nprecedented. Challenging. Uncertain. Never have I heard these words used more frequently than in the past few weeks. All of those words ring true in this first week of April, 2020. The Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has upended the world as we know it and things are changing day by day and week by week. It's hard to know what will happen next. Unprecedented. Challenging. Uncertain. On top of it all, none of us have been through anything like this in our lifetime. Yes, the major happenings of WWII and the great depression of the 30s made huge impacts on the lives of Americans, but to those of us in younger generations, this new virus has affected us more than anything else has as a whole. Unprecedented. Challenging. Uncertain. It's hard to imagine what the future will look like or how soon it will arrive. Some estimates are that stringent social distancing should continue for somewhere between four and 18 months. Will we ever go back to the way things were before the social distancing and lockdowns? Will this experience change things making us better or more compassionate to others? Personally, I choose to remain hopeful and optimistic about the future on the other side of this pandemic, but it's so hard to know what will come. We are in unprecedented, challenging, and uncertain times. Until we are past all of this, please stay as safe as you can. Practice social distancing, wash your hands and don't touch your face. It's the best we can do for now.

Staying Professional While Working from Home

orking from home isn't easy on a good day. Working from home during a pandemic is even harder. If you're quarantined and working from home, it's important to know exactly what you can do to stay as professional as possible. Your clients and team members are still counting on you even if you aren't in the office. Unfortunately, making the transition to working from your house can be a bit difficult. Not only are you in a new space with new distractions, but you also don't have a rigid schedule to keep you on track. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to stay professional while you're at home. First of all, act like you're still going to the office when it comes to getting dressed. Even if you're going to be having virtual meetings where you don't need to show your face, going through your typical morning routine can help you stay focused while on the job. Get up on time, take a shower, and style your hair the way you usually would. You should also go ahead and get dressed. Wearing professional clothing and maintaining your regular routine can help you keep a focused mindset when it comes to getting your work done each day. It's also important to maintain normal business hours. This will help you to set boundaries. One of the biggest challenges adults face when they're working from home is the feeling that they should always be working. If you're on the computer, after all, you could be checking emails or responding to clients. Unfortunately, this can quickly lead to stress

and burnout. Ideally, you should set regular business hours. After hours, you should try your best to relax and unwind the way you normally would. In some cases, you may need to step away from your computer or workspace so you can focus on taking care of yourself. Remember that being in quarantine can be very emotionally draining, so it's important to take your mental health seriously. Take a bath, read a book, or watch a movie, but don't work more than you need to. Understand that when you work from home, you may have personal distractions that make focusing on work difficult. If you have kids, pets, or chores, you may find that it's easier to think about those things than to stay focused on work-related tasks. Try to find a balance. For example, tell yourself that you can do chores on regularly scheduled breaks. Maybe you can watch your kid's YouTube video on your lunch break. You could even play with your cat on one of your breaks. When you're supposed to be focusing on emails or spreadsheets, however, avoid thinking about other distractions and instead give your full attention to your job. This is one of the best ways you can stay professional while at home. Change is never easy, and working from home is no exception. With these tips and tricks, however, you'll find that you can stay professional and on top of things even when you're working from your house. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

How to Actually Achieve a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace by Laura Newcomer

T

hink about what your workplace looks like: Who do you work with and what is their background? Do you work with men and women, with people from two-income families and those who are the sole support of their loved ones? You probably also work with people who came from small towns and big cities, people who went the “traditional” path to higher education and those who took a more winding route.

All of that is demonstrating that the workforce is changing its shape and size and makeup, and that’s a good thing. The more voices and backgrounds a company has, the better responsive they are to the global marketplace. And inclusiveness and diversity be it in gender or religious beliefs or ethnicity and more are both things that employees and potential employees believe to be valuable. So how do you create a workforce that looks like that? This graphic has some ideas to help you get started. The topic of diversity is gaining more and more attention in workplaces across the country. And it should. Devoting national and local attention to exploring who is most excluded from the corporate ladder—and how and why—is essential if we want to dismantle the prejudices that have excluded people of different genders, ethnicities, races, abilities, and so on from the same economic and career opportunities enjoyed by people with more privileged backgrounds. Aside from simply being the right thing to do, embracing diversity in the workplace can yield plenty of benefits. Research consistently finds that diverse companies tend to outperform homogenous ones— yet in spite of the inherent and demonstrated value of inclusiveness, American workplaces still have plenty of room to improve on the diversity front. Here’s why inclusive workplaces are so important, plus how to make your company a more welcoming and vibrant place to work:

The Importance of Inclusion at Work

More and more people believe in the importance of inclusivity at work, which means that an increasing number of job seekers take this factor into account when assessing potential workplaces. Research suggests that up to 67 percent of job seekers consider diversity when eyeing companies and job offers. Meanwhile, current employees also want to see greater diversity in their workplaces. Research suggests 57 percent of team members wish their company would do more to promote and increase diversity. Enhancing workplace diversity and inclusiveness can boost morale, which has a direct correlation with productivity. Perhaps this helps to explain why research has found that the most ethnically diverse companies are 35 percent more likely to perform better than the least ethnically diverse companies. The researchers

concluded this is because diverse companies are more likely to attract top talent, sustain satisfied employees, and earn favor among their customers. Inclusive companies are also more likely to drive innovation, capture new markets, and have higher cash flow. Despite the indisputable benefits that stem from diversity and inclusion, statistics suggest diversity is still a pipe dream in many workforces across the U.S. For instance, a study of hundreds of companies found that while 66 percent of companies claimed to have developed strategies for hiring a more diverse workforce, only 25 percent of them have set concrete targets for gender diversity. Perhaps this is because there’s a misconception that women are equally represented in the workplace. For example, nearly 50 percent of men believe women are well represented in leadership at organizations where women hold only 10 percent of senior positions. Stats about racial and ethnic diversity aren’t any better: Research suggests that Latinx and Black Americans are woefully underrepresented. And in one survey, only 48 percent of Black women reported feeling like they have the same opportunities in the workplace compared to their white peers. Clearly, when it comes to making workplace diversity a reality, there’s still a lot of work to be done. And it’s work that’s well worth doing.

How to Work Toward a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace Understanding the importance of diversity and inclusiveness is one thing. Actually making these cornerstones of your company culture is another. No matter where you’re at on the path toward greater diversity and inclusion, the following strategies will help ensure you bake these values into the foundations of your workplace.

Make the hiring process as transparent as possible

Inclusive practices start before you even onboard someone to your team. If you want to invite applications from diverse applicants, then it’s essential to make your application process inviting and accessible.

Create an equal opportunity policy

While codifying inclusivity isn’t the end all be all of diversity, it is an important start. Writing inclusiveness into your company’s policies and procedures helps establish diversity as a company-wide priority and provides team members with a legal safety net. It also communicates to prospective and current employees that the company is willing to take action in the name of inclusivity.

Train leaders and managers to practice inclusion

Team leaders and managers set the tone for workplace culture. If they model inclusiveness, then other team members are more likely to do the same. That means it’s essential to train your leaders and managers to practice inclusion. If they’re resistant, that may be a sign they’re not properly equipped to lead a diverse team. On a related note, it’s important to make sure leadership and management teams are themselves diverse. Preaching diversity without practicing it is unlikely to create trust among team members. Currently, only 20 percent of C-suite roles are held by women, and women of color make up only 3 percent of these roles. Meanwhile, white men are significantly more likely than any other demographic to hold managerial roles. These figures need to change for any workplace to effectively practice and promote diversity.

Make your workplace more accessible

Diversity isn’t only about gender and race. It also includes people with all ranges of physical and neurological abilities. If you want to embrace diversity across the board, then it’s essential to make sure your workplace is accessible to as many people as possible. This applies in the more subjective sense—as with making your hiring process less biased, per the section above—and in the very physical sense. Your workplace should be ADA compliant to ensure people of all physical abilities can comfortably access and operate in the space. Also, be sure to solicit feedback from members of your team who may be differently abled and incorporate their feedback into office planning and organization.

Make sure inclusion is not a one-time thing

Inclusion doesn’t end when you’ve hit a certain quota for minority representation or attended a weekend workshop on diversity. Instead, it should be practiced on an ongoing, daily basis. Practicing inclusiveness from day to day could manifest in a number of ways, from ensuring that everyone is heard in meetings to promoting flexible working structures, making sure team members of all backgrounds have opportunities to advance, developing mentorship programs, holding team members accountable for microaggressions, and so on.

Include the entire team’s perspective

For a company to be authentic and effective, inclusive practices and procedures can’t be made in a vacuum; instead, they need to be developed in an inclusive way. That means soliciting feedback from the entire team so you can better understand the unique challenges, privileges, and perspectives of different individuals and groups. By regularly asking your employees about their experiences—ideally anonymously so respondents are more comfortable being honest—you’ll be able to identify issues as early as possible so you can take steps to correct them. Additionally, soliciting diverse perspectives will help ensure that policies or procedures aren’t aligned strictly with the biases (whether conscious or not) of whoever made them.

Take note of issues and make adjustments accordingly

As noted above, inclusivity requires ongoing vigilance in order to ferret out biases and ensure the working environment remains accessible and inviting to people of all backgrounds. Part of this process requires being receptive when issues arise and being willing to make adjustments as needed. If team members feel unwelcome, then it’s important to take action—whether that means hosting a diversity training, reprimanding discriminatory team members, or adjusting workplace policies. For your company to enjoy the many benefits of a diverse team, leaders at every level of your company need to be committed to creating a hospitable and supportive environment for team members from all walks of life. Consider these strategies—and others—to create a foundation for a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Teaching Tips and Resources for Distance Learning as Coronavirus Shuts Down Schools by Julie Mason

How do we continue teaching right now? This is the question that 46,600 members of the Educator Temporary School Closure for Online Learning Facebook group are asking this morning as schools across the nation shut their doors and attempt to shift learning online. According to an analysis from Education Week, as of March 12, “at least 10,600 schools have been closed or are scheduled to close’’ because of Coronavirus. While policy decisions vary state-to-state some states are extending Spring break, while others are scrambling to plan distance learning programs - what remains consistent for all teachers is that this is unprecedented. There is no roadmap for what we should do. We can only do our best, and adapt to the situation as it evolves. In this blog post, we will share: Teaching tips Our favorite online tools Online learning best practices A distance learning model that works

Rely On Video Conferencing For Attendance and Live Classes

Video conferencing will allow you to meet with your students, whether you choose to teach a live class, make yourself available for questions or take attendance and make a plan with your students for the day. Some video conferencing tools you can consider are: Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Microsoft Teams. You can share your screen with students and teach them how to use the online tools and resources that are needed until schools can reopen.

Be Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

It is easier said than done, but because this happened so quickly and is uncharted territory, it is going to feel uncomfortable. Whenever you are working with technology there is the possibility that it won’t work. A computer screen will freeze, a student won’t remember their password, and you won’t know what you don’t know. This is a good time to rely on each other. There are many Facebook groups for educators where teachers are sharing resources and ideas. Do the best that you can, but take breaks. Set boundaries for when you will make yourself available to students. Step away from the computer screen. Trust that you are doing the best that you can.

Our Favorite Tools There are so many different technology tools. It can feel overwhelming to decide what tool to use. These are 5 online tools we highly recommend for enhancing students’ learning.

Online Learning Best Practices

You will face challenges that are unique to an online teaching environment if your school closes and shifts to a distance learning model. Here is our list of best practices for online teaching.

A Distance Learning Model That Works

Lisa Koplik, an elementary teacher and TeacherVision Advisory board member, shares that her district, Wakefield Public Schools, already had a distance learning model in place for snow days called the Learn Anywhere Project. The teachers are using Google Documents in order to share work with their students. Here’s how it works: • Each grade level has its own Google Document. • Google Documents are updated daily with new assignments. • Students do 20-30 minutes of math, reading and writing. Lisa also relies on her favorite tools like iReady, Prodigy, and Readworks to support her students to keep learning outside of the classroom. While the system has worked well in the past, it isn’t without its challenges. “The difficult part has been considering the needs of kids on IEPs if the assignments aren’t differentiated, and ensuring follow through from the few students who simply won’t do the work and the parents don’t enforce it,” Lisa says. While this is a challenging time, no one is more resilient than teachers. To help support everyone, we are offering Your Teacher Self-Care Workbook for free. Use the tips and exercises for six ways to alleviate stress and take care of yourself. How are you managing online learning during school closures? Share with us on Instag ram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Julie Mason is the Head of Content and Curriculum for TeacherVision. As

teachers move classes online and utilize online tools and resources to engage students in remote learning, it’s essential to add social elements to our online courses. This has a couple of powerful benefits. First, students who feel they are part of a learning community online are less likely to feel alone during this time of social isolation. Second, teachers who invest the time and effort needed to develop a sense of community online will have more success engaging students who are learning remotely. A simple strategy is to use online discussions to post icebreaker-style discussion questions. Online discussions are a staple of online learning, and the value of discussions can hardly be overstated. They allow students to: • Articulate their ideas • Ask questions • Learn from different perspectives • Make connections • Think critically about new information and ideas • Receive validation from their peers However, online academic discussions are more successful when students have had the chance to develop their social presence online. The social presence is the student’s ability to project their true selves in an online environment, perceive their classmates as real people, and form meaningful relationships online. This is easier to do if students have opportunities to get to know one another online. Online icebreakers, or non-academic discussion questions, can help students get to know one another and develop their social presence. Below is an example of an icebreaker discussion question I use to get students chatting informally at the start of a course.

Below are some ideas for fun icebreaker-style discussion questions.

• If you could have lunch with a famous person, who would you choose and why? In your response, include three questions you would like to ask this person. • If you could have a superpower, which

would you choose and why? • Describe your perfect day from beginning to end. How would you spend your time? • If you were stranded on a desert island, which three objects would you bring with you and why? • Post three statements (two truths and one lie) then try to guess each other’s lie. • Would you rather [one option] or [second option]? Explain your choice. • What is your favorite television show to binge-watch? Why? • If you could receive a famous award in your lifetime, what would it be and why? • If Spotify asked you to design a playlist for teens who are stuck at home, what would you call your playlist, and which 15 songs would you include on it? • If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

When teachers design any online discussion question– academic or informal–I encourage them to include the following:

• Creative and catchy title • Questions that encourage more detailed responses or provide more than one entry point into the conversation • Media (image, photo, video) • Instructions for engaging with their peers once they have posted their response to the discussion question.

Not only do informal conversations build community, but they can help students feel connected to their peers while learning remotely. If students feel connected to a learning community online, they are more likely to engage in online tasks and be respectful in their interactions with each other. Teachers can also use FlipGrid for these informal conversations. Students can record videos responding to discussion prompts and then comment on each other’s videos. How to Support Nurses During a Crisis Like COVID-19 N by Brittney Wilson, BSN, RN

urses need to support during the COVID-19 pandemic like anyone else. They probably need even more. We’ll tell you why and give you some ideas for ways to support nurses during a crisis.

is that nurses still go to work. Nurses are on the front line of the defense against this deadly disease. They still have to make the donuts. Nurses are the players in the COVID-19 war games.

How to Support Nurses During a Crisis like COVID-19

Nurses are Strong But Still Human

Nurses work 12-hour shifts and are usually gone and away from their families for 14-15 hours a day for 3 to 4 days a week. When a medical crisis arises, they are often gone 16-17 hours a day for up to 7 days a week. While you’re at home with your family, they’re spending almost no time with their family. When they do get home, their children are asleep. They have to take a shower so hot it’s pretty much an autoclave, and are probably too tired to eat. When they go to the grocery store and something is out they don’t have time to go to another store. They can’t order grocery deliveries because they won’t be home during the time frame available. hope and pray that they will be kind and considerate as a substitute parent while they are out saving lives. For nurses, everything in a crisis is amplified.

So How Can you Help Nurses During a Crisis

Helping nurses during a crisis can actually be pretty simple. Think of all the things you would do for someone when they have a new baby or if a loved one has passed. Any of the kind gestures you would share with a person during those moments are things that would be appreciated by a nurse working overtime and with sick patients. Except don’t send flowers, that’s would be weird and wasteful. Here is a detailed list of tasks that you can do to help a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic: • Feed Them • Make a freezer meal • Give them restaurant gift cards • Send a deli tray • Bake cookies • Pay it forward for them at the Starbucks • Send staples that you know are hard to find at the grocery store but are needed (beans, rice, pasta, canned soups, canned and frozen vegetables) • Assist with Chores • Clean their house or maybe just their kitchen or another high-traffic area • Mow their grass • Pick up an extra pack of toilet paper and drop it off at their house • Do a load of laundry (we understand if you don’t want to touch the scrubs, trust me, we don’t either) • Clean their gutters • Pressure wash their driveway • Entertain their kids so they can… … go grocery shopping … take a shower … take a nap … cook dinner

The List Goes On

There are so many ways that you can help reduce the stress in a nurses life during a crisis by just helping them do all the normal things that humans do when they aren’t working overtime or dealing with the stress of knowing they are the most likely population to catch this disease. Get creative. There are no rules… well, other than the 6 feet rule, washing your hands, and the other ways to prevent Corona virus. Those are pretty solid.

This isn’t a post meant to make anyone feel guilty or shameful that they aren’t out on the frontline dealing with this crisis. So many people want to know how they can be helpful to a nurse during this difficult time. So I wrote this so you can know exactly what is helpful to nurses who don’t have the luxury of staying home (and it is a luxury) with their families during this global pandemic. If you know a nurse that’s working during this crisis, be kind and thoughtful. Share a smile and words of encouragement. Your emotional support and kindness are absolutely free and probably the most valuable thing you could give them. Celebrating Armed Forces Day A rmed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Thanks to President Harry S. Truman, it’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

The History of Armed Forces Day

Although, originally, there were single day celebrations for each branch of the military, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force; this format changed on August 21, 1949, when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day. The first official Armed Forces Day took place on May 20, 1950, and was themed “Teamed for Defense.” In honor of the special day, B-36 Bombers flew over state capitals, a march was led by more than 10,000 veterans and troops in Washington, D.C., and over 33,000 people participated in a New York City parade. In addition, the first Armed Forces Day also played an essential part in educating society and expanding public knowledge of the military and the role they play in the community. Therefore, it wasn’t only a means to honor those who serve or who have served in the military, but also a way to showcase its top of the line equipment and abilities used to protect those in our country. Interestingly, the marked celebration isn’t just limited to the United States. Other countries who honor this victorious day include Armenia, Australia and New Zealand, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burma, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Lebanon, Mali, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mexico, North Korea, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Vietnam. In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday. It’s celebrated on the third Saturday of every May and is exhibited by exercises, parades, and receptions that highlight and honor our amazing military and all of its strength. An excerpt taken from an article written in the New York Post on May 17, 1952, sums up Armed Forces Day’s utmost

importance, “It is our most earnest hope that those who are in positions of peril, that those who have made exceptional sacrifices, yes, and those who are afflicted with plain drudgery and boredom, may somehow know that we hold them in exceptional esteem. Perhaps if we are a little more conscious of our debt of honored affection they may be a little more aware of how much we think of them.” Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace– many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth–that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice. – President John F. Kennedy, 1963

How to Celebrate Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

Attend one of the many events in cities across America including parades, military service displays, educational exhibits, luncheons, motorcycle rides, run/walk races and much more. Also, since Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, many military installations are available for public viewing for those wishing to take part in the celebration or to learn more about our country’s military.

The professional team members

More ways to celebrate

• Wear red, white and blue • Fly the American flag • Thank a man or woman who serves or has served • Talk with or write to a military member • Donate to veteran or military-based organizations • Send care packages for those serving overseas • Volunteer through the VA or a veterans service organization

The importance of this day should always be evident. It is a day that our military members rightly deserve and it’s essential that we celebrate it accordingly.

What makes Armed Forces Day different from Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Unlike Veterans Day, which honors those who served, and unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died serving, Armed Forces Day is a day to honor all of the men and women currently serving as well as those who have served, both active and former military. Digital Fluency

While not all manufacturing jobs will require extensive training in software development or IT, they will require expertise with digital technologies and digital systems. Indeed, four out of five areas of ability outlined in a skills report compiled by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte involve digital fluency. With the advent of no code platforms in manufacturing, there are more ways than ever for digitally capable workers to make an impact without needing to be able to write production-ready code. All workers would do well to improve their facility with hardware and software, Many of these skills require advanced digital networks, and manufacturing-related digital tools. training. Soft Skills

For all of its mechanical complexities, manufacturing is in many ways still a human industry. Humans are everywhere in manufacturing, making, marketing, selling, coordinating, and everything in between. For this reason, the leading analysts agree that soft skills like critical thinking, interpersonal relationship building, ability to manage others, persuasion, and empathy will only grow more important in the years to come. Many think that the greatest leaps forward will come to manufacturers who learn how to amplify workers’ soft skills with digital tools. Managing messy human relationships is one of the most important manufacturing skills today.

Not all of the most necessary manufacturing skills are digital. In fact, some of the most needed skills in manufacturing are those that require deep experience on the shop floor. In a recent study, many manufacturers reported difficulty finding workers who were proficient enough to operate manufacturing machines, and Industry Specific Credentials In some ways, there’s no substitute for trouble finding workers experienced enough years of experience in manufacturing. Importance of Adaptability and Flexibility in the Workplace H

ave you heard about how Unilever, a British-Dutch conglomerate, took over Ben & Jerry’s? It’s a story of sheer courage of the CEO to show adaptability. Ben and Jerry were known for their best ice cream flavors like Karamel Sutra, Chocolate Therapy and Imagine Whirled Peace. The CEO, in fact, preserved those intangible assets while introducing the company’s own managerial controls. The culture change within the acquisition brought about many challenges and those who adapted to those changes survived.

by Chitra Reddy

"Adaptability is the nature of changing or creating modifications in oneself to suit to the new environment."

Defining Adaptability

Adaptability is the nature of changing or creating modifications in oneself to suit to the new environment. For a workplace culture, it means that a person must be open to new ideas or changes, must be able to work independently or in teams, or carry out tasks that are not intended for one person only. Employers are increasingly shifting from single roles to the rotation of roles and flexible job descriptions. It’s a sought-after skill as it indicates the employee can adapt to changing customer needs, technology trends. It is also tied to career growth as the person becomes more equipped. An adaptable person is someone who can carry out multiple tasks, manage multiple assignments by setting priorities and making changes to attitude to merge with the new culture.

To function or perform in the world in any situation or circumstance requires an individual to possess the basic skill of adaptability. Hence, the importance of adaptability gets stronger when there are more given opportunities.

When the hiring process is initiated, the employer looks not only on the candidate’s skills and experience but whether he/she would blend themselves with the culture of the company.

What they mean to say is that skills are acquired only through training but adaptability cannot be learned, it is an inbuilt nature of the person.

3. More productive

Employing adaptable people who fit the culture of the company brings success as they are productive. The job description would be a perfect fit for such people. The success rates are high during the first year of work for a new employee if they fit the culture of the company. They know what to adopt and what ways to carry out their work that brings more output. Employment and promotion opportunities are higher for adaptable individuals as many other people lack these skills.
