"E

verything in moderation," my father said, sitting in his chair behind his desk, raising a glass and sipping at the three fingers of a single malt whiskey he poured only on special occasions. It was both the second and the last time I witnessed this ritual. I had just graduated from college and I was debating on which job offer to accept. He was proud, and I was happy to be the source of his pride. My father lived every day by the "everything in moderation" rule and though I respected him for it, I also wished he would have pushed the boundaries on occasion and really let loose. I'm pretty sure there are things he would have liked to do before he passed, if that moderation motto hadn't been holding him back. Or is that just my perception? The thing is, I'm also pretty sure he lived his life exactly the way he wanted. He worked hard and made a good living, went to church every Sunday, and he traveled all around the world. So who am I to judge someone else's life choices, whether moderate or extreme? And for that matter who is anyone else to judge yours or mine? Today's advice? You do you. Don't let other people decide your path for you. We each only have one life. Live yours the way that works best for you.

Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Vietnam. In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday. It’s celebrated on the third Saturday of every May and is exhibited by exercises, parades, and receptions that highlight and honor our amazing military and all of its strength. Since Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, many military installations are available for public viewing for those wishing to take part in the celebration or to learn more about our country’s military. Some other ways to celebrate the special occasion include wearing red, white and blue; flying the American Flag, talking with or writing to a military member, donating to military-based organizations, or sending care packages for those serving overseas. The importance of this day should always be evident. It is a day that our military members rightly deserve and it’s essential that we celebrate it accordingly. An excerpt taken from an article written in the New York Post on May 17, 1952, sums up Armed Forces Day’s utmost importance, “It is our most earnest hope that those who are in positions of peril, that those who have made exceptional sacrifices, yes, and those who are afflicted with plain drudgery and boredom, may somehow know that we hold them in exceptional esteem. Perhaps if we are a little more conscious of our debt of honored affection they may be a little more aware of how much we think of them.” "Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace–many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth–that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice." – President John F. Kennedy, 1963 Article provide by www.militarybenefits.info

Page 7

Not sure how to honor military men and women this year? Take a look at these five ideas— 1. Bake a Special Treat

For any soldiers or veterans in your family or group of friends, one of the best ways to honor their service on Armed Forces Day is to simply spend some time together. So, invite them over for dinner or a backyard barbecue! If you want, show them you appreciate their service by baking a cake or a batch of cupcakes. You can decorate the baked goods with red, white and blue frosting or with a logo or design that represents their branch of the military. If you know anyone who is still serving overseas or out of state, these cupcakes also make for a great care package.

2. Honor With Flowers

If you’ve ever lost a friend or family member while he or she was serving in the military, you likely honor his or her memory every day in different ways. On Armed Forces Day, decorate his or her grave with a bouquet of yellow roses. Do whatever feels right to you to honor your beloved soldier, whether it’s writing a letter and leaving it at the grave, sharing memories with the friends or family members who came with you or simply holding a moment of silence.

3. Volunteer

Military men and women serve the country, so to honor them, you can help serve your

community. Spending time with veterans in retirement communities is a great way to honor Armed Forces Day, but you can also take part in any volunteer opportunity that helps other people or animals.

4. Find a Parade

Many communities have parades or other celebrations for Armed Forces Day in May, so do a quick search online to see if you can find one in your city or town. Also, there are often air shows happening during the month of May, and they’re a fun and exciting way to celebrate the U.S. military! Use the parade or air show as an opportunity to explain to your children why you’re celebrating and who you’re honoring on this holiday.

5. Decorate Your Porch

Finally, one of the easiest ways to show support for the troops in general is by decorating your front porch. Hang an American flag where it can be seen by passers by, and plant red, white and blue flowers (including roses, hydrangeas, carnations, chrysanthemums and daisies) in planters on your porch or front steps. These simple steps will show your support for the men and women serving the country. © 2019 - Teleflora Blog.

In

America, 40 percent of females are single-family heads of household. Women, who still make 78 cents to every man’s dollar, could earn an equal wage by getting in on some of the fastest growing, well-paying jobs of the future.

Where are these jobs? The renewable energy industry.

In 2017, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that energy sectors employed roughly 6.4 million Americans, up nearly five percent, or 300,000 jobs, from the prior year. Electric Power Generation and Fuels technologies comprised most hires at 1.9 million. Of those, about 374,000 hires work full- or part-time in the solar industry.

Solar sector leading the charge

In 2016, the solar industry added about 51,000 new jobs, half of which were filled by women. Women joining the industry as PV installers are earning equal pay for equal work; other entry-level solar jobs offer fast-tracks to more advanced positions, through a certification process that takes just five weeks to complete. Clean energy fields are placing more women in strong leadership roles, too. Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), said many of the association’s 1,000 partner-companies are consciously hiring more female engineers to establish a more balanced workforce. The renewables industry, Ross Hopper asserts, values brains over brawn. “Muscles are not the prerequisite,” she said. “Brains and work ethic are the prerequisites.”

Whether building large-scale solar arrays in the desert or hauling and installing residential rooftop panels, women are making their mark in the industry. There is always room for improvement, but Ross Hopper said women now represent 27 percent of the solar power workforce.

Join a dynamic team that encourages growth, diversity, opportunity and excellence. ICMA-RC is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. 777 North Capitol Street NE Washington, DC 20002 951 East Byrd Street Richmond, VA 23219

Whether building large-scale solar arrays in the desert or hauling and installing residential rooftop panels, women are making their mark in the industry. There is always room for improvement, but Ross Hopper said women now represent 27 percent of the solar power workforce. STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, is an essential area of study that can help women establish careers in the renewable energy industry. With more women pursuing degrees in STEM studies, their influence in the industry is poised to grow. Ross Hopper agreed, saying, “A lot of our companies work with organizations that are trying to get more women involved in construction because women are really good at multitasking. They are a sought-after commodity.”

May 2019

equal opportunity employment journal

Page 11

Different studies count solar jobs in different ways. For example, Ross Hopper said a recent Solar Foundation study count differs broadly from the popular employment numbers because it only counts hires that comprise at least half of their time on the job in solar. Regardless, the push to add more females to the solar workforce is evident.

Hope for the future

If all goes as expected, the government’s energy researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimate that renewables will supply most of America’s energy needs by 2050. So far, some early hurdles facing fair access to solar careers have already been knocked down. Ross Hopper said it’s important to note that women are making headway in areas that not so long ago were considered for men only. And because both male and female leaders are prioritizing diversity in the workforce, she knows the progress did not happen by accident. “We need to have people with different experiences at the table, making decisions,” she said. “We need to recognize women have particular skills in these areas and they are beneficial to our companies. I’m proud of the progress we’re making, and hope to continue to make more.”

CREATE A CAREER THAT MATTERS

Opportunities in wind energy

Wind power jobs also are picking up speed with 102,000 employees nationally, representing an increase of 32 percent from 2016. Leading the way for women in wind energy today is Kristen Graf, who recalls what it was like getting exposure to the industry while studying for her engineering degree. Now the executive director of Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy(WRISE) and a self-described math and science nerd, Graf loves being outdoors and working to preserve the environment. “I became obsessed with wind turbines, solar panels before I even saw one in person. I went to college totally wide-eyed and unaware,” said Graf, who described her studies and future career as a natural choice. During her time as an undergraduate, Graf said social isolation was probably the toughest part of her college experience. Her engineering class was only 20 percent women, which was actually considered high at that time. These days, data suggests that STEM fields are graduating closer to 50 percent women.

Women helping women up the clean energy ladder

However, there are still strides to be made in the retention of female talent in the renewables industry. Young women, Graf said, enter renewable energy fields excited to be there, but often leave prematurely. She said keeping women in the industry’s jobs is just as important as getting them there in the first place. “In college, I became active in the Society of Women Engineers, mainly because that’s where all the women are. I needed to talk to them,” Graf said. Entry level wind technology jobs often require an electrical background coupled with physical skill, because of the height and complexity of turbines. Still, Graf feels women sometimes have the advantage, since their generally smaller frames can better navigate tight spaces. “The women that I see out there love it, they’re great at it. Sometimes they’re even that much more comfortable getting up there and doing the work they have to do in those spaces,” she said. For women looking for a little less intensity in the workplace, renewable industries are also ripe with many adjacent careers, including administrative, legal and financial opportunities. WRISE is mainly wind-focused, but has expanded in recent years to broaden its scope to include new energy technologies, including solar and storage. Graf’s organization also sponsors fellowships that bring graduates to major national trade shows and conferences. In addition to covering transportation and lodging, the fellowships also give participants the chance to network with women in leadership roles across the renewable sectors. Despite today’s challenges, Graf’s advice for women interested in green energy careers is to stay fearless. It may be an uphill battle, but many female leaders at the top are reaching back to help the next generation. “Backbone, yes, but it’s a sense of your core self, [that] I’m here because I deserve to be here,” she said. “There are so many amazing women out there, and more women need to see them.” Article provided by www.chooseenergy.com Dianne Anderson covers education, health, and city government stories with an eye on legislative impacts to diverse communities. She has received awards from the American Cancer Society – Inland Empire, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Over the years, she has reported for the Long Beach Leader and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin and been a contributor to the Pasadena Weekly.

ith support from NIST, experts are developing tests to help identify people with the pattern-matching skills needed for analyzing fingerprints. Try your eye on a few of the questions below. Being a forensic examiner seems glamorous on TV. But working in a crime lab requires long hours of intense focus that are anything but action-packed. This is especially true for fingerprint examiners, who must focus on minute visual details that would leave most people cross-eyed. It’s not a job for everyone. Finding the right people to fill these jobs is critical because they help ensure that criminals are brought to justice and that innocent people are not wrongly accused. Especially as forensic science degree programs produce an increasing number of jobseekers, crime lab managers need tools to identify the most promising among them. Do you think you have the right mix of skills and temperament to be a high-performing fingerprint examiner? If so, read on, and take the interactive quiz below. The questions in that quiz were developed by experts, with support from NIST, to test visual pattern-matching abilities. As part of this effort, in the fall of 2016, NIST sponsored a Workshop on Personnel Selection in the Pattern Evidence Domain of Forensic Science. This workshop, which brought together forensic professionals, cognitive scientists and industrial psychologists, was hosted by the National Academy of Sciences Board on Human Systems Integration. “The goal is to identify individuals who are better at pattern recognition tasks than your average Joe,” said Melissa Taylor, a research manager at NIST who focuses on reducing the potential for errors and bias in forensic analysis. Taylor’s program is part of a larger NIST effort to strengthen forensic science in the United States. Currently, Taylor says, when lab managers fill entry-level positions, they base their hiring decisions on college transcripts, job interviews and writing samples. Those are important, but they don’t shed light on pattern-matching skills specifically. NIST does not administer tests to applicants, but hopes to provide lab managers with testing tools.

May 2019

Do You Have What it Takes to be a Forensic Fingerprint Examiner?

In addition to helping lab managers, such tests can also help aspiring forensic examiners know if the field is right for them. “If applicants only know about the job through television shows like “CSI,” they might not have a realistic picture of what’s involved,” Taylor said. Forensic science has come under increased scrutiny lately, most recently in a report from the President’s Council of Advisors for Science and Technology (PCAST). Among other things, the PCAST report called on research scientists to develop automated, computer-based methods that can efficiently and accurately analyze fingerprints and other pattern evidence. So, if the field is heading toward automation, why bother creating a test for human examiners? For one, it will take several years before scientists develop fully automated systems, and in the meantime, human examiners will be doing the work. In addition, fingerprints collected at crime scenes are often distorted, degraded, or have complicated backgrounds. “There will always be difficult cases that require human analysis,” Taylor said. “In the future, automated systems may be able to handle the straightforward comparisons, allowing human examiners to focus on the most complex cases.” The next step for this project, Taylor said, is to develop an online test with input from industrial and organizational psychologists. Getting Beyond the Charity Model: Tips for Recruiting Employees with Disabilities by Tammy Binford

Disability “seems like a forbidden word,” but employers shouldn’t shy away from it.

F

ew dispute research showing that a diverse workforce contributes to an employer’s success, but diversity efforts often don’t explore the benefits of recruiting people with disabilities. However, that’s beginning to change. “We have certainly seen a shift,” says Kristine Foss, managing director with Disability Solutions, the consulting division of the nonprofit Ability Beyond. In her work, she specializes in creating customized plans for companies to hire and retain people with disabilities. Foss says at one time, employers were more interested in the perceived risks of hiring someone with a disability, but employers are now beginning to think about the benefits people with disabilities can bring. Employees with a range of disabilities bring a different perspective and set of life experiences that can spur ideas for new indemand products and services from all kinds of clients and customers. In addition to breaking away from a focus on risk, Foss says employers are beginning to move

away from the “charity model,” in which efforts are centered on how to help someone with a disability find suitable employment instead of how an employee with a disability can benefit an employer. Keith Meadows, a hiring and engagement consultant with Disability Solutions who works with several Fortune 500 clients, says the charity model too often leads those involved in hiring to think of reasons a person with a disability might not be able to do the job, though that may not be the reality. It takes teaching Human Resources professionals and hiring managers to “flip that script and highlight the business value” of employees with disabilities. Foss says her organization stresses the importance of considering a diverse group of disabilities. Some potential employees will have physical disabilities, and others may include people with attention deficit disorder, veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder, people with autism, and those with mental health issues. All can bring valuable insights to a team.

How Veterans May Break into Healthcare IT by New England College

H

• Personal health records (PHRs) represent information compiled by patients, such as dietary habits, exercise and vital statistics like blood pressure, which a physician or provider can access online.

ealthcare information technology (IT) is a field that may appeal to veterans or servicemembers transitioning out of the military who’d like to play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients receive quality care. Healthcare IT enables providers to meet patients’ needs and improve services by fostering enhanced communication and access to medical records. There are three primary subsets: • E lectronic health records (EHRs) represent the national movement toward digitizing all patient records, which means physicians are no longer tied to paper files. If a patient has an overnight emergency, their primary care doctor can access the individual’s historical files from any location, whether at home or while on vacation, to share information with other providers in a matter of minutes.

Developing a vibrant online presence, through social media or the creation of a personal website, can highlight accomplishments and provide a deeper context for showing how a veteran’s military background has prepared him or her for a specific career.

• E-prescribing represents a turn from paper prescriptions, which can get lost or miscommunicated, to digital orders sent directly from a provider to a pharmacy. As more hospitals and healthcare facilities adopt federal requirements for converting paper patient files to digital records, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics* projects growth for healthcare positions such as medical records and health information technicians (13% through 2026). The Heart of Teaching:What it Means to Be a Great Teacher by Rusul Alrubail

hat does it mean to be a great teacher? Of course credentials, knowledge, critical thinking, and all other faculties of intelligence are important. However, a great teacher should be much more than credentials, experience and intelligence. What lies in the heart of a great teacher?

You are Kind

You are Positive

A great teacher shows kindness to students, colleagues, parents and those around her/him. My favourite saying is “kindness makes the world go around”. It truly changes the environment in the classroom and school. Being a kind teacher helps students feel welcomed, cared for and loved.

Being a positive person, is not an easy task. Being a positive teacher is even harder when we’re always met with problems with very limited solutions. However, staying positive when it’s tough can have such a tremendous positive impact on the students and everyone around us. Looking on the bright side always seems to help make things better.

You are Compassionate

Teaching is a very humanistic profession, and compassion is the utmost feeling of understanding, and showing others you are concerned about them. A compassionate teacher models that characteristic to the students with her/his actions, and as a result students will be more open to understanding the world around them.

You are Empathetic

Empathy is such an important trait to have and to try to develop in ourselves and our students. Being able to put yourself in someone’s shoes and see things from their perspective can have such a powerful impact on our decisions and actions.

Want to join our staff? We have an array of opportunities open.

www.fairlawnschools.org We stand in support of equality for and advancement of all people based on their qualifications and actions alone without regard to race, color, gender, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, protected veteran status or any other characteristics protected by law.

You are a Builder

A great teacher bridges gaps and builds relationships, friendships, and a community. Teachers always look to make things better and improve things in and outside of the classroom. Building a community is something a great teacher seeks to do in the classroom and extends that to the entire school and its community.

You Inspire

Everyone looks at a great teacher and they want to be a better teacher, they want to be a better student, even better, they want to be a better person. A great teacher uncovers hidden treasures, possibilities and magic right before everyone’s eyes.

Chemistry is a science that focuses on matter. There’s an abstract component to it, because a lot is based on atoms that are too tiny to see, but it’s a very hands-on subject as well. What do you do?

I’m a chemistry teacher at a public high school in suburban Philadelphia. I teach all levels of chemistry, from beginning to advanced. I have 4 class periods every day. Once a week, the students get a double period, which gives us time to do chemistry labs.

What do you enjoy about teaching high school chemistry?

Chemistry is a science that focuses on matter. There’s an abstract component to it, because a lot is based on atoms that are too tiny to see, but it’s a very hands-on subject as well. For example, you can draw conclusions about molecules reacting based on changes in color or heat, but you can never actually see what’s happening at the molecular level. High school is the age when abstract thinking is developing, so it’s exciting for me to see students start to grasp these concepts.

How do your students use the periodic table of elements?

The periodic table is arguably the most important tool a chemist uses. In my classes, we refer to it constantly. I introduce it on the first day of class, and we continue to use it throughout the year. I tell my students that the periodic table is like a smart phone. It holds so much information, but if you don’t spend time learning about it, you won’t know how it can work for you. There’s a bit of memorization involved, but after that, you’ll know about all the properties of elements within each group (vertical column on the periodic table). My favorite thing about the periodic table is that Dmitri Mendeleev, who is credited with coming up with its layout, was building a puzzle with the limited information he had way back in 1869. He left holes in the table but predicted that certain elements would be discovered—and then they were.

In addition to classroom instruction, what other tasks do chemistry teachers have?

The lab component involves a lot of preparation, such as making solutions and setting up the equipment. There’s the priority of student safety to consider too. We have to order chemicals and other supplies, and in all teaching there’s collaborating with colleagues, planning, and grading. We also do assessments and meet one-on-one with students to help those who need practice.

Tell me how you prepared for this career.

I have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. I later went back and got a master’s degree in chemistry education, and during a sabbatical I got a master’s in professional studies in food science. You also need to pass a background check to work with children, and you need to be certified. [All states require certification for teachers who work in public schools.]

What else does a chemistry teacher need to be successful?

For any teacher, it helps to have drive and creativity. For the chemistry part, you need to be able to simplify explanations without compromising accuracy. Chemistry is a complicated subject, and your class is often the first time students are hearing about it.

Did you always want to be a chemistry teacher?

From the earliest I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher like my dad. The chemistry piece came when I went to college and had to pick a major. My high school chemistry teacher was very influential, so I picked chemistry and stuck with it. I feel like it was the right choice.

Do you have advice for someone who wants to become a chemistry teacher?

It’s OK if, as a new teacher, you don’t know everything yet or don’t have all the answers. You’re still exuding positivity that students will benefit from, which veteran teachers don’t always have. There’s an enthusiasm in new teachers that can’t be replicated. Being a teacher can be difficult and exhausting, and it’s a near-impossible job if your heart’s not in it.

The students. I think teenagers are funny and resilient, and those are qualities that I’m drawn to. he population is growing. As the population grows, there are more people. More people means more things. More things mean more manufacturing jobs. Short of the Walking Dead becoming a reality, manufacturing jobs are here to stay, and your options are only growing. To begin this discussion on potential opportunities, let’s define what we mean when we discuss “manufacturing” as a career choice. In this sense, we are going to strictly look at the engineering realm that focuses in on manufacturing. This means anything from processes engineering to technology-intensive production, even to jobs that involve hands-on work with milling machines and 3D printers. With our scope defined, let’s see what options we have to get involved in the manufacturing industry. In the broader spectrum of the industry, there is an estimated need to replace 10 million manufacturing jobs in the US alone in the next 15 years. To grasp the full scope of the industry, you can take a look at the infographic on the next page. Improvements to additive manufacturing technologies and other processes have created an environment that is ripe with innovation and opportunity. With technological growth comes the fear of automation. Automation certainly threatens the jobs of less skilled workers in the manufacturing industry, but for the most part, it has made the jobs of engineers and machinists easier than ever. With this growth of automation technology, the job of the manufacturing engineer has not only gotten more innovative but also much more exciting. If you like the planning aspect of manufacturing, you can delve into the realms of industrial engineering or processes engineering. This gives you the chance to step back from the individual manufacturing tasks and design the whole process. Pursuing this path would present you with problems of efficiency, optimization, and planning. This is a broad description of what these job paths entail, but it should give you some idea of the direction that is possible within manufacturing planning. Planning not your thing? Well, there is virtually an endless number of processes that you can get involved with. Computer-aided

manufacturing (CAM), simulation, additive manufacturing, milling, assembly – manufacturing has it all. Additive manufacturing is by far the hottest aspect of the manufacturing industry in the current climate. With the rapid growth of 3D printing and other additive techniques, the limitations of what can feasibly be manufactured are shrinking. Apart from cost and scalability concerns, additive manufacturing has the potential to solve many of the bottlenecks in the current engineering fields. If you enjoy being on the cutting edge of technology, you may want to consider additive manufacturing as a career path. Within that realm, you could design the production software, the machines, or even solve problems for specific clients in their design process. While additive is the most talked about manufacturing process currently, CAM design, and milling are nonetheless essential to the broader industry. Computers have completely shifted the milling industry and essentially created the CAM industry. This means that most design and production of parts majoritively occurs behind the screen of a computer. While you’ll be sitting at a desk in the design process, this aspect of manufacturing engineering isn’t your typical desk job. You’ll be solving problems and creating new parts and components that can be used in virtually anything that is manufactured. Every company that produces a physical product is going to be needing a designer who knows his way around all of the top manufacturing programs on the market. As sort of a niche market of the manufacturing realm, you can also work in the simulation industry. This essentially means that you will be analyzing parts and components through computer programs to determine how they will react in the real world. While it is a small industry, it’s an option to pursue when looking into manufacturing.
