I

t’s holiday time again and every year it feels like it arrives 3 months earlier than the year before! Is it just me? Am I getting old?

It’s time to wrap up the old year by closing out the year-end books and looking toward the future while we think about wrting our new year’s resolutions. I’m hopeful and am actually looking foward to 2013 and what it has to offer. Interest rates are down, home and retail sales are increasing and the number of people out of work is decreasing. These are all good things. I’m in the mood to focus on the good things, large and small. My family and friends are well. The winter has been mild, and I can’t think of much to complain about. I wish all of this and more for our readers today and in the coming year. Please remember, there is always, always, always something to be grateful for. ‘Tis the season. Happy Holidays, Lisa Petty Editor Equal Opportunity Employment Journal

Team Building:

Working with Diversity

O

by Craig Borysowich

ne of the characteristics of project teams is that they bring together a diversity of experiences, personal backgrounds, work styles, personalities, and cultural perspectives. The purpose of this segment is to provide some guidelines that: · acknowledge and respond to diversity within the project team · acilitate the support and management of diversity to enable all members More and more the workplace is of the project team to recognizing that diversity contributes to achieve better decision-making and increases the their potential potential for innovation and excellence. · e nsure that each member of the team has the maximum opportunity to contribute to the project.

Method

Within a diverse team, there is a clear risk of misinterpreting one another for many reasons, including: · differing language and jargon, · differing values and life styles, · lack of understanding about other cultures. To manage diversity effectively, it is important to invest time, effort, and conscious thought in: · understanding diversity, · avoiding stereotyping and prejudice, · recognizing and avoiding exclusion activities.

Understanding Diversity

Diversity is not something that is defined by race, gender, or disability. Diversity includes race, gender, age, marital status, personal and work background and experience, education, personality, lifestyle, sexual preference, physical ability, native language, national origin, role and tenure in the organization, values, and world views. The workplace is recognizing that diversity contributes to better decision-making and increases the potential for innovation and excellence. The need is to value all differences and cultivate a climate where people are appreciated for being different, and everyone is encouraged to be conscious of and responsive to a wide range of differences.

Avoiding Stereotyping and Prejudice

A natural human tendency is to categorize things. However, when we categorize people into identifiable groups, such as “caucasians,” “gays,” or “handicapped,” based on what is (or appears to be) readily visible, the tendency is to then fill in other erroneous information about that person based on the groups that we have identified the person with. This form of prejudice is not limited to the ways that we think about other people. Very often, one of the most painful forms of prejudice is when a person feels a lessening in self-worth, because he or she has internalized what other people have said about the groups that he or she identifies with. Rather than “simplifying” things by categorization, a better approach is to describe people using more detail rather than less. Most of what defines us as individuals exists below the surface. Even within the same family, children can be very different. By looking for more detail, it is possible to find additional qualities that can be appreciated. The key to success is to encourage more direct and visible support by co-workers and management for an environment that welcomes curiosity about others. At the beginning of any work relationship, share information about who you are and what you want. Learn who the other person is and Untitled-1 1

what he or she wants. The more relevant information you know about someone, the better you can understand that person, and the easier it will be to work with that person. For example, if someone is reacting badly to a business situation, it could be because something distressing is happening in that person’s private life that is temporarily affecting work performance Search out and value differences, so that misunderstandings and misinterpretations are less likely to occur. Try to avoid situations where any person feels that his or her unique set of characteristics, and beliefs about work styles, is the one and only appropriate way to behave.

Helping Veterans Transition to the Workplace

Avoiding Exclusion Activities

There are many ways in which groups are created that exclude others, either consciously or unconsciously (out of habit). Examples of exclusion activities include: · going out for a drink after work, or organizing a golf game, where some individuals within the team may feel awkward or uncomfortable, · in a group of predominantly men (or women), doing things as a group and assuming that a solitary member of the other sex would not want to join in (effectively giving the appearance of either a men’s or women’s club that excludes members of the opposite sex), · arranging work group events on religious holy days of minority individuals, or holding a Christmas dinner dance. It is important to think through such activities not only from your own perspective, but also from the perspective of the other people in the team with whom you interact. The tendency to include or exclude others is often almost automatic. Breaking such habits takes thought, time, effort. Article first appeared on Toolbox.com

any employers value armed services veterans as employees for their leadership, performance under pressure, loyalty, integrity, and ability to work as part of a team. Furthermore, hiring veterans can demonstrate an employer’s social responsibility, patriotism, and willingness to hire diverse candidates. Still, there are steps employers should make to help those returning from military service—especially those in combat situations—shift to the workplace. “As our troops transition from the longest war in U.S. history, we must prepare for their return,” explains Ed Crenshaw, U.S. Navy veteran and president and CEO of DESTIN Enterprises, an employment services and consulting firm that developed the “Preparing Employers to Reintegrate Combat Exposed Veterans with Disabilities” (PERCEVD) diversity training program. “Many [veterans] have served multiple combat tours and the latest statistics reflect that one in five may now experience some form of combat-related mental health impairment.” Two common combat-related mental health conditions are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), although neither is limited to veterans. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that develops after a person experiences or witnesses an extremely distressing event involving actual or threatened death or physical harm. A TBI is an injury to the brain caused by a person's head being hit, shaken violently, or penetrated by an object. Crenshaw notes that approximately 1.4 million Americans per year experience TBIs, and 50 percent of these injuries are caused by auto accidents. In many cases, PTSD and TBI can be treatable with medications, counseling, therapy, and/or time. “Although many employers consider it altruistic to hire transitioning veterans, some workplace environments may inadvertently exacerbate conditions by exposing employees

to potential PTSD trigger issues,” Crenshaw notes. These trigger issues can vary based on the workplace or social environment, along with certain occupation requirements. Crenshaw explains that PTSD triggers can represent certain sounds, images, smells, and even people who can produce flashbacks, anxieties, or intrusive thoughts related to life-threatening experiences and/or memories of intense situations. As a result, it is important for employers to provide sensitivity training and make necessary accommodations for someone with PTSD, TBI, and other disabilities to be able to be comfortable in the workplace and maximize their work experience. Crenshaw says that a lack of inclusive practices and a failure to provide appropriate support resources for returning veterans (including those with hidden disabilities) can create mistakes and significant problems.

Support and reassurance also comes in the form of demonstrating the company’s or organization’s commitment to veterans in their culture, community outreach, literature, and media.

a baseline understanding of the various physical and hidden disabilities. “Many workplace accommodations are considered very reasonable and cost less than $500,” Crenshaw adds. “These measures can help to increase productivity, mitigate litigation, reduce turnover and create more conducive workplace environments.” Following are some tips from Crenshaw for working with veterans, specifically those with PTSD or TBIs:

Create a workplace environment in which veterans can work comfortablyProvide flexible schedules:

Paint cheerful colors in office and work areas. Write down instructions for cognitive impaired employees. Respect medication-related ups and downs. Encourage proper amounts of rest, exercise, and healthy living habits. Provide diversity sensitivity training. Allow employees the opportunity to sit facing doors and windows.

Implement supportive practices:

Avoid discussions of war or related controversial subjects. Practice patience in employee and customer interactions. Acknowledge military experience during employment interviews. Acknowledge military customs and holidays. Provide mentors, employee assistance programs, and support programs. Include veterans and persons with disabilities in career fair activities. Include feedback from focus groups in business decisions.

Crenshaw says employee support is an essential ingredient toward recognizing diversity. Support may consist of providing new employees with former veterans as mentors, or referring individuals to medical service providers, veterans' organizations, and focus groups to help with adjustment challenges. Employee assistance program (EAP) personnel should also be trained to recognize and understand the common needs of Have strict policies that address veteran personnel, as well as their spouses. persons with disabilities: “They should be prepared to refer veterans to support programs for Do not tolerate offensive jokes and remarks. family counseling, sleep disorders, substance and/or alcohol abuse, finanPractice proper etiquette towards persons with disabilities. cial counseling programs and other areas of need,” he notes. “Workplace Emphasize respect and inclusive practices. IT Salary Levels—

Page 7

Staffers vs. Superstars:

I

by James Maguire

f you’ve worked in IT for any length of time, you know that IT salary levels can vary wildly between staffers with the same job title. As in any industry, in the tech sector factors like experience, specialized knowledge, and overall talent can – and often do – dramatically affect paycheck size. In short, the difference in salary levels between a star IT performer and a regular, reasonably talented professional can be hefty. As you’ll see on the following pages, those IT experts in the top 25 percent – the top quartile – command a far more robust paycheck than their average (but still highly competent) tech colleagues. For instance, the mean salary for all data warehouse managers in 2011 is $61, 452. Compare that to the salary for the data warehouse managers in the top quartile: $90,897. Or, take a look at managers of Internet systems. Their mean salary for 2011 is $79,671. In contrast, the “star” professionals in this position earn an impressive $114,051. Surveying the entire industry, the

average IT salary in 2011 (at mid-sized companies) is $77,873. Those pros in the top 25 percent bring home an average of $112,062. The fortunate top 25 percent are not only more skilled than the average IT pro. In many cases they have more aggressively sought higher paying positions by job-hopping on a regular basis. (Of course job-hopping has been far tougher as the job market has languished.) Additionally, these high wage earners typically started their career at a younger age, in a better first job, and had a more prestigious degree to propel them. Yet regardless of those factors, the real point is that IT salary levels are negotiable. As you peruse the following salary figures, realize that no matter what your current salary, you can boost it. With added experience, more skills – perhaps an IT certification – and some judicious job switching, your paycheck can rise accordingly. Good luck. How to Get the

I

TECH JOBS of THE FUTURE By Joseph Walker

t’s a brave new world. Many companies no longer store data on their own servers, using instead “cloud” service providers. Mobile device use is growing at an explosive pace. And these and other new technologies are presenting security challenges undreamt of just a few years ago. Here’s a rundown of the career potential and skills needed for success in cloud data, mobile and security technology.

Cloud and Data

The advent of cloud computing services has drastically lowered the barrier to entry for new tech companies to build and launch products. Friend.ly, a Mountain View, Calif., social networking company, doesn’t have to worry about renting space for its Web servers or need 24-hour IT professionals on call in case the servers crash. Amazon Web Services takes care of that for them -- until Amazon crashes, like it did in April. Though it didn’t affect Friend.ly, the incident brought down the Web sites of startups like Quora and Reddit. Eaton Hydraulics is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of a comprehensive line of reliable, high-efficiency hydraulic systems and components for use in mobile and industrial applications. Our goal at Eaton is to empower everyone to make a positive impact on their own careers, their businesses and their communities. If you’re ready to do something that matters, to do it well and to be encouraged and rewarded for doing it, then Eaton is the place for you. Small server crashes happen frequently says, Joachim De Lombaert, cofounder and CTO of Friend. ly. De Lombaert says he looks for engineers who are cognizant of the many ways that the cloud servers can fail and can create back-up plans. So if a particular feature of Friend.ly isn’t available because of a small server crash, the company has to be ready with an alternate Web page that will make it to seem to the user that nothing is wrong. Cloud computing is essentially the retrieval of data from multiple remote servers, also referred to as distributed systems. Retrieval isn’t hard when the amount of data is small, but as the number of users grows from 1,000 to 100,000 to 1 million, it’s increasingly complicated to retrieve data and deliver real time results to users. That’s why entrepreneurs like Dan Siroker, CEO of Optimizely, an A/B testing site, look for engineers with “big data” experience who are able to design products that anticipate and can handle mass volume from the get-go. “What that requires of engineers isn’t a specific language or syntax. It requires them to think about the problem and assume it’s going to be a billion first,” Siroker says. “Don’t get it working for a hundred, because as soon as the hundred turns into a thousand, you’re going to have a problem, and when the hundred million turns into a billion you have an even bigger problem.” Engineers who want to be able to distribute large amounts of data from mul-

January 2013 tiple servers should get accustomed to working with NoSQL databases and Hadoop software, Siroker says.

Mobile

Total spend on apps and services will be $54.6 billion by 2015, according to Forrester Research. Android, iOS, and BlackBerry developers are in high demand as companies beef up their mobile offerings. But not all developers are created equal. Follow-through is one distinction that Rand Arnold, director of software engineering for iOS at Peel Technologies, makes between candidates. It sounds like a trait that all employees should have, but it’s crucial in mobile development, Arnold says, because the distance between building an app prototype and one that works for users and is devoid of bugs is many miles. “I’ve had people who were great at coming up with an idea and expressing it, but just could never finish it by fixing all the little bugs,” he says. “They take it to the 80% point, but can never get the last 20% done, and the last 20% takes most of the time.” This is especially important in mobile because apps are static, that is, they can’t be updated instantaneously as problems arise. If there are bugs remaining in an app, they won’t be fixed for a minimum of weeks, because that’s how long it takes to get them approved and available at most app stores. Peel CEO Thiru Arunachalam says that really great Android developers are hard to come by, both because the platform hasn’t been available for as long as Apple’s iOS has, and also because Apple has many of the fancier features, like animation, built into its operating system. “On Android, you have to build it from scratch,” he says. Job postings looking for Android developers on tech-jobs website Dice.com increased by 302% over the last year, comparing the first quarter of 2011 with the first quarter of 2010; iPhone postings were up 220% in the same period. App developers have to think critically about what data to keep on the smartphone handset itself and what to put in the cloud. It’s a tradeoff, Arnold says, because the data -- say, video or photos -- that is stored in the cloud can’t be accessed as quickly. But if everything is stored on the handset, then the entire app will work slowly. “You have to figure out what to save and what to throw away,” Arnold says. “If you’re not careful, your app is going to be sluggish and slow, and no one’s going to use it.”

Security

The recent spate of security breaches everywhere from Sony to the International Monetary Fund has highlighted the vulnerability of personal and financial information on the Internet. Security experts say that the biggest areas for growth within cyber security are protecting mobile devices and the cloud servers that store vast amounts of data. Deep knowledge of the different mobile operating systems -- Android, iOS, Blackberry -- is a must for mobile security engineers, says Sanjay Beri, vice president and general manager at Juniper Networks. “You need to know what their architecture is, what their workflow is, how they perform updates, and the marketplace in which they live and get applications so you can understand the threat vectors and be proactive rather than reactive,” says Beri. Because mobile devices by their nature have only a limited amount of battery life, engineers have to develop software that can protect and patch threats efficiently and without draining the device’s battery. The choice is often between using a “signature” approach-which is a one-off patching of a security hole that consumes less energy -- and a “heuristic” approach, which is a more comprehensive scan of security threats based on threat patterns. Across all areas of security, dogged research is required to understand the evolving techniques that hackers use. The best way to do that is hack yourself--without causing harm. Security companies hire researchers with Ethical Hacker certification. Symantec, for example, in the course of research, recently found security holes in Facebook that gave advertisers access to users’ personal information. Security research candidates typically have experience with networking, machine learning, deep systems, and data analysis, said Joe Pasqua, vice president of research at Symantec. Cloud security requires expertise in network devices and Internet Protocol Suite, sometimes called TCP/IP. Engineers also need to understand the back-end applications that run cloud server infrastructure, like ISQL databases and JBoss Application Servers, Beri says. Another security challenge for cloud service providers is to prevent one customer from accessing another customer’s data, so engineers have to be conversant with Micosoft’s Active Directory, authentication and Security Assertion Markup Language (SML), Beri says. Take Small Steps:

S

It’s Your Way To A Better Future

mall steps are often overlooked in this speed crazy world where everything must be fast, needed now and the faster you achieve your goal the better. And you cannot really say slow is better and that some things take time in this age of speed. If you do, you are at risk being looked upon with scornful eyes. How you dare even suggest that, they say.

1. Small Steps, Not Giant Leaps

Well, I am here to tell you to take small, steady steps. I am sure you want success fast. The faster the better, right? As I get older, I am not really sure if there is a finish line. Because if there is a finish line, what then? I tend to see career or life as a series of marathons now. So, take little steps instead of one giant leap. There is no such thing as a giant leap to career success.

2. Distance Is A Series Of Small Steps

You must remember that distance can be covered by a series of small steps. It can also be covered by a flutter of fast paced sprints. But the difference is, if your finish line is finite - then well, you know the type of stamina you need in order to cover that distance. Do you? That is an important question. When I first started working, I did not know where I will be 17 years later. You may have a general idea but life takes you on many surprises. Do not be shocked this race you are participating in takes many forms and detours. I am in favor of small steps as it allows you to cover a greater distance while conserving energy and being able to enjoy the view at the same time!

3. Patience

Sure, easier said than done. Patience some say is an over rated virtue. I am not sure I agree. You need lots of patience on your journey to career success. And if you buy into the small steps philosophy then you will need even more patience. Things take time to reveal themselves to you. Especially good things that appear bad initially.

4. Keep Walking

GM Powertrain - 2995 River Road, Buffalo, NY 14207

General Motors is accelerating the pace of change, offering career possibilities from the highest tech...to the most advanced research and sciences...to breakthrough engineering and manufacturing...to industry-leading financial and business initiatives. We stand in support of equality for and advancement of all people based on their qualifications and actions alone without regard to color, gender, age, religion, national origin or disability.

So long as you keep walking, there is no stopping you from where you want to go. The image of Forest Gump running comes to mind. Of course that is an exaggerated example but do imagine, if you take small steps and do not stop, how far can you go in the span of time you have? People who think about sprinting do not know that you can run out of stamina before the finish line reveals itself. Worst of all, the finish line they imagine for themselves is actually a mirage. Then what?

5. It’s Ok To Detour

When you take little steps, it is ok to take a detour. Such is life and such is work too since work is a big part of life. So, it’s ok to explore a little. Make wrong decisions and learn from it. Most times, what we like, what we are good at, and our talent does not reveal itself when we do the safe thing. It rears it’s head when we least expect it. Aritlce provided by ezinearticles.com

Helping Others Travel Abroad: Careers in International Preparation

P

eople travel abroad for reasons as diverse as their destinations. Many travel to sightsee, some to work, and others to study. Some stay indefinitely. Behind a number of these trips, there are workers who help travelers overcome the challenges of going to a different country—such as learning about local customs and finding safe accommodations. As travel has become more affordable and the world grows increasingly interconnected, demand has risen for these international preparation workers. This article covers some career options in international preparation. The first section of the article describes some of the services international preparation workers provide and the occupations related to those services. The second section explains how to prepare for jobs in international preparation—and what to expect if you get one. Sources for more information are listed at the end of the article.

Jobs in international preparation International preparation workers are employed by private organizations, the federal government, and individual or group travelers. The type of services these workers offer varies by client need. For example, they may provide less language training and a more detailed itinerary to a corporate traveler on a quick business trip than they would to someone moving abroad to retire. International preparation workers provide services in three broad categories: culture, logistics, and health and safety. These workers help travelers before, during, and after a trip. Their services often run concurrently, and job duties may overlap.

Teaching culture Understanding a country’s culture can make travel easier and, for many people, more interesting. Short-term travelers usually do not need to learn more than the basics, but longterm travelers should understand the culture well. International preparation workers who specialize in culture instruction help travelers minimize misunderstandings and missteps. These workers include culture trainers and instructional coordinators Due to many factors—including language, history, and religion—people develop different attitudes, values, and beliefs that affect how they communicate and behave. For example, some cultures value timeliness, and some cultures communicate with body language more than others. “Culture trainers give people a vocabulary to explain these differences and how they came to be that way,” says Anne Copeland, who works as a culture trainer and directs a nonprofit research organization in Brookline, Massachusetts. Culture trainers work directly with travelers. The length of training varies by organization, from a few days to a few months. Class size also varies, from one traveler to small groups. Culture trainers tailor their lesson plans to fit the needs of a particular traveler or

group. For example, they may use a questionnaire to gauge how much the traveler knows about a culture. Culture trainers also consider the traveler’s destination. “I figure out what the challenges of traveling to a particular country might be,” says Copeland, “and ask someone who’s lived there for advice and guidance to make the material more relevant.” Classes usually begin with an overview of the destination country, including its history and geography. Culture trainers then explain the characteristics of the country’s culture, such as its social hierarchy. These workers also will compare the destination country’s culture to U.S. culture. In addition, culture trainers discuss how to manage cultural transition and any potential issues, such as culture shock and homesickness. Culture trainers may develop their own curriculum or teach a standardized one developed by the organization for which they work. Organizations that use a standardized curriculum often turn to instructional coordinators to help develop it. When designing a curriculum, culture trainers and instructional coordinators first research essential information about a country or region and then determine learning objectives to focus the material. Common sources for information include books, experts, and research papers. Instructional coordinators also provide training for culture trainers. Coordinators may teach about how to prepare lesson plans, use effective teaching methods, and evaluate performance. Some instructional coordinators cover other topics, too, such as recordkeeping and leadership skills. “My goal is to introduce the staff to the tools they will need to do their jobs,” says Jennifer Albee, who trains overseas staff for the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C. To teach, both culture trainers and instruc-

tional coordinators use adult learning techniques. These techniques encourage participation through interactive activities, such as case studies, simulations, and discussions. In an effort to help people retain information, culture trainers and instructional coordinators try to establish connections between the material and how to use it. For example, Copeland might ask travelers to talk about a frustrating situation that has occurred in a multicultural setting, to discuss the cultural differences involved, and to find ways to improve communication. “It’s crucial to make the material relevant to their lives and work,” Albee says.

Handling Logistics

Every trip has logistical details, such as booking flights and finding places to stay. Some travelers have the time to take care of these issues themselves, but busier travelers and organizations often opt to hire help. Logistics workers organize itineraries, coordinate travel, and plan orientation events. These workers have job titles such as operations managers, training specialists, and logistics coordinators. The most time-consuming part of logistics work is scheduling. Some schedules may take as long as 6 months to complete. To schedule a trip, operations managers often coordinate with travelers, logistics workers, and other departments to find suitable dates and destinations. “Scheduling is a huge logistical challenge,” says Zach Hickman, who oversees the language division at the Air Force Culture and Learning Center in Montgomery, Alabama. “We have to work around people’s schedules, find programs abroad that fit their needs, and get approval from their supervisors.” Many logistics departments are small and have limited budgets, which creates additional challenges. “There are about

950 participants in our language program, but only three of us,” Hickman says. To cope, operations managers in logistics departments often set up self-serve systems that allow travelers to do part of the work. For example, travelers may book their own flights or download the forms to apply for a visa or security clearance. Contractors may also help logistics departments with some duties. Operations managers also may help the logistics department use its resources more efficiently. For example, to ensure that participants remain for the duration of their placements, operations managers may require culture training or testing of foreign language skills. “We are making a large investment in each of our participants,” says Hickman,“so we have to make sure that they are viable assets and that we send them where they stand to gain the most.” To help travelers prepare for their trips, logistics departments often hold orientation events. During these events, training specialists introduce travelers to their organization’s travel policies, discuss travel concerns, and handle administrative details. Training specialists also encourage the group to get to know each other. “Orientation events are logistically valuable because we can bring people together to one place, deal with their required documentations and forms all at once, and send them out as a more cohesive group,” says Emily Harrington, who hosts orientation events for the Peace Corps. When preparing for orientation, training specialists review the curriculum and concerns that travelers might have about a particular destination. Specialists also update the curriculum to reflect changes in the length of orientation events or in the organization’s policies. To ensure that there is someone available to host an event, training specialists also train other staff members. “Peace Corps hosts about 100 events with around 3,500 participants every year,” Harrington says. “I can’t do them all alone.”

At large organizations, health and safety managers plan, direct, and oversee the health and safety of travelers by designing emergency procedures and providing travel recommendations. “It’s important that our travelers know who to call in case something happens,” says William Bunn, who oversees health, safety, and security for an international manufacturing and marketing company based in Lisle, Illinois. “We have local emergency contacts, and I’m always on call.” These managers design health and safety procedures that adapt to the needs of travelers and their destinations. “We have to consider all medical and safety issues—such as a disability—that might preclude a traveler from going to certain countries,” says Bunn. To establish procedures, health and safety managers use information from a variety of government sources, such as continued on page 18

Ensuring Health and Safety

Every country has health and safety concerns. Travelers who visit developed countries find health facilities and safety concerns that are similar to those in the United States. But people who travel to developing countries can face more serious health and safety risks, such as poor sanitation, lack of medicine, and unwanted attention. When health and safety risks are great, travelers may need professional assistance. International preparation workers who specialize in health and safety provide a variety of services, including dispensing vaccines, conducting physical exams, and developing guidelines for workplace health and safety standards. Among the international preparation workers in the health and safety field are managers, occupational health and safety instructors, travel physicians, and medical records technicians. This section describes the work of managers and instructors who focus on health and safety issues for travelers abroad.

Cultural Awareness in The Military

M

embers of the military deployed to other countries face unique cultural challenges. As representatives of the United States, not only do they need to show cultural awareness of another country, but they should convey a tone of respect to ease tensions, improve communication, and avoid missteps. To prepare its members, the military emphasizes culture and language training. For example, the U.S. Air Force hands out field guides to introduce airmen to their destination’s culture, offers language and culture classes, and brings in speakers familiar with working with local people. “We care a lot about understanding and bridging cultural differences, because it allows us to build positive relationships,” says Paul Firman, a program developer at the Air Force Culture and Language Center

in Montgomery, Alabama. Cultural awareness is particularly important because it helps to avoid misunderstandings and to rectify misunderstandings that have developed into animosity. For example, Afghan culture doesn’t share the U.S. concept of personal space. Community members may want to touch you or hold your hand while speaking. “The way in which you react sends a message,” says Firman. “If you lean away, you are saying, ‘I don’t value you.’ You might never know you insulted them, unless you understand their culture first.” Cultural awareness also improves negotiations and engenders good will— for the benefit of all parties. “By putting in the effort to learn about them,” says Firman, “we can change their perception of us, become friends, and open up room for forgiveness and understanding.”

Most corporate health and safety managers also use a database that recommends—by city and country—health and safety precautions, medical facilities, and doctors. To ensure that recommendations stay accurate, health and safety managers update their procedures and audit worksites overseas each year. Health and safety managers make certain that travelers follow health and safety recommendations before departing. These may include updating immunizations and submitting emergency contact information. These workers may also provide travelers with a guidebook and suggest instruction that travelers can take to learn ways to combat common health problems, such as jet lag and illness. Health and safety managers also alert travelers to other recommendations and requirements for arrival in their destination country. “We look at housing, transportation, and safety to brief travelers on best safety practices for that country,” Bunn says. “If there are transit issues, for example, we might require that they hire a driver or take public transportation.” Health and safety managers travel frequently to keep up with changing regulations around the world and to inspect worksites and housing for safety. They also may need to travel abroad to lead an evacuation. Some people travel to become employers or employees in another country. Occupational health and safety instructors train them and other workers to comply with regulations on safety, health, and the environment. These instructors develop training materials, hold workshops, and ensure that workers know how to do their jobs safely. Health and safety instructors also promote crosscultural understanding in multicultural workplaces. “Safety is all about people,” says Tomas Schwabe, who works as a bilingual instructor for OSHA in Salem,

Oregon. “Most injuries occur because of unsafe behavior that results from lack of communication.” These instructors usually give workshops and presentations to employers, usually at a training site. Occasionally, they may travel to a worksite to give customized evaluations of safety knowledge and procedures, help employees understand the health and safety regulations, and teach employers to communicate better about safety procedures. “The workshops empower employers and employees,” Schwabe says. “They recognize that they have the ability to reduce or eliminate hazards in the workplace.”

Bunn agrees: “Working globally around hundreds of perspectives is very intellectually stimulating.” Some workers have the opportunity to travel and visit many cities, either abroad or domestically or both, at their employer’s expense. Training specialists travel to different U.S. cities to host orientation events, for example, and health and safety managers travel abroad to inspect worksites. The opportunity to travel abroad also provides workers with a chance to practice their foreign language skills. International preparation workers enjoy the diversity of their work. Many work in small offices or alone, which allows them to solve problems creatively, take on challenging tasks, and learn new skills. epending on whom you ask, the title of “electrical contractor” has different meanings. Generally, most people say an electrical contractor installs power distribution systems and lighting fixtures in a building. If we lived in the 1930s, you would be close to accurate. Technological advances have changed the role of the electrical contractor. Like the extended hand, the electrical contractor now installs systems for power, control, communications, security and safety. Plus, the electrical contractor is tasked with the challenge of integrating these systems to automate the structure and maximize the functionality of the combined systems.

We’re looking for people who share our passion for technology, innovation and hard work. As a member of the Concurrent team you will be shaping the future in a career that is challenging and inspiring.

Page 21

This article is a quick view of the migration toward the information technology methodology that has greatly expanded the role of the electrical contractor in today’s building requirements. The EC is a communications contractor for voice, data and video Wired for communications & wireless (low voltage). The communications industry has challenged the electrical contractor to tackle the information technology (IT) requirements for networks supported by low voltage and fiber optic cabling. Many local area networks (LANs) have been upgraded to handle the increased transmission speeds and the exploding demand for

Due to the rapid growth rate of technology in the past few years, most computer technicians you speak with will tell you that CPU speeds double each year. additional bandwidth. Many experts forecast a need to upgrade the LANs to fiber optic backbones in order to meet future speeds and volume of traffic. While the high voltage distribution systems remain relatively stable, the low voltage picture is showing strong signs that we may see a rewiring America in the next decade. Moore’s Law supports this projection. Moore’s Law is a computing term that originated around 1970; the simplified version of this law states that processor speeds or overall processing power for computers will double every two years. A quick check among technicians among several computer companies shows that the term is not very popular, but the rule is still accepted. To break down the law even further, it specifically states that the number of transistors on an affordable central processing unit (CPU) would double every two years. If you were to look at processor speeds from the 1970s to 2009 and then again in 2010, you may think the law has reached its limit or is nearing the limit. In the 1970s processor speeds ranged from 740 kilohertz (kHz) to 8 megahertz (MHz). From 2000–2009, there has not really been much of a speed difference as the speeds range from 1.3 gigahertz (GHz) to 2.8 GHz, which suggests the speeds have doubled within a 10-year span, not the 2-year span Moore’s Law suggests. However, we are looking at the speeds and not the number of transistors. In 2000, the number of transistors in the CPU numbered 37.5 million, while in 2009 the number went up to an outstanding 904 million. This is why it is more accurate to apply the law to transistors than to speed. With all this talk of transistors, the average technician or computer user may not understand what the figures mean. A simpler way to explain is that the earlier CPUs on the market had a single speed or frequency rating while the newer models have a rating that refers to more than one CPU. If you’ve purchased a computer recently, you might have an idea of what this means as salespersons may have

January 2013 sold you on the wonders of multicore CPUs. In the above example, the speeds over a large number of years went between 1.3 and 2.8, which is barely double, but it’s relevant to note that the 2.8 GHz processor is a quad core, while the 1.3 GHz processor is a single core. This means the actual power of the 2.8 GHz processor would be found if you multiply by four, which gives you a whopping 11.2 GHz. Due to the rapid growth rate of technology in the past few years, most computer technicians you speak with— whether they have heard of Moore’s Law or no—will tell you that CPU speeds double each year. Though Moore’s Law had said every two years, this rapid increase in technological production has lessened the period in the minds of technicians and users alike. Smart Building Systems

There are so many names for the science of automating buildings. “Environmental control” may best describe what the electrical contractor is doing. When electrical contractors are installing systems for controlling building temperature; heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; lighting; life safety/fire; security; etc., they are controlling their customers’ environment. Now, electrical contractors are in the environmental control industry. Since, historically, the industry has segmented itself, we will keep the individual headings for now, but one of the goals of electrical contractors is to have all

players at least acknowledge that they are in the same industry. • Environmental control—includes all traditional building controls • Lighting control—the integration of automatic lighting control for buildings • Sensors, actuators and end devices— including adjustable speed drives, chillers, complete packaged air conditioning • Fire and life safety—integration with the integrated building systems (IBS) or smart buildings • Security—integration for the tenants of the IBS • Elevators—integration for the tenants of the IBS The electrical contractors (a.k.a., control contractors) of the world bring life to all automation designs and new control concepts. The electrical contractor to the rescue again.

The Electrical Contractor as Security Contractor for Access Control and Video Surveillance

With the growing need for improved security and the simultaneous shrinking of budgets, many building owners are turning to the electrical contractor for upgrades to their security systems. While video surveillance does not replace a live security force, it permits around-the-clock coverage over a much larger area. Many businesses

report that the video surveillance system is a strong deterrent to crime and employee theft in their facilities. Specialty security contractors once dominated this area of services. However, as systems began to integrate, the electrical contractor became the preferred contractor. Security and safety are too important to ignore.

The Electrical Contractor as Disaster Recovery Contractor for Power, Control, Communications, Security and Safety

The national weather service just released its forecast for the upcoming hurricane season. The concept of dealing with a disaster and recovery is at the top of the list for the astute planner. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan as well as the recent outbreak of deadly tornados are fresh in our minds as we think what we would do. Many planners have already contacted their preferred electrical contractor with a request to survey their facilities and develop an emergency plan. A business without power or communications is not an option. Clearly, the growing role of the electrical contractor remains strong in a weak economy. The electrical contractor wears many hats as it serves our needs for today and into the future. CAREER SUCCESS:

The Top 4 Critical Success Factors By Peter Fisher

There are many critical success factors to determine your career success, but these are the top four with the most important being your attitude. Have you got the right attitude to ensure career success? With the right attitude you will not only know what you want to do; where your career is going and when, but just as importantly you will be prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure your career success. Know your market worth and at the appropriate times discuss precisely what you have to offer in very specific terms. Do you know how to do this? The most common failure amongst interview candidates is to believe that their track record “speaks for itself”. But, when you have got that

Important Cover Letter Tips by Teena Rose

Cover Letter Tip #1: Always include a cover letter.

that you aren’t quite professional enough to meet the company’s needs.

Cover Letter Tip #2: Cover letters are a snapshot of you as a potential employee.

A resume by itself has limitations, telling the employer little about your professional interests and qualifications. A cover letter helps you highlight specific aspects of your experience that qualify you for the position. Consider this: If an employer has a large number of applicants to review, he or she may take only 20 seconds to look over each letter. By knowing what is useful to the employer and calling attention to that in your cover letter, you help him or her quickly answer the question, “Why should I hire this person?”

Even if it isn’t stated specifically in an ad or mentioned in conversation, an employer likely wishes to see a cover letter accompanying your resume. Few employers will take a serious look at a candidate who doesn’t write one. Think of the cover letter as your chance to sell yourself. A resume is a fairly generic listing of what you’ve done, but the cover letter lets you tailor your skills and abilities to the specific job. That and your resume are all an employer uses to decide whether to move you along in the employment process.

Cover Letter Tip #3: A cover letter sets you apart from the other applicants.

Cover Letter Tip #5: Cover leters should be actual letters.

with each paragraph consisting of maybe three or four sentences. It is always typed, never handwritten. Keep in mind, too, that “less is more.” Your letter should never be more than one page in length. Write clearly and concisely, and stay focused in each paragraph.

Cover Letter Tip #6: Don’t tell your life history or repeat your resume.

A cover letter is nothing more than a sales tool designed to pique an employer’s interest in you. Focus on the parts of your resume that are relevant to the position – the qualifications that best help an employer decide why you should be hired for the job. Including irrelevant information, even if you think it makes you seem more impressive, wastes valuable space. If you’ve written an effective cover letter, the employer will want to take more time to read through your resume and learn about the things you left out.

job – you’ll have time to do that in the interview. If there is a gap in your employment history, give a brief explanation of the reason so that the employer isn’t left wondering; again, you can elaborate in the interview. No matter what your current job status, though, don’t come across as desperate. Be enthusiastic about why you want this job and why you are the perfect fit for the employer.

Cover Letter Tip #8: Humor has no place in cover letters.

Leave humor out of the cover letter, even if you’re applying to be a stand-up comic. Many people think that relating a funny anecdote or turning a humorous phrase will help show off their personality, but these attempts will likely fail. You have no idea whether the employer shares your sense of humor, and what you think is funny may be offensive to someone else. January 2013 Cover Letter Tip #9: Creativity doesn’t earn extra points with the employer.

Unless the job is totally based on creativity – and even then, be cautious – don’t monkey around with the basic cover letter. Using stick figures to illustrate your previous jobs or decorating your cover letter with graphics may seem like it will set your letter apart from all the other applicants, but it usually ends up looking unprofessional. Most employers will tell you that a basic, well-crafted letter is much more impressive than a “creative” one. Don’t let anything distract the employer from the skills and qualifications that will help you get hired.

Cover Letter Tip #10: Gimmicks hurt, not help, your cover letter.

Some applicants are inspired to create new and different cover “letters” –printing it on a full-size picture of themselves, for example, or videotaping their letter, or creating a computer presentation complete with graphics and music. Gimmicks like these can easily backfire and go right into the trash can. Most employers want to hire people who are professional in their business dealings and who can communicate well. Nothing highlights this more than a well-written cover letter. Make your best impression on the employer immediately by using a traditional, formal, printed cover letter and resume.

Cover Letter Tip #11: Don’t make demands.

What’s the pay-off from a diverse workforce? At Durham Regional Hospital, we believe it’s an infusion of energy and ideas that come together to create the best possible environment. Your cover letter should show what you can do for the employer, not what he or she can do for you. Making demands can put the employer on the defensive. If you are not able to work Wednesday evenings or need time off to take care of an elderly parent, don’t mention it in the cover letter. Those kinds of preferences can be discussed further in the job interview. When an employer is enthusiastic about your skills and qualifications, he or she is more likely to work with you to meet any reasonable needs you might have. Some occupations do not require any occupation-specific onthe-job training. Professional occupations, which usually have educational requirements, are especially likely to have this assignment. For example, geographers and pharmacists can perform their work competently without getting any additional training on the job.

Developing the New System

When BLS was developing the new education and training system, its goal was to provide a more complete summary of how a worker enters and becomes competent in an occupation. For some occupations, the most common path to entry involves a combination of education and training, such as a high school diploma and an apprenticeship. The new system allows an occupation to be assigned to multiple categories— unlike the previous system, which allowed assignment to just one. But no classification system is perfect. Because many occupations have multiple paths to entry, assigning only the most common path in each category necessarily leaves out other, often important, ways that people enter occupations. In the education category, for example, registered nurses have the assignment of associate’s degree because it is the most common education for entry-level registered

Page 34

equal opportunity employment journal

nurses; however, some registered nurses enter the occupation with a higher degree, such as a bachelor’s. Development process. The process of developing a new education and training system began with a team of BLS economists who met to discuss possible alternatives to the previously existing categories. The team also considered input from reviewers outside BLS, including comments received from Federal Register notices in 2008 and 2010. After much discussion, the team developed a system involving three categories of education and training as previously described: • Typical education needed for entry • Work experience in a related occupation • Typical on-the-job training needed to attain competency. Each of these categories would offer multiple assignments. The additional information should be even more helpful to career seekers, educa-

tors, and others interested in occupational entry requirements. Education and training resources. Assigning education and training categories involved considerable effort: BLS provides information on about 750 occupations. To make category assignments for each occupation, BLS economists researched and analyzed a variety of information. Two sources of data important for the analyses were the American Community Survey and the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). The American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, is a household survey that measures the educational attainment of people currently in an occupation. Economists used information from this survey to look at workers’ educational attainment for three groups—18 to 29 years old, 30 years and older, and all workers in an occupation. They compared the distribution of educational attainment among workers in an occupation, mindful that educational attainment differs from educational requirements. These comparisons helped economists get a glimpse into whether an occupation might have multiple paths to entry. The surveys conducted for O*NET asked workers and occupational experts questions related to education, work experience, and training. These O*NET surveys are produced by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. After considering all of their research, economists determined category assignments for each occupation. In cases with more than one path to entry within an occupation, economists assigned the education, experience, or training

January 2013

categories that best described the path that most workers need to enter or gain competency in the occupation.

For More Information

To learn more about the new system, see “Education and Training Classification System Update—Final System” online at www.bls.gov/ emp/ep_finaledtrain.htm. The page includes links to the Federal Register notices, answers to frequently asked questions, and system codes representing the new assignments. As mentioned previously, education and training requirements vary significantly from one job to another, even within an occupation. And some occupations require licensure, which is not covered in these categories or assignments. State-specific requirements, such as licensure, can be obtained by contacting state licensing boards. In addition, the 2012–13 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), available in spring 2012, will include licensure information along with discussions of the education and training assignments. The current OOH provides information about the many paths to entry that an occupation might have. Read the OOH online at www.bls. gov/ooh, or look for it in your local library or career center. The new education and training category assignments will be published in a table in fall 2011 and as a searchable database with additional tables in winter 2012. 3 Habits of Effective Project Leadership & 6 Keys to Successful Project-Based Work

January 2013

by Ty Kiesel

Three Habits of Effective Project Leadership

For any organization doing project based work, the need for leadership and collaboration is critical. Unfortunately, for many organizations, developing leadership is a challenge—there are never enough leaders in an organization and getting people to collaborate is often a challenge. Here are three leadership principles that can help you effectively manage project teams in today’s complicated business climate: 1. Lead Yourself First. My colleagues and I used to call this walking the talk. If you don’t practice what you preach, how can you lead others. 2. Encourage Ownership. The more people feel of sense of ownership, the more responsibility team members will feel for the outcome. Identifying what a positive or negative outcome means to the team will encourage a sense of ownership. 3. Follow-Up. I don’t think it’s any secret, but leaders get the behaviors they reinforce. It really doesn’t matter what type of project based work you do or your particular work management methodology, project managers who spend time learning and implementing leadership skills are more successful than those that don’t. As more and more organization turn to project and portfolio management best practices to make their organizations more efficient, the need for skilled project managers—those who know how to lead people as well as manage process—will continue to grow. What are you doing to improve your leadership skills?

Six Keys to Successful Project-Based Work

“Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breath in through nose, out the mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don’t forget to breathe, very important.” In the 1984 movie The Karate Kid, Mr. Miagi, an apartment complex maintenance man, becomes an unlikely karate teacher for Daniel Laruso, a high-school kid in trouble with a bunch of local karate-bullies. With an unorthodox teaching style, Daniel-san’s first karate lessons includes waxing Mr. Miagi’s cars—all four of them. So what does this have to do with project based work? Without giving a play-by-play of the whole story, Mr. Miagi taught Daniel the basic techniques and skills that would allow him to defend himself. I’ve observed that there are some basic project management fundamentals that are common to any successful project and portfolio management methodology. Successful project managers focus on what matters most. Here are six suggestions: 1. Make sure the project has a strong sponsor. Every project needs a sponsor who will evangelize the value of the initiative throughout the life of the project. 2. Make sure the project is adequately funded. The temptation is to take whatever funding is offered, but without adequate funding—it’s usually the project manager who ends up in hot water when the project fails for lack of financial resources. 3. Pick the right team. Make sure the team includes all the skills that will be needed for success. Just because someone is available, doesn’t always mean they are the best to work on your project. 4. Plan. Planning is more than just preparing to deliver the final product. It should involve a continual process of evaluation and adjustment. 5. Know the end before you begin. Make sure you know what the outcome of a successful project is before you start. What does “done” mean? Financial experts call this an “exit plan.” 6. Prepare for change. The very nature of projects create change. Whether it’s a new product or an improvement in process or technology. Makes sure to prepare for the change. Emerging Trends In Nursing Jobs By Bill Sterzenbach

T

he nursing profession has witnessed tremendous changes in the last five decades. In this continually changing environment, it is important to study the trends in nursing jobs in order to determine a successful career path. Today the demand for Registered Nurses or RNs has increased considerably, because of two factors. Firstly, relatively less fresh enrolment down the years since the turn of the century along with retirements of extant RNs has led to a shortage of trained nurses. Secondly, there is an increase in a nurse’s range of function, with rise in the number of the elderly due to improved healthcare systems and the introduction of community-based preventive projects. According to the Federal Bureau of Health professions, “In 2000, the National supply of FTE registered nurses was estimated at 1.89 million, while the demand was projected at 2 million, a shortage of 110,000, or 6 percent. Based on what is known about trends in the supply of RNs and their anticipated demand, the shortage is expected to grow relatively slowly until

2010, by which time it will have reached 12 percent”. (Source http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/ healthworkforce/reports/rnproject/report. htm) It is clearly a time for those interested in healthcare professions to join nursing, and those already working as qualified nurses to consider specialization. Pay hikes in the nursing industry in recent years are a good incentive, though the number of nurses existing is still short of that in demand. Some of the trends in the area of nursing jobs well worth considering can be both well paid and challenging. Becoming a traveling nurse has long been a popular option since some agencies began to work with traveling nurses in order to cater for temporary shortfalls in certain areas. It can combine the advantages of traveling free of cost to see a new place while enjoying free housing and other benefits. This also provides the opportunity to add a premier hospital to one’s resume. Staff nursing at Magnet hospitals is also a good option. They involve their nurses in decisions affecting the patient and the

In an era of technological advancements, increasing opportunities in healthcare professions and better incentives than ever before. work environment and allow participation in shared governance structures. In the aftermath of a natural disaster like Katrina, the most immediately perceived need was for someone to be able to combine clinical skills with information technology. The need for electronic medical records was emphasized in the wake of the devastation left behind by the hurricane. This is the purview of the nurse informatics who can find a niche in various areas including corporations that hire them for positions in R&D and sales, as they are able to demonstrate products to the customers. They can branch into teaching and training positions in the academia, or as systems analysts, or information officers in hospitals. There is also a surging demand for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs), who provide care in critical situations, where the patients have advanced, acute or chronic problems. They are usually found in Intensive Care Units(ICUs), but also work in various other areas including pediatrics, psychiatry or anesthetics. They obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, and even plan and direct treatments and investigations. Another option for the ACNPs can be in the area of genetic nursing. The mapping of the human genome means that the importance of genes and genetics in certain

medical conditions cannot be ignored, and there is a need for trained nurses to simplify the geneticists’ prognosis and interpret test results for the patients and their families. Such nurses work in regional genetics networks, specialty genetic labs, and help in education, counseling, and testing. Modern medicine requires special implants and insertions in the patient’s body for a long-term venous access, especially in the case of chemotherapy or antibiotic therapies. The infusion nurses do this successfully and are usually on call in various hospitals. End-of-life nursing is another trend that has renewed interest in hospice and palliative care, and is likely to be increasingly on demand in an aging population and a national consciousness towards dignifying the death experience. Also in a post 9/11 world where the threat of bio-terrorism looms large, nursing in Public Health is seeing increased investments. In an era of technological advancements, increasing opportunities in healthcare professions and better incentives than ever before, the nursing practice is sure to become more popular, and meet increasing demands for care, comfort, knowledge and support. Be Productive: Start Your Day Early

W

ant to be productive at work? Then start your day early. You are probably thinking, “I do not have enough rest, how can I afford to wake up early?” I had the same thoughts before. After a while you will realize you cannot be productive unless you rise early. Time is finite. Each of us has only 24 hours. Each of us has finite energy. How well you balance both will be how productive you can be, at work or at home. I have 3 young kids and my own business to run. Trying to balance how much work I put into my business, how much time I spend with my family and yet have time

for my hobbies is all about how I can be productive with my time. You want to be productive at work or at home? Here’s what you should do.

1. Cut Off Television

I used to tell myself, I need the break. So, when the kids sleep I turn on the cable and watch whatever programs that catches my fancy. Often, I find myself not watching, just channel surfing. And I don’t end up watching a full program. I decided one day to just give up on TV as it makes me sleep late and wake up tired. If you want to be productive, cut off TV. You are better off reading a book. Without

TV, I have managed to finish many books which I have bought but never read.

2. Know Your Priorities

Really, it is all about the choice you make and the priorities you have. If you know it is competitive out there in the corporate world, how can you be a better worker than the person who is also aiming for the position above you? How can you do more whether to impress or to get the relevant person’s attention?

3. Is It Always Fun, Fun, Fun?

People who oppose to rising early typically have these excuses. I need personal time. I need to catch up with my friends, I need to know what is going on in the world. But really, most of these are just excuses for having some fun. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I am not saying giving it up. I am saying, there is a proper time in place for everything. Each activity has a price tag on it. Do one and you can’t do the other. The choice is yours. Whether it is catching up with friends till late night or falling behind in your work.

4. Rest Early, Rise Early

You want to be productive? Rise early, read more books, have more energy, be more focused and set standards for others to catch up. It’s as simple as that. Article provided by ezinearticles.com

What Material Recording Clerks Do

M

aterial recording clerks keep track of information to keep businesses and supply chains on schedule. They ensure proper scheduling, recordkeeping, and inventory control.

Duties

Material recording clerks typically do the following: • Keep records of items shipped, received, or transferred to another location • Compile reports on various aspects of changes in production or inventory • Find, sort, or move goods between different parts of the business • Check records for accuracy As warehouses increase their use of automation and computers, clerks will become more adept at using technology. Many clerks use tablets or hand-held computers to keep track of inventory. New sensors and tags enable these computers to automatically detect when and where products are moved, making clerks’ jobs more efficient. Production, planning, and expediting clerks ease the flow of information, work, and

materials within or among offices in a business. They compile reports on the progress of work and on any production problems that arise. These clerks set workers’ schedules, estimate costs, keep track of materials, and write special orders for new materials. Expediting clerks are in contact with vendors to ensure that supplies and equipment are shipped on time. They also may inspect the quality of products.

Shipping, receiving, and traffic clerks keep track of and record all outgoing and incoming shipments and ensure that they have been filled correctly. Many of these clerks scan barcodes with hand-held devices or use radiofrequency identification (RFID) scanners to keep track of inventory. They also compute freight costs and prepare invoices for other parts of the organization. Some of these clerks move goods from the warehouse to the loading dock. Stock clerks and order fillers receive, unpack, and track merchandise. They retrieve customer orders and transport products from a warehouse to shelves in stores. They keep a record of all items that enter or leave the stockroom and inspect for damaged goods. These clerks also use hand-held scanners to keep track of merchandise. Material and product inspectors weigh, measure, check sample, and keep accurate records Michigan Department of Community Health Center for Forensic Psychiatry 8303 Platt Road — PO Box 2060 — Ann Arbor, MI 48106

To make a positive and lasting impression at a job interview, you have to be prepared. The interview is where an employer will decide if you will be an asset to the company. Knowing the proper way to conduct yourself is a key factor to achieving a successful interview. You need to be familiar with the interview jargon. The following is a list of language tools you should be well versed in before attending a job interview.

Workplace Diversity: The Hispanic Experience

ational Hispanic Heritage Month is From September 15 through October 15. I can think of no better time to look at the issue of workplace diversity. According to 2010 Census data, fifty million Hispanics account for 16 percent of America’s population. The total minority population, of which Hispanics are the majority, comes to 36.3 percent. There can be no question that there has been and will continue to be a shifting consumer marketplace and national workforce. This also means we are becoming an increasingly diverse nation. For American businesses, diversity in the workplace has become part of mission statements, business strategies, hiring policies, and community outreach. According to HispanTelligence, the research arm of Hispanic Business, Inc., the purchasing power of Hispanics alone was put at $1 trillion in 2010, and is expected to increase to $1.3 trillion by 2015. Each September since 2005, HispanicBusiness magazine signals out the best companies for their diversity policies with respect to the Hispanic community. Here is the list for 2011. 1. AT&T 2. Verizon Communications 3. Pacific Gas & Electric 4. Southern California Edison 5. Comerica Bank

6. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. 7. Bank of America 8. McDonald’s Corp. 9. Union Bank 10. Marriott International Inc. It’s nice to see so many familiar names on the list. AT&T’s policy is to “lead from the top and embed diversity and inclusion” into the fabric of the business. AT&T placed in the top half of corporations for diversity retention and promotion; 16 percent of AT&T’s new hires last year were Hispanic. Perhaps not surprisingly, once a company gets its foot in the door in a specific community, young people tend to gravitate to job opportunities at those companies. To make the most of their minority recruiting efforts, the most successful employers use a variety of methods and diligently work to promote these initiatives on college campuses. Many employers are reaching out to Hispanic students by sponsoring career fairs and other events on campus, attending recruiting events and even offering scholarships to Hispanic students. Companies are also connecting with students through professional societies such as the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting. Students should be searching the Internet job boards, both the big ones as well as

niche boards that match either their career functions, locations or diversity. LatPro, for example, is a niche diversity job board for Hispanic and bilingual professionals. Despite promising advances in many areas, Hispanics continue to be underrepresented in a variety of professions. The fields employers mention the most include science, information technology, engineering and healthcare (especially nurses and physicians with Spanish language skills). The reasons are varied and complex, but multicultural students are simply not entering these fields in great enough numbers. Hispanic businesses should encourage students to pursue these fields by increasing scholarships to ease the financial burden of advanced education, as well as promoting mentorship opportunities to expose young Latinos/Latinas to these career options early on. Many employers want to see that students are involved in organizations related to their profession, especially those focused on supporting Hispanic professionals within a specific field. For example, accounting students and graduates should consider joining the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA). Other organizations include Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), and the National Society for Hispanic Professionals (NSHP). These organizations are an excellent source for networking opportunities and job leads. An online listing can be found at www.latpro.com/cms/about/about_us/network. Another source of networking opportunities is the Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. By using multiple strategies, employers can better inform Hispanic students about their corporate diversity initiatives and how their organization values a diverse workforce. Efforts should include employee referral programs, affinity organizations within the company, sponsoring scholarships for Hispanic students, advertising on diversity job boards like LatPro.com, and supporting Hispanic professional organizations within their field. Recruiting Hispanic students and employees to a company requires that the employer understand the benefit that a diverse workforce brings to the business bottom line. Minority candidates want to know that they are being recruited for their skills and the value they will bring to an
