20
20 was hard for many of us, and although we are all facing the same pandemic, it has been harder for some than for others. And while, after what feels more like an eternity than just a calendar year, we finally get to transition to 2021, where we will deal with some residual issues. At the time of this writing, COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and number of deaths related to the virus have been increasing daily, and there's no real indication of when they might level out. Fortunately, there are at least three vaccinations ready for distribution coming soon to the front line workers and first responders who have been working so diligently to keep us cared for over the past year. Aside from the global pandemic, we also have a newly elected president. Regardless of your political views, this will be a big change (as it always is when the presidency switches political parties). I usually write an editorial comment about New Year resolutions or career goals in the coming year for this January issue. But this time it is a bit different. My hope for us all in the coming year is not about losing weight or managing time better, but to be more grateful for what we have, being present in the moment and staying healthy. As we look forward to 2021, I wish all of you a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Is This The Right Time to Switch Careers? Many People are Discovering Their Passions During The Pandemic by Brandpoint.com
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people in countless ways. From quarantine and social distancing to remote working, furlough and job loss, many people are reassessing how they spend their time and make money. Turning proverbial lemons into lemonade, people of all ages and backgrounds have decided to pivot their careers to do something that they truly enjoy.
The silver lining of the pandemic is it has given the gift of time for reflection and self-discovery. However, it's one thing to enjoy a talent or passion; it's another to figure out how to monetize it. Time provides the gift of insight
With extra time at home, people are taking stock of their jobs and what paths might make most sense for the future. They also have time to explore hobbies and passions that may have been put on hold previously. Finding enjoyment in these activities and realizing strengths and talents, this can be the inspiration for a new chapter. Here are a few examples: • Limited restaurant hours and options paired with ample time to spend in the kitchen has inspired foodies to flex their culinary muscles. Some have started showing off their creations on social media and even recording how-to videos to share with friends and family. Live cooking videos may have been a fun way to connect socially with others from a distance. • Having last-minute needs for household supplies, such as desks for the whole family, DIYers started working on projects in garages and sheds, realizing they have a maker mindset and handy capabilities. Talking with others and sharing images of finished projects, they've discovered their talents are in high demand, and others are interested in their creations. • Unexpected changes due to hour reduction, job loss and more have financial consequences for many families. Number-minded people rise to the challenge, creating agile budgets that help their family thrive in uncertain times. These people may even share their budgeting tips with others and find joy in helping people discover financial security.

Fastest-Growing Tech Occupations Include Data Scientists, Engineers by Nick Kolakowski
T
he 2020 edition of Dice’s Salary Report showed significant salary growth for certain kinds of skills, including Swift and Kafka. Now let’s take a deeper dive into the tech occupations that enjoyed the biggest increases in salary between 2018 and 2019. Based on our analysis, it’s clear that employers are hungry for technologists who can carry out a variety of tasks, from analyzing data to building applications (as well as making sure those applications go into the world relatively bug-free). The data from the Salary Report was drawn from 12,837 technologists. In addition, the occupations below the chart also incorporated data
from Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the country, for data-points such as time-to-fill and mostrequested skills. (Burning Glass defines “Defining skills” as the day-today tasks and responsibilities of a particular job, while “Distinguishing skills” are advanced skills that are called for occasionally, and really come into play with highly specialized employees.) As you can see from the following list, a broad spectrum of occupations enjoyed gains, which is a reflection of all kinds of companies and industries needing a range of technology services:
RCN provides industry-leading High-Speed Internet, all-Digital TV and Phone services for residential, small/medium and Enterprise business customers. RCN’s advanced digital services are delivered through our proprietary, state-of-the-art fiber-rich network and supported by 10 0% U.S.-based customer service. RCN’s service areas include Boston, Chicago, New York City, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
At RCN, we employ hard-working, action-oriented team members and are continually looking to recruit exceptional talent in all business areas and markets where we offer service. To learn more about current career opportunities visit us at:

Let’s break some of these occupations down a little further. As you’ll see, many of these jobs require a range of skills (and sometimes a good deal of experience) in order to attract the eye of employers.
Security Engineer
Average salary: $121,228 Growth: 9.5 percent Defining skills: Information Security, Network Security, Vulnerability Assessment, Intrusion Detection, Security Operations Distinguishing skills: NIST, Threat Analysis, Nessus, Vulnerability Analysis, McAfee In the wake of several high-profile data breaches over the past few years—including Equifax, Facebook, Marriott International, and other big brands—companies are more cognizant than ever that a security breach can cost corporate reputations and lots of money. No CEO wants to be dragged before Congress to explain how their company accidentally let a hacker steal personal information from 50 million customers. At the same time, the increasing complexity of corporate IT infrastructure makes it harder to secure than ever. That’s why companies really want highly specialized security engineers who can recognize (and patch) the vulnerabilities that inevitably pop up in the system. Those engineers are very hirable if they possess certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH). Employers really want security engineers who can conduct a vulnerability analysis, model threats, and figure out how to prevent data loss. As a result, salaries (on average) have risen from $110,716 in 2018 to $121,228 in 2019 (representing 9.5 percent year over year growth). Businesses that are hiring security engineers include Target, U.S. Bancorp and Northrop Grumman. Employers that are looking to hire security engineers can expect an average of 40 days to fill a vacancy.

As the job title suggests, they guide projects from initiation through planning and execution, which demands high levels of organization, adaptability, and ability to recognize and solve multi-variable problems. With software development becoming exponentially more complicated, the need to manage projects at an exacting, granular level is increasingly important, powering project managers’ growth as aAd-EEOC-Final.indd job category. As a result, 13-HR-0095-BPTW 2013 1 the 3/15/13 4:13 PM average time to fill project manager roles is roughly 38 days.

In addition to technical proficiency in Agile and various methodologies, project managers must display considerable soft skills; they must communicate progress regularly to senior management, negotiate among team members, and convey plans to external stakeholders. Employers are hiring this occupation at significant volume include Fiserv, IBM, Deloitte and Target.
Software Developer
Average salary: $114,336 Growth: 4.7 percent Defining skills: Java, SQL, JavaScript, Python, Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Distinguishing skills: Continuous Integration, HTML5, JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), React, PostgreSQL The ubiquitous need to build software is why software developers accounted for 12 percent of all tech job postings in 2019; in addition, such roles take an average of 39 days to fill, which hints at the aggressive fight among employers for candidates with the right mix of skills and experience. The top employers for software developer positions include tech titans such as IBM, Amazon and Accenture, but even the smallest startups need developers skilled at front-end and back-end tasks. The most common software-development skills include Java, SQL, JavaScript, Python and C++, and software developers are always interested in expanding their skillsets. For example, mobile developers who have spent the past decade building iOS and Android apps using Objective-C and Java are no doubt very interested in Swift (Apple’s new-ish language for iOS) and Kotlin (which Google recently named a “first class” development language for Android). Those developers who specialize will often ask for higher starting salaries and additional benefits.
Even the smallest startups need developers skilled at front-end and back-end tasks. Data Engineer
Average salary: $113,249 Growth: 9.3 percent Defining skills: Python, SQL, Big Data, Apache Hadoop, Extraction Transformation and Loading (ETL) Distinguishing skills: Data Warehouse Processing, Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS), ElasticSearch, Apache Impala, Apache Oozie The challenges facing data engineers will only become more complex in coming years. Everything from IoT devices and wearables to POS dashboards are feeding unimaginable amounts of structured and unstructured data to companies. Data engineers, in turn, must figure out how to store, move, and clean that data so that data scientists and other professionals can analyze it for valuable insights. That complexity means that experienced data engineers have a plethora of skills, from Python and SQL programming to working with Apache Hadoop and Scala. That makes them sought-after and highly valuable: Data engineering salaries have increased by more than 9 percent yearover-year, along with a 50 percent increase in job postings. at a large scale, and, as a result, the average time to fill for data engineers is 46 days. The hunger for these technologists seems unlikely to abate anytime soon, given how badly companies want as much data as possible for their operations. Python, machine learning, and Big Data were skills often requested by employers, according to Burning Glass. As datasets grow larger, and the tools to analyze them more advanced, data scientists will also have to consider how artificial intelligence (A.I.), will impact their jobs in future years. On the most straightforward level, A.I. and ML tools will automate many data-science functions, giving more employees the ability to mine data for insight. Average salary: $106,298 Growth: 11.4 percent Defining skills: Python, Machine Learning, SQL, Big Data, Apache Hadoop Distinguishing skills: Scikit-learn, Keras, Pandas, Classification Algorithms, NumPy It’s one thing to collect massive amounts of data from clients, customers, and other sources; it’s quite another to successfully analyze that data in ways that executives and employees can utilize to make the business grow. Because data science is often as much an art as a science, it requires quite some time to master; and because of that, data scientists with the right mix of skills and experience can command sizable average salaries (there’s also data science certifications that can help boost your salary). Between 2018 and 2019, the average data scientist salary grew from $95,404 to $106,298, representing more than 11 percent growth, along with a 7 percent growth in job postings. The average time to fill data scientist roles is 46 days. That growth and demand is directly attributable to industries collecting more data (such as finance), as well as companies recognizing the value of analyzing it in order to enhance corporate strategy. Specifically, businesses looking to hire data scientists in high volumes in 2019 included Bayer, Capital One, Facebook and Amazon. Python, machine learning, and Big Data topped the most-requested skills. That means flesh-and-blood data scientists will primarily focus on the thorniest, most nuanced challenges involving their companies’ datasets; employers will certainly ask about those capabilities during any job interview.
Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer
Average Salary: $91,098 Growth: 5.0 percent Defining skills: Selenium, Atlassian JIRA, Automated Testing, Performance Testing, Regression Testing Distinguishing skills: Scenario Testing, Apache Jmeter, Unit testing, JUnit, TestNG Quality assurance engineers ensure that company standards are met at each step, no matter how fast and complicated the project. QA is so central to software-building that those technologists who specialize in it can command a generous salary: $91,098 on average in 2019, representing an increase of 5 percent from 2018. The salary for these professionals is also matched by the time to fill: 39 days on average. Some of the top skills requested for QA engineers include Selenium, Java, SQL and Python—which is unsurprising, considering that Java and Python are two of the programming languages that a vast majority of apps are built in, and SQL is a vital part of most database work (Selenium is an open-source framework for testing web applications). Top employers in the market for QA engineers include Apple and Amazon. Article provided by www.Dice.com Dice is the leading career destination for tech experts at every stage of their careers.

Expressing a Commitment to Disability Inclusion
Page 11
E
xpressing commitment to a diverse workplace welcoming of the skills and talents of people with disabilities, both internally and externally, is one of the easiest ways to foster a disability-inclusive culture. Examples include equal opportunity statements that specifically mention disability on company websites, statements by top company leaders, advertisements featuring people with disabilities, articles in employee newsletters about disability-related issues and more. Successful approaches large and small employers have used in this area include the following: • Developing and communicating policy statements and other illustrations of the company’s commitment to inclusion of workers with disabilities. (For example, “Business is becoming increasingly global. As [COMPANY NAME] continues to expand, our differences— from our culture and work habits, communication style and personal preferences—are becoming even more essential to our business strategy. We are working hard to create an environment in which all employees are valued and respected, including those with disabilities.”) • Establishing an enterprise-wide team consisting of executives, managers and employees with disabilities to support and advance the recruiting, hiring, retention and promotion of individuals with disabilities. This team may also function as a disabilityfocused employee resource group (ERG) or affinity group. •M aking (and publicizing) the business case for employing qualified individuals with disabilities. (For example, framing the issue in communication with managers, employers, etc. in terms of return on investment and direct and indirect benefits to the company and its employees; stressing that enhancing diversity by employing people with disabilities recognizes changing demographics of the workforce; improving employee engagement, productivity and reduction of costs; and enhancing retention and advancement).

• Including disability as part of all of the company’s diversity policies and activities. This includes using the words “disability” and “people with disabilities” in statements defining the company’s diversity policies, inviting disability organizations and people with disabilities to the company’s diversity events, and recognizing that people with disabilities are part of the company’s other diverse communities (including racial and ethnic minorities, veterans and the LGBT community). • Affirming in policy statements the company’s commitment to equal employment opportunity for people with disabilities and taking affirmative steps to employ, retain, and advance qualified individuals with disabilities at all levels. • Encouraging workers with disabilities and other employees to identify barriers and individual and systemic concerns without fear of reprisal, and also providing mechanisms to allow them to provide this information anonymously or confidentially. • Establishing a universal policy providing workplace flexibility and accommodations for all applicants and employees, with and without disabilities, including the use of telework options, if appropriate. 7. Take pride in making something real.
When so much of our lives are digital today, there’s something fulfilling about making something tangible that you can hold or use. Depending on your job, you can make products that are used in everyday life or you see out in the real world. You could also take pride in making products that help others such as medical devices, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and more.
Contrary to popular belief, manufacturing jobs are not all repetitive, assembly-line style tasks. 8. Stay active.
Not everyone is interested in sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. If that sounds like you, good news – many manufacturing jobs keep you moving, active, and collaborating with others.
9. Get involved in a personal interest.
Since manufacturing is used in so many different industries, you could find a career working in an area that matches one of your personal interests. For example, if you are a motorsports fan, you could work in automotive manufacturing. Or if you like technology, you could help build the next big electronic device.
10. U se creativity and problem-solving skills.

4 Practical Steps to Finding Passion at Work
the thought of going to work five days a week for your foreseeable future feels like a cruel life sentence, then you're not alone. According to Gallup, 70 percent of all Americans are completely disengaged in their jobs.
The United States seems to be a nation of timecard-punching zombies waiting for the weekend. But this doesn't have to be the case. You can have happiness, passion and love for your job, starting today. Here's how:
Stop complaining and tart appreciating.
Warning: this step will be difficult. There are things about your job that you legitimately can call "bad," and having a healthy venting session can be a much-needed pressure release that helps you get back to the business of being awesome. But complaining is usually just a needless exercise in negativity that compounds your bad mood and makes you feel worse. Instead of complaining about something at work, ask yourself, "Are there any aspects of this that I can appreciate?" or "What about my job made me smile today?" If you ask yourself questions that have positive answers, you set yourself up for feeling good when you might normally feel grouchy and annoyed. You may have to dig deep to find things to appreciate about your job, but if you work at it, being in a positive state can become a habit. Once you start actively looking for positives, you'll be blown away by how quickly your perspective can shift and how much fun it can be to discover all the little nuggets of happiness at work.
Get clear on what you want.
People often feel unhappy at work because they feel stuck. However, those people probably can't tell you what their plan for the future is because they are so wrapped up in their right-now that they have no energy left for their future. That is a recipe for stagnation and frustration. You have to give your future at least as much energy as you give your present if you ever want to see it come to life. Try this exercise to get your energy shifting from the right-now to the next year: write on a piece of paper "I add value to the world because," and start listing all of your strengths and why you're valuable. Next, get a clear vision of what you want your next year to look like. Do you want to have a different job? Travel? Help the homeless? Teach someone to read? Write a book? Start your own business? Get a promotion? Move to a different department? Whatever it is that you want to do, write it down. Lastly, create a plan of action and do it. The point is to have a target to shoot for and a plan to accomplish it. Google what you need to get started. Shift your focus from where you are to where you want to be. Once you have a goal and a plan, being at work won't feel like a prison sentence. It'll feel more like a tool to help finance your journey to your next step -- because even dreamers gotta eat. Turning your frown upside down isn't going to happen overnight. But with time and practice, you'll find lots of ways to make your days at work easier, more fun and more fulfilling. This ultimately will aid you in moving on to something bigger and better. Focus on your future and use the right now to prepare for what you want, and your days will be filled with magic.

How to Hire Safely in The Age of COVID-19
ith the outbreak of coronavirus sneaking into nearly every headline (this one included) and every conversation, humanity is realizing how much we’re drifting into uncharted waters…make that getting trapped in a powerful, inescapable current toward uncharted waters. We’re only beginning to understand the far-reaching implications while adjusting to the immediate effects. The stock market resurgence we’ve recently enjoyed has all but vanished. The normalcy of three weeks ago feels like a different lifetime as we watch not only national borders shutter for the foreseeable future, but also many of our neighborhood diners and coffee shops. And an entirely new term has entered our collective vocabulary: social distancing. If we do end up waiting 12 to 18 months for a vaccine, as some models have suggested, we may be looking at social distancing not only in the shape of sitting six feet away from others but also long-term fully remote workforces. Many have been dealing with the fear and uncertainty with humorous memes of introverts everywhere celebrating. But as we adjust to what could be our new normal, how are companies planning to move forward, and help maintain stability, for their workforces?
5 Tips to Hire Safely During the Coronavirus Outbreak
How Companies Have Adjusted Their Hiring Efforts During the Coronavirus Outbreak
LinkedIn has given candidates the option to either move forward with scheduled interviews virtually or postpone them until it’s once again possible to meet in person. But considering how we may need to adjust how we work not just for the next three weeks, but the next 18 months, it’s unlikely that companies can postpone all hiring efforts until it is safe to resume in-person interviews. In fact, a few of the U.S.’s leading companies have already adjusted their hiring processes. Amazon and Google, for example, have gone a step farther than LinkedIn. Rather than postponing their hiring efforts, they’ve moved nearly all in-person interviews to web-based ones.
We’ve looked at how forward-thinking companies, including a few of our clients, have adapted their hiring processes and paired it with our experience of virtually crowdsourcing hiring efforts to create a list of tips for hiring safely in the age of COVID-19.
1. U se a secure, centralized system for all hiringrelated tasks.
This way all parties, including current employees, vendors, and candidates, can use a webbased system without installing any software and putting your company at risk.
2. E xpand your use of webbased sourcing techniques.
Now is a great time to go beyond job boards and social media as your only virtual sourcing tools. Get ahead of the staffing challenges that may result from extended social distancing, including stay-at-home orders, by considering new, innovative sourcing and recruiting tools. Many have been designed to take place remotely, including Crowdstaffing’s cloud-based remote

hiring network and vendor management system for contingent hiring.
3. F orego onsite interviews, opting instead for video interviews.
If you don’t have one already, secure a video conferencing tool that will allow your hiring managers and recruiters to schedule and host candidate interviews virtually.
4. Make onboarding digital.
As companies begin to require employees to work from home, it goes without saying that new employees will have the same expectation. To ensure that onboarding goes smoothly, move new employee paperwork to digital, e-signature forms. And maintain as much a sense of normalcy as you can. If you’d normally schedule a team lunch to welcome new members, for instance, invite them to meet over food in a virtual hangout.
5. Keep working environments safe and clean.
Of course, some sectors, like medical, eCommerce, warehousing and transportation, are booming and need to hire for jobs that cannot be done remotely. In these cases, provide onsite workers with a COVID-19 Mitigation Kit that complies with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, comprised of: • Personal hand sanitizer • Disinfectant to regularly wipe down their work areas
• Tissues • Face-mask • Hygiene gloves
During these uncertain times, more and more companies have been shifting their workforces to work from home. Many processes and tasks formerly done in cubicles, offices, and conference rooms, are now moving to virtual workspaces. As a fully remote company since inception with cloud-based software that helps businesses virtually source, hire, and onboard candidates, we’re happy to help however we can. If you need help remotely sourcing and hiring candidates, especially more flexible contingent labor, request a demo today. We’ll also be happy to discuss which tools we use to communicate with and manage our remote staff, so feel free to reach out. Article provided by Crowdstaffing.com

chool closures and hybrid learning models have forced educators, parents and students to adapt to new forms of learning; the impact of this is not to be underestimated. Teachers and parents around the country have expressed concerns about the accessibility and quality of education under these conditions.
Fortunately, new tools and educational resources are being made accessible to help tackle these concerns. "Teacher of the Year‚" and author Michael Bonner is sharing resourceful ways for educators, students, families and communities to address some of the common challenges associated with distance- and hybrid-learning. 1. S TUDENTS: Create Personalized Workspaces— When students have a lack of comfort, stress has a way of compounding at an exponential level. To combat this, focus on the things that create a productive and inviting learning environment, like creating a workspace that is functional, fun and organized. Using science tri-folds and heavy-duty tape, parents and kids can create private cubicles that can be propped up on any surface and customized to their liking—be creative and look to bring things into the space that will keep your child energized and motivated. 2. BE PRODUCTIVE: Start Your Day Early
Y
Want to be productive at work? ou are probably thinking, “I do not have enough Then start your day early. rest, how can I afford to wake up early?” I had
the same thoughts before. After a while you will realize you cannot be productive unless you rise early. Time is finite. Each of us has only 24 hours. Each of us has finite energy. How well you balance both will be how productive you can be, at work or at home. I have 3 young kids and my own business to run. Trying to balance how much work I put into my business, how much time I spend with my family and yet have time for my hobbies is all about how I can be productive with my time. You want to be productive at work or at home? Here's what you should do.
1. Cut Off Television
I used to tell myself, I need the break. So, when the kids sleep I turn on the cable and watch whatever programs that catches my fancy. Often, I find myself not watching, just channel surfing. And I don't end up watching a full program. I decided one day to just give up on TV as it makes me sleep late and wake up tired. If you want to be productive, cut off TV. You are better off reading a book. Without TV, I have managed to finish many books which I have bought but never read.
2. Limit Internet Use
The other big distraction that can make you sleep late is the internet. Probably because you will be checking your emails, updating your blog, Facebook, watching Youtube, etc. Try limiting the use of it at home, or switch it to the morning session. Nowadays, I check all my personal emails early in the morning. When I get into work, I find myself less tempted to check personal emails and such.
3. Know Your Priorities
Really, it is all about the choice you make and the priorities you have. If you know it is competitive out there in the corporate world, how can you be a better worker than the person who is also aiming for the position above you? How can you do more whether to impress or to get the relevant person’s attention?
4. Is It Always Fun, Fun, Fun?
People who oppose to rising early typically have these excuses. I need personal time. I need to catch up with my friends, I need to know what is going on in the world. But really, most of these are just excuses for having some fun. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I am not saying giving it up. I am saying, there is a proper time and place for everything. Each activity has a price tag on it. Do one and you can’t do the other. The choice is yours. Whether it is catching up with friends till late night or falling behind in your work.
5. Rest Early, Rise Early
You want to be productive? Rise early, read more books, have more energy, be more focused and set standards for others to catch up. It’s as simple as that. Article provided by Long Yun Siang www.career-success-for-newbies.com

Understanding the Benefits of Diversity for the Healthcare Workforce and for Patients
iversity: It’s important in life, it’s important in culture, and it’s incredibly important in healthcare. So important, in fact, that lives literally depend on it. Think of the countless individuals who enter hospitals and clinics every day looking for help. They include people from every race, creed, gender, and age—a melting pot of humanity. And to best communicate, understand, and treat those patients with the best care possible, it’s vital they see themselves within the healthcare workforce. But what makes diversity in the healthcare industry so important? And how should the healthcare industry achieve that diversity? In this article, we will attempt to answer some of these critical questions. Continue reading to learn more about the meaning of healthcare diversity, its benefits, and examples of its successful application in the real world.
What is Diversity in Healthcare?
Diversity in any workplace means having a workforce comprised of multiple races, ages, genders, ethnicities, and orientations. In other words, it refers to when the medical and administrative staff of a healthcare facility represents a wide range of experiences and background. In modern society, healthcare diversity can refer to a number of qualities, including but not limited to the following characteristics: • Race • Ethnicity • Gender • Age • Sexual orientation
• Religion • Political beliefs • Education •P hysical abilities and disabilities
• Socioeconomic background • Language • Culture
Even military service is considered a unique background and experience that should be included in diversity. Espousing diversity in healthcare can lead to cultural competency, the ability of healthcare providers to offer services that meet the unique social, cultural, and linguistic needs of their patients. In short, the better a patient is represented and understood, the better they can be treated. 1101 26th Street South Great Falls, MT 59405

Why is Healthcare Diversity So Important?
Diversity in the workplace carries a host of benefits for healthcare employers, their staff, and their patients. Those benefits include:
Higher Employee Morale
Diversity creates a stronger feeling of inclusion and community for healthcare workers, which makes the workplace feel safer and more enjoyable.
Better Care for Diverse Populations
A healthcare staff should be as diverse, if not more diverse, than the patient base they are treating. This helps ensure that no matter who walks through the door, there is someone on staff who can identify with them, communicate with them, and better serve their individual needs.
Higher Employee Retention
This goes hand-in-hand with improved morale. The happier and safer healthcare workers feel in the workplace, the longer they will stay.

Page 23
Better Recruitment
A commitment to diversity helps when recruiting new healthcare workers and administrative staff. It allows you to cast a wider net to attracted new talent and it offers a stronger hiring proposition for candidates who may consider working at your hospital or clinic.
Stronger Individual Motivation
When there is a lack of diversity, minority healthcare workers may feel stifled or unable to express their unique talents and personality traits. This is a natural inclination for people when they are more concerned with fitting in as opposed to “being themselves.” That added pressure can lead to increased stress, reduced morale, and it may event inhibit them from speaking up when their perspective is needed most. A diverse work environment sends the message that a worker’s cultural and ethnic background is an advantage that should be respected, if not celebrated.
Better Problem Solving
A wide range of perspectives can lead to more creative solutions when solving problems during an emergency or even during routine patientcare. Allowing for new ideas and diverse perspectives can also lead to greater innovation and operational excellence.
Better Results
As illustrated by our section on healthcare diversity statistics (below), diverse healthcare teams get better results, period. The data show us that medical teams who embrace diversity provide better healthcare. Final note on the benefits of healthcare diversity— It’s worth mentioning that while diversity is important, diversity without inclusion is ineffective. Not only do healthcare teams need to represent a variety of backgrounds, but each member needs to be given a voice.
What are the Risks of Lacking Healthcare Diversity?
Just as healthcare diversity has its advantages, there are major risks that can be attributed to the lack of diversity.
Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health are committed to excellence in the delivery of patient care, educating the health professionals of tomorrow and discovering new knowledge. As one of the most distinguished medical institutions in the country, our history is filled with outstanding people and accomplishments. Communication Breakdown
Be it the result of a language barrier, differences in philosophy, differences in cultural norms (& expectations), or even cultural bias, lack of diversity can lead to communication breakdown with patients. And when patients cannot fully communicate or express their needs, dangerous mistakes can occur.
Limited Perspectives
Lack of healthcare diversity can lead to limited perspective when providing patients with medical care, psychological treatment, and social support. It can stunt innovation and creative thinking, but more importantly, it could impede critical observations surrounding a patient’s diagnosis, medical history, or other socio-economic factors that may affect their health and well-being.
Lack of Role Models
Mentorship plays a critical role in our medical system. Doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and administrative personnel will always need the support of a mentor to guide them in their respective professions. It’s

important for healthcare workers to have role models they can look up to and emulate throughout their careers. A lack of diversity can make it difficult for minority healthcare workers to find mentors with whom they identify and learn from. In turn, this can thwart their professional growth and their ability to provide the best patient care.
Lack of Future Diversity
Albeit an obvious consequence, it is an important one to the future success of any healthcare organization. The less diverse your medical staff is today, the harder it will be to foster it within your team tomorrow.
Bias
Bias does not always have to be explicitly expressed within a healthcare setting for it to become a problem. Bias can still impact decisions made for patients when it is embedded in the policies and procedures of a healthcare organization. This is referred to implicit bias within a system. Greater diversity can stymie the destructive effects of implicit bias in patient care.

Disparities in healthcare outcomes by ethnicity are unfortunately a real problem. For examples, studies have shown that: • African-American women with breast cancer are 67 percent more likely to die from the disease than are Caucasian women. • The mortality rate for African-American infants is almost 2.5 times greater than it is for white children. • Hispanic and African American youth are substantially more likely to die from diabetes than white populations. • Even when controlling for access-related factors, such as patients’ insurance status and income, some racial and ethnic minority groups are still more likely to receive lower-quality health care. It can be inferred that one of several reasons for these disparities may be tied to a lack of diversity in healthcare. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, • Hispanic populations are significantly underrepresented in all of the occupations in Health Diagnosing and Treating Practitioners occupations. • Among Non-Hispanics, Blacks are underrepresented in all occupations, except among Dieticians and Nutritionists (15.0 percent), and Respiratory Therapists (12.8 percent). • Asians are underrepresented Speech–Language Pathologists (2.2 percent), and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) (4.1 percent). • American Indians and Alaska Natives are underrepresented in all occupations except Physician Assistants, and have the lowest representation among Physicians and Dentists (0.1 percent in each occupation). What our research tells us is that wherever diversity is encouraged and cultivated, businesses (hospitals included) perform significantly better. • A study by the firm McKinsey and Company entitled “Why Diversity Matters” found that genderdiverse companies are 15% more likely to outperform those non-gender-diverse companies, and ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely to outperform companies with minimal diversity. • Diversity even has an effect before a medical worker

enters the field. Studies have shown that students who study within a diverse student body and faculty make better doctors. • “We argue that student diversity in medical education is a key component in creating a physician workforce that can best meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population and could be a tool in helping to end disparities in health and healthcare,” said coauthor Paul Wimmers, an assistant professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. • There are also findings that support the position that racial diversity in higher education is associated with measurable, positive educational benefits. In short, the numbers tell us that diversity leads to better care, better employees, and better results.
How to Promote Diversity in Healthcare
It may be true that a greater burden of the responsibility for establishing healthcare diversity falls on hospital administration and HR. After all, those departments control much of the hiring, advertising, and recruitment within their respective institutions. However, healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, medical assistants, etc.) can also play an important role. Here of some of the ways members of a healthcare staff can promote diversity in the workplace.

4. Diversity for More Than Diversity’s Sake
Always remember, the point of encouraging diversity in your hospital or clinic isn’t to have a diverse hospital or clinic… it’s to have a better hospital or clinic. As explained above, a diverse workforce can provide a rich array of experiences and understanding that can only enhance the patient-care experience and draw more success to your hospital or clinic.

Workplace diversity training courses are common and can easily be found online but finding diversity training geared specifically for healthcare may take a little more digging (particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic). Check with your hospital’s human resource department for their recommendations. Or if you’d like to get started right away, try an online program such as Diversity Science’s Inclusion Training for Healthcare.
Diversity in Healthcare: Examples from the Field
Sometimes the best action you can take to promote diversity and creating an open work environment is by simply listening. Listening (without interjecting or suggesting fixes) helps each of us understand new perspectives, opens our minds to unseen needs, and shows coworkers or patients that their opinion matters.

A Brooklyn medical center that created a thorough in-house cultural training program for its employees, one that ranges from language to cultural philosophy to religious observances. Another example comes from the website thedoctors.com, which tells the story of a doctor who was able to use techniques learned during cultural and diversity training to reach across language barriers to help a patient heal.
A 62-year-old Dominican patient presented with hypertension. In the past two years, she had been seen by several physicians, had multiple tests to rule out any underlying etiology, and tried a variety of medications to control her blood pressure. Despite these efforts, her blood pressure remained poorly controlled. The patient, whose primary language was Spanish, had limited English skills but refused an interpreter at all clinic appointments. It appeared that the patient was nonadherent with taking the antihypertension medicine, taking it only periodically when she felt tense or stressed. Further inquiry by the physician revealed that the patient was illiterate and did not understand the complex medication regimen she had been given. The physician was able to explore the patient’s explanatory model for hypertension using the [diversity training] approach. The patient strongly believed that her hypertension was episodic and related to stress. She didn’t take her daily antihypertension medication because it didn’t fit her explanatory model. The physician was able to reach a compromise by explaining that, although her blood pressure goes up during stressful times, her arteries are under stress all the time, even though she didn’t feel it. Taking medications daily would relieve the arterial stress but would not help with her emotionally stressful episodes. The physician was able to negotiate with the patient to add relaxation techniques to her daily routine.
Creating diversity in healthcare isn’t just important, it’s vital. Diversity is Vital to Patient Care
Creating diversity in healthcare isn’t just important, it’s vital. Language, culture, and ethnicity can easily create barriers, and in an industry where lives hang in the balance and every second could mean the difference between life and death, delays and obstacles can quickly become deadly. But diversity isn’t something that can be created overnight. It requires a leadership dedicated to increasing cultural awareness and inclusion. It requires co-workers who are willing to take the time to learn about each other. It means being willing to identify and address personal biases. And it means boldly opening ourselves up to discomfort for the greater good Because of their diversity training, a doctor was able to provide care of our patients. in a way that had before been impossible, and because of this, a life was Article provided by ProvoCollege.edu quite possibly saved. Fifteen Great Reasons to Hire Veterans
W
by Althea Warburton
hen you hire veterans, you're choosing from a diverse pool of employees who demonstrate a wide range of knowledge and skills. Veterans possess a commitment to excellence, demonstrated integrity,
and a drive to perform the best work possible. With them, you'll find a level of discipline, maturity, and training that is rare in civilian employees. The following are just a few of the things you benefit from when you hire a vet. 1. Diversity
Veterans represent many different walks of life and are accustomed to working with all types of people regardless of race, gender, religion, or ethnicity.
2. Leadership
Veterans are trained by the military to accept and carry out responsibility for resources, tasks, and their own behavior. This special training consists of inspiring leadership in others and motivating others; setting examples; and giving clear and detailed directions.
3. Core Values
While each branch of the military has its own specific set of core values, they all adhere to the same basic principles: commitment, integrity, accountability, and "service before self". Veterans understand the importance of these principles in building a strong team.
4. Team-Player Attitude
Veterans understand the value of genuine teamwork, and how diverse individuals can cooperate to achieve over-arching goals. Veterans know that real teamwork grows from a sense of responsibility to their colleagues.
5. A bility to Conform to Structure and Policies
Every organization needs structure and rules to prevent chaos and eventual breakdown. This is especially true in the military, which is why individuals in the service are trained to follow specific rules in their work environment. Policies and procedures ensure safety, stability, and productivity. Veterans have an understanding of the value of accountability, and perform their work from this unique perspective. They have learned to demonstrate loyalty to their leaders and units.Â
6. A bility to Handle Stress and Meet Deadlines

A typical requirement of military training is that service members be prepared to perform. They must be able to not only do their job, but do it in an efficient manner. Setting priorities, accomplishing missions, and meeting schedules are ongoing responsibilities of individuals in the military. With this responsibility comes added pressure and stress, but military personnel are trained on how to deal with these factors in a constructive way.
7. Advanced Specialized Training
When you hire a veteran, you can be confident you're hiring someone who has received advanced training in their field. Veterans have been designated a specialized focus, and have completed skill-building education for their individual jobs. They may have also received advanced and cross-referenced training on financial, computerized, engineering, medical, technical, administrative, personnel, or security types of work.
8. Planning and Organizational Skills
Veterans understand that careful planning and workload management are crucial to most military operations. Thoroughly considered objectives, time sched-

Veterans offer a level of skill, professionalism, and work ethic that is rare in today's workforce.
9. Technology Skills
Today's military personnel use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Working in the armed forces requires a high degree of technological skill and education to keep up with increasingly complex systems. Military members are frequently among the first to adopt new technology. Many vets have been kept abreast of international trends relating to business, and can bring both technological savvy and a global outlook to your corporation.
10. Self-Direction and Motivation
The military is one of the most demanding institutions in the world. The rigorous training military members receive breeds highly motivated employees who set high goals for themselves and achieve them. Veterans know how to analyze and resolve difficult and complex problems without constant guidance from superiors. When you employ a vet, you're hiring a self-starter who is driven to get the job done right the first time.
11. Time Management Skills
Why is Unity Health where you want to be? Because we are who you are—dedicated, stable, and loyal to our community.
Most veterans know how to multi-task, and how to accomplish individual  tasks in the most efficient manner. Many have triumphed over adversity, so they know the importance of dedication and perseverance in achieving goals.
12. Immediate Contribution
The experience veterans have gained in the military make them valuable team players from the very first day on the job. Veterans are used to and enjoy new challenges and opportunities to demonstrate initiative. They are nimble thinkers, and are generous in giving praise to those who earn it.
If dedicated, stable, and loyal describes you, we welcome you to our Unity Health family.
3214 EAST RACE AVENUE SEARCY, AR 72143
13. Government Relocation Assistance
Veterans are given government-paid relocation when leaving active duty. The exact amount of this assistance varies by individual, but it can still help lower your company's expenses when hiring. With relocation assistance paid, your employee search doesn't need to be limited to the local prospects; you can seek talent anywhere you like.
www.unity-health.org/careers We consider applicants for all positions without regard to race, color, religion, creed, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
14. Tax Breaks
One of the biggest benefits of hiring veterans is the number of tax credits available to employers. Tax credits run between $1500 to $8000.00 per veteran hire, and are counted as a one-for-one dollar credit against the employer's payable income taxes.
15. Background and Security Clearance
Hire a vet, and you can gain greater peace of mind knowing you've employed a safe, drug-free individual. Over 90 percent of military members have had extensive background checks run for various security clearance levels. Hiring a veteran reduces the chance your company will be put at risk due to illegal behavior. This will save you a good deal in background investigation costs. If you're seeking employees to fill some vacancies at your company, consider hiring a veteran. Vets bring a unique skill and mindset to your organization. They offer a level of skill, professionalism, and work ethic that is rare in today's workforce. When you hire someone who has been employed in the military, you can be sure you're working with someone who has a desire to do the best job possible. Hiring veterans is an economical solution that will strengthen your work team and give you a clear edge on your competition. Article provided by constant-content.com
