hen a new year starts and an old one ends, we usually have some things to do—find time to take down the holiday lights is one. Two, write a list of resolutions for the upcoming year, and three, get that gym membership, based on a resolution in number two. But the most important thing to do, I think, is to spend time reflecting on the year that has past, recalling both things done well and which things that could be improved. Remembering to take this information with us into the coming year can help us focus on what is important, like spending more time with one's family, helping others, or focusing on a goal we have or ourselves but have been putting off for whatever reason. I recently got one of those "life-organizing" journals, that are currently all the rage. It has room to write down my goals for each day, week and month, and it's supposed to remind me to compare what I wanted for myself and what I actually achieved. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works for me. Of course, I haven't started using it yet, because well, I'm waiting for the first of the year when all things get a fresh start.

Ways To Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday by Michelle LaRowe, Momastic.com

BUILD A BETTER PHILADELPHIA

CREATE A CAREER THAT MATTERS

America’s natural gas industry is growing fast. With new technologies and new products it’s leading the charge to a cleaner, greener future. We’re PGW – the country’s biggest municipal natural gas company – and we’re building a better energy economy for all.

An

American clergyman, an activist and a leader in the AfricanAmerican civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to advancing civil rights. In part due to his work, an end came to racial segregation. Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is an opportunity not only to remember his life and the important work he did, but is an opportunity to keep his dream alive by passing it onto our children, the next generation. As you consider January 15, the birthday of this iconic figure, make plans to celebrate.

Our award-winning teams are engaged, determined, and rewarded.

Here are 5 ways you can celebrate:

1. Celebrate diversity. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that we would one day be a color blind society and that rational inequality would come to an end. Have a birthday dinner for Martin Luther King Jr. and serve a variety of foods from different cultures. If the thought of cooking ethnic foods from various regions sounds like too much work, pick up takeout from a variety of local ethnic restaurants. 2. Make a commitment to stand against injustice. Talk about a problem in your community and commit to taking action. Whether it’s dedicating your time, talent or finances to a cause, as a family, do something to keep Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive. 3. Attend a commemorative service. Local churches and community centers in various areas hold services and events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday. Consider attending an event as a family. 4. Read aloud Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. If your children are too young to comprehend the words, share an abbreviated, simplified version that talks about the dream he had in a way they can understand. 5. Participate in the Martin Luther King Day of Service. The Martin Luther King Day of Service is part of United We Serve, the president’s national call to service initiative. Find a project in your community and serve in any number of ways, like by volunteering to help clean up the local park, by serving food at a homeless shelter or by bringing donations to a local charity. Do you think it’s important to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday? How do you celebrate? Article provided by www.momtastic.com

5 Ways to Increase the Number of Women in the Manufacturing Industry by Pamela Kan

or Engineers Week, we focus on women in engineering and manufacturing, the struggles they face, and how small manufacturers can help raise the number of women employed in manufacturing above 27%. This is an exciting time to be in U.S. manufacturing as the industry is experiencing incredible growth, supports 17.6 million jobs, is considered the world’s 9th largest economy, and provides above-average salaries for employees. Yet, any of you reading this article are well-aware of the skills gap problem we are facing in this industry—with more than 2 million jobs expected to go unfilled in the next decade. And, while women were introduced into the manufacturing workforce with World War I, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) notes that while women represent nearly half of the total U.S. labor force (47%), they comprise less than a third (27%) of the manufacturing jobs. In nearly 100 years, there has been a meager 8% increase in the number of female employees in the manufacturing industry. Not the kind of stellar advancement anyone would like to see.

However, the WIM survey found that only 7% of respondents listed manufacturing as a field that offers opportunities for young women. Even worse, 59% said they could not recall a manufacturing company they would consider a leader in attracting and advancing women. Therefore, it is not surprising that 68% of the respondents stated they were not likely to consider manufacturing as a career path. How can small manufacturers make a difference? Numbers like these show that manufacturing has an obvious perception problem. But what can we do to see real change? Most of us work at companies with fewer than 100 employees, which make up 94% of the manufacturing companies in the U.S. We are struggling to fill the two to three key positions needed to keep our lines moving and products shipping. As a female president of one of those manufacturing companies, I have worked for years on various national, regional, and local committees to help change some of the alarming skills gap stats. And while that work is important and is helping to make a difference in the big picture, I believe it is up to each individual company to do their part in helping make a change. I encourage all manufacturers, big and small, to help change the perceptions of manufacturing—and in turn increase the number of female employees—by focusing on these five areas: • Working with educators and parents to differentiate myths from realities • Serving as mentors and role models • Providing hands-on experiences • Showcasing innovation/technology • Highlighting meaningful work

The main reasons women end up leaving STEM education paths and professions are due to the organizational climate and lack of mentorship. (Credit: Society of Women Engineers)

Why are there so few women in manufacturing? If the jobs are there, and the pay is great, why aren’t women taking advantage of them? A 2014 Women in Manufacturing report showed that young women, like most people considering future careers, want interesting and challenging work and a high earning potential.

Educators and Parents: Let’s Talk While I talk with high school and college-age students as often as possible, I’ve come to realize that the real target audience needs to be the school staff and parents. Students can be fascinated by the opportunities in manufacturing, but unless they have support from counselors and parents, they will not consider this industry as they make their future plans. In the 2015 public perception report by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, Americans are reluctant to choose careers in manufacturing, and thus, they aren’t encouraging the next generation to pursue these jobs either. Manufacturing offers a strong career path and multiple benefits without requiring four-year degrees, but many schools focus only on universities and colleges.

Page 7

While these are clearly great learning institutions, they aren’t the only option. I meet so many students who would be tremendous assets to the manufacturing community but didn’t realize it was even an opportunity. I share with educators and parents the Top 20 Facts list from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) as it includes the latest number on salaries, health benefits, and job security, which are all positive. Mentors are another important factor in bringing in more women to this industry. According to “Why So Few?” by the American Association of University Women in 2010, “Mentorship is often cited as a key strategy for exciting, supporting, and keeping students, young scientists, and engineers in the fields of STEM. This is particularly true for individuals who haven’t historically participated in these areas—such as young women and underrepresented minorities.” The Million Women Mentor program was developed for “Advancing Women and Girls in STEM Careers Through Mentoring,” and it found that 20% of current female high school students interested in a STEM discipline said they would like to learn more about mentoring and motivational programs to help prepare them for the future. My fellow females: We are the ones needed to be mentors and role models to this new group of women in manufacturing. We need to take time to answer questions, give guidance, provide real-life answers to their questions, and be visible role models.

Hands-On Experience

Women in STEM Occupations reported in 2008 show that very few pursue jobs in engineering or manufacturing, focusing on life sciences instead. (Credit: U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Increasing STEM education participation and proficiency for girls starting in elementary school is critical step. Manufacturers must come together to create positive exposure and experiences for women at a young age. When students have some knowledge of the opportunities in manufacturing, their interest in pursuing it as a career rises exponentially. One successful program is the FIRST Robotics Competition, which provides hands-on learning using math and engineering to promote STEM-based learning. According to FIRST statistics, of those who have participated in FIRST: • They are twice as likely to major in science or engineering • 33% of girls plan to major in engineering • More than 75% are in a STEM field as a student or professional

Events like National Manufacturing Day, Junior Achievement job shadowing, career fairs, and more all play a role in showcasing the benefits of manufacturing and providing hands-on, real insight that could change the minds and career paths of a significant number of young women.

Millennials have been raised with technology as part of every aspect of their lives, and understanding that it plays an important role in manufacturing will help them see this as a more viable career option.

Innovation and Technology Manufacturing in 2018 means technologically advanced machinery and modern buildings designed to help teams of employees collaborate and communicate more easily. It includes use of robotics, 3D printing, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, augmented reality, and the Internet of Things (IoT), just to name a few components. Millennials have been raised with technology as part of every aspect of their lives, and understanding that it plays an important role in manufacturing will help them see this as a more viable career option. From hardware to software and everything in between, the technology advancements in manufacturing are constant and require workers who can keep adapting. Manufacturing isn’t a career where you check your brain at the door. It needs great problem-solvers who can work to meet current customers’ needs, while also developing new innovations for future concerns. A 2014 Deloitte/The Manufacturing Institute report found that 78% of Millennials said their decision to work at a company was influenced by how innovative they considered the company to be. Don’t miss that number or its importance. The majority of young workers are selecting their future employers based on perceived innovation. Manufacturing is all about innovation—it’s what we do all day, every day.

Meaningful Work

Millennials also value the chance to make a difference. Talking with the engineers at my company, they have all said—many times—that what

Industries that are the most attractive to women in manufacturing as of 2015. (Credit: Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute) they most love about the manufacturing industry is the ability to take their schooling and innate interests and make a difference by creating something new that can help a customer. This is what we all want and manufacturing has this. We need to be shouting this out much louder! No matter the size of our manufacturing companies, we can make a difference in the skills gap issue, specifically when it comes to women in this industry. When we focus on sharing the great realities of manufacturing with educators, parents, and students—providing mentorship and role models, as well as hands-on experience—I am confident we will see women hit a true growth stage of impact and influence within this sector. And if we start now, we won’t have to wait another 100 years to enjoy the success women can bring to this industry. Article provided by MachineDesign.com

Interview Tip: Be Likable

Genuine confidence means you sell your skills and abilities with confidence answers and compelling examples. Most importantly, engage the hiring manager or interviewers throughout the process. iring committees spend hours evaluating applications and preparing interview questions. Quality candidates spend hours preparing and practicing for their interview. Much of the decision often comes down to one simple factor. Are you likeable?

Two Key Questions

Despite the thousands of interview questions already in existence and the new ones created daily, hiring managers typically evaluate two key internal questions. One question is, "Why should I hire you?" The other is, "Do I like you?" or, "Would I want to work with you?" While it is important to spend hours preparing to address the "Why should I hire you?" premise, it is equally important to plan to be likable. You cannot change who you are, but you can show off your likable qualities with an effective plan.

usinesses and employers are taking positive steps to encourage disabled workers to join them in the workplace. Workers with disabilities have as much to offer as everyone else. Most countries have laws which mean employers must make reasonable efforts to adapt the workplace to the needs of disabled staff. In addition to the obligations of employers, co-workers of disabled people have a responsibility to provide a supportive working environment. Many people aren’t used to being around disabled people, and they may be unsure how to deal with them. Non visible disabilities, such as mental health issues, can be particularly challenging for some coworkers to deal with. Honesty, sensitivity and good communication are the core principles for creating a positive working environment. The following tips will help to create a great working relationship between disabled staff and their co-workers.

Some people are completely open about their disabilities and may be resistant to colleagues saying the wrong thing, but others may be easily offended. Co-workers should be aware of the language they use in relation to disabled staff, but shouldn’t get hung about saying the wrong thing all of the time.

Don’t Focus On The Disability

Disabled people like to build friendships and relationships with their co-workers like everybody else, and it’s important to see beyond their disabilities. If you take the time to get to know a disabled colleague, you will see them in a completely different light. For example, rather than viewing a disabled colleague as the visually impaired guy you will know them as the guy who loves baseball, cooking and jazz music.

Play By The Rules

Staff should always know how to accommodate the individual needs of disabled co-workers. For example, a disabled person may need access to specific parking, elevators or adapted desks. A disable worker may need special technology to assist them in the workplace, and colleagues must understand and respect this. Meetings and presentations may have to be adapted to the needs of hearing or visually impaired colleagues. he technology sector is hot and getting hotter, but some specific skill sets are needed more than others. Here are seven of the specialized tech job titles that are expected to be in strong demand for the foreseeable future.

Database Administrator Database administrators (DBAs) manage an organization’s data. They ensure that databases run efficiently and are secure from unauthorized users. DBAs are also responsible for organizing a company’s data and storing it efficiently. The job generally requires a bachelor’s degree in management information systems (MIS) or a computer-related field. Moreover, DBAs must have an understanding of database languages, the most commonly used being Structured Query Language, also known as SQL. A DBA will have to become familiar with whichever programming language an employer uses. Projected future growth: 11% by 2026

ave you ever seen an announcement on USAjobs and wondered how it got there? Surprisingly there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes of every government job posting. Before any announcement ever makes it to USAjobs there are numerous hurdles that must be jumped. Applicants have asked in the past if a certain position was going to be posted, or if an opening is projected for the job they are looking for. The short answer to that is usually, “I don’t know.” The reason for that answer is because there is a lot that happens before a job is actually posted. The very first thing to understand is that most positions that we recruit for are to backfill a vacancy. This is what makes projections impossible because we can’t predict when someone is going to leave in order to need to recruit. It is actually better for us as an organization if the person never leaves. When someone actually does leave, generally there has to be some sort of approval to fill that position. This can take some time depending on the budget and various other factors. Once approved, the hiring department must then submit their recruitment request to HR to begin the process. That is when the announcement is built to be placed onto USAjobs. The fun doesn’t just stop there though. The announcement is just a small part of the recruitment process. Once an announcement is posted, it will remain open for a designated period of time to collect applications from as many people as possible. Applications are not reviewed until the closing date of that announcement. The review is completed to verify each applicant meets the requirements stated in the announcement and provided all needed supporting documentation. After the review is complete, which depending on the number of applicants can take several days, the lists of qualified applicants are sent to the hiring department to review for possible interview. This is sometimes the longest and most quiet step in the process for the applicant. An applicant will receive a notice of whether they were referred to the hiring manager for review, but depending on how busy the department is, the scheduling of the interview could be weeks out from that notice. There is also the possibility that the applicant not be given an interview. This adds to the period of silence, which won’t be broken until they are notified someone else was selected for the position. Once all interviews are conducted the selection is sent to HR for job offer and pre-employment processing. Finally, at the end of the entire process, the applicant attends orientation and starts their brand new career as a federal government employee. Working with Different Generations in the Workplace: What You Need to Know M by Danielle S.

any employers these days pride themselves in maintaining a rich workplace culture. After all, diverse ideas can be a recipe for long-term success in any industry. This is where it can be valuable to have generational diversity in the workplace--but only if employees from different generational backgrounds are able to collaborate and communicate effectively. Having trouble with managing employees from different generations or helping employees from different generations see eye-to-eye? If so, then there are some tips you’ll want to keep in mind.

Common Workplace Generations

Currently, there are employees from numerous generations in the workplace and in a variety of industries. These include: • Baby Boomers (those born immediately following WWII) • Generation X-ers (those born in the 60s through 1980) • Generation Y-ers/Millennials (those born 1980 through mid 90s) • Generation Z-ers (those born mid 90s through early 2000s) Naturally, workers from each of these generations will have different viewpoints, strengths, and weaknesses that they bring to the table. For example, many baby boomers who are still in the workplace have a strong work ethic due to the difficult times in which they grew up. On the other hand, some of them may not be as well-versed with computers and other technology as employees from more recent generations.

Of course, this isn’t a blanket statement that’s true of all baby boomers, but it is a useful example when it comes to thinking about how generation gaps could potentially affect the workplace.

Tips for Working With Different Generations

With numerous generations commonly represented in today’s typical work environment, it only makes sense that leaders and decision-makers should be adequately prepared to work with employees across generations. Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done.

Adapt to Communication Styles

One important thing to remember is that workers from different generations have very different expectations and strengths when it comes to communication styles. While millennials and generation Z employees are likely comfortable with sending out an e-mail to a customer or receiving e-mail communication from a superior, your older generations (such as the baby boomers within your company) may be more comfortable with making a phone call or speaking to a client face-to-face. When it comes to communicating with your multi-generational employees and having them collaborate with others, then, keep these potential strengths and weaknesses in mind. For example, rather than sending out all your team communications via e-mail, consider holding the occasional meeting or conference call.

Understand Workplace Expectations

Different generations also have different cultural expectations—especially when it comes to their work-life balance. Workers from your baby boomer and X generation likely grew up during a time when employees logged all their hours from their workplace. These workers may not bat an eye at the thought of a traditional Monday through Friday, 40-hour (or more) work week. On the other hand, many millennials and generation Z-ers have grown up in a time where telecommuting has become more common. Rather than working at the office 9-5 Monday through Friday, they may have expectations to work from home a day or two a week. The key here is to encourage individuals to work in a way that’s best for them and for the company. This may mean giving employees the option to telecommute on occasion while allowing those who prefer the “traditional” 9-5 to continue working their set schedules. All the while, be sure to acknowledge the efforts of all workers equally.

Finally, understand that it’s not just up to you to be prepared for working with employees across generations. Your cross-generational workers must also be able to understand how to collaborate and communicate with each other. You can foster a better environment by conducting regular team-building exercises and even holding functions outside of work. By getting your employees to learn more about each other and their unique backgrounds, they can better collaborate in the workplace. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Consider a Healthcare Career that Doesn't Require a Four-Year Degree

If

you are interested in a healthcare career but feel discouraged because you can't pursue a bachelor's degree right now, consider obtaining training at a trade school or technical college that will get you employed in a shorter time frame. You can qualify for certain occupations with two years of training or less. This allows you to work for a while and save some money, if you're thinking about returning to school— or you may find yourself satisfied with your original career choice. Demand is strong for workers in a variety of healthcare occupations.

Healthcare Occupations that Require Two Years or Less of Training

You can qualify for some jobs with a short training course leading to a certificate or diploma. Examples of these jobs include: • nursing assistant • mental health aide • dental assistant • physical therapist aide • occupational therapy aide Other positions require two years of education, such as: • physical therapist assistant • occupational therapy assistant • radiologic technologist (commonly called X-ray technician)

of responsibility depending on the job. You can qualify for some of these positions through a certificate program that you complete in one semester, while others require a one-year diploma or two-year degree. A medical assistant who works primarily as an office assistant requires less training than one who has clinical duties or is a billing specialist.

Returning to School in the Future

You may feel satisfied with your career and decide to stick with it for many years to come. However, the door is open if you want to return to school for a bachelor's or graduate degree. You'll already have the fundamental training that may help you complete your studies sooner than if you were starting straight out of high school, and you might even be able to test out of some courses.

What Is Diversity Recruiting? I

Diversity recruiting is, without exception, one of the best things you can do for your business. But what, exactly, is it?

t is the process of seeking out job candidates from diverse backgrounds to fill open positions within an organization. The concept of a “diverse” workforce, however, extends beyond ethnicity…it includes underrepresented groups such as women or veterans as well.

Benefits of Diversity in the workplace

A study published by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reported that “only about 11% of senior leaders in S&P 500 companies hail from ethnic and racial minorities, up only 2% from 15 years ago and still quite far from 38%, the share of US adults representing ethnic and racial minorities.” Companies, however, gain a competitive advantage over the competition when they incorporate diversity within their workforce…an advantage that also leads to increased revenues. In their publication titled The Mix That Matters: Innovation Through Diversity, BCG reported that "a study of 171 German, Swiss, and Austrian companies shows a clear relationship between the diversity of companies’ management teams and the revenues they get from innovative products and services." Just a few other ways that hiring for diversity benefits an organization include:

Resilience

Increased language and cultural awareness with different cultures, backgrounds, experiBusinesses who want to expand their operations ences, and perspectives on problem-solving, it’s quite easy to see that you’ll come up with a in other countries face steep challenges. And more solutions from language barriers, there are cultural differences—yes even in the world of business—that will result in greater productivity. need to be addressed. Having a diverse workforce of individuals with different language and cultural backgrounds, who represent at least some of the nationalities they want to do business with can help companies expand their reach. Larger and more varied pool of candidates When an organization says that it embraces diversity, it will naturally attract a wider range of individuals. However, people are smart…the company’s actions have to match what it says. For example, if a company says that it believes in diversity, yet the company culture doesn’t reflect it, that company will have a hard time drawing diverse candidates to its doors.

Employee Retention

When a business has a reputation of promoting equality and creates an atmosphere of acceptance for all of its employees, they will find that employee retention will remain high.

The Best Civilian Career Fields For Veterans

hat are the best civilian career fields for veterans? Transitioning out of the military and back into civilian life can be difficult in more ways than one, and there’s no one-size-fits-all career path for those making the jump. But in general, some fields and industries offer more for veterans.

There are three basic resources you can use to get started hunting for a government job-one is a Federal search tool called USAJobs that can help you find open positions at the federal level. published a report in 2016 estimating job growth in the tech sector-speculating that more than half a million new tech jobs will be added between the time of the report to 2026. The problem with telling soon-to-be-civilian employees to “look in the tech sector for jobs” is naturally related to the veteran’s military career, the vastness of the industry, and the desired specialty. How can a military member decide which aspect of the industry to approach? Depending on a veterans’ military experiences, jobs in tech may be easier to come by. Those who spent time in uniform doing IT work, computer security, setting up long-haul communications, or developing technical infrastructure may already have qualifications and training civilian employers need. Others may find their specialized military experience can translate to a new career by taking additional training, refresher courses, or by getting involved in new developments in the industry. Those who did IT work in a classified environment may find their old security clearance is an advantage when being considered by a civilian employer. Your old clearance may not “travel” to your new job depending on circumstances, but it’s easier to hire someone with an existing clearance (a “known quantity”, if you like) and experience in such tightly controlled circumstances.

Health Care

The health care field is expected to add more than two million jobs between now and 2026 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are so many military medical career fields that it only makes sense that a large number of veterans will enter the civilian health care industry between now and then. Health care, like IT, may require veterans to get updated certifications or enter into continuing education programs to further their expertise. Additional schooling can also be a gateway to job opportunities via internships, job placement services offered by medical schools or programs, etc. With health care, the option to apply for work in the military medical system is one of the first choices a soon-tobe-civilian is confronted with. Talk to a human resources officer or personnel manager at a military hospital or clinic long before you file military retirement or separation paperwork to learn how hiring procedures work. You can use federal civil service job search tools (USAJobs), hunt for General Schedule jobs in health care, or try searching the Department of Veterans Affairs job board.

Finding Tech Jobs

Tech jobs are available at the usual government hiring sites such as USAJobs and state/local agencies, but you can also find job ads via online trade magazines, LinkedIn, etc. If you are taking continuing education or getting new tech certifications as a civilian job seeker, be sure to take advantage of any career services offered by your institution of higher learning. You may also find help via career days at local universities and Meetupstyle after work mixers in your local area. Some don’t want to work for a civilian company but prefer to stay within the federal system-federal tech jobs are available for everything from IT to aircraft maintenance. If you are interested in these jobs, do a search for Federal Schedule jobs in your area of specialty or planned specialty.

Some in IT find themselves in the health care industry doing work similar to their military occupations, others may come from a non-tech background and get the required certifications to begin a new career in the hybrid IT/health industry. In these times, some growth industries may complicate veteran job-seeker choices. The alternative energy sector offers plenty of work for qualified veterans with a technical background, and a similar wave began in health care when states began to legalize medical marijuana. This controversial addition to your health care employment options may or may not be right for a veteran leaving the service. Job seekers will have to weigh the implications of finding work in the medical cannabis industry given its uncertain future under federal law but also how such work appears on the veteran’s resume. Will a future employer look favorably on such experience or not? The industry is too new to speculate on how things might go in the future, but those are important topics to consider when picking your post-military career path.

Skilled Trade Jobs For Veterans

Veterans who worked in skilled trade jobs for the military find themselves in a unique position-their military careers qualify them for skilled trade jobs in the civilian sector, but these job seekers may be required to add certifications or continuing education in order to be hire-worthy as civilian employees. Military duty may not require the same certifications (or any, depending on the career field and the nature of the training done in those fields) and it may be difficult to determine what’s expected until one begins filling out job applications and taking interviews. But military skilled trade occupations such as airframe maintenance, civil engineering, construction, long-haul communications, even plumbing and HVAC have plenty of demand in the private sector and depending on a veteran’s experiences and career, the opportunities for consulting and advising work may be as worthy of consideration as the actual jobs themselves.

Some may come to the civilian sector completely ready to begin skilled trade work, others may need to update their certifications or training, and still, others may need to consider apprenticeships and OJT. The U.S. Department of Labor has a variety of resources for people who need apprenticeships and on-the-job training. The Department of Veterans Affairs also has programs for those who need career assistance in finding opportunities in skilled trades and other careers via the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program. Each trade has its own requirements, and it’s good to research them prior to leaving the military for work as a civilian. Some prefer to use the GI Bill to help them prepare for a new career outside the militaryand some prefer to start using those GI Bill benefits before they leave the service. It’s possible to prepare for a career that has nothing to do with your previous military job while still on active duty. In such cases it’s a very good idea to talk to both a college admissions counselor and a career advisor or subject matter expert in the career you seek to learn what the most current requirements and certifications might be in your chosen field. Dynamic Diversity I

Page 21

By Edward Chenard

was talking to a guy the other day who was telling me that more people of a certain ethic group should be hired by a certain company, for diversity. It should be pointed out that this ethnic group in question happened to be the one he is a part of. Having hired people myself I really started to wonder about this whole diversity question and what really is diversity when it comes to business settings? Yes we know people of various ethnic groups or skin color or even gender can be called diversity, but what really makes a person diverse, is it really just skin deep or more about diversity of thinking? I like to travel, mainly because I get to meet people I have no clue about how they live or what they consider the norm. It is fun because it is much like solving a puzzle with prizes along the way. Get it right and people usually are quite open. Being of a mixed background myself, the word diversity is not something I pick up just for the office, I live it daily. So when I hear that being part Latin makes me qualified for diversity, I really wonder, does it? When a company is looking for diversity, what kind of diversity counts? Shouldn’t how I think and the unique ideas I bring be the real measure of diversity? Diversity in the way we think counts the most. I go back to that great little cauldron of social experiments in business I call grad school. Where, I had to work with all kinds of people that would fit the traditional diversity definition. But when it came to thinking, most students could be considered a homogeneous group by the time they graduated regardless of where in the world they came from. Reason being, grad school is as much about what you learn as how you think. Since we learn the same, technically we would solve problems the same. In terms of solving business issues, the students had more in common with each other in terms of thinking, thus diversity in thought was very low, even thought diversity in terms of ethnic background was very high. This is important when it comes to hiring because if you hire based on ethnic diversity, the diversity you need, is not necessarily what you will get. The students

will solve the problem pretty much the same because they have the same training. So if you were looking for new and fresh ideas, I would gamble that disappointment was the end result regardless of the cultural background of the student. Take for example, a job I had where I was brought in to shake things up, make big changes and get new ideas going. I was hired for diversity reasons, my diversity was in the way I think and approach problems and opportunities. My ethnic background wasn’t all that dissimilar from many team members, but where I grew up and how I grew up was, and that shaped how I think and approach challenges. My diversity in thinking is what helped shake things up. Did they always like this? No, some people like to do things that are comfortable and don’t like someone questioning them as to why they are doing what they are. But that is what was needed to get the ball rolling and get changes made. As a hiring manager it can be hard to know if you are getting the kind of diversity you need. It first starts by understanding what you lack. If you have an office full of Yes people, getting someone who challenges your ideas, respectfully, can be a form of diversity of thought. To find out, you need to get away from the usually interview waltz which I personally don’t find that helpful. I love to ask a candidate “how are you going to solve my company’s problems?” A great question to finding out how a person thinks and engages in situations presented to them. Get to know where they grew up, how they think and engage others and if their style is right for you. Now since the readership of this site is very international, you will have to check your local hiring laws to make sure you don’t cross the line and ask questions that can get you in trouble. In the end, diversity of thought is not about hiring someone based on background, but on individual contribution to the team. This kind of diversity hiring I believe will catch on when managers really put aside the cookie cutter hiring process and get down to answering what they really need and addressing the issues head on and solving them. Diversity of thought is the way to hire.

Perhaps one of the more important great employee qualities is being able to manage your boss. That does not mean to suck up to him. It means knowing his likes and dislikes, and how he works. For example, does he like to be updated via email which means he is perhaps a very visual based person versus being updated verbally which means he is perhaps more auditory?. Learn how to break bad news to him, prepare him for meetings and the unexpected. You will soon become a key competitive advantage in his team.

Even if you are in the lower rung, make sure you have a managerial attitude. This is one of the important great employee qualities. Behave like a manager and see to it that things are done the way they are supposed to be done. Manage expectations of everyone in the team from the boss to colleagues and peers within the department. Stick to time lines; follow up with next steps after every meeting, have progress reports ready even if they are informal ones like an email.

Great employees know how to manage their time well and even manage their boss's time well.

4. Managing Your Time

Prioritize your work and manage your time well. Know when to do what. Do not procrastinate on work especially when they involve cross department participation. Your delay will affect other people's work. Great employees know how to manage their time well and even manage their boss's time well.

5. Work To Get Results

Work with objectives in mind. What is the overall objective of the project? Work towards the aim that everyone who is involved in a project big or small has a role. Everyone must contribute towards that goal. You must learn to get results and expect high performance of yourself. Do not just do enough to get by. This is one of the most important "great employee qualities."

Page 23

8. Strive For Excellence

In everything you do, strive to be the best you can be. Take the initiative to ensure that things are going right and make sure that the details are tied down. Spend time doing what everyone else takes for granted.

9. Enjoys Work

Peter Drucker, the management guru said, “Those who perform love what they are doing.” Even if it means a routine work, as they know each step and each detail builds on another and helps achieve the company objective. A boss can feel whether employees enjoy their work or otherwise. Someone who enjoys their work will naturally bring their best to work.

Great employees have the stamina to do outstanding work. They set the pace for others to follow. If you want to be great at what you do and be appreciated by the boss, look for ways to outdo yourself. Be the best that you can be. Even if perfection is elusive, go out and get it. Even if you fall short of perfection, your near perfect would have pushed you further than you would have thought possible.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia believes that diversity and inclusion among our employees is critical to our success as an organization, and we seek to recruit, develop and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool. 11. Work Relationships

Bosses trust people who have a "Can Do" attitude in approaching work.

Being nice to people and have great working relationships across departments and ranks is one of the important great employee qualities. It means you can get a lot more cooperation and strong network to help you get your work done. Hence, making your boss look good in the eyes of management. Your boss will have less people problems too. Do you have these great employee qualities? Perhaps you already have them and what you need is a plan to bring them to be noticed. Five Emerging Medical Specialties You’ve Never Heard Of—Until Now

As

medicine evolves, so do the types of doctors most needed. Demand for some of these physicians is already high. Right when her colleagues at Boston Children’s Hospital are leaving at the end of the day, pediatrician Sarah Henry, MD, is just arriving at work. As a nocturnist, Henry has made a career of working the night shift, clocking 10 overnights a month, sleeping mostly during the day, and avoiding typical workday stresses like long commutes.

But the job’s real attractions are less practical. “The hospital at night is a different place than during the day,” Henry says. “There aren’t the meetings and conferences and people coming and going. It’s a leaner, more simplified environment where I can focus on patient care and spend more time with families. That’s something I really value.” Nocturnists are one of several medical career paths to emerge in recent years, partly in response to medical advances but also to new ways in which health care is delivered. We have listed five new specialties, what they entail, and the training needed to pursue them.

1. Cancer Immunologist

Harnessing the immune system to fight malignancies is a burgeoning area of medicine that’s creating huge opportunities for new doctors. “It’s a time of incredible progress that has translated into help for patients,” says Lisa Butterfield, PhD, president of the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer. But the promise of these medications is tempered by new clinical challenges. New treatments like CAR-T cell therapy can cause alarming and even fatal immune overreactions, and drugs known as checkpoint inhibitors have led to the emergence of new forms of autoimmune diseases like inflammatory arthritis and even type 1 diabetes, among other adverse effects.

If you are enthusiastic about the public sector, customer service, and seek a team environment where everyone’s ideas are valued, we want to meet you. Join a dynamic team that encourages growth, diversity, opportunity and excellence.

in lifestyle medicine in October 2017, and so far 300 doctors have received it. Demand to sit for the exam is exploding, Dysinger says. U.S. candidates must already be board-certified by a medical specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialists or the American Osteopathic Association.

4. Clinical Informatics

Also known as biomedical or health informatics, the field of clinical informatics involves collecting and analyzing patients’ health information and applying those insights to improve health, says Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, president and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association. The field is taking off due to provisions of the Affordable Care Act, which mandates the use of electronic health records (EHR). But hospitals also are recruiting physicians who can fulfill the promise of these information troves, from making better clinical decisions to guiding research efforts. Top jobs are chief medical information officer and chief health information officer, with varying proportions of time spent in the clinic and with informatics duties, says Howard D. Silverman, MD, MS, professor of the Clinical Informatics Fellowship at University of Arizona College of Medicine at Phoenix. Physicians versed in informatics can also find work with EHR vendors and Silicon Valley startups or in research. Doctors need to become board certified in clinical informatics through an exam offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Pathology. Physicians in all 24 subspecialties are eligible, but candidates must have completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program to sit for the exam.

5. Medical Virtualist

The telehealth market is expected to rise 30% each year between 2017 and 2022 as telemedicine gains traction as a way to deliver second-opinion consults and offer telepsychiatry and telestroke services. More health systems also are adding telemedicine to their raft of services, using their own physicians or those employed by telehealth companies to provide primary care triage, specialty consults, and virtual rounding. While these medical virtualists don’t yet require certification, many see a need for the specialty.

“As more health care institutions start to incorporate virtual care into their strategic planning, we need to make sure we are prepared to train future providers.” “As more health care institutions start to incorporate virtual care into their strategic planning, we need to make sure we are prepared to train future providers,” says Rahul Sharma, MD, emergency physician-in-chief for NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Physicians will need to demonstrate competency in conducting the virtual interaction — including body language, eye contact, and the environment from which the visit is conducted — and gain expertise in the legal ramifications and regulatory issues of virtual medicine. Aspiring virtualists should spend several years in a traditional clinic setting before specializing in the virtual world exclusively, however. Says Sharma, “The clinical acumen you get from face-to-face experience with patients is incredibly important.” Article provided by aamc.org The AAMC serves and leads the academic medicine community to improve the health of all.
