W

hen I was about ten years old, my mother, my two sisters and I lived with my aunt and uncle for a brief time. This was my first experience living with a person with a disability. My uncle was born sighted, but by the age of eight or so, a genetic condition was reducing his sight. By the age of ten, he was completely blind. In his 30s when we moved in with him, he was an accomplished stock broker. I remember being amazed at how well he managed for a man who couldn't see and I learned a lot from him. Note: This was in the 70s, before personal computers and the internet. I learned how brilliant braille was, and that there were watches where the face opened so he could touch the hour and minute hands and know the time. I quickly learned to close the kitchen cabinet doors so he wouldn't run into them and get poked in the eye (yes, I admit, I learned the hard way). I learned that the best way for him to read was with books on tape. He had a machine where he could speed up the reader... boy could he listen fast! One day, he let me go with him to his office and I learned that there was a ticker-tape machine that printed out the stock information in braille! I remember that he was very good at his job and was financially quite successful. I guess the main things I learned from Uncle Richard is that having a disability just means you do things a bit differently than those without a disability, and goals and dreams are very much attainable regardless.

Engineers have a unique mix of qualities that make them stand out from the crowd. Many students reading this page will already have them – yes, maybe you were born to be an engineer, and a great one at that. The greatest inventions in the world simply wouldn't have happened without engineers. Jet engines, railways, cars, computers, smart phones, the internet, 3D-printing etc. – they needed special people to create them. They needed great engineers. But what makes a great engineer? What is it that makes them able to innovate and invent? What qualities enable them to have such a positive impact on the world?

For many people who are used to working at the office, what makes WFH a big adjustment is the fact that lines between work and home become blurry or worse, disappeared completely. Limit Distractions by Setting up Physical Boundaries

For example, in June this year, six undergraduate students from the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM) and the School of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) at Wits University took part in a virtual event for the ISC Student Cluster Competition alongside 82 other students from around the world. They were tasked with testing and optimizing several applications currently used by scientists and researchers in the analysis of COVID-19 data in real time and the effects of global warming around the world. Students were also given two additional advanced coding challenges by the judges to assess whether they could successfully adapt to the fastchanging world of artificial intelligence. Celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month The 2023 NDEAM theme is “Advancing Access and Equity.”

Held every October, NDEAM is a fitting time to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.

DEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation every year. The Campaign for Disability Employment encourages organizations of all sizes and in all industries to participate in NDEAM. For specific ideas on supporting NDEAM, visit the website dol. gov/ndeam. Suggestions range from simple, such as displaying a poster, to comprehensive, such as implementing a disability education program. Educate Employees

It is critical that companies committed to disability inclusion effectively and regularly reinforce that commitment to employees. 4 Reasons Why Military Veterans Make Great Cops

Whether you’re a police agency looking for new recruits or a military veteran looking for a new career, you can be confident that veterans can make great cops. However, many police executives unfamiliar with the military and the way they build their service members into professionals may pass on a great law enforcement candidate due to a lack of experience with these men and women. Some police administrators may even have a preconceived notion that combat veterans may be a liability and keep the veteran from a fair crack at wearing a gun belt someday. After 30 years of serving the military and law enforcement communities let me share four qualities that make military veterans excellent candidates for careers in law enforcement.

1. TEAM PLAYERS Military veterans are not only trained to contribute to a team in order to thrive but they also learn that they have to count on a team to survive. Service members that have trouble with this concept are identified and extra training follows. Troops who can’t participate as a team member will meet various fates but they won’t be allowed to hold their unit back.

Identifying the problem service member who may be on your hiring list is simple. The obvious answer is the military records provided with his employment packet but the best answer is contacting his military supervisors. A call to his former unit and a couple short conversations with his former First Sergeant or Platoon Sergeant or Platoon Leader will provide you an honest assessment of the veteran’s personal qualities.

This a great way to measure a veterans qualities and attributes because activeduty military leaders say exactly what’s on their mind and they will not hesitate to share the good with the bad. When it comes to law enforcement, working as a team player with other cops and following orders from supervisors are important factors for professional success.

Service members typically enter the military at a young age. They are taught to be leaders at every rank. Often, by the time they are 21 they may be leading a squad or holding a highly skilled position within their unit. The military spends great time and effort training their leaders. Promotions come with exceptional leadership schools that are not available in law enforcement. Their ability to function as leaders will provide an agency a valuable resource that is hard to come by. Military veterans often will be the quiet professional in a squad, never complaining and always pushing forward.

2. COMMUNICATORS

From the time they exit the cattle wagon at boot camp to the time they exit the military, service members are taught to communicate confidently and concisely. They learn to speak with efficiency and clarity because survival may depend on their message and how it’s delivered. That’s why so many veterans who recently have departed from the military will speak with short and concise sentences. I have witnessed law enforcement leaders mistake this quality in a veteran recruit for a bad attitude. Don’t allow your lack of exposure to veterans influence your decision to not hire one. Any good cop on the beat is a cop that can communicate, among other things. We all know that those officers that struggle with communication quickly find themselves in all sorts of trouble.

Whether a veteran has combat experience or not, they were surely exposed to stress with expectations of success and nothing less. Service members are exposed to stress at levels that aren’t imaginable for those who have never served. Boot camp initiates the recruit to sleep deprivation, physical stress and mental stress and it doesn’t ease up until you retire or leave the service. Law enforcement is filled with hours of calm and moments of extreme stress. Military veterans won’t

The hiring process in law enforcement is a complicated balance of various elements that develop a final candidate list. I don’t believe the military veteran is a better police candidate than a college graduate nor do I think a college graduate is more qualified than a military veteran. What I can assure you is that all things being equal military veterans may be great law enforcement candidates for their ability to function as part of a team, communicate, police with maturity and perform under stress. Critical missions, including national security missions, require qualified professionals to do the work, and the federal government faces the same challenges as the commercial sector in attracting and retaining the right workers. Attracting diverse workers into national security and intelligence community careers poses additional challenges, and it’s one of the reason the intelligence community, in particular, works hard to provide reporting on both the numbers and the growth in diverse employees within the intelligence community, including women.

t’s no surprise that the very application process itself can frequently be a barrier to entry. The next struggle is to retain those same workers after they’ve been hired. Whether you’re considering a government career or barreling deep into the application process, here are three tips for women pursuing government careers.

1. FIND A MENTOR

The COVID-19 environment may seem like a barrier to this process, but it can actually make it easier than ever. When someone knows they’re committing to a phone call or video chat, it may be easier to get a higher-level person to say ‘yes’ to your ask for an informational interview. And many organizations are going virtual with networking events which often even include break-out sessions or one-on-one chat options.
