STRIVING FOR A FUTURE WHERE...

am blessed in my life, if I haven't shared that before. I am healthy, I have a wonderful partner and a great family. This spring, I was fortunate enough to travel internationally with my mother and sister. We went to London and Amsterdam, visiting museums, shopping, and eating delicious food. At one point we were in the very tourist-populated area of London called Covent Garden. It was a beautiful day—the weather couldn't have been more perfect—and it was at the time of the city's annual flower show, so there may have been even more tourists than usual. A couple of men walked in front of us holding hands. My sister said, "Look," pointing at the men, "It must be okay to be gay here." I instantly replied, "Of course it is," thinking "why wouldn't it be?" But then I immediately checked myself and remembered some of the places I know it's not okay to be in a same sex relationship, especially walking down the street holding hands. Russia, Dubai are examples, and then there's Brunei, a small country in Southeast Asia who has recently enacted an Islamic law that made gay sex punishable by flogging or stoning to death. It is so easy to take our liberties and sense of freedom for granted. Every now and then a detail comes up to remind us of that for which we should be grateful. Make sure not to miss the moment to reflect. Celebrating National LGBTQ Pride Month — June, 2019

mployers are increasingly adopting non-discrimination policies, expressing outward commitment to the LGBTQ community and taking other measures to support their LGBTQ employees. As getting a job at an LGBTQ-friendly company becomes more attainable, here are tips for finding the workplace environment that is right for you.

NETWORKING Tapping friends and peers in the LGBTQ community can help job seekers identify inclusive employers. Sam Young, Senior Director of Content, Creator, and Markets Operations at Spotify, transitioned careers as an openly queer, gender non-conforming woman. Young informed her connections that she was beginning her job search and asked them to refer her to companies that shared her values. She also sat down with friends and colleagues to find out what they enjoyed about their jobs to see what would potentially interest her as a career.

INTERVIEWING

Presenting signature style when networking and interviewing can ensure LGBTQ professionals find workplaces where they can present themselves comfortably.

“I knew that pretending to be someone else during recruitment meant I would have to continue faking it at the workplace.” -Sam Young, Senior Director of Content, Creator, and Markets Operations at Spotify

TIPS ——————————————————————— • Take inspiration by using LinkedIn or other networking platforms to connect with current employees and inquire about company culture. • A ttend LGBTQ-friendly conferences and networking events, that will provide the perfect backdrop for your job search.

When starting her career, Young was advised by a counselor to “soften” her look and present more femininely during her job search. But Young recognized that doing so could limit her potential to express herself: “I knew that pretending to be someone else during recruitment meant I would have to continue faking it at the workplace.” Since she felt safe presenting as herself during her second job search, Young took the opportunity to do so. “It’s possible that I missed out on opportunities by coming to interviews in a suit and tie, but a company that would only hire me if I wore a skirt and pumps was not a company I wanted to work for,” she said.

DID YOU KNOW? ———————————————— “20% of millennials identify as LGBTQ. That’s going to be 75% of the workforce by 2025.” —Erin Uritus, CEO of Out & Equal

My ambition is to be myself and be heard. Synchrony is more than a workplace—we’re a working forward place. A place that helps fulfill ambitions. A place where you’ll ensure customers succeed and we’ll do the same for you: through an extensive Diversity & Inclusion Network, leaders who believe differences are a competitive advantage, and a culture that celebrates you. Because we know you have goals of your own. And we’re here to help you achieve them.

SHOULD I COME OUT TO MY POTENTIAL EMPLOYER? It’s a question that’s never been easy to answer: should I come out to an employer before I accept a job offer? Each LGBTQ job seeker has to decide this for themselves. All job seekers should evaluate the environment of a business or organization before deciding whether to accept a position. Out & Equal recommends using the interview process to inquire about the inclusivity of a company. Ask questions such as: 1 | What are your core values? 2 | What resources do you provide to employees? 3 | How would you describe your company culture? 4 | What are your inclusion policies and practices? By digging into company culture, LGBTQ job seekers can determine whether they feel comfortable bringing their full, authentic selves to work. Researching companies online is another valuable way to learn more about an office environment. Glassdoor reviews can inform job seekers more about employee experiences, and LGBTQ-inclusive organizations may use their Glassdoor profiles to publish posts or photos that show their diversity and inclusion initiatives.

TIP —————————————————————————

Beck Bailey, Deputy Director of the Workplace Equality Program at the Human Rights Campaign also advises looking at the Human Right Campaign’s annual Corporate Equality Index, which rates the LGBTQ inclusivity of a company’s policies and practices — companies that scored 100 percent in 2018 include Boston Consulting Group, SAP and Delta Airlines.

hen deciding on a career path it is very difficult to know whether or not that industry will continue growing, become over saturated or even become completely redundant. It is clear that the trend is towards information technology and automation and this is set to remain the case for the foreseeable future. Traditional fields such as civil and petroleum engineering are still high in demand, but the fastest growing fields are those in the IT sphere. This article aims to list some of the engineering jobs that are most in-demand and show the greatest salary potential for 2019 and beyond. Looking to boost your engineering career? Take a look at the best Engineering Job Opportunities now on NewEngineer.com! 1. Data Science & Machine Learning

Software engineering has seen continuous growth over the past few years and there are no signs of it stopping. Data science is a branch of software engineering that involves creating meaningful information based on large amounts of data. These large datasets are known as big data and can come from a variety of sources such as e-commerce, medical or financial sectors. This field uses both statistics and software engineering to gather, analyze and present the gathered data in such a way as to allow the end user to optimize their specific services. A simple example of this is using the data of which products sell best during a specific time of year to create targeted marketing campaigns. Machine learning is a subset of data science that is used to make predictions of what might happen in the future based on data of what happened in the past. Machine learning algorithms will make predictions, test whether these predictions were accurate, and then optimize the algorithm to improve the accuracy of the prediction going forward. The more varied the volume of data available the better the predictions. A bachelor’s degree is not always necessary to begin a career in data science as there are various short courses that cover the required topics. However, it is important to note that a strong background in both mathematics and coding is necessary. Average Starting Salary: $89,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $109,000 Average Late Career Salary: $120,000

A robotics engineer is involved in every aspect of the design, development, testing and implementation of robotic systems. 2. A utomation & Robotics Engineer

Robotic systems are already good at performing menial repetitive tasks that don’t require the dexterity and attention to detail provided by a human worker. However, with constant advances in computing, energy storage and materials, robots are beginning to move from single arm welding and assembly robots to complex humanoid robots. A striking example of this are the Boston Dynamics robots. A robotics engineer is involved in every aspect of the design, development, testing and implementation of robotic systems. Robotics engineers are typically either mechanical, electronics or mechatronic engineers. With the relentless march towards automation, the only jobs safe from automation are those within automation. Average Starting Salary: $77,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $92,000 Average Late Career Salary: $99,000

3. Petroleum Engineer

Petroleum engineers typically work on drilling methods, design of drilling equipment and implementing & monitoring the drilling plan for the extraction of crude oil. Petroleum engineering has been in demand for the past few years and is set to continue growing in demand over the coming decade. Despite the push for electrical vehicles and clean energy, oil is still highly in demand as it is used in many different industries. Many petroleum engineers are expected to retire in the coming years, creating more demand than supply, thus it is a perfect time to get into the field. Average Starting Salary: $97,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $120,000 Average Late Career Salary: $140,000

4. Civil Engineering

branches of civil engineering which make it difficult to saturate the market and therefore a great field to be in. The main Civil engineering fields include; structural engineering, environmental engineering, road/ highway engineering and transportation engineering. Average Starting Salary: $59,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $72,000 Average Late Career Salary: $96,000

5. Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is another one of the traditional engineering fields that shows continued demand. Electrical engineering is a very broad field which includes; power engineering, instrumentation engineering and electronic engineering to name a few. The broad range of possible career paths within electrical engineering means that there will always be demand. Average Starting Salary: $67,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $82,000 Average Late Career Salary: $96,000

6. Alternative Energy Engineer

Due to the increased pressure being placed on the planet due to climate change there has been an international push towards clean & renewable energy. For example, the demand for solar energy technology has increased dramatically resulting in ever decreasing panel cost. This is creating a feedback loop that is further pushing up demand. There can be no doubt that alternative clean energy is the future. Despite coal fired power stations still making up the majority of global energy production, its growth has stagnated while alternative energy has grown. An energy engineer needs to start off with at least a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Thereafter a masters in energy engineering for the specific desired field can further improve job prospects. Average Starting Salary: $65,000

Civil engineering was a highly in-demand Average Mid-Level Salary: $82,000 job in 2018 and that trend will continue Average Late Career Salary: $91,000 into 2019. Civil engineers build the infrastructure on which the world runs. As such, 7. materials for everything that is manufactured get extracted from the ground. A mining engineer typically designs both open pit and underground mines and supervises the excavation and construction of these. They also design methods for processing and transporting the mined materials to various processing plants. While the consumption trend for iron is set to begin falling in the next few decades, demand for lithium, copper, nickel and various other metals required in electronics and batteries is set to continue growing. Average Starting Salary: $68,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $89,000 Average Late Career Salary: $109,000

8. Project Engineer

A project engineer is a critical field that is a necessity in every branch of engineering. Project engineering is not typically something that is explicitly studied because any engineering degree can land you a project engineering post. Thereafter, further study in project management is usually recommended to improve overall efficiency. A project engineer manages projects that are technical in nature that may include the design, procurement, manufacture and delivery of small simple components to complex chemical treatment plants. The role is multidisciplinary in nature that requires a fundamental technical understanding of every facet of the project. Average Starting Salary: $71,000 Average Mid-Level Salary: $89,000 Average Late Career Salary: $100,000

In Conclusion

The list of jobs mentioned in this article is by no means exhaustive but provides a good cross-section of the current job market. It is clear that jobs like data science and automation are the most in demand and offer higher than average starting and mid-level salaries. While traditional engineering fields still offer high salaries, it can be difficult to initially break into the industry as there tends to be an oversupply of entry-level engineers, however, after you specialize it becomes easier. Looking to boost your study in the field? Take a look at the best Engineering Educational Opportunities now on NewEngineer.com! Article provided by www.newengineer.com The career site for engineers.

20 of the Best Companies for Diversity & Inclusion by Emily Moore

n 2018, most companies know how important diversity is — after all, diversity can boost innovation, productivity and even financial performance. But despite that, many companies still struggle when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Some companies don’t view it as a top business priority, some don’t know how to start and still others are paying lip service only without taking real action. But make no mistake — there are companies out there that are getting it right.

To identify and honor these forward-thinking companies, Thompson Reuters recently released their 2018 Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Index. After factoring in environmental, social and governance data, Thompson Reuters assigned D&I scores to over 7,000 companies. Below are 20 companies with among the highest scores — if you’re looking for a company where you can bring your whole self to work, check out their job opportunities and apply today!

business seeks improvement, whether that’s through bottom-line improvement or finding the best candidates to fill certain positions. Sometimes the two objectives go hand-inhand, and actively seeking diverse candidates can help businesses improve both of these objectives. Diversifying your staff has been proven to lead to positive outcomes for multiple aspects of a business, but has your team ever thought about diversity in broader terms than a person’s race or gender? Recent trends have shown that businesses are beginning to embrace people with disabilities as a group to retain for a competitive advantage.

D

isability inclusion allows businesses to receive additional financial incentives and tax breaks, fulfill hiring goals set by federal contractors and improve productivity, overall morale and corporate culture. However, sometimes, a company’s hiring practices can unknowingly screen out people with disabilities. The company I work for, Tangram Business Resourcing, works with businesses helping them to recruit, employ and retain people with disabilities. We’ve found that changing some hiring practices can help businesses better recruit and retain a talent pool that includes people with disabilities. All businesses start with recruiting talent. HR professionals want to find the best candidates for their open positions, and recruiting practices dictate the types and quality of candidates that are ultimately attracted to these positions. Recruitment practices vary depending on the type of company, but common ways to recruit include industry-specific mailing lists, job fairs, hiring from within and advertisements. These options all work, but there is always room to improve your practices in order to achieve a more diverse staff.

Advertising —

Job seekers with disabilities utilize many of the same resources as job seekers without disabilities, such as online job boards, college career services, industry-specific outlets and newsletters. Businesses don’t always consider the option of using disability service providers and schools as venues to promote open positions. This allows recruiters to cast a wider net — a net that is usually free of charge. There are also online job boards such as this one by the American Association of People with Disabilities that are targeted to people with disabilities. These types of partnerships reach a large number of job seekers with disabilities that recruiters originally might not have had access to.

Job fairs —

Job fairs are a great way for companies to find a large number of job seekers all at one time. They’re also very common and often will target specific demographics, like veterans or college students. Businesses will find some degree of success when attending these job fairs, but they are limiting themselves if they don’t seek recruiting opportunities that

July 2019

equal opportunity employment journal

target people with disabilities. Community and educational partners can alert your recruitment team to job fairs reaching this demographic, including job fairs hosted by community colleges, vocational rehabilitation organizations and government-sponsored agencies and other disability service groups, or through transition fairs at high schools.

Make connections —

Learn more about the disability community and engage with organizations that are committed to helping jobseekers with disabilities find meaningful work. By building relationships with these groups, companies will be more aware of qualified candidates with disabilities that are looking for employment. When working or partnering with schools, connect with both their career and disability services.

Training —

Many recruiters have an initial idea of the kind of person they think will best fill a certain position. However, if these recruiters

don’t have experience working with people with disabilities, fear and preconceived notions about people with disabilities may be unintentionally coloring their recruitment practices. This unconscious bias can lead them to avoid people with disabilities, even when they may have all the skills and background required to do the job. Cornell University has an online toolkit for managers focused on helping them build a disability inclusive workforce. And the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a “best practices” workbook, which includes a disability inclusion assessment test to help employers critique and enhance their disability practices. Companies can access a larger pool of qualified job seekers with disabilities if they actively work on establishing new recruitment practices that target this segment of the population.

Disability Statistics from the Bureau of Labor

P

ersons with a disability tend to be older than persons with no disability, reflecting the increased incidence of disability with age. In 2018, 49 percent of persons with a disability were age 65 and older, compared with 16 percent of those with no disability. Overall, women were somewhat more likely to have a disability than men, partly reflecting the greater life expectancy of women. In 2018, the prevalence of disability continued to be higher for Blacks and Whites than for Hispanics and Asians. Employment The employment-population ratio for persons with a disability increased from 18.7 percent in 2017 to 19.1 percent in 2018. The ratio for those without a disability, at 65.9 percent, edged up in 2018. The lower ratio among persons with a disability reflects, in part, the older age profile of persons with a disability; older workers are less likely to be employed regardless of disability status. However, across all age groups, persons with a disability were much less likely to be employed than those with no disability. Among persons ages 16 to 64, employmentpopulation ratios rose for both persons with a disability (30.4 percent) and persons without a disability (74.0 percent) in 2018. The ratios for persons age 65 and older with a disability (7.4 percent) and without a disability (23.6 percent) were little changed from the previous year. Persons with a disability are less likely to have completed a bachelor's degree or higher than those with no disability. Among both groups, those who had attained higher levels of education were more likely to be employed than those who had attained less education. Across all levels of education in 2018, persons with a disability were much less likely to be

employed than were their counterparts with no disability. (Educational attainment data are presented for those age 25 and older.) Workers with a disability were more likely to be employed part time than those with no disability. In 2018, 31 percent of workers with a disability usually worked part time, compared with 17 percent of those without a disability. The proportion of workers with a disability who worked part time for economic reasons was slightly higher than their counterparts without a disability (4 percent, compared with 3 percent). These individuals were working part time because their hours had been reduced or because they were not able to find a full-time job. In 2018, persons with a disability were more concentrated in service occupations than those with no disability (19.0 percent, compared with 17.2 percent). Workers with a disability were also more likely than those with no disability to work in production, transportation, and material moving occupations (13.9 percent, compared with 11.8 percent). Persons with a disability were less likely to work in management, professional, and related occupations than those without a disability (33.7 percent, compared with 40.3 percent). The proportion of persons employed in government was slightly higher for persons with a disability than for persons without a disability in 2018 (14.1 percent, compared with 13.4 percent, respectively). A larger share of persons with a disability were self-employed than were those with no disability (10.2 percent, compared with 6.1 percent); a smaller share of workers with a disability were employed as private wage and salary workers (75.5 percent) than those with no disability (80.4 percent). Intercultural Management:

Key to Success in Hospitality & Tourism by Bisk

F Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at KSC, Inc. Mail Code DNPS Kennedy Space Center, FL 32899

LOEWS MIAMI BEACH HOTEL

We seek genuine individuals for our Loews Hotel jobs who are able to engage and delight our guests by providing Four Diamond AND MORE service.

“We should all learn how to understand and reduce our own unconscious bias.”

or decades, business experts have preached that diversity and inclusion drive business success. This is certainly the case in the hospitality and tourism industry, which relies on face-to-face interactions to satisfy and delight guests, support employees and encourage business growth. It should come as no surprise that two of the top four businesses on the 2019 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity are hospitality firms. In all companies, “diversity and inclusion is now a business strategy, not an HR program,” writes talent expert Josh Bersin. “It is a topic all CEOs and business leaders should take seriously, and we should all learn how to understand and reduce our own unconscious bias.” Management has a pivotal role to play in diversity and inclusion efforts. Hospitality leaders should be able to see the world through a cultural lens that helps them bring out the best in individuals and teams. With the proper perspective, they can embrace differences as strengths. Cultural dexterity may become even more critical moving forward. Research by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation says that almost 20% percent of Generation Z, which represents the next wave of U.S. workers, speak more than one language. Also, nearly twothirds of African-American, Latino and Asian members of Gen Z have a positive attitude toward hospitality careers, believing “the industry has popular companies or brands, has good diversity in the workplace, and offers good benefits and perks,” according to a recent report.

We embrace diversity at our core and offer the opportunity for all team members to reach their potential as professionals. We seek to create a dynamic culture that makes work interesting, challenging, fulfilling and fun. Please view current openings at:

Learning Leading Practices

Education programs such as the Advanced Specialized Certificate in Intercultural Management offered 100% online by the University of Notre Dame are designed to help professionals understand different work styles — including their own. Cross-cultural communication skills are studied and practiced. “The future challenge won’t be technical skills, but intercultural communication skills. People from different nationalities have layers or dimensions of differences,” according to a Notre Dame article. “Intercultural communication involves considerations of cultural identity, communication, collective or individual efforts, time, nature and power.”

July 2019

equal opportunity employment journal

Nationality is one of many dimensions of culture. Others include age, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation and socio-economic background.

The Broad Impact of Intercultural Management

Intercultural understanding has an impact beyond managing a diverse workforce at hospitality and tourism organizations. It can also improve the guest experience, which is critical for business success. “Appreciation and respect for multicultural diversity and a good understanding of cultural differences is the starting point to manage effectively diverse employees and to provide (through them) diverse guests with excellent service enriching their cultural experience,” according to a paper published in the Journal of Intercultural Management. On a broader scale, advancing intercultural management and diversity in the hospitality field is a key to fostering cultural relationships worldwide, notes Latinas in Business: “The industry presents a unique opportunity to learn new cultural experiences for both employees and tourists. … In the hospitality industry specifically, where customers are sourced from across the globe, a diverse workforce allows employees to bring a stronger cultural insight and understanding of the clients they are serving.”

Embracing Intercultural Management

Notre Dame offers these six tips for managers seeking to improve their intercultural acumen: • Research cultural norms of people you may interact with • Listen and observe when talking to people from other cultures • Ask questions if you are unsure about something • Accept that you may make mistakes along the way • Demonstrate self-awareness, understanding and empathy • Ask open-ended questions. How To Be Happy and Stay Happy

We

by Long Yun Sian

are always asking and searching for answers on how to be happy. Aristotle once said, "We are what we repeatedly do. Happiness then is not an act but a habit." If you want to be happy and stay happy you need to remember you have to work at it. Work at being happy? Yes. Everything that is worth having needs effort from you. That includes happiness. How to be happy and stay that way? Well, by constantly practicing being happy. Learn from your mistakes, adjust and work at it again. I liken the pursuit of happiness to a series of continuous short races that never ends. It is hard work but if you have the wisdom to see how it all adds up, you may just find your nirvana or heaven whichever the case maybe. If you want to be happy and to stay happy, you need to cultivate. That means see yourself nurturing the habits that brings happiness to you. You may not succeed everyday in doing it, but this pursuit of perfection is what will contribute bit by bit you being happy and staying that way. What are some of the things you can do then on how to be happy and stay happy?

Giving

Here we are not just talking about charity. Giving involves a lot more. It means giving up bad habits. What are the bad habits that bring you stress? Give up on these habits. Are you disorganized? Being disorganized in all aspects of your life may deprive you a lot of happiness you are seeking. Once you learn to give up bad habits you will gradually become happier. Ever considered giving in? Do you hold on to opinions that you hide as principles and are too egoistic to let go? Give in; you do not always need to win an argument. You do not always need to be the car in front in a traffic jam. You will soon learn when you give in; you do not lose but stand more to gain. Give out, yes by this it means charity. Help someone in need and do not judge who is worthy of your help. Help a rich person who is in need. Sometimes people think there are people unworthy of our help. The practice of giving to gain happiness is one that helps us learn about detachment.

Think, Say and Do

A leader in the office furniture industry. Nationwide career opportunities. See our career opportunities at www.hnicareers.com and listed with state workforce training and development centers. As Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employers, the office furniture companies of HNI Corporation support the advancement of all people based on their qualifications and experience without regard to race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, national origin, marital status, veteran status, citizenship status, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information or any other status protected by law.

In all that you think, say and do. Make sure there are as congruent as possible. A lot of times, what you preach to people and what you practice is different. When what you think, feel and do is not in line you will not find happiness. Even if you do, it will not stay that way. Think good thoughts. Do not scheme behind people's back and think good of people. Think how you can help people rather than plot for selfish goals. Avoid telling lies, gossiping and harsh speech. The Chinese has a saying loosely translated that says, "Sickness comes in through the mouth, trouble come out from the mouth." It means we become sick from the things we ingest and we get into trouble with the things we say. Ask yourself, do you speak the truth? Do you speak gently? Say things that will help others? And speak at a proper time and place? Do good things and be of good conduct. It can be as simple as not getting intoxicated, being organized, not procrastinating or even waking up early to get your life organized. Small things like these add up to being happy and staying that way. How to be happy and to stay happy is a cultivation that takes time. It cannot be overnight and it is not one that you do and forget. Take small steps, you will stumble but if you keep at it, eventually you will feel happier and stay that way longer. Long Yun Siang or Long, as he is popularly known runs http://career-success-fornewbies.com with his wife Dorena as their way of paying it forward. Their website provides tips, tools and advise for newbies pursuing career success.

Connecting Your Career Dots by Tim Urban

areers used to be kind of like a 40-year tunnel. You picked your tunnel, and once you were in, that was that. You worked in that profession for 40 years or so before the tunnel spit you out on the other side into your retirement. The truth is, careers have probably never really functioned like 40-yeartunnels, they just seemed that way. At best, traditional careers of the past played out kind of like tunnels. Today’s careers—especially the less traditional ones—are really not like tunnels. But crusty old conventional wisdom has a lot of us still viewing things that way, which makes the already hard job of making big career path choices much harder. When you think of your career as a tunnel, it causes an identity crisis in anyone who doesn’t feel sure of who exactly they are and who they’ll want to be decades from now—which is most sane people. It enhances the delusion that what we do for work is a synonym for who we are, making a question mark on your map seem like an existential disaster. When you think of your career as a tunnel, the stakes to make the right choice seem so high that it explodes the feeling of tyranny of choice. For perfectionist types especially, this can be utterly paralyzing. When you think of your career as a tunnel, you lose the courage to make a career switch, even when your soul is begging for it. It makes switching careers feel incredibly risky and embarrassing, and it suggests that someone who does so is a failure. It also makes all kinds of multi-faceted, vibrant, mid-career people feel like they’re too old to make a bold switch or start a whole new path afresh. But conventional wisdom still tells many of us that careers are tunnels. As the icing on its shit cake—on top of helping us yearn for things we don’t actually want, deny yearnings that we feel deep down, fear things that aren’t dangerous, and believe things about the world and our potential that aren’t accurate—conventional wisdom tells us that careers are a tunnel to help us daunt the shit out of ourselves unnecessarily.

Connecting the Dots

Today’s career landscape isn’t a lineup of tunnels, it’s a massive, impossibly complex, rapidly changing science laboratory. Today’s people aren’t synonymous with what they do—they’re impossibly complex, rapidly changing scientists. And today’s career isn’t a tunnel, or a box, or an identity label—it’s a long series of science experiments. Steve Jobs compared life to connecting the dots, pointing out that while it’s easy to look at your past and see how the dots connected to lead you to where you are, it’s basically impossible in life to connect the dots of the future. If you look at the biographies of your heroes, you’ll see that their paths look a lot more like a long series of connected dots than a straight and predictable tunnel. If you look at yourself and your friends, you’ll probably see the same trend—according to data, the median time a young person stays in a given job is only 3 years (older people spend a longer time on each dot, but not that much longer—10.4 years on average). So seeing your career as a series of dots isn’t a mental trick to help you make decisions—it’s an accurate depiction of what’s actually happening. And seeing your career as a tunnel isn’t just unproductive—it’s delusional. Likewise, you’re limited to focusing mainly on the next dot on your path—because it’s the only dot you can figure out. You don’t have to worry about dot #4 because you can’t anyway—you’re literally not qualified to do so. By the time dot #4 rolls around, you will have learned stuff about yourself you don’t know now. You’ll also have changed from who you are

now, and your Yearning Octopus will reflect those changes. You’ll know a lot more than you currently do about the career landscape and the specific game boards you’re interested in, and you’ll have become a much better game player. And of course, that landscape—and those game boards— will have themselves evolved. The fantastic website www.80000hours. com (which exists to help young, talented people work through their career choices) has compiled a lot of data to back this up: data on the fact that you’ll change, that the world will change, and that you’ll only learn with time what you’re actually good at. Popular psychologist Dan Gilbert also eloquently describes just how bad we are at predicting what will make us happy in the future.

makes the number of options exciting, not stressful. And that’s all great in theory. But now comes the hard part.

Making Your Move

You’ve reflected and reflected and reflected and weighed and measured and predicted and considered. You’ve chosen a dot and drawn an arrow. And now you have to actually make the move. We’re super bad at this. We’re frightened people. We don’t like icky things and making a bold, real-life step is icky. If there’s any ounce of procrastination susceptibility in us, here’s where it’ll show itself. If you’ve decided on a life step and you can’t quite take it, it’s because the parts of you that don’t want to make a move are

Steve Jobs compared life to connecting the dots, pointing out that while it’s easy to look at your past and see how the dots connected to lead you to where you are, it’s basically impossible in life to connect the dots in the future. Pretending you can figure out what dot #2 or #4 or #8 should be now is laughable. Future dots are the worry of a future, wiser you living in a future world. So let’s focus on dot #1. If we’re thinking of ourselves as scientists and of society as a science lab, we should think of your current freshly revised WantReality Venn Diagram as nothing more than an early, rough hypothesis. Dot #1 is your chance to test it out. Hypothesis testing is intuitive in the dating world. If a friend were toiling over what kind of person she wants to marry but never went out with anyone, you’d tell her, “You can’t figure this out on your couch—you’ve gotta start going on dates, and that’ll teach you what you want in a partner.” If that friend then went on a solid first date and returned home to toil for hours about whether or not this new person was The One, you’d again have to correct her. You’d say, “There’s no way you can know that from just one date! You have to get some experience dating this person to learn what you need to learn to make that decision.” We can all agree that this hypothetical friend is pretty nuts and is lacking a fundamental understanding of how you find a happy relationship. So let’s not be like her when it comes to picking our career. Dot #1 is a chill situation—it’s just a first date. This is awesome news—because it makes it a lot less scary to draw an arrow on your map if it’s only an arrow to dot #1 of your future. The real cause of tyranny of choice is accurately seeing the sheer number of options you have in today’s world while delusionally seeing those careers as the 40year tunnels of yesterday’s world. That’s a lethal combo. Reframing your next major career decision as a far lower-stakes choice

ranked higher in your subconscious than the parts of you that do. Your conscious mind may have tried to assign lower shelf ratings to the parts of your octopus that lean towards inertia, but your yearnings have rebelled. You’re a CEO not in control of their staff. To fix this problem, think like a kindergarten teacher. In your class, a faction of the 5-year-olds is rebelling against your wishes. What do you do? Go talk to the 5-year-olds that are causing the trouble. They’re unpleasant, defiant simpletons, but they can still be reasoned with. Talk to them about why you’ve ranked them lower than others in the octopus hierarchy. Describe to them the insights you gained from your Reality Box reflection. Remind them about how connecting the dots works and about the chillness of dot #1. You’re the teacher—figure it out. The older I get, the clearer it becomes that our internal battle as the kindergarten teachers of our mind is like 97% of life’s struggle. The world is easy—you’re difficult. If you find yourself continually not executing your plans in life and your promises to yourself, you’ve uncovered your new #1 priority—becoming a better kindergarten teacher. Until you do, your life will be run by a bunch of primitive, short-sighted 5-year-olds, and your whole shit will suck. Trust me, I know. If your inner analysis does call for a career leap to a new dot, I hope that at some point, you’re able to make the jump. hese are some of my simple and most effective relieve stress at work techniques I have used which I find very useful for myself. I am sharing with you these techniques so you can use it. Of course, I am not saying it will work for you - but try it, and see if it works. Drop me an email and let me know how it went. And if you modified it, let me know how well it worked so I ma-y share with the rest.

1. The Mass Quick Emails

EOE: Minority / Female / Disability / Veteran

ButlerHealthSystem.org

Some people just like to keep everyone copied. You can’t do anything about it. Even when it is just for your information and if you do not read it you don’t want to get caught with people saying they sent you that email. So, everyone is paranoid and wanting to cover their back. What do you do? If you are like me and want to be in the loop and read every email or even scan every email that comes in, then do it early in the morning. Get it out of the way. Having a triple digit or even a high double digit number in your email in-box will just give you more stress. To relieve stress at work? Clear those emails before they mount up.

2. The Standard Answer

I know this doesn’t sound right. Let me explain why I call this the standard answer. These are emails that need your reply, your decision or your input. So go ahead and reply them quickly. They usually need a “Please go ahead”, “I agree”, “Noted” and the likes. You know what I mean. These are the emails that if you do not answer, the next one will go, “Hi John, Your POV?” or a “Dear John, wonder if you agree?”

Ever delay a phone call that needs your attention? An answer you owe someone? These are one of those things that clog your mind and adds stress to you without you knowing it. Procrastinating on the matter will just add on pressure. No matter how difficult it is, just get it done. I think about the many occasions I have procrastinated on these calls. They were easy calls to make. The excuse, if you are like me it is always about it’s so easy it can wait. But meantime, it’s just at the back of your mind and you get stressed without knowing. One way to relieve stress at work is to clear out these easy things. It can also come in the form of a promise waiting to be delivered. Small but you said it and you wanted to keep to your word. For example, the price of a particular item a competitor charges which you promised to get back to a colleague. Just look it up, pick up the phone or drop that email. Done. You would have relieved stress at work without even knowing it.

4. The Follow Up

There will always be follow ups and next steps if you have meetings and discussions. Do not let the “follow up action steps” crawl up on you if you want to relieve stress at work. After a work in progress meeting, start to do the list you are suppose to do, immediately. Otherwise, before you know it the next meet is up. Do these and you automatically relieve stress at work. You leave work knowing you have gotten more work done with less stress. Working with Different Generations in the Workplace: What You Need to Know

M

any employers these days pride themselves in maintaining a rich workplace culture. After all, diverse ideas can be a recipe for long-term success in any industry. This is where it can be valuable to have generational diversity in the workplace--but only if employees from different generational backgrounds are able to collaborate and communicate effectively.

Common Workplace Generations

Currently, there are employees from numerous generations in the workplace and in a variety of industries. These include: • Baby Boomers (those born immediately following WWII) • Generation X-ers (those born in the 60s through 1980) • Generation Y-ers/Millennials (those born 1980 through mid 90s) • Generation Z-ers (those born mid-90s through early 2000s) Naturally, workers from each of these generations will have different viewpoints, strengths, and weaknesses that they bring to the table. For example, many baby boomers who are still in the workplace have a strong work ethic due to the difficult times in which they grew up. On the other hand, some of them may not be as well-versed with computers and other technology as employees from more recent generations. Of course, this isn't a blanket statement that's true of all baby boomers, but it is a useful example when it comes to thinking about how generation gaps could potentially affect the workplace.

Tips for Working With Different Generations

With numerous generations commonly represented in today's typical work environment, it only makes sense that leaders and decision-makers should be adequately prepared to work with employees across generations. Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done.

The key here is to encourage individuals The key here is to encourage to work in a way that's best for them and for individuals to work in a way that's the company. Adapt to Communication Styles

One important thing to remember is that workers from different generations have very different expectations and strengths when it comes to communication styles. While millennials and generation Z employees are likely comfortable with sending out an e-mail to a customer or receiving e-mail communication from a superior, your older generations (such as the baby boomers within your company) may be more comfortable with making a phone call or speaking to a client face-to-face. When it comes to communicating with your multi-generational employees, keep these potential strengths and weaknesses in mind. For example, rather than sending out all your team communications via e-mail, consider holding the occasional meeting or conference call.

Understand Workplace Expectations

Different generations also have different cultural expectations—especially when it comes to their work-life balance. Workers from your baby boomer and X generation likely grew up during a time when employees logged all their hours from their workplace. These workers may not bat an eye at the thought of a traditional Monday through Friday, 40-hour (or more) work week. On the other hand, many millennials and generation Z-ers have grown up in a time where telecommuting has become more common. Rather than working at the office 9-5 Monday through Friday, they may have expectations to work from home a day or two a week.
