ost women can remember their high school years being full of good times with best friends, crushes on boys, and the occasional heartbreak when something didn't go exactly as planned. I know all of these memories resonate for me. I also remember being disrespectful to my mother and feeling life just wasn't fair. I'd pour my heart out in my "locked" diary, (that my older sister could break open in an instant, and routinely did) and felt no one in the world could possibly understand what I was going through. That is when my English teacher, Judy Uhlir, came to my rescue. She was a petite woman with strawberry-blonde hair and the sweetest smile. She recognized that I liked writing and encouraged me to continue and hone the craft. At the end of the year, she actually had a booklet of my poems and essays bound together as a gift for me. I know she did not do this for the other students in the class, and I felt special. I went on to get a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in publishing and writing, always understanding that without Ms. Uhlir's encouragement, I may never have continued with my education. She will always have a special place in my heart. We have corresponded over the years, and our appreciation for each other is mutual! During Teacher Appreciation Week this year, I'd like to encourage everyone to think back to a special teacher who went above and beyond. Reach out. Say thank you. I know they will love hearing from you!

Celebrating Armed Forces Day
In
1949, the Department of Defense was officially established, renaming the “National Military Establishment” that had two years prior combined the Army, Navy, and Air Force into a single department. All three branches began reporting to the new, single Secretary of Defense, withdrawing individual cabinet-level representation and unifying the structure of the Armed Forces. In an effort to symbolize and solidify this new union, President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish Armed Forces Day, a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service. The new holiday—established on August 31, 1949 by U.S. Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson—would also replace the separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. On the first Armed Forces Day in 1950, more than 10,000 troops and veterans marched in a parade in Washington, D.C. while more than 36,000 marched in New York City. In Berlin, at Templehof Airfield, 1,000 U.S. troops paraded for the German citizens. The theme for that year’s celebration was “Teamed for Defense” and B-36 bombers flew over the capital of every state, showcasing the power of the U.S. armed forces and increasing awareness of the military among the public. Similarly, in the harbors across the country, famous World War II vessels like the Missouri, the New Jersey, the North Carolina, and the Iowa, were all open for public inspection. Today Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May and since it is not a federal holiday, many bases and installations are open for celebrations and field trips. Many feature parades, ceremonies, and other activities in honor of the day, and festivities often start the week before, which is designated as Armed Forces Week.
9 Easy Ideas for Celebrating Armed Forces Day
• Research and attend a celebration in your community, nearest military installment, or military museum. • Visit your local cemetery and leave a small remembrance – like a small American flag or flowers – on the headstones of those who served. You could also take time to clean around these same headstones. • Make a donation to a service-related organization. • Volunteer at your nearest VA hospital; there are many volunteer jobs untrained civilians can do. They also often have lists of items they can accept for care-related goods like warm socks and blankets. • Teach your children/grandchildren/nieces and nephews about the holiday and help them celebrate (say the Pledge in your home and wear red, white, and blue). • Send a care package to a deployed serviceman or woman. • Thank a veteran, reservist, or active military member on your social media. Don’t forget the tag #armedforcesday. • Help the family of a deployed servicemember. Offer to help with a chore like mowing the yard or picking up the kids from school. Dropping off a hot meal or even a gift card for takeout is a nice gesture and can help lighten their load. • Wear an American flag pin or fly a flag at your home or business. Thank you to all active, reserve, and veteran members of our Armed Forces. We hope you feel the gratitude of the nation on Armed Forces Day! Information provided bywww.veteranaid.org

The Benefits of Hiring Veterans Exploring the expertise that military personnel can offer your business by Mike Starich
Almost every United States city is witnessing growth in construction—both in commercial and residential building, as well as roads, bridges and other structures. With the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting the industry to increase from its current 6.9 million jobs to 7.2 million jobs by 2024—meeting the demand for quality talent is paramount for construction companies.
C
ompanies looking to hire find that it goes beyond just filling the gap of supply and demand. The leadership, teams and specialized skills that an organization chooses to execute on projects will have a direct impact on its bottom line. To help ensure the right talent is in place, more construction companies find that adding veterans to their workforce is not just a good idea, but also good for business.
Benefits of Military Hiring
The military has thousands of enlisted individuals, officers and command staff that make for an ideal fit for the construction industry. In fact, many have experience on military construction teams helping to build or repair buildings, airfields, bridges and other structures. Veterans without direct military construction experience can also be exceptional candidates for construction positions in the civilian workforce. They already have the sought-after leadership qualities based on their ability to meet deadlines, supervise teams and work in extreme conditions.
Strong work ethic and dedication are just a few of the characteristics that veterans bring back to the civilian lifestyle. They are disciplined team players, organized and dependable, which are all talents that make it advantageous for construction companies to hire them for anything from leading and overseeing a project to being part of a team that helps design, build or repair construction jobs. The Armed Forces see more than 200,000 U.S. service members return to civilian life each year. As of April 2017, the veteran unemployment rate continues to remain below the national average at 3.7 percent. This is in part due to government programs and initiatives that have focused on hiring veterans over the years, including Hiring our Heroes and Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW). Many businesses in the private sector are also taking a leading role hiring veterans. Related Companies, a company headquartered in New York City with extensive industry experience in development and construction, has created a veteran hiring initiative that focuses on employing men and women coming out of the Armed Forces.

“The men and women who come out of serving our country have dedication, a strong work ethic and are exceptional problem solvers —which are great attributes to have when working on construction projects.” In discussing the benefits of hiring veterans, Related Companies Senior Vice President Frank J. Monterisi, Jr. said that veterans “are very valuable to our company and the overall construction industry. The men and women who come out of serving our country have dedication, a strong work ethic and are exceptional problem solvers —which are great attributes to have when working on construction projects.” As a former Marine, Monterisi helps spearhead the veteran hiring program for Related. He said, “Construction projects are all about teams and working together. Veterans have great teamwork and can manage through demanding environments with efficient real-time, problem -solving skills. We are happy to bring them on, and will continue to keep this hiring initiative as a key priority for our organization.” While there are other programs similar to what Related Companies has in place, not all businesses understand how to optimize their veteran hiring programs to effectively hire this skilled workforce.
Building a Veteran Hiring Program
From insights into the background and experience of military talent to the development of veteran outreach campaigns, there are options for construction companies interested in creating or improving their veteran hiring programs. There is no perfect approach to hiring veterans, and traditional recruiting methods often fall short in reaching the right military talent. Understanding the uniqueness of a veteran’s job search situation and having programs in place to support him/ her in the continuing transition into the civilian world go a long way in helping establish high-quality military candidate pipelines and filling positions faster. It is increasingly important for organizations to build a program, seek out advice and understand best practices within the industry. Key steps in helping build a program include: Develop a plan with goals—Understand the backgrounds of the veterans that best fit with your open

positions, how many candidates you are looking to hire and the ultimate, desired outcome. This can help define your program. Establish goals that align with your overall business strategy, and make sure you have buy-in from the top executives within the organization. Skills translation—Frontline hiring managers often lack an understanding of a veteran’s unique job search situation. To have a successful veteran hiring program, skills translation is critical. Unless veterans are applying for defense contracting and construction jobs, they must translate their military skills into civilian terms. Hiring managers do not always understand military terminology on resumes. If possible, assign someone from inside your company that has a military background as the leader or champion of the program to help hiring managers translate skill sets.

5 of The Fastest Growing Jobs in Clean Energy F
inding a new job can be tough. One way to maximize your odds is to look for opportunities in clean energy. It’s one of the fastest-growing, most innovative sectors of our economy. A recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report on jobs and the economy found that 6.4 million Americans work in the energy sector, with 300,000 jobs added last year. A huge percentage of these new jobs are in renewable energy and efficiency. Let’s take a look at just a few of the fastest growing jobs in the sector.
Best fit—The best fits come from the junior officer or more senior, noncommissioned officer ranks, who also have a sincere desire and interest in the construction fields. They may have picked up their interest while growing up or from their experiences in the military. When that interest is combined with real leadership experience in demanding environments, an employer can hire some truly outstanding talent. Onboard and transition appropriately—Military personnel are accustomed to having a highly structured environment with chain of command and expectations of structure and protocol. If you can, reach out to veteran candidates before they make the transition into your business and start cultivating a healthy change to this new environment. This includes talking through expectations and the organizational structure. This, in turn, will result in a positive effect, higher retention rates and happier employees. Culture component—The companies that have the best records for retaining veterans also share certain cultural similarities with the military. The most important of these are camaraderie and teamwork, characteristics ingrained in the military culture. Many veterans are more successful at organizations that can help encourage this type of culture. If you have veterans on your team already, consider building a mentorship program to help positively impact this culture and teamwork. Development—Continuing education and training is a benefit that most veterans desire. In fact, advanced training is a key component for the military. This makes continued educational and training programs a critical factor in civilian work—particularly with mid-level and upper-level candidates. Many veterans are looking for an opportunity that will allow them to continue with their education while working. The most successful programs often are tied to “Leadership Development Programs (LDPs). LDPs can be very effective for retention and satisfaction amongst veterans. Market your program correctly—Employment branding is not always an area of focus for construction businesses. However, when it comes to military veterans, there are numerous organizations competing for them, so it is important to position your construction company as an attractive employer of choice. Seek outside assistance with this if you need it, in order to effectively reach and connect with military personnel. While it is nice to hire veterans out of a sense of duty, the case is strong that the right veteran can have a powerful impact on your business. If you can build a solid program based on the previous points, you are well on your way to strengthening your company. Wind Turbine Technician
Adding 25,000 new jobs last year, the U.S. wind industry now boasts 102,000 workers. Wind turbine technician isn’t just one of the fastest growing jobs in clean energy – it’s the single fastest growing occupation in America. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the sector will grow 108% by 2024. To learn more about opportunities in wind, check out the DOE Wind Career Map.
Solar Installer
The solar industry added more than 73,000 jobs in 2016 – a 25% increase over 2015. In fact, it’s estimated that one out of every 50 new jobs created nationally came from solar. This growth has sparked an array of opportunities for many professionals – even in fields such as real estate and sales. The core of the industry and the technology’s growth continues to be solar installers,
who help set up and maintain the panels that are increasingly appearing on rooftops. To learn more about the requirements for installation professionals and other career pathways within the solar industry, visit the DOE Solar Career Map.
Clean Car Engineer
More alternative fuel vehicles are hitting the streets – and so are opportunities related to sustainable transportation. Today more than 259,000 Americans work with these vehicles, including cars and trucks running on electricity, hydrogen, and other alternative fuels, such as natural gas.

The growing demand for cars that both save money and create less pollution has driven a need for skilled engineers. DOE has set out to help strengthen the next generation of clean car engineers through a range of competitions like EcoCAR 3, which challenges teams of university students to apply their creativity and technical chops for designing energyefficient, high performance vehicles. To learn more about careers in energy efficient vehicles, visit DOE’s Education Homepage.
BUILD A BETTER PHILADELPHIA
Sustainable Builder
Nearly 1.4 million energy efficiency jobs are in the construction industry. Construction firms have also seen a marked increase in the percentage of their workforce that spends at least half their time on work related to improving energy efficiency, rising from approximately 65% in 2015 to 74% in 2016. Building more environmentally sustainable buildings and houses requires expertise across a range of professionals in design and construction – from architects and engineers to carpenters and heavy equipment operators. DOE hosts a variety of competitions to harness the creativity of industry leaders, such as Solar Decathlon, which challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses. The program provides unique training and hands-on experience to prepare the competing students to enter the clean energy workforce.

Online Education for Healthcare Professionals
In
by T.L. Bodine
the fast-changing world of medical professionals, ongoing development is necessary to remain competitive. In many cases, these programs are mandatory. Even in situations where continuing education is not strictly required, continuing your education can give you a professional edge and keep you on top of your career goals. Although continuing development courses are valuable for many reasons, they can also be difficult for busy professionals to pursue. Medical careers are already time-intensive, and attempting to balance work with life and education can be very stressful. Fortunately, there are solutions that can reduce the stress and time commitment associated with continued education. Online classes have swiftly gained in popularity over the past few years. As advancements in Internet technology improve, online courses have become more sophisticated. Today, online education is a viable option for many students. Although it may not be the best choice for everyone, it might be right for you. Only by carefully weighing the pros and cons can you decide whether online continuing education will suit your needs.
How Online Education Works
quality of work = quality of life Cape Fear Valley Health is more than just a place to work. For more than 850 physicians and 7,500 skilled professionals, it’s home. We’re a regional, integrated health system with eight hospitals reaching across Southeastern North Carolina, with one focus … our patients. Cape Fear Valley Health offers the same opportunities to grow your career as other academic medical centers, but without the big city traffic and high cost of living. And you’ll have plenty of down time for day trips to the beach, weekends in the mountains, great shopping and other leisure pursuits.
Make our hometown, your hometown too.
Online classes are structured in much the same way as their classroom counterparts. Each class will have a professor who develops the curriculum and oversees the work done in the class. This professor can be contacted with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the duration of the course. Specific coursework varies depending on the type of class being taken, but it will generally consist of quizzes and tests combined with written projects. The material you cover may be presented in a purely written format, or you may watch or listen to multimedia lectures about the topic. Some online courses also encourage interaction between students by offering discussion forums, messaging systems or chat rooms to facilitate class discussion. Some online courses do require an in-person component as well to achieve completion. For example, it’s possible to obtain a nursing degree online by completing practical rotations at a local hospital. Online colleges partner with the community to provide these opportunities even in areas where in-person programs are not available.
Is Online Education High Quality?
For years, online college was looked down upon by many people as an inferior education option. To some extent, this reputation was earned. Some online colleges have a reputation for charging a high amount for a degree or certification that is essentially useless. These schools would place little value in their students and offer poor curriculum, leaving the student poorer but with little else to show for it. Fortunately, those colleges are now the minority. Most online schools are held to very high academic standards, and many well-qualified professors have moved to online teaching for a variety of reasons. This means that it’s possible to take a class online of the same or even higher value as that offered in person. One study completed by the University of Australia suggests that online learning is actually more effective in many cases than traditional classroom education. The study advocates a blended approach whenever possible to maximize the benefits of each type of learning, but it does highlight many of the advantages of online classes: high information retention, ability to balance school with life, and easy access to learning tools over the Internet. As long as you take the time to identify a good program for your continuing education, you should be able to reap the benefits of a high-quality education without investing the time commitment required by traditional in-person classes.

Although online classes have many valuable benefits, there are also a few important drawbacks to consider. Here are some of the pros and cons of online education as opposed to the traditional classroom setting. Depending on your individual needs, you may be better suited to one form over the other.
Pros of Online Classes:
-- Coursework can be completed at any time of day to suit the student’s schedule. This makes it much more flexible than a traditional classroom setting, which would require a set time commitment each week. This is the primary reason why online classes are so popular among working professionals.
May 2018
equal opportunity employment journal
-- Classes are largely self-paced, which caters well to students who are self-motivated and driven. You don’t need to linger unnecessarily on material that you understand just because a classmate is struggling with it, and you can go over complex material several times to ensure understanding. -- Classes are taken from the comfort of your home, which allows you to study while attending to household and family duties. Additionally, you save time and money on gas by taking classes at home rather than commuting to an in-person college. -- Online education is often less expensive than in-person tuition, and you save additional money on transportation and food costs. -- Classes are structured around the students and their needs, and you will often have more freedom to interact with fellow students about your course material.
Cons of Online Classes:
-- There is less social interaction between students and the professor, and there may be fewer professional networking opportunities arising from the classes. -- There is less opportunity for personal one-on-one assistance from your professor. You can request clarification over email if something in class confuses you, but overall you will get less feedback than you would in person. -- Students with older model computers or poor Internet connections may have difficulty completing classes, and they may need to calculate the expense of a new computer into their total education costs. Online learning is better designed for students who learn well through memorization and quizzing than those who might require a more handson approach. This means that some students genuinely thrive in an online environment while others may struggle more. Your individual learning style will determine whether you’ll be well-suited to online classes. Ultimately, the decision about your education and future is in your hands. With so many options available today, opportunities exist that were not available just a few years ago. Learning as much as you can about these opportunities can lead you to discover the best fit for your needs as you strive to maintain excellence and expertise in your field.

asked my friend and associate Pat Maher, Director of Civic Engagement at SPR Consulting, what tips he’d give to leaders and employees of organizations committed to hiring people with disabilities, as well as people with disabilities who are seeking employment. Here are his tips: FOR LEADERS:
Make hiring, promotion, development, and retention decisions based on merit, as you do for other job candidates and employees. Hold all people to the same standards of excellence. If the person is hired, it’s because they have the capacity to do the job and excel. Remember that people with disabilities are not looking for an undue advantage. They are looking for an opportunity – just like candidates who do not have disabilities. Demonstrate that you are becoming/have become more acculturated, comfortable, and accommodating proactively. Lead conversations about accommodation, realizing that everyone needs accommodation of some sort, whether it’s temporary or permanent. Recognize and acknowledge that most accommodations are those of process. Those that are physical have a tendency to benefit everyone. People with disabilities want to be assimilated comfortably into working cultures. They want to be viewed as a valued member of the team, not just “unique.” Disability–particularly for those with overt disabilities–is still atypical in the workplace. It gets a lot of attention called to it, and it can be uncomfortable. The Horsham Clinic is a dedicated and long standing private behavioral health care facility for the treatment of behavioral health disorders. The Horsham Clinic is an Equal Opportunity Employer and as such, openly supports and fully commits to recruitment, selection, placement, promotion, and compensation of all individuals without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, age, veteran status, marital status, religion, or physical and/or mental disability.
We are looking for individuals with good leadership and communication skills, and enthusiastic professionals to grow along with us.

FOR PEOPLE WITH OVERT DISABILITIES:
People with disabilities want to be assimilated comfortably into working cultures. They want to be viewed as a valued member of the team, not just “unique.”
Have a discussion with your manager and/or a Human Resources manager. Sometimes you don’t know you need an accommodation until you’re in the job. But if you know you genuinely need an accommodation, bring it up. If you’re doing your job and recognize the disability has been aggravated or has changed and you require a new or different accommodation, speak up. Build a respectful, open, and honest relationship with your manager so you can have this kind of discussion without feeling vulnerable. If you do not have that kind of relationship and feel unsafe, let your HR professional know. The goal is to make sure you have the things you need to do the job with excellence.
FOR EVERYONE:
We are all invested in moving business cultures forward. Our goal is to create the most productive workforce we can. Accommodation is a facet of productivity. Many people need accommodations, from special technology or training, to working from a remote location. It’s a discussion about how we can work together, achieving excellence in support of the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals. Don’t shy away from conversations about ways of working with people who have disabilities. Educate yourself about the disability and about the person. Build relationships with co-workers that make it safe to ask for and share information.
During and after hiring, use language that relates to the proactive identification of accommodation. Ex: “If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please let us know.” Consider adding talking points about accommodation for everyone, not just people with disabilities. Ex: “How can we help you be most productive? What do we need to do to help ensure your success in achieving the requirements and goals of this position?” TAKEAWAY Write/rewrite mission statements so they overtly reference disabilities/ Disability is a dimension of diversity. Leverage what you’ve learned abilities. When companies present themselves as supportive of the disabout working with people of different genders, races, religions, sexual ability population, it benefits the new person with a disability and the orientations, generations, etc. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, even existing colleagues. though the rims may be different.
FOR CURRENT EMPLOYEES:
Be sincere in interactions and communication. Exhibit respect as you would for any colleague. Get to know all of your colleagues, even those with disabilities. If you have a new colleague with a disability and you’re curious about them or the disability, engage in respectful conversation.

CONSIDERING A CAREER IN TECHNOLOGY? Here’s What Women Tech Leaders Have to Say

hen I asked women tech leaders to share their insight on being a women in technology for an article, I didn’t expect the hundreds of responses to flood my inbox. Since being a woman in tech leadership is still vastly underrepresented, I wanted their voices to be heard to encourage and excite the next generation of women to consider a career in tech. A big thank you to all the tech leaders that shared their insight. If you’re a tech leader and/ or HR/Hiring experts and are willing to share your comments for future articles, please email ElizabethB@protechfl.com.

“As a technology pioneer, as well as music industry insider, the best advice I can give to any aspiring female who dares to chart her own course is this: If you’re going to get in the game, then play the game with all your heart, and learn to win fairly and squarely. Low self-esteem will destroy you. So will secrets. In the end, whatever you choose to do, own it. Don’t apologize for being brave and courageous. And admit when you’ve made a mistake. Learn from it and move on. Don’t be a spark. Be the flame that burns through inequalities and leave an indelible trail of dust that boldly leads other women in the direction of their dreams,” said Elizabeth Vargas, Founder and CEO of Edge Music Network.

“Go for it! You are just as qualified as anyone! Have the confidence that you can make an impact. Sit at table and be an active participant in everything you can. Don’t sit on the sideline,” said Shelly Mudd, CRO of Jobs2Careers.com.
“Tech is such a fast-changing space, that it’s important to keep an open mind. It is easy to develop a simplified view of tech careers when much of what you see in the headlines is about the latest unicorn” or billion-dollar start-up powered by a mobile app. Yet, there are so many other possibilities. Some career paths like product management are not supported by a formal area of study at most colleges and universities, so it takes some extra courage to just try it out. In my case, I tripped and fell into the product management field before I even knew what it was called. Product managers need to collaborate extremely well with others and provide effective matrix-style leadership—influencing and persuading others even if you’re not the boss” and your title is special projects Sometimes women in tech may not perceive themselves -or be perceived by others – as having confidence, especially true when you are a product manager in a matrix organization with mostly male colleagues. I remember a time earlier in my career when I left a boardroom meeting with the executive leadership team and the senior vice president over my business pulled me aside to ask me why I was so quiet when he knew I had a lot of ideas. The point was Why be present in an executive discussion if you’re not going have a presence?” I still reflect on the nudging he gave me whenever I walk into a meeting, knowing I’m likely to be the only women or one of very few in the room. It takes building a high level of self-awareness to always bring your unique strengths and confidence in your ideas to the table,” said Jeanine Banks, EVP of GlobalProducts and Solutions of Axway.

“1) Mentor – Women should get involved with programs like Girls Who Code and Ladies Learning Code as these are raising awareness and opening opportunities for women in tech. 2) Speak Up – A woman should communicate and recognize their achievements to their managers, taking charge of her career path. In that same vein, a woman shouldn’t hesitate to ask questions and examine problems and concepts from a different perspective. Communicating with your team is key to succeeding in the tech space. 3) Be Proactive – If you are unhappy where you are at, don’t be afraid to make a move that will advance your career. Go after what you deserve and don’t wait for someone to give it to you,” said Deborah Kilpatrick, Co-founder and VP of Marketing of SourceKnowledge.
“Although it seems as if technology is a male-dominated space, technology is only a tool to solve real world problems. The one biggest advantage of recent advances in technology is that it allows us to create solutions to problems at scale. My advice to young women would be to try to identify important problems that need solutions, and if technology is one tool to solve that problem, pursue it,”

“Be especially mindful of what I call ‘shiny ball syndrome.’ Because the tech space operates on the edge; we don’t just participate in a market but we define markets, you’ll often know about and have access to the latest things. Whether that’s as straight-forward as the latest social channel or a more complex programmatic tool, in many ways those options are no different than the classic out-of-home billboard—they’re just tools in your toolbox, available to pull out if they support your strategy. Don’t get distracted by the latest thing: consider it, but use it because it has a place in your marketing plan and not (just) because it’s exciting,” said Alina Morkin, Director of Marketing of Voices.com.

“Be yourself but try some experiments with your looks and behavior to gauge people’s reactions. In my experiments, I noticed that the less makeup I had on and the more I stood my ground, the more respect I felt like I was receiving. Whether my perception was real or not, making these personal tweaks gave me more confidence around the many dominant personalities at Microsoft,” said Jessica Jobes, Founder of OnTheGrid.
“Consider the full range of open tech positions available for to you — data science, UX design, product management etc. and see which of your strengths best complement the job requirements. It’s important to assess the company’s environment and practices to make sure that it’s representative of a collective and not a singular culture. Also, make sure that you find a mentor early on in your career who can teach you valuable technical skills, be a strong support system and sharpen your career trajectory,” said Elizabeth Scherle, Co-Founder and President of Influenster.

“Do it! Even if you’re somewhere else doing something else, you need to learn what it means! The word technology” can sometimes feel opaque and daunting. It can also feel like it has nothing to do with what you may have studied or dreamt of doing. But here’s the thing- technology is everything. It is the all-encompassing material to manifest what ever it is that you may have wanted to do. If you aren’t sure what you wanted to do or be, even better— understanding the way technology is designed and built will provide the tools to start something when you’ve decided what you want to do. It’s important to understand how software and hardware systems are made, otherwise, it will get harder and harder to find your place in the economy of the future,” said Charlotte Lee, CEO of Kastling.

“Do it! One of the biggest hurdles I hear from women looking to get into the field are often just myths. For example, I don’t know how to code, or I’m not a technical person. The truth is, the tech sphere is a very creative industry, and learning foundational skills like coding and design is extremely approachable; you don’t need to be a Zuckerberg in order to enter this industry. Plus tech is notoriously short on great talent, and many are looking to diversify their workplace, giving women a huge advantage to compete,” said Mandy Wise, Head of Curriculum and Lead Instructor of Red Academy.

“Do it. I think you should do what you love no matter what obstacles seem to be in your way. I have never let the fact I am a woman stop me from doing what I want to do. If we let society tell us the direction we need to go in, we have nobody to blame for where we end up then ourselves. The technology era and workplace we are living in now is probably the fastest growing and fastest evolving in human history. Programs encouraging women to enter IT help, but it is our responsibility to jump in, learn the language and keep floating ideas Continued on page 25

Examples of these jobs include: • nursing assistant • mental health aide • dental assistant • physical therapist aide • occupational therapy aide Other positions require two years of education, such as: • physical therapist assistant • occupational therapy assistant • radiologic technologist (commonly called X-ray technician) You also can become a licensed practical nurse, known as licensed vocational nurses in some states, with one year of training. Becoming a registered nurse requires a minimum of an associate’s degree. Some occupational titles, such as medical assistant, have varying levels of responsibility depending on the job. You can qualify for some of these positions through a certificate program that you complete in one semester, while others require a one-year diploma or two-year degree. A medical assistant who works primarily as an office assistant requires less training than one who has clinical duties or is a billing specialist.

How to Land Your First Job as a New Registered Nurse
Y
ou just graduated, or you are about to graduate, and while you are worried about the upcoming NCLEX examination, you are also fairly confident that school has prepared you to pass this exam with ease. What has not been as easy is finding a job as a new graduate. Although your local hospital has quite a few listings, only a few of them say “New Graduates Accepted.” Many are speciality nursing positions that require certain experience, and though you have a lot of knowledge, the only experience you have is from clinical hours, and so does everyone else you are graduating with and therefore competing with for the jobs out there. How do you find that first job as a new RN? The single most important thing you can do is network. About 75% of people found their current positions through people that they know. Think about everyone that you currently know, and that means EVERYONE. A great place to start is a social media site. If you do not have an account on a social media site, start an account now, and start friending or following people that you know. Look at this list of acquaintances and friends, and think to yourself “Could they even remotely be of assistance in my job search?” If the answer is yes, call them if you have their number, or contact via electronic means if you do not. This is not the time to be shy. Start with anybody you know that works in the medical field, and then focus on people that know a lot of people, such as individuals in sales or real estate. Explain to them that you are actively looking for a RN position as a new graduate. Most people like to help others, and networking is the most effective way to get interviews. Working on your resume and continuing to apply for jobs listed on websites and in newspapers is of course also important. Having a professional edit your resume for you is not a bad idea, and this has often been the difference between one person getting an interview over another who does not have a professional resume. Use a professional resume editing service for great results. Cold-calling companies you might want to work for, as well as dropping off resumes, is another good tactic. Some of the greatest RN jobs are not in the hospital, but in home health, rehab centers, and doctor’s offices. Many times these facilities will not post job vacancies, but instead keep a file of resumes for when they need a position filled. Some of these positions will pay significantly more than a hospital, with better benefits and hours. With persistence and patience, you will land that first job as an RN. Nurses are still in high demand, and needed in all different types of healthcare settings. At the interview, be your best self and remember that a big part of the interview is just seeing if the manager likes you and if they feel like you would fit in with their current employees. Most people can be trained to do anything, so don’t let lack of training or experience intimidate you. Accentuate your positive attributes such as being a team player and a person who is excited to learn new things. You will have that first job before you know it and be missing the laid back days of nursing school! Article provided by Constant-Content.com

7 Reasons It’s Great to Work in Manufacturing
T
by Zachary Smith
he manufacturing industry is one of the largest and most influential sectors of the United States economy. It also accounts for a similarly large piece of the American workforce—the industry employs 8.7 percent of the country, making it the third-largest industry in terms of jobs.
But what is it like for the millions of people who actually work in the industry? The truth is, it’s pretty fantastic. Here are some reasons why:
Contributing To The Economy
The manufacturing industry helps support the global and national economies, as well as individuals and families. Research shows that manufacturing is ranked among the most important industries in maintaining a strong U.S. economy and eight in 10 Americans believe U.S. manufacturing is important to maintain Americans’ standard of living.

Every dollar spent in manufacturing contributes another $1.81 to the economy, allowing the industry to add nearly $2.2 trillion to the U.S. economy. Research also shows that manufacturing has the highest multiplier effect of any other major sector. In fact, every dollar spent in manufacturing contributes another $1.81 to the economy, allowing the industry to add nearly $2.2 trillion to the U.S. economy. Clearly, manufacturing is having a big impact on jobs, livelihoods and the economy. That’s something to be proud of.
On The Cutting Edge
We’ve talked about this at length before, but manufacturing has always been on the cutting edge of technology. 3D printing, drones, and the Internet of Things are just the latest examples of manufacturing companies adopting new technology long before the public gets their hands on it. And, for all the tech heads in the industry, that is the best reason to get up and go to work each day. It’s good to be ahead of the curve.

For some, relaying details about their jobs may be met with disinterest and boredom. But that’s not the case for those in manufacturing who can regale friends about developement in aerospace, share the latest in food manufacturing with families over Thanksgiving dinner, or tell neighbors about the newest pharmaceuticals they are processing. With so much excitement within the industry, you’ll have plenty of awesome information to share with those outside of it.
It’s Totally Safe
A huge myth the industry has been fighting for decades is how unsafe manufacturing is. And for a long time, it absolutely was a high risk career path plagued by chemicals,

But we’ve come a long way. Robots are making our jobs safer, and technology like the Internet of Things and automation keeps us out of harms way. We are working smarter, and safer, than ever before.

Fruits Of Your Labor
One of the great benefits to working in this industry is the fact that you are often working on real, tangible products. Whether working on every day items you can buy at the store or huge set pieces for blockbuster movies, you can point to something and get the very satisfying pleasure of saying “I made that.” That’s more than most service or white collar jobs can say.
Synchrony is more than a workplace—we’re a working forward place. A place that helps fulfill ambitions. A place where you’ll ensure customers succeed and we’ll do the same for you: through an extensive Diversity & Inclusion Network, leaders who believe differences are a competitive advantage, and a culture that celebrates you. Because we know you have goals of your own. And we’re here to help you achieve them.

Room To Grow
Once you choose a sector to go into, there are plenty of options for your career path. From fabrication and welding to research and distribution, the possibilities seem endless. And as the baby boomer generation begins to retire, leadership opportunities will be available for the next generation of manufacturers to take the reigns. There is always room to grow and advance your career. There are also jobs within the manufacturing sector for those from other disciplines, such as sales and business development, marketing, human resources, and many others. These positions afford all of the benefits of working in manufacturing—the pride, stability, competitive salaries, excitement, great technology and others—to people from many different backgrounds. Not every industry can boast of the same potential and flexibility. Article provided by https://blog.thomasnet.com Copyright© 2018 Thomas Publishing Company.

Be prepared for possible resistance from more traditional elements in either the industry, education, or maybe even from your family. When you know there will be obstacles, you can better prepare yourself for them. A woman looking to go into engineering or even help desk will see few role models. There is also research that says if you’re the only woman interviewing for a position, you’re the outlier” and less likely to even get the job. You may also end up being the only woman in the company. Which may mean harassment, being a marginal member of the team, or maybe nothing worse than being the only person who thinks that loud farts aren’t funny. “Don’t be afraid! If you are thinking about it, I’d recommend two things: first, explore it and make it real to remove some of the fear of the unknown. Second, find a mentor – male or female. Figure out what is important to you and what kind of professional you want to be in 10-15 years, then build your tribe to support you in the journey. When it gets difficult and you begin questioning yourself, your actions, and your choices, you need people around you to reinforce your efforts, give you energy and help continue to push you forward. And don’t expect it to be easy or fair; in fact, the journey will likely be harder for you than the guy sitting next to you. See this added challenge as a way to harden and sharpen your resolve, because being truly successful — no matter who you are — requires grit. Never compromise, either. Stay true to yourself and to being a woman, don’t sell-out and think you have to play by the guys’ rules. Do the right thing and never sacrifice what you believe for a job, promotion or any company. At the end of the day the only thing you truly own is your reputation – your brand, what you’ve built, what you’ve learned and your own potential,”
“Do what you love and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. The passion and curiosity you bring to the table will fuel your success– doing what you love brings that all together. Also, get over your imposter syndrome and find your confidence and your voice — anyone who feels fully in control of their job needs a bigger challenge. There are so many decision points where capable women can easily opt Figure out what is important to you out of tech into other fields, that if and what kind of professional you want you remain in the field, you’re likely quite good. The Ways that Veterans can Apply Military Thinking to Everyday Life by Paul Maplesden
As
a veteran, you know the value of friendship, training, experience and decision making. When you serve in the armed forces, lives rely on everyone working together towards a larger purpose. Military thinking can also be very useful after you have served and veterans can excel in many areas including: • Friendship, teamwork and listening • Decision making and leadership • Looking after yourself
FRIENDSHIP, TEAMWORK AND LISTENING
Veterans learn to be part of a team When you’re in the military, you trust your life to the people around you. In life or death situations, everyone has to do their jobs properly, without question or hesitation. In civilian life, this makes it easier to appreciate how important it is to have a team around you that you can trust. You’re the perfect team member, listening, acting and understanding what’s best for everyone. Veterans become better listeners In the military, you learn to listen to, understand and obey those with more experience or seniority. Outside the military, this can be extremely helpful as you’re more likely to pay attention when someone has something valuable to add, rather than just trying to get your own opinion across.
Veterans truly value the people around them.

equal opportunity employment journal In the armed forces, planning, strategy and minimizing risk are vital, and wherever possible you will act to maximize your own strengths and advantages. In your personal life and the world of business, this can mean that you find it easier to understand risk, control it wherever possible and act in the ways that are most likely to be good for you and those around you.
Veterans value the people around them much more When you’re trusting your life to a squad mate, that trust creates a very strong bond between you. It deepens friendships, camaraderie and the trust that you place in other people. Outside the military, it means that you tend to hold on to your closest friends, rely on them and develop closer ties with your loved ones.
DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP
Veterans can make quick, confident decisions Lives can be saved or lost on the basis of a good or bad decision. Military strategy teaches you to make fast, confident decisions based on the information that’s available at the time. One of the great drawbacks of modern life is having too much choice and procrastinating about the right thing to do. Veterans often find it much easier to make and stick to a decision. Veterans rely on their wits and instinct The military has come to rely more and more on technology, but the best soldiers trust their wits, instinct and training above everything else. Technology can always go wrong or break down, but if you’ve got the right understanding of the situation and the expertise to deal with it, that puts you in a much better position than those that rely on technology to do everything. This means that you’re often better prepared and more flexible when things don’t go exactly to plan. Veterans understand and manage risk better In the armed forces, planning, strategy and minimizing risk are vital, and wherever possible you will act to maximize your own strengths and advantages. In your personal life and the world of business, this can mean that you find it easier to understand risk, control it wherever possible and act in the ways that are most likely to be good for you and those around you. Veterans lead by example If there’s a truth of leadership in the military, it’s ‘Show, Don’t Tell’. The best commanders are those that lead by example, that understand what needs to be done and don’t hesitate to do it themselves. In civilian life, this means that you can demonstrate things to others more easily, and that you often have solid, rational thinking behind your decisions.

Building a Better Future
Together
LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF
The military teaches you to look after your appearance The focus in the military on having the perfect appearance - Cleanly pressed uniform, perfect shoes, short hair and appearing clean and tidy can have benefits in civilian life. Not only does it make you stand out from others that don’t care about how they look, it also gives you an advantage in job interviews, positions of authority or anytime that you’re in the public eye. Veterans think about their diet and appreciate good food more The armed forces consider proper nutrition and diet to be very important, which makes you much more aware of the food and drink that you’re putting into your body. Military rations are designed for nutrition rather than flavor and because meals can be hard to come by whilst out on operations, it’s vital to eat as well as possible, when you can. When you leave the military, this understanding of food means that you’re able to appreciate the nutrition, flavor and texture of food more easily than others.
Building tomorrow starts with you. Find your dream job today, and be part of something great.
In closing
This is just a small selection of the military skills and experience that veterans can find incredibly useful in everyday life. Because of your expertise, you are often very well placed to provide practical, useful advice, assistance and support to help your loved ones and colleagues make the most of every situation. WHY TEACHERS MATTER!
W
hy do teachers matter? It might seem like a simple question but it’s one with many answers. Teachers are important to every community on our planet. They contribute to each aspect of society and their influence touches all our lives. Teachers matter in so many different ways.
1. They have the most important job in the world
We believe that every teacher in every community around the globe has an equally heroic role. They are shaping the way our children see the world and guiding the next generation. The have the most important job in the world as the future of our communities and societies as a whole is in their hands.

We pledge equal access to a teaching environment that supports diversity and equality regardless of race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin, or disability.
2. T hey help under-achievers fly and keep over-achievers grounded
Every teacher knows that there are some children who put their hand up for every question, who long to be noticed and crave attention. And there are others who only want to stay quietly at the back of the class and strive to be invisible. It takes the special skill of teachers to encourage the quiet ones to speak out and have confidence in their ability. And also to keep able children grounded and respectful of others.
3. T hey listen, coach and mentor — Teachers do so much more than teach
In Palestine, one teacher has devised innovative new ways to help children cope with the violence that’s part of their everyday lives. In Mumbai, a teacher helps girls trapped in Mumbai’s sex industry to change the direction of their lives. All over the world we see examples of teachers going beyond the call of duty to be agents of positive social change.
4. They make the mundane extraordinary
In Malaysia, Noorjahan Sultan has devised a brilliant rhyming method to teach her students English. In Palestine, Jawdat Sisan uses dances and drama to bring his lessons to life. Whether it’s baking cakes to explain plant cell structure or using the chunks of a chocolate bar to illuminate fractions, teachers are constantly inventing ingenious ways to make complex problems easy and dull subjects exciting. It’s what makes teaching one of the most creative careers in the world.
5. They simplify the complex
It’s that ‘eureka’ moment; when a student suddenly understands a problem or concept that had previously seemed incomprehensible. The mist lifts and the bewildering suddenly become clear. Great teachers have the special ability to achieve that breakthrough, make the complicated simple and make a child’s eyes light up.
6. They help us reveal our skills
Every child has their strengths and their own unique talents. For some students however, it takes time to reveal them and dedication to nurture them. Careful, patient teaching brings out the best in all of us and helps us to fulfill our potential.
7. They teach us life skills
The best teachers know that knowing how to sew on a button can be as important as the ability to solve equations. So they don’t just teach 123 and ABC. They equip us for life ahead with the practical skills we need to survive and the communication skills we need to thrive in the adult world.
8. They are quiet heroes
Their day begins before their students are even awake and can carry on long into the evening. They work in front of children, the world’s toughest audience with patience and understanding. They do one of the most important jobs in the world for little financial reward. We think teachers are the quiet heroes of our communities.
9. They educate us
If you can read, write or solve an equation, you know who to thank. So much of what we know about the world comes from our teachers who equip us with the knowledge, skills and wisdom we need in our lives. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
10. They inspire us
Some of the world’s most famous people point to a special teacher as the inspiration behind their success. For Oprah Winfrey it was her fourth grade teacher, Mrs Duncan, who she describes as her ‘first liberator.’ British actress Helen Mirren, dedicated her Bafta award to her old English teacher while Microsoft founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, remembers his Maths and English teachers with special reverence. ‘There’s no way there’d be a Microsoft without them doing what they did,’ he says. our-fifths of the American workforce have jobs that require no physical labor which means that many of them let their work office get cluttered by accumulating an excess amount of papers or files. Having a clean and clutter-free environment helps us think better and naturally makes us more productive. On the other hand, a messy work space makes it harder for you to find what you need and will make your work life seem chaotic and uncontrolled. It will also leave a bad impression on clients and co-workers as an Adecco study found that 57% of workers judge their peers based on the cleanliness of their workplace. If your desk looks like a tornado just ripped through your office, try these tips to clean it up. 1) Keep only what you need. This should go without say, but your desk probably has a ton of assorted items that you never use: old cups, random papers, various office supplies that remain untouched, and so on. Your most important items should be within arm's length and everything else should be stored away. 2) Keep an inventory log. This will help you keep track of all the different things that you own and will help you decide which items that need to get rid of. You will probably find that you have way more items than you actually need. 3) Beware of filing cabinets. Filing cabinets might be the go-to option to store all your excess loose papers and random documents, but stuffing them into a cabinet doesn't get rid of the mess; it only displaces it. Go through all your papers and decide what is important and what isn't. Recycle the ones you don't need as they are doing nothing more than taking up space. 4) Clearly file papers where they need to be. For all those papers you decided to keep, make sure that they are kept in an organized manner and not thrown all over the desk. You can keep In and Out trays to distinguish which documents you need to look at and which ones can be filed away. Do this whenever you get a new

document so that it doesn't get misplaced and forgotten about. 5) Set up a place for short-term storage. A basket for your short-term documents such as flyers, magazines, letters, newspapers, and spam mail is good to have. You will know that those documents are the less important ones and that they can be cleaned out at the end of the day. 6) Don't be afraid to dispose of things. Here's a simple rule to follow: when in doubt, throw it out. You probably don't need that two week old note that you have been saving for whatever reason. You also shouldn't be holding onto the random flyer you got in the mail three days ago. Know that it's okay to get rid of what you don't need. You will thank yourself in the end. 7) Keep a trash can and recycling bin near by. You will be less motivated to throw things out if you have to get up and walk across the office to do so. Keep one within arm's reach so that it's easily accessible at all times. 8) Use disinfectant. Just because your desk is spotless doesn't mean that it's clean. There may be thousands of invisible germs just waiting to get into your body. Part of staying healthy means disinfecting regularly so that you don't have to worry about getting sick. 9) Clean at a scheduled time. Make sure that you take some time out of each day, or each week if you're too busy, to clean up and organize your desk. This could be the last five minutes before you go home or the last fifteen minutes each Friday afternoon. Make it a good habit and you will be rewarded. Actively cleaning up your desk is a great habit to get into as letting the clutter fill your workplace will only make you miserable. It may seem tedious at first, but the benefits of putting in a little extra work to keep a clean desk far outweigh the consequences of feeling dirty and unproductive at work.
