowed focus of his duty, David immediately felt discouraged. Through his experiences, he has learned that to achieve greater diversity and inclusion (D&I), organizational efforts will need to focus beyond just the numbers. To effect positive and measurable change within an organization, David knows it is imperative to focus efforts on a collective and multidimensional solution. Later that day, David chatted with a team of his coworkers in different countries during a conference call. Some of them echoed something he has heard plenty of times in the past.

Jason, a colleague in Singapore, stated, “Simply focusing on hiring minorities isn’t enough. The offices here, for example, employ a huge number of minorities, but they aren’t included as key decision makers, and they’re rarely promoted to executive positions.” David and Jason both agree that their company should continue to hire more people from underrepresented groups, but that a single focus will not do much to solve any of the larger problems. They understand that companies with gender, ethnic and racial diversity are at least 15

percent more likely to experience aboveaverage financial returns. They also know that companies within the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to do the same. These statistics imply a significant relationship between competitive profit gains and diversity, so why, exactly, is focusing on minorities not enough for a global company? Why are members of the global workforce — such as David and Jason — frustrated with one-way initiatives that do nothing more than single out certain groups of people? And most importantly: what can we learn from top companies successfully globalizing workplace diversity and inclusion? Managing diversity and inclusion in the global workplace is, in many ways, an unmapped territory. As such, we share four lessons from the following top global companies:

Lesson 1: Recognize the Shift in Global Understanding of D&I

As David and Jason realize in the above scenario, diversity today means more than race and gender. There’s growing significance placed on creating environments where a variety of different voices are encouraged and heard. These

voices come from people who may or may not be of the same gender, race, or ethnicity. Diversity in the workplace today can include some of the following: • Race • Ethnicity • Gender • Sexual orientation • Religious affiliation • Generation • Disability • Personality type • Thinking style This new way of thinking about D&I focuses on meeting the needs of the individual and not so much on an HR-centered initiative. Today, it is not only about having diversity within a company but leveraging that diversity to produce better products and services. It is crucial to hire and maintain a diverse workforce, so gender and racial/ethnic initiatives will be launched and maintained into the foreseeable future. There is much to learn from leaders in diversity and inclusion, but it is important to remember that every company’s D&I initiatives will look different. You should tailor your initiatives to address your specific industry and your company’s areas of weakness. Furthermore, global strategies should be able to be adopted locally. It’s clear that the shift in D&I still includes, cyc1_AFCS_Ads_EOE_Journal_v12.pdf but stretches beyond, race and gender. We are 1in need of a collective push toward recognizing the

need for diverse thinkers coming from a variety of different backgrounds, but companies are only slowly moving in this direction. Take the story of Todd Sears as an example. He began his career as a Wall Street investment banker in an environment that was not accepting of homosexuality. He eventually found a position in a more welcoming environment, where he flourished and eventually went on to pursue his own firm in a new market: private banking focusing on LGBT clients. There are aspects of running a global business that are the same across the board, such as making a profit and putting forth efforts into D&I. There are also unique concerns that come with operating through different cultures and regions.

Lesson 2: Build an Inclusive Environment

Studies show that diversity and inclusion efforts are worthwhile, especially on a global level. In the United Kingdom, senior executive teams proved a 3.5 percent increase in earnings before interest and taxes with every 10 percent increase in gender diversity. This implies that global business leaders should strive to create an atmosphere where multiple voices are heard, and their opinions are valued and considered. This fact should be engrained in the company culture. In the example scenario, David and Jason realized the importance of an inclusive global workplace, but were frustrated with the focus on a single group of workers – and frustrated that the com7/20/17 4:17lacked PM pany culture a focus on global talent. Few senior executives have realized the

importance of a diverse workforce powered with voices of people from different backgrounds, personalities and thinking styles across the global workplace. It has become important to create environments where all people are encouraged to draw upon their unique experiences, perspectives and backgrounds to advance business goals. To achieve this in a global work setting, it’s crucial to employ effective global communication and training efforts. Healthcare provider Johnson & Johnson, for example, realized that to be successful in global diversity, it needed culturally appropriate efforts launched for every region. The company was struggling to combine its diversity efforts in the United States and Europe, so it conducted its first-ever live video conference on mutual perceptions, diversity and respect. Clients and employees reported increased productivity, and over 100 survey participants reported the conference was the most valuable training they had ever experienced. Another example of a global company realizing the depth and scope of inclusive environments is Deutsche Bank, a signatory and founding member of diversity charters in Germany, Spain and Luxembourg. About 42 percent of its employees are female. Eileen Taylor of Deutsche explained, “We are in 75 countries and we hire the best talent in each locale. Diverse teams and companies make better decisions.” Considering these examples, it’s clear that some of the top organizations around the world have set an example for diverse and inclusive global work environments. ecurities, commodities, and financial services sales agents deal with a wide range of products and clients. Agents spend much of the day interacting with people, whether selling stock to an individual or discussing the status of a merger deal with a company executive. The work is usually stressful because agents deal with large amounts of money and have time constraints. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents typically do the following: • Contact prospective clients to present information and explain available services • Offer advice on the purchase or sale of particular securities • Buy and sell securities, such as stocks and bonds • Buy and sell commodities, such as corn, oil, and gold • Monitor financial markets and the performance of individual securities • Analyze company finances to provide recommendations for public offerings, mergers, and acquisitions • Evaluate cost and revenue of agreements A security or commodity can be traded in two ways: electronically or in an auction-style setting on the floor of an exchange market. Markets such as the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation system (NASDAQ) use vast computer networks rather than human traders to match buyers and sellers. Others, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), rely on floor brokers to complete transactions. The following are examples of types of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents: Brokers sell securities and commodities directly to individual clients. They advise people on appropriate investments based on the client’s needs and financial ability. The people they advise may have very different levels of expertise in financial matters. Finding clients is a large part of a broker’s job. They must create their own client base

by calling from a list of potential clients. Some agents network by joining social groups, and others may rely on referrals from satisfied clients. Investment bankers connect businesses that need money to finance their operations or expansion plans with investors who are interested in providing that funding. This process is called underwriting, and it is the main function of investment banks. The banks first sell their advisory services to help companies issue new stocks or bonds, and then the banks sell the issued securities to investors. Some of the most important services that investment bankers provide are initial public offerings (IPOs), and mergers and acquisitions. An IPO is the process by which a company becomes open for public investment by issuing its first stock. Investment bankers must estimate how much the company is worth and ensure that it meets the legal requirements to become publicly traded. Investment bankers also connect companies in mergers (when two companies join together) and acquisitions (when one company buys another). Investment bankers provide advice throughout the process to ensure that the transaction goes smoothly. Investment banking sales agents and traders carry out buy-and-sell orders for stocks, bonds, and commodities from clients and make trades on behalf of the firm itself. Investment banks primarily employ these workers, although some work for commercial banks, hedge funds, and private equity groups. Because markets fluctuate so much, trading is a split-second decisionmaking process. Slight changes in the price of a trade can greatly affect its profitability, making the trader’s decision extremely important. Floor brokers work directly on the floor—a large room where trading is done—of a securities or commodities exchange. After a trader places an order for a security, floor brokers negotiate the price, make the sale, and forward the purchase price to the trader. Financial services sales agents consult on a wide variety of banking, securities, insurance, and related services to individuals and businesses, often catering the services to meet the client’s financial needs. They contact potential clients to explain their services, which may include the handling of checking accounts, loans, certificates of deposit, individual retirement accounts, credit cards, and estate and retirement planning.

Work Environment

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents held about 341,500 jobs in 2014. The largest employers of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents were as follows: • Securities and commodity contracts intermediation and brokerage 35% • Depository credit intermediation 32% • Other financial investment activities 11% • Nondepository credit intermediation 5% • Management of companies and enterprises 4% Most securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents work many hours under stressful conditions. The pace of work is fast, and managers are usually demanding of their workers, because both commissions and advancements are tied to sales. Investment bankers travel extensively because they frequently work with companies in other countries. Because computers can conduct trades faster than people can, electronic trading is quickly replacing verbal auction-style trades on exchange floors. The environment of the stock exchange is changing as a result, with more traders carrying out orders behind a desk and fewer working on the exchange floor. A growing number of securities sales agents, employed mostly by discount or online brokerage firms, work in call-center environments. In these centers, hundreds of agents spend much of the day on the telephone taking orders from clients or offering help and information on their accounts. Because most of the major investment banks are in New York City, employment of securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents is concentrated in that metropolitan area.

In addition, they may work evenings and weekends because many of their clients work during the day. Call centers often operate 24 hours a day, requiring agents to work in shifts.

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents generally must have a bachelor’s degree to get an entry-level job. Studies in business, finance, accounting, or economics are important, especially for larger firms. Many firms hire summer interns before their last year of college, and those who are most successful are offered full-time jobs after they graduate. Numerous agents eventually get a master’s degree in business administration (MBA), which is often a requirement for high-level positions in the securities industry. Because the MBA exposes students to real-world business practices, it can be a major asset for jobseekers. Employers often reward MBA holders with higher level positions, better compensation, and large signing bonuses.

Training

Most employers provide intensive on-the-job training, teaching employees the specifics of the job, such as the products and services offered. Trainees in large firms may receive technical instruction in securities analysis and selling strategies. Firms often rotate their trainees among various departments to give them a broad understanding of the securities business. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents must keep up with new products and services and other developments. They attend conferences and training seminars regularly.

Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

Brokers and investment bankers must register as representatives of their firm with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). To obtain the license, potential agents must pass a series of exams. Many other licenses are available, each of which gives the holder the right to sell different investment products and services. Traders and some other sales representatives also need licenses, although these vary by firm and specialization. Financial services sales agents may need to be licensed, especially if they sell securities or insurance. Most firms offer training to help their employees pass the licensing exams. Agents who are registered with FINRA must attend continuing education classes to keep their licenses. Courses consist of computer-based training on legal requirements or new financial products or services. Although not always required, certification enhances professional standing and is recommended by employers. Brokers, investment bankers, and financial services sales agents can earn the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification, sponsored by the CFA Institute. To qualify for this certification, applicants need a bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related work experience and must pass three exams, which require several hundred hours of independent study. Applicants also must have an international passport. Exams cover subjects in accounting, economics, securities analysis, financial markets and instruments, corporate finance, asset valuation, and portfolio management. Applicants can take the exams while they are getting the required work experience.

Advancement

Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents usually advance to senior positions in a firm by accumulating a greater number of accounts. Although beginners often service the accounts of individual investors, they may eventually service large institutional accounts, such as those of banks and retirement funds. After taking a series of tests, some brokers become portfolio managers and have greater authority to make investment decisions regarding an account. Some experienced sales agents become branch office managers and supervise other sales agents while continuing to provide services for their own clients. A few agents advance to top management positions or become partners in their firms. Many investment banks use an “up or out” policy, in which entry-level investment bankers are either promoted or terminated after 2 or 3 years. Investment banks use this policy to ensure that entry-level positions are not occupied long term, allowing the bank to bring in new workers.

This includes computer programming skills which they use to analyze financial products. Customer-service skills. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents must be persuasive and make clients feel comfortable with the agent’s recommendations. Decisionmaking skills. Investment banking traders must make split-second decisions, with large sums of money at stake. Detail oriented. Investment bankers must pay close attention to the details of initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions because small changes can have large consequences. Initiative. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents must create their own client base by making “cold” sales calls to people to whom they have not been referred and to people not expecting the call. Math skills. Securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents need to be familiar with mathematical tools, including investment formulas.

Pay

The median annual wage for securities, commodities, and financial services sales agents was $67,310 in May 2016. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The Future of Sustainable Energy: LENR

M

eeting the world’s ever-increasing energy demands depends on the invention of a self-sustainable energy source. From the future of space exploration to solving the world’s climate and energy problems, a device utilizing Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR), sometimes referred to as cold fusion, will allow people to generate their own power at the cost of next to nothing. LENR could change the world overnight. LENR is a type of nuclear reaction that differs dramatically from any kind of existing reaction, occurring near room temperature and operating self-sustainably for extended periods of time. These reactions are much safer, cleaner, simpler, and cheaper than nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, or any other known energy source can provide, including gasoline. Because LENR occurs through the merging of hydrogen and nickel to form energy, according to NASA researchers, one percent of the total planetary nickel mined could produce energy for the whole world, costing 25 percent the cost of coal. Additionally, carbon can be used as fuel, which would be turned into nitrogen. By avoiding the sequestration of carbon, LENR would remove it from the system. This means, essentially, that such technology used on a widespread basis would tremendously help the environment by nearly eliminating greenhouse gas problems and heavy air pollution, in turn outputting a fraction of the waste compared to what current energy sources produce. Cold fusion has long been called a pipe

dream, with plenty of skeptics dismissing the idea on the first mention. Although many scientists claimed to have achieved LENR over the years, under additional scrutiny, most failed to reproduce experiments. Pseudo-science may have been an appropriate term for the technology, that is prior to the past few years. Scientists from the NASA Langley Research Center, and around the world for that matter, now tout that over 20 labs have independently verified LENR devices producing excess energy, removing all doubt about LENR being a real science. Mainstream science, while hesitant to accept the reality of the new science, doesn’t have much of a choice any longer – LENR is officially the future of sustainable energy science. Scientists from over 30 countries met in July, at the University of Missouri, to share information regarding the new technology and how it can be improved and implemented on a wide scale. Once widespread implementation of LENR occurs, nearly everyone will have a LENR device that replaces their water heater, enabling people to produce their own power, heat and electricity, in a selfsustainable manner. Power companies and power grids will become all but obsolete, the world’s reliance on fossil fuels will dissolve and humanity could finally achieve total self-reliant status with minimal government interference. ne of the first tasks before anyone can begin to effectively manage their career is to be able to put themselves in a positive emotional state. Your emotional state can determine your ability to successfully react to the various factors on the job. Some of the information in this article comes from the fields of sports psychology and personal development. Being in control of your emotional state is not an exact science, but there are techniques that can make a difference. Below are several techniques that I have used while on the job.

Beliefs and References

A belief is any feeling of certainty about something. For example, students who learn one subject successfully, often develop a belief in their ability to quickly and easily learn other subjects. References are how you interpret a situation based on your total experiences in that area.• Building a set of positive references can assist your ability to recover from a negative emotional state and give you the confidence to learn new and challenging material.

Focus

Anyone can quickly change their mental state by changing their focus. • Don’t allow yourself to be frustrated if “your way” does not seem to work. Try other methods and break down any task into man-

ageable steps. For example, if you are having problems getting your computer to work properly, try a different approach.

Empowering questions provide you with new understanding, help you to focus on solutions instead of problems, move you to take action, and make you responsible for your own learning progress. Examples of empowering questions: • How could I use this less than perfect experience? (Instead of: Why am I such an idiot?); • What would I like to learn in this situation? (Instead of: Why doesn’t this software ever work?) • Possibility questions, such as: “what if everyone in the world had access to the Internet?” helps to provide a big picture.

Veterans have been trained to communicate respectfully, honestly, and also openly when they know something is wrong. In the military, if they let things go unattended or undone, they were disciplined. Even when an error occurred that was not their fault, they were trained to do everything in their power to correct it, or bring it to their superior’s attention for them to take care of. In any healthcare facility, noticing errors and correcting them is essential, not only for the welfare of the patient, but to avoid legal issues as well. Intuition. Some people are born with more intuition than others, but just like leadership skills, intuition is a skill that needs to be taught or channeled correctly. Veterans working in the medical field during battle have had that skill honed to perfection in many cases. Having a “sixth sense”

The medical training and education military personnel get while in service is outstanding, thorough, state-of-the-art, and easily transferable into civilian life. If you are a healthcare facility dealing with special fields of medicine and would like to hire a veteran, the VA will oftentimes pay for a veteran to get the special training they need. Tax Credits. There are numerous tax credits available to employers who hire veterans. WOTC (Work Opportunity Tax

Credit) has information about tax credits for employers on the IRS website. There are certain qualifications and forms to fill out, but the effort is well worth it. There is also the Official Wounded Warrior Program available in all five branches of the armed services: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guards. When considering hiring a veteran, do not overlook the wounded vets. Veterans who have been wounded may have various obstacles to overcome, but they are determined to be the best employee possible. The healthcare field needs dedicated, skilled employees. If you are an owner of a healthcare facility, hiring a veteran will be beneficial for both you and the vet. ooking into nursing as a career choice? Or maybe you already are a nurse and are looking for a new niche in nursing? Many nurses start off in a hospital to get one to two years of mixed medical-surgical nursing experiences under their belt. This kind of experience cannot be underrated. It allows a nurse to experience various types of patients and conditions so that they can see if there is an area of interest to specialize in. Read further to explore five areas of nursing that look at specialty opportunities.

1. Mental health nursing

Ranging from working with individuals in an acute care hospital inpatient setting to a community-based program, mental health nursing offers exciting opportunities for passionate and empathetic nurses. Supporting patients with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders, to name a few, this field employs nurses who are committed to advocating for those with mental health conditions. The specialty requires either extra training

on the job or some employers may require a specialty certificate in mental health. In larger, urban centers the option to work in pediatric mental health with kids may also be an option.

2. Obstetrical nursing

An obstetrical (OB) nurse needs to enjoy supporting families through the birthing process while also being on guard to be an emergency nurse if clinical issues arise and to be a surgical nurse to work with C-section deliveries. A specialty program in perinatal nursing is typically required to prepare nurses on how to manage emergencies prenatally, during labor and during

edical coders provide an important function in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and clinics, helping to maintain patient record-keeping and ensuring that providers are properly paid by insurance companies. The following attributes are essential to quality medical coding.

Academic Understanding Combined with Good Logic Skills

Medical coding is a highly specialized skill that takes time to master. Those who work in this field must have a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. They must also be able to analyze information logically to arrive at the correct diagnosis and procedure codes. The work is especially challenging when patients have symptoms that are equivocal in nature, diagnoses are undetermined, or where a physician orders a range of treatment protocols.

Coding to the Highest Level with Specificity

An experienced medical coder knows the importance of coding to the highest level of specificity within the ICD-9-CM (The International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification). Vague coding often leads to insurance companies rejecting claims. These claims must then be resubmitted while providers wait for payment, impacting their bottom line. Therefore, to ensure claims are paid expeditiously, coders must have more than a general knowledge of relevant codes in a given area, and be able to pinpoint correct subsections of the ICD-9-CM.

The codes that are currently in use are not static, but are continually being modified through new legislation and industry mandates. Quality medical coders are always learning long after they have completed their initial training. The American Health Information Management Association requires members keep up to date with continuing education in order to remain certified. This will become even more important after October 1, 2015, when the current ICD-9-CM system is updated to ICD-10. This new system will encompass more than 68,000 diagnosis codes--more than five times the current number of codes in use.

Ability to Decipher Information Without Direct Access to the Provider

Skilled coders move quickly and efficiently through medical reports. They are able to rely solely on the physician’s or nurse’s record to determine the appropriate codes, without having to speak to the provider. Assuming the notes in the file are accurate and legible, a good coder has enough knowledge to determine the correct codes without having to stall the process to get more information.

Technologically Savvy

New software programs are continually being developed to make the work of medical coders more efficient and more accurate. Those who adapt easily to improved technology are a big asset to providers who rely on their skills for accurate coding. A healthcare publication discussed the trends for the future ten years in the healthcare industry. This publication showed that patient care had decreased recently in the Academic Health Centers. This encouraged the health centers to try to be more efficient and productive with their research and patient care. In addition, the article stated that some areas would have an increase in other trends. For instance, there would be an increase in costs for patients, an increase need for technology and an increase need for patient care. here are certain qualities that an education professional needs to have in order to be successful. A good educator needs to be committed to helping his or her students succeed. The same is true for counselors and members of the administration. It works better when the professional has a desire to help other people. Those who choose to work in education should also love the idea of teaching.

A critical quality that education professionals need to have at every level is patience. Working with students and parents can be frustrating. This can be particularly true when teachers are dealing with children who have behavioral problems or when talking to “helicopter parents.” Teachers need to be patient with their students and parents in order to achieve the best results. Each student needs to be taught at his or her individual level. This requires teachers to assess their students, work with parents, and make adjustments in the classroom that allow each student to realize his or her full potential. Those in administration must be patient with teachers, parents, and members of the school board. The inevitable personality clashes and disputes over education require administrators to execute their tasks diplomatically. Effective communication skills will help administrators and other education professionals explain information thoroughly and prevent conflicts due to miscommunication. Good communication skills are key. Teachers need to be able communicate different concepts to their students. Well-educated professionals who do not communicate well cannot share knowledge, so it is important that those with education careers adjust their communication styles and tone for each student so that the information is understood. It is also important to monitor nonverbal methods of communication. Some children who are diagnosed with behavioral or cognitive disabilities have problems understanding nonverbal cues, and anyone who works with these students should find alternative ways to communicate. Education careers require people to think and act creatively. Students have distractions in their lives, and teachers need to find fresh and exciting ways to present information. Some people are naturally creative while others need to work at it. Fortunately, there are online and community resources available that allow teachers to share their creative ideas with each other. Being creative is not the same as being spontaneous. Implementing creative teaching methods in the classroom demands extensive preparation. Simply changing the way that an education professional delivers a concept does not guarantee success. Creativity should be included in the standard methodologies that address important learning objectives. Anyone who works in the education field needs to radiate self-confidence. The personal insecurity of education professionals will reduce the ability of students to accept their teachers as authorities in the classroom. Timid teachers are more likely to have trouble handling behavioral problems in class and stay on schedule. Educators need to be confident in their abilities as well as the abilities of their students. Students, even young children, are able to pick up on the confidence (or lack of ) of their instructors. If a teacher does not believe that he or she is capable of helping students succeed, there is no reason for the students to trust the teacher. Similarly, students are not motivated to take direction from educational professionals who do not believe in them. Before considering an educational career, candidates should consider whether or not they have the qualities necessary to work in the education profession. Certain skills can be improved. For example, people can enhance their communication skills and learn creative techniques from colleagues. It is also possible to work on personal characteristics and skills such as patience and confidence. The personal desire to teach others, however, is innate and cannot be taught.

A variety of education careers are available to anyone interested. Teachers can work with preschool- and kindergarten-age children or choose to work in elementary education. Middle school and high school students usually have teachers who concentrate on specific subjects. Community colleges, traditional universities, and graduate programs need instructors; however, teaching at the college level usually requires the completion of graduate school and a PhD. At every level, educational institutions and programs need effective administrators. Working with young children can be rewarding. Preschool teachers are responsible for the physical, social, and intellectual development of the children in their care. Children at this age learn from play and other activities. Elementary school teachers also need to manage behavior and maintain state standards of education. Teaching elementary school typically requires a bachelor’s degree and state certification. Teachers at secondary schools specialize in a given subject, such as English, math, or history, and some focus on skills like woodworking. Secondary schools are split in two ways: middle schools can include fifth through ninth grade; junior high covers seventh through ninth grade. High school is considered tenth through twelfth grade.

While there are many good reasons for people to join the education profession, there are also several disadvantages to education careers ” just ask anyone in the profession. For example, teachers often feel unappreciated for the work they do. A career in education requires a great deal of personal sacrifice. Teachers put in long hours outside the classroom; they often find themselves teaching overcrowded classes, and some use their own money to pay for a portion of their supplies. As teachers are responsible for handling student issues, they often shoulder the blame for student failure. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge to the next generation. Teachers have expectations placed on them by federal and state standards, administrators, and parents. They are required to adjust each class in order to meet the needs of individual students; and all of them work at different skill levels and hail from different backgrounds. Trying to juggle the expectations placed on them and still teach effectively can be stressful. espite the difficulty law enforcement agencies across the country are having in recruiting and keeping good officers, there are still plenty of people out there who see the benefits of becoming a police officer and who have a strong desire to work in law enforcement. Unfortunately, not all of those people are in a position to be hired - yet. If you are one of those folks willing to do the job, pay attention, because I’m going to lay out for you exactly what you need to get yourself prepared for a law enforcement career.

Be Ready to Pass a Law Enforcement Background Check

Before you even consider applying for a job as a police officer, you should evaluate your past behaviors and associations to make sure they’re aren’t any skeletons in your closet that could keep you from ever getting hired. Background checks for police officers are thorough and grueling, and they’ll include looking at your past work history, any past detected or undetected criminal history, psychological evaluations, and even a polygraph exam. Needless to say, you need to have a pretty clean background if you want to have any hopes of getting hired, even if you meet the other minimum requirements to be a police officer.

You Need to Be Physically Able to Work as a Police Officer

Okay, so we’ve all seen pictures of overweight police officers. But regardless of whether a police department enforces fitness standards after you get hired, you can bet they’ll have weight and fitness standards during the hiring process. Usually, police departments use one of two types of tests: a physical abilities test or a physical fitness assessment. The best way to prepare for both is to do exercises that build up both your physical strength and your cardiovascular abilities. Regardless, consult with your doctor before you begin any fitness regimen, and start working toward getting in shape well before you apply for the job so you’ll be ready whenever it comes time for the physical assessment.

Sixty-five percent of 321 executives of large global companies surveyed by Forbes Insights claimed to have a plan in place to recruit a diverse workforce — but only 44 percent employ retention programs. This signifies a gap in collective progress when it comes to retaining diversity and inclusion in the workplace. In other words, you cannot simply have diversity; you must learn to leverage and nurture it so that it can thrive.

Lesson 3: Use Multiple Practices and Measures

Diversity and inclusion should not be treated as a ‘oneoff’ initiative. Many leaders struggle with how to manage workplace diversity. Promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace is a constant work in progress, and it should be maintained and nurtured to be effective. According to a 2014 HUDSON Research & Consulting study that interviewed six D&I leaders from leading non-U.S.-based companies, there is a need for multiple initiatives and many sources of feedback. Instead of looking at turnover rates and other numbers, there is a need for measuring ROI based on different indicators and granular information, such as employee responses and consistent feedback about policies. Chemistry giant BASF employs a talent dashboard that allows leaders to gauge D&I progress by asking comprehensive questions about their thoughts on the hiring process and retention trends. This ensures that multiple voices are heard and encourages employees to voice their opinions. Strategies like this give a voice to employees who might not otherwise express their opinions. Another example of a successful global company utilizing multiple practices and measures is the German chemical and pharmaceutical company Bayer. It uses eLearning modules as a way of providing ongoing education to employees. This type of resource provides employees with consistent reminders of the company’s values and expectations. David and Jason at the global manufacturing company would likely appreciate such efforts. A talent dashboard would allow them to voice their concerns in a safe atmosphere, as well as show them that leadership cares about their concerns. The eLearning modules would serve as a way to educate employees across the globe, placing emphasis on things that matter beyond racial and gender diversity. The takeaway is that your global company should have solutions in place to monitor and retain a talented and diverse workforce, such as any of the following: Global mentoring programs Employee resource groups Multicultural talent management Strategic partnership development e-Learning modules

It is critical that senior leadership model diversity and inclusion. When senior leaders own D&I and make themselves a part of the diversity and inclusion management process, it sets the tone for the rest of the organization to follow suit. “I have to be the champion of diversity and inclusion,” said L’Oréal USA CEO Frédéric Rozé. “It is my job to be a role model and show how important this is to our company.” BASF is an excellent example of a global company that introduces D&I training programs to senior

If you’re interested in working outside, you may have more options than you realize: according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nearly half of all jobs required outdoor work in 2016. For purposes of this article, an outdoor career is one in which at least some workers spend a large part of their workday doing tasks outside. Pros and Cons of Outdoor Careers

As with nearly any career, working outside has its upsides and downsides. You need to decide whether the nonstandard schedules, harsh weather, and dangerous conditions prevalent in some of these jobs outweigh the fresh air, love of nature, and sense of pride they may also offer. Work schedules for outdoor jobs often differ from the standard 9-to-5, Monday-toFriday hours of many office jobs. For example, boat captains might be away from home for weeks at a time, working night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Outdoor jobs may be seasonal, and work isn’t always available year-round. Employment is more plentiful during warmer weather in some industry sectors. And there may be an increase in employment during the winter months in other industries, such as at skiing facilities, even if overall employment dips in that industry sector. Regardless of the season, people in these jobs must work outdoors frequently in all kinds of weather. In heat, cold, rain, or snow, workers still are expected to perform their tasks. And outdoor work often involves doing physically demanding tasks, such as lifting or digging. As a result, workers in some outdoor jobs incur occupational injuries or illnesses at a higher rate than the average worker. To help prevent accidents and injuries, workers must take precautions and follow safety guidelines. But the perks of working outside—including being in the open air, enjoying nature, and getting exercise—may outweigh whatever challenges these careers present. In some occupations, working outdoors gives people a chance to appreciate, promote, or protect nature. Whether they ferry commuters across a bay, care for park animals, or help to prevent forest fires, people may be drawn to these careers for the opportunity to interact with the environment positively through their work. Workers in other outdoor occupations like that their jobs involve hands-on activities that produce tangible results. For example, a civil engineer can take pride in the completion of a bridge that she helped to design, and construction laborers share the satisfaction of having built it.
