ike millions of others, I have a Facebook account. I scroll fairly quickly, reading my “friends’” posts, sometimes playing a game with myself to see if I can tell who posted a photo or an opinion before I confirm who actually did...and I'm getting better at answering correctly. I'm sure that's because each of us actually has a voice and a perspective that can come to be known as individual, and it has influence over those who hear or see it. Online is an easy example, but where we work is also influenced by our personal voice and perspective. Take diversity and inclusion for an example. It can seem like a big issue that should be "fixed" by managers and the "higher-ups" who make and enforce company policy. But the truth of the matter is that companies are made up of individuals whose attitudes and behaviors are a huge influencing factor. If each of us individually began acting toward a goal with our desire for inclusion in mind, things would move in that direction exponentially. This makes me think of the African proverb, (that a friend posted on Facebook last week), “If you think you're too small to make a difference, you haven't spent the night in a closed room with a mosquito.” Don't let your brain trick you into thinking that your indiviual contribution to the larger whole doesn't matter. It does. An important point to remember, especially now, when your opportunity to vote in the mid-term elections is right around the corner.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
E
www.nationalhispanicmonth.org
ach year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

The percentage of U.S. workers employed in healthcare and social assistance has been growing for more than six decades – from about 3% in the 1950s to more than 12% as of 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. By 2026, it is projected to hit 13.8% and become the largest industry sector by employment. An aging population, along with a greater focus on preventative care, is translating into rising demand for qualified managers and administrators with strong management skills. Employment of medical and health services managers, a category of professionals that includes healthcare administrators, will jump by 20% between 2016 and 2026, the BLS projects. That growth rate is nearly three times higher than the national average (7%) for all occupations during the same decade. The average annual wage for medical and health services managers nationwide was $111,680 as of May 2017, the U.S. Department of Labor reports. Salary potential, like employment opportunities, will vary according to factors such as economic conditions, geographic location, industry type, and an individual’s educational qualifications and work history. Prospective candidates should conduct independent research into the employment market.
September 2018 The Changing Landscape of Healthcare
From the equipment and technology used daily to the specialization in services and the delivery of care to patients, healthcare is evolving and transforming in many ways. Keeping pace with these sweeping changes requires trained and talented management teams with a diversity of skills. Healthcare leaders in the 21st century must be innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers and effective agents of change. Continuous challenges bring the prospect of an exciting and interesting career, where each day differs from the last and the next.
How to Become a Healthcare Manager
Nationwide, about 1 in 9 jobs require graduate-level or higher qualifications, an increase of more than 60% since the early 1970s, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. That trend is mirrored in the healthcare field, where launching a career in healthcare leadership or management increasingly requires a master’s degree in a field such as healthcare administration or management, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. These graduate degree programs typically provide a higher level of healthcare-specific business knowledge that can be applied to real-world situations in hospitals, medical practices, surgery centers and other facilities. What are some of the core attributes and knowledge required of healthcare administrators and managers? • Ability to lead and inspire • Analytical skills
equal opportunity employment journal • Organizational skills • Understanding of policy • Strong decision-making • Interpersonal skills • Ability to manage and collaborate with diverse groups • Data mining and analysis • Strong verbal and written communication Specialized degree programs, such as a Master of Science (MS) in Healthcare Administration, are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of healthcare management, including policy issues, ethical leadership and process improvement.

With advanced educational qualifications, training and experience, healthcare professionals may be able to pursue positions in administration and management, including: • Director of nursing administration • Government relations director • Medical staff relations manager • Chief executive officer For qualified and dedicated professionals, a career in healthcare management can bring an array of rewarding opportunities to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others every day. eading an eco-friendly lifestyle does not stop when you leave the home. You can also stick to your green values while you are at work. Here are a few ideas for ways that you can reduce your impact on the environment while in the office.
Recycle Everything
Paper is the main material that gets wasted in the office, so try to recycle as much of it as you can. Arrange for a recycling company to collect your waste paper every week or fortnight, and you can instantly save all of that paper from going to waste. You can also place recycle bins at various locations around the office, which will make it easy for everyone to do their bit.

Recycling waste is a good idea, but reusing items is even more eco-friendly. You don't have to stick to paper. You could also set up a mixed recycling bin to collect tins, plastic bottles, and glass, so that everyone in the office can recycle as much as possible.

Recycling waste is a good idea, but reusing items is even more eco-friendly. Rather than throwing paper away, create a pile of scrap paper that can be used to make notes or to print rough documents, and this will save you having to buy new paper.
September 2018

If you no longer need something, like an item of furniture or stationery, find someone who will make use of it rather than throwing it away. There are plenty of websites where you can send your items to people who will use them again, helping you to avoid throwing anything out unnecessarily.
Replace Your Lightbulbs

reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing new PCs, and you could also make some significant savings.
Go Paperless
You may not be able to run a completely paperless office, but you can do your best to use paper as little as possible. For a start, try to avoid printing anything unless you absolutely have to. For example, you could make it a policy in the office to scan documents and send them via email rather than printing them out. When you do print a document, ask yourself whether you could print it in the rough mode, which will cut down on the amount of ink you use.
People often leave the lights on all day in the office, which is necessary in spaces with little natural light. If you want to cut down on your electricity usage, simply replace all of the lightbulbs with energyefficient bulbs. This may involve making a small investment, but you will save significant amounts of electricity. Go Green at Work Opt for Refurbished PCs Try to make changes in the office that will benefit the environment. If you need to buy some new computers, ask yourself whether you Going green at work is often easy to do, and it can even help you to save really need new ones. ost people think that having a career in finance means handling money, a job full of numbers and that unless you devote every hour of the day to knowing the ins and outs of financial rules, then you should be looking for career opportunities elsewhere. That is a myth. In fact, many business careers in finance are very interesting and range from working with people on personal levels to high-level commercial finance ventures that deal with broad scope processes, rather than chasing down every penny.
Corporate Finance
Corporate finance careers involve working directly for a company, or as a consultant, and making sure the finances of a business are not only sustainable, but profitable. Corporate finance jobs typically involve taking a look at how a company spends money (overhead, production, payroll, etc.), how much revenue the business makes, and then drawing up plans to make everything run more efficiently (if possible) and making projections that enable the business to grow, meet long-term goals, and become more profitable, overall. A person who can perform the functions of a corporate finance position is in great demand.
Financial Advisors
In the world of business finance careers, financial advisors are sought after because they know the latest tax laws and regulations, and can handle everything from personal portfolios with a worth of under $50K on up to business finances comprising hundreds of millions of dollars. Financial advisors will not only assist with taxes, but they will utilize their broad knowledge of insurance and investments to make sure people and businesses are getting the most out of their money.
Investment Finance
The major role of an investment finance career is that of a facilitator. Investment finance deals with people and businesses that need working capital, and then bringing resources to the table in the form of investors, potential partners, financial institutions, or anything else in order to structure a solution for the clients. Investment financiers usually receive a very nice salary (if they work for a firm) or a healthy broker’s fee, if they work independently. Businesses, in particular, are always in need of extra money, and being able to facilitate deals that meet the needs of those businesses put this finance career in great demand, with no shortage of clients.
Collectors
Financial institutions sometimes run unto problems with borrowers who are unable to repay loans in a timely manner, or who have defaulted completely on money owed to the institution. In the private and commercial sector, corporations who are owed money from clients will often sell those accounts to collectors so that the business does not have to deal
September 2018
equal opportunity employment journal
Page 11
with the headache of tracking down the money they are owed. The job of the collector is to hunt down and get those payments. In many cases, this involves meeting with the clients who are in debt to these institutions and structuring a solution to get back that money. This means the people (or businesses) make monthly installments – sometimes with the collector’s fee, if this is being settled by an independent firm – until the amount owed is fully paid off.
Public Accounting
Accounting covers a broad spectrum of services, for private individuals as well as businesses. Like those with jobs in corporate finance, public accounting keeps track of incoming and outgoing money for a household or business, delivering reports and suggestions to reduce spending and increase revenue. Accountants are hired to work in-house at many organizations, and also function as auditors so business owners can get an overview of how healthy the finances are so they can make projections to meet long-term goals. There is never a shortage of clients from the private and commercial sectors for certified accountants, and most people choosing finance careers in accounting end up working for larger accounting firms, or they get hired to work in-house for a corporation.
Many people worth through banks, major lending and accounting firms, and even as independent agents in the field of finance in order to help individuals and businesses with their financial needs. Loan Officers
Loan officers work in a field a commercial finance that does the majority of the leg work before any lending agreements are drawn up. This business finance career assesses the value of financial holdings and assets of a company in order to figure out what lending options are available. Many loans cannot be secured without collateral, and a loan officer places a value – figuring in cost, upkeep, depreciation, etc. – of those assets, and then takes the amount the business is asking for and matches it with the appropriate type of loan. Some banks are restricted in what they can accept as collateral, and they are also limited by the amount of money they can lend. In these cases, a loan officer may refer the business to private investors, alternative lending methods, or work with a partner from the investment finance field (see above) in order to put together a solution that meets the needs of the business owner.

he job market is becoming more specific and waves of college graduates join the competition each year. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get a company to notice you, let alone hire you. No longer can you throw a generic resume out into the field and expect to get a call. You will need an aggressive and intelligent approach. Think of yourself as a business and your potential employers as your customers. You need to get their attention and convince them that you have what they want. To do that you must put together an impressive marketing campaign.
Target Your Audience
Every day thousands of hopeful job seekers are disappointed when they are turned down before having the opportunity to interview. After spending hours or days honing their resume to perfection, to completely describe their strengths, the prospective business didn’t even look twice. A common mistake people make with their resume is that they only have one. To give yourself a competitive advantage over your fellow job seekers, you should develop a separate resume for each job you apply to. This doesn’t mean that a complete overhaul is necessary every time you find a different position to apply for. It should, however, be slightly modified to please each employer. These employers are looking for certain buzz words within a resume to make a person stand out. By analyzing the job posting you can identify these keywords and incorporate them into your resume. You won’t have to change much, just a few words or sentences strewn about your resume. This will increase the likelihood of getting to the next step in the job hunt.
Networking
Think about how many people you know who got a job because they knew someone. A referral can go a really long way in finding a job. It’s comparable to noticing a red shirt amongst a sea of whites. You are instantly distinguishable before your resume is even read. Talk to your friends and family. Someone is bound to know of a position that you are qualified for. If they can put in a good word for you, then your foot is in the door.
Quantity
You may have your dream job in mind and nothing else will do. Sometimes it’s necessary to lower your standards a little. In order to get your name out there, you may have to apply for jobs that aren’t exactly what you are looking for. These jobs will allow you to meet the individuals who do the hiring for those companies and other positions could open up that you would be a great fit for. Just because you interview for a job doesn’t mean you have to take it. A best practice is to attend as many interviews as possible. You will hone your craft and possibly have several positions to choose from. Try to open as many doors as possible.
Diversify
Looking for work is the worst time to put all of your eggs in one basket. Using one job site or the classifieds will not get you the results you are looking for. You should use every avenue available to enhance your visibility. Use a multitude of jobsites and submit your resume on all of them. Be sure to check your local classifieds and check the websites

Even if the job isn’t posted on their website, contacting a company directly can give a sizeable boost to your efforts. While on the job hunt, try to continue improving yourself. Look into getting certifications that will improve your chances of standing out in the field. Learning another language or going back to school and further your education will not only be immediate resume builders, but will help you later in your career. Employers want to see that you haven’t been idle while between jobs. An active schedule of bettering yourself, networking, and volunteering will look fantastic in an interview. Before you can hope to get a job, you have to make yourself visible to employers. Once a higher level of visibility is established, focus on separating yourself from the competition. Following these tips will give you a competitive advantage when applying for open positions. While getting an interview is a great feeling, it doesn’t mean the war is one. The interview process is another battle altogether.

onsidering a career in engineering? Smart move—particularly if career growth, stability, and job opportunity are important to you. There are a variety of career paths in engineering and your income prospects are excellent. The number of STEM jobs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is projected to grow more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022. College graduates with an engineering degree earn higher-than-average salaries. According to a recent National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) study, the average salary for college graduates earning engineering degrees is $64,891– the highest average salary for all academic majors.
What Do You Do with a Degree in Engineering?
Create. Design. Tear down. Build up. Build big. Build small. Speed up. Slow down. Rethink. Process. Analyze. Invent. And repeat. In other words, what you do with an engineering degree is: imagine, make, and do. Engineers apply their knowledge of how things work and make things work better. Engineers turn ideas into reality. Almost every single thing we use every day has been engineered in some way. Almost every technological innovation has, at some point or another, been placed under the care of someone with a degree in engineering. For that next big thing, that person could be you. Many who enter the engineering field do so because they are fascinated by how things work, and they also know that the career opportunities in the engineering field continue to grow. If you are looking for a job that can have a positive impact on you personally and professionally, you don’t have to look any further than a career in engineering.

Careers in Education
E
ducation is a career that goes back to ancient times. Aristotle, the founder of science (384-322 BC), said “Teachers who educate children deserve more honor than parents who merely gave birth; for bare life is furnished by the one, the other ensures a good life.” Our society values lifelong education. Children between the ages of roughly 5 and 18 years, depending on the state, must attend a private or public school. But that is only part of the career potential: Higher education institutions, businesses, and government provide ongoing education; some children need special education; university-bound students hire private tutors; and institutions such as seniors’ residences and prisons offer programs. Thus, applicants with the right skill set, qualifications, and motivation are in constant demand. All education careers hinge on population structure. For example, a baby boom shifts the newly hired teacher’s rewards to the younger population, but increasing longevity shifts the rewards to teaching older adults. Let’s look at where some opportunities lie:
Public Elementary and High School Teaching
Most people think of Teacher (Bachelor’s degree, $40,000 – $55,000) first, because most of us have attended a publicly funded school. But some distinctions are worth observing: An Elementary School Teacher ( $31,000 – $46,000; 2009 median $41,000) teaches students through Grade Eight. Education requirements vary, but will usually include teacher training. A Bachelors degree, especially in education, would considerably improve career chances. A Junior High School Teacher (Bachelors, probably teacher training; $34,000 and $51,000) straddles upper elementary school and early high school. Some specialization in the Bachelors degree (history, biology, art) is likely an asset. The High School Teacher (Bachelors/Masters; $41,000 – $63,000) should specialize in a subject area for career advancement. For example, in Biology (Bachelors; $30,000 – $40,000), Chemistry (Bachelors; $32,000 – $45,000, up to $65,000), or History (Bachelors/Masters; $34,000

One area worth considering is Special Education Teacher (Bachelors degree; $30,000 – $51,000). In many places, government programs provide extra funds to hire teachers who can help children with development issues learn. A person who must get started right away without much pre-job training, should consider Preschool Teacher (high school diploma; $20,000 – $30,000) or Teacher’s Assistant (possibly high school diploma;$16,000 – $25,000), keeping in mind that these opportunities are not a career path unless one is prepared to seek further education. Both may offer free onthe-job training that assists the goal. Private elementary and high school teaching offers similar opportunities, but varying financial rewards, compared with the public system. Private schools where parents can pay whatever excellence costs usually pay more, but religiously supported schools may pay less, and may also feature lifestyle requirements or professions of faith. Tutoring is an option for qualified teachers with good references who need flexibility, especially amid life or career transitions.
equal opportunity employment journal Adult education
This field comes in two basic flavors: A Self-Enrichment Education Teacher (High School Diploma, specialized qualifications; $33,000 – $61,000) teaches adults disciplines they want to learn, in business or leisure settings. There are also many opportunities for the Adult Literacy Teacher (Bachelors Degree; $44,710 average) or Remedial Education Teacher (Bachelors degree; $43,000 – $57,000) to help disadvantaged adults achieve.
Vocational Training
The Vocational Teacher ( Bachelors plus relevant work experience; $31,000 – $49,000) teaches practical skills — cosmetology, auto repair, or plumbing, for example — skills that can secure a good living. Some skills are more in demand and may feature fewer educational requirements. Consider, for example, Auto Shop Teacher (much work experience; $50,000 – $65,000, up to $70,000) is an example.
All education careers hinge on population structure. For example, a baby boom shifts Administration of an the newly hired teacher’s rewards to the educational institution younger population, but increasing longevity The Principal ($60,000 – $100,000) or shifts the rewards to teaching older adults. A Professor (Doctorate; $55,000 – $110,000), A Community College Professor (Doctorate; up who teaches at a university, is expected to help to $130,000, 2009 median $76,000) is more develop the field in which he or she works by likely to be evaluated on teaching experience.

GETTING IT RIGHT: Understanding and Managing Diversity in the Workplace
A
by Eric Dyson
ccording to a recent demographic analysis conducted by the Pew Research Center, by 2055, the U.S. will no longer have a single racial or ethnic majority. This shift towards a more diverse population will have major impacts on the workforce and how organizations address diversity in the workplace. In the coming years, organizations that understand how to manage diversity in the workplace effectively will hold a distinct advantage when it comes to recruiting and hiring talent. This post outlines how organizations can best approach and manage diversity in the workplace with actionable tips and advice.
What is Diversity in the Workplace?
For an organization looking to cultivate a more diverse and inclusive workplace, it is important to understand what constitutes workplace diversity. Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between individuals in an organization. Diversity not only includes how individuals identify themselves but also how others perceive them. Diversity within a workplace encompasses race, gender, ethnic groups, age, religion, sexual orientation, citizenship status, military service and mental and physical conditions, as well as other distinct differences between people.
What are the Benefits of Diversity in the Workplace?
There are many benefits to having a diverse workplace. For starters, organizations that commit to recruiting a diverse workforce have a larger pool of applicants to choose from, which can lead to finding more qualified candidates and reducing the time it takes to fill vacant positions. Businesses that do not recruit from diverse talent pools run the risk of missing out on qualified candidates and may have a more difficult time filling key roles, which increases recruitment costs. According to a survey conducted by Glassdoor, 67 percent of job seekers said a diverse workforce is important when considering job offers and 57 percent of employees think their companies should be more diverse. These numbers are telling. Not only can organizations fill positions with qualified candidates more quickly by recruiting from different talent pools, but a diverse workforce also benefits their employer brand which is crucial when it comes to getting the right talent. Having a diverse workforce with multi-lingual employees and employees from varying ethnic backgrounds can also be helpful for organizations who want to expand or improve operations in international, national, regional and local markets.
More benefits to having diversity in the workplace:
Employees from diverse backgrounds imbue organizations with creative new ideas and perspectives informed by their cultural experiences A diverse workplace will help organizations better understand target demographics and what moves them.

A diverse workplace can better align an organization’s culture with the demographic make-up of America Increased customer satisfaction by improving how employees interact with a diverse clientele and public How to Manage Diversity in the Workplace Managing diversity in the workplace presents a set of unique challenges for HR professionals. These challenges can be mitigated if an organization makes a concerted effort to encourage a more heterogeneous environment through promoting a culture of tolerance, open communication and creating conflict management strategies to address issues that may arise. For leadership to effectively manage diversity in the workplace, they need to understand their backgrounds and how their behavior and beliefs can affect their decision-making within a diverse environment.
Tips for managing diversity in the workplace: Prioritize communication
To manage a diverse workplace, organizations need to ensure that they effectively communicate with employees. Policies, procedures, safety rules and other important information should be designed to overcome language and cultural barriers by translating materials and using pictures and symbols whenever applicable.
Treat each employee as an individual
Avoid making assumptions about employees from different backgrounds. Instead, look at each employee as an individual and judge successes and failures on the individual’s merit rather than attributing actions to their background.
Encourage employees to work in diverse groups
Diverse work teams let employees get to know and value one another on an individual basis and can help break down preconceived notions and cultural misunderstandings.
Base standards on objective criteria THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS
Set one standard of rules for all groups of employees regardless of background. Ensure that all employment actions, including discipline, follow this standardized criteria to make sure each employee is treated the same.
Be open-minded
Recognize, and encourage employees to recognize, that one’s own experience, background, and culture are not the only with value to the organization. Look for ways to incorporate a diverse range of perspectives and talents into efforts to achieve organizational goals.
Hiring
To build a diverse workplace, it is crucial to recruit and hire talent from a variety of backgrounds. This requires leadership and others who make hiring decisions to overcome bias in interviewing and assessing talent. If organizations can break through bias and hire the most qualified people, those with the right education, credentials, experience and skill sets, a diverse workplace should be the natural result.

Tips for hiring a diverse workforce:
Incorporate a diverse interview panel to ensure candidates are chosen solely based on suitability for the position. Managers should be trained on what can and cannot be asked in an interview. For example, questions about an applicant’s personal life, such as which church they attend, their romantic life and political beliefs, are off-limits. Get creative when recruiting. For example, if an organization would like to hire more women in the engineering department, they could reach out to professional groups that cater to women in engineering and ask to advertise open positions in their newsletter or member communications.
Policies and Practices
Organizations that embrace diversity also need to ensure that there are policies and practices in place to protect employees’ rights and stay compliant with government regulations. It is essential for an organization to think about the impact that company policies and practices have on a diverse group of employees. Companies should create a way for employees to give feedback with surveys and suggestion boxes to gain a better understanding of how employees feel about diversity policies. Any feedback received, both positive and negative, is valuable. Companies need to be ready to adapt and change policies that may be interpreted as obstructions or not helpful for employees.
September 2018
equal opportunity employment journal
In addition to the written policies, it is also essential to ensure that the non-official “rules” of an organization are thoroughly explained to all employees to communicate company values and culture to all workers effectively.
Documentation of Policies and Procedures
Properly documenting diversity policies is an effective means of communicating an organization’s stances on diversity. Once concrete plans are ready to be implemented, documents that outline each policy should be included in the employee handbook. Diversity policies should be reviewed with every new hire, and when updates to policies are made, they should be shared with current employees as well.
Employee handbooks should cover diversity in the following sections:

edical jobs are almost always in demand, but these jobs are expected to grow the most in the 10-year period ending in 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational projections report. Of the 30 fastest-growing careers on the list of occupations, six of them were in the healthcare field. Those six top health careers are listed below. Home Health Aides
Home health aides are projected at the highest rate of growth, with 50 percent growth expected by 2018. While the pay for home health aids can just above minimum wage, the plus side is the availability of jobs and the fact that no college degree is required.

Registered Nurse
Registered Nurses (RN) are third on the list for top growth in medical careers, with a projected increase of 22.2 percent. Over a half million more RN jobs are expected to be added in the ten year period ending in 2018. Registered nursing requires at least an associate's degree, which is the most common education level for RNs according to the BLS, but many RNs also have a bachelor's degree as well. Because they have some college-level education, RNs are paid higher than medical assistants and home health aides.
Medical Assistants
Medical assisting is another health career that does not require a college degree, and it is second on the list with a projected growth of 33.9 percent from 2008-2018. Medical assistants assist nurses and doctors with basic tasks such as drawing blood, giving injections, taking the patient's vital signs, prepping exam rooms, and assisting with minor procedures. While there are certification programs for medical assisting, most medical assistants are trained on the job.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
LPN/LVN jobs come in at number five on the list due to a projected growth rate of 20.7 percent in the ten year period ending in 2018. Becoming an LPN or LVN doesn't require as much college as becoming an RN. Therefore, the pay for LVNs & LPNs is typically less than that of RNs. LVNs and LPNs are a "step above" medical assistants in terms of pay grade and education level requirements, however.

Physicians and Surgeons
Demand for physicians is expected to grow by 21.8 percent in the ten year period ending in 2018, with the addition of about 144,000 jobs. This is an alarming statistic, as physicians are already in such high demand, and some experts estimate that as many as one out of every ten physician openings goes unfilled. Due to the high level of education (medical doctorate) required to become a physician or surgeon, these professionals are among the highest paid in the healthcare industry.
Employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.3 million new jobs. Nursing Aides, Orderlies, Attendants

WHAT TO DO BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR FEDERAL JOB SEARCH
Before looking at any job announcement, answer this question: what is most important to you in a job? Keep in mind that there are hundreds of agencies, professional fields, and locations for federal employment. This creates a network of approximately two million employees and thousands of open positions. If you are not clear on what you want, you’ll probably get lost in a mesh of agency websites and swallowed by the black hole of open job announcements. On the flipside, if you know what you’re looking for, you can focus your search to a few types of careers or agencies. Additionally, consider what you have to offer an employer. What type of position or employer would most value your skills and education? No employer is excited to hire someone that is not passionate about their work or environment. The federal government is no different. Identifying your specific skill sets will be invaluable as you begin your federal search. Narrowing your interests and abilities is not an easy task. To hone in on one avenue takes knowing what type of position you want to pursue and where you want to work. However, as an applicant, you need to be able to articulate what you want most in an employer so that you find an agency and a position that you are excited about. Consider the environment and workforce conditions as well as the basic details of the position. Researching your options is also essential. If you are not sure where to start, take a look at our agency pages to review the different options that may be available. You can also visit our Best Places to Work website to learn about what current federal employees think about their federal work environments. The publication explores employee satisfaction in areas such as effective leadership, teamwork, training and development, work/life balance, pay and benefits, and more. Best Places to Work is a great resource to getting an insider’s perspective on an agency before you apply. Having answers to many of your questions before you start your federal job search will enable you to spend time and energy on applying for positions that you are most qualified for—and ultimately increase your chances of getting hired.

olice officers play an important role in communities throughout the United States. They go through rigorous training at the police academy to prepare for the responsibility of protecting lives and property in their community. Working in law enforcement requires physical and mental strength as officers deal with stress and dangerous situations on a regular basis. In fact, law enforcement personnel have one of the highest rates of injury and illness related to occupation. Police officers often work for the local, state, or federal government. Some may also work as officers on college and university campuses. Rookie police officers typically have to work their way up the ranks from patrol officer to such coveted positions as a homicide detective.

The law enforcement officer is the front line defense against criminal activity in counties, towns, and cities across the country. Once police cadets finish their training period and begin working for a department, they generally specialize in a particular area, such as fingerprint identification or chemical training. Some officers work with emergency response or SWAT teams, and others may work in the court system and in jails. One recent movement in policing is the idea of “community policing,” in which police officers fight crime by building trust within their patrol neighborhood. Criminal Justice Degree Schools has more information on becoming a police officer available at our law enforcement degree resource, a law enforcement leader interview series and officer requirements for police departments by metro area. Did You Know?: Prior to 1960, less than 5% of law enforcement officers in the United States had any college experience. Today, it is estimated that more than half have a college degree. The education requirements for becoming a police officer vary by state and, in most cases, by city department. The minimum level of education accepted by most police departments is a high school diploma or GED. However, many departments around the country require at least some college coursework or an associate’s degree in criminal justice. Even if it’s not a specific requirement in the hiring process, having an associate’s or bachelor’s degree works strongly in an aspiring police officer’s favor. There is high competition for available positions and promotion within the law enforcement sector, and those with college experience generally stand out during the hiring process. Additionally, a college degree can be a requirement for promotion into higher ranks. There are additional requirements an individual must meet to become a police officer. A candidate must be a US citizen, be 18 to 21 years old depending on the jurisdiction, and meet rigorous physical criteria. Physical criteria include having stamina, agility, adequate vision and hearing, and physical and mental strength. In many cases, candidates who speak a common second language receive preferred hiring status. Similarly, those with military experience are often placed at the front of the line in the hiring process. continued on page 31

Fifteen Great Reasons to Hire Veterans
W
by Althea Warburton
hen you hire veterans, you're choosing from a diverse pool of employees who demonstrate a wide range of knowledge and skills. Veterans possess a commitment to excellence, demonstrated integrity, and a drive to perform the best work possible. With them, you'll find a level of discipline, maturity, and training that is rare in civilian employees. The following are just a few of the things you benefit from when you hire a vet.
1. Diversity
Veterans represent many different walks of life and are accustomed to working with all types of people regardless of race, gender, religion, or ethnicity.
2. Leadership
Veterans are trained by the military to accept and carry out responsibility for resources, tasks, and their own behavior. This special training consists of inspiring leadership in others and motivating others; setting examples; and giving clear and detailed directions.
We are seeking faculty and staff who are committed to the community college mission, actively engaged in promoting diversity, and prepared to use their unique strengths to experiment and innovate in the name of student success.
3. Core Values
While each branch of the military has its own specific set of core values, they all adhere to the same basic principles: commitment, integrity, accountability, and "service before self". Veterans understand the importance of these principles in building a strong team.

Every organization needs structure and rules to prevent chaos and eventual breakdown. This is especially true in the military, which is why individuals in the service are trained to follow specific rules in their work environment. Policies and procedures ensure safety, stability, and productivity. Veterans have an understanding of the value of accountability, and perform their work from this unique perspective. They have learned to demonstrate loyalty to their leaders and units.
6. Ability to Handle Stress and Meet Deadlines
www.minnehahaacademy.net We actively seek those candidates for employment who are competent in their subject area and who are open to continual personal, professional, and spiritual growth.

The Board prohibits, at any district school or school activity, unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any student based on the student’s actual race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or gender expression; the perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.
A typical requirement of military training is that service members be prepared to perform. They must be able to not only do their job, but do it in an efficient manner. Setting priorities, accomplishing missions, and meeting schedules are ongoing responsibilities of individuals in the military. With this responsibility comes added pressure and stress, but military personnel are trained on how to deal with these factors in a constructive way.
7. Advanced Specialized Training
When you hire a veteran, you can be confident you're hiring someone who has received

advanced training in their field. Veterans have been designated a specialized focus, and have completed skill-building education for their individual jobs. They may have also received advanced and cross-referenced training on financial, computerized, engineering, medical, technical, administrative, personnel, or security types of work.
8. Planning and Organizational Skills
Veterans understand that careful planning and workload management are crucial to most military operations. Thoroughly considered objectives, time schedules, strengths and limitations of others, supplies, logistics, resources, and various other factors need to be kept in mind at all times. Evaluation, organization, and adjustment are continuously being analyzed.
9. Technology Skills
Today's military personnel use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Working in the armed forces requires a high degree of technological skill and education to keep up with increasingly complex systems. Military members are frequently among the first to adopt new technology. Many vets have been kept abreast of international trends relating to business, and can bring both technological savvy and a global outlook to your corporation.
10. Self-Direction and Motivation
The military is one of the most demanding institutions in the world. The rigorous training military members receive breeds highly motivated employees who set high goals for themselves and achieve them. Veterans know how to analyze and resolve difficult and complex problems without constant guidance from superiors. When you employ a vet, you're hiring a self-starter who is driven to get the job done right the first time.

The experience veterans have gained in the military make them valuable team players from the very first day on the job. Veterans are used to and enjoy new challenges and opportunities to demonstrate initiative. They are nimble thinkers, and are generous in giving praise to those who earn it.

15. Background and Security Clearance
Hire a vet, and you can gain greater peace of mind knowing you've employed a safe, drug-free individual. Over 90 percent of military members have had extensive background checks run for various security clearance levels. Hiring a veteran reduces the chance your company will be put at risk due to illegal behavior. If security clearance is a requirement of your company, a veteran can be transferred in status. This will save you a good deal in background investigation costs. If you're seeking employees to fill some vacancies at your company, consider hiring a veteran. Vets bring a unique skill and mindset to your organization. They offer a level of skill, professionalism, and work ethic that is rare in today's workforce. When you hire someone who has been employed in the military, you can be sure you're working with someone who has a desire to do the best job possible. Hiring veterans is an economical solution that will strengthen your work team and give you a clear edge on your competition. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Working as a police officer means protecting a community, but it also means having a certain level of respect for working with the public. Future police officers must have a personable demeanor and should enjoy working with people. Applicants must be honest, responsible, and demonstrate integrity. Backgrounds are investigated during the interview process and most applicants are asked to undergo polygraph exams and to submit to drug testing. Prospective police officers should look into the process of the law enforcement agency for which they are applying, but generally, you can expect a process similar to the one below: Accumulate the education and/or experience needed to become a police officer. • Apply for an open police officer position. • Be interviewed for the position. • Complete a physical examination. • Take and pass a drug test. • Take and pass a polygraph exam. • Undergo a background investigation. • Be conditionally hired. • Complete several weeks of required police academy training. • Be hired as a full-time peace officer. • Continue being trained on the job once hired. Please note that a degree cannot guarantee employment or career advancement. Additional academy training or education may be required for law enforcement jobs.

Police Officer Job Training
Newly hired police officers go through an extensive training period. Recruits are usually trained at a police academy for approximately three months. Police academy training includes classroom instruction on topics such as state and city laws, legal processes, and accident or crime investigation. Police officer recruits also receive hands-on training in traffic control, weapons use, first aid, and emergency response. Aspiring police officers must pass written and physical exams within the training academy before becoming eligible to serve. Police training programs are physically intensive, and written exams are comprehensive, designed to test how well the candidates have understood the curriculum. Final scores are a major factor in the hiring process. Although simply passing an exam might be acceptable, scoring above the rest of the cadets is what may make or break your future career as a police officer. After police training academy, officers are generally assigned to a senior officer for an on-the-job training and mentoring period, during which junior officers will learn how to apply their training in real-life scenarios.

Newly hired police officers go through an extensive training period. Other Helpful Skills and Experience
A desire to learn, a willingness to listen and to ask questions, and respect for authority are all important to a successful career as a police officer. In addition, officers must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, must have empathy toward others, and must possess sound judgment. Candidates with previous military or law enforcement experience and those who are bilingual or multilingual often have an advantage when it comes to hiring.
Police Officer Career Path
Police departments in most major metro areas require officers to gain experience working in patrol before they become eligible for transfer to specialized law enforcement positions. However, once these experience requirements are met, officers have a wide range of opportunities. These include positions such as detective, mounted officer, SWAT, and other focused units, depending on the size and needs of a given police department. Career police officers may also choose to seek promotion to the supervisory ranks. First-line supervisors of police and detectives include sergeants, lieutenants, and captains. These supervisors are responsible for shift scheduling, training staff, and supervising and coordinating investigations while ensuring proper procedures are being followed. In most police departments, officers must meet experience requirements (three to five years is common) to become eligible to take a competitive promotional exam. An officer’s score on a promotional exam determines, in part, how soon he or she will be promoted; those with higher scores tend to receive promotion first. An oral interview may also be part of the promotion process. This process is repeated for each promotion the candidate seeks: from officer to sergeant, from sergeant to lieutenant, and so on. After achieving the rank of captain, further promotions are typically based on appointment by department chiefs rather than by examination. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nationally, first-line supervisors of police and detectives make an annual average salary of $85,810.1 Approximately 19% of first-line police supervisors have at least some college credit, while 19% have an associate’s degree.
