an you imagine how boring life would be if you knew how everything would turn out before you experienced it? Think back to a fun night you had with friends. Did it unfold exactly how you thought it would? Probably not. The future never unfolds exactly the way we expect it. Change makes our day-to-day operations more interesting, fun and strangely magical. Resisting change will slow down your progress in your pursuit of happiness. Sometimes an unexpected turn of events will leave you smiling. When that happens, be appreciative and observant and appreciate what has been presented. It is how you react when things don’t go your way that shapes your outlook on life and builds the strength within yourself to conquer the journey to success and happiness. Things turn out in your favor...probably more often than you are aware of, but when they don’t, it’s best just to roll with it. Your life will probably not turn out as perfectly as you imagined. This doesn’t mean you can’t live a life full of joy and satisfaction. You just need to stay open-minded and be easygoing when things change. How you approach the path to your most important goals is dictated by your interpretation of the constant curve balls the world throws you. If you react with a positive attitude, odds are you’ll be in for a positive outcome. Turning your focus to living in the here and now. More often than not, we find ourselves looking too far ahead into our future. While it is good to have an idea of how we want our future shaped, we shouldn’t over analyze every detail that might affect this plan. We have to accept the fact that changes will be made and it’s best to react with optimism. Until then, try focusing on the present and make the most of it.

5 Nursing Career Options for The BNS Mandate

As

part of a nationwide movement to improve patient care, the nonprofit Institute of Medicine recommended that 80% of the nursing workforce have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree by 2020. Within two years of the initiative’s unveiling in 2010, the percentage of nurses with a BSN or higher had risen slightly to 50%. However, enrollment in RN to BSN programs jumped by more than 22% during the same period, the Institute of Medicine reported. Recent years also have seen a growing number of healthcare providers take steps to raise the educational level of their nursing staff, including some hospitals that now mandate that RNs have a BSN or obtain one within a set timeframe. A 2013 survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) found that more than 40% of healthcare employers require new nurses to have at least a BSN. The AACN considers a BSN to be the “minimum educational requirement for professional nursing practice.” The Institute of Medicine cited several factors in calling for nurses to have higher levels of education, including the evolving healthcare system, an aging population and the rising number of patients with chronic conditions. The organization also noted the need for additional nurses to assume leadership roles. Attaining a BSN can position registered nurses for professional advancement in a number of clinical and managerial roles. As the AACN notes, “The nurse with a baccalaureate degree is prepared to practice in all healthcare settings—critical care, outpatient care, public health, and mental health.”

Among the career paths available to RNs with a BSN:

Nurse Educator: Responsible for training the next generation of nurses, these professionals may design, teach, evaluate and revise academic curriculum for RN to BSN and other degree programs. Nurse educators may also write grant proposals, conduct research and help maintain clinical standards in nursing. At the postsecondary level, nursing instructors nationwide earned an average annual salary of $68,640 in 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Nurse Manager: These professionals typically are responsible for recruiting, retaining and supervising nurses. They also may assist patients and families, collaborate with physicians, manage finances and oversee medical records. Nurse managers often juggle multiple roles in working with healthcare organizations, physician groups and nursing staff. The BLS forecasts strong job growth (23%) through 2022 for the category of workers that includes nurse managers. Case Management Nurse: Often working with specific categories of patients, whether based on demographic factors or types of medical condition, case management nurses oversee treatment and care plans for long-term effectiveness. Duties can include scheduling and coordinating preventative care visits and surgeries, researching treatments and procedures, and working with insurance companies. Clinical Research Nurse: A relatively new category of nursing professional, clinical research nurses specialize in the care of patients participating in research, often at research centers or academic medical facilities. According to the National Institutes of Health, these professionals help recruit and enroll research study participants, ensure the integrity of research data and comply with reporting regulations, as well as provide clinical care. Geriatric Nurse: The aging of the baby boom generation is fueling the need for additional healthcare providers and services, including geriatric nurses who provide specialized care for elderly patients. These professionals work in traditional hospital settings, as well as in hospices, home healthcare facilities and nursing homes. They provide preventative care, administer medication and conduct screenings for patients who have age-related conditions such as dementia, osteoporosis, arthritis and chronic pain. How to use SEO Techniques To Create The Perfect Resume and LinkedIn Profile by Paul Maplesden

Y

ou may have heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - the practice of tweaking various onsite and offsite features of your website to appear in search results - but did you know that you can apply SEO techniques to your resume and LinkedIn profile as well? There are several SEO principles that you can follow to enhance how your resume and profile appear, helping employers to easily find your details and enhancing your chances of getting an interview. You can apply these techniques to both your resume and your LinkedIn profile. In this article, we’ll show you how to: • Use effective keywords in your resume and profile • Keep the content of your resume sharp, focused and accurate • Use titles in a powerful way • Link to your resume and use social media

Use effective keywords in your resume and profile

Keywords are used in SEO to tell a search engine about the content of your website and why it’s relevant. You can use keywords in your resume or profile in a very similar way.

Keywords are used in SEO to tell a search engine about the content of your website and why it’s relevant. You can use keywords in your resume or profile in a very similar way, as follows:

Focus on precise verbs, nouns and descriptions relevant to your work experience

Use precise nouns and verbs as keywords throughout your resume. This could include areas like your title in the jobs you did, accurate descriptions of your responsibilities and more. An example could be: ‘Project Manager for New Site Construction - Responsible for creating and managing project plans, financial control of all budgets, resource management of multiple teams.’

Avoid too many adjectives and buzzwords

An Equal Opportunity Employer

We pledge equal access to a teaching environment that supports diversity and equality regardless of race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin or disability.

Search engines seldom pay attention to words that don’t add value to the content of a webpage, just as recruiters don’t pay attention to buzzwords, hyperbole and unnecessary content. This means you should avoid using too many adjectives like ‘energetic’, ‘passionate’, ‘focused’ and the like.

Think of different words to say the same thing

If you’ve had a number of different positions in the same field, some of your responsibilities from job to job may have been similar. If this is the case, try to find different words to describe your responsibilities and titles each time you include them.

Put important keywords at the start of paragraphs and sentences to add emphasis

You want employers to pay attention to the most important parts of your resume or profile, so put your important keywords close to the start of each section, paragraph or sentence where possible.

Keep the content of your resume sharp, focused and accurate

Search engines are becoming better at understanding where websites can really add value; you should think of your resume or profile in a similar way.

Short and concise is better

Try to make every word in your resume or profile count. This means avoiding any temptation to pad out your resume, being very sharp with your descriptions and making it as easy as possible for a recruiter to scan and understand your resume quickly.

Use lists where it makes sense

People love things to be broken down into easily understandable, bitesized chunks. An excellent way to do this is by using bullet points and lists. Use these in your resume and profile where it makes sense to highlight key points.

Keep all information relevant, simple and factual

Employers will not spend long looking at individual resumes, and you only have a few seconds to grab their attention. This means that you should make your resume clear and simple, avoid using long words unnecessarily and ensure it contains only the most relevant, factual information.

You should review and double-check your resume and profile for accurate English use. This means proofreading them for spelling, punctuation, grammar and more to make sure that they read well and are error-free.

Make sure that your English use is correct and accurate

You should review and double-check your resume and profile for accurate English use. This means proofreading them for spelling, punctuation, grammar and more to make sure that they read well and are error-free.

Use titles in a powerful way

Search engines use the headings and titles in a webpage to better understand what the page is about. You should use titles and headings throughout your resume in a similar way.

Put your headings in bold

You want your headings to stand out, so put them in bold or make them a slightly larger font.

Use headings and subheadings

It’s fine to use different levels of headings in your resume. For example, you may have a main heading of ‘Employment History’ and then a subheading for each of your specific positions or employers.

State what is under each heading and use keywords

You want your heading to concisely explain what the reader will find underneath it, so make sure that it succinctly describes that. You should also make sure that you use relevant keywords in your heading. When you use headings for your job titles, be sure to include the relevant title of your job.

Link to your resume and use social media

Social media and links are powerful signals that let search engines know what content is popular. You can apply a similar kind of thinking to your resume or LinkedIn profile.

Linking to your resume or profile

If you can link to your resume or profile in a responsible and reasonable way, you should do so. You might link from a resume sharing site, from various social media accounts or from other websites that accept resume or profile submissions.

Using your LinkedIn networks

LinkedIn is designed for people to connect based around shared employment interests, professional skills, groups and more. Spend some time learning how LinkedIn fits together and use your networks there to get visibility to your profile and resume.

Sharing on other social media networks

If you belong to other groups, communities or social media networks in your profession or related fields, you can also think about promoting your resume or profile where it’s relevant.

IN CLOSING

As you can see, it’s easy to use SEO techniques to improve how you create, present and share your resume and LinkedIn profile. These simple steps can help you significantly improve the visibility of your professional skills, experience, employment and history, enhancing your chances of getting an interview and landing the dream job. y fostering a culture of diversity, or a capacity to appreciate and value individual differences, in all aspects of their operations, employers benefit from varied perspectives on how to confront business challenges and achieve success. Although the term is most often used to refer to differences among individuals such as ethnicity, gender, age and religion, diversity actually encompasses the infinite range of individuals’ unique attributes and experiences. As the nation’s largest minority — comprising almost 50 million individuals — people with disabilities contribute to diversity, and businesses can enhance their competitive edge by taking steps to ensure they are integrated into their workforce and customer base.

In the Workforce

Perhaps more than any other group of people, individuals with disabilities have the ability to adapt to different situations and circumstances. As employees, they add to the range of viewpoints businesses need to succeed, offering fresh ideas on how to solve problems, accomplish tasks and implement strategies. Hiring people with disabilities can positively impact a business’s bottom line. Recruiting and retaining workers with disabilities is one strategy to counter the effects of the aging and shrinking workforce. This untapped labor pool can offer a source of skilled employees and can contribute to increasing retention and reducing turnover. In addition, tax incentives and technical assistance can assist with accommodations, which are often relatively easy and inexpensive to implement. To gain these benefits and others, employers should take steps to attract and retain employees with disabilities, such as: • Seeking out qualified candidates with disabilities for job openings • Establishing a system for educating all workers about the value people with disabilities bring to an organization • Incorporating a disability focus into any diversity training program • Ensuring that internal professional development programs are available to people with disabilities • Providing employees with disabilities with candid and prompt feedback on their performance in the same manner as provided for individuals without disabilities • Making certain that training and other off-site activities are accessible to employees with disabilities • Taking advantage of tax credits and education resources to provide accommodations for both new employees with disabilities and employees returning to work following an illness or injury

including their extended families and support networks, who are also a significant market segment. When deciding how to spend this money, individuals with disabilities have the same standards as all customers — they want quality products and services at competitive prices. To tap this market, businesses should take steps to ensure their marketing efforts convey that people with disabilities are valued as customers. Such steps may include: • Incorporating people with disabilities into the business’s marketing strategy • Testing proposed marketing tactics among people with disabilities • Implementing promotional tactics specifically targeted to people with disabilities • Ensuring that communication channels for advertising and promotion reach people with disabilities • Incorporating people with disabilities in advertising and other promotional activities • Recognizing that the disability market is a diverse one in and of itself and that one size does not fit all • Defining how and why the disability market needs the business’s products & services • Including people with disabilities in product development, keeping in mind that products created to the meet the needs of people with disabilities often turn out to have widespread applicability • Devising simple modifications to make existing products and services accessible to people with disabilities

Resources to Assist

Building partnerships is critical to incorporating individuals with disabilities into diversity goals, and a number of resources are available to help employers in their efforts, including: U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) 1-866-ODEP-DOL (1-866-633-7365) (V) or TTY. It also educates about self-employment options for individuals with disabilities. State Governors’ Committees on Employment of People with Disabilities State committees on employment of people with disabilities can provide guidance to employers on how to recruit and retain qualified individuals with disabilities. Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) State VR agencies can help employers identify qualified, job-ready candidates with disabilities to fill their workforce needs. 3 Job Hunting Tips for Millennials M by Lyndsay Wilson

aybe you’re a Millennial who has a headache from rolling your eyes at articles lamenting your lack of work ethic. Maybe your baby boomer parents have told you one too many times that they just don’t build kids like they used to. For those under thirty, the times are a-changing. The fact is that finding fulfilling work in today’s economy is harder than it was a few generations ago. If you spend any time at all on the Internet (and if you were born between 1981 to 2000, this is basically a given) then you’re probably aware of the bad reputation your generation has earned. Entitled but lazy, broke but materialistic, overeducated and sporting a massive chip on their shoulders, Millennials are painted as spoiled problem children. Generation Y counters this with the argument that they are actually more adaptable, more tech savvy and more independent than any generation before them. And they are most certainly not lazy. Having come of age in a turbulent social and economic environment, each day they navigate dilemmas their grandparents simply never had to contend with. Life as a young adult in a world that is more connected than ever means a generation which has a special, unprecedented relationship with technology and information. Playing up these strengths is the key to successful job hunting as a Millennial.

Clean Up Your Social Media Game

Nobody needs to tell you how important your online image is. With the majority of prospective employers scouting you out on Facebook or Twitter, you can be sure that how you portray yourself online is a big deal. Make friends with privacy settings and comb through photos and comments to find anything that makes you look less than employable. Draw clear lines between personal and public - a strange or slightly X-rated Pinterest board or Tumblr can make more difference than you realize. Try to think of social media as an avenue for self promotion. If you have a skill you want employers to know about, display it on your blog and show readers what you can do. This is especially true for jobs that rely heavily on design, programming or marketing - nobody will take your title as “SEO expert” seriously if it takes them 20 minutes to find your personal blog.

Dust Off Those Bootstraps

The unfortunate truth is that Millennials are often fighting against ugly stereotypes. Prove that you are an engaged, active and switched-on type and you’ll be taken seriously. This means taking your natural think-out-the-box perspective and applying it to your job search. Don’t simply build a CV - actively work to beef up your competence as a professional in general. In today’s economic climate, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit are always in demand. Instead of passively waiting for others to give you direction, work on making yourself more marketable. Do online courses to boost your skills, volunteer, learn how to network and consider interning. By engaging with your field on multiple platforms, you increase the chance of meeting influential people, and, more importantly, being seen by those who want your expertise.

Have a Humble Attitude

This can be the single biggest stumbling block and a point of contention between older employers and younger hires. As a Millennial, you may be more comfortable with a loose work hierarchy or none at all. You may be dismissive of certain social rituals and come into the workplace with an air of superiority that others may not believe is warranted. Millennials are often quick learners, however, and have a familiarity with technology that makes older folk slightly uneasy. Let employers see how this can be an asset to them, rather than letting your value be obscured by a cocky attitude. Pay respect to dress conventions during interviews. Ask questions. Be willing to learn and accept that those who demand special treatment are the least likely to get it. It’s true that parents and older employers won’t entirely “get” the unique trials you as a Millennial face in the job market. Nevertheless, take heart in the fact that as the workforce of the future, your energy, passion and flexibility will never go unrewarded. Article provided by ConstantContent.com

WORKING IN FINANCE:

Take this job and love it.

What Should You Pick for Your Major? by Brian DeChesare

So, which major has the highest chance of getting you into investment banking? You might think that only undergraduates have to think about that one, but it comes up even when you’re beyond that stage: when you go for Master’s or MBA degrees, you need to pick a concentration or major. You shouldn’t pick classes just to get into the industry – but you also need to make sure you’re not reducing your chances of getting in by picking the “wrong” major.

Considerations

You need to consider 5 factors when picking a major: Enjoyment – Even if you pick something “easy” like Art History, it’s tough to get through it if you’re not at least somewhat interested. Your GPA – Quantum Physics might sound cool, but not if you get a 2.0 as a result. Time Requirements – You also don’t want to spend all your waking hours at the lab, because that reduces networking and activity time. Your Story – Will your major support the “story” you tell interviewers? Or will it be as illogical as The Joker? How Bankers View It – They may not know the specifics behind every single major, but they view some as “easy” and some as “hard.” It gets complicated to weigh all these factors at the undergraduate level. But it’s easy to do that at the MBA and Master’s levels, so let’s start there.

Business School

You won’t have a “major,” but you can usually pick a concentration or focus with your classes. GPA is irrelevant because many top schools don’t even award grades – and while some classes may be more difficult than others, the perceived and actual differences are smaller. So this decision is simple: pick a concentration that supports your story. If you did sales & trading, got tired of it, and now want to move into corporate finance it won’t seem logical if you pick algorithmic trading classes. But if you worked in banking and now want to move into venture capital, then “Entrepreneurial Finance” classes would make sense.

September 2014 You still can’t waltz in with a 2.5 and expect to get interviews, but a 3.3 or 3.4 GPA doesn’t look as bad if you had a difficult major like Chemical Engineering. Go for one of the “medium” difficulty majors – that way you can get a decent GPA and have time for activities outside of school.

Time for Activities

Once you’re out of school, activities don’t matter – but as a student you don’t have full-time work experience, so you need to rely on being “interesting.” You can substitute internships, studying abroad, sports, or networking in for “activities” here. Regardless of how you spend your time, you need to be able to talk about something outside of school work and summer internships. If you’ve picked a more difficult major and really have no time, try to clear one semester or one quarter and use a study abroad experience as your “interesting fact.”

Now we get to the fun part. The choice of a major at the undergraduate level is more difficult because you actually need to take into account all 5 factors – enjoyment, GPA, time requirements, your story, and how bankers view it. Rather than doing a SWOT analysis here (I’ll leave that to the consultants in the room), I would summarize it like this: Pick a major that you’re at least some- Story Support what interested in, where you can get Similar to the “Why investment banka decent GPA (> 3.5 in the US system or ing?” question, there are 2 story categories: equivalent abroad), have time for at least 1 Non-business/finance major moving into major activity outside school, and that sup- business. ports your story. an internship at a Big 4 firm, got some exposure to Transaction Advisory Services, and now wants to move into banking. While he learned a lot at the Big 4 firm, he wants to have a more direct role in shaping transactions and knows he can leverage his Accounting background to hit the ground running in banking.

Finance vs. Non-Finance Majors

You might now say, “Wait a minute – isn’t it always to your advantage to pick something like Economics/Accounting/Finance so you can tell a story around it and get decent grades?” You can’t really go wrong with one of those choices, so if you have no other preferences then it’s a good idea. Especially if you go to a lesser-known school, it’s in your best interest to pick a finance-related major because you have to work really, really hard to prove your interest. At “target” schools you have more flexibility, because bankers assume you can handle anything.

School-Specific Considerations

One special case occurs when your school is well-known in a specific field. The classic example is MIT – if you go there and major in Political Science, that would raise eyebrows no matter how accomplished you are. You’re better off picking something technical that plays to the school’s strengths. At a place like Wharton, specific classes may be important in the context of networking – hundreds of alumni have been through the same courses and you can “bond” over the experience.

Are There Any Classes You Definitely Need?

Super-advanced math classes are not helpful, so forget about those. If I had to pick 1 absolutely essential class, it would be Accounting. When you start working, you don’t want to be figuring out what an income statement is – you should be familiar with all the lingo and know how the statements link together. If your school actually offers modeling or valuation classes, those would be helpful as well – but not as essential as accounting.

What If You’ve Picked the Wrong Major?

There’s a decent chance you’ve already picked a major and completed a good portion of it – so what do you do if it’s the wrong one? If you’ve picked something that’s too easy, the best way to fix it is to add finance-related classes and turn them into a minor. If you’ve chosen something that’s too difficult, take the path of least resistance and do the bare minimum needed to finish it. Adding in finance classes in this case would not be a smart move, because you’re already overworked – you’re better off showing your interest through internships or activities.

Undeclared?

Your major itself doesn’t matter. It’s more about your major in the context of everything else: your GPA, your “story,” your internships, and your activities. So make sure yours fits in with those and tells a good story – and if you really can’t decide, just pick Finance like everyone else. Article provided by www.mergersandinquisitions.com

Finding Your Niche in The Financial Industry

T

by Glenn Curtis

he financial industry is easy enough to break into, but carving out a viable long-term career niche is tough. To succeed in this industry, one must have discipline, intelligence and a thick-skinned psyche. There are many different positions in the financial services industry, and it often takes years for individuals to find and settle into a position that is a good fit for them. So what job is the best fit for you? In this article, we’ll give you the tools you need to begin making this important decision.

Character Traits

In general, if you are a persuasive and knowledgeable individual and don’t mind working long hours, a job as a registered representative might be a good fit. If, on the other hand, you love numbers, are good at math and excel spreadsheets, and relish delving into the financials of a public company, then perhaps a career path as an analyst is your best bet. If you have both skill sets, a position as a financial advisor could suit you best. Of course, it’s important to understand that most people that enter the brokerage industry don’t end their careers in the same position in which they begin. Most use the knowledge and experience they gain in their earlier jobs in the industry to find other positions that better suits their interests. Where you end up depends on your aptitude and your desire to explore different job options.

Degree Work

Twenty years ago, it wasn’t uncommon for individuals in the financial industry to come from varied backgrounds. These days, a four-year college

It opens the most doors as well as gives the potential job applicant more alternatives should he or she want to deviate from his or her initial career path down the line.

MBA: Worthwhile?

The first step in getting the appropriate work experience is to check with your college. Often, the student services center or a guidance counselor may be able to provide you with local job listings, or actually set up interviews with potential employers.

September 2014 to work. Prospective brokers and/or analysts should try to get a job as an assistant at a local firm. Employers look for this type of experience on your resume. What if you know you want to get into the industry, but don’t exactly know the type of long-term job you want or what internship to take? It’s perfectly OK if you want to get into the industry but haven’t decided on what type of job you are aiming for. If this is the case, consider taking any front-line sales or office positions that will allow you to learn as much as possible about the industry. Again, this experience will look great your resume, and will educate you on what you might like to do down the line as you gain more experience.

If your goal is to become a registered representative and sell securities, you do not need a masters in business administration (MBA). However, if you want to break into some of the more prestigious firms’ training programs (such as Goldman Sachs), it will help to earn your MBA. As an analyst, it is rapidly becoming a must. Keep in mind that this is a highly competitive industry, and this additional degree will help set you apart from the crowd. While there are instances in which a diploma from a big-name school will help you, employers are becoming more focused on class rank and grade point average, as well as any practical experience you’ve had in the field. With that in mind, if you want to become a money manager, financial planner or enter some other specialized field within the industry, an MBA is highly recommended. To be clear, you can still obtain a position in these fields without an MBA, but preference is usually given to candidates that have had some form of Securing Work post-graduate study. In the MBA program, consider studying finance and Experience The first step in getting the economics. working for free during your internship - that is, as long as you receive a letter of recommendation for your work from your supervisor. In the long run, this is the best compensation you can ask for and your first employer may even start you off in a higher position or at a higher salary because of your experience.

Securities Licenses

Obtaining securities licenses is almost sure to advance your career in the financial services industry. As a broker, you will need a Series 7 license and a Series 63 license. This will allow you to sell stocks, bonds, and other variable securities in both your home state and other states, assuming that you and your firm become registered in those states. Additional licenses may be required as you move up the corporate ladder. For instance, if you obtain a managerial position, you may be asked to obtain your Series 24, or principal’s license. Your firm will sponsor you for these licenses. However, be forewarned: These exams are difficult and require a great deal of reading and memorization Analysts may also be asked to take the above-mentioned examinations as well as a Series 16 supervisory analyst exam, which allows them to issue and distribute reports. Additional training may require the analyst to sit for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam sessions. This series of three rigorous exams will test your financial knowledge and enable you to obtain higher-level advisory positions with hedge funds or mutual funds as a portfolio manager. The Series 7 is typically the base license. For those who want to become options principals, for example, the Series 4 license will probably be required. For those that want to branch off down the line and become equity traders, this would require a Series 55license. In short, whenever you branch off to specialize in a given field, an additional license will be needed, and your firm will sponsor you for that. You cannot take those exams without being an employee of an NASD-registered firm and, typically, you must first attain your Series 7 qualifications before sitting for any specialized licensure.

Training Programs

Many firms do not offer sophisticated training programs. When this is the case, the would-be broker or analyst typically starts as someone’s assistant. This is an entry-level position that will allow you to move up the ladder, depending on your aptitude and level of ambition. There are also a large number of firms, particularly the larger bulge bracket companies that offer formal training programs, which can last for about a year and where your production, and/or progress is tracked and measured regularly against your peers. Often, these programs are very stressful, as they are typically considered your probationary period. The good news is that if you make it through these training programs, your odds for success within the industry improve dramatically.

In order to move up the corporate ladder, you must constantly measure yourself against your fellow employees to determine whether your skills measure up. This may mean staying late or putting in some extra work to make sure your projects are top notch.

Moving Up the Ranks

In some jobs, seniority is a major factor in moving up the corporate ladder. Although seniority might help you in your Wall Street job, typically only the smartest, most aggressive employees advance. This means that you must know your job and be diligent. You must also constantly measure yourself against your fellow employees to determine whether your skills measure up. This may mean staying late or putting in some extra work to make sure your projects are top notch.

Long-Term Career Objectives

Analysts seem to have the most career choices in the industry. They can become producing brokers and can even make the switch to becoming financial writers. Brokers can make those same switches, but it is much harder. This is because a broker is usually only involved in the sales process, and has little or no involvement in the research process. In addition, they often have very little opportunity to hone their writing skills, which is vital to becoming an analyst. Many brokers eventually decide that they want to specialize in options, or become branch managers. In this case, their sales experience puts them on a better path to achieving that goal.

The Bottom Line

Breaking into the financial services industry isn’t too difficult, but building a career and earning a reputation as a savvy player is tough. You should expect the process to be mentally trying and time consuming. Succeeding and moving up the corporate ladder will depend on your desire to succeed and beat out increasingly stiff competition. Article provided by www.investopedia.com

5 Tips for Getting A Government Job F ederal jobs offer a lot of competitive perks, and securing one as a veteran may be an easier task than plying the civilian markets for work. Whether it’s secure income, healthcare, or retirement benefits, the federal government can be a great employer. It’s important to know that the process of obtaining a federal job is about as complicated as finding one in the private sector, but can be very different. There are tons of opportunities out there, but there are some specific methods the government uses to hire individuals. If you’re a veteran seriously considering a federal job, Forbes recently posted a list of five tips for getting a government job which we’ve covered for you bellow.

1. Survey the market

Although federal jobs are far fewer in number than civilian jobs, that doesn’t mean the market is any less complicated. The government employs over two million people, so there is a lot to learn in regards to what jobs are available and what’s in demand. One of the best places to start is a job search engine, such as the one found on Military. com. Even if you don’t find something right away, understanding what jobs are being posted will help focus your efforts in securing federal work.

for you. Wading in expecting to find opportunity everywhere, however, will leave you frustrated and exhausted. It’s important to prioritize the types of jobs you can do with experience requirements that match your own. If you don’t have a clear idea on how to fit those roles, take a look at the Military. com skills translator, talk to a career counselor, or just take time to meditate on what direction you want to take.

3. Utilizing Your Network

Military service usually lends itself to strong interpersonal connections, and they’re a fruitful vector in searching for federal jobs. Even if no one in your direct circle of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances works in a federal job, the chances are one of them knows someone who does. Once you’ve established who’s connected to federal jobs, start asking them about how to make yourself a better candidate, what job opportunities they’re aware of, and how they secured their positions. Hopefully someone can take your resume and push it to the top of a job application stack, but at the very least you’ll get some good advice.

4. Resume Checkup

Updating your resume is always a good idea, but especially so for government jobs. One of the best ways to strengthen your resume is to ensure it contains the proper 2. Target Priority With millions of personnel and thousands keywords. Some organizations use keyof job openings, the odds are good that word searches and will kick out resumes there’s a federal job somewhere that’s right that don’t contain enough of the right kind,

and even humans tend to hone in on nice, easily digestible keywords. Federal jobs pull from an extensive list of jargon, and any time spent learning those terms will be very beneficial in marketing yourself.

5. Hurry Up and Wait

Patience is the keyword for any job seeker – your overall job search will likely take months. Searching, sending out resumes, following up, interviewing, and following up again can take a hefty toll, but persistent effort pays off. Think about the job search as a job in and of itself. Take an hour or two every day to work on it and you’ll gain some momentum over time. Patience is required not just in letting the whole process play out on its own, but in waiting a week or two to hear back from a company, or to send a check-in email. If you can work through the grind, actually tackling your new job will be a breeze. Article provided by www.military.com

here is much more to getting a job, or starting a new career, than just writing a resume and mailing it out to some classified ads in the newspaper, or emailing it to an online posting, or going to a placement agency. Advance preparation is critical to landing the type of position, or starting the new endeavor, you really want and in which you will be the most happy and successful. Below we will examine what you should do to find the key factors that will help you focus your job search and ensure your second career campaign gets off to an organized and positive start. First, ask yourself the following questions: • Am I reaching military retirement age or near my end-of-service? • Do I have enough money saved to support myself and my family if I retire/separate now? • Should I start looking for a second career?

• Should I re-enlist or continue in my current military occupational field? • Would a vacation or taking leave change my outlook? • Is it only with my present supervisor or commander that I am having difficulties? • Is my advancement stalled? • Will further promotions occur too slowly for me? • Do I believe that I’m adequately rewarded for my work? • Would a lateral move or transfer make a difference? • Am I glamorizing other careers and/or civilian life? • Am I fulfilling my lifelong dreams? Or have they changed? Recognize that searching for the position you want is a full-time job in itself. Make a personal commitment of your time and energy. Take the time to analyze your life, relationships, career and financial goals. Also, obtaining the position you want requires a sales campaign on your part. YOU are the product and employers are potential customers. You must be able to “sell” yourself, but to have the knowledge to do this successfully, you must develop a clear understanding of your skills, interests, values, abilities, expertise and personality.

Assess Yourself

Many of us are so busy just working and getting by that we’ve given very little attention to what genuinely interests or motivates us. If you’re unsure about what you want from your life, career, relationships, etc., take some time and think about the various possibilities. What are your personal, family and career needs? Be honest with yourself. Think of what you actually want and like, not what you should want and like. Think back to the things that made you feel the most satisfied. Try and come to some conclusions. Many people spend most of their lives unsuccessfully trying to figure out exactly what they want. You owe it to yourself to do better than that! Analyze yourself; take a pen and paper and write down the answers to the following questions: • Who am I? (Many of us base our self image on what we DO, rather than who we ARE) • What is it that I most want to do? (Work for myself, go to school, travel) • Why do I want to do it? (Financial security, personal ambition, curious) • What are my goals and objectives? (Independence, early retirement, entrepreneurial desire) • What do I want to get out of life? (Rewarding career, secure income, personal satisfaction) • What kind of lifestyle do I want? • What are my hobbies? • Where do I want to live? Work? Recreate? • Could I live in a small town? City? Skills Inventory:

Analyzing the following categories of skills will help you develop your job search goals, write your resume and prepare for your interviews. To complete the list, think about the most significant accomplishments and experiences in your military service and/or civilian employment, as well as in your academic and extracurricular activities. Next, check off the skills you’ve developed. Then write descriptions next to the most appropriate skill items you checked off in the list. Next, develop a concise list of your abilities and skills. Finally, analyze the results to understand more clearly what your strengths, weaknesses, talents and interests are.

you the job you REALLY want. You need something extra to give you an edge over the competition. You need a plan of attack. Before you start your job search, take the time to develop a plan and setting some goals. Here’s a handy method adapted from “Self Magazine.” Write these six headings on separate index cards or sheets of paper: • Personal Goals • Career Goals • Financial Goals • Relationship Goals • Academic Goals • Other Goals On each card, write down all the goals for that heading (at least three) which come to mind, don’t screen out any at this point. Look over each card and check-off the three goals that are the most current or important to you. On a separate piece of paper, list these 18 goals. Look over the combined list of 18 goals and check-off the three goals that are the most significant to you currently. These three goals are the ones you should focus on first. On separate sheets of paper, list the three goals in terms of Objective Statements i.e., “I will arrange interviews with at least twenty employers during each month of my job search.” Develop an action plan for each Objective Statement, with goals that are: • Measurable • Realistic • Within your control As an integral part of your action plan, specify the approach you’ll use, including: • Steps to take • Information to collect • Resources available. Maintain a daily journal or a calendar, tracking each specific task you accomplish or step you take, no matter how minor, towards accomplishing each of your three goals. Reward yourself, even for achieving the simplest task. Match the amount of the reward to the level of accomplishment. Once you’ve accomplished these three goals, return to the original list of 18 and identify the next three to undertake. Think positively—those who think in positive terms get positive results, in their lives, careers and businesses. Good goal setting and career planning will give you a strong start, and lead to a successful conclusion, in your job search.

Developing an Action Plan

Now take the time to write down a short (preferably one-page) outline of an action plan, using the personal profile of yourself derived from the foregoing exercise. This plan, call it your “Career Campaign Plan”, should serve as the working outline of how to achieve your goals and objectives taking into consideration your skills and strengths, as well as weaknesses, competencies and desires. Develop a time table, calendar and checklist to track and check-off each of the objectives and goals as you achieve them. Stick to your action plan and achieve your goals in a timely manner - and don’t forget to reward yourself for a job well done! For some ideas of the kinds of approaches and tools you might want to include in your campaign plan, see “Job Hunting Strategies”.

September 2014 2ND CAREER PLANNING

After conducting an honest self-assessment, you should have a better awareness of who you are, what you want and how your capabilities and interests might best relate to the world of business. You have also avoided the major error of those who seek just a job and don’t plan for a career. For many seeking employment, the want ads or an employment agency become the sole source of information about jobs. There are better ways, and we will show you! In a planned career campaign you research, evaluate, and direct your efforts to predetermined goals. Your plan should include: assessing yourself and where you “fit” in the job market, preparing financial goals, developing career goals, examining job hunting strategies, executing a resume and letter writing campaign, networking, mentoring, interviewing, and negotiating. When you first consider seeking a second career, or are graduating from school, or separating from the military, begin your planning at least six months out. Even in today’s relatively favorable job market, it may take another six months before you land a job! Planning is vital to a short and successful job search, and timing should be a critical part of your plan. A plan can, and will, enhance your chances of not only finding a job, but finding the “best” job in the quickest period of time.

and complex it is best to approach it with a simplified view of classifications. Think of job classification more in terms of education, training, knowledge, responsibility, experience, and authority levels. Jobs are often classified into three markets or categories. These are: • Unskilled • Skilled or Semi-skilled • Professional Unskilled labor is the largest job market and requires the least amount of education. Repetitive tasks on production lines are typical of unskilled labor. Upward mobility is possible but requires a company willing to train internally. Responsibility in unskilled jobs is usually restricted to meeting standards established by the company. Pay can be minimum wage or higher. Skilled & Semi-skilled markets are generally associated with either the trades (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons, pipe-cutters, mechanics, etc.) or clerical occupa-

Job Classifications

Finding where you “fit” into the job market is a critical, initial step in your job search. Don’t sell yourself or your qualifications short, but don’t waste time researching a career path that is not appropriate because of a lack of training, education or experience. If the career path you desire requires additional training or education, do it as soon as you can, before leaving your current job, graduating, or departing military service. You’ll never regret the choice to improve yourself and your skills. Know the job classifications you’re qualified to pursue; clarify them or change them as necessary. The job market is so vast

tions. Many skilled jobs require a great deal of responsibility, technical ability and knowledge. If you plan to enter the trades, study labor unions. In some states labor unions have gained a monopoly organizing the trade occupations. Knowledge of unions will also help you with the membership process when trying to get a job where unions are organized. While unions are experiencing an overall decline in the United States however, they usually still provide good pay and benefit packages. If it’s a non-union, or “right to work” state, then it’s a more competitive market and wages will tend to be lower. The professional market is designed to accept those people who want specific positions in an organization as opposed to a job in general. Entry-level management positions are training levels used to progressively advance college graduates or new hires into greater areas of responsibility. Professional positions require: • Upward mobility in a chain-of-command or into a staff function • Significant leadership, supervisory or management skills A college degree or high level of technical • knowledge • Adding profits, stopping losses or fixing costs

Learn Emerging Technologies

Staying abreast of new technology trends has become essential. Employers today are looking to hire individuals who will help them stay abreast of new technologies, and, frankly, understand emerging technologies perhaps better than the employer themselves! Even if you have to go back to school or take a certification course that you pay for yourself, don’t rely on just what you know and what you’ve learned from past employers, get out there and learn new technologies. Take advantage of free or inexpensive training seminars and training programs available from vendors of new technologies. There are lots of one or half-day programs offered around most major cities. There are also sources available on the Internet and through on-line services. Participation in technical and professional associations will also expand your knowledge of the types and the ways others are using old and new technologies. Besides, colleagues you met at a meeting can be added to your network of contacts to search for a new job or for information on a company in which you’re interested.

Communicate Effectively

Cultivate your communication and inter-personal skills. Interviewers feel that the way you communicate with them in an interview will be the way you communicate with a colleague, boss, or client, so prove that you can do it well. If communicating is not one of your strengths, improve it by taking classes or joining Toastmasters (an excellent networking opportunity as well!) Also, there are many free or inexpensive one-day seminars and classes on business and technical writing, making presentations and communicating with others. If you feel this is your weakness, invest the time and money to improve your communication skills before you start your job search. Article provided by TAOnline.net. Choosing The Right Fonts for Your Resume— Some Tips for Success

In

by Beconrad

One of the most important considerations when designing your resume or CV is the readability of the final document. While many electronically submitted resumes are screened by computers, those that make it through will be read by actual human beings. If the hiring manager or HR executive who gets your resume finds it hard to read, you will not be making a very good first impression.

Use the Default Format But Dress It Up

If you use Microsoft Word, you have access to a wide variety of resume formats. That can be both a good and bad thing. It is good in that it makes creating a resume or CV faster and easier, but it can be a bad thing if you fail to customize the format for your own needs. If your resume looks the same as all the others, it will not stand out, and it may not make it through the automated screening process. If you

use a template to create your resume or CV, you need to go back through and adjust it to make it your own. That could mean changing the fonts to something like Chiller or Informal, or adjusting the font size for certain portions of your resume. Making the headings a bit bigger, for instance, or rendering your education in a slightly different typeface, can give the document a custom look and get the attention of the hiring manager.

Take a Last Look

One of the smartest things you can do when creating a resume is to take one last look before hitting send. In this electronic age it is all too easy to blanket the world with resumes, but that will do no good if the document is not up to par. Read your resume one last time, taking a critical look at both the content and the format. The general impression should be one of sleek and simple elegance. There is a time and place for fancy fonts, but your resume is not that place. Clean simple fonts are more readable, and more pleasing to the eye, and that is good news for your job search. Easy Reading

Standard fonts like Times New Roman, Arial and Verdana are generally easier to read, making them both good choices for your resume or CV. Avoid fancy and non-standard fonts whenever possible; those fonts can be difficult to read and very distracting. Furthermore, non-standard fonts may not render properly on some computers, and that could mean the hiring manager will not be able to read your resume at all. If you truly want to dress up your resume and give it a bit more personality, consider fonts like Chiller or Informal. Those fonts are easily read by both machines and humans, but they provide a more distinct look for your resume.

TEAMWORK, DEDICATION AND A DESIRE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

the end, it is the content of your resume—your experience, education and professional accomplishments that should shine through. What you have already accomplished in your career, and what you plan to do in the future, should be what gets the attention of the employer. Even so, the format of your resume matters as well, and choosing the wrong format or fonts could cause your qualifications to be overlooked. Knowing which fonts to use is one of the best ways to make sure your resume or CV stands out in a good way and makes it through the increasingly complicated and sophisticated screening process many companies now use.

Core Facets of A Professional Presence

P

Neil Kokemuller

rofessionalism has a somewhat different meaning from one industry or career to the next. However, several core aspects of projecting a professional presence remain constant in most employment settings. Recognizing these elements and managing your image contribute to job success, promotions and high earning potential.

Dress and Grooming

Your dress and grooming are the most important factors in creating a positive first impression and maintaining a strong professional image. Though the clothes vary by industry, maintaining a quality, ironed look for your wardrobe is expected. Other things you should do to maximize your visual impression include combing your hair, shaving and covering up visible tattoos.

a sense of urgency or pressure to perform. A poised professional remains calm, shows discipline in decision-making and actions, and conveys stability during moments of pressure or stress. A confident demeanor conveys confidence to managers, colleagues and clients. Showing confidence in your abilities and work improves your chances of gaining favor with each of these stakeholders.

Positive Facial Expressions

A person’s facial expressions tell a story even without spoken words. A friendly smile when greeting someone creates warmth, comfort and rapport. In sales, for instance, get a prospect on your side with an engaging smile. A frown demonstrates a lack of confidence, enthusiasm or enjoyment in your work. The way you “carry yourself” communicates important messages about your character. Posture, stride and pace, along with your facial expression affect how others perceive you. A person who “lights up a room” upon entering commands attention from coworkers or customers. A positive initial impression impacts the overall perception others have of you. Walk talk with a firm, confident stride.

Body Language and Gestures

Other body language movements and gestures affect your presence as well. Some habits, such as rocking back and forth, crossing your arms and avoiding eye contract may cause a person to perceive you as nervous, reserved, lacking confidence or disinterested. Instead, show engagement with eye contact, a calm presence, and natural movements and hand gestures.

Conclusions

Your appearance, poise, facial expressions, entrance and carriage, demeanor and gestures all communicate messages to others whether you intend them to or not. Recognizing how you project to others in these areas allows you to make adjustments and improve your presence. Article provided ConstantContent.com

8 Ways to Give Employees More Effective Feedback Using A Growth Mindset

E

ffective feedback gives employees information they can realistically use to increase their learning and improve their performance. It abandons a “fixed mindset” that sees skills as “innate abilities” and instead employs a “growth mindset” that sees skills as developed through continued effort and practice.

1. Don’t confuse experience with ability.

What appears as “smart” or as “innate ability” is usually a result of having had more useful exposure and experience. Employees who seem less adept at particular skills may just have less preparation, not less potential. Make it clear to your team that you understand that skill and ability improve with practice just as exercise strengthens a muscle.

2. R ecognize that an employee’s performance on a particular project demonstrates their skill at a point in time, not their ability or potential.

When employees make mistakes, stress that they have not mastered this set of skills or tasks “yet” but that you have confidence that with enough time and effort they can master it.

3. F ocus feedback on progress, persistence, and effort.

Use specific comments like, “Great improvement on x; you’re ready to move on,” or “Good progress; you need some more practice with x.” Make no comments that imply the employee’s performance is based on “natural” ability.

4. Make feedback concrete and specific.

Avoid using vague characterizations about what employees need to improve, such as “your projects generally are not up to par” or “you need to improve your leadership or communication skills.” Instead, offer specific examples from past work that illustrate where this work falls short and specific suggestions for how to improve.

5. R esist the temptation to lower standards for success.

Set your standards high and tell employees the truth about how their performance compares with those standards thus far. At the same time, be sure to also ask the employee if you have provided all the tools they need to meet the standard, or if there might be additional resources they need.

6. B e sure that your feedback incorporates all four elements of “wise feedback.”

First, explain that you hold all employees to a high standard and that you believe feedback is crucial for meeting those standards. Second, clarify that your corrections identify where the employee has not yet met that standard. Third, offer suggestions that tell them what work at that standard looks like. Finally, express your confidence that the employee has the capacity to reach that standard.

7. Set realistic goals and timelines for improvement.

Identify the steps needed for employee growth, break these down into manageable goals, set a realistic timeline for accomplishing each goal, and identify the resources employees will need to meet these goals. Provide them with “stretch” assignments that help them to expand their skills without “biting off more than they can chew.”

Page 25

Effective feedback gives employees information they can realistically use to increase their learning and improve their performance. 8. A lways offer the opportunity to discuss your feedback.

Ask the employee for their perspective and in the end, be sure that you and the employee fully understand the next steps the employee should make toward improvement. Article provided by the National Center for Women & Information Technology. For more information, please visit www.ncwit.org

5 Easy Principles for Realistic Goal Setting

M

Page 45

by Jeff Charles

any have heard of the term “SMART Goals”. SMART is a system that makes it easier to set effective and realistic goals. Using the SMART system enables people to take more control of their lives especially when it comes to realizing their dreams. So what does SMART stand for? SMART is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. In order to set a SMART goal, it must fit into all five of these criteria. In order to illustrate these principles, we can use the example of Anna, whose ultimate goal in life is to lose weight. Sure, Anna could simply make up in her mind that she wants to lose weight. While this is a great goal, it is both unclear and not actionable. However, when we apply the SMART goal principle to Anna’s desire to lose weight, we can come up with something far more effective that will make Anna an object of envy to all of her friends. Men will want her! Women will want to be her! The first rule of a SMART goal is that it must be specific. It must answer some or all of these five questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? In Anna’s case, what activities is she going to engage in to lose weight? How frequently is she going to engage in these activities? The second rule deals whether or not the goal is measurable. How much does Anna want to weigh? How much does she weigh now? It is not enough to know only that Anna wants to lose weight; we must also know how much weight she wants to drop. The third rule is that the goal must be attainable. Knowing how much weight Anna wants to lose and how she will go about doing it is an important step, but she also must think about whether or not her goal is realistic. Anna may want to lose 100 lbs in one month, but the obvious question she needs to ask this: Is this realistic? Maybe Anna should shoot for a goal that is easier to attain without killing herself (that would be quite counterproductive). The fourth rule is that Anna’s goal has to be relevant. This simply means that the behaviors one engages in must actually contribute to the achievement of the goal. Are the behaviors Anna chooses to engage in relevant to her desired result?

If Anna wants to lose weight, eating out at “Bubba’s Greasy Burger Joint” every night will not help. However, watching her diet and eating healthy is a behavior that will help her reach her goal. Finally, the fifth rule is that the goal must be time-bound. This means that Anna’s goal must be set to a deadline. Without a deadline, there’s no sense of urgency. Deadlines should be realistic without giving us too much room to procrastinate. They can even be broken down into smaller deadlines as well. Anna could say that she wants to lose 20 lbs in one month and break that down into 5 lbs per week. So if we apply this to Anna’s weight loss goal, it could look something like this: Anna will lose 20 lbs (measurable) in one month (time-bound) by working out in the gym 3 - 5 days per week (specific, relevant and attainable). See? It’s not so hard! This is just a basic example of how this style of goal setting can be more effective. One could easily add in diet, types of exercise, and other habits if they choose. Anna’s example shows that it is evident that goals cannot be wishy-washy thoughts that stay inside your head. If we are to achieve our goals, we must make them easier to understand and accomplish. If we apply the SMART system in achieving our goals and meeting our objectives, we will become more effective, happier, and far more productive. Article provided ConstantContent.com

— Be An Inspiration —

Learning how to achieve goals will help inspire others to pursue their own goals with the same determination you had in achieving yours. There are far too many stories of failure and not enough stories of success. No matter how big or small your goal is, do everything you can to accomplish it. Your accomplishment can possibly inspire someone to become more than they thought they could become.

INTERVIEW TIP: Be Likable

H

by Neil Kokemuller

iring committees spend hours evaluating applications and preparing interview questions. Quality candidates spend hours preparing and practicing for their interview. Much of the decision often comes down to one simple factor. Are you likable? Two Key Questions

Despite the thousands of interview questions already in existence and the new ones created daily, hiring managers typically evaluate two key internal questions. One question is, "Why should I hire you?" The other is, "Do I like you?" or, "Would I want to work with you?" While it is important to spend hours preparing to address the "Why should I hire you?" premise, it is equally important to plan to be likable. You cannot change who you are, but you can show off your likable qualities with an effective plan.

Strategies to Be Likable

most hiring managers for most jobs. Relaxed confidence is better. Answer questions with a focus on showing why you match well with the company and position. Don't project the attitude that the company has no choice but to hire you if it wants to succeed. Genuine confidence means you sell your skills and abilities with confidence answers and compelling examples. Most importantly, engage the hiring manager or interviewers throughout the process. Look each person in the eyes as you respond. Maintain a relaxed, friendly facial expression. Participate in small amounts of humor if your intuition tells you the hiring manager is open to it.

Show Appreciation

End the interview on a strong note by showing sincere appreciation. Thank the interviewer for his time. Follow up with a thank-you note. A friendly, comfortable exit makes a compelling last impression.

You cannot change who you are, but you can show off your likable qualities with an effective plan.

Your first impression impacts your likability in a major way. A hiring manager makes judgments about your personality, character and diligence just by observing your interview attire, facial expression, handshake and initial greeting. Get off to a high-impact start by dressing the part, offering a friendly smile and exchanging genuine pleasantries. Balance confidence with humility. Arrogance is not a likable trait to

Conclusions

If you don't like people and you aren't a likable person, work on those characteristics before applying for a job in which people matter. Assuming you have interest in people and are a likable person, showcase these qualities in your interview. Managers are people. They want to hire good people to work with. Few people hire someone who rubs them the wrong way during the interview. Article provided ConstantContent.com

TOP JOBS FOR THE FUTURE

H

by Michael T. Robinson

ow would you feel if the job you’ve been doing for most of your life just moved offshore without any warning? What if you just spent several years getting an education for a job that was no longer in high demand? How would you like to know the secrets to choosing a satisfying career that will also be in high demand? By understanding the major trends that are affecting our lives, you will be able to play an active role in planning and directing your career. By understanding these trends you will have a better chance of seeing the big changes before they hit. This look into the future will show you the careers that are expected to have high demand and some that aren’t. But more importantly this article will show you the basics of “trend spotting” so that you can make your own intelligent career choices.

Trend Spotting

By understanding the major trends that affect jobs you will be able to make better career decisions for yourself. Trends are like waves on the ocean. Some are very big, some are very small. Some trends last only a few years like the DOT COM trend, while others go on seemingly forever. The trends we are interested in may be as short as a few years or as long as 20+ years. Just like waves, trends move and change everything they come in contact with. If you aren’t prepared for the big wave it will wash over you, tumbling you like a toy in the ocean. Initially, trends start off so small that most people don’t notice them. Eventually trends build up to a crescendo. Somewhere in between they make the evening news. The trick is to spot trends just as they begin, so that you have time to take action and change your life. An even better trick would be to predict the trends before they start. To get a feel for job trends, let’s look at a few that have come and gone.

equal opportunity employment journal A large portion of programming, tech support, data entry, and accounting jobs can be handled remotely from countries such as India where they speak perfectly polite Queen’s English, and where they have excellent educational systems. This puts many lucrative jobs at risk. Even extremely high tech, high skill jobs such as Analog Integrated Circuit Designers have

Learn a trade or skill that requires hands on presence such as a carpenter, nurse, physician, dental hygienist, or hair stylist. Essentially you want to pick a career that requires your physical presence and that can not easily be done remotely. Combining proximity with creativity in a career gives you added security. Does this mean you should panic and get out of software development or any other high tech, high paying job? It depends. The first projects to move offshore are usually the most simple, low risk projects. Adding distance and cultural differences almost always adds time and complexity to any development project. The types of projects that will stay onshore: • Need to be done very quickly • Are very complex • Require lots of face to face interaction • Are tough to define and quite ambiguous Projects that represent low risk to management, such as making minor upgrades to a product, or copying someone else’s product, will most certainly be moved offshore.

We have only seen the first wave of automation in our lives. The effect so far has been to eliminate jobs involving highly repetitive tasks. The net effect has been fewer “unskilled” jobs. Automation is the result of the need to reduce cost which in turn is driven by a company’s need to become more competitive, to be able to grow market share, and to generate higher earnings for investors. Automation, one of the first methods for reducing cost, had been a big trend between 1950 and 2000. Jobs that were not easily mechanized, such as many manufacturing jobs, have already been moved to countries where the cost of labor is cheaper. Most of these jobs have been relocated to Mexico, Taiwan, India and China. Ten years from now, as the labor costs in those countries rise, the jobs may move to Africa or North Korea. The next phase of automation will not occur in the factory, but in our homes, in our lives, and in the information that we use. Retail store positions will decline gradually as home shopping and Internet shopping continue to grow. There will always be retail stores and retail positions, just fewer of them. One of the more positive trends in retail was started by Walmart. Employing older, retired people to man the store floor was a brilliant move and a win-win for everyone. Demand for cashiers will gradually decline as stores install self service scanners and

We think that with increased competition, companies will find they have to do a much better job of differentiating their products and services. Marketing positions should see good demand, but only for the best. Marketing is one of those fields where the mediocre don’t survive. We think Strategic Marketing will become even more critical as companies find they need new and better strategies to succeed.

Lawyers

Now would be a good time for a lawyer joke but I don’t have any. There will probably always be a need for attorneys. However we think that as the public begins to understand how the cost of doing business has risen due to the influence of trial attorneys there should be some reduction in demand for that sort of lawyer. We can only hope. We do see an increased demand for patent and intellectual property lawyers, as well as estate and tax planning lawyers. These are people who are experts in a specific field such as bio tech, tax law, copyright law, etc. They are experts first and lawyers second as opposed to ambulance chasing attorneys. If you go into law, make sure you know how you are going to add real value.

The trend towards a growing older population that is living longer is already creating high demand in products and services tailored to this demographic. Home healthcare and nursing homes are just two areas to benefit. We see healthcare as a great field for many years to come. Insurance companies, politicians and trial lawyers will unfortunately continue their negative impact on this critical field for some time. None the less, even with breakthrough medical technologies, people will continue to need healthcare workers. One threat however is if the politicians reduce the licensing requirements for medical professionals, allowing less educated, possibly poorly trained people into this field. Healthcare needs to be high quality.

The Internet Trend

By linking everyone’s home directly to manufacturers and service providers the entire infrastructure and sales channel has been changing. Anyone who makes his or her living as a middleman had better change careers or become expert at adding unique value.

The Vanishing Middleman

The middleman in many business transactions will gradually disappear largely as a result of technology and competition. With increased competition, neither the manufacturer nor the customer will be willing to pay for the added cost of the middleman unless he adds substantial value. Who are the middlemen? Middlemen are found between the manufacturer and the end customer. Usually this is sales people and retailers. For instance, if you can purchase your car over the Internet, why go through a car salesman. If you can purchase airplane tickets over the Internet, directly from the airline, why use a travel agent.
