n today’s world, with technology moving forward faster than we humans can keep up, we are being bombarded with more information than we can fully process. Often we have to choose what to focus on and what to avoid to dodge an avalanche of information that can leave us feeling stressed and overwhelmed, especially at work. Taking a break from technology all together seems to help a lot. Like many people, I work in front of a computer screen daily, so turning off the computer and the television and even my phone for just 30 conscious minutes a day, I can tell you, I feel better after having done so. I’ve also found that creating work/life balance is necessary for reducing stress and making sure I don’t become too resentful or frustrated with my job or my home life. Many next-generation leaders who are not willing to sacrifice fulfilling personal lives for the sake of their careers are addressing the work/life balance need all of us have. Flexible work hours, telecommuting options and even nearby childcare are options that some companies are taking. With these options, employees can decide what “balance” means to them and they also have the power to take action to improve that balance. These options can attract and retain healthier, happier employees and increase productivity and profits. Ask your employer what options he/she has for promoting a work/life balance and make sure to prioritize what’s most important to you. Studies show, taking time to nurture yourself can make you a better employee.

Use Numbers To Quantify Your Work Experience and Get A Job by D.S. Hildebrand

H

ave you ever noticed how much we depend on numbers to help us place in perspective what is going on in our lives? This is especially true when it comes to the world of business. Consider how operational numbers such as profit, revenue, return on investment (ROI) and labor cost contribute to a company’s bottom line. Then there are labor market numbers such as those discussed in the Fox News report, “US added 295,000 jobs in February as unemployment rate dips to 5.5 percent.” The article cites that U.S. employers added 295,000 jobs in February, the unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent, and average hourly wages rose by 3 cents. As a job seeker, many of these numbers are important to you. However, even more important are the numbers you can use to quantify your work experience and to demonstrate to employers why they should hire you.

FOCUS ON WHY YOU WOULD HIRE YOU

The number one reason employers hire people is not just to do a job, but to perform in a way that will further the organization’s goals. Employers look for people who can help the company be successful. For many people who hire others, there is a shared belief that past behaviors predict future performance. For this reason, it is beneficial to use your resume to capture what you have achieved in your career. However, it needs to be more than just a bunch of flat sentences about all the tasks you complete each day. Instead, think about why you would hire you. What skills, abilities and experiences do you have that an employer can bank on? Many job seekers may do what you do. Set yourself apart from your competition by expressing it in numbers to make it more significant.

CREATING A RESUME THAT QUANTIFIES YOUR QUALITIES

Let’s look at customer service, for example; this is a department frequently subjected to metrics such as average handle time (AHT), daily call volume and quality control measurements. Consider the number of customer calls you take or the number of orders you process during a normal eight-hour day. If the department AHT goal is 420 seconds per call and your average AHT is 390, this is important information you can share with the hiring company to further show how your skills exceed the company’s goals. Maybe you single-handedly coordinated the annual sales meeting for 50 sales reps and their significant others, on time and under budget. Perhaps you saved the company money, found an alternate method of doing something, or were one of three people who received a special award for an achievement. You may have been part of the team that went 365 days without an on-the-job accident. Even if you spend your entire day typing reports, you can quantify your typing speed, number of pages completed, your accuracy rate and the number of reports you finish each week compared to department goals or your co-workers’ achievements. There are many ways to quantify what you do. The fact is that numbers further define your work experience and help to tell the complete story about your skills and abilities. Utilizing numbers allows you to communicate to hiring companies what you are truly capable of achieving and why they should hire you. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Professional and Ethical Behavior in the Workplace E by Sam Wheeler

very profession encompasses certain standards of behavior that should be adhered to. This is termed as professional ethics and it usually includes honesty, integrity, confidentiality, accountability and loyalty. Understanding the ethics of your workplace can boost your effectiveness and increase your worth as an employee. Here are guidelines on how to put your best foot forward at work:

BE HONEST

Being honest does not simply mean refraining from lying; it also pertains to integrity. Your moral compass guides you to do the right thing especially when faced with a dilemma. Try to address your mistakes at the earliest opportunity. Take accountability for your actions and do not try to cover up your indiscretions. While you are on the job, refrain from office politics or gossips that could affect your credibility. Having a clean record make you gain respect from your co-workers and employer. Honesty is the foundation of trust.

BE A TEAM PLAYER

Being a team player can help propel you to the top. Employers prefer team players when choosing candidates for promotion because they are usually more dependable. It is therefore important that you work well with your peers, supervisors and customers. Make sure to meet deadlines when you are working on a collaborative project because you might hold up the entire group’s output. Appreciate other people’s work processes and be open to their inputs and suggestions. On the other hand, you also need to be candid. You don’t have to agree with everything your team members say. Communication is the best way to find a good middle ground that everyone finds acceptable.

FOLLOW THE ETIQUETTE OF BUSINESS MEETINGS

Paying attention to business meeting etiquette will be beneficial for your professional development. It will help you to improve your professional image. You should be an active participant when it comes to business meetings. Review the agenda and all other ground work in advance so that you can contribute your ideas. Respect your colleagues and listen to what they have to say. If needed, take notes for future reference. You should always be on time for work or for scheduled meetings. Punctuality shows that you give respect to others’ time and that you are interested in what they have to offer. Make sure to plot your schedules on your calendar and try your best to follow them to the letter. Interrupting a speaker or escalating your voice to prove your point is rude and gives away a wrong impression. It is also best to abstain from mobile phone conversations during the meeting. Avoid causing distractions and remember to be courteous to everyone in the room. Do not give the impression that the meeting is unimportant to you.

LEARN TO MANAGE YOUR TIME

Time management is an essential leadership trait. It shows that you are organized and that you are able to effectively work on multiple tasks on any given day. You should learn to properly juggle the tasks that are thrown your way. Prioritize your projects and set short and long-term goals. Eliminate procrastination and focus on accomplishing the tasks at hand. If you are good with time management you can reduce your stress and not feel rushed.

BE COURTEOUS AND MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

It is good practice to break the ice and greet your co-workers on a regular basis. A friendly “hello” coupled with a little positivity can go a long way when it comes to dealing with your co-workers. People in general like to be acknowledged. It breaks walls and enables improved communication and interaction. Your attitude defines you. A positive vibe will help you gain the respect and affection of your peers and managers. A “can do” attitude also infects the people around you and influences them to do their best on their projects.

HELP KEEP THE WORKPLACE SAFE

A company can benefit from having a safer workplace. It can avoid incurring additional costs for treatment of injured employees, higher insurance premiums and repair for damaged infrastructure. A healthy and safe environment also improves the reputation of a company. Companies enforce policies to ensure a safe work environment. You can help by reporting violations to these regulations. If you happen to witness a misconduct done by a fellow co-worker, do not let it go unnoticed. Make sure to speak up if you notice that safety measures like fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are not properly maintained. It is your responsibility to keep yourself and others safe. Professional and ethical behavior is as important as professional knowledge and competence in the field. Maintaining high ethical standards will help elevate your career to the next level. Those who are ready to sharpen their ethics can convey greater confidence, integrity, competence and professionalism. DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE: Article provided by Constant-Content.com

5 Ways to Help Your Diversity Team Perform Better W by Bruna Martinuzzi

hen we think of diversity, most of us first think of race, ethnicity, gender and age. We think of the legendary Louis Armstrong’s lyrics from his song, “What a Wonderful World,” that allude to the notion: “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces of people going by.” Yet, diversity in organizations is a much broader spectrum than that. It encompasses diversity in passions, talents, personality, motivations and experience, to name a few. But diversity is not about focusing on how we differ—as author Ola Joseph puts it, it is about “embracing one another’s uniqueness.” Leaders who recognize and celebrate the uniqueness of their people help their teams perform better. Harnessing the richness of diversity can lead to better problem-solving and decision-making and increased creativity and innovation. Here are some inspirations to help you raise your diversity awareness so that you can capitalize on its value.

Tom Kelley, who is also the general manager of the design company IDEO, describes the 10 personas that are crucial for establishing a culture of innovation. These include, for example, The Cross-Pollinator, who has the ability to draw associations and connections between seemingly unrelated concepts to break new ground, or The Hurdler, whose skills lie in being a tireless problem-solver who enjoys tackling something that’s never been done before. Here’s a OPTIMIZE THE INNOVATIVENESS brief introduction of the Ten Faces. BE A TALENT HUNTER.

Imagine having a reputation for being a talent hunter, for being known as the type of leader who walks into a room and looks for what’s right with people. Extensive research has proven that focusing on enhancing people’s talents rather than eliminating their weaknesses is the most direct route to individual and organizational improvements. A primer for this is Marcus Buckingham’s and Donald O. Clifton’s book, Now, Discover Your Strengths, which helps readers identify their talents and build on their strengths as a way to boost performance. Talents are defined as people’s naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling or behavior that can be productively applied. The book also provides access to StrengthsFinder, a Web-based assessment that helps you identify the five most powerful signature themes, or talents, for you and your team. When we shackle people with labels of what they are not good at, we diminish their confidence in their ability to succeed. Resolve to view your people as a reservoir of talent rather

than a problem to be fixed. As Peter F. Drucker once said: “Nobody ever commented, for example, that the great violinist Jascha Heifetz probably couldn’t play the trumpet very well.”

HELP PEOPLE LIVE THEIR PASSIONS.

Passions are pursuits that fully engage our hearts and minds; they fuel us, and they are different for each person. A company that understands the importance of supporting their employees’ individual passions is Amex Bank of Canada. As explained in the article, “Amex Ignites Employees Passions—for Living and for Work,” the company has instituted a program called “Realize the Potential,” which recognizes and supports the people who are taking the time to identify their pas-

sions and realize their potential—whether it is through charity work, taking a sabbatical for adventure travel or being mentored by the company’s top people. With this program, Amex is sending a message to their people that they want to know the whole person, so they encourage people to tell their managers about their passions—and to explore them while working within Amex. Accommodating employees’ passions is a smart thing to do. It engenders loyalty and the enthusiasm spills over into one’s work.

EDUCATE THE ORGANIZATION ABOUT “MICRO-INEQUITIES.”

This idea comes from Douglas R. Conant, retired president and CEO of the Campbell Soup Company. In a Harvard Business Review article, “How to Make Diversity and Inclusion Real,” Conant defines “microinequities” as the common behaviors that undermine a culture of inclusion. Conant set up courses to raise his managers’ awareness of these behaviors. An example of this is the language used. “Too many male managers,” says Conant, “may rely too heavily on sports analogies—a habit that might not be inclusive for women and non athletes. We wanted to make sure that people learned to listen, speak and act more inclusively.”

KNOW WHAT MOTIVATES PEOPLE.

If you want to motivate people to give you the best that they have to offer, consider that not everyone is motivated by the same things. In his book Drive: The

May 2015 Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink shows that external rewards (what he calls the carrot-andstick approach) incentivize performance when the work is simple and straightforward and involves only mechanical skills. But for nonroutine jobs, when the work entails even rudimentary cognitive skills, external rewards don’t work. Instead, there are three crucial factors that motivate people to perform better: Autonomy: People are motivated by a desire to be selfdirected. Mastery: People have an innate desire to become better at what they do. Purpose: People want to have a sense of deeper purpose in their work. Consider these motivators and give people the flexibility to choose the way they want to complete their work; give them opportunities to master their craft, to develop and grow and, finally, inspire them with a deeper purpose, a higher ideal than simply making more money for the company. As Pink says, don’t unhinge profit from purpose. Guard against viewing people through a narrow lens and be wide open to the broad landscape of diversity.

Guard against viewing people through a narrow lens and be wide open to the broad landscape of diversity. As Max de Pree, retired CEO of Herman Miller, said: “We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing and inclusion.” What a wonderful world, indeed. Why Data Scientists And Marketing Technologists Are The Hottest Jobs of 2015 by Travis Wright

If

you haven’t heard of these job titles, don’t worry — you will soon. After all, there was a time when “social media manager” was a job title people didn’t take seriously, and now these pros can earn up to six figures. But what exactly does a “Data Scientist” or a “Marketing Technologist” do? You can tell from the titles alone that they mix information with high tech, which is exactly what every single business needs in order to thrive and surpass the competition. Let’s dig a little deeper into these booming jobs and see just why they’re the dark horses picking up speed.

DATA SCIENTIST

Is it mad science that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these experts averaged $102,190 per year — in 2012? AOL Jobs feature current jobs ranging from $120,000 to $170,000, and there’s a reason behind those growing six figures: Not many people can do it. These specialists are a crucial part of “competitive intelligence,” which is a new and quickly growing industry. The actual job description can vary from company to company, but the most common task is mining data (of course). “Big data” was a big buzzword in 2014, but it will always remain a vital part of any company. Data is useless if it’s not “mined,” which means optimally collected, analyzed, organized, and activated. The larger the company, the more likely they are to have dedicated competitive intelligence divisions, but data scientists don’t need to hold out for businesses to keep up with the trends. About half of all job postings are for permanent, full-time employees and half are for contractors. Just like any other job in the tech field, you can make “more” as a contractor but won’t have benefits like health care, paid vacation, employer-contributed retirement plans, and the like. However, no matter what your employment status, you may be able to score a virtual office or telecommuting position.

WEIRD SCIENCE (SO FAR)

There’s a big problem with this career: supply and demand. If you’re a qualified data scientist or working on getting there, this is in your favor. There simply aren’t enough skilled data scientists to fill the growing demand for them. McKinsey and Company reports that by 2018, there will be 140,000-190,000 job postings that go unfulfilled. Worse (for the companies), there will be 1.5 million managers needed to optimize available data. In other words, the next three years is a veritable gold mine for data scientists. However, this disparity won’t last for long. Remember when search engine optimization (SEO) was in the same boat? Now you can’t swing a black hat (trick) without smacking an SEO “guru.” The quicker data scientists can hone their skills, get into one of those many positions, and establish themselves as a leader, the better. In 2011, the University of California San Diego listed “data mining and analytics” the fourth most popular career path for graduates. Need more proof that data science has all the right chemistry? Obviously, data companies like Ensighten, LiveRamp, and Think Big Analytics are hiring lots of data scientists, with Think Big hiring over 100+ data scientists, this year. But it’s not just data companies hiring data scientists. If The Cheezburger Network is hiring Data Scientists, you know it’s serious. LOLCats don’t play when it comes to money (or laser pens).

equal opportunity employment journal MARKETING TECHNOLOGISTS

The issue is this: Too much demand and too few professionals. It’s not easy or fast to be great at both marketing and technology.

Half marketing expert, half technology pro, this is the best hybrid since the centaur. It’s too brand spanking new to even be listed by BLS, but it’ll likely be there in the next couple of years. However, there are job postings aplenty on sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and even Craigslist — with salaries as varied as the job descriptions. Since this is such an up-and-coming career path, if you’re good you can basically make as much (or as little) as you like. It’s not unusual to see a number of marketing technologists raking in six figures, especially if they’ve established themselves as a genuine expert or thought leader in the field. But what the heck do they actually do? According to a Gartner report, 81 percent of “big firms” (making over $500 million in revenue each year) have chief marketing technologists on their payroll. One year ago, that figure was just 71 percent — and it’s expected to rise eight per-

cent by 2016. One of the authors of the report, Laura McLellan, defined these roles as “part strategist, part creative and part technologist,” comparing CMTs to the likes of CTOs and CIOs. They’re in charge of “every aspect of marketing,” said McLellan, including branding, content marketing, and managing the data. Unsurprisingly, this is all done with technology. “The CMO needs a senior trusted advisor skilled in the art of evaluating and implementing technology-enabled solutions.”

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME…

Throw “chief” in front of any title and there’s a lot more responsibility (and hopefully pay). However, there have been modifications of marketing technologist titles popping up, such as Business Information Officer Marketing technologists, no matter what you call them, align business goals with technology. Period. They’re deciding or suggesting which technologies their companies should implement/adopt, manage them, and ensure

May 2015 marketing strategies are optimized with the help of tech. However, there’s the same issue as with data scientists: too much demand and not enough professionals. It’s not easy or fast to be great at both marketing and technology. It’s kind of like grammar school: A lot of kids leaned more towards creative courses while others preferred STEM. Asking for a marketing technologist is like asking for a kid who’s equally good at and equally enjoys AP Math and AP English. It’s possible, of course, but relatively rare. This is an excellent position for up-and-coming marketing technologists to be in. In 2015, companies are still learning the incredible value of these professionals — and they’re willing to pay for it. Establish yourself as the best in the business now, and you’ll get to cherry-pick your offers and hold serious negotiating power when it comes to salaries. What is a Database Administrator?

A

database administrator (DBA) is an IT professional that is needed by many businesses to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of their database and the important information stored within it. A properly running and well-handled database is crucial to the successful operation of any business, and, as a result, DBAs are in relatively high demand in today’s job market. A career as a DBA could be a very smart and rewarding choice for you. As a DBA, you will be responsible for making sure that a business’ database aids rather than hinders its day-to-day operations. This will include keeping all of the data well-ordered, secure, clear, consistent, and up-to-date. For a more detailed look at what a career as a DBA will entail, read on below.

THE DAILY TASKS OF A DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

By Eva Kurilova

Depending on the type of company you work for and on your specific role within the company, there are a variety of tasks you may be asked to perform when working as a DBA. First of all, you will likely be asked to install a business’ database if it doesn’t have one already, or you may be tasked with installing a new one when the time comes. Along with installation, you may also be tasked with configuring the database to suit the needs of the particular business you are working for, such as adapting it for payroll and sales functions. Then, as the business you work for grows and changes, you may need to change the function and design of the database, install new applications, or upgrade it in numerous other ways.

A DBA will often be in charge of the administration of the database and with creating administration policies. This will also involve monitoring the database, keeping a close eye on how the system is responding, and performing maintenance when needed. Finally, one of a DBAs most important tasks is to keep the database and the information contained within it secure and safe from hackers.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR?

Most employers are definitely going to require that their DBAs have at least an undergraduate degree. Your best chance at being hired as a DBA will be to obtain a degree in the areas of computer science, database management, information technology, or some other closely related field. You will not need to do any graduate work in order to begin your career as a DBA, but you may want to look into getting an MBA if you are interested in standing out from other job candidates and earning a higher starting salary. You can further help yourself stand out from the field by earning certifications in various database management systems.

While your first order of business should be learning your job duties and focusing on doing a great job, it is also important to make the most of the benefits you have earned. Making the right moves now can make a huge difference later on. If you are just starting a new job, you can use a simple checklist to make sure you are getting all the benefits you have earned and making the most of your new opportunities. This checklist can also help you fit in at your new job and earn the respect of your colleagues and supervisors.

If you are eligible for a company 401(k) you should consider participating as much as you can. It can be difficult to set money aside, especially if you are coming off an extended period of unemployment, but try to put in at least enough to qualify for the full company match. If you do not put enough into the 401(k) to qualify for the company match, you are literally turning down free money. You are entitled to claim an exemption for yourself, your spouse and your dependents, but you need to think carefully before completing this form. The more exemptions you claim the less Federal income tax will be taken out of your paycheck. That means a bigger bottom line now, but you could end up owing additional taxes when you file your return. If you claim no exemptions, your paycheck will be smaller, but you can qualify for a larger refund when you file your taxes. It is important to look at your cash flow

Your new employer may also provide a standard level of disability insurance, with an option to buy additional coverage. Disability insurance through an employer is generally quite inexpensive, so it is worthwhile to look at the coverage and buy extra if you feel you need it. Those benefits can boost the value of your paycheck substantially, help you save money on taxes and allow you to be a better and more well rounded employee. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

To find the right career, there are lots of things to think about and actions to take. Careers Out There is filled with career videos to help you tackle this challenge of finding the right career. The other day we looked at 5 things to think about to help answer the “how do I find the right career for me” question. Today we’re looking at 5 actions you can take to find the right career. 1) INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWING

Informational interviewing is kind of a fancy way of saying “talking to people.” It’s basically what we do on the videos here at Careers Out There: sit down with real professionals who do the kind of work you’re interested in and get real advice on what it’s really like, how to break in and how to succeed once you’re there. It’s a great way to develop relationships, network and learn. You can start today by asking your friends and relatives to help you set up some meetings with their contacts. We’ve created a video guide on informational interviewing to help you master this great tool so you can find the right career and grow your circle of contacts. I highly recommend you check it out – it’s worth it.

2) SUMMER JOBS

If you’re spending your high school and college summers just hanging at the beach all day, your tan might win contests but you’re missing out on the opportunity to build your skills, and discover what kind of work you’re good at as well as what you do and don’t enjoy doing by actually doing it. Summer jobs also provide you with hands-on experience that lets you see what type of environment you do or don’t want to be working in. Even jobs that aren’t what you’re looking to do when you finish school can help you to develop your skills and get a better sense of what you do and don’t want in your future. I had a few summer jobs before I started doing internships. I worked as a camp counselor at an overnight camp in Bemidji, Minnesota, clerked at my uncle’s law firm in Chicago and started my own business teaching swimming lessons around the Chicago suburbs. Each of those experiences developed my skills and taught me about myself: I learned that I love and excel at teaching and helping others (that’s why this site was born); I learned that I didn’t want to work in a law firm (I became a lawyer but found other ways to use my degree); and I learned that I liked and was able to develop relationships and work for myself. Just like in my situation, you too can learn a ton from summer jobs that will ultimately help you find the right career.

3) INTERNSHIPS

Whether you get paid or have to work for free, internships are an amazing way to test out a career path by getting to work for a company for a set period of time, often before you’re actually qualified to get a job there. Generally for a semester or summer, internships give you a chance to get a taste of the career path as well as a feel for what kind of work you’re good at and what you like doing. It’s a great opportunity to experience the “real world” and see what the environment, culture and politics are like in an office on the path you’re interested in.I started doing internships when I was 20 to break in to the music business. My first-ever internship was an unpaid internship at SPIN magazine in New York City. I lived in an NYU dorm in the heart of the legendary Village in order to get cheap rent and a meal plan to keep the cost of living down. Although the job taught me that I had zero interest in working at SPIN magazine, I had a fantastic summer. Living in New York City at such a young age and pretending to be a grown-up was a blast that I would gladly relive if I could only get my flux capacitor to work. I learned a ton through that work experience and also got to write a CD review that got published in an issue of SPIN with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the cover. If you want to get internships in whatever fields interest you, you should talk to the counselors in your school’s career center. You can also reach out to the human resources (“HR”) departments at the companies you want to work for and ask what they have available. Another great resource is The Intern Queen. The Intern Queen has a variety of internship opportunities available through her site. She also happens to be smart and full of energy – we had a good chat on the phone last week and I feel good about recommending her site as a resource.

Generally for a semester or summer, internships give you a chance to get a taste of the career path as well as a feel for what kind of work you’re good at and what you like doing. 4) CAREER TESTS

Career tests are a great way to discover your strengths and interests. Some of the best career tests I would suggest include the MyersBriggs® MBTI® personality type assessment,StrengthsFinder 2.0, and iStartStrongTM inventory. To take these tests, you can visit your school’s counseling offices, career centers or even go to a private career counselor. You can also take two of the career tests here. The iStartStrongTM inventory is particularly great in helping you find your first career. I’m a huge fan of the Myers-Briggs® MBTI® personality type assessment, especially for anyone considering a career change. When I decided to leave the music industry, I took the MBTI and found it to be incredibly helpful in better understanding myself and in pointing me towards my second career: legal recruiting. (For those who know the test, my type is on the border of ENFP and ENTP). Either way, I highly recommend taking career tests to help you find the right career.

5) VOLUNTEER WORK

Whether it’s volunteering your time to help a local non-profit charity whose cause you believe in, help your neighborhood park district, or work on behalf of whatever religious institution you belong to, volunteer work gives you an opportunity to do a good deed while getting work experience that you might not otherwise get. This experience could uncover skills and interests that you didn’t know you had. After my mom died of lung cancer, I joined the board of a cancer research non-profit. As a volunteer for them, I’ve brought in corporate sponsors to help pay for some of our fundraising events. I’d never sold corporate sponsorships at any of my jobs but, thanks to volunteering, I got to add that skill set to my toolbox and discover that I really enjoy it. Volunteering also gives you exposure to a wider variety of people, which broadens your network and helps you further discover the type of people you do and don’t want to be working with. Volunteering is a great way to help you figure out what you really want to do. Marc Luber is the founder of CareersOutThere, a website exploring what different careers are really like through day-in-the-life videos helping you find a career that fits. He started the site after years as a legal recruiter serving the Southern California area. Marc is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Chicago-Kent College of Law. On Being a Seismologist

F

by Sara Royster

or many people, earthquakes cause fear. But Graham Kent isn’t afraid. He studies and learns from earthquakes as a seismologist and director of the Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno. Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and related phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions. Earthquakes occur when the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust shift and release energy in the form of waves. These seismic waves, which move through the Earth’s molten core, can cause destruction on the surface by damaging structures, warping roads and bridges, and injuring living things. Graham’s work is about more than just earthquakes, though. Seismologists also apply what they learn from studying the Earth’s structure and other geological events, such as tsunamis, for commercial and other purposes, such as detecting nuclear explosions.

Seismologists’ tasks vary, depending on their area of focus. Some seismologists conduct research, for example; others directly observe earthquakes. Still others use their expertise in practical applications. Their work also may combine these different areas of focus. Seismologists often have additional responsibilities, regardless of their focus. In overseeing the lab, for example, Graham manages budgets and completes administrative work. “A lot of what I do involves paperwork, which takes up a large amount of time,” he says. Research. Research seismologists study the internal structure of the Earth and try to determine factors that contribute to or foretell an earthquake. They publish their findings in scientific journals or present them at academic forums—or do both. Their work helps guide engineering and building practices to improve safety wherever earthquakes are common. In addition to conducting their own projects, research seismologists usually teach college- or graduate-level courses and supervise students’ work. Universities and government entities, such as the U.S. Geological Survey, employ most of these seismologists. Observation. Seismologists who focus on observation record and analyze data from the thousands of earthquakes, both big and small, that occur around the world every year. They often work in observatories or analysis centers, which are usually built and supported by universities or national governments. For example, Graham’s laboratory studies all earthquakes that occur in Nevada. The laboratory staff, which includes seismologists and students, maps each earthquake and collects associated data, such as its precise location and mag-

nitude. This information is communicated to relief workers in order to aid residents in the affected area. Applications. Instead of studying earthquakes, some seismologists apply their knowledge to commercial or other uses. For example, they may use sound waves to aid the energy industry in finding oil deep under the Earth’s crust. Seismology also can help detect nuclear explosions. These explosions create seismic waves that can be identified at great distances, so seismologists help monitor whether countries are complying with nuclear test bans.

HOW THEY PREPARE

To become a seismologist, you need specific skills and a graduate degree. Graham suggests also having a range of interests. “You need to be a bit of an explorer, a bit of an engineer,” he says. “It’s important to have a wide toolset and be able to take in all kinds of information and make something useful out of it.” Skills. Critical thinking and problemsolving skills are essential for seismologists. Their work often involves collecting and analyzing data to develop solid conclusions. Seismologists should also work well independently, sometimes with limited information. “There is no sign that says ‘Dig here!’ in our work,” says Graham. “You need to be comfortable striking out on your own and working without specific direction.” But just because seismologists are selfdirected doesn’t mean they work alone. Interpersonal skills are imperative for seismologists, because they are often part of a team that includes other scientists, researchers, and students. And seismologists need good communication skills to write papers, present their work, and speak clearly about complex topics. Seismologists also must have physical stamina and enjoy working outdoors. Education. How much education prospective seismologists get depends on what they want to do—but they should plan to earn a master’s degree if they want to do fieldwork, says Graham: “To work as a seismologist in the field, a Ph.D. is too much and a bachelor’s degree is not enough.” During fieldwork, seismologists travel to earthquake-prone areas to collect data and physical specimens for lab analysis. Coursework usually includes subjects such as geology, math, and physics. Knowledge of data analysis software is also important. Most seismologists who observe earthquakes or apply their knowledge commercially have a master’s degree in geophysics or a related science. However, some entrylevel positions may be available for workers with a bachelor’s degree. Other areas of study, such as engineering, are also acceptable. Seismologists focusing in research or

teaching usually need a Ph.D. Conducting fieldwork and getting laboratory experience, such as by using data to create computer simulations of earthquakes, are good ways for prospective seismologists to prepare for a career. These experiences may be available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Summer camps may also allow students to apply their knowledge by collecting and analyzing their own data.

Interpersonal skills are imperative for seismologists, because they are often part of a team that includes other scientists, researchers, and students. WHAT TO EXPECT

Working as a seismologist can be interesting and rewarding, but, like any job, seismology has its frustrations and difficulties, too. Employment and wages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect data specific to seismologists. Instead, BLS counts seismologists among geoscientists, a more general category that also includes geologists and oceanographers. In May 2013, there were 34,690 geoscientists, excluding hydrologists and geographers, according to BLS. Their median annual wage was $91,920, compared with a median wage of $35,080 for all workers. Within the occupation of geoscientist, wages vary by industry. For example, the median wage for geoscientists, excluding hydrologists and geographers, in federal, state, and local government was $79,770 in May 2013; the median wage for this occupation in oil and gas extraction was nearly double that: $142,860. Work environment. Seismologists work primarily in areas of the United States where earthquakes are common, such as the West Coast. Those in the energy industry may be employed in oil-rich states, such

as Texas. Seismologists usually work for long, irregular periods, including nights and weekends. Other working conditions vary, depending on the focus. Research seismologists spend much of their time in the lab, usually at a computer. Seismologists who focus on observation often trek long distances, sometimes in extreme weather and through difficult terrain, to find suitable locations for collecting data. And those in the energy industry may work around complex, dangerous drilling equipment. Challenges and rewards. Among the perks of being a seismologist, says Graham, is working on projects that keep communities safe—sometimes in unexpected ways. For example, Graham’s seismology lab is leading an effort to install potentially lifesaving fire cameras on mountaintops in northern California, an outgrowth of seismic monitoring equipment his team set up previously. “The cameras allow firefighters to watch over areas that are difficult to access after lightning storms,” he says. “They can detect forest fires long before they become a threat to people.” But some projects require seismologists to get permits for installing cameras or seismometers, instruments that measure seismic waves and collect other data, on protected federal lands. And that task is sometimes challenging. “We can’t always get permits for what we want to do,” says Graham. “It can really stifle our research.” Even if permits are available, securing the funding needed for a project can be difficult. Seismologists apply for grants from governments or nonprofit organizations by submitting a description of the project and its costs. But money for these projects is limited, and seismologists compete with other scientific projects for the same funds. They learn to stretch whatever resources they have. Still, Graham feels excited about the prospects of working in seismology. “We’re in a time period when we can do amazing things,” he says. “The best part is when you get the permit, and you get the money that you need, and then you make an incredible discovery. I feel lucky to be a part of that.”

Seismologists also apply what they learn from studying the Earth’s structure and other geological events.

Job Options for Employees 50+ by Michelle Riklan

job expert at AARP. So you need to start working on what you want to do at 55, if you want to get that new job by 58. Alternatively, a bridge job can help you phase into retirement. You can work with your current employer on a part-time capacity or adapt a flexible schedule, until you’re ready to retire. Not sure what you want to do yet? I’ve looked up the top job options for employees 50 and over.

BOOKKEEPER OR SECRETARY

W

hile the unemployment rate is going down, albeit slowly, many older workers remain unemployed six months to a year, way longer than young employees with less work experience. It’s as if older workers are past their “sell-by” date. Unemployment is not the main problem though; it’s just a part of the big picture. According to AARP, about 1.6 million unemployed workers over 55+ want to go back to work. That’s a 67% increase since 2007. These people want to go back to work for many reasons, to build their retirement funds, find a more meaningful job, pay debts, cover medical bills, or to just keep active and avoid boredom.

BRIDGE JOBS AND THE TIME IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN A NEW CAREER

If you want to move into a new career, do it now. Because, “it takes at least 3 years to make a successful career change,” says Kerry Hannon, national best-selling author of Great Jobs for Everyone 50 and resident

The typical bookkeeper is responsible for balancing accounts, creating financial reports, handle invoices and monitor a business’s budget and bank accounts. A secretary’s job description, however, varies from industry to industry, but you can expect the typical paper handling, scheduling, and admin support. While not really an office job, a virtual assistant’s work is somewhat similar to that of a secretary. The median pay according to Indeed. com is $35,000, however, virtual assistants work at home, and many of them have a flexible schedule. Their job description varies but it usually includes admin support, customer service, online errands (such as purchasing movie tickets or making dinner reservations), scheduling and virtually anything that could be done online.

posture and breathing. Aspiring instructors need to be physically fit, well versed in their chosen exercise, fully trained and most importantly, certified by an accredited institution. Like the other jobs, instructors enjoy a flexible schedule. Unlike bookkeepers and secretaries, however, you won’t be tied to your desk. Aside from teaching in gyms, you can also work in fitness camps or spas.

TECHNICAL WRITER

Have you ever wondered who wrote the manual for your MacBook Air? A technical writer wrote that. They compile technical and complicated information, and then transform it into lay language even your grandpa can understand. They’re mostly responsible for writing product manuals and instruction guides, but their work isn’t limited to that. Many tech writer jobs are in the Science, IT and Engineering industry but the job itself has applications in many fields. The typical writer works hourly or per project, but parttime and full-time positions are also available. To score this job, you’ll need good writing skills and the ability to distill complicated information into easy to understand concepts. A degree or working background in a technical subject also helps.

DO I REALLY HAVE TO Median pay for this job is $52,000 SWITCH CAREERS?

TUTOR

while the highest pay tops at $73,000, according to Indeed.com. Private tutors have flexible schedules, most of them working around their student’s class schedule. You can also join a school’s tutoring center or apply at a private tutoring company. Tutoring jobs could be seasonal, depending on what you teach. For instance, SAT tutors and college admission test tutors are usually in demand a few months before the respective tests. Science and Math tutors, however, are pretty much in demand the whole school year.

INSTRUCTOR FOR PILATES AND YOGA

Yes, you can get paid while keeping fit and having fun! Yoga and Pilates instructors guide group classes or individuals through 60and 90-minute muscle stretching, deep breathing, exercise sessions. They guide participants through each pose, randomly making rounds to check participants for proper

No, not really. You can find the same job in a different industry, if you’re creative enough. Here’s an interesting story from Hannon: Don Covington used to be a Navy pilot. When he retired, he could have worked for a defense contractor or even flown commercial jets. Instead, he went on to join the circus. He’s now working as the Company Manager for Big Apple Circus, a moving troupe of about 150. Yes, it sounds like a huge career jump. But really, he’s just using the same leadership, management and organizational skills he learned working in the Navy. The circus is a different playing field, but Covington didn’t need to learn extra skills to get that job. You don’t have to reinvent yourself. Try looking at your skills from a different angle – a different industry, a different position, a different location. Article provide by Riklan Résumés and Career Services. Does Your Resume Need An “Objective Statement”?

Page 17

by Michelle Riklan

I

got this interesting question about resumes last week: “I always thought a resume should have an objective statement. Is that true?” Well, Kristen, career experts are still divided on that matter. Ten years ago, the career objective, aka objective statement, was a standard part of any resume. This statement mostly explained the job applicant’s wishes or target in his career. Personally, however, I never use objective statements in my client’s resumes. They are applicant-centric and only talk about what the candidate wants. Typical objective statements read like these: “Seeking a challenging position as a Certified Public Accountant, where I can utilize my skills” “Looking for a rewarding career in the sales industry with opportunities for growth as I learn more and improve my performance” What do you notice about these statements? It’s all I want this, I want that. There’s nothing there that might interest the employer.

A career objective doesn’t set you apart from the competition. Who doesn’t want a challenging and rewarding career? Who doesn’t want career advancement opportunities? Everyone wants those things. When a recruiter or hiring manager reads a resume, they’re not going to go out of their way to find out what you want in life! The question they want answered is, “Who are you and what can you do for me?” So while it looks impressive or formal to add a career objective, it’s a waste of prime real estate in your resume. A career objective doesn’t set you apart from the competition. Who doesn’t want a challenging and rewarding career? Who doesn’t want career advancement opportunities? Everyone wants those things. Instead, create a compelling profile section that showcases your unique value. This section is your value proposition statement. Grab the recruiter’s attention right off the bat. Develop a hook to convince them to continue reading. Keep in mind that a recruiter will most likely start at the top of the document and therefore, the top third of the page is crucial. Make it easy on your reader. Create a header that defines who you are and follow that with a hard-hitting paragraph that gets the reader excited and wanting to know more. If

you’re confused about what to do with your career— or what to do next with your career—and you haven’t gained insight from taking assessments, there is another way. You can learn more about yourself, gain insight into the best career for you, and plot out how to get there through creating stories.

Plotting out a career story can help a person conceptualize the steps needed to attain his or her desired career.

A small but growing collection of research, for example, has looked at using story and narrative in career counseling. “Psychotherapy is based on the premise that we each create our own life story from the time we are born,” wrote Jack Maguire in The Power of Personal Storytelling. Career counselors are increasingly using narrative approaches to encourage clients to build their career stories. Authors Christensen and Johnston suggested in the Journal of Career Development that developing narratives can significantly help individuals to know what to emphasize in their career planning. They proposed that counselors perceive clients as both authors and central characters in their career stories, which they are “concurrently constructing and enacting.” Constructing their career story, the authors said, enables clients to discover connections and meaning in their careers that they might not have otherwise. When individuals imagine their desired future stories, they facilitate their belief that their storied, envisioned future will play out in reality. The authors’ research indicated that, indeed, clients who could tell these future stories tended to be “more effective in bringing those plans to fruition,” while Maguire characterized the narrative-therapy process as revising or replacing negative stories with positive ones. Instead of answering the question traditionally explored in career counseling, “Who am I?” by listing traits such as interests, skills, aptitudes, and values, narrative approaches articulate the job-seeker’s preferred future. Larry Cochran, who has devoted an entire book to the use of narrative in career counseling, notes that the narrative approach emphasizes “emplotment,” which refers to how a person can cast himself or herself as the main character in a career narrative that is meaningful, productive, and fulfilling. Plotting out a career story can also help a person conceptualize the steps needed to attain his or her desired career, remind the narrator of career goals, and enable him or her to stay on track in achieving the envisioned career. Following are a number of approaches to exploring your career desires and passions through storytelling. Considerable overlap exists among these story exercises, so don’t feel you need to use all of them. But pick a couple that resonate with you and use them to examine meanings, themes, and patterns in your career to date, as well as to plot out how to attain your career dreams.

WRITE THE STORY OF WHAT YOU WANTED TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP.

Talk about what attracted you to you childhood dream career and how that attraction may have changed over the years. Discuss how your ambitions have evolved. Have you looked up to role models -- people working in your dream career whom you wanted to emulate, people who inspire you? Include them in your story.

TELL THE STORY OF HOW YOU CHOSE YOUR CURRENT CAREER.

What attracted you to this career? Who were your influences? In what ways has your career met or failed to meet your expectations? Chronicle your career to date, particularly noting internal factors -- behaviors, motivations, and attitudes, such as what you’ve liked and disliked about each job. Discuss what you learned in each job that you decided to apply to your next job. For example, I discovered at about mid-career that I was a pretty good manager, but only on a small scale.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON USING STORIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION

If career assessments that yield lists of possible careers have left you cold, consider a story-based approach to career exploration. You just might be amazed at how much you can learn about yourself and how you can design your future through developing your story. As Kerr Inkson writes in Understanding Careers, “By interpreting the past, we use narrative to make sense of the present and thereby see a way to the future.” Remember also that crafting the story of your career is an ongoing exercise in that you will need to reconfigure the story to account for new occurrences in your career and life. Choosing A Career in Public Health

P

ublic health is the perfect field for people who are interested in both science and in helping others. People with careers in public health specialize in serving the public by keeping communities healthy. With disease epidemics becoming an even greater concern in the United States and the world as a whole, public health professionals have a wide variety of fields and jobs to choose from. CAREERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH

There are many careers in public health, but all are focused on keeping communities healthy. Many people in this field work as a community health worker or health educator, who works directly with people to help them adopt behavior that promote health. This could include encouraging people to get vaccinations, teaching them how to prepare food safely, advising on how to prevent catching diseases and more. Public health workers also work with people who have chronic or communicable diseases, such as HIV/ AIDS or tuberculosis, to identify how they acquired the infection, refer them to necessary health services, and educate them on how not to spread the diseases further. They also may work with parents to teach them how to make good health decisions for their children, such as choosing healthier food. People with more education in public health (for example, a master’s degree) are more likely to work for the government or nonprofit agencies. They often work in policy-making, helping to create laws, policies, and recommendations that will keep communities healthier. Whenever you see a recommendation from a government agency, such as a suggested daily amount of a vitamin, a public health professional was involved. With the rise of ebola and other tropical diseases, many public health workers are going into the field of global health. These professionals help to make plans for identifying, treating, and containing global outbreaks of disease. These professionals are very important in modern times, which increased mobility allows rapid and widespread epidemics of disease.

professionals have a master’s degree in public health or MPH. Some also hold additional certifications and licenses. Regardless of their major, public health professionals must have academic background in the following areas: Biology EpidemiologyMicrobiology Informatics and biostatistics Community health Environmental health Social work A major in public health will cover all of these areas. However, there is a variety of college majors that can work in public health as long as they take the correct classes to prepare them for the field. In addition to education requirements, many public health professionals also have extensive volunteer work or job experience. This is often in fields of health or social work. These experiences prepare a public health worker for working in an effective and compassionate manner with diverse people

The government and private agencies are employing more and more public health professionals. Maintaining a population’s health is fundamental to helping a community thrive.

WANTED: Skilled Workers for A Manufacturing Comeback

W

by John Guenther

hen podcaster Adam Carolla, whose father worked for the Lockheed Skunk Works, kicked off a manufacturing event recently, he started with his own personal story of being a ceramics major in high school and afterward working a series of low-paying jobs. “Somebody should have tapped me on the shoulder around 15-and-a-half or 16 and said, ‘You’re no Einstein. It’s time for you to learn how to sweat copper pipes,’” said Corolla. “I could have learned something that was useful that would help me support myself and eventually my family.” “The cause célèbre should be ‘Save shop class,’” Corolla added later. Finding enough skilled workers for manufacturing jobs was definitely a cause célèbre at a Wednesday event, “Champions of Manufacturing” hosted by the California Manufacturers & Technology Association (CMTA), honoring a varied group of California manufacturers, from a 3D printing company to a business Corolla said was dear to his heart, Sierra Nevada Brewing. The first “champion” and founder of Sierra Nevada, Ken Grossman gave a little craft beer history lesson, saying, when he started making his hopforward brew in 1978, there were only 40 total U.S. companies making beer. The brewer also noted that colleges back then still taught skills he needed to build his brewery and “make something himself.” “And I credit that with a lot of my success..just the ability to do a lot of that myself and to understand the processes that were necessary to make something myself,” said Grossman. One of the top issues for manufacturers and many California businesses is filling jobs they have available with workers trained with the right skills. A major goal of the California Economic Summit’s Advancing Manufacturing Action Team is promoting training programs for manufacturing in community colleges and universities that meet the skills requirements that industry needs. The president of a fruit and flavor supplier for yogurt companies (and another “manufacturing champion” of the day), Mike Mulhausen said there’s no reason the state can’t be competitive, as long as governments at all levels create policies that help manufacturers stay competitive. And a strong workforce is one of the reasons he said California Custom Fruits & Flavors has stayed put in the state, besides, of course, the fruit that’s grown nearby. “Even if that wasn’t the case, we’d still be committed to California because we find that there’s a great supply of degreed, technical professionals that we use in our lab and our administrative staff and also a great supply of less-skilled but very dedicated, hard-working production workers,” said Mulhausen. Recent legislation and grant news have given some focus to workforce and manufacturing issues here in California. A Southern California partnership of aerospace organizations recently won a federal manufacturing competition for grant money and support, another goal of the Summit’s Advancing Manufacturing Action Team. On the state budget front, career technical education (CTE) got a shot in the arm with a $50 million one-time boost for California Community Colleges to enhance their CTE courses. As still the biggest manufacturing state in the country, California also has its share of companies on the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing, as shown by another one of CMTA’s “champions,” an Oakland engineering and production company focusing on 3D printing, which will certainly benefit from a workforce with the right skills. “In 2014 we will definitely have some hires here at FATHOM who do not have college degrees, that have come from organizations that have given them specific skill set training and given them an opportunity they may not have had without that specific training,” said co-founder of FATHOM, Richard Stump, in his company’s video introduction at the event. It’s certainly a good idea to highlight a company like a 3D printing manufacturer, if the state is looking to change the image of manufacturing

from the old one of smokestacks into a hightech and good-paying opportunity in the eyes of California students. “We think it’s really important to introduce students at a relatively early age to the opportunity for these kinds of great jobs,” said Dorothy Rothrock, CMTA’s vice president of government relations. “But I have to say, part of our mission here is to improve the image of manufacturing because we are fearful that students don’t see a real future in manufacturing. And we disagree. I think the champions here prove what’s available and, if you’re energetic...you can reach your potential in manufacturing.” At the state level, there’s been some recognition of the importance of manufacturing in the state with the most manufacturing workers in the country. Kish Rajan, director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), was on hand to tout some of the state efforts, like an exemption of sales and use tax on equipment purchased for manufacturing, biotech or biotech-related research and development, starting on July 1 of this year. Rajan also detailed some of the big numbers showing California has been coming back steadily but acknowledged that there is a long way to go. “There are far too many people across California who aren’t experiencing that recovery,” said Rajan. “We have got to work harder. And when you think about that big picture mission, manufacturing without question is an enormous priority and an enormous opportunity for California still to advance that kind of growth and prosperity.” Article provided by www.caeconomy.org

Fake degrees and schools are easy to verify, but this is still rampant in many industries. People fake their academic background for different reasons, not just lack of experience — like Marvin Hewitt, a self-taught physics professor who quit school at 17 because traditional schooling felt too slow for him. Others do it to upgrade their degree to “Ivy League level” or because they’re insecure, as was the case with former Wall Street analyst Jack Grubman.

JOB TITLES (5%)

Fake job titles go hand-in-hand with embellished job descriptions in trying to make fresh graduates look more “experienced.” Don’t bother with this tactic, because recruiters can tell when applicants award themselves with fake promotions. There’s a fine line between highlighting your best assets and lying through your teeth. (Like this thought?Tweet it!) Err on the side of “creativity” instead of flagrant exaggeration, because recruiters can easily see through those lies. Show How You Helped Previous Employers Save Money or Resources Even if it’s just a small savings — like a cheaper supplier you found, or how you optimized the use of cleaning supplies — anything that depicts you as a money-saver will grab people’s attention.

This includes technical skills, job-specific skills and language proficiencies. Skills and technical proficiencies are hard to verify in a simple interview — another reason many applicants get away with fibbing. Sometimes the skills exaggerated aren’t relevant to the job but are embellished anyway to hide a lack of necessary skills and make the candidate appear impressive on paper.

EMPHASIZE TASKS AND PROJECTS BEYOND YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION

(Including Internships and Service Crew Gigs) Having the initiative to work on tasks beyond your job description shows you’re a team player with proven ability to learn on the fly. You’ll be a seen as a problem-solver, not just another whiner good at pointing out problems but terrible at solving them. Label these as “additional tasks” or “additional skills” on your resume, right below the job title and description. Don’t forget to explain how these additional tasks helped your employer.

SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT ON YOUR POTENTIAL

In a study by Michael Norton and Zakary Tormala, associate professors at Harvard and Stanford, they found that candidates across different industries who showed great potential were considered more interesting and promising than applicants with established track records.

Attention all Physicians and Clinicians!

We have openings for multiple Physicians; both General and Specialist positions; Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant.

There’s a fine line between highlighting your best assets and lying through your teeth. Err on the side of “creativity” instead of flagrant exaggeration. Emphasizing your achievements and what you might accomplish in the next few months or years will also draw attention away from a severely lacking professional history. You can easily do this by pairing previous internships, volunteer stints and odd jobs with power words such as: • Volunteered at XYZ. • Mentored (much better word than tutored) children at XYZ subjects. (This shows your ability to train others and manage responsibilities.) • Researched / authored / contributed / analyzed + name of thesis or paper. • Implemented or simplified + any new idea you suggested that was rolled out by a former employer • Other power words include: • Budgeted • Facilitated • Distributed • Improved • Promoted • Maintained

• Dermatologist • ED Certified MD/DO • Family Practice Physician • Geriatric Physician • Hospitalist

• Mental Health Nurse Practitioner • Nurse Practitioner • Pain Management Physician • Physician Assistant

• Psychiatrist • Psychologist • Urgent Care Physician

SHOW CONTINUING EDUCATION INSTEAD OF FAKING A DEGREE

So you don’t have a four-year degree yet, but you’re working on it. Just list the degree and other workshops or courses you’re taking as “ongoing education.” Even if you haven’t mastered a skill, taking a class shows initiative and gives you the chops to converse intelligently on the subject come interview time. You can find free and affordable courses for different skills on your campus or at many online learning websites, like Skillshare and Coursera.

CITE PUBLISHED PAPERS AND SIDE PROJECTS

… and connect them to the job you’re applying for. The subject of your paper might not be applicable to your desired work, but your research and analytical skills will be. The same goes for side projects — explain how they helped you learn to do business, bookkeeping, serve customers or sell. Candidates with excellent soft skills are in demand in every job. Remember, lying on your resume can endanger your career with fraud charges. And if you’re really unlucky, you might get sued for training and salary costs. It’s not worth the risk, especially since there are many ways your resume can stand out without lies or exaggeration. So put your creative hat on and start applying these tips. Opening Eyes to Hiring Military Healthcare

Pelham Medical Center Exciting Opportunities

by Matthe

T

he start of the 21 st century has been unlike any other in American history. The nation has experienced economic highs and lows, and drudged its way through 14 years of war and strife. Millions of brave men and women have sacrificed life and limb to serve this country overseas, protecting the freedom of the American people. They do their job without complaint, exhibiting a steadfast determination to achieve the objectives set forth for them, with little say in the process. Now, with combat troops home from Iraq and winding down commitments in Afghanistan, millions of America’s finest are returning home in search of normalcy. These individuals are returning to a different America, but they bring with them numerous skills and character traits instilled through service and tested on the battlefield. The push to ensure that the nation’s veterans have employment when they leave military service has been underway for years. Regardless of the industry your business serves, there are multiple benefits to hiring veterans as a member of your team. Some of these benefits apply to military members entering any civilian role. Other benefits apply to specific industries. The healthcare industry is an area of the American economy that is under great strain. Just as America’s veterans served their country in war, so too can they serve their country at home as qualified professionals in the healthcare industry.

LOYALTY

It’s this patient-centered focus that led to a national award in

During basic training, all military members are broken down and remolded as soldiers, sailors, and Marines in the US Armed Forces. Values including trust and loyalty are instilled, which become valuable on the field of battle. This same loyalty is not lost when the uniform comes off. Veterans have a unique understanding of the value of loyalty. They know from experience that loyalty adds to the proficiency of a team and builds trust in the workplace. In an economic news release from June 2014, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average company spends $30.11 per hour on average to compensate employees. This cost includes the basic expense incurred for sustaining an employee, but does not include costs such as the training and mentoring of employees learning the job as they go. Given the significant investment businesses make in the average employee, businesses should be looking to hire employees that exhibit loyalty and invest themselves in the company through hard work and dedication.

Veterans understand the importance of schedules, consistency, and devotion to a cause. Businesses succeed or fail not just because of the product or service offered, but because of the individuals supporting the product or service. If your employees don’t exhibit professional maturity, it is hard for the company to succeed. Time spent in the service instills in veterans a lifestyle dependent upon adherence to a schedule and consistent performance. There are no off days in a war zone. When service members bring a slacker’s attitude to training and preparation, they put their lives and the lives of others at risk. For a business,

judging the professional maturity of candidates can be difficult. However, in hiring a veteran your business can rest assured that it is bringing in an employee that understands scheduling, consistency, and a strong work ethic.

PRODUCTIVITY

With so many tech tools in the workplace today, it is important that all employees have a sense of self-discipline. You expect your employees to respect corporate policies regarding Internet usage, social media, and general productivity in the workplace. Today’s economy offers a challenging environment in which your business can ill afford the inefficient work habits and idle time of your employees. When your company is looking to build a culture of productivity and self-motivation, hiring a veteran is a step in the right direction. In order to succeed on the battlefield, veterans have been trained to work efficiently, ask questions when necessary, and exercise self-discipline at all times. The result is an individual that not only has industry-specific skills, but also the soft skills (professionalism, attitude, etc.) needed to succeed in any company.

COMMUNICATION

The biggest challenge facing any business today is globalization. Communication across international and cultural lines is imperative, and military members have the extensive training your business needs to communicate across these boundaries. Many veterans speak more than one language and have traveled extensively. This means that they not only have the ability to communicate in other languages, but understand the nuances of communication with individuals from other cultures. Â As your business deals with globalization, hiring a military veteran positions your company to succeed in a highly competitive climate. These individuals bring a high degree of technical literacy that can streamline communication within your organization. Additionally, veterans have the experience necessary to facilitate accurate and efficient communication with clients from all walks of life.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR HEALTHCARE

The healthcare industry is undergoing a tremendous revolution. Between rapid technological innovation, integration, and workforce shortages, the healthcare industry should be turning to military veterans as a source of highquality talent. Military healthcare professionals use advanced technological tools, adapt to changing procedures, and work tirelessly for the health of others, all while missiles fly overhead, bombs drop nearby, and supply lines face a constant threat. Â Healthcare workers are in short demand at a time when supply is on the rise. Veterans are prepared to hit the ground running in a civilian healthcare setting after spending years working in military healthcare settings. There are a few factors that make military veterans uniquely positioned to transition into healthcare more easily than other industries:

Ways Veterans Can Apply Military Thinking To Everyday Life

V

by Paul Maplesden

eterans know the value of friendship, training, experience and decision making. When you serve in the armed forces, lives rely on everyone working together towards a larger purpose. Military thinking can also be very useful after you have served and veterans can excel in many areas including: Friendship, teamwork and listening and decision making and leadership.

FRIENDSHIP, TEAMWORK AND LISTENING

• Medical standards and patient loads are the same in both military and civilian healthcare settings. • Medical jargon is the same in both settings, as are many of the procedures and protocols defining healthcare. • Veterans come from a high-stress, demanding setting that is more intense than civilian healthcare, allowing them to adjust quickly and make positive contributions. Finally, many veterans have already seen unique and bizarre cases serving in a military healthcare setting. When caring for other military members, veterans deal with injuries, diseases, and other physical ailments that occur with less frequency in civilian healthcare sectors. The next time your healthcare company posts job openings and receives a flood of resumes, take a few extra minutes to scour the pile for the resume of veterans. By no means should you ignore civilians with equal or greater experience. Instead, understand the unique character traits and skills that veterans offer, and remember the benefits listed above as you determine which individual best suits the needs of your company. Article provided by ConstantContent.com

Veterans learn to be part of a team. When you’re in the military, you trust your life to the people around you. In life or death situations, everyone has to do their jobs properly, without question or hesitation. In civilian life, this makes it easier to appreciate how important it is to have a team around you that you can trust. You’re the perfect team member, listening, acting and understanding what’s best for everyone. Veterans become better listeners. In the military, you learn to listen to, understand and obey those with more experience or seniority. Outside the military, this can be extremely helpful as you’re more likely to pay attention when someone has something valuable to add, rather than just trying to get your own opinion across. Veterans value the people around them much more. When you’re trusting your life to a squad mate, that trust creates a very strong bond between you. It deepens friendships, camaraderie and the trust that you place in other people. Outside the military, it means that you tend to hold on to your closest friends, rely on them and develop closer ties with your loved ones.

DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP

Veterans can make quick, confident decisions. Lives can be saved or lost on the basis of a good or bad decision. Military strategy teaches you to make fast, confident decisions based on the information that’s available at the time. One of the great drawbacks

of modern life is having too much choice and procrastinating about the right thing to do. Veterans often find it much easier to make and stick to a decision. Veterans rely on their wits and instinct. The military has come to rely more and more on technology, but the best soldiers trust their wits, instinct and training above everything else. Technology can always go wrong or break down, but if you’ve got the right understanding of the situation and the expertise to deal with it, that puts you in a much better position than those that rely on technology to do everything. This means that you’re often better prepared and more flexible when things don’t go exactly to plan. Veterans understand and manage risk better. In the armed forces, planning, strategy and minimizing risk are vital, and wherever possible you will act to maximize your own strengths and advantages. In your personal life and the world of business, this can mean that you find it easier to understand risk, control it wherever possible and act in the ways that are most likely to be good for you and those around you. Veterans lead by example. If there’s a truth of leadership in the military, it’s ‘Show, Don’t Tell’. The best commanders are those that lead by example, that understand what needs to be done and don’t hesitate to do it themselves. In civilian life, this means that you can demonstrate things to others more easily, and that you often have solid, rational thinking behind your decisions.

Nurses are constantly reminded of the necessity of valuing the dignity and worth of every person. As a result, we become better people. Our souls are healed. We develop communication skills and open hearts which make us more loving members of our own families. We become tolerant, and appreciate the diversity of all of the people on this earth. Perhaps that is the biggest benefit of being nurses. We become more caring, and honorable people. See the nursing core values.

WE ARE NURSES – CORE VALUES

Unlike many professionals who work in careers as bankers, cashiers, or in thousands of other professions, we are nurses. We do not just perform tasks or provide services, being a nurse is part of who we are. We may serve in many different capacities, yet at our centers, we share similarities. As nurses, we are connected to every other nurse in the entire world.

I have been a nurse for forty years. I’ve worked in a diverse array of settings and provided care to people of all age groups. As such, I have encountered many types of nurses. Our similarities outweigh our differences.

Nurses are among the most trusted groups of people whenever surveys are conducted evaluating the public’s views about people who they feel that it is safe to trust. We are good people. of people. We comfort each other and pick each other up when the stresses of care giving are overwhelming. I consider it an honor to be part of the nursing family.

GREATER GIFTS

As nurses we know suffering. We are fully aware of how precious each moment of life is. We learn to live well. Nurses are grateful people. Some people only learn about these essential spiritual qualities from traditions of worship. We learn compassion, love, peace and more by performing our daily work.

We are a caring people. Despite our frustration, we keep getting up and caring for people every day. Even though documentation, regulation, financial constraints, and a dozen other challenges impede our abilities to provide our patients with the kind of care that we wish to provide, we keep giving our best. We may not always feel like it, but we are optimists. We have to be in order to continue on in our mission of improving health and wellness for all people. We are the patient’s best chance at recovery from illness. Multiple studies validate that the healing presence of the nurse and having a healthy nurse: patient staffing ratio are keys to rapid recovery. We are the caregivers most likely to observe and report changes in patient’s health in order to avert emergencies. Nurses possess keen powers of perception. Nursing professionals promote healing even when curing is not an option. We facilitate communication among family members. Nurses hold hands with frightened elders whose spouses are dying. We provide simple touches and reassurance to patients who do not understand English. Nurses are among the most trusted groups of people whenever surveys are conducted evaluating the public’s views about people who they feel that it is safe to trust. We are good people. Nurses are flexible, quick thinking, and able to adapt to changing needs of patients and facilities. Yet we are stubborn. Nurses are like a dog with a bone, when it comes to doing what is right and advocating for those in our care. All nurses are educators. We help people learn how to care for themselves and their loved ones. We protect the public from illness by modeling and teaching about the prevention of illness. We are courageous. It takes guts to cope with the suffering that we face every single day. We are courageous when we face agitated and grief stricken families. We are courageous when we demand improved conditions for staff and patients in overcrowded facilities. To be a nurse is to be part of a great, tightly knit family. We give up our Christmas dinner in order to let the nurse with young children spend Christmas with her family. We work the night shift because the night nurse is ill because he hasn’t gotten any sleep for a couple of days. Nurses are smart and adaptable. We are creative people. We know how to keep a demented patient safe from falls. Nurses are constantly inventing new ways to keep difficult wound dressings in place. We come up with creative ways to encourage patients to practice healthy behaviors. Instead of painting a picture or composing a song, our canvas is the human spirit. We are multitasking extraordinaires. Nurses are adept at prioritizing, managing, and delegating. Nursing has become increasingly technical. We have learned how to utilize technology while still keeping our focus on each individual patient in our care. Nurses are leaders. Whether serving as a nurse in an extended care facility, overseeing nursing assistants, or working as part of a team in a large hospital, the demeanor of each nurse sets the tone for a the entire environment. Nurses are among the first to act when disasters strike. We are energetic and committed to our patients and each other. Nurses have common sense and believe in promoting the dignity of each and every patient. We are pretty nice people. I am proud to be a member of this terrific nursing family. I hope that you are too. 6 Tips To Achieve A Work-Life Balance

Page 31

by Sam Wheeler

Employees are faced with the challenge of trying to fulfill personal obligations on top of the demands of work. They rush to work early in the morning and come home in the evening tired and devoid of energy. They sometimes complete assignments and receive work-related calls during weekends. Family time is often sacrificed because work needs to be prioritized. These workers are in the quest of finding the perfect balance between family and career.

It

is important to note that there is no such thing as a perfect balance between career and personal life. These two are constantly changing and will continue to fight for your time and attention. Finding the right balance depends on your self-awareness, flexibility and understanding of what is important. Here are 6 mechanisms to help you achieve a good balance between your life and career:

1. PRIORITIZE TASKS

It may not be humanly possible to complete all the duties you had lined up in a single day. It is imperative to classify which ones matter to you the most. Concentrating on important tasks will help you to focus on what needs to be done first. It helps you weed out the unimportant tasks and saves you the unnecessary stress that comes with them. Prioritization of tasks can save you precious amount of time and energy. A to-do list will be a helpful tool in prioritizing. Write down all the things that you need to do for the day and check which ones are urgent. You will get a clearer view of how much you can accomplish when you rank your obligations according to significance.

Don’t let your job eat all your hours.

3. TAKE A VACATION

It won’t hurt to take a week off or two from work per year. You need to take a break from the monotony of work and be with family and friends. Pack your swimwear and spend some time at the beach. Harness your natural instincts and go camping at the woods. Go backpacking and explore sites you’ve only seen on travel magazines. Enjoying these activities will help unclutter your mind from workrelated stress. A good vacation will give you a fresher perspective on things and will make you more creative, productive and happy.

add to your stress levels. Hand it over to someone who knows the job and can do it better.

6. EXERCISE

You may have worked out your mental reserves by constantly being on the job but you should never forget to physically shape up. Exercise helps you clear your mind from stress. It also helps restore vigor and enables you to complete your daily activities with ease. There are so many ways to break a sweat. You can spend time at the gym, go on regular jogs around your neighborhood or simply enjoy casual walks at the park. These tips will help you achieve a good balance between your career and personal life. Most of these techniques will require trial and error. They will make you question your decisions and test your resolve. The benefits you will reap in the end, however, will make the entire process worth the effort. Article provided by ConstantContent.com

4. SET BOUNDARIES

Family time is sacred. Do not entertain work-related activities when you are taking a day off to rest and relax with your family. There should be a clear delineation between work and personal time. Turn off your phone or laptop when engaged in activities with your family or friends. The same rule should apply to workdays. Inform your family or friends to avoid calling or interrupting you at work except in cases of emergencies. Boundaries are needed so that colleagues and family members will 2. Hospital Jobs Make Gains

here is good news to report in the arena of hospital jobs: hiring showed slight gains during the month of September (2014). According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), employment at U.S. hospitals increased 0.13%, adding about 6,200 jobs across the country. Year-on-year, hospital employment is up by more than 23,000 positions since September 2013. HOSPITAL JOBS

The statistics are good news for an employment sector that has remained largely flat for the better part of several years. The increase in hospital jobs contributed to an overall healthcare sector increase of more than 22,000 but, as one would expect, there were both losers and winners in the September hiring numbers. For example: ambulatory care (+14,200 jobs) and healthcare services (+1,600 jobs) were the big winners; nursing care facilities (-1,000 jobs) and physician offices (-400 jobs) were the biggest losers. Overall, the healthcare sector does not appear to be doing as well as we originally expected when the Affordable Care Act was made law. From the time the legislation was first introduced we were constantly reminded that healthcare reform would add 30 million new patients and result in the creation of untold numbers of jobs. We were also told that hospital revenues would increase as a result of more people using them for primary care services. Those predictions have not yet materialized. However, it is important to remember that the employer mandate was delayed by one year. It is now slated to kick in on January 1, 2015; open enrollment should begin for employer-based programs very soon. How many consumers remain with employer-sponsored programs as opposed to being left to the exchanges remains to be seen.

CHANGING HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENTS

Despite the less-than-optimal numbers from the BLS, healthcare reform has already had a definite impact on how hospitals function. Larger hospitals now prefer to

employ hospitalist doctors even as they buy up and consolidate multiple group practices in their areas. They are looking to bring on more nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well, in order to reduce the cost of delivery. In the midst of all these changes is an attempt to focus on quality of care rather than volume. Hospital administrators know they will lose funding if they do not improve healthcare outcomes for Medicare patients under healthcare reform. This has given rise to a number of new hospital jobs being created specifically to handle quality control issues. The patient care navigator is but one example. As to the future of hospital jobs, we are left to speculate. There is still too much uncertainty with healthcare reform to predict how it will affect hospitals at the local level. However, it would appear as though large hospital groups are the best positioned to take advantage of the oppor-

tunities provided by reform. Independent hospitals and smaller groups will either have to find a way to compete or allow themselves to be acquired by their larger competitors.

RECRUITING ENVIRONMENT

Healthcare recruiters should also pay attention to September’s numbers as they plan their strategies for 2015. More hospital jobs mean more demand for their services across the board. The successful recruiter will figure out what types of jobs will be most in demand and begin looking to fill them right away, while unsuccessful recruiters will wait until the market comes to them If you are an individual looking for a hospital job, there is good reason to be encouraged. The healthcare sector continues its slow but steady expansion month after month. We trust there is a good job out there perfectly suited to your skills and training. It is just a matter of finding it. Article provided by hospitaldreamjobs.com/

ow do you put a love spell on someone you’ve never even met? Even harder, how do you make an employer, who has seen hundreds of resumes and interviewed a dozen candidates, fall in love with you before he sees you? Can you put a magic potion in his drink? Send him his favorite coffee and pastry combo every morning? Well, there’s a very slim chance that might work. But you don’t have to buy a month’s worth of coffee for the advice I am about to give you. You can make a potential employer fall in love with you– and it won’t cost you a penny. Here’s how:

“What’s the culture and mission of your company?” You need to gather this information before you send an application and definitely before the interview. Use this intel to best align your skills and work experience to the company’s expectations. You can even portray the best side of your attitude and make the recruiter see how your own goals align with the company’s mission.

The Employment Situation of Veterans in 2014

he unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001—a group referred to as Gulf War-era II veterans—declined by 1.8 percentage points over the year to 7.2 % in 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The jobless rate for all veterans, at 5.3 %, also declined from a year earlier. In addition, 29 % of Gulf War-era II veterans reported having a service-connected disability in August 2014, compared with 16 % of all veterans. This information was obtained from the Current Population Survey (CPS), a monthly sample survey of about 60,000 households that provides data on employment and unemployment in the United States. Data about veterans are collected monthly in the CPS; those monthly data are the source of the 2014 annual averages presented in this news release. In August 2014, a supplement to the CPS collected additional information about veterans on topics such as service-connected disability and veterans’ current or past Reserve or National Guard membership. Information from the supplement is also presented in this release. The supplement was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2014 DATA: • The unemployment rate for male veterans declined to 5.2 % in 2014. The rate for female veterans edged down to 6.0 %. • Among the 573,000 unemployed veterans in 2014, 59 % were age 45 and over. 37 % were age 25 to 44, and 4 % were age 18 to 24. • Veterans with a service-connected disability had an unemployment rate of 5.9 % in August 2014, the same rate as for veterans with no disability. • Nearly 1 in 3 employed veterans with a service-connected disability worked in the public sector in August 2014, compared with nearly 1 in 5 veterans with no disability. • In 2014, the unemployment rate of veterans varied by state, ranging from 1.4 % in North Dakota to 8.5 % in Maryland.

THE VETERAN POPULATION

In 2014, 21.2 million men and women, or 9 % of the civilian non-institutional population age 18 and over, were veterans. In the survey, veterans are defined as men and women who have previously served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and who were civilians at the time these data were collected. Veterans are more likely to be men and older than nonveterans. In part, this reflects the characteristics of veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam era. Veterans who served during these wartime periods accounted for 44 % (9.4 million) of the total veteran population in 2014. Thirty-one percent of veterans (6.5 million) served during Gulf War era I (August 1990 to August 2001) or Gulf War era II (September 2001 forward). Another quarter (5.3 million) served outside the designated wartime periods. 6339 Mill Street Rhinebeck, NY 12572 Fax Resumes to: 845-876-2020

all (96 %) of these veterans were men. In 2014, 28.4 % of male veterans of these wartime periods were in the labor force, and their unemployment rate was 5.0 %. Male veterans of these wartime periods had lower labor force participation rates than did male nonveterans in the same age categories.

VETERANS OF OTHER SERVICE PERIODS

In 2014, 5.3 million veterans had served on active duty during “other service periods, mainly between the Korean War and the Vietnam era, and between the Vietnam era and Gulf War era I. Because these veterans served between the major wartime periods, which span several decades, this group is concentrated in two age ranges. Thirty-five % of these veterans were age 45 to 54 in 2014, and another 40 % were age 65 and over. In 2014, nearly 9 in 10 veterans of other service periods were men. Among veterans of other service periods, the unemployment rate for men was 5.3 %, not statistically different from the rate of 4.2 % for women.

VETERANS WITH A SERVICE-CONNECTED DISABILITY

In August 2014, about 3.4 million veterans, or 16 % of the total, had a service-connected disability. (Some veterans did not report whether they had a service-connected disability.) Veterans with a service connected disability are assigned a disability rating by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or the U.S. Department of Defense. Ratings range from 0 to 100 %, in increments of 10 percentage points,

depending on the severity of the condition. Among veterans with a service-connected disability, one-third reported a disability rating of less than 30 %, while another third had a rating of 60 % or higher. In August 2014, veterans with a service-connected disability rating of less than 30 % were much more likely to be in the labor force than those with a rating of 60 % or higher (50.0 % and 32.6 %, respectively). Among veterans who served during Gulf War era II, nearly 3 in 10 (928,000) reported having a serviceconnected disability. Of these, 75.1 % were in the labor force in August 2014, lower than the 85.6 % for veterans from this period with no service-connected disability. Among Gulf War-era II veterans, the unemployment rate of those with a disability was 9.1 %, not statistically different from those with no disability (7.8 %). In August 2014, 17 % (584,000) of veterans who served during Gulf War era I reported a service-connected disability. Their labor force participation rate (73.6 %) was lower than the rate for veterans from the era who did not have a disability (87.2 %). The unemployment rate for Gulf War-era I veterans with a service-connected disability was lower than that for Gulf War-era I veterans without a service-connected disability. Among the 1.4 million veterans with a service-connected disability from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam era, 14.0 % were in the labor force in August 2014, lower than the 29.2 % of veterans from these periods who did not have a service-connected disability.

Page 37

The unemployment rate of veterans with a disability from these wartime periods was 6.0 %, little different from their counterparts with no disability (5.8 %). In August 2014, labor force participation rates and unemployment rates for veterans of other service periods were similar for those with and without a service-connected disability. Regardless of period of service, many veterans with a service-connected disability worked in the public sector. In August 2014, 31 % of employed veterans with a disability worked in federal, state, or local government, compared with 18 % of veterans with no disability and 13 % of nonveterans. Among the employed, 21 % of veterans with a disability worked for the federal government, compared with 6 % of veterans with no disability and 2 % of nonveterans.

RESERVE OR NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP

In August 2014, 28 % of Gulf War-era veterans (August 1990 to present) were reported to be current or past members of the Reserve or National Guard. Unemployment rates were not statistically different for veterans who were current or past members of the Reserve or National Guard compared with veterans who were never members. Among Gulf War-era II veterans, those who were current or past members of the Reserve or National Guard had a higher labor force participation rate than those who had never been members (86.5 % and 77.8 %, respectively). For veterans of Gulf War era I, labor force participation rates were similar for members and nonmembers. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Careers in Water Conservation W by James Hamilton

ater is society’s most valuable resource. Without it, we cannot sustain life. Water is also important to the wildlife, including fish, migrating waterfowl, and other animal species, that need water to survive. However, our supply of fresh water is limited. Fresh water makes up less than 3 percent of the water on the Earth’s surface, but most of this water is trapped in polar ice caps, glaciers, or located in very remote areas. This means humans have access to about 1 percent of the water on Earth.1 Water conservation pertains mostly to fresh water, because it is a limited resource. Although it is important to protect other types of water, fresh water is vital for civilization. Water conservation helps to ensure that available water supplies are used in the most efficient ways possible. Individuals and households can conserve water, as can businesses, and local, regional, and federal governments practice and encourage water conservation as well. Water conservation focuses on household, municipal, commercial, industrial, and agricultural water use. This report describes where water comes from in the first section, and explains what water conservation is in the second section, who has a role in conserving water in the third section, and how water is conserved in the fourth section. The fifth section profiles key occupations in water conservation. The information for each occupation includes a brief job description; the credentials needed to work in these occupations, such as education, training, certification, or licensure; and wage data.

WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM?

Fresh water comes from a variety of sources, and each of these sources provides only a limited amount of water. Water is collected from rivers, lakes, and streams or may come from an aquifer—an underground layer of water that is usually pumped to the surface through a well. After water is collected from the original source, it is transported through pipes or aqueducts to a reservoir, or it may flow directly into a water treatment plant where it is filtered and purified before use. After water is used, it is collected in sewers and is directed to a wastewater or sewage treatment plant, where it is again cleaned and purified before being released back into the environment or reclaimed for use in landscaping.

equal opportunity employment journal WHAT IS WATER CONSERVATION?

Conserving water has financial benefits. Most households and businesses must pay a water bill, and that bill will be lower if they use less water. Households can save hundreds of dollars a year by using water more efficiently and large companies save much more by conserving water.

May 2015 water available to meet society’s needs, now and for future generations. Another reason is energy conservation; it takes a lot of energy to pump water from the source to the final user. Water conservation can also preserve natural habitats. Minimizing water use prevents these habitats from being damaged, either from a lack of water or from the need to build new dams and reservoirs. Building dams and reservoirs is expensive and can have an impact on the environment significantly. Because they impede natural water flows, dams and reservoirs change the temperature and mineral content of the water and block wildlife access to land or water. Man-made reservoirs also flood previously dry land, making it unavailable for any productive uses. Conserving water also has financial benefits. Most households and businesses must pay a water bill, and that bill will be lower if they use less water. Households can save hundreds of dollars a year by using water more efficiently and large companies save much more by con serving water.

Water conservation focuses on limiting or decreasing total water use so that the rate at which water is used does not exceed the rate at which it is replenished. Conserva tion may also include finding new sources of water to meet current and growing demand. Factors affecting the demand for water include the size of the population and its growth, where people live, and household income.2 At least 36 states currently face water shortages.3 Increased population growth in dry areas of the United States, such as the southwest, has made water an increas ingly scarce resource in those areas. As a household’s income grows, the household has greater personal demands for water, such as to maintain gardens, lawns, and swimming pools. Global climate change may pose even greater threats to our water supply. Global warm ing can affect water supply by causing moisture to evaporate from the soil. Because of this, some areas may experience more frequent and severe droughts in the future. WHO HAS A ROLE IN There are many reasons to con- WATER CONSERVATION? serve water. May 2015 individuals and families conserving water by limiting the amount they use for daily activities. Businesses can also conserve water through techniques that vary based on the type of business. Agriculture is the largest user of water (crop irrigation accounts for 70 percent of the world’s fresh water use), and improved irrigation and farming techniques play a large role in water conservation. Local or municipal water conservation is typically carried out by local utilities or governments. In addition, state and federal regulations are in place to conserve water. The average person uses about 80 to 100 gallons of water per day.7 This includes water for drinking and for other uses, such as bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth, washing dishes, doing laundry, flushing toilets, and watering plants and lawns. Household water conservation begins with individuals and families limiting their daily water use. They can conserve water by paying attention to the amount of water they use or by implementing water-saving technologies, such as low-flush toilets. Water conservation at the commercial and industrial level uses many technologies that are similar to those at the household level. Technologies increasingly being adopted for commercial use include water-saving sensors in kitchen and bathroom sinks, waterless urinals, waterless car washes, and pressure washers. In these settings, the amount of water used depends on the type of business. For

equal opportunity employment journal example, restaurants typically use large amounts of water for preparing food and cleaning. Most offices use relatively little water for daily operations. In addition, the type of business determines which watersaving technologies are most appropriate and effective. For example, hotels conserve a lot of water by not laundering towels and linens each day for guests who stay multiple days. Many hotels give guests the option to reuse these items instead of having them laundered each day. Agriculture is the biggest user of water in the world, so finding ways to reduce the amount of water used for agriculture is important. Farmers and ranchers have a variety of methods for reducing agricultural water conservation. These include improved irrigation methods, choosing crops that require less water, and more efficient land use. For example, many farms have switched to overhead irrigation, which is more efficient than flood irrigation. State, local, and federal governments all have a role in conserving water. In states with dry climates, such as California, state government programs help ensure that water is used wisely. Regulations or incentives at various government levels support water conservation, such as those for building codes that specify rules and rebates and for tax breaks with the purchase of watersaving plumbing fixtures or appliances.10 In addition, local utilities and municipal governments may promote water conservation by imposing restrictions on how water

may be used, such as by prohibiting lawn watering or car washing during certain times of year or when the water supply is low. They may also use public outreach campaigns to encourage water conservation. Finally, some areas have tiered water rates—charging progressively higher prices as water use increases. At the federal level, several laws pertain to water use. The Clean Water Act is one of the most important environmental laws in the United States. The Act regulates the types of chemicals and pollution and the amount of wastewater that can be released into rivers, lakes, streams, and aquifers. It also sets standards for wastewater treatment.11 By limiting water pollution, the Clean Water Act helps ensure that our water supplies are free from contamination and are available for use.

There are many technologies and methods to conserve water. Some of them are appropriate for individual households or businesses; others are suitable for large-scale applications. There are also ways to use non freshwater sources, such as greywater and desalinated water, in place of fresh water. Among the most effective technologies for water conservation are water-efficient plumbing fixtures and appliances. Low-flow aerators limit the amount of water coming out of a faucet by blocking a portion of the mouth of the faucet. The water that flows out of the faucet is separated into several different streams instead of a single, solid one. Some models add pressurized air to the stream of water,

allowing the faucet to emit less water while maintaining high water pressure.12 Modern appliances—including dishwashers, water heaters, and washing machines—are designed with water conservation in mind. These appliances use significantly less water than older models. Moreover, replacing older appliances with newer, waterefficient ones greatly cuts down on cost and water use. Water-efficient toilets are another effective way to reduce water consumption. Dual-flush toilets have two different settings: one for solid waste, the other for liquid waste. Older toilets use about 5 gallons of water for each flush, but new ones may use only 1.6 gallons per flush for solid waste and less than 1 gallon for liquid waste.13 Waterless urinals also save water. Water that is not suitable for drinking may be used for other purposes, such as watering plants or flushing toilets. Known as greywater, this water is recycled from showers, bathroom sinks, washing machines, and drinking fountains. Rainwater can be collected as runoff and used for the same purposes as grey water. Plumbers must install additional pipes and storage tanks to keep grey water and rainwater separate from drinking water. Wastewater—water that has already been used and collected through sewer systems—may be used for nondrinking purposes after being treated. This water, known as reclaimed water, is processed at a wastewater treatment plant to remove contaminants. Often, reclaimed water is cleaner than drinking water, but it is almost always limited to use in landscaping. Many cities use reclaimed water to maintain parks, golf courses, and other outdoor facilities. Households and businesses can look to green landscaping practices to cut down on their water use. Landscaping is water intensive, but a technique known as xeriscaping uses significantly less water than the amount required for traditional landscaping. Xeriscaping uses native plants that do not require as much water and minimizes the number of plants in a landscape. For example, a common practice in xeriscaping is replacing grass either with plants that do not need much water or with rock gardens. Xeriscaping may also use water-efficient sprinkler systems that operate at times other than peak sunlight hours to reduce evaporation. Traditionally, farmland has been watered using flood irrigation, in which the entire field is immersed in water. This is often wasteful because some parts of a field may receive excess water, while other parts of the field receive sufficient water. Overhead irrigation—water that is sprayed onto plants from sprinklers—is a more direct way to deliver water to crops. Another method is drip irrigation, in which water is slowly piped into the soil around crops to minimize runoff and evaporation, but it is expensive and not suitable for large-scale farming. Often, upgrading existing irrigation systems can conserve large amounts of water. This can be done by creating dikes to prevent runoff and using soil moisture and rainfall sensors deliver water only when and where it is needed. Another way of increasing the available water supply is to use desalination, the process of making fresh water out of salt water. Desalination would allow areas near the ocean to use the expansive supply of ocean water to meet their needs. However, desalination is energyintensive and expensive, so it is currently not practical for widespread use.

WATER CONSERVATION OCCUPATIONS

Many different types of workers are involved in water conservation. Scientists may find new sources of water or find ways to use water more efficiently. Engineers design and develop new products and procedures for saving water. Planning and outreach workers ensure that communities and landscaped areas use

May 2015 water efficiently, and they educate people about water conservation. Construction and water operations workers implement water-saving devices and procedures. Agriculture and grounds maintenance workers help reduce the use of water for farming and landscaping. Those who work in water conservation are employed within various industries, including federal, state, and local governments; utilities; construction; and agriculture, among others. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not have a count of those who work solely in water conservation.

SCIENCE OCCUPATIONS

Scientists who work in water conservation devise technical solutions for reducing water use and develop ways to tap into new sources of fresh water. They plan strategies to conserve water resources and ensure that water is used as efficiently as possible. Scientists are also involved in reducing water use and ensuring that our water is safe. They measure levels of pollution and chemical contamination. Some scientists are involved in preserving water ecosystems and habitats. Scientists generally work as part of a team that includes other types of scientists, engineers, and science technicians. Science technicians work under the supervision of scientists and assist them in their duties. Scientists often work in an office or laboratory, and many spend time working outdoors. They may be employed by government agencies, universities, or private companies. Some scientists are hired as advisors for special projects. Microbiologists work in laboratories studying water samples to ensure that the samples are free of harmful parasites, and that any microorganisms found in the water are not harmful to humans or the natural en vironment. Microbiologists study these microorganisms and their effects on the environment and human health. They may devise ways to remove harmful microorgan isms from our drinking water, or use them clean up pollution. For example, oil spills are often treated with special microorganisms that break down the chemicals in the oil. Microorganisms such as bacteria and other parasites can pose health problems in humans. If water is not treated properly, large numbers of people can become infected. The water coming out of municipal water systems’ treatment plants must be free of harmful microorganisms. Treated wastewater must also be safe to release back

equal opportunity employment journal into the natural environment. Water conservationists are conservation scientists who give technical help to people concerned with the con servation of water. They help private landowners and governments by advising on water quality, preserving water supplies, preventing groundwater contamination, and conserving water. Chemists analyze the chemicals found in water to make sure it is safe for use. Water may contain pollutants, such as fertilizers from farm runoff or industrial chemicals that have been released into the environment. In addition, water typically contains many dissolved minerals from natural sources. They also handle water purification, using chemicals to kill harmful microorganisms and processes to remove harmful chemicals. Environmental scientists and specialists protect natural water sources from pollutants and other contamination by studying the sources and effects of this pollution and determining ways to clean it up and prevent further pollution. They may also work to reclaim contaminated water by devising ways to clean the water and determining suitable uses for the water after it is cleaned. Environmental scientists ensure regulations are followed so that the water is healthy to use and any damage to the environment from water use is minimal. Hydrologists study water and the water cycle and analyze how they influence the surrounding environ ment. They study the movement, distribution, and other properties of water and may measure bodies of water, such as volume and stream flow. They may also research how to improve water conservation and preservation. Some hydrologists use computer models to forecast future water supplies, the spread of pollution, and to find new sources of fresh water. Hydrologists are also vital in evaluating the feasibility of water-related projects, such as hydroelectric power plants, irrigation systems, and waste treatment facilities.

CREDENTIALS

Most scientists need at least a bachelor’s degree from a program that includes both coursework and laboratory hours. A scientist who is leading a research team or conducting independent research typically needs a master’s or doctoral degree. Hydrologists typically need a master’s degree. It is common for scientists to pursue a specialized degree in a subfield, such as bacteriology or toxicology. Analytical skills are important for

Engineers’ role in water conservation is to apply strategies that reduce the use of water. They may develop new technologies that decrease the amount of water used for certain activities. They may also design water delivery and storage systems and water treatment facilities. Engineers work alongside scientists, engineering technicians, and others to apply technical solutions to water conservation. Engineering technicians work under the supervision of engineers and assist them in their duties. Engineers may design and test various types of machinery and waterefficient appliances. They ensure quality control and oversee compliance with standard operating procedures and federal, state, and local regulations. Engineering technicians work under the supervision of engineers to complete many engineering tasks. Agricultural engineers find technological solutions to reduce water use on farms. They may design agricultural machinery and equipment or irrigation systems that use water more efficiently, and help determine how to deliver the most water for a given type of crop. Agricultural engineers may also be involved in pollution management, preventing runoff from fields that could pollute local water sources. Civil engineers design and supervise large construction projects. They may be responsible for the design or upkeep of a city-wide water distribution system or sewer system. Industrial engineers are involved in improving industrial practices and increasing efficiency. They devise ways to use less water more efficiently. They may design systems that contain or cleanse water that has become contami nated through industrial processes. Mining and geological engineers use their knowledge to evaluate sources of water, particularly underground sources. Groundwater is typically in aquifers, which may be made up of porous rock, sand, or gravel. Engineers may help identify the boundaries of an aquifer and determine which sites are best for drilling wells to bring water to the surface.

CREDENTIALS

Engineers usually need at least a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field. Engineers in water conservation may specialize, as described above, and usually work solely in that specialty. Licensure as a professional engineer (PE) is recommended and often required, depending on an engineer’s specialty. Entry-level engineers work under the direction of senior or supervisory engineers and may assist senior engineers on sustainability projects.

PLANNING AND OUTREACH OCCUPATIONS

Water conservation requires planning and outreach. When new communities or large infrastructure projects are planned, water use must be taken into account. Water conservation is a concern especially in drier areas that are being developed. Water utilities and government water agencies may employ planning and outreach workers to educate the public about water conservation

and to develop and implement conservation strategies. These workers typically are in offices. Urban and regional planners and operations re search analysts are active in these large-scale strategies for water use. Landscape architects design grounds that minimize water use but remain aesthetically pleasing. In addition, outreach is important to inform the public about water conservation. Public relations specialists educate the community about water conservation, and work to increase its support. Urban and regional planners develop strategies for land use. They create plans for new communities, to accommodate growth, or to revitalize areas. Water supply and use are two of the biggest factors to take into account when planning new communities. Planners must ensure that there is enough water available to support develop ment. Urban and regional planners have a broad view with respect to community development, and their preparation is essential to ensure efficient use of water. Operations research analysts use sophisticated computer software, such as databases and statistical and modeling packages, to solve problems. They decide how to allo cate water when communities or new structures are being planned, and help utilities and other organizations figure out the most effective way to distribute water. They evaluate costs and benefits of water projects and work with scientists, engineers, and others to develop solutions to water distribution, sanitation, and conservation problems. Landscape architects plan and design land areas for parks, recreational facilities, highways, and other properties. They confer with their clients to understand a project and prepare site plans, specifications, and cost estimates. They may practice xeriscaping to choose the type and quantity of plants for a landscaped area. Part of their job is to determine how much water their landscapes require and to plan ways to ensure that the land is properly watered and drained. They may plan automatic sprinkler layouts that

Public relations specialists educate people about water conservation. Because water conservation requires the participation and cooperation of the general public, public relations specialists inform people about what they can do—and what utilities and local governments are doing— to conserve water. Public relations specialists may work for utilities or government agencies and develop strate gies to publicize water conservation initiatives. They may write materials for media releases, plan and direct public relations programs, and answer media inquiries.

Workers in the above water conservation planning and outreach occupations typically need a bachelor’s or master’s degree to enter the occupation. Most urban and regional planners have a master’s degree from an accredited urban or regional planning program. These programs accept students with a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, including economics, geography, political science, or environmental design. Operations research analysts need a master’s degree for most research positions, but a bachelor’s degree may be enough for most entry-level positions. Many analysts have a degree in a related field, such as mathematics,

Many em ployers recommend that prospective landscape archi tects complete an internship with a landscape architecture firm during their formal education. Public relations specialists typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field. They are then trained on the job for 1 month to 1 year.

CONSTRUCTION OCCUPATIONS

Construction workers—including construction managers, construction laborers, construction equipment operators, pipelayers, plumbers, and septic tank servicers and sewer pipe cleaners—build and install the infrastructure for conserving water. They build new water delivery and storage systems. They also build new dams and reservoirs, dig wells, lay new pipes, and install water-efficient appliances and irrigation systems. Construction workers typically are employed by construction companies and spend much of their time outdoors. Their work can be physically demanding. Construction managers oversee building projects. These may include constructing reservoirs and water treatment plants or installing new pipes and water delivery systems. Construction managers are

employed by construction companies or utilities. On large assignments, a project manager typically oversees several construction managers who supervise individual aspects of the assign ment. The construction manager’s time is split between working at the construction site and an office that may be either onsite or offsite. Construction laborers do many of the basic physical tasks onsite. They may clean and prepare construction sites, load or unload building materials, dig trenches, backfill holes, or compact earth to prepare for construction. They do a variety of tasks, from easy to difficult and even hazardous, on almost all construction sites. Equipment operators use heavy machinery to move construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials at a construction site. They may dig trenches for pipes or clear a large area for a planned reservoir. Equipment operators also control cranes to lift and place heavy objects, such as collectors and storage tanks for rainwater or greywater. They set up, inspect, and adjust equipment and do some maintenance and minor repair. Pipelayers place pipes outdoors. They install large-diameter pipes, such as water mains, or smaller pipes that carry water from the main to houses or buildings. Pipelayers may also install sewage systems that carry waste to treatment plants. The pipes must also be protected and reinforced before the ground covers them. Plumbers follow detailed construction drawings to install pipes and appliances in buildings. They may remove older fixtures and replace them with water-efficient ones, such as

dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets. Plumbers may also replace leaky pipes or install plumbing systems that accommodate both drinkable and non-drinkable water and thereby allow a building to use rainwater and greywater. To conserve resources, plumbers lay out their materials and fit the pipes into the building’s structure. They measure and mark areas in which pipes will be installed and connected while checking for obstructions, such as electrical wiring. To assemble a system, plumbers use saws, pipe cutters, and pipe-bending machines to fit, shape, and link lengths of pipe. When the system is ready, plumbers install appliances that use water and connect them to the water supply. Septic tank servicers and sewer pipe cleaners ensure that septic tanks—tanks that store human waste when sewers are not available—and sewer pipes are clean and that waste material is able to flow through them properly. If septic tanks or sewers become blocked, the waste mate rial backs up and may flow up through drains or seep into the ground nearby, which can contaminate the water supply.

CREDENTIALS

Construction managers typically need a degree in construction management, business management, or engineering and have experience working in construction. Experience is important for construction managers, so it may substitute for some educational requirements. Workers who have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in construction management or engineering but do not have significant construction experience may be hired as assistants to construction managers.

Page 47

Construction laborers are not required to have a formal education. Pipelayers typically need a high school diploma and are trained on the job in 1 month or less. Plumbers also typically have a high school diploma and receive training through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts 4 to 5 years and involves about 1,700 to 2,000 hours of paid onthe-job training and at least 246 hours of related technical instruction. Septic tank servicers and sewer pipe cleaners need less than a high school diploma. They are normally trained on the job and are competent in performing their jobs with 1 to 12 months of training.

CONCLUSION

Fresh water is one of Earth’s most important resources. Without it, life would be impossible. Because our available fresh water sources are limited, water conserva tion is an important aspect of our green economy. Water conservation workers ensure that our fresh water supplies remain adequate for human consumption and wildlife use. Careers in water conservation include those in science, engineering, planning and outreach, construction, agriculture and grounds maintenance, and water operations. The educational requirements for these careers span from no formal requirements to postsecondary education. Most of the occupations in water conservation had annual median wages that were near or above the national median annual wage of $34,750 in May 2012. urrently 11.89 percent of the total federal civilian workforce, over 219,000 people with disabilities, are employed by the federal government. Jobs for the disabled exist in most organizations and in hundreds of occupations. Total disabled employment has increased dramatically from 7% in 2010 to just under 12% of the total federal workforce in 2013. In 2013 16% of all new hires were disabled. The President signed Executive Order 13548 requiring agencies to increase federal employment of individuals with disabilities in 2010, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the American Disabilities Act (ADA). These orders and the ADA have increased awareness among managers within the federal sector of their disabled hiring options. The federal government is working aggressively to expand total disabled employment opportunities within government. All agencies are required to establish Selective Placement Program Coordinators and to develop outreach efforts to identify qualified candidates to meet agency workforce diversity goals. This section explains the various hiring options for disabled people. HIRING OPTIONS

Agencies work with State vocational rehabilitation agencies (SVRAs), the VA, colleges and universities and other organizations to identify and locate qualified people with disabilities. Many Federal employers also participate in job fairs and visit college campuses for recruitment events and to identify qualified people with disabilities. Recruitment is often achieved through

the competitive hiring process or, if certain qualifications are met, through excepted service appointments. These opportunities also provide federal jobs for disabled veterans. Federal employers may use a variety of hiring options to bring people with disabilities into their workforce. Descriptions of key options are listed below.

COMPETITIVE APPOINTMENTS

Most Federal employees are hired through the competitive process. Applicants apply directly to the hiring departments and agencies for most positions. Numerous assessment tools are available for federal employers to evaluate applicants and conduct hiring. If required and requested, written test accommodations are available. Once process is completed, and agency may select from a list of qualified applicants. Use this site to research job options and to locate information on many agencies including direct links to agency recruitment web sites and telephone contact information. Search for jobs stateside and overseas and learn how to complete and submit professional job applications and forms. OPM provides user friendly, accessible information online or by telephone and available 24 hours-a-day, seven days-aweek. The official web site for federal jobs and employment information may be accessed at USAJobs. An interactive voice response telephone system can be reached at (912) 757-3000 or TDD (912) 744-2299.

services isn’t permanent. Temporary appointments, typically hot to exceed one year, are made with a one 1-year extension possible. The assigned work must not be permanent. However, term appointments are often made for more than one year but can’t exceed four years. Term appointments are used for certain projects, excessive workload, scheduled abolishment, agency reorganizations, contracting out initiatives of certain functions, funding uncertainty, or the need to maintain permanent positions that are required for placing federal employees who may be displaced from other agency units and organizations.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS

Review the Student Educational Employment Programs page on this service for student employment options.

APPOINTMENT UNDER SPECIAL AUTHORITIES

The Federal Government may hire people with disabilities using the excepted service special appointing authorities. Federal agencies use these authorities when considering hiring certain people with severe cognitive, physical or psychiatric disabilities or who have a history of such disabilities. The authorities offer agencies an opportunity to demonstrate the potential to successfully perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation in the workplace. Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102(t) for the TIME-LIMITED APPOINTMENTS hiring of People with Mental Retardation. meet the eligibility requirements. Upon completion of 2 years of satisfactory performance the employee may qualify for conversion to the competitive service. Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102(u) for the hiring of People With Severe Physical Disabilities. Agencies can appoint persons with severe physical disabilities who: (1) under a temporary appointment can demonstrate their ability to complete duties satisfactorily; or (2) have been certified by a State vocational rehabilitation agency (SVRA) counselor or the Department of Veterans Affair’s Vocational Rehabilitation Office as likely to succeed in the performance of specified duties. After successfully completing two years of satisfactory service under this schedule, the employee may qualify to be converted to the competitive service. Schedule B, 5 CFR 213.3202(k) for the Hiring of People Who Have Recovered from Mental Illness. This schedule permits appointments at up to the Grades GS-15 level when filled by individuals who: (1) are placed at a severe disadvantage in obtaining employment because of a psychiatric disability evidenced by outpatient treatment or hospitalization and have had a significant period of substantially disrupted employment because of the disability; and (2) a State vocational rehabilitation counselor or a Department of Veterans Affairs counseling psychologist (or psychiatrist) who has determined that they meet the severe disadvantage criteria and are certified for a specific position, that they are capable and able to function in the appointed position identified, and

that any residual disability is not job related. Employment under this section may not exceed two years following each significant period of mental illness. In addition, federal employers can use the following hiring authorities to provide assistance to employees with disabilities: Schedule A, 5 CFR 213.3102(ll) for Hiring Readers Interpreters, and Other Personal Assistants. This authority permits appointments of readers, interpreters, and personal assistants for employees with severe disabilities when filled on a full-time, part-time, or intermittent basis. Upon completion of at least one year of satisfactory service under this authority, the employee may qualify for conversion to the competitive service.

CERTIFICATION

Individual with a physical disability are considered by OPM to have met the qualification standards for either a excepted service or temporary competitive service Schedule A appointment when an certification is received from the Department of Veterans Affairs State or a State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (SVRA). Certifications are prepared by a counselor based on a job-site inspection, job task analysis, and evaluation of the proposed appointee’s abilities and disabilities. The certification must state that in the counselor’s judgment the proposed appointee is able to perform the duties of the position and is physically qualified to safely do the work. The certification must be supported by a medical report and a narrative statement documenting the counselor’s conclu-

sions. Factors to be discussed include training, education, work history, modification of job or worksite if needed, and limitations of the proposed appointee. The certification required for an excepted service Schedule A appointment of an individual who is mentally retarded need only state that the individual has the ability to perform the duties of the position; is physically able to do the job safely; and can maintain himself or herself in the work environment. No medical report is required.

DISABLED VETERANS ENROLLED IN VA TRAINING PROGRAMS

Disabled veterans eligible for training under the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) vocational rehabilitation program may enroll for training or work experience at an agency under the terms of an agreement between the agency and VA. The veteran is not a federal employee for most purposes while enrolled in the program, but is a beneficiary of the VA. The training is tailored to individual needs and goals, so there is no set length. If the training is intended to prepare the individual for eventual appointment in the agency (rather than just work experience), OPM must approve the training plan. Upon successful completion, the veteran will be given a Certificate of Training showing the occupational series and grade level of the position for which trained. This allows any agency to appoint the veteran noncompetitively for a period of one year. Upon appointment, the veteran is given a Special Tenure Appointment which is then converted to careerconditional with OPM approval. Article provided by www.federaljobs.net
