HOW WOMEN ARE WORKING TO CLOSE THE STEM GENDER GAP CAREERS IN FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

eoejournal Editorial Comment

few years ago, a friend posted on Facebook that she would be working for the county elections office and that they needed just one more person to work on election day at the local vote center. Being the "helper" person that I am, I contacted her and said, "I'll do it!" Little did I know that it's not just the one 15-hour day that I was signing up for. There is online training and in-person training and a pre-election meeting and then the actual voting day. But I had committed, and I was proud to be participating in what I consider to be an important process. From my research, it seems only 72% of the population who are eligible have registered to vote. And just a little over 55% of those registered voters turned up for the presidental election in 2016. Compare that percentage to other countries and the number is really low. Chile, Austria and Belgium, for example, have had over 90% voter turn out since 1960. I've worked at the vote center for every election since that first time. And at the primaries in August I was reminded why I continue to do it. Late in the day a woman entered the voting area, excited and wide-eyed. I guessed her to be in her early 30s and of hispanic descent. She approached the check-in table where she was asked for her identification. Providing it, she said, with a huge grin, "This is my first time voting! Do I have to pay?" My response? "No, ma'am, you don't have to pay. Voting is your right and a privilege. Thank you for being here."

The gap has closed in education as well, as 34% of women are likely to have earned a bachelor’s degree by age 29, compared to 26% of males. bout seventy years ago, “computers” were not used as a term for the amazing devices we know today, but as a term for the people who would use them. From the beginning, these people were women. Jean Jennings Bartik, for example, worked on rocket and cannon trajectory calculations by hand. Bartik and other women also initially worked on the first version of what we recognize as a computer, the ENIAC. From Bartik, to Grace Hopper, Adele Goldberg and more, women were a major part of groundbreaking developments in computing.

While gender stereotypes are beginning to fade, the kind of systemic change that will see many women in science and math jobs takes time.

they want, and just because it is hard doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it.” A systemic change like this one requires working with girls from an early age. Giving them toys that encourage all learning, and books that outline female heroes in all occupations are some ways to reinforce their intelligence and growth in STEM skills. “We need to have a presence in the media and in our local communities. As women, we need to show young girls that STEM careers are exciting and fun,” "As Carpenter said. “We need to volunteer at local boys and girls clubs that to encourage the younger female generation to embrace their scientific self. I know the task seems daunting, but if we all encourage one young female in our lives, we could create a fire of young females entering these fields.”

Institute a Metrics-Driven System

In the workplace, management should work to create a way to recognize bias and stop it before it becomes an issue. In a UC study, researchers suggest using a model of organizational change called “Metrics-Driven Bias Interrupters,” which involves four steps: 1. Assess: Research how bias has a role in the organization’s hiring process. Is bias a factor in salary, or in assigned responsibility? Set up metrics to measure. 2. Implement a Bias Interrupter: Change procedures if necessary–this may involve using a mentor, or making sure women have equal responsibilities as their male counterparts.

November 2018

3. Measure: Look at the metrics set up and see if they have managed to address the bias. 4. Ratchet Up if Necessary: If the metric isn’t indicating an improvement, then take steps to make sure it does. A metric-driven initiative will help to create an efficient response to any issues, as data-driven decisions generally get more buy-in from upper management.

This is a problem for business to actively address,” said GE Chief Economist Marco Annunziata in a statement. If businesses can implement new strategies and metrics to work on eliminating gender bias, then GDP could increase by as much as 10%by 2030, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. MIT researchers found that a shift in gender could drive a revenue women, we need to show young girls increase of 41%. Engineers Make a World of Difference

CREATE A CAREER THAT MATTERS

America’s natural gas industry is growing fast. With new technologies and new products it’s leading the charge to a cleaner, greener future. We’re PGW – the country’s biggest municipal natural gas company – and we’re building a better energy economy for all. Our award-winning teams are engaged, determined, and rewarded.

magine having both the passion to make a difference in the world and the technical know-how to achieve it—that’s what engineering is all about.

Engineers are at the center of innovation, from increasing a person’s life expectancy and quality of life to creating and improving the communication systems that keep us all connected. Engineers’ work drives our economy and many experts predict that America needs to produce more engineers in order to stay competitive in the global marketplace and meet future demand. Engineering is a versatile degree. More than half of the people who have an engineering degree work in other areas like medicine, law, investment banking, and consulting, prompting many experts to call engineering the new liberal arts degree.

Engineers are at the center of innovation, from increasing a person’s life expectancy and quality of life to creating and improving the communication systems that keep us all connected.

Make today the day you make your move to PGW.

Average Salary The average engineer’s salary in 2015 ranged from $88,000 to $115,000 depending on the discipline of engineering. Entry level engineers—those who have just graduated from college—averaged between $56,000 and $69,000 annual salary. And it doesn't stop there. Over the course of a lifetime, engineering majors will earn 1.4 million dollars more than a liberal arts major. Of course, average income for engineers varies depending on discipline, qualifications, experience, and location. Check out Career Options and learn about the various engineering disciplines.

Hiring Trends

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics the field of engineering is expected to grow as much as 10 percent in the coming decade. In recent years, the prospects for college graduates have been fair at best, but engineering graduates experience a much more favorable job market. Why? Experts say demand for engineers will continue to grow as governments and industry work to meet the challenges of a growing global population and dwindling resources. Train as a Park Ranger Through SLETP

very year millions of people come to America's national parks to see famous landmarks and enjoy the wildlife. Most of these visitors come during the warm months causing a human population explosion in some of the more popular parks. In order to make sure everyone remains safe and has a good time, the National Park Service hires around 10,000 seasonal workers. Many of those will be park ranger jobs.

What does a park ranger do?

Although park rangers are considered as law enforcement agents, they are unique in the way that they interact with the public that they vow to protect and serve. A park ranger is a guide, an educator, and an ambassador as well as a policeman. The range of skills and knowledge that he must possess is different from that of most officers. For example, a park ranger can act as a guide, conducting walks and giving talks about environmental protection, safety, and park resources. He is expected to ensure friendly compliance with park rules by demonstrating the correct way to build a campfire or explaining the importance of staying on trails. A ranger may also be called upon to conduct search and rescue operations or to help combat forest fires. But, like any other law enforcement agent, he is also authorized to carry firearms, make arrests, gather evidence and execute warrants.

My ambition is to be myself and be heard. Synchrony is more than a workplace—we’re a working forward place. A place that helps fulfill ambitions. A place where you’ll ensure customers succeed and we’ll do the same for you: through an extensive Diversity & Inclusion Network, leaders who believe differences are a competitive advantage, and a culture that celebrates you. Because we know you have goals of your own. And we’re here to help you achieve them.

Our Seven Diversity & Inclusion Networks:

What is SLETP?

Since a park ranger is expected to possess a unique set of skills, even temporary employees must undergo a special training program designed just for this job. The National Park Service set up the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) in 1977 to ensure that talented, trained applicants are available when they are needed. Several colleges around the nation offer this training. The core program as developed by the NPS requires 334 class hours. However, many schools conduct academies that offer more class hours so that students will not only be SLETP certified at the end of the course but also will be eligible for state or local law enforcement jobs. Students are responsible for paying the tuition at most of these training sites.

ALTOGETHER BETTER

What are you working forward to? Engage with us at syfcareers.com

Will the NPS pay for my training?

Scholarships are available through the NPS ProRanger program. At the end of the second summer of this academic and internship program, the cadet will be sent to the NPS Law Enforcement Academy at Alamo College in Texas where he will receive his SLETP training. Opportunities abound for people interested in working as park rangers. The SLETP program has given them a structured way to begin their journey toward a career in this country's most scenic territories. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

National Disability Employment Awareness Month 2018

This Year's Theme: “America’s Workforce: Empowering All” Ideas for Employers and Employees

Activities conducted by individual employers and their employees are an important part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The ideas below are just a few ways they can participate, during the month of October, and all year long. For additional inspiration, check out Beyond NDEAM: Year-Round Employer Strategies for Advancing Disability Inclusion. Review policies — NDEAM is an opportune time to review your company's policies to ensure they convey a commitment to an inclusive workplace culture. For assistance in doing so, read Business Strategies that Work: A Framework for Disability Inclusion (see in particular the first section, "Lead the Way: Inclusive Business Culture"). Establish an ERG — NDEAM is a perfect time to launch a disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). Sometimes referred to as Employee Networks or Affinity Groups, ERGs offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests. For more information, see A Toolkit for Establishing and Maintaining Successful Employee Resource Groups. If your company already has a disability ERG, consider using NDEAM to remind employees about it through displays, information tables or other communication channels. Create a display — NDEAM is a great time to freshen up bulletin boards in break areas or other locations that employees frequent by posting positive messages about your company's commitment to a disability inclusive workforce. Start by putting up this year's NDEAM poster, which is available in both English and Spanish. Additional display materials include the "What Can YOU Do?" poster series. Train supervisors — Supervisors are the individuals closest to an organization's workforce. As part of NDEAM, consider conducting training to ensure they understand their role in fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Such training may include a review of relevant policies, including the process for providing reasonable accommodations. One easy way to provide such training is to make use of available "turn-key" training modules and available materials, such as the Building an Inclusive Workforce tabletop desk guide.

Educate employees — It is critical that companies committed to disability inclusion effectively and regularly reinforce that commitment to employees. NDEAM offers an opportunity to do this through disability training or informal educational events such as brown-bag lunch discussions. Several ready-touse resources can assist in facilitating such activities, such as disability etiquette materials and the "I Can" public service announcement and accompanying workplace discussion guide. Another option is to contact local disability organizations to see if they offer workplace training programs. Publish articles — NDEAM offers timely and fresh content for an employee newsletter or internal website. Articles could address a range of topics, such as general information about the company's commitment to an inclusive workplace, the process for requesting reasonable accommodations, or perhaps recognizing the contributions of employees with disabilities — either in general or on an individual level. Alternatively, or in addition, your company's top executive could issue a message to all employees recognizing NDEAM. Feature NDEAM in social media activities — Likewise, NDEAM provides an interesting hook for social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. For the latter, organizations are encouraged to include the hashtag #NDEAM. Sample postings and tweets are available to assist in incorporating NDEAM into social media activities. Issue an NDEAM press release — Employers can also issue a press release to local media to announce their involvement in NDEAM. To assist, a "fill-in-the-blank" template is available that organizations can quickly customize and pitch to their local media. Participate in Disability Mentoring Day — Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for youth with disabilities through hands-on programs, job shadowing and ongoing mentoring. The nationwide observance is the third Wednesday of each October, but companies may choose to host their own events on any day of the month (or year for that matter). The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) offers information to assist in implementing a Disability Mentoring Day event. Article provided by www.dol.gov

pon military retirement or separation, veterans are suddenly faced with not only the question of “what next?” but “where?” and “with who?” Apprenticeship programs for veterans offer a unique career path. An apprenticeship or on-the-job (OTJ) training program is an effective way for veterans to use their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit. These programs allow veterans to learn a trade rather than going through a formal education system. A veteran will enter into a free paid apprenticeship training program for a stated period of time. At the end of the training period, the veteran is granted job certification or achieves journeyman status.

salary increasing every six months. By the last month of training, the wage paid by the company must be at least 85% of that paid to a full-time employee of that same position. Veterans can also use their GI Bill benefit to receive tax-free benefits. As the competition for qualified veteran talent grows more fierce, apprenticeship programs offer employers a unique advantage. By being able to recruit virtually any veteran who wants to enter the workforce, the talent pool from which approved companies can recruit is greater than those that require specific degrees or experience for their positions.

the Guard/Reserve, may use their GI Bill benefit to participate in an apprenticeship or OTJ training program. These programs serve as an effective way to prepare for a career while earning a salary. While veterans are participating in their apprenticeship program, the VA will provide a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) based on how long the training will last. The company will also pay the veteran a salary (which initially must be at least 50% of the journeyman wage) throughout the course of their training. Take a look at the full breakdown of the benefit scale for your GI Bill.

Employers wishing to become approved must first contact their State Approving Agency. Companies are also able to benefit from the GI Bill Apprenticeship Credit program by tapping into the veteran talent pool to stock their prospect pipelines. By training veterans to do specific jobs in-house, companies can be comfortable hiring those veterans as full-time employees at the conclusion of their training period. To learn more about the GI Bill approved Apprenticeship and On-The-Job Training Programs, head over to the VA website. PROTECTING AMERICA: Careers in Federal Law Enforcement

ederal law enforcement is an exciting field with promising opportunities. Like local and state law enforcement professionals, those in federal law enforcement investigate crime and protect U.S. citizens — but on an entirely different level. Tasked with taking down drug organizations, investigating terrorism, protecting borders and cracking down on cyber crime, federal law enforcement is a job like no other. Law enforcement stakes are much higher at the federal level, and that means a better career with higher pay and more opportunities. However, it also means you’ll have to work harder and prove that you’re capable of meeting the exceptional challenges that come with a career in federal law enforcement. Federal agencies expect the best, and they demand it, accepting only the candidates that can demonstrate a background of excellent education, a clean record, and good health. If you’ve ever dreamed of working for the FBI, DEA, ATF, or border patrol, federal law enforcement is a path you should consider — but you’ll need to prove that you have what it takes.

often makes a home visit to explain the hospice philosophy and to answer questions. The team member may enroll the patient at home, and a hospice physician certifies eligibility to complete the process. Other members of the hospice team, such as a registered nurse and a volunteer coordinator, visit to assess the patient’s and family’s needs and to prepare a treatment plan. Hospice enrollment is voluntary and flexible, and, if the hospice physician confirms that a patient’s prognosis is 6 months or less, the patient may enroll. Patients who outlive their prognosis may be recertified for as long as they continue to meet program requirements. “If a disease runs its normal course, it’s 2 or 3 or 6 months,” says hospice volunteer coordinator Ilene Kotajarvi of Escanaba, Michigan. “But you never know. We’ve had people who’ve lived for a couple of years.”

Support and Treatment

A large component of hospice treatment is palliative care, which focuses on relief from pain and other symptoms of serious illness. But the hospice team also addresses a patient’s nonmedical needs, such as managing the stress of end-of-life decision making. Hospice workers also help family members cope with their loved one’s dying and death. Although there are inpatient facilities, hospice providers most often offer home care; some have both facilities and home care. The number and duration of visits from hospice team members, whether at home or in a facility, may increase or decrease as the patient’s condition changes. Family members’ involvement is encouraged

at all stages of hospice care. Unless a patient is incapacitated, however, the family does not make decisions about treatment. “As long as the person is alert and oriented, we respect the dignity of our patient,” says Chuck Wilcox, a hospice social worker in Peoria, Illinois. “We ask the patient, ‘What do you want to do?’ During a difficult time, this gives the person a sense of choice.”

Increasing Awareness

Enrollment in hospice programs has risen steadily over the past two decades. According to the National Hospice and “As long as the person is alert Palliative Care Organization, the number and oriented, we respect the dignity of people who received hospice services between 1990 and 2013 increased more of our patient.” than 7 times, from 210,000 to over 1.5 million. Rewards and Challenges of Hospice Work

Knowing that patients are nearly certain to die in your care may be a difficult part of hospice work. But these workers say they are drawn to helping others, and that provides job satisfaction.

Rewards

Some hospice workers find their jobs rewarding for the same reasons they would in any industry. For example, a director or supervisor may feel gratified through staff achievements. “My role is to help my staff feel successful,” says Allen, “and success means when the patients are comfortable, their symptoms are managed, and the family feels supported.” For other workers, job satisfaction may be more specific to endof-life care. “Working in hospice absolutely mirrors the reasons I got into social work,” Wilcox says. “I can truly make a difference in people’s lives. A good day might be when someone quietly says, ‘Thank you.’” People often choose these careers because they enjoy helping others and find hospice work as fulfilling as they’d hoped it would be. “The reward is the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve been able to help people at a time in their lives when they’re very vulnerable and scared,” says Kotajarvi. “It’s such a positive experience.” Another advantage of these occupations, workers say, is creating bonds with the people they support. “I love my job,” Latta says. “We not only treat the patient, we treat families. You build some unbelievable relationships.”

Hospice providers need workers in management, business and financial operations, and administrative support occupations to ensure that their organization offers reliable, cost-effective services and complies with government regulations. have many government regulations that workers must follow. Keeping up with changes in the law may be difficult enough, but the rules sometimes leave workers feeling helpless. “The challenge is to be able to meet the needs of patients and their families,” says Kotajarvi, “especially when there are times that the law doesn’t allow it,” such as when personal care aides—who may not administer medication—cannot relieve a patient’s discomfort. And even as hospice workers enjoy building relationships with patients and families, they acknowledge the drawbacks of getting close in these circumstances. “You do get attached,” says Latta. “It’s hard on the heart, hard on the soul.” In some ways, the longer a relationship continues, the more stressful it may be for hospice workers. When a patient lives beyond his or her prognosis, for example, families may lose sight of the fact that the illness is terminal—and it’s the hospice workers’ job to remind them. “It’s hard having to be the one to say, ‘We’re here’ when the decline inevitably begins,” says Latta. “I see it as a positive: the long struggle for the patient is coming to an end. But it’s almost like the families forget what it means to be in hospice.” Such challenges pale in comparison with the overall satisfaction of a hospice career, say

workers. “People see a negative in working in hospice because all you do is work with dying people,” says Allen. “It’s not that it’s easy to work with dying people, but you know that your patient never felt deserted and that there was someone there to be his advocate. You know your patient was comforted by the fact that his loved ones were going to be supported even after he’s gone. It’s rewarding.”

Preparing for a hospice career

Workers enter hospice careers from different backgrounds. Some people move into hospice seeking a change in occupational or career focus. Others decide on hospice work because of firsthand experience with its services, such as through a family member. Regardless of their path to hospice, prospective workers typically need some education, training, or experience to enter these occupations. Hospice providers may offer additional training to employees who are new to end-oflife care. At nearly all levels of education, hospice workers need certain skills to be successful at their jobs. Other qualifications may be recommended or required, depending on the occupation. Skills. Hospice workers should be compassionate but able to create emotional boundaries

November 2018 with patients and their families. They also must be organized, responsible, and self-motivated, says Allen, especially if they make home visits. “In a facility, someone is always overseeing your work,” she says. “But when you’re out in the community, there’s no way you can be micromanaged.” Communication skills are critical for these workers. For example, hospice workers must be able to explain medical concepts—including some that may be confusing or even frightening—to families as well as patients. Hospice workers also need to collaborate with other members of the hospice team. And, depending on the occupation, they may have to write reports or make presentations to the community. In addition, the task of having meaningful end-of-life discussions sometimes falls to hospice workers. “Every day, we have those very hard conversations with people,” Wilcox says. “We’re going to tell you the truth, even if no one else has.” Another important element of hospice work is making sure that patients and their families feel supported. “Part of good communication skills is the ability to listen,” says Kotajarvi, “to hear their stories, not tell yours.” And hospice workers need to have integrity

and to be confident in their abilities, says Allen: “You are the patient’s and family’s connection to healthcare, and they need to be able to trust you.” Education. Many occupations typically require a bachelor’s degree or more education for entry-level jobs. Students interested in hospice work can take classes in high school to help them prepare. For example, workers in healthcare occupations often study life and physical sciences, such as biology and chemistry. Community, personal, and social service workers usually learn topics such as human behavior and psychology. Management, business, and administrative workers need to know information systems and economics. In addition to taking required subjects, hospice workers recommend studying marketing (helpful for community outreach) and developing networking skills (to connect patients and their families with local resources). And, of course, it’s essential to hone interpersonal, oral, and written communication abilities for nearly every aspect of hospice work. Other qualifications. Some hospice occupations typically involve on-the-job training to attain competency. Others require both a degree and training; for example, dietitians must complete a bachelor's degree and an internship to become fully qualified. Workers in some occupations need licensure or certification in order to work in hospice care. For example, every state requires medical and health services managers of hospice facilities to be licensed, and hospice aides must have a minimum level of training and pass a competency evaluation or get certification, depending on the state. Physicians, nurses, and therapists are among the other occupations that require licensure, certification, or both. Optional certification in hospice and palliative care is available from professional organizations. For example, the National Association of Social Workers offers certification for licensed social workers who have taken continuing education courses in hospice and palliative care and have at least 3 years of supervised experience in those fields.

Experience

Only one occupation—financial managers—typically requires work experience in a related occupation for entry. But prospective hospice workers can learn a lot through experience, even if it’s not required. “With students, I tell them that getting experience is something they’ll never be sorry about,” says Allen. “Variety is to their benefit.” One way to get hands-on experience in hospice work is to volunteer with a provider. “Through volunteering, you can learn so much,” says Kotajarvi. “You have one-on-one contact with people. It’s a good learning tool.” Hospice volunteers might prepare meals for patients or offer respite for caregivers, for example. Volunteers usually receive formal training from the hospice provider before visiting patients. Some hospices allow high school students to volunteer informally, such as doing administrative tasks, but these volunteers usually do not work directly with patients. Another way to get a feel for hospice careers is to talk to workers or shadow them for a few days. Learning what it’s like to work with patients and their families is especially valuable if you’re not sure whether hospice is right for you. Ideally, you should observe workers both on home visits and in an inpatient facility. Although workers may have more autonomy on home visits than in a facility, they usually see patients and their families more often in a facility and build deeper relationships as a result. Required travel for home visits can be physically exhausting, and the closeness created with patients and families in a facility can be emotionally draining.

Page 21

Communication skills are critical for these workers. For example, hospice workers must be able to explain medical concepts—including some that may be confusing or even frightening—to families as well as patients. Experiential learning in hospice care may help you to solidify career plans. “If you’re someone who wants to help people and wants to be in the medical field, hospice gives you a chance to do both,” says Latta. “I’m a nurse, but I’m also kind of a therapist. I’m working with families and guiding them through a very difficult time. It’s a very rewarding career.”

Interview with Teacher of the Deaf, Lisa Hahn, of Denver,Colorado by Kathleen Green

What do you do?

I’m a teacher in a charter school for deaf and hard-ofhearing students, from 3 years old through high school. I use American Sign Language (ASL) as the direct language of instruction. Specific to my school, I’m a reading specialist tasked with helping students develop literacy skills.

How do you vary your instruction to students across such a broad age range?

I spent a semester student teaching at the New Mexico School for the Deaf. In between earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, I taught special ed in the Peace Corps. I went on a lot of home visits, which involved developing relationships with students and their families.

What skills are important for teachers of the deaf?

If you’re going to work in a setting like mine, you need to have native or near-native fluency in ASL. I’m not a deaf person, so I needed to become fluent in ASL as a second language to be able to use it in teaching. You also need to be tech savvy, because we use a lot of technology You’ve got to be able to multitask and be super organized, because you have to keep a lot of data on your kids. And you have in the classroom. We’re heavy on visuals like photos and movies, so to be observant of your students’ development, which doesn’t being able to edit and create small always happen right in front of you. videos is a necessary skill.

With early childhood and elementary school students, I sometimes teach one-on-one or in small groups. We might do vocabulary-building activities, like puzzles or matching, to work on recognizing sight words or high-frequency words. With some of the older elementary students, we might read passages or sentences in books to focus on figurative language, like metaphors and idioms. The goal is to increase their reading-comprehension skills in English. With middle school and high school students, I support the teachers in developing lessons to meet their students’ varied needs. I help teachers group the kids on the basis of the communication strengths and weaknesses of each student. This year, I’ll also be doing some preteaching of concepts to help students get ready for when the teacher covers specific content.

Besides working directly with students, what other duties do you have?

I’m kind of responsible for our library: for the collection of books, organizing the early childhood and picture books, setting things up so that teachers can find them. For outreach, I’m working with our public library to get more current books and promoting a literacy night to families and the community. I’ve got an author coming from Gallaudet [university for deaf and hard-of-hearing students], and in other years we’ve brought in a deaf illustrator and deaf author. I have lots of paperwork, because all of the kids in my school have an IEP [Individualized Education Program, a written plan identifying support services that students need]. Some of those IEPs include reading goals, and I need to write progress reports for my caseload. I also lead or am heavily involved in professional development activities, like mentoring or workshops, within my school that are related to reading or literacy. And I attend events like parent–teacher conferences, backto-school night, and registration.

Tell me a little about your background.

Growing up, I saw sign language being used everywhere; that definitely sparked my curiosity. My bachelor’s degree is in psychology, and I have a master’s degree [in deaf education] from Gallaudet. My master’s was a 2-year program that included a practicum and an internship, and

What qualities do teachers need in general?

You have to be a people person: You have to be able to work in a school as part of a team and with families, with kids. You’ve got to be able to multitask and be super organized, because you have to keep a lot of data on your kids. And you have to be observant of your students’ development, which doesn’t always happen right in front of you. I make a lot of anecdotal records about things I notice informally and write down later. You shouldn’t expect to sit in a chair all day. I’m walking around the school to visit different classrooms, and, with the early childhood group, there’s a lot of sitting on the floor, squatting, and running after kids.

What advice would you give prospective teachers of the deaf?

If you want to work in a setting like mine, you need to understand the Deaf community and get involved in it. You also have to understand language development and ASL. But it’s also important to be really open minded, because there are so many different philosophies of deaf education. Whenever I come across professionals who are entrenched in one viewpoint, it makes me realize how critical it is to be willing to consider other perspectives.

What’s the worst part of your job?

Keeping up with the paperwork and other progress reports.

What’s best about your job?

Watching the kids make progress, and seeing when students discover they can read on their own—having that little "lightbulb" go on. It’s fascinating watching them develop language and preliteracy skills, like drawing out hand signs and making letterlike marks.

Any career highlights so far?

"It's important to be really open minded, because there are so many different philosophies of deaf education. Whenever I come across professionals who are entrenched in one viewpoint, it makes me realize how critical it is to be willing to consider other perspectives."

I was the first teacher hired at this charter school, back when it was only early childhood and kindergarten through second grade. Twenty years later, we’re still here. Now we go all the way through high school, and we’ve made a name for ourselves. I’m really proud of that. Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Jobs for the Future

Diversity & Inclusion West Coast CONFERENCE

December 10 – 11, 2018 Wells Fargo Learning & Event Center San Francisco, CA

Respecting Differences and Standing on Common Ground As with 2017 Diversity and Inclusion is currently much in the news – from the continued litigation of immigration bans, #METOO, the Starbucks arrests, the Mexican Caravan, the entrance of Generation Z into the workforce. One side effect of all this controversy is a widespread public commitment to D&I by major employers with an emphasis on the business value of diversity. Building on over 20 years of experience at Board in advancing D&I in organizations, this event looks to the future as it examines and explores the practices that have proven successful in promoting greater diversity and fostering inclusion in a range of organizations.

ccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in December 2017, the manufacturing sector added approximately 25,000 new jobs. Most of those jobs were in machinery, computer and electronics products, and fabricated metal products. According to experts, manufacturing will continue to develop by making more use of advanced automation, robotics, blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT). That means that there’s not only a growing number of manufacturing jobs that need to be filled; there are also many roles that require skills and experience with new technologies. So let’s take a look at three of the most cutting-edge manufacturing jobs that need to be filled. Just be prepared to check any outdated assumptions about manufacturing at the entrance to the manufacturing floor, because today’s manufacturing jobs often offer technical training, advancement, and a whole host of automation-related opportunities you can proudly list on your résumé!

Supply Chain Engineer

A supply chain engineer analyzes the production chain and develops processes in order to optimize the supply chain. When a new products is introduced, he or she is responsible for the design and implementation of a new supply chain for it. In a digital factory, this can involve integrating the supply chain with the IoT and blockchain. On average, a supply chain engineer earns approximately $80,000 per year.

User Experience Architect

A user experience (UX) architect ensures that user-centric design methodology is optimized for both existing and new products. This involves analyzing the customer experience and translating the findings into actionable guidelines for teams. In addition, a UX architect has to stay abreast with production innovation in order to be able to recommend product improvements. The average salary of a UX architect is $99,800 per year.

Digital Manufacturing Engineer

Register at www.conferenceboard.org/inclusion and use code EOE300 to save $300!

A digital manufacturing engineer designs and/or enhances manufacturing systems. He or she focuses not only on the mechanical component of the system, but also on the electrical and software components. In a digital factory, this can involve sensors and smart equipment that are connected to the IoT, as well as data analytics to improve quality and productivity. According to Glassdoor, a digital manufacturing engineer earns an average of $71,679 annually. Are you ready to join the more than 12.5 million people working in the manufacturing sector? here are certain qualities that every employer wants to see in a potential job candidate. As a job seeker, it's your responsibility to understand what these qualities are and to add them to your skill set, as well as convey these qualities to your interviewer in a way that is genuine. Here are a few of the most sought-after qualities that employers are looking for today. An Understanding Of Business

Organizational structures within many companies today are more inclusive of the opinions of non-managers than ever before. This means that employers are looking for people who have a knowledge of the business they work for that extends beyond their current job description. Before going into an interview, learn as much as possible about the business you're trying to work for. You can use this knowledge to better answer questions regarding how you could be an asset to the business as a whole.

Knowing How To Analyze Data

Data analytics only continues to become more important to businesses of all sizes. As an employee in the modern business world, it's vital that you can be presented with data, understand it and then use it to make decisions that will benefit your employer. As technology inevitably advances, and as a result, the gathering of all types of data increases, your data analytics skills will be highly valuable to the employers you want to work for.

Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating a corporate culture which promotes integrity as a fundamental basis for all decisions by its employees and those with whom the company deals. To find out about employee opportunities, please visit:

Eager To Learn

The various technologies used by the business you want to work for are evolving all the time. These changes require skilled workers who can adapt quickly and learn how to utilize new technologies in order to improve current practices. By showing an eagerness to learn and be trained on new technologies, you can dramatically increase your value in the eyes of potential employers.

Tosoh Bioscience, Inc. (TBI) provides highly sophisticated diagnostic systems to doctor’s offices, hospitals and reference laboratories.

Creative Problem Solving

No matter how efficient a business is, problems will still arise from time to time. Because of this, people with proven problem-solving skills see better results in today's job market. Go into each of your job interviews prepared with detailed examples of how you've had to face problems in the past and come up with solutions that work to solve them. These are just a few of the most important qualities that employers look for in a new hire. By understanding data analytics, showing an eagerness to learn, being a proven problem solver and having a deep understanding of modern business practices, you'll give yourself the best possible chance of getting the job of your dreams. ealthcare social workers provide support to patients dealing with chronic, serious or terminal illness, or who are temporarily disabled. They also work with the families of these patients. If this sounds like an interesting career, you'll be glad to hear that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts fast job growth for all social workers through at least 2026.

Occupation Overview

As a healthcare social worker, you would help clients who are dealing with illnesses such as chronic kidney failure, multiple sclerosis, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. You might focus on the needs of senior citizens. Healthcare social workers evaluate various types of services and provide information and advice on these options for patients and their families. They also arrange for clients to participate in programs such as home meal delivery.

Places of Employment

The largest number of healthcare social workers are employed in general medical and surgical hospitals, reports the BLS. These hospitals provide diagnostic services and medical treatment for patients with a wide range of health conditions. Additional job possibilities for healthcare social workers include employment with family services and other government agencies, community health centers, home healthcare providers, long-term care facilities, assisted living centers and outpatient clinics. Some find employment in specialty hospitals that

focus on inpatients with a particular type of medical disorder. This includes hospitals that provide long-term care but are not nursing care facilities, such as rehabilitation hospitals for patients who have become temporarily physically disabled.

Salaries

Hospitals generally pay a healthcare social worker more than he or she would make in other employment settings. Healthcare social workers employed by general medical hospitals had an average salary of about $30 per hour as of 2017, or about $62,000 per year, according to the BLS. The average annual salary for all healthcare social workers as of 2017 was approximately $56,800. That's around a 14-percent increase from the yearly salary in 2010, which was about $49,000.

Getting Started

To obtain a position as a healthcare social worker, you typically must have a master's degree in the field or in a relevant subject, such as psychology. Some entry-level positions are available for applicants with a bachelor's degree. Licensing and certification requirements vary by state. To get started, search for colleges and universities offering four-year degrees in social work. Another option would be majoring in a social science field like psychology and sociology. This would qualify you for a master's program in social work after completing the bachelor's degree. Article provided by Constant-Content.com
