have a number of friends who are currently in the process of "decluttering" their homes. This is largely because of the very trendy Marie Kondo book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. My friend Teri told me about pulling all of the clothes she owns out of her closet and chest of drawers and piling them on the floor. She explains, "You then pick up each item, one at a time, asking yourself, 'Does this item bring me joy?' If the answer is yes, you can keep it! If the answer is no, this does not bring me joy, you have to get rid of it. It's so simple, isn't it? In the end, you only have clothes that bring you joy!" Yes, that sounds simple. And it makes me wonder about all of the other things in my life that could be evaluated that way. Imagine if everything around you brought you joy! I started thinking about work. Overall, yes, my work brings me joy. But my office chair? No. Definitely does not bring me joy and now it's on the list for donation. Time to go shopping for a new one! We spend so many hours at our jobs that this should be an area in life that brings us joy. If it doesn't, perhaps it's time to look for work that does. So today I challenge you to ask yourself...Does your work bring you joy? And how about that office chair?

CREATE A CAREER THAT MATTERS

America’s natural gas industry is growing fast. With new technologies and new products it’s leading the charge to a cleaner, greener future. We’re PGW – the country’s biggest municipal natural gas company – and we’re building a better energy economy for all.

Celebrating Disability Inclusion for More than 70 Years

R

eflecting a commitment to a robust and competitive American labor force, the 2019 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) theme is “The Right Talent, Right Now.” Observed each October, NDEAM celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents. Signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson in 1945, the Smith-Fess Act (also known as the Civilian Vocational Rehabilitation Act) establishes the Vocational Rehabilitation program for Americans with disabilities. It is modeled on an earlier law that provided for the rehabilitation of World War I veterans with disabilities. Today, we celebrate the disabled in the workplace for the entire month of October. However, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) activities don’t have to end in October. NDEAM also offers an opportunity to launch year-round activities that highlight the importance of including disability in all of your organization’s diversity endeavors. Doing so delivers numerous internal and external benefits to employers:

Ten Ways to Foster the NDEAM Spirit Year-Round

Looking for ideas on promoting a disability-friendly workplace? Below are 10 ways to carry out the spirit of NDEAM all year long.

1. G ather Ideas from Your Corporate Disability Employee Resource Group

Does your organization have a disability-related Employee Resource Group (ERG)? Start your planning efforts there. The members of disability ERGs (sometimes called Business Resource Groups or Affinity Groups) are well-positioned to help you brainstorm activities, speakers, and topics to include in your awareness-building efforts. ERGs can also serve as a talent pipeline by referring qualified job seekers with disabilities to your organization.

2. Hold an NDEAM Kickoff Event in October

NDEAM is a fitting time to formally launch disability employment awareness activities — and set the pace for 11 more months

Make today the day you make your move to PGW.

of activities designed to promote disability inclusion. Kickoff events can range from large-scale, multi-day celebrations to small brown bag lunches about disability issues. Whatever approach you choose, there are tools and planning resources to assist you in your efforts. Each year, you can use the new NDEAM theme to frame your kick-off event and influence year-round activities.

3. H ost a Disability Mentoring Day

Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) promotes career development for youth with disabilities through hands-on programs, job shadowing and ongoing mentoring. The nationwide observance is the third Wednesday of each October, but employers may choose to host events any day of the year. The American Association of People with Disabilities offers information to assist you in implementing a Disability Mentoring Day. Take advantage of this easy way to connect with great talent while providing young people with disabilities valuable career experience.

4. S ponsor a “Lunch and Learn” Series About Disability Issues

One easy way to maintain NDEAM momentum is to host a series of monthly “lunch and learn” events for employees. Just schedule the date and place, enlist internal or external presenters, and invite employees to come to learn about a range of disability-related subjects. Topics can often be suggested by your disability-related ERG (if you have one) and can include everything from “Communicating with Job Seekers with Disabilities,” to “Creating Accessible PDF Documents,” to “Managing Diabetes at Work.” Such events are a great way to educate staff about disability issues in an informal setting. And don’t forget to survey attendees after each session to gather feedback and solicit new topic ideas.

5. P rovide Volunteer Opportunities to Your Employees

Smart employers know the benefits of employee volunteerism, which include strong team engagement, leadership development and more. In the spirit of NDEAM, why not sponsor opportunities for your staff to volunteer at local organizations that prepare people with disabilities for work? In communities across the nation, there are often opportunities to volunteer your time reviewing resumes, staging mock-interviews and providing guidance on how to dress for success. Connecting your employees to these opportunities is a great way to both give back and raise awareness. And these activities just might help you source talented job candidates with disabilities for your organization, as well.

6. D isplay Posters Promoting Disability Inclusion

NDEAM is a great time to freshen up walls and bulletin boards in your lobby, break rooms and common areas with disability employment posters – but there’s no reason to take them down when October ends! Start by putting up the current year’s NDEAM poster, which is available in English and Spanish. Additional display materials include the Campaign for Disability Employment’s poster series. You might also consider highlighting specific disability recognition months such as Heart Health Month, Epilepsy Awareness Month and Brain Injury Awareness Month to keep the pace going throughout the year. And with numerous, free posters to choose from, you can keep your displays fresh and dynamic throughout the year. The benefit of this practice? Employees who are consistently reminded that their organization is disability-friendly may be more likely to refer job-seeking friends with disabilities to your HR department. In addition, those with disabilities themselves may be more likely to self-identify as such.

If your company offers employee development and training opportunities, consider adding American Sign Language (ASL) classes to your catalog of offerings. 7. O ffer American Sign Language Training Classes to Your Employees

If your company offers employee development and training opportunities, consider adding American Sign Language (ASL) classes to your catalog of offerings. Such classes aren’t just fun; they teach employees new skills while reinforcing relationships between hearing employees and those who are deaf. On-site classes can be taught by representatives from local or national sign language organizations, while external classes are often available at local colleges and universities. This professional development practice can

serve to strengthen internal communications for your employees who are deaf while bolstering your ability to recruit talented job candidates who are deaf or hard of hearing.

8. I nterview Students with Disabilities During Campus Recruiting Trips

If your company holds recruiting visits to college campuses, be sure to have your recruiters contact each institution’s Career Services Office and Disability Services Office to give them a heads up. Let them know that you’re interested in interviewing job candidates with disabilities and brief them on the types of positions available. Regularly meeting with juniors and seniors with disabilities during on-campus recruiting trips is a great way to build a pipeline of talented job candidates for your organization.

YOU’RE AT YOUR BEST WHEN YOU’RE

9. Host a Disability 101 Event for Employees

One of the best educational events you can provide your employees, during NDEAM or any time of the year, is a “Disability Employment 101” primer. And thanks to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), such events are easy to coordinate. JAN offers a series of free, ready-todeliver training modules on a variety of disability-related topics. Titled “Just In Time,” the series can be used to educate your staff members with hiring and managerial responsibilities about issues related to applicants and employees with disabilities.

10. Incorporate Disability Into Your Onboarding Processes

A formal onboarding process helps new employees acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviors they need to become effective members of your organization. As such, it’s also a perfect opportunity to educate new employees on your company’s policies and practices related to disability inclusion – from reasonable accommodation procedures to your commitment to equal employment opportunity. Such practices will help new employees feel good about the organization they now serve and may encourage self-identification among people with hidden disabilities. What’s more, it may also make them more likely to refer their job-seeking friends with disabilities to your organization. Article provided by the U.S. Department of Labor dol.gov

As

unemployment rates have sunk to historic lows, organizations have struggled to maintain and build their workforces. There were 1 million more job openings in the United States than there were unemployed people to fill them as of spring 2019. A campaign celebrated each October since the end of World War II spotlights an oftenoverlooked segment of workers who could help close this employment gap. National Disability Employment Awareness Month highlights the role people with disabilities play in the U.S. workforce. Disability inclusion initiatives could add 10.7 million workers to the U.S. talent pool, according to research by the consulting firm Accenture in partnership with the American Association of People with Disabilities and the nonprofit Disability:IN. Beyond the numbers and annual events, the advantages of hiring and retaining workers with physical and mental disabilities are evident every day.

Better Products and Services

Employees with disabilities bring perspectives about accessibility, potentially providing their organizations with a competitive edge in product and service design. An employee with limited mobility might provide insight into how a store or office is designed, perhaps recommending wider pathways to accommodate wheelchairs. An employee with impaired vision might suggest improvements for software development teams, such as audio features. Google’s Central Accessibility Team, which includes people with and without disabilities, works on projects such as: ChromeVox, a screen reader; Lookout, an app that helps the visually impaired understand their surroundings; and Voice Access, a feature that allows people to use a smartphone without touching the screen. “Making accessibility a core consideration from the earliest stage of product design results in better outcomes that improve lives,” wrote Eve Andersson, director of accessibility engineering for Google. “Inventions like the typewriter, books on tape, closed captions, voice-enabled TV and voice controls were all initially meant to focus on people with a disability, and found a much broader use case. This goes to show that the accessibility problems of today can lead to the technology breakthroughs of tomorrow.”

Better Productivity

The Institute for Corporate Productivity found that workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities ranked high for dependability, engagement, motivation and attendance. According to the institute’s report, 50% of companies that hired workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities had a positive experience, with an additional 23% saying the experience exceeded expectations. A 2018 article in Inc. noted that diversity and inclusion initiatives — which can include

November 2019

disability inclusion — are an “often underestimated and overlooked” way to fuel performance by bringing together people with different working styles.

Better Financial Performance

Engaging workers with disabilities can play a major role in a successful diversity and inclusion strategy. And a comprehensive strategy can drive financial performance, according to Jameel Rush, an adjunct professor at Villanova University. “Inclusion makes business sense,” Rush said.

Page 9

The Accenture report, Getting to Equal: The Disability Inclusion Advantage, found that companies identified as disability champions outperform other companies in revenue and income. In addition: Disability champions were twice as likely to have higher shareholder returns. Companies that improved their disability initiatives were four times as likely to outperform their peer groups. Another financial benefit: Organizations with employees with disabilities could qualify for tax incentives such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and the Barrier Removal Tax Deduction.

Getting Started

An article on the HR People + Strategy Blog, part of the Society for Human Resource Management’s Executive Network, identified workplace improvements to better accommodate employees with disabilities: “Physical accessibility should be of topmost concern, followed by adoption of assistive technology, continued training of employees and consistent monitoring.” Awareness is important for all employees, the article notes, not just those with disabilities. “An aware workforce is also an empowered workforce. For disabled employees to be fully integrated into a workplace, it is essential that all employees are familiar with the affirmed commitment of their organization to being disabled-friendly.” One of the challenges employers may face in championing inclusion initiatives is identifying job candidates. The Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, maintains a comprehensive list of state and local resources and job posting sites. Exciting Career Options in Nursing L

Page 13

by N.P. Lee

ooking into nursing as a career choice? Or maybe you already are a nurse and are looking for a new niche in nursing? Many nurses start off in a hospital to get one to two years of mixed medicalsurgical nursing experiences under their belt. This kind of experience cannot be underrated. It allows a nurse to experience various types of patients and conditions so that they can see if there is an area of interest to specialize in. Read further to explore five areas of nursing that look at specialty opportunities.

Mental Health Nursing

Ranging from working with individuals in an acute care hospital inpatient setting to a community-based program, mental health nursing offers exciting opportunities for passionate and empathetic nurses. Supporting patients with diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders, to name a few, this field employs nurses who are committed to advocating for those with mental health conditions. The specialty requires either extra training on the job or some employers may require a specialty certificate in mental health. In larger, urban centers the option to work in pediatric mental health with kids may also be an option.

Obstetrical Nursing

Although from a distance obstetrical nursing may look like the ‘fun’ way to be a nurse with proud new parents and cooing new babies, there is another side to this specialty that requires a special level of strength, both physically and mentally. An obstetrical (OB) nurse needs to enjoy supporting families through the birthing process while also being on guard to be an emergency nurse if clinical issues arise and to be a surgical nurse to work with C-section deliveries. A specialty program in perinatal nursing is typically required to prepare nurses on how to manage emergencies prenatally, during labor and during the immediate post-partum period for both mom and infant.

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

As an advanced practice role in nursing, an NP works autonomously under their own license. An NP can assess, diagnose, order tests and prescribe medications. This job requires successful certification after a rigorous program that is usually two to three years in length. After this is completed, a registered nurse may then apply for a new license as a nurse practitioner. Given the increased scope of practice involved, most programs will require that a registered nurse has completed a minimum amount of work hours, such as a two-year, fulltime equivalent, before applying for the program. However, often the more experience the better in order to prepare to take on this role with its increased level of autonomy. When applying for a program one will need to choose their specialty interest as an NP. This can range from primary care to acute care pediatrics, with numerous specialties in between depending on where you live in.

Travel nurse abroad

Opportunities throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand and the UK are limitless and can pay handsomely. However, the paperwork can be cumbersome. It can take roughly up to one year to get all of the logistics in order from transferring of educational requirements, licensure verifications, certifications validated, security checks completed, and payment arranged. Typically this all needs to be done before most travel agencies will work with you. Countries will vary on whether further tests need to be written before obtaining the license. For example, for a foreigner to work in the US the NCLEX exam must be successfully taken. To work in the UK, a course for international nurses is now required before a license will be provided. Once a license is received, it is then time to select a travel nurse agency to work with to find a job. Agencies will vary in their wages, housing support, medical and recruitment bonuses so review carefully. Eventually, a job interview will be arranged over the phone or Skype and then hopefully a job offer is received. The job offer is typically required before applying to customs for the appropriate visa. It may be easier for young adults doing this who can apply for working visas, for example in Australia, and then find a job once in the country. Although a lot of planning is involved, the opportunity to work abroad and experience new adventures is unforgettable. The above offers only a small glimpse into the many nursing specialty options available these days. There are several more out there that help keep a career in nursing exciting and refreshing for all the years ahead. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

ovember 11th is Veterans Day. To a lot of us, it means no school, lots of doorbuster sales and, hopefully, a day off of work. The meaning of Veterans Day can be of little insight to those who have no family members or friends who have served time in the service. But, those who do may see the importance of today a little clearer. We have supported our loved ones through their times of self-sacrifice and loyalty, as well as the most demanding, dangerous, terrifying and noble times. Their acts of valor trickle into their civilian lives, and we dedicate this day to them. Today takes us away from our daily protests and brings into focus whom we should thank for all of our freedom. In honor of the veterans, with a very special recognition to my father and brother who sacrificed their years and served proudly in the US Army, here are five valuable lessons only a strong-willed veteran can teach us civilians about life:

The 3 D’s: Determination, Discipline & Dedication. There are few, if any, jobs in which ability alone is sufficient.

Those words, spoken by William B. Given Jr., help emphasize the need for the three D’s for a successful life. To be determined is to know you are capable of doing the task at hand. Regardless of a soldier’s insecurity, he or she is determined to be of value and of service to America.

Regardless of the pain, sweat and tears that come to a soldier in order to serve and survive in the harshest circumstances, discipline is what drives him or her forward. Lastly, dedication is what gives meaning to the reason solders do what they vowed to do. A soldier is dedicated to serving his or her country through thick and thin; a soldier is dedicated to freedom. With the three D’s, your journey through wherever you have found yourself becomes more meaningful and successful.

Work as A Team.

There have been many circumstances in which, in order to suffice and sometimes live, soldiers have had to appreciate diversity and assemble a team of very diverse individuals. They have gone through very traumatic and life-changing experiences together, which has taught them the importance of a team. When it comes to life-and-death situations, external issues take the backburner, and people must come together to accomplish whatever needs to be done. Team work is a building block to a successful life in the professional, personal or educational level.

Learn to Work Under Stress.

A veteran is someone who, at one point, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount up to and including his or her life. Imagine the stresses of a battlefield and making quick decisions with incomplete

information with enemies at every corner hunting for a quick victory. There is no time to stress over these life or death situations. Soldiers learn to analyze, plan for the best result and execute it. Take this lesson into your daily life when you are up to your ears in debt, or when you feel there’s not enough time in the day to finish your work. It could be worse; stop agonizing over it and make a plan.

The Value of Our Freedom.

Not everyone in this world has the luxury of living without fear. Imagine the fear and anguish people feel where bombs are flying overhead, close to their homes. Or, how about the countries in which the desire for education is reprimanded and confiscated from those who seek it? There are people out there who don’t have the right to make the simple decisions we take for granted and make for ourselves. We overlook our blessings as Americans, sometimes, and hearing it from a veteran is the most valuable wake-up call. Veterans sacrifice everything to ensure our country continues to be “The Land of the Free.”

Embrace Change; It’s Not The Worst Thing in The World.

Change is inevitable in the military world; vets learn to cope with it and learn from it. Embrace change, even if it is outside of your comfort zone. The most successful people have learned to overcome this obstacle and actually use it to their advantage. Soldiers are constantly learning to cope with change of plan in missions. Instead of obsessing over change and trying to resist it, they learn how to change gears quickly and respond to change in an effective way. We will all face drastic change throughout our entire lives. The way we respond to change is what makes the difference.

Appreciate Your Life and Where You Are Now.

The hardest part in a soldier’s life is leaving his or her life and family behind to do what he or she vowed to do as part of the US military. Soldiers have left behind unborn babies, unfinished business, responsibilities and spouses to protect and serve our country. Some will return; others will not. That dire uncertainty fills the air with uncertainty and sadness for their families. The best thing you can learn from a veteran is to appreciate where you are at this moment in life. You have the ability to determine where life takes you. Most of that freedom wouldn’t be ours if it wasn’t for the men and women who devote their lives to make America what it is. All of the above lessons come from the men and women I have met who have taught me how precious life is and how important it is to handle things in the most positive and effective way. I’ve listened to their stories, followed their pictures on social media and seen what they left behind to fight. I’ve been inspired to live my life with the mindset of a soldier, a marine, an airmen or a seaman. This day is for you; we salute you for your bravery, your perseverance and your passion for our country. Again, a very special “thank you” is due to my own father and brother who devoted many years of their lives to the US Army. You are my heroes, and I thank you for all you have done for this country.

What gets in the way?

There are several factors that can delay finding your niche. Among these could be a salary issue, a preconceived notion of what others expect or simply how we envision ourselves. Let your natural tendencies take hold. Stop struggling and resisting. Follow your dream. Do what you love, and the money will come. Remember that most, if not all, obstacles to success exist only in our own minds.

Make decisions

Get off the fence and get moving. Precious time is wasted while you obsess about which degree you should get or whether or not to take a job. As a result, you squander time in a state of indecision, which is nothing more than inactivity. It’s just another excuse to stay put in your nursing career. On the other hand, don’t act rashly. Try the following actions: • Take time to collect pertinent information. • Make a pros-and-cons list. • Discuss the situation with a trusted friend. • Write in your journal.

Let your natural tendencies take hold. Stop struggling and resisting. Follow your dream. Do what you love, and the money will come. Then move forward. Often, we don’t make decisions about our future because we’re afraid we’ll make the wrong one and have to live with the consequences. Remember, there are no wrong decisions, only bigger lessons to learn. It’s important to try things, experience life and see what you’re capable of doing.

Take calculated risks

No one ever said the pursuit of true happiness would be easy. Often the path to your heart’s desire requires taking risks. Stepping out of your comfort zone, making decisions and feeling uncertain are all things none of us relish. But they go with the territory. If you don’t feel anxious, then you’re not challenging yourself. The bigger the goal, the bigger the fear. But once you’ve accomplished something, overcome a fear or mastered a new skill, you’ll be gratified, exhilarated and further along in your journey. Have I finally found my niche in nursing? For now, yes. But there still are a lot of corners for me to turn. I’m still a traveler. Who knows where the road will lead me. Success is a journey, not a destination. Start the journey, and the right path eventually will reveal itself to you. Article provided by Nurse.com by Relias

iversity has been quite a hot topic among Silicon Valley and the business world in general. Everyone from Hillary Clinton to Reverend Al Sharpton has criticized the fact that most of the upper levels of businesses - mostly tech companies such as Google, Twitter, and Facebook are predominately white and male. Many people wonder why there aren’t enough women and minorities in these fields and if hiring managers are discriminating against those groups. Despite this, two-thirds of CEOs care about creating a diverse workforce. But diversity is more than just a convenient thing to have in order to look good to onlookers and critics. Having a diverse workforce can actually help companies in ways they’ve never imagined. For example, a study by Catalyst found that companies with at least three women on their board of directors had a 53% better return on equity, 42% better return on sales, and 66% better return on invested capital when compared to companies with less than three women on their board of directors. Furthermore, having a diverse workplace helps increase creativity and innovation. Stanford Graduate School of Education professor Anthony Lising Antonio conducted an experiment to test how racial differences play a role in group

Apply at discussions. During the study, participants were divided into small groups to talk about a social issue. Many participants told by the researchers which opinions they should tell to the group. The researchers found that a black person who read a dissenting opinion to a group of white people had their opinion seen as more novel and thought-provoking compared to when a white person read the exact same opinion to a different group of white participants. In other words, hearing a dissenting opinion from someone of a different demographic can have a very powerful impact, regardless of how valid the opinion is. These aforementioned studies prove that diversity can be beneficial for the both the companies and the people that work for them. With all this evidence and the fact that so many important figures in the business world claim to champion diversity, why would it still be a problem? The fact is that this issue goes far deeper than most people would care to imagine. Luckily, there are many things that companies can do to help their companies become more diverse. Here are a few ideas: 1. Use blind hiring. The main problem with diversity is that most people don’t even recognize their own biases. Even someone who claims to be Continued on page 26

With baby boomers retiring, a flood of new openings will be available to younger workers who have the ambition to take the next step in their manufacturing careers.

T

he manufacturing industry is not one of the fastest-growing sectors of the US economy. In fact, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts little to no growth from now through 2028. However, the workforces at many production facilities are aging and approximately 2.7 million baby boomers are expected to retire by 2025. This creates a flood of new openings in many senior positions that can be filled by younger workers who have the ambition to take the next step in their manufacturing careers. Read on for advice that will help you move up the ladder!

1. Attend a technical undergraduate program, but follow it up with a business-related graduate degree.

If your goal is to become a manager or executive, getting an MBA will be worth your while. This post-graduate education will give you the skills you need to run a department, division, or entire company. More focused technical training is essential to begin your career, but once you’ve gotten your foot in the door you’ll need to broaden your horizons and acquire the business skills necessary to take on additional duties.

2. Don’t just find a mentor; get a team of advisors.

A decades-old Harvard Business Review study showed that executives who received some form of mentoring earned more money earlier in their careers and attributed much of their success to this mentor relationship. However, there has been a shift recently toward “mentoring by committee.” Essentially, why have one mentor when you could have three or four? The benefits of having a more senior member of your company supporting you and rooting for your success are increased when you have close relationships with multiple individuals.

3. Deliver—employees who get results are usually the first to be promoted.

The future of your career begins now at: MediacomCable.com/Careers Or text “Mediacom” to 97211 EOE m/f/d/v

Being able to identify specific ways you have enhanced operations or positively impacted the company’s bottom line enables you to make a solid case for promotion. One area where professionals in manufacturing have an easier time than other fields is quantifying their achievements. Since everything from yield to product quality, defects, customer returns, and on-time shipping are tracked so closely in a production environment, you should have no problem compiling a list of measurable accomplishments to wow your superiors.

4. Build rapport with your boss and other senior leaders.

As mentioned in the second item on our list, it’s important to make connections with the higher-ups at your company. Beyond pursuing a mentor-protégé association or building

a team of advisors, you should develop a great working relationship with your immediate supervisor. They will ultimately be the initial gatekeeper that can block your professional growth or make your journey up the corporate ladder a bit smoother. Seek their counsel, discover what makes them tick, and use performance reviews to go deeper than simply discussing your work—find out how you can help your manager succeed.

5. Volunteer to help others.

Embracing the “other duties” your role entails is a great way to separate yourself from your peers. Asking for additional tasks and taking on projects others would prefer not to tackle is one way to show that you’re prepared to take the next step in your career—and that you’re up to any challenge. It can also prove that you’re a team player, which is a characteristic many managers look for when considering associates for positions with more responsibilities.

6. Never stop learning.

This advice applies to any professional, but it’s especially important in manufacturing where technology is constantly evolving and new techniques are being formulated and implemented to continuously improve operations. If you don’t keep up with industry changes, you will be left behind. Credentials such as a Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Quality Engineer, and many others will also make you more marketable outside of your organization.

If you don’t keep up with industry changes, you will be left behind. 7. Establish a reputation for professionalism.

Becoming a vital member of your organization (and thus, a prime candidate for promotion) means being seen as dependable, cooperative, productive, and helpful. Display the qualities of a leader to show you’re ready for a supervisory role. Asking questions, remaining optimistic in the face of challenges, avoiding complaining, and sharing credit for a job well done are all traits that will endear you to your peers and senior management.

8. Manufacture your own luck.

Don’t sit back and wait for someone else to initiate a project. If you see something that needs to be fixed, jump in and fix it. Study your company’s processes and systems to determine if there are opportunities for improvement and draft a proposal to show senior leadership. You could even take things a step further and prepare a plan that calls for the creation of a new position. And if you find too many obstacles in your career path with your current employer, don’t hesitate to look elsewhere for advancement opportunities in the manufacturing industry. Bulletproof Arguments on Why We Need Diversity in Tech

your office isn’t encouraging diversity and inclusion in the workforce, they’re missing out on all its potential benefits. The connection between workplace diversity and company success has been hotly debated over the past few years, with most minds speaking in favour of building a team with a variety of backgrounds. So how do tech companies build that sought-after workforce diversity? More importantly, how can you convince the skeptics that it’s important to do so? Events like Capital One’s Gift the Code Charity Hackathon, are a great example of the power behind technology to act as the ultimate connector. By bringing together diverse talent, over 150 passionate participants were able to work together to encourage diversity and innovation while creating solutions for charity. When it comes to promoting diversity to your bosses, and other decision-makers, here are a few solid arguments that will work in your favour.

ROI

This is the easiest way to hook leaders in the tech industry: profitability. It’s been widely proven that increased gender diversity means increased ROI. McKinsey, a global management consulting firm that serves a broad mix of private, public and social sector institutions, reported that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15 per cent more likely to outperform against industry medians. According to a recent study by Morgan Stanley, the more diverse companies delivered better returns and were less volatile. So, the more diverse your team is, the more you’ll see this reflected in your bottom line.

One gender, one race, one sexuality. It could mean that some groups’ needs are prioritized, while others are left behind. This is another reason why tech companies need to lead the charge for diversity. Companies like Capital One set an example with events like Gift the Code, a hackathon that takes a diverse group of coders, data scientists, designers and other bright people and puts them together to work on tech-based challenges for charity. It’s a win-win — inclusive, diverse groups, working together in local communities for the greater good. This 40-hour Hackathon took place Friday November 3 to Sunday November 5 at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, with the winners having been announced on the final day.

Culture

We all know culture is an area that tech companies have been praised for, yet have also been heavily criticized for too. Regardless of the obvious, ethical reasons why diversity is important, it’s also important for company culture. Positive culture attracts top talent to the job and helps retain employees. If the tech industry doesn’t work on its culture issue, fewer women and people of ethnically diverse backgrounds will pursue careers in tech industries. Discouraging these groups from pursuing careers in this industry damages everyone involved as a result. The tech industry is the most rapidly growing industry in the world. It has the responsibility to represent and include people from all walks of life, genders, races and sexual orientations — not only for the benefit of these individuals, but the benefit of the industry as a whole. Article first published by NotableLife.com Presented by Capital One

Audience Relatability

To put it succinctly, your audience is diverse, so you need to be, too. If your ideas and your work stem from one group or one demographic, you risk isolating your audience and creating products that don’t address everyone’s needs. That means missing some big wins that could otherwise be in your reach. Without diversity, how can you relate to your massive, diverse audience? You simply can’t.

Innovation

Innovation happens when you have the courage to shift away from the familiar. Diversity brings different thoughts, opinions and experiences to your workplace. When you bring together individuals with different experiences, views and skills, this cross-collaboration and vast knowledge base can lead to something unique and groundbreaking. No great innovation in history happened with a uniform group of people staying within the box.

For the Good of the People

Tech is the future. We are breaking ground in the tech industry and growing at the most rapid rate in history. What happens if this evolution is lead largely by (and the benefits enjoyed by) one portion of the human race?

Most hiring managers wouldn’t have said that they were biased, but when they started instituting a gender-blind hiring process, female musicians ended up making onefourth of the orchestra members.

or many of today’s engineers, the moon landing of 1969 was the inspiration to study the sciences. Dr. Hazel Marie remembers Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon and it ignited her ambition to become an astronaut. When she realized astronauts were all men, she decided to become the first woman astronaut. Living in San Antonio near the Air Force Base, it seemed a natural choice. But as she grew older, she realized that even though she was good in math and science, her path would be a bit different. “When I was a senior in

high school, I was the top in math and science. My advisor said, “You should be an engineer.” I’m like, “Okay.” Dr. Marie was the first person in her family to go to college so she really didn’t know any engineers. Professor Irene BuschVishniac changed that. She was the only female mechanical engineering professor Marie had at UT Austin. “She shaped, not just my decision to become an engineer, but how to be a woman engineer. She was strong. Many of the men in my classes would say to me, ‘You shouldn’t be here,’ which made me want to show them. But Busch-Vishniac inspired me to excel in her class.

I think back about that a lot. She didn’t even teach the area of mechanical engineering that I ended up in, but I look back and her inspiration was key to my junior year, of saying, “I want to be excellent like her.” Marie received her Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering, Mechanical, from the University of Texas in Austin in 1984. From there, she moved to Northeast Ohio with a scholarship from General Motors to work for one of their divisions. She never expected to stay in Ohio, having been born and raised in Texas. She worked at GM for five years before she decided to get her advanced degrees. So after the birth of her first child, she left GM, and started working part-time on her Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, which she received in 1998 from Youngstown State University. When her youngest of three children was four, she decided to pursue her PhD, which she received in 2005 from the University of Akron, which isn’t far from Youngstown.

Marie tells the story of a visit to a middle school for career days. “There were only two girls in the class and I was speaking about engineering in general. After my talk, the teacher came up to me and said, ‘You would not believe what happened before you showed up. All the boys were saying to those two girls, ‘Why are you in here? This is engineering. You shouldn’t be here.’ Then you walked in.’ The teacher watched the boys’ faces and some of them were very surprised. They found out they were wrong, that women can be engineers.” Marie thinks women still combat this prejudice. Of the 11% working in engineering, she notes that YSU graduates about 18 to 20% of that 11% in mechanical engineering. “That doesn’t mean they haven’t moved on to management positions or this or that. For example, I’m not considered in the workforce because I’m in academia. Women in engineering are not necessarily leaving the field, but with only 11%, there are still not enough role models to get even the young males thinking differently.”

“I love STEAM because it brings the arts into it. What I find grabs students interest is the art part of STEAM, because they want to be creative."

“I did my PhD research at NASA Glenn in Cleveland.” While finishing, she started teaching at YSU in 2002, moved to the tenure track in 2005 and has held assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor positions. She is now the chair of the department and has been so for seven years.

Barriers Women in Engineering Face

As a professor, Dr. Marie has seen firsthand the barriers that women in engineering faced and continue to face. “The barriers women encounter are huge,” she notes. “As a professor, I see that today’s students came into this field differently than their parents. Many did not grow up working with their dads on cars, for example, which used to be a major pathway to engineering for men. “Today, the girls are still ridiculed for not knowing something a guy typically knows and they will bully the women with, “Oh, it’s ‘cause you’re a girl.” “Well, no, it’s ‘cause she wasn’t exposed to it like you were.“The perception seems to be that when a woman doesn’t know something, it’s because she’s female. When a guy doesn’t know something it’s just because he hasn’t learned it yet. I see this all the time. There’s definitely a bias there.”

Engineering Challenges in The Workforce

Like other engineers, Marie faced a few engineering challenges when she worked in the traditional workforce. “My biggest challenge as a young engineer was to accept that you aren’t going to always make the right decisions. I’m a perfectionist and the first time I made a really bad decision that affected a large chunk of money, I was devastated. This was when I was in the Packard Electric Division of GM. They’re called Delphi now. They did all the wiring harnesses for under the cars and I was a materials engineer, which meant I knew copper alloys. “That division made the little connectors that connect wire to a part of the harness train. This copper connector has to be bent over in different configurations and it was cracking on tight bends. We did some analysis and I suggested to my boss that we do half hard instead of full hard. He agreed, of course, it wasn’t just me making the decision. “We brought in all this strip metal of a half hard copper alloy and tested them. There was no crack on the tight bend. We sent it to Mexico where they were assembling the wire harnesses. But the travel conditions affected those connectors. By the time the Mexico plant received the box, these half

hard copper alloys had deformed and held their deformed shape. They weren’t bouncing back. We had a bunch of copper alloys that were messed up. “What I learned is that whether you’re male or female, you are going to make mistakes and that you’re not doing your job probably if you never make a mistake. The challenge is to know how to back up, fix it, not walk away from it, not cower from it. You have to conquer it and resolve it. You have to resolve it by knowing that this is going to happen, but that you can fix this. I think that is the hardest thing, especially for high achieving students. They’re in school. They’re making the highest grades or whatever and then they go out in the work force and it’s not quite the same. It’s a bit messy. It’s very hard for our young twentysomething males to learn this lesson. It’s hard for anybody, though, to admit they made a mistake.

good to bring in a junior female engineer who had similar issues with a freshman or sophomore student and show them the other end. I try to do the full circle that way. As part of the STEAM opportunity, Marie has done something different. “We have an industrial engineering course in my department. I invited junior and senior mechanical engineering students to take

Whether it’s a custom brace or custom implant, or dental implants. 3D printing is already associated with the medical field, which is a helping field. I am seeing young women just fascinated with it, even more so than the males. Engineering is absolutely a helping field, but it hasn’t been seen that way. If the helping aspect of engineering is promoted more, then I think we will see more women becoming engineers.

Career Advice

With experience in corporate America and academia, Dr. Marie can offer much wisdom to young engineers. “Having a competitive nature, I would tell my younger self that it doesn’t have to be about, “Well, I’ll show them.” There is so much more that you don’t have to show the guys that you can Engineering has always attracted problem solvers. What Can I Do With an Online Criminal Justice Degree?

M

any of the people who consider an online criminal justice program wonder exactly what it is they will be able to do after earning their degree. The truth is that there is no exact answer. Criminal justice is a very broad field with a wide range of job opportunities. Grads can find themselves working against crime at the local level as a police officer or at the federal level as an FBI agent. Specific job opportunities also depend upon the program that is completed. Although the liberal arts orientation of most criminal justice programs is designed to prepare students for criminal justice work at almost any level, different programs focus on different aspects of the field. For example, some online criminal justice programs emphasize the administration side of criminal justice, while other programs focus on security management and criminal investigations. The type of program you take will impact your ability to do certain types of jobs within the criminal justice field.

Common Career Paths

Some of the most popular career paths for criminal justice majors include jobs as police officers, security guards, body guards, parole officers, corrections counselors, game wardens,

well as experience as a police officer or law enforcement professional. Police detectives typically work for government agencies, while private detectives work for themselves or private firms.

Alternative Career Paths and park rangers. After earning an online criminal justice degree, you should be able to obtain any of these entry level positions. Entry-level jobs are also available at the Department of Homeland Security, which employs thousands of law enforcement workers through its many agencies. Jobs are available as a U.S. Border Patrol agent, an immigration inspector, a customs inspector, or a Federal Air Marshal. If you have law enforcement experience or an advanced criminal justice degree you may also be able to pursue opportunities with the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as well as other government organizations, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Other jobs that often require some work experience include police detective and private detective. Both of these careers can be pursued by people who have a criminal justice degree as

Although most criminal justice majors use their online degree to pursue a job in law enforcement or a related field, there are some grads that use their credentials to move into other areas of social science, such as law or public policy. Job opportunities exist within courts, law firms, and advocacy groups. Specific job titles include court administrator, legal assistant, law clerk, and policy advocate. Criminal justice majors can also move into social work, victim services, or similar jobs that call for knowledge of law enforcement, courts, and human rights. Although some of these jobs may require additional education or professional certification, a criminal justice program will give students the academic foundation for higher education programs as well as the skills needed to succeed in fields that deal with the political, social, and psychological aspects of society.
