Editorial Comment Every summer in Arizona there comes a time when the long summer days with their unrelenting 100+ degree temperatures become tiresome if not nearly unbearable. And even though it's “a dry heat” and the lack of humidity makes 110 degrees feel like 90, by July, Arizonans are ready for a change when it comes to the weather. Every year it comes in the form of thunderstorms we call monsoons. Depending on the time of the day, a monsoon can turn the sky dark blue or black or purple or red—the wind rushes through the trees and the water falls, bathing thirsty plants and bringing life to the parched earth. And oh, how it changes the scent of the desert! The strong and smoky smell of creosote, heavy and asphalty, hangs in the air like a cloth. Lightning and thunder are common, too, and the world outside feels different for anywhere between 10 minutes and a couple of hours. It is magnificent. And then there's the flip side. Flash floods are common, where dry creek beds swell and overflow closing streets and stranding people in their cars. Wind damages homes and old trees. Tornados can even form making traveling hazardous. Not to mention that adding that much moisture in a normally dry atmosphere increases the humidity to a much higher percentage than we are used to and we long for the dryness once again. And every year around the end of September dryness comes. It's rare that something is all good or all bad—mostly things are a combination—and sometimes, passing seasons can illuminate the distinction.

DYNAMIC DIVERSITY by Edward Chenard
was talking to a guy the other day who was telling me that more people of a certain ethic group should be hired by a certain company, for diversity. It should be pointed out that this ethnic group in question happened to be the one he is a part of. Having hired people myself I really started to wonder about this whole diversity question and what really is diversity when it comes to business settings? Yes we know people of various ethnic groups or skin color or even gender can be called diversity, but what really makes a person diverse, is it really just skin deep or more about diversity of thinking? I like to travel, mainly because I get to meet people I have no clue about how they live or what they consider the norm. It is fun because it is much like solving a puzzle with prizes along the way. Get it right and people usually are quite open. Being of a mixed background myself, the word diversity is not something I pick up just for the office, I live it daily. So when I hear that being part Latin makes me qualified for diversity, I really wonder, does it? When a company is looking for diversity, what kind of diversity counts? Shouldn’t how I think and the unique ideas I bring be the real measure of diversity? Diversity in the way we think counts the most. I go back to that great little cauldron of social experiments in business I call grad school. Where, I had to work with all kinds of people that would fit the traditional diversity definition. But when it came to thinking, most students could be considered a homogeneous group by the time they graduated regardless of where in the world they came from. Reason being, grad school is as much about what you learn as how you think. Since we learn the same, technically we would solve problems the same. In terms of solving business issues, the students had more in common with each other in terms of thinking, thus diversity in thought was very low, even thought diversity in terms of ethnic background was very high. This is important when it comes to hiring because if you hire based on ethnic diversity, the diversity you need, is not necessarily what you will get. The students will solve the problem pretty much the same because they have the same training. So if you were looking for new and fresh ideas, I would gamble that disappointment was the end result regardless of the cultural background of the student. Take for example, a job I had where I was brought in to shake things up, make big changes and get new ideas going. I was hired for diversity reasons, my diversity was in the way I think and approach problems and opportunities. My ethnic background wasn’t all that dissimilar from many team members, but where I grew up and how I grew up was, and that shaped how I think and approach challenges. My diversity in thinking is what helped shake things up. Did they always like this? No, some people like to do things that are comfortable and don’t like someone questioning them as to why they are doing what they are. But that is what was needed to get the ball rolling and get changes made. As a hiring manager it can be hard to know if you are getting the kind of diversity you need. It first starts by understanding what you lack. If you have an office full of Yes people, getting someone who challenges your ideas, respectfully, can be a form of diversity of thought. To find out, you need to get away from the usually interview waltz which I personally don’t find that helpful. I love to ask a candidate “how are you going to solve my company’s problems?” A great question to finding out how a person thinks and engages in situations presented to them. Get to know where they grew up, how they think and engage others and if their style is right for you. Now since the readership of this site is very international, you will have to check your local hiring laws to make sure you don’t cross the line and ask questions that can get you in trouble. In the end, diversity of thought is not about hiring someone based on background, but on individual contribution to the team. This kind of diversity hiring I believe will catch on when managers really put aside the cookie cutter hiring process and get down to answering what they really need and addressing the issues head on and solving them. Diversity of thought is the way to hire. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

3 Reasons to Pursue a Career in Engineering E
Page 7
by Sam Woolfe
ngineering is the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the invention, design, improvement, maintenance, and understanding of manmade structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, and processes. There are different types of engineering, including civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and computer engineering. Pursuing a career in engineering carries a number of advantages, but three of the main benefits are the transferable skills you gain, the high demand for engineers, and attractive compensation.
1. Transferable Skills
Whatever type of engineering you specialize in, your work will focus on solving complex problems – a skill that is highly sought after in all sorts of industries. In fact, engineering boasts a panoply of transferable skills which means that—if you ever wanted to switch careers or industries—your engineering experience would prove very useful. Other skills you would gain as an engineer include project planning, analytical thinking, logical thinking, attention to detail,
communication, teamwork, numeracy, and computer literacy. In an application or interview for a job, you could bring up a complex engineering problem and cite the skills that enabled you to devise an effective solution and deliver high-quality results. Even if the job has nothing whatsoever to do with the type of engineering you specialised in, an employer will still be impressed by your ability to learn and utilise skills that are relevant to their business.
2. Engineers Are in High Demand
Engineering is one of the most in-demand careers. Given the huge developments in technology, science, and computing, engineers will be in high demand over the coming decades, and they currently have one of the lowest unemployment rates in any of the major sectors. Some of the most in demand engineering jobs include software engineering jobs, aerospace engineering jobs, civil engineering jobs, environmental engineering jobs, and biomedical engineering jobs. You also don’t necessarily have to study a particular type of engineering in order to pursue
a career in, say, mechanical engineering; nor do you even need to study engineering in general in order to become an engineer. The 10 most popular degrees for people who work in engineering are Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Business Administration, Information Science Studies, Civil Engineering, and Chemistry.
3. High Salary
Engineering is an extremely lucrative career path. In the US, a newly graduated electrical engineer can expect to earn over $57,000 a year, while mid-career salaries are nearly $90,000. The starting salary for a hardware computer engineer is nearly $64,000 per annum, while a mid-career salary is over $100,000. A graduate with a degree aerospace engineering can expect to earn over $65,000 in their first job, which will then rise to over $103,000 in the middle of their career. A chemical engineer has perhaps the highest starting salary, at $94,000 a year.

Statistics show year after year that engineers have the highest average starting salary. Plus, if you really excel in your career path, then the financial rewards will be huge. A computer hardware engineer in the top 10% of earners, for example, can make over $170,000 a year.

If employability and financial security are major concerns for you, then a career in engineering is worth serious consideration. However, the benefits of engineering extend far beyond salary. Engineers make a real difference to the world by designing, maintaining, and improving so many things that we all depend on and benefit from in our day-to-day lives. A career in engineering can be meaningful and fulfilling for this very reason. Interview with a CAD Designer Interview with Heather Walk from Erie, Pennsylvania by Elka Torpey
What do you do?
I use computer-aided design (CAD) software to plan projects. When my company builds or renovates a manufacturing facility, I handle the layout for it. I review drawings, do some design work, and research to make sure that all of the required building codes and standards for our facilities are up to date. I also do drafting work of all kinds, including electrical, mechanical, and architectural.
designer wants done. It’s pretty common for a drafter to move up to become a CAD designer.
What else helped you get started?
Practical experience is helpful. When I went to school, the school helped to arrange jobs that would help us gain some experience. Also, professional certification isn’t required, but it helps to show prospective employers that you know what you’re doing.
Tell me about a project you’ve worked on.

How did you prepare for this career?
Most CAD designers have a background in drafting. I began taking drafting classes in high school. I fell in love with it. I originally wanted to be an architect, but I went to school for architectural drafting instead. I got my associate’s degree in specialized technology. Twenty years ago, drafting was more of an art. We primarily used drafting boards. Now most drafting uses CAD, so you have to be computer savvy.
What is your best advice for aspiring CAD designers?
Work hard and make sure you pay attention to details. If you miss something, it could cost thousands of dollars for your firm to fix. It’s all about the details. Don’t do this job if you don’t like working on computers. This is a desk job; you’re not going to be out in the field as much as you might think. uilding a career in law enforcement is a challenging and rewarding task at the same time. Sworn law enforcement officers have the authority to carry firearms, make arrests and have taken an oath to enforce the law. Different officers have various job titles, career opportunities and duties that we will summarize in our guide below. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the United States Department of Labor in 2014 there were 3,44,3800 people in protective service occupations and the projected number for 2024 is 3,597,700, which means 4.5% growth. That is lower than the average for the country. The demand however, varies according to the specific career within law enforcement you would like to pursue. While the demand for police officers and detectives is expected to raise by 4% for the same period (2014-2024), the need for more specialized experts, especially in the field of Information and Technology will be much greater. The demand for Cybersecurity Specialists is expected to increase by more than

Law enforcement career list by type of job A law enforcement officer can occupy three basic types of jobs: uniformed officer, investigator/detective, and support staff. The daily activities and duties of police officers and detectives differ according to their specialty however they all have one thing in common in addition to keeping us safe: writing reports and maintaining well-kept records of the incidents they deal with. This is of particular importance when they have to testify in court, for example. Here are a few details about each type of job, that you might be interested in.
responding to calls also takes up a great part of their working day. In smaller towns the uniformed police officer may patrol alone but in some areas, especially larger urban areas, this can be done with a partner. The larger police agencies are organized into districts/precincts and each patrolling officer has a specific region to cover. The officers become familiar with their patrol area and while on patrol they remain alert for anything that looks unusual or suspicious. While on their shift, the uniformed officer may identify, pursue and arrest suspected criminals, resolve community problems, respond to domestic violence incidents, etc. Many urban police agencies practice the so called “community policing” – an officer builds relationships with the citizens of a neighborhood and mobilizes them to assist in fighting crime by learning what to watch for be providing information to the police. Uniformed police officers may also have some investigative functions , however, a police agency usually has a separate investigative division. Investigators and detectives (plainclothes officers) The second large branch of law enforcement career opportunities includes the investigators, detectives, and special agents, or the so called plainclothes officers. Detectives gather facts and collect evidence for criminal cases. They conduct interviews with suspects and witnesses, participate in suspect observations, and in raids and making arrests. Some detectives are part of inter-agency task forces that deal with specific crimes such as fraud, human trafficking, drugs, etc. Detective are assigned to a specific cases and work the case until it is resolved, which

Support Positions
The support positions in law enforcement are as important as the uniformed and plainclothes officers. Usually these are professionals who support the investigation and deal with things like categorizing evidence, ballistic tests and examinations, lab tests and experiments. For example, the person in charge of inventorying the evidence is called an evidence technician. Often the support positions are with larger agencies or crime labs. The job openings are filled by personnel hired specifically to do that job or by officers and agents who have advanced in their career. Levels of operation in the law enforcement career list
All three types of law enforcement jobs listed above are utilized for law enforcement agencies at all three levels of government. The three basic levels are local, state and federal. The duties and responsibilities of all officers differ depending on their specific position and the level at which they operate. Below you can find the basic details of the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer at each level.

September 2019 police chief. The difference is that they are usually elected to their posts. The sheriff deputies also provide security in county courts and as such are sometimes referred to as bailiffs.
State
State police officers or state troopers are those who patrol on the highways and are in charge of motor vehicle laws. Their main tasks include issuing traffic citations, directing traffic at crime scenes and giving first aid to accident victims. State police officers often assist other law enforcement agencies. They also have court-related duties, answer to calls, perform investigative or administrative work.
Federal
There are many agencies that operate at federal level. FBI or the Federal Bureau of Investigation is the government’s principal investigative agency. The FBI can conduct investigations in more than 200 areas concerning federal law and can deal with sensitive information and issues related to the national security. Some of the criminal investigations carried out by FBI Agents include organized crime, cyber-crime, terrorism, kidnapping, drug and human trafficking, corruption. Specialized Federal agencies – in addition to FBI, there are many other specialized agencies that enforce federal law in specific sectors. The Secret Service is responsible for protecting the President, vice President and their families, as well as other public officials. The agents working for the Secret Service are two types – Special Agents and Uniformed Officers, and both have very specific responsibilities and have to meet very high criteria to be employed. Other specialized federal law enforcement officers are the Federal Air Marshals, who provide air security, US Border Patrol agents who enforce illegal immigration, US Drug Enforcement (DEA) agents dealing with all aspects of illegal drugs and Custom Inspectors who supervise all imports and exports and enforce the laws governing all the cargo, baggage, items, etc., that enter or leave the USA. Other – sworn law enforcement officers with arrest powers are employed by other federal agencies as well. Some of the major names are the Postal Services, the Forest Service, the National Park Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Law Enforcement. All law enforcement officers, regardless of their specific job title or level at which they work, should keep immaculate paperwork. They are responsible for writing reports and keeping records of all accidents as these might be necessary if they testify in court.
At a local level uniformed officers and detectives are responsible for enforcing the law in a certain area such as a town or city. They pursue and apprehend individuals who break the law, investigate burglaries, homicides, and any suspicious activity they notice. Uniformed police officers patrol, respond to calls and may be in charge of traffic direction at a crime scene, while detectives gather evidence and conduct Basic salary informainterviews until the case is resolved

enture capital is the new frontier: the Gold Rush of the 21st century. With money flowing from the industry like water in spring, and profits growing like wildflowers at the base of the runoff it’s not surprising that so many financiers, young and old, are looking to the business of startup investment. In the last twenty or so years the growth of the “startup world” has gone from garage ideas to college goals. What was once a handful of visionary pioneers has become the aspirational goal of an entire generation. What is interesting, however, is that despite the relatively new market, fueled by relatively young investors with more globalized and inclusive views, historically underrepresented groups are still underrepresented. According to a report published by digitalundivided.com, less than 1% of the more than $400B invested in startups since 2009 has gone to companies led by Latinx women. While the data does focus startup leadership, the relationship between VC firms and the startups they fund is undeniable; if there isn’t diversity in the VCs funding startups, then why would we expect to see diverse leadership in the startups being invested in. A different survey conducted by NVCA and Deloitte found that despite women making up 45% of the VC workforce, only 15% were in investment roles and only 11% were investment partners. What’s more is that only 1% are investment professionals and only 4% of the investment partner population identifies as Hispanic or Latinx. Examining the relationship between VCs and startups there definitely seems to be a correlation between gender and ethnic representation of both VC firms and startups. Comparing the two reports the data snapshot yields a very similar picture: a painfully small female representation in leadership and an even smaller representation of Latinx leaders. Moving forward, this data can prompt change. The question now is: how do we effectuate this change? If we want representation to change and diversity to increase we need to foster interest and access well before the job market. The finance world and venture capital world specifically need to be both accessible and interesting to the demographics lacking representation. Raising awareness at the high school level as a potential career path can be a great primer, but retention is realistically going to come at the college level via mentorships, internships and university-workforce relationships. Mary Ann Azevedo interviewed three prominent Latinx women active in the VC market in her article Latina VCs Are Optimistic About Opportunities In Their Industry. In their commentaries, Latinx VC leaders Maria Salamanca, Vanessa Larco, and Jomayra Herrera expressed very similar opinions when it came to how Latinx individuals and, in particular, how Latinx women get involved in Venture Capital work. In all three cases, the interviewees arrived at their careers indirectly.

May an employer ask if an applicant is a “disabled veteran” when seeking to hire someone with a service-connected disability?
Yes. Although employers generally may not ask for medical information from applicants prior to making a job offer, they may invite applicants to voluntarily self-identify for affirmative action purposes. See EEOC Enforcement Guidance: Disability-Related Inquiries and Medical Examinations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
What steps should an employer take if asking an applicant to self-identify as a “disabled veteran” for affirmative action purposes?
If an employer invites applicants to voluntarily self-identify, the employer must indicate clearly and conspicuously on any written questionnaire used for this purpose, or state clearly (if no written questionnaire is used), that: The information requested is intended for use solely in connection with its affirmative action obligations or its voluntary affirmative action efforts; and The specific information is being requested on a voluntary basis, it will be kept confidential in accordance with the ADA, that refusal to provide it will not subject the employee to any adverse treatment, and that it will be used only in accordance with the ADA. Information collected for affirmative action purposes must be kept separate from the application to ensure that confidentiality is maintained. The Code of Federal Regulations provides a Sample Invitation to SelfIdentify for federal contractors who are considered covered entities under VEVRAA.
My ambition is to be myself and be heard.
Are there tax incentives for hiring veterans with service-connected disabilities?
Yes, there are tax incentives for employers hiring and accommodating veterans with service-connected disabilities under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit(WOTC) program. Employers receive tax credits when they hire veterans who have completed or are receiving rehabilitative services through the state or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or who are members of families receiving or have recently received food stamps.
Aren’t there safety concerns and higher insurance rates associated with hiring veterans with serviceconnected disabilities?
There is no evidence indicating a correlation between hiring veterans with service-connected disabilities and an increase in insurance rates. In fact, evaluating and restructuring job functions and processes, as well as accommodating an employee when necessary, may increase overall safety Employers must ratings.
Are there reporting requirements after you hire a veteran with a serviceconnected disability?
Yes, employers that are federal contractors and subcontractors must complete the VETS100 Report. VEVRAA requires some federal contractors to establish annual hiring benchmarks for protected veterans, and to collect and analyze employment data.

arvard University Professor Frank Dobbin published a controversial article in 2016 – Why Diversity Programs Fail – that boldly concluded diversity training generally doesn’t work. This article shook the confidence of many in the diversity and inclusion profession. Even worse, it came just before an era, when the world needs awareness and inclusion more than ever. But the good news is, buried in the research – and in other articles like it – is a simple formula on how to make diversity training work.
The Key to Effective Diversity Training: Daily Practice
Dobbin’s research concludes it’s unrealistic to believe an annual two-hour training session – on its own – will improve behavior. It’s more effective for organizations to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, as part of an everyday practice. Effective diversity training must be part of related efforts, emphasizing antibias training throughout the year, wrote Katerina Bezrukova. She’s co-author of a diversity training study in Psychological Bulletin, and an associate professor at the University of Buffalo’s School of Management. Shane Green, author of Culture Hacker, concludes: “Like all training, bias and diversity training cannot be a once-a-year event that ticks the box for

corporate compliance. For training to be effective, the message must be reinforced regularly.”
How: Put Diversity on Your Calendar Perhaps the best way to make awareness and inclusion part of your daily workplace, is to leverage a calendar. This can be done by getting a diversity calendar – electronic or print – or by adding some key events to your company Outlook. Here are some ways to use a calendar to instill awareness & inclusion: 1. Monthly Themes – there are dozens of monthly diversity heritage themes throughout the year. These include Black History Month, Women’s History Month, LGBT Pride Month and more. These provide great opportunities to shout out to these diversity groups. 2. Religious Events – most people identify with some religion. Many religious holidays affect the workplace, and require respectful time off from work. These include Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist holidays. In the United States, Christianity is by far the most widelypracticed religion, so be sure to not take Christian holidays for granted. 3. Notable Birthdays – our nation celebrates the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. But what about living diversity pioneers, such as
Our Employees Connect Brilliant Minds Every Day
Barack Obama (first Black president), Hillary Clinton (first female major-party nominee for US President) Tim Cook (first openlyLGBTQ+ Fortune 500 CEO), Roberto Goizueta (first Hispanic Fortune 500 CEO), etc. To make diversity and inclusion real, use these calendar events as opportunities for learning about inclusion. If it’s LGBT Pride Month, for example, provide tips on do’s and dont’s with LGBT co-workers and customers.

Advice for New Teachers: 10 Tips to Make Your First Day a Success
F
irst impressions matter, and nowhere and at no time more than on your first day with a new class. While you want the students to like you, remember they’ll be keen to test your mettle and get the measure of how much they can get away with. It’s better to start out conveying a sense of firm but fair discipline and loosen up down the line, than be seen as “soft.” The following 10 tips should get you off to a great start.
by Austin Hackney
1. Introduce Yourself
The first thing you should do is introduce yourself. Write your name on the board or display it on the class screen. The first day in a new class can be as stressful for the students as for the teacher, so remembering the basics and putting everyone at ease is important.
6. Tell Your Students What to Expect
Don’t assume your students know what to expect of the first few weeks in class. Explain to them what their expected learning outcomes are, how you’ll teach, what you’ll teach, and when. Ask them for feedback to check their understanding. Get their consent, either verbally or by signing a simple form as a binding classroom contract.
7. Explain How You Will Assess Their Progress
Tell your students which work you’ll test them on, what tests you require them to do, and when they’ll get their results. Clarify that your responsibility is to teach, and theirs is to learn. Give them a few minutes to air any concerns they have and answer their individual questions.
2. Explain the Rules
8. Discover What They Already Know
3. Make it Personal
9. Explain the School Resources
4. Let the Students Introduce Each Other
10. Set Clear Boundaries
Set the ground rules early. Let your students know what you expect of In any class, there will be a range of abilities and levels of achievement. Any teaching or discipline is better once it’s personalized. Make sure you It’s useful to let your students know what wider resources are available in learn your students’ names as soon as possible. Putting names to faces will school to support their learning. Introduce them to the library, the IT room, also remind you that your class comprises individuals, each with their own where the bathroom is, and make sure they understand which resources they specific abilities and needs. can access freely and which need authorization or supervision. This is a great way to “break the ice” and build a sense of community in the classroom. Give your students two minutes, no more, to find out a little about the person next to them. Just their name and a favorite hobby, movie, TV show, book, or pet will be fine. Then have each student introduce the other to the class. This way, no one has to talk about themselves in front of everyone else. It’s also a great opportunity for you to learn names.
Throughout your first day in the classroom, you should not only explain the boundaries of acceptable behavior, but enforce them, too. Clarify that you have your eye on things and you won’t ignore any misdemeanor. Don’t shout and don’t get into arguments with students. If you’ve made the ground rules clear at the outset, then enforcing those rules should be straightforward. It can feel overwhelming taking a class for the first time. But there’s a lot 5. Share Your Passion you can do to get the class off to a great start. If you are confident, fair, and Nothing establishes a good learning environment better than knowing firm, you’ll gain the respect and cooperation of your pupils and develop a why it’s important to learn something. eptember is back-to-school time for most students, parents, and teachers—time to get back into the rhythm of homework, carpool lines, and parent-teacher conferences. But what if you’re a teacher who decided to not go back to school this year? Or a soon-to-be education graduate who’s looking for non-teaching career opportunities? The good news is you don’t have to leave the education field to find a fulfilling job outside the classroom. Consider one of the following career options.
(702) 455-4565 • www.clarkcountynv.gov We actively seek those candidates for employment who are competent in their subject area and who are open to continual personal, professional, and spiritual growth.
School counselor
What it is: School counselors work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators to help students succeed by providing services such as career planning, character education, violence prevention, and addressing social and emotional development needs. You may like this job if: You’re passionate about the non-academic wrap-around services, conditions, and systems that can affect a student’s ability to succeed. What people are saying about it: After six years as a preschool and elementary school teacher, Lital Ehrlich started a two-year master’s program in school counseling at the University of Maryland this fall. Ehrlich said she was starting to feel burnt out as a teacher but still wanted to work in education. She realized that one of the aspects of teaching she most enjoyed was working with kids in small groups or one on one, listening to them talk about their issues, and helping to identify and address what may be blocking them from succeeding. That realization “pointed me in the direction of school counseling,” Ehrlich recalled. She said she looks forward to “growing my toolkit” through the school counseling program and using her new skills to help change the overall school system and advocate for families and students who don’t have as strong of a voice in schools.
Working at an Education-related Social Impact Organization
What it is: It depends on the kind of organization you join as well as what your role will be. Some organizations give grants to schools and community organizations focused on education, while others work on education policy or work with children in a nonclassroom setting, such as tutoring or mentoring. Most organizations offer a variety of roles, such as development, communications and marketing, programming, direct service, or research.

You may like this job if: You want to make change on a larger scale, beyond one classroom or one student. What people are saying about it: Sara Kirschner found a great fit at Higher Achievement, a nonprofit organization that provides middle school students with yearround academic training, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities. Kirschner landed at Higher Achievement in 2014, two years after leaving her elementary school teaching job for something completely unrelated: a volunteer management position at The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “Ultimately, I always wanted to return to education, but I really needed some time away from the classroom to evaluate what I wanted to do,” Kirschner said. Kirschner’s time at The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society also gave her skills that directly transferred to her first role at Higher Achievement: managing volunteer mentors for the DC metro area. From there, she became curriculum and training manager for all four locations (Baltimore, MD; Pittsburgh, PA; Richmond, VA; and the Washington, DC, area), and most recently she worked as an independent contractor designing a new Higher Achievement math curriculum after taking time off to have a baby. Now Kirschner is

What it is: Designing courses and modules for instructors to use in the classroom or for self-guided learning. You may like this job if: You enjoy the intellectual aspects of teaching, such as choosing the right teaching approach to aid someone’s learning. What people are saying about it: Andrew Ratner recently started working as an instructional designer for a government contracting firm after teaching high school English for eight years in Washington, DC. He designs digital learning modules, which has converted him from being a “technology agnostic” teacher to someone who now sees learning opportunities in almost any technology. Ratner described his work as similar to being a teacher but without the classroom. For him, getting out of the classroom has allowed him to spend more time with his two-year-old daughter and listen to music (a passion that had fallen by the wayside as teaching became all-consuming).

Harris County Department of Education is a fast-growing tax-assisted organization serving school districts and the public in locations throughout the Houston, Texas area. We offer an array of benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, Teacher Retirement System and Social Security.
What it is: A museum educator provides formal or informal learning in a museum, whether that’s by organizing workshops and lectures, speaking to school groups on a field trip, or developing worksheets or creative materials such as scavenger hunts. You may like this job if: You’re passionate about art, history, or another common museum topic, and you want to work directly with people to help them discover the same excitement about it. Also, teaching experience is helpful but not essential, so a career as a museum educator could be a good place to start if you’re not interested in classroom teaching.

What people are saying about it: Dena Rapoport, a museum educator on the National Gallery of Art’s Family Programs and Adult Workshops Team, said she chose this field because it allows her to share her love of art history (she has undergraduate and graduate degrees in the subject) with the public, face to face. Most of the National Gallery of Art’s family programs happen on the weekends and involve an interactive experience in the gallery, followed by a hands-on art activity inspired by what the participants have seen. Rapoport spends the weekdays preparing for upcoming programs by researching works of art, planning lessons, and spending time in the galleries to try to put herself in the shoes of museum visitors. “A museum is a site for unexpected learning opportunities,” Rapoport said. “If I can serve in any way as a conduit towards those moments of exploration, wonder, excitement, reflection—that for me is very powerful.” Article provided by www.idealistcareers.org Find, Land, Love, and Grow in Your Social-Impact Career

But many jobs also exist in many smaller firms. Typically, new hires start as a staff accountant, then advance to audit manager, then tax manager and, eventually, if they can maintain the tough working schedule for many years, a partner in the firm.
Finding Job Opportunities
Financial jobs exist at almost every company in almost every industry. There are two ways to find openings—online and offline—and it’s a good idea to use both methods. Keep in mind that financial jobs are highly specialized, so generic job boards are not the best places to seek such positions. When looking offline, specialized executive recruiters (aka headhunters) can be excellent resources for both financial job opportunities and career advice. Your university’s alumni association can also be very helpful by putting you in touch with industry insiders who are willing to provide some insight and sometimes job leads. Industry conferences and other networking events are also great places to look
for financial jobs. Concerning networking, never forget the value of personal interaction—everyone you meet could know someone who knows of a job opening. Keep your avenues of communication open by following up in a professional, yet personal way, such as a thank-you email or forwarding an article of common interest.
Picking the Right Direction
It is always wise to consider the direction of the market before seeking a financial job. To effectively pursue jobs with the highest probability of success, you must measure the demand for the position. Different financial jobs require different skills and present vastly different work environments, so it’s wise to select one that aligns with your long-term interests and abilities. Someone with solid interpersonal skills, for example, might do well as a financial advisor, while someone who enjoys crunching numbers might do better in public accounting. Do the research first to discover your options. The time spent uncovering the most interesting possibilities can be time saved working in a job that just doesn’t fit. Why Diversity Matters in Accounting

ccountants know how to identify a shortfall on a financial report. And, today, they’re also identifying shortfalls in their profession. Minorities made up roughly 25% of the U.S. population in 2017, but only about 12% of CPAs, according to a hiring trends report by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA). In another 2017 survey, the AICPA found only 22% of CPA firm partners were women. These numbers should be cause for alarm, as there’s a proven link between workforce diversity and the bottom line. “There are a multitude of reasons why the accounting profession should focus on diversity and inclusion,” the AICPA notes. Those reasons include changing demographics in the workforce and client base. “It is imperative that we attract and value diverse talent and enable that talent to attract and value diverse clients.” Education can help open the door for more people — of all backgrounds, genders and ethnicities — to enter the accounting field. In fact, education trends may indicate the industry is already starting to embrace change. The AICPA’s hiring trends report found that women represented nearly 50% of all enrollments in bachelor’s and master’s programs in accounting. Minorities accounted for about 30%. Accounting programs available 100% online, such as those offered at Florida Tech and New England College, can benefit busy professionals because they offer flexibility and convenience.
The Business Case for Diversity
Page 27
The connection between diversity and business outcomes has been a topic of study since the 1990s, and the consensus is that companies with more diverse workforces see better results. McKinsey reports that companies with gender and minority
diversity outperform those with less diversity — by 21% for gender diversity and 33% for minority diversity. The message is clear, according to the report: “The penalty for not being diverse on both measures persists.”

Diversity brings a spectrum of viewpoints, thinking styles and backgrounds into an organization, which may support better decisions and spur creativity. At the same time, individuals who make up a diverse workforce may be able to relate to a wide range of clients — potentially vital for accounting firms that require employees to foster relationships that generate new business. Other benefits, according to Harvard Business Review, are increased employee engagement and retention.
Building a Diverse Workforce
Diversity doesn’t just happen. It needs nurturing, encouragement, resources, time and effort. Here are four ways to get started, according to Business Administration Information: Build a business case for diversity. This shouldn’t just look at how diversity might impact the bottom line. It should also consider how diversity fits into your organization’s mission, goals and social responsibility. Get senior leadership involved. Accounting firm partners must reinforce and emphasize the need for diversity. Promote your efforts. Let your employees and prospective hires know what your organization is doing to promote diversity. he healthcare sector is booming, due to a growing population that will require increasing care with age. Baby Boomers—those born between 1946 and 1964—are retiring at rate of thousands per day. Meanwhile, the Pew Research Center documents that Millennials (ages 23 to 38) currently make up the largest portion of the U.S. labor force, having surpassed Generation X in 2017. That correlates to about 35 percent of the workforce in the height of the childbearing years. With large segments of the population entering the elder years and another comprising growing families, health professionals will be in demand to meet these increasing needs. Fortunately, there is no shortage of promising healthcare careers. Physical Therapist – Physical therapy tops this health career list because it is a lucrative position with tremendous growth expected in future years. It also offers a relatively flexible and comfortable lifestyle. As of May 2017, the median annual wage for physical therapists was $86,850 and demand for these health professionals is expected to grow by 28 percent in the decade preceding 2026. Unlike some other health professionals, physical therapists are often able to make their own hours, choose their clients, and are more likely to be selfemployed. Dental Hygienist – Between 2016 and 2026, more than 40,900 new dental hygienist jobs are expected to be available. That represents an impressive growth rate of 20 percent, which is considered much faster than average. Dental hygienists earn
a median annual wage of $74,070, and typically hold at least associate’s degrees. Physician Assistant – Not to be confused with medical assistants, physician assistants are highly trained health workers with advanced degrees who work closely with medical doctors to diagnose and treat illness. In 2017, the median salary for a physician assistant in the U.S. was $104,860, helping to make this challenging career one of the most lucrative in healthcare. Nurse Practitioner – In many states, nurse practitioners are licensed to do much of what physician can do. As the demand for healthcare services increases over the next decade, the demand for nurse practitioners is expected to increase 31 percent. With a median salary of $110,930, this career is even more lucrative than that of physician assistants, particularly for in-demand specializations. Physician – Becoming a physician carries a great deal of prestige and requires a significant investment of time and financial resources. But the tangible rewards in this field are also pronounced. The median salary for a physician in 2017 was more than $208,000 annually. It should be no surprise that this is among the top healthcare careers available. Please note that most physicians require 11 to 15 years of postsecondary schooling and training, and tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. Registered Nurse – As of 2017, there were nearly three million registered nurse jobs in the U.S. and that number is expected to swell 15 percent through the year 2026. Nurses enjoy a median
