very year I am amazed at how quickly the months fly by and we end up back at January. As this happens over and over again, I have found that the beginning of the year is a great time to look back at the choices I’ve made and the outcomes they’ve created, as well as look forward to the goals I want to achieve. As I find myself getting older, (and hopefully wiser) I feel like I’ve learned a few things along the way about setting goals. I’ve been working on a new project for a while now. I expected this new project to take about a year to complete. There have been several steps involved, but with each step forward, I felt like I was pushed two steps backward. All told, I’ve spent about three years on this project and even though every day it is closer to completion, it is still not finished. What has kept me motivated up to this point is completing the goal. I set a goal and mean to achieve it. Ultimately, even if the project is not as successful as I hope it to be, it’s the follow-through that makes me the most proud. Ideas are a dime a dozen. It’s the follow through that puts you on a higher level. If you’ve spent the past year wondering where it went and what you have to show for it, vow not to let that happen in the future. Figure out what goals you’d like achieve that would make this year (or the next two or three!) successful for you. By making a plan with small steps and continuing to move forward, those goals can be met. Even if it takes longer than you expect it to. Lisa Petty, Editor Equal Opportunity Employment Journal

8 Habits of Highly Successful Networkers
I
by Rohit Raut
n today’s day and age, mere skill isn’t enough to ensure career advancement. Knowing the right people can get you an incredible edge when it comes to finding the right job or business opportunity. In addition, building a great network for yourself involves much more than flattery. The internet has created several avenues for building networks that simply weren’t available before. In an increasingly competitive world, knowing how to connect with the right people is crucial to achieving your professional goals. Let us take a look at some of the things that successful networkers do.
1. A lways think about what you can do for the other person first.
This is one of the most common mistakes people make when they are trying to build their own network. Before you establish any kind of professional relationship, you need to make the other person understand how they can benefit from knowing you. This benefit need not be anything extravagant. You can just introduce the other person to someone whom you know that shares their interests, or just forward a relevant article to them over email. If you’re asking for a favor right off the bat, the other person has no reason to help you. Wait until you’ve established a good relationship before asking them to do something for you.
Instead of trying to build a database of thousands of contacts, focus on building strong relationships with a select group of people. Approach every networking opportunity objectively.
2. Ask to be introduced by a third-party.
Most serious professionals have profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter. If you want to be introduced to this person, do a little digging and find someone who knows them directly. It could be someone who works for the same company, or just a friend of the person in question. Once you’ve found a contact that meets the above criteria, introduce yourself to them by explaining why you want to meet the person you want to network with. You could talk to them about your plans for a mutually beneficial partnership, or simply express your appreciation for the work they do. Once you’ve done this, you should ask this person to introduce the two of you. The introduction could be made at an upcoming company event, or you could just set up a lunch meeting. Being introduced to someone by a third-party that they already know and trust lends you a tremendous amount of credibility.

3. Don’t try to be a collector.
The Wisdom of Dale Carnegie in Five Bullet Points
5. Find out what your contact likes.
You can tell a lot about a person from the way their online profile is set up. If you’re looking to build a professional relationship with someone, do a quick Google search for their name. Look at the results that pop up to see if they’ve been involved in any social work or charitable organizations. If they have a profile on LinkedIn or Facebook, see if you can determine what they are interested in. if they are sharing articles or posting messages that are centered around a general theme, you can use this knowledge in your interactions. When you approach this person, mention some things about their topic of interest, and let them know if there is anything you can do to help.
6. Broaden your horizons.
Your network doesn’t need to consist solely of individuals from your specific line of work. Networking with people from different spheres of the professional world can open up a wealth of new possibilities. You can meet some really interesting and insightful people that you wouldn’t have if you just limited yourself to one business type. A lot of people only pursue connections with people who are higher on the business ladder than they are. But this isn’t necessarily the best strategy. Sometimes, building relationships with smart people who are less experienced than you are can benefit your career.
7. Be choosy on your LinkedIn page.
In the business world, LinkedIn is your primary tool for making a good first impression. If your page is littered with hundreds of contacts because you accept anyone who sends you a request, you might be sabotaging your career. The people you know are indicative of the kind of person you are. Treat your LinkedIn page like you would a real-life interaction. If you wouldn’t recommend a person for a job in the real world, don’t do it on your online profile. In the same vein, don’t reach out to a potential employer or business
coaches to carry on Carnegie’s message.
– Smile –
“This is such a simple, basic rule, yet people just don’t think about it,” says Handal. They’re so focused on needing to network at a conference that they don’t realize they’re walking around with a scowl on their face. Scowling, serious, expressions are forbidding, says Handal. People are more likely to warm up to someone who says good morning with a broad smile than they are to someone with a dour countenance.
– Ask a question –
Joining a group engaged in conversation can be awkward. The best way to do so is to pose a question to the group after getting the gist of the conversation, says Handal. “You build your credibility by asking a question, and for a shy person, that’s a much easier way to engage than by barging in with an opinion,” he says.
– Listen –
One of the most profound points Carnegie made in How to Win Friends was that people love to talk about themselves. If you can get people to discuss their experiences and opinions—and listen with sincere interest—you can have a great conversation with someone without having to say much at all.
– Business Cards –
Always have them handy, says Handal. “They’re an effective way for you to leave your name behind so that people remember who you are.”
– Say The Person’s Name –
“People like to hear their own name,” says Handal, pointing to another one of Carnegie’s basic principles—that a person’s name is the sweetest sound to that person. So when you meet someone, use his name in conversation. Doing so makes the other person feel more comfortable, like you really know him and he knows you.

iring veterans is challenging because of differences in jargon and, in some cases, the seeming lack of transferable skills. Are companies hiring for the wrong reasons and overlooking the right ones? Are they using the best process?
Kurt Gering, director of talent, culture and capability at the 380-employee San Diego County Regional Airport Authority in San Diego, California, reports that his competitive six-month fellowship for two groups of three veterans pays the equivalent of a $56,000 salary plus benefits. Skills have to transfer to meet the needs of the organization. “If a position opens while they’re here,” Gering says, “they may apply and compete for it.” Meanwhile, they receive career development services, opportunities to assess their fit in various parts of the organization, mentoring by veterans and 24 hours of paid time off for interviewing or activities involving the military.

marketable skills, but “probably can operate in an environment of stress and ambiguity. ...These guys are pretty serious in school about getting the skills they need.” Harley Lippman, CEO of Genesis10 Inc., headquartered in New York City, has found employment for hundreds of veterans in his IT staffing and consulting company. He’s also turned veterans away when they couldn’t fit well in his company or client companies. “It’s the right thing to do,” he remarks. “It has to be a win-win or it won’t pass muster. The client would pay a price and veterans would tell other veterans we didn’t coach properly. “People in the front lines are the most selfless,” observes Lippman. “They’re great employees, because they’re the boldest. They have to be innovative, quick thinkers, team players.” How can companies make hiring easier? Veterans programs help. So do job descriptions. Check skills and experience. Kogan looks for initiative and drive – character traits and work ethic. White says veterans “start on time, not show up on time.” In other words, “bet on the person, like investors in startups,” Lippman says. Dr. Mildred L. Five Smart Resolutions For The New Year Y
by Celeste Stewart
ear in, year out, resolutions come and go. Fitness centers see an immediate upsurge in activity in January as the masses decide that now’s the time to finally get into shape. But it’s business as usual as soon as the resolve wears thin. As the credit card bills begin arriving in late January, New Year’s vows to improve finances give way to a feeling of hopelessness. How can you possibly expect to get ahead when you’re drowning in debt? This year, be proactive and forget the “all or nothing” New Year’s resolution. Instead of jumping into a rigid five days per week fitness regime, take steps toward improving your health by choosing realistic, attainable goals. You know that you went overboard with your holiday spending and you know that the next credit card bill will be a whopper. Brace yourself. Instead of allowing that bill to weaken your resolve to improve your finances, use it to motivate yourself. Resolving to improve your finances is smart but it involves action. Simply writing “improve finances” on a list of New Year’s resolutions won’t do. Just as you must exercise and eat less in order to lose weight, you Currently hiring for the following position:

must also get moving in order to get your finances in shape. While there are dozens of steps you can take to improve your finances, the following five resolutions are ones that you can’t afford to neglect. The first two resolutions are steps you can take right now while your resolve is at its peak. Spend a few hours on these and you’ll only have three steps remaining to consider throughout the year.
1.Write your will
Consumer Reports estimates that nearly 66% of people do not have a will. Even if you don’t have much of an estate, writing a will is important, especially if you have children. Who do you trust to appoint a guardian for your children? You or the state? A will is a tool that you can use to appoint your own guardian for your children as well as designate the distribution of your assets. If you die without a will, the state will determine who gets what and who will take care of your children. Writing a will is simple and not as depressing as you might think. In fact, it is empowering because you are taking charge of a situation according to your wishes. Numerous software programs are available to assist you in making out a simple will that is completely legal in your state.
2. Review your insurance

If your house were to burn down tomorrow, would you have enough insurance to fully rebuild it, replace all of its contents, and provide for temporary living expenses in the interim? Are you sure? insurance to provide for your family if you were to die unexpectedly? Take a look at all of your insurance policies and make sure you have adequate coverage in all areas. As you progress through life, your insurance needs change which is why it’s important to review your coverage periodically. You may find you can reduce coverage in some areas or may need to increase it in others depending on how your situation has changed since the last time you reviewed your policies. While you’re at it, make sure to double check the beneficiary of each policy. Is this person still alive? Is this the person you want to receive the funds should you die? Many people forget to re-designate beneficiaries after a divorce.
3. Start saving now
Do you have a retirement plan or IRA? If so, are you contributing the maximum amount? If not, increase your contribution. You’ll feel a pinch at first but soon, you’ll grow used to it, especially if you can have your contribution taken directly out of your paycheck. If you don’t have either one, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic contributions up to the annual limit. The sooner you get started saving, the more you can take advantage of compound interest. Do you have an emergency fund? What would you do if you lost your job suddenly? How would you pay the bills? What if you need a new furnace in the middle of winter? How will you pay for it? An emergency fund gives you peace of mind and funds that you can use should an emergency affect your pocketbook. Plus, instead of paying interest by using a credit card, your emergency fund can earn you interest if you place it in a high interest savings account.
4. Reduce your credit card debt
Take a look at the whopper of a credit card bill, in particular the line that details the finance charges. How much money are you paying for the convenience of instant gratification? As long as you have an unpaid balance, you’ll be paying finance charges every single month. Now look at the minimum payment due. It may be surprisingly low in contrast to the amount you owe. If you’re in the habit of paying the minimum due, you’ll never get ahead.
It’s time to break the hold the credit card company has on you and start paying down your credit card balance. In fact, if you’re paying double digit interest rates, it’s in your best interest to put as much money as you can toward paying off your credit cards.
Do yourself and your future financial situation a favor by working to improve your credit score. Pay your bills on time religiously. Don’t apply for store credit simply to get that 10% one-time discount. Pay down your credit card balances. It’s time to break the hold the credit card company has on you and start paying down your credit card balance. In fact, if you’re paying double digit interest rates, it’s in your best interest to put as much money as you can toward paying off your credit cards. In addition to paying down the balance, a crucial step in reducing your credit card debt is to stop using the card in the first place. This means delaying gratification. But those black leather boots are so cute! Not so fast. They’re cute but ask yourself if you’re willing to go into debt for them. If they are simply a must-have item, try an old-fashioned approach: save up for them.
5. Improve your credit score
Those with poor credit pay more for loans but did you know that your credit score is used to determine other rates? The insurance industry uses credit scores when determining how much to charge you for insurance. If you’re struggling financially and have a low credit score, you’ll feel the pinch even more in higher insurance rates. In addition, employers also look at credit scores when evaluating job candidates. Credit scores serve as a gauge of your responsibility. If you can’t handle your finances, how are you going to handle other duties? Now, not only are you suffering financially and paying high insurance rates, you’re going to have a tough time landing a higher paying job! Do yourself and your future financial situation a favor by working to improve your credit score. Pay your bills on time religiously. Don’t apply for store credit simply to get that 10% one-time discount. Pay down your credit card balances. If you’re headed to the gym this January with a fresh resolve to get into shape, you fully expect to hear the fitness trainer say “no pain, no gain.” The same is true as you work to fix your finances. It will be painful. You will need to make sacrifices in how you spend your money. But just as you’re willing to sweat for a few hours each week, if you put your mind to it, you can take charge of your finances. Article provided by ContanstContent.com

• Medical laboratory technologists and technicians typically do the following: • Analyze body fluids, such as blood, urine, and tissue samples, and record normal or abnormal findings • Study blood samples for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types • Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters • Use automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests at the same time • Log data from medical tests and enter results into a patient’s medical record • Discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians • Supervise or train medical laboratory technicians Both technicians and technologists perform tests and procedures that physicians and surgeons or other healthcare personnel order. However, technologists perform more complex tests and laboratory procedures than technicians do. For example, technologists may prepare specimens and perform manual tests that are based on detailed instructions, whereas technicians perform routine tests that may be more automated. Medical laboratory technicians usually work under the general supervision of medical laboratory technologists or laboratory managers. Technologists in small laboratories perform many types of tests; in large laboratories, they generally specialize. The following are examples of types of specialized medical laboratory technologists: Blood bank technologists, or immunohematology technologists, collect blood, classify it by type, and prepare blood and its components for transfusions. Clinical chemistry technologists prepare specimens and analyze the chemical and hormonal contents of body fluids. Cytotechnologists prepare slides of body cells and examine these cells with a microscope for abnormalities that may signal the beginning of a cancerous growth. Immunology technologists examine elements of the human immune system and its response to foreign bodies. Microbiology technologists examine and identify bacteria and other microorganisms. Molecular biology technologists perform complex protein and nucleic acid tests on cell samples. Like technologists, medical laboratory technicians may work in several areas of the laboratory or specialize in one particular area. For example, histotechnicians cut and stain tissue specimens for pathologists, who are doctors who study the cause and development of diseases at a microscopic level. Technologists and technicians often specialize after they have worked in a particular area for a long time or have received advanced education or training in that area. Medical laboratory technologists held about 164,300 jobs in 2012. Medical laboratory technicians held about 161,500 jobs in 2012. When they follow proper methods to control infection and sterilize equipment, few hazards exist. They wear protective masks, gloves, and goggles for their safety and protection. Technologists and technicians can be on their feet for long periods, and they may need to lift or turn disabled patients to collect samples.
How to Become a Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Technician
Blood bank technologists, or immunohematology technologists, collect, type, and prepare blood and its components for transfusions. Medical laboratory technologists typically need a bachelor’s degree. Technicians usually need an associate’s degree or a postsecondary certificate. Some states require technologists and technicians to be licensed.
Education
Universities and hospitals offer medical technology programs. An entry-level job for technologists usually requires a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or life sciences. A bachelor’s degree program in medical laboratory technology includes courses in chemistry, biology, microbiology, mathematics, and statistics, as well as courses in clinical laboratory skills, management, and education. This degree often is known as a medical laboratory scientist degree. The courses may be offered through a hospital-based program that students attend during their senior year of college. College graduates who major in other sciences and meet a program’s prerequisites, such as having completed required courses in biology and chemistry, also may apply to a medical laboratory science program. Medical laboratory technicians often complete an associate’s degree program in clinical laboratory science. A limited number of 1-year certificate programs are available from hospitals for those who already have a degree in a related field, such as nursing. The Armed Forces and vocational or technical schools also may offer certificate programs for medical laboratory technicians. The technician coursework addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of each of the major laboratory disciplines. High school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical laboratory sciences should take courses in chemistry, biology, and mathematics.
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
Some states require laboratory personnel to be licensed or registered. To be licensed, a technologist often needs a bachelor’s degree and must pass an exam. However, requirements vary by state and specialty. For specific requirements, contact state departments of health or boards of occupational licensing. Certification of medical laboratory technologists and technicians is required for licensure in some states and by some employers. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians can obtain a general certification as a medical laboratory technologist or technician, respectively, or a certification in a specialty, such as cytotechnology or medical biology. Most credentialing institutions require that technologists complete an accredited education program in order to qualify to sit for an examina-

tion. Although certification is not required to enter the occupation in all cases, employers typically prefer to hire certified technologists and technicians.
Important Qualities
Ability to use technology. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians must understand how to operate complex machinery. Detail oriented. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians must follow exact instructions from physicians in order to perform correct tests or procedures. Dexterity. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians require skill while working with their hands. They work closely Protective masks, gloves and with needles and precise labgoggles often are necessary to ensure oratory instruments and must be able to handle these tools the safety of laboratory personnel. effectively. Physical stamina. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians may work on their feet for long periods while collecting samples. They may need to lift or turn disabled patients to collect samples for testing.
Advancement
After additional education, work experience, or certification, technologists and technicians may specialize in one of many areas of laboratory science, such as immunology, histotechnology, or clinical chemistry.
Pay
The median annual wage for medical laboratory technologists was $57,580 in May 2012. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $39,580, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $78,900. The median annual wage for medical laboratory technicians was $37,240 in May 2012. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $24,790, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $57,710. Most medical laboratory technologists and technicians work full time. Technologists and technicians who work in facilities that are always open, such as hospitals and some independent laboratories, may work evening, weekend, or overnight hours. Is A Manufacturing Career A Good Option For Young People? by Mike Collins
THE OPPORTUNITIES: THE CASE FOR MANUFACTURING JOBS 1.Demand
The need to replace 10 million manufacturing workers in the U.S. certainly confirms that there will be many manufacturing jobs available in the next 15 years, and perhaps even more jobs if America can maintain its number one position and find a way to grow manufacturing.
2.Clean High Technology Environment

Many students, parents, and teachers still identify with the old vision of a manufacturing plant as a dirty, grimy, and dangerous working environment where workers do low skill and back breaking jobs. But this vision is far from the truth today. As manufacturing has continuously automated over the last 40 years, there are few low-skilled jobs left, and many of the modern plants look more like laboratories than manufacturing plants. Manufacturers need people who can operate, maintain, and troubleshoot their high tech equipment.
3.White Collar Jobs
Many young people think that manufacturing is only about blue collar jobs in the shop. This is not true, and many types of manufacturers have as many white collar jobs as blue collar jobs. There are design engineering, production control, purchasing, sales, marketing, and General Management jobs.
4.Wages
The average manufacturing job pays about $20,000 more per year then the average service job. Getting the skills needed to be craftsman or journeyman in manufacturing can really boost annual pay, as well. A good example is the high tech sector in Austin Texas where the average wage is $88,000 per year.

If there are so many job opportunities, why don’t we just announce the opportunity to parents, community colleges, universities, high schools, and grade schools? Then, get the industry and government to support a massive education and training initiative. Well, there are many problems and obstacles to consider:
THE PROBLEMS 1. Manufacturing’s Image
The single biggest problem is that American manufacturing has a bad image. Many students and citizens still see manufacturing as a world of dirty, dark, sweatshops offering long hours and low pay. Students use adjectives like boring, repetitious, and dangerous to describe their preconceived notion of manufacturing work. A study sponsored by National Association of Manufactures (N.A.M.) and Deloitte Touche showed that manufacturing’s image was “found to be heavily loaded with negative connotations and universally tied to the stereotype of the assembly line.” It was also viewed by most people to be a dying industry that was quickly moving offshore. Another poll, sponsored by Nuts Bolts & Thingamajigs (NBT) and the Foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association (FMA), “showed a majority of teens — 52 percent — have little or no interest in a manufacturing career and another 21 percent are ambivalent. When asked why, a whopping 61 percent said they seek a professional career, far surpassing other issues, such as pay (17 percent), career growth (15 percent) and physical work (14 percent).” It will be a big challenge for American manufacturing to convince students seeking careers that they should invest in a manufacturing direction. The perception by high school and college students is that there seems to be no sense of loyalty from the manufacturing companies and very little security. This keeps students turned off to the career path.
2. Parents
Parents have not viewed working in a factory as an acceptable career goal for at least 30 years. Regardless of the emerging manufacturing job opportunities, most parents still want their kids to go to college and get a white-collar job. They still see college degrees as the key to getting their children a piece of the American Dream.
As manufacturing has continuously automated over the last 40 years, there are few low-skilled jobs left, and many of the modern plants look more like laboratories than manufacturing plants.
3. Teachers and Counselors
Many teachers and counselors also see manufacturing as a dead end career path. They hear reports on the news all the time about plant closures, layoffs, and outsourcing. Both teachers and counselors are in a position to recommend career paths at an early age, and most would not recommend manufacturing because of their perceptions.
4. Shop classes
It is ironic that at the same time manufacturing needs skilled workers by the thousands, most shop or industrial arts classes have been shutdown and replaced by computer labs.
5. Vocational Training
The community college problem is that many of the vocational courses are not sufficiently financed, “as a result of community college funding formulas established by state legislatures that limit the number of technical non-credit courses, (only four states provide equal per-capita subsidies for all students).”
6. Advanced Technical Training
One of the biggest issues in trying to convince young people to make manufacturing a career is the advanced training needed for manufacturing workers in the 21st century. Nobody (including the government) can seem to agree on a definition of advanced training. Because manufacturing plants are so automated and use such advanced equipment, the training needed is similar to the concept of apprentice training that leads to journeyman credentials. The Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training is a Federal department that keeps track of all registered apprentices. This program is supposed to assist private industry in developing and improving apprenticeships and other training programs designed to provide the skilled workers needed to compete in today’s global economy. In 2008 the Bureau of Apprentice Training listed 397,375 apprentices as registered. The overall number of registered apprentices is not growing. Of this number they estimated that 75% of the apprentices are in construction; another 20% are in electrical, plumbing, brick layers, and other trades; and only about 5% of the registered apprentices are in manufacturing. This is a tiny number of apprentices out of 11 million workers, which indicates that most manufacturing companies are not investing in apprentice style train-

To recruit the necessary people, manufacturing really needs to describe the opportunity as a career – not just another job. I think this will take a longer term commitment to job security for the recruits. It may also require offering internships and scholarships to help pay for their education and training. Young people need to know, both historically and moving forward, that a career in manufacturing has great potential — including the opportunity to eventually own and operate their own business — that comes with a career in the skilled trades. The big issue is not promoting this career to young people, it is about money and investment. I am not very optimistic that many of the suggestions I have described will be acceptable to manufacturers or the government, but perhaps we will simply have to get deeper into the skilled worker crisis before these kinds of suggestions will be considered. Working from Home:
Being An Online Seller by Elka Torpey
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
W
hen a friend asked Ann Drew Yu that question, it prompted her to open her imagination. Eventually, she decided to take a risk and start her own business: developing an inspirational product that she now sells online. An English teacher turned stay-at-home mom, Ann designed a product—a box with cards and other tools—to help girls and women direct their lives in a positive way. Her original idea was so popular, Ann created a different version for classrooms. Ann likes that online sales have allowed her to connect with people as far away as Australia. “Having an online business gives me the reach of the world,” she says. “It Even for successful sellers, earnings fluctuate—so it’s important not gives me a platform to share what I think is a really useful to rely too heavily on potential earnings from an online business. and meaningful product.” As online shopping has grown, so too has the number of people who make money selling products online. Online sellers can sell just about anything. Some, like Ann, design or create the products themselves. Others sell new merchandise, antiques, or used items, like books or toys. Starting an online business can be as simple as having something to sell and access to the Internet. But there are a lot of factors to consider if you’re going to have a business that thrives. One is to have confidence in your idea, especially early on. “You really have to believe in what you’re doing, because it’s a twisty and bumpy road at times,” says Ann. “If I didn’t really believe in what I’m doing, I’m sure I would have walked away by now.” Another factor for business success is helping your product to stand out among the millions of other products online. Search engine optimization is one way that online sellers like Ann ensure that their website link appears at or near the top of the results when people search for a product. “You can have the most useful or beautiful product ever,” Ann says, “but connecting it to the right people defines whether you have a business.” One of the easiest ways to start selling online is to set up an account with an established shopping website, which brings in customers and provides guidance on how to sell online, usually at some cost to the seller. A leading site recommends that you start out selling an item you already have, to get Delaware North Companies is a a feel for how the process works. Keeping products affordable and competitively priced, while still making a profit, is often difficult when selling online, because consumers can easily compare products and prices. Even for successful sellers, earnings fluctuate—so it’s important not to rely too heavily on potential earnings from an online business. “If we were relying on my income alone instead of my husband’s,” Ann says of her family’s finances, “I would not have been able to quit my day job.”

Work hours are often irregular, as sellers occasionally need to work additional or unusual hours to fill orders. But they have more control over their schedules than does someone who works a traditional, 9-to-5 job.
Success for most online sellers doesn’t happen overnight: It takes a lot of hard work and a willingness to adapt as you go along.
A rewarding future in Glass
As self-employed workers, online sellers have other expenses, too. These often include health insurance and saving for retirement. Prospective sellers should also check to see if they need a seller’s permit or if their state has other requirements for people who sell products online. Frequently, online sellers work part time at their business, perhaps holding another job or, like Ann, raising a family. Work hours are often irregular, as sellers occasionally need to work additional or unusual hours to fill orders. But they have more control over their schedules than does someone who works a traditional, 9-to-5 job. No formal education is required to become an online seller. Still, it’s important to have good writing skills for crafting product descriptions and other web content, strong
organizational and bookkeeping ability for keeping track of earnings and expenses, and resourcefulness for figuring out how to get products noticed. Some level of technical skill for creating and managing an online presence is helpful, says Ann. Although other online sellers may work on search engine optimization and site design themselves, Ann hires people to do these tasks for her. But technical ability and other skills aren’t always enough to turn a good idea into a profitable venture. Success for most online sellers doesn’t happen overnight: It takes a lot of hard work and a willingness to adapt as you go along. “When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not following a path,” says Ann. “You’re learning from what other people have done, sure, but you’re making your own way.” Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Fifteen Great Reasons To Hire Veterans W

hen you hire veterans, you’re choosing from a diverse pool of employees who demonstrate a wide range of knowledge and skills. Veterans possess a commitment to excellence, demonstrated integrity, and a drive to perform the best work possible. With them, you’ll find a level of discipline, maturity, and training that is rare in civilian employees. The following are just a few of the things you benefit from when you hire a vet.
1. Diversity
Veterans represent many different walks of life and are accustomed to working with all types of people regardless of race, gender, religion, or ethnicity.
2. Leadership
Veterans are trained by the military to accept and carry out responsibility for resources, tasks, and their own behavior. This special training consists of inspiring leadership in others and motivating others; setting examples; and giving clear and detailed directions.
3. Core Values
While each branch of the military has its own specific set of core values, they all adhere to the same basic principles: commitment, integrity, accountability, and “service before self”. Veterans understand the importance of these principles in building a strong team.
4. Team-Player Attitude
Veterans understand the value of genuine teamwork, and how diverse individuals can cooperate to achieve over-arching goals. Veterans know that real teamwork grows from a sense of responsibility to their colleagues.
5. Ability to Conform to Structure and Policies
Every organization needs structure and rules to prevent chaos and eventual breakdown. This is especially true in the military, which is why individuals in the service are trained to follow specific rules in their work environment. Policies and procedures ensure safety, stability, and productivity. Veterans have an understanding of the value of accountability, and perform their work from this unique perspective. They have learned to demonstrate loyalty to their leaders and units.
6. Ability to Handle Stress and Meet Deadlines
A typical requirement of military training is that service members be prepared to perform. They must be able to not only do their job, but do it in an efficient manner. Setting priorities, accomplishing missions, and meeting schedules are ongoing responsibilities of individuals in the military. With this responsibility comes added pressure and stress, but military personnel are trained on how to deal with these factors in a constructive way.
Who are we?

7. Advanced Specialized Training
When you hire a veteran, you can be confident you’re hiring someone who has received advanced training in their field. Veterans have been designated a specialized focus, and have completed skillbuilding education for their individual jobs. They may have also received advanced and crossreferenced training on financial, computerized, engineering, medical, technical, administrative, personnel, or security types of work.
8. Planning and Organizational Skills
Veterans understand that careful planning and workload management are crucial to most military operations. Thoroughly considered objectives, time schedules, strengths and limitations of others, supplies, logistics, resources, and various other factors need to be kept in mind at all times. Evaluation, organization, and adjustment are continuously being analyzed.
9. Technology Skills
Today’s military personnel use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Working in the armed forces requires a high degree of technological skill and education to keep up with increasingly complex systems. Military members are frequently among the first to adopt new

12. Immediate Contribution
The experience veterans have gained in the military make them valuable team players from the very first day on the job. Veterans are used to and enjoy new challenges and opportunities to demonstrate initiative. They are nimble thinkers, and are generous in giving praise to those who earn it.
13. Government Relocation Assistance
Veterans are given government-paid relocation when leaving active duty. The exact amount of this assistance varies by individual, but it can still help lower your company’s expenses when hiring. With relocation assistance paid, your employee search doesn’t need to be limited to the local prospects; you can seek talent anywhere you like.
14. Tax Breaks
The experience veterans have gained in the military make them valuable team players from the very first day on the job. Veterans are used to and enjoy new challenges and opportunities to demonstrate initiative. technology. Many vets have been kept abreast of international trends relating to business, and can bring both technological savvy and a global outlook to your corporation.
10. Self-Direction and Motivation
The military is one of the most demanding institutions in the world. The rigorous training military members receive breeds highly motivated employees who set high goals for themselves and achieve them. Veterans know how to analyze and resolve difficult and complex problems without constant guidance from superiors. When you employ a vet, you’re hiring a self-starter who is driven to get the job done right the first time.
11. Time Management Skills
Most veterans know how to multi-task, and how to accomplish individual tasks in the most efficient manner. Many have triumphed over adversity, so they know the importance of dedication and perseverance in achieving goals.
One of the biggest benefits of hiring veterans is the number of tax credits available to employers. Tax credits run between $1500 to $8000.00 per veteran hire, and are counted as a one-for-one dollar credit against the employer’s payable income taxes.
15. Background and Security Clearance
Hire a vet, and you can gain greater peace of mind knowing you’ve employed a safe, drug-free individual. Over 90 percent of military members have had extensive background checks run for various security clearance levels. Hiring a veteran reduces the chance your company will be put at risk due to illegal behavior. If security clearance is a requirement of your company, a veteran can be transferred in status. This will save you a good deal in background investigation costs. If you’re seeking employees to fill some vacancies at your company, consider hiring a veteran. Vets bring a unique skill and mindset to your organization. They offer a level of skill, professionalism, and work ethic that is rare in today’s workforce. When you hire someone who has been employed in the military, you can be sure you’re working with someone who has a desire to do the best job possible. Hiring veterans is an economical solution that will strengthen your work team and give you a clear edge on your competition. Article provided by ContanstContent.com

Interview with A Nursing Instructor Donna Swope of Columbia, Maryland describes her path to becoming a nursing instructor. What do you teach?
My specialty is obstetrics, the study of pregnancy and childbirth. I teach an obstetrical nursing course in a 4-year nursing program and supervise the students when they do clinical work in local hospitals. These students assist doctors and nurses with pregnant women who come in for appointments, women in labor, and newborns and parents after delivery. I work directly with the students and talk with hospital staff to get feedback on the students’ progress, which I incorporate into their grade for the course. I also teach a nursing leadership course, which discusses topics like conflict resolution, delegation, and teamwork.
What are some of your other duties?

Outside the classroom, I am constantly updating my knowledge about the subjects that I teach. I need to understand them before I can teach them to students. I also have to assess how my students are learning, so I spend time creating and grading exams, reading student papers, and evaluating student presentations. And, to keep up with the latest developments in nursing, I attend nursing conferences and read articles in professional journals, then use this information to update my lecture and classroom materials. Instructors are also expected to be active in their nursing program, which in my case involves chairing or being a member of various committees and representing nursing on university-level committees.

Did you always know this was what you wanted to do?
I’ve known I wanted to be a nurse since I was a kid. My mother was a medical secretary, so I was already acquainted with healthcare work. When I was 8 years old, I was very ill in the hospital for 2 weeks. During that time, I became interested in the work of the nurses. They really took care of me, and I have never forgotten how they changed the whole experience for the better. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a nurse. My first job as a teenager was as a nursing assistant, and I was president of the Future Nurses Club at my high school.
What’s your educational background?
I went to a nursing school and graduated with a diploma in nursing. After working in a clinical setting, I went back to school for a bachelor’s degree in nursing and then for a master’s degree in clinical nursing. Since then, I’ve taken a lot of continuing education classes to keep up with developments in nursing and to improve my skills in areas like curriculum development.
Talk about your other qualifications and how they helped prepare you.
I have three professional certifications, all related to obstetrics: Inpatient obstetrics, lactation management, and pregnancy loss. To become certified, I had to complete a certain number of clinical hours in each area and pass a national exam. Certification isn’t mandatory for teachers, but it’s often recommended. Having certification allowed me to design and teach What’s your best advice for a seminar to nurses and doctors to help them with families who have aspiring nurses or nursing instructors? What about networking?
www. eoejournal.com
Networking is very important in nursing for both students and teachers; it’s how a lot of us find our jobs. I network a lot at professional nursing conferences. Students in my nursing program attend career expos, where they meet potential colleagues and employers. During their time in the program, students work and study in several hospitals—often as many as six or eight. They have a lot of opportunities to meet people and possibly get a job offer or a recommendation. There are also a number of student groups in my nursing program that provide networking opportunities. I advise several of these groups. We plan events and host seminars to help students with things like interviewing and communication skills.

How To Be A Successful Caregiver: What You Need To Know Y
Page 23
by Corissa Buehner
ou have just taken a job as a caregiver for a senior home care assistance company. Providing at-home healthcare is a major responsibility, but can also be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling careers you will ever have. It is also not like anything else you will ever do in your life. As you prepare for your first day on the job with your new clients, you will have a million things running through your mind. These include the proper procedures, how to clock in and clock out, remembering to document everything you do, and any other number of things you learned in training. However, there are a few key factors you need to keep in mind to be successful in your new career.
You Cannot Treat Your Work Like A Job
You may not fully understand this distinction right now, but once you step foot into you client’s home, it will start to become clear. To you, you are going to work. You have a job to do, and a company to answer to should you not perform adequately. But to your client, they are opening up their lives to you. They are not going to work. For them, this is their life and you are now a part of their life.
Providing at-home healthcare is a major responsibility, but can also be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling careers you will ever have.
You must be prepared to treat your client as a friend. As a caregiver, you will not be able to distance yourself emotionally and mentally from your work the way you would in other careers. If you try to stay detached and distant, your client will sense it. However, your client will interpret your distance as you not caring about them. They will not respond to this well, and will make every day difficult for you. If you are not prepared for the social aspect of this job, to treat your client as a friend or as you would your grandmother, then you do not understand the scope of this career.
Don’t Argue, Apologize
The last thing you ever want to do as a caregiver is get into an argument with your client. This will cause you nothing but trouble. Now, some of the people you take care of will be argumentative with you at times. It can be something as little as accusing you of moving the remote control when they accidentally misplaced it, or they may be combative and attack you personally. But no matter how far off-base your client is, directly arguing with them is not the answer. Alternatively, learn the exquisite art of apologizing, even when you know that you are right. Here is the major caveat though. If they accuse you of doing something wrong or stealing, do not admit guilt in your apology. After all, you didn’t do it. Instead, say that you are sorry that they are upset. Offer to help them find what they have lost. Or apologize that you had a misunderstanding if that’s the case. This will show your client that you care about their feelings and concerns, and will prevent conflict that would alter or destroy the relationship you built with your client. If you keep these two important factors in mind as you walk in the door your first day on the job, you will not go wrong. Building and maintaining a relationship with your client is key to success in home care assistance. Article provided by ContanstContent.com

ome people are simply not satisfied with getting any old job just to make ends meet. Others refuse to go into the corporate world because they do not agree with the lack of ethical behaviour that many companies exhibit. Therefore, these are the types of individuals who really want to make a difference in the world by using their skills and their career choices to help people, wildlife, or pets, or to clean up the environment, help find cures to illnesses and heal people, and assist in making the world a better place before they die. When it comes to choosing a degree that will not only let you make a positive difference in the world, but also allow you to make a decent wage that you can then use to buy a house and raise and support a family, the choices can certainly be limited. It can become frustrating for the idealist to find work in a chosen career that is there to help others, especially when a lot of the non-profit sector either only offers low-paying jobs or only has volunteer positions available. However, if you are one of these idealists who wants a job that will open up doors to helping others, what you need to realise is that you do have more choices than you thought. You can go into law, for example, and work by helping victims of crime get the justice they deserve. Or you can instead go into politics to help change the system from the inside. But one degree that can allow you to help heal others and make them feel better each and every day is a nursing degree. If you want to get into a field that helps heal those who are sick, but you do not necessarily feel like you would be a good candidate to become a doctor, a surgeon, or a therapist, a nursing degree may be the perfect solution. With a nursing degree, especially at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, you can do so much every day to positively impact the lives of others. As a nurse, you have so many career opportunities to choose from. So whether you want to work in the emergency room of a hospital to help those who are traumatised and injured or you want to help administer chemotherapy to cancer patients and help them have a more positive outlook on their disease, a nursing degree will open all of these doors and more. Or you can instead choose to work in a specific area of a hospital, such as in the maternity ward where babies are born or in the geriatric section, where you can help the elderly. If you do not want to work in a hospital environment, you Parker Hannifin can certainly also work as a nurse in a private practice. HEARING IMPAIRMENT
In addition to the careers listed above, those who are hearing-impaired can perform most of the same jobs as hearing people can. However, hearing-impaired job seekers may want to consider a field where their condition is a non-issue. For example, jobs working with loud equipment or in noisy environments such as factories can be a good fit, as noise would not be a distraction and potential hearing loss would be a moot point. Examples include construction and factory work of all types. Here, we examine one labor area—industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers.

travel is involved. This makes it easier for the disabled and their employer to ensure the work area is accessible and comfortable. The employment category of “office and administrative support” is expected to generate more jobs than any other field between now and 2020, according to the BLS. Below, we examine two specific office jobs with good income and potential for growth. Both relate to information technology (IT).
Computer Systems Analyst
What they do: These professionals review computer systems and protocols to help management run their organization more efficiently. Where they work: Many work in computer design firms. Other frequent employers are finance and insurance, company management, and government. Analysts can work directly for an organization or they can be self-employed and work as consultants. Education: A bachelor’s degree in computer science is generally required. However, if a candidate can write computer code and has a liberal arts or business degree, that combination can also work well. Income: The median wage in 2011 was $82,160.
Software Developer
What they do: This is one of the “hotter” tech jobs. As the title suggests, these professionals develop software applications and systems. They write, test, improve, and maintain computer code that helps end users perform specific tasks. They also instruct programmers on how to write code for the software. Where they work: Developers work in the IT department of businesses or for software firms. Some work in the finance and insurance industry. Education: A bachelor’s degree in computer science or mathematics. A master’s degree may be preferable for some positions. Income: The median salary in 2011 was $89,280. To sum up, people with disabilities can perform many of the jobs available to the able-bodied. Those with hearing, sight, or mobility impairments can even turn their disabilities into employment assets through careful self-marketing and job selection. Five Job Seeking Tips for Disabled Workers by Vicki Salemi
Need some inspiration? Look no further. According to Next Avenue, Kate Williams, runs an employment program in San Francisco. The 72-year-old blind woman told the site, “I have an opportunity to let people know that life is not being defined by your disability, but your ability.” Here are several recommendations for disabled job seekers, in particular for the blind and visually impaired. 1. Start with a positive mindset. “You have to get out of the ‘I can’t do it. I’m not capable’ mentality.” 2. Target a company where you really want to work. Next, network to find someone you know who works there. 3. Find a mentor. Her advice? “It’s best if you can connect with someone who is blind and doing a job that interests you. Ask them how they got their job and how they make it work with their disability.” 4. Disclose your disability to a potential employer. After landing an interview, Williams emphasized letting the interviewer know about the disability prior to the interview (so after it’s been set but before it happens.) “If I walk in with cane or guide dog, all the person will be thinking is blind, blind, blind…I want the hiring manager to look at my skills and my talents. If they’re prepared ahead of time, they can focus on that when they meet you.” 5. Make eye contact. Pointing out this isn’t so easy when you’re blind, Williams trains job seekers to connect with interviewers to “look at the voice.” This tells them where the person is. “Then, you know that about three inches above the voice, there are going to be a pair of eyes.” Article provided by Mediabistro.com “Delivering News & Insight About Jobs in the Media”

How To Choose A Nursing Job & Nursing Degree
January 2015
by superscholar.org
he current serious shortage of nurses is expected to continue, partly due to medical advances. Put simply: people who would have died now live, but need nurses to continue to recover. Registered nurses (RNs) constitute the largest healthcare occupation in the United States, at 2.6 million jobs—only 60 percent of which are in hospitals. According to a recent report by the American Association of Community Colleges, There will be 581,500 new jobs for registered nurses by 2018, representing a 22% increase in employment. The number of available jobs will soar even higher when factoring in retirements, resulting in 1,039,000 available jobs that will need to be filled by 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Employment and Training Administration.
A million jobs ….
There are several schools of thought on the subject of credentials in booming fields like nursing: One is, get the best nursing degrees you can right now, for a chance at the top job offers and career growth potential. The other is, if you get in at the start of the boom with any avail-
able credentials, you will be carried upward by your experience and can upgrade later (through anonline RN to BSN or RN to MSN program) — while getting paid, maybe even with financial assistance from your employer. You must decide which is the best strategy for you. Another consideration: It is much easier to get in at the start of a boom; if we wait until demand levels off, we may find entry barriers such as formidable, expensive credentials, whereas before the system would accept and train a hardworking, sensible person of good character. Currently, many stepping stones to advancement are in fact certificate programs that can be taken as adult education or online. That’s important because early career nursing usually involves shift work, so you need flexibility for your education (and online schools offer more flexibility for working professionals). Most nurses graduating in 2005 or later (nearly 57%) have associates degrees from nursing schools. Certain specialties, of course, such nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, and nurse practitioner, need a master’s degree from an accredited nursing school.
Due to nurse shortages, you may be able to get attractive financial assistance to complete any nursing degree at an accredited nursing school, and can often apply your certificate credits toward more advanced degrees. You certainly needn’t worry much that you won’t find a job that will enable you to pay back loans. You may not even need to borrow much money. As one source puts it, In order to encourage more students to enter

There Are Some Great Jobs You Might Never Have Expected from an Online Nursing Degree
January 2015 into the nursing profession to help fill the shortage, numerous organizations, private sources and the government are now supplying scholarships, grants and other gifts of money to help pay for students educations. The HRSA or Health Resources and Service Administration, which is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, offer numerous valuable grants either tangentially or specifically applicable to nursing in the United States. Compensation for nurses is quite promising; the main factors that determine salary are, of course, level of qualification and need. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the average annual salary for a registered nurse as $62,450, with the top 10% making over $92,000 a year. Also, because most nurses work for institutions (hospitals, government health care programs, schools, agencies, et cetera), the benefits are usually attractive. You may hear references to “diploma” programs in nursing; these usually older programs have typically been offered by teaching hospitals; the trend today is toward degree or certificate programs based in educational institutions. The most remarkable thing about nursing is how varied it is. Below we’ve listed different types of nursing jobs and nursing degrees you can get in no particular order. Instead, we’ve taking a look at some nursing specialties in relation to the strengths of the particular online schools: (Note: Degree Wizard , below, means that you can find a convenient online degree program toward this career in the Wizard box at left by selecting “Certificate Programs”, then “Health and Medicine/Nursing”, then “Nursing”. For best follow-up results in any research, note your university choice.)

you can complete an online certificate program in nursing instruction, and can also use the credits toward a Masters in Nursing. Here, as with all teaching, some experience as a nurse is expected. This career offers regular hours in a field where many other careers require shift work.

Consider a Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education (Degree Wizard: U Mass Online, Lewis University). After getting a Masters in Nursing, you are well placed to help set up programs as well as teach.
“… n ursing and teaching, but must I get a Masters first?”
Consider a Certificate – Contemporary Nursing (Degree Wizard: Drexel University) You need a Bachelors of Nursing for this program. Courses are chosen from the MSN in Contemporary Nursing Faculty curriculum. Upon completion of this online certificate program, the student will have 12 graduate credits from an NLN/CCNE approved Masters in Nursing Program, which can be used towards a Masters at Drexel or any other university, so it should be easy to get a Masters later.

Your observations and actions may spell life or death for a medically unstable patient, or you may need to help a family come to terms with very difficult decisions following an accident or medical emergency. After your nursing degree, you may wish to consider some course work in counseling, to give you a head start in dealing with such issues. You’ll be well paid, but it can be high stress work.
Cardiac nurse
As a cardiac nurse, you will work with the cardiologist to care for patients with congestive heart failure, angina, and similar problems. Pediatric nurse
Here, you not only look after young children in medical need, but you play a key role in helping their parents understand and adapt to their needs. You are their advocate as well as their nurse, because they often do not understand clearly what is happening and cannot explain things for themselves. Many are frightened, angry, and confused to a degree beyond what most adults would experience. After your RN, your best bet is to qualify as a Certified Pediatric Nurse. This field is booming partly because older people have more heart problems and partly because today’s medical science can do much more about them. The American Heart Association notes, for example, that, among the more than 1.2 million Americans who have heart attacks each year, 460, 000 die – of those, 300,000 could not get medical treatment in time.3 In short, most people who get treatment live, and most people who do not get treatment don’t. As a cardiac nurse, you will work with the cardiologist (heart doctor) to care for patients with congestive heart failure, angina, and similar problems. After your RN, try to get jobs in cardiac units, especially those that help you keep up with the latest treatments and technologies. You’ll need that because, for certification, you must log 2,000 hours working as a cardiac nurse as well as attend continuing education.
Surgical nurse
Not only do you assist the surgeon before, during, and after the operation, but you’re often the one who must explain matters to patients and families and sometimes advocate for the confused or inarticulate patient. For best career chances, after your nursing degree, get certified as a Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) offered through the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board. Note: If you are uncertain about the level of stress this may involve, cosmetic surgery is also a growing field; it offers regular hours in a low stress environment.

edy disease, disability, or injury in your community. After you receive your nursing degree you can probably just seek work as a public health nurse, especially if your ambition is to work in an existing program in a community challenged by chronic health problems such as alcohol, obesity, or illicit drug use. However, if you acquire enough experience to dream of designing your own program, look at graduate certificates to build your resume and make the contacts who can get funding for your ideas. The trend toward prevention in health care, rather than treating existing disease, should mean more positions in public health.

Alaskan RNs are well paid and, and can easily find help getting a job and getting settled in a unique American environment.
I want adventure! Show me some! Your RN can be a ticket to adventure too. Working through a service provider such as a hospital, hospice, or social agency, you provide in-home care for patients who prefer that option. Frontier nurse Private duty nurse
Sometimes, you are the patient’s private nurse at a hospital (for example, if the patient is a prominent person, publicity might otherwise disrupt the regular work of other staff). If the patient is not especially demanding medically, you could be a Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse (starting with a high school diploma). But for seriously ill patients, you may need your RN, especially if certain treatments may only be legally provided by RNs in your state (injections of scheduled narcotic painkillers, for example). This is a well-paying field because those patients who choose this option are paying only for your time and supplies, not for a hospital’s maintenance. However, you must be prepared to deal with your patient’s friends and family (or fans) tactfully, with limited institutional backup.
Have you considered nursing in an adventurous, but still American, locale? Try Alaska, where there is a persistent shortage of nurses, due possibly to the fact that nursing has traditionally primarily attracted women and as of the 2000 census, there were 109 Alaskan men for every 100 women. Alaskan RNs are well paid and, and can easily find help getting a job and getting settled in a unique American environment.

What Is A Skilled Nursing Facility For Seniors?
he elderly frequently suffer from serious illnesses or injuries that require extended periods of physical therapy and rehabilitation. Families may not be able to provide the specialized care that these seniors require. The skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a category of medical treatment facility for people who need intensive medical treatment over a longer term than is generally provided by a traditional hospital. It is not a nursing home, although the two terms are often used interchangeably.

The problem here, however, is that this approach ignores the fact some skills are learnable. For example, you can learn how to be a better orator. For this reason, don’t automatically dismiss a job you feel you’d love if you aren’t good at a given area. Instead, ask yourself what you can do to get better and then make a game plan to reach the level required.

If you want a more luxurious lifestyle, though, or if you feel compelled to earn more so you can give to charity, leave a bigger inheritance or support businesses, you’ll need to focus on careers that are more lucrative. As you think about your money goals, take a hard look at the cost of the education necessary to get to the career you want. What is the federal government?
The U.S. government oversees the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The federal government is divided into three branches: legislative, judicial, and executive. These three branches comprise departments and agencies that are responsible for specific government functions. Legislative. The legislative branch makes laws and levies taxes to fund the federal government’s services. This branch includes Congress, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. It also includes agencies that support Congress, such as the Capitol Police, the Government Accountability Office, and the Library of Congress. Judicial. The judicial branch interprets the meaning of laws and how they are applied. It is made up of the Supreme Court of the United States; lower courts, such as Courts of Appeals; special courts, including the Tax Court; and support organizations, such as the Federal Judiciary Center. Executive. The executive branch enforces laws. This branch includes the President; the 15 executive departments, including the Departments of Defense, Labor, and State; and related agencies within the departments. It also includes independent agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency; boards and committees, such as the National Park Foundation; and quasiofficial agencies, such as the Smithsonian Institution. Most federal agencies are part of the executive branch. Examples of agencies in this branch are the Census Bureau (which is part of the Department of Commerce), the Federal Housing Administration (Department of Housing and Urban Development), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Department of Health and Human Services).
Who works for the federal government?

United States. But total federal employment varies, depending on which workers are counted. For example, the OES total includes only federal executive branch workers. Data in this article are from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and include full-time, permanent, non-postal civilian workers from all branches, for a total of 1.8 million. (Federal contractors are not directly employed by the government and are not included in these totals.) OPM data show that the federal workforce is diverse, and the demographics are similar to that of the overall labor force. In 2013, men slightly outnumbered women, for example. More than one-third of federal employees were minorities, with Blacks making up the largest portion (18 percent) of these minority workers. And nearly 9 percent of federal workers have a disability.
What do federal workers do?
Federal workers help the government operate and provide its services. OPM groups workers according to their tasks, such as administrative, professional, technical, and clerical. These groups are based on OPM data categories, which are different from the BLS categories based on the Standard Occupational Classification system. Administrative. According to OPM, nearly 40 percent of federal workers are in administrative occupations. These workers may handle payroll, train new employees, and develop standard operating procedures. What education do they need?
The federal government hires workers with broad levels of education and experience. OPM establishes minimum qualifications by occupation or job. For example, workers in professional and technical occupations often need at least a bachelor’s degree, and those in clerical occupations may qualify with a high school diploma. The federal government uses a few different systems to classify jobs. For example, the Federal Wage System classifies jobs in trade, craft, and other blue-collar occupations. But the most common is the General Schedule (GS) system. Under this system, agencies assign each job a GS grade from 1 to 15 based on job duties and qualifications. When federal agencies refer to job classifications, they combine the “GS” classification with a hyphen and the grade level. For example, an economist job may be classified as “GS-9.” Jobs at GS grades 1 through 4 are often internships or related to manual labor, and these typically require an associate’s degree as the highest education level. Most entry-level jobs are GS grades 5 through 7 and typically require at least a bachelor’s degree. Jobs at GS-13 or above may be supervisory or managerial positions. Some jobs, such as editor, require a bachelor’s degree but do not specify a field of study. Others, such as museum curators, require a degree in a specific major or designate a minimum number of credits in a particular subject area. And in some cases, having more education or experience than a position requires may qualify applicants for a higher GS grade— and higher pay.

In 2013, according to OPM, the average annual federal salary was just over $79,000. Federal workers’ wages or salaries are based on their job classification, grade level, geographic location, and length of employment. To help offset higher living costs, the federal government includes a premium,

called locality pay, for employees who work in 34 urban areas. This premium provides a percentagebased increase over the base pay. For example, a GS-7 job pays nearly $3,000 more in Boston, Massachusetts, than it does in Decatur, Alabama. Workers typically are eligible for “step increases” every 1 to 3 years, until they reach the maximum step in the grade for their job. There are 10 steps at each grade level. Step increases are accompanied by a small bump in pay. Along with salaries or wages, employee compensation in the federal government include benefits, such as subsidized health insurance.
equal opportunity employment journal One of the biggest draws of federal work is the chance to make a positive difference. Satisfaction often comes from knowing that they are helping and serving people in their roles as public employees.
Rewards and Challenges
January 2015 the sheer size of the federal government makes it difficult for agencies to act independently. The vastness of the government contributes to another commonly cited challenge: the complexity of the hiring process. Some people find the job descriptions and application procedures confusing, for example. And workers with technical skills often feel their career options are limited. Similar to many other organizations, federal agencies don’t control their own budgets. Spending is set by the President and Congress for the government as a whole. Uncertain budgeting makes long-term planning difficult and may negatively affect worker morale. An agency’s ability to maintain or improve their operations, such as through updating equipment and supporting innovation, depends on the funding it receives. Despite the challenges, some federal workers feel the rewards of working for the public are worth whatever sacrifices they make to forego the private sector. Are you ready to join the federal workforce?

Getting Hired by The Federal Government by Dennis Vilorio
hanges to the federal hiring process have made it easier than in the past to apply for federal jobs. But getting a job in the federal government can still be challenging. You might have to sort through dozens of vacancies to find a job that matches your qualifications, for example. Understanding how to find and apply for vacancies can help you focus your search. This article covers the federal hiring process. The first section gives an overview of how to find vacancies for federal jobs. The second section explains how to interpret these vacancy announcements. The third section discusses how to master the application process, and the fourth section describes the final steps. Resources for more information are listed at the end of the article. This is the second of two articles about working for the federal government. The first article, published in September, covers frequently asked questions about working for the government, employment details, and the rewards and challenges of federal work.
Overview: Finding Vacancies
The federal government offers employment opportunities in a wide range of occupations, agencies, and locations. With so many choices, you may have trouble identifying the vacancies that fit your skills and interests. The following steps provide an overview of how to find vacancies at USAJOBS.gov, the U.S. government’s job portal, and identify your options for applying. (You can also find vacancies through the general search option on the USAJOBS homepage.) Visit USAJOBS and select “U.S. Citizens” if you are a citizen who currently does not work for the federal government, or select “Federal Employees” if you currently work for the federal government. Search for vacancy announcements by keywords that might describe the position you want, such as job title, occupational series, or a specific technical skill. Considering occupations by college major may give you some ideas. Filter the results based on your preferences, such as agency, location, and salary. (See illustration below.) You may select these criteria from the start with the “Advanced Search” tool. You may also create automated job searches compiling daily, weekly, or monthly results.
Select the Vacancy Announcements That Interest You Most.
You may begin the application right away or save the vacancy announcement for later. To make the most of your time in applying for jobs, however, it’s a good idea to fully understand what a vacancy announcement is telling you about the position.
Decoding Vacancy Announcements
Most openings for federal jobs are advertised through a vacancy announcement at USAJOBS. The announcement describes the position and its duties, along with the requirements for applying. For some people, making sense of the announcement is the first obstacle to applying. For example, announcements use terms, such as job series and grade, with which you may not be familiar. Learning how to read these announcements can help you target the jobs that interest you most. n
Defining The Summary Fields
Vacancy announcements are divided into five different sections, which are represented by five tabs at the top of the webpage. The first tab, titled “Overview,” shows the job title, hiring agency, and job announcement number. The Overview includes other important information, such as salary range, promotion potential, and duty location. Salary range. This indicates the lowest and highest salary the position offers. Entry-level applicants usually start at the low end of this range. Applicants who have more education or experience than the position requires may negotiate for a higher starting salary, but the hiring agency is under no obligation to hire above the advertised starting salary. Open period. The open period, which varies by agency, gives the dates

The federal government classifies each job type with a 4-digit occupational series number that groups similar positions together. The grade shows the pay system and level for a position. This field shows the position’s work schedule. Most of the time, the work schedule is full time. But some jobs have part-time, seasonal, or intermittent schedules. Announcements for part-time positions often specify the number of hours per pay period; intermittent schedules vary. The position information also shows the type of appointment. nitely. With career-conditional appointments, workers may be eligible for permanent appointment after 3 years of continuous service. Temporary appointments generally last up to 1 year, but agencies can extend them for up to 2 more years if needed. Some announcements specify whether a vacancy is in the competitive or excepted service. Vacancies in the competitive service follow the hiring guidelines from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Vacancies in the excepted service, which include the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Reserve System, set their own procedures. (See box.) Promotion potential. This indicates the highest grade level for the position. Agencies may promote up to this level if a worker meets the requirements to advance. Some positions have no promotion potential to a higher grade level. To advance, workers must apply to a different job at a higher grade level and compete with other applicants for that position. Duty locations. This field states how many vacancies are available and where they are located geographically. Announcements may have one or more vacancies in a specific city or several vacancies throughout the listed locations. Who may apply. Federal agencies consider only those applicants who meet this section’s description. The federal government identifies applicant eligibility categories; almost all federal jobs require U.S. citizenship, for example. Agencies can set additional eligibility requirements. For example, an announcement might specify that applicants must already be federal workers or have special status, such as veterans’ preference. Security clearance. All federal workers must pass a background check, regardless of whether they will have access to sensitive information. The background check investigates issues related to crime, drug abuse, and more. Some positions, especially those in the excepted service, require a secret or top-secret security clearance. These clearances take months of investigation, but the scope varies. For example, a position handling money might require a look at financial records; a position dealing with classified documents might focus on travel and residential history. Supervisory status. This indicates whether a position involves managing people and overseeing others’ work. In the GS system, supervisory positions usually start at higher grade levels than nonsupervisory jobs. Job summary. This section gives an overview of the hiring agency or office and the position’s role within it. The description may include additional information, such as key requirements and the amount of travel involved.
Learning the Job’s Details
The details of the job make up the bulk of each vacancy announcement. Tabs for duties, qualifications and evaluations, benefits and other info, and how to apply allow you to jump to those topics in the announcement. Duties. The position’s main tasks are summarized here, often in a bulleted list. The description of these duties gives you a sense of what is expected on the job. Duties vary by position. Qualifications. The qualifications section describes the minimum level of education and work experience required for each of the position’s available grade levels, as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities the hiring agency prefers that applicants have. Generally, you may qualify with education, experience, or a combination of both. Higher grade levels may require specialized knowledge, such as an advanced degree or related experience at a lower grade level. In addition, this section explains how hiring agencies evaluate your application. For example, agencies may

consider your résumé, referrals, and answers to application questions—all of which help show how you’re qualified for the job. Benefits and other information. An overview of employee benefits and a link to more information appear here. Additional information on federal regulations and the hiring process is also provided. The information may discuss relocation expenses, reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities, and conditions of employment—such as registration with the Selective Service System. How to apply. This section explains how to apply to the position, including which documents are required, whom to contact for help, and what to expect after applying. This section often includes a link to the hiring agency’s application system, which is separate from USAJOBS. Required documents usually include a résumé and school transcripts. Some applicants, such as current federal employees and those claiming hiring preference, also must submit other records.
Mastering The Application Process
The federal government has streamlined the application process on USAJOBS in an attempt to reduce the time burden on applicants. But be patient: The entire hiring process may still take several months. Create and automate an account Before beginning your application, you must create a USAJOBS account. The registration process is easy. Click on “Create an Account,” in the tab at the topright corner of any page on the USAJOBS site. Use a valid email address and make a username. After you click on the button to agree to the terms of use, USAJOBS sends an automated email. Click on the confirmation link inside the email. Activate your account. Complete a form by providing some brief personal information, create a password that meets the security criteria, and answer three password questions. These questions help to reset your password in case you forget it. Check the box that says “I have read and understand the security tips” and click on the button to agree to the terms of use. You may now sign into your USAJOBS account. From within your account, you can save documents and information, which helps you to automate parts of the application process, including your profile, résumé, job searches, and documents. Profile. Complete your profile. This includes your contact information, hiring eligibility, employment preferences, and account information. You can also set or change your notification settings. For example, you may select to be alerted when there are changes to your application status or when a vacancy nears its closing date. Résumé. Build a new résumé or upload an existing one to have USAJOBS automatically include that information into the résumé builder. The résumé builder requires detailed information about your work experience, education, references, and more. You may create up to five résumés for different job applications and edit them at any time. Saved searches. This tool lets you save up to 10 job searches so you don’t have to repeat them every time you visit. As you would normally, complete the search criteria, such as keywords, salary, and location. Then, name your saved search and choose how often you want USAJOBS to email you a list of the vacancy announcements that match your criteria. Saved documents. You may upload and save up to 10 documents. Common documents include cover letters, transcripts, and forms proving hiring eligibility. Enter a name for the document, select the document type, choose the file, and click on the upload button.

All federal workers must pass a background check, regardless of whether they will have access to sensitive information. The background check investigates issues related to crime, drug abuse, and more. Additional Requirements
Most federal applications today include questionnaires, and some require short essays. And on USAJOBS, parts of the application are automated, such as completing repeat entries of your personal information. Questionnaires. Questionnaires vary in length, often including true-or-false and multiple-choice questions. These questions assess your qualifications in a position’s primary duties. For example, a vacancy for an administrative assistant may ask you to select your level of experience maintaining databases, editing clerical reports, and making travel arrangements. Be sure to carefully read the directions for each question. Some questions require you to choose more than one answer. Short essays. Short essays allow you to use real-life examples to support the skills and knowledge you cite having. Describe a challenging problem you faced, the steps you took to solve it, and the outcome of your actions. For example, you may discuss how, as a budget analyst, you used cost-benefit analysis to prepare estimates and develop an alternative that satisfies government regulations.

Along with submitting your application for a particular vacancy announcement, you must provide any supporting documents required in the announcement. Examples include your résumé, cover letter, and school transcripts. In composing your essays for a federal application, follow the same rules of writing that you would for any job: Use plain language that is grammatically correct. Include keywords from the announcement whenever possible. And remember to proofread your essays—or, better yet, have someone else review them for you.
Prepare Relevant Documents
Along with submitting your application for a particular vacancy announcement, you must provide any supporting documents required in the announcement. Examples include your résumé, cover letter, and school transcripts. Résumé and cover letter. A résumé and cover letter should detail your education and experience, if any. You can adapt your résumé and cover letter to each vacancy for which you apply. As mentioned previously, USAJOBS allows you to upload your résumé or complete an online résumé template. Because the template for multiple jobs is so easy to use, you may be tempted not to tailor your résumé to each job for which you apply. But customizing your résumé to a particular job, such as by highlighting your skills from most to least relevant and using keywords from the vacancy announcement, helps hiring officials connect the position’s duties to your qualifications. Every time you submit a résumé, you should consider including a cover letter. A cover letter serves as an introduction that shows your professionalism, explains your interest in the job, and matches your qualifications to the employer’s needs. And just as with a résumé, the cover letter should be tailored specifically to each job. When accompanying an application for federal jobs, your résumé may expand from

the single page recommended in the private sector to as many as 3 or 4 pages. Cover letters should not exceed 1 page. Transcripts. Vacancy announcements require school transcripts whenever you cite education to qualify for a position. You may use an unofficial copy of the transcript when first submitting the application. But be prepared to have your school mail an official transcript directly to the agency’s human resources department if you are selected for the position. Other. You must provide documents to support any claim you make. If you claim to be a federal worker, for example, you must attach a copy of your most recent SF-50 that shows your current job title, agency, grade level, and more. Other supporting documentation includes writing samples and proof of status, such as veterans’ preference.
Submit Your Application
You may edit and save changes to an application at any time before you submit it, up until the vacancy announcement’s closing date. But before you click the submit button, review your application and make sure you’ve included all required documents and information. An oversight would automatically disqualify you from consideration for the position. After you submit your application, you receive an automated email notification confirming your submission. You can track your application status at any time from your USAJOBS account. This status changes to reflect where your application is in the process, from presubmission to selection.
Final Steps
The final steps in the federal hiring process include evaluation, interview, and selection. Applicants may set their preferences in USAJOBS so that they receive automated email notifications at the end of each step. You may also check your application status online at any time. Evaluation. Hiring officials review applications to find the best qualified candidates and may select several to move along to the next stage. If no candidates are determined to be qualified, the agency may close out the process and repost a vacancy announcement. Interview. Hiring officials conduct interviews of the candidates who are best qualified. Agencies may not be authorized to pay for travel expenses, however, so telephone or video interviews are sometimes an option. Treat a federal interview as you would any other: Rehearse questions in advance, answer professionally, and follow up with a thank-you note. Selection. Hiring officials choose the best candidate for the position. A human resources representative contacts the candidate with a job offer, contingent on completing remaining requirements, such as a security clearance. If the candidate rejects the job, it’s offered to the next highest ranking candidate—and so on, until the vacancy is filled or the agency closes out the process. After you accept a job offer, your federal career starts with orientation and an oath of office. Congratulations!

Federal Hiring Authorities
Page 49
The federal government has a number of employment programs to attract candidates with specific backgrounds and skills. Called hiring authorities, these shortcuts to government employment may simplify the application process.
Pathways Programs
The Pathways Programs are three employment programs, each with its own eligibility requirements and rules. Participants who successfully complete a program may be transitioned into a permanent position. Internships Program. This program offers current students—from high school through the graduate level—full- and part-time employment. Agencies may hire interns for up to 1 year, or until students complete their educational requirements. Recent Graduates Program. People who have completed a qualifying certificate or degree from an accredited school within the previous 2 years may apply to available positions through this program. Qualifying degrees include vocational, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and professional degrees. This program lasts 1 to 2 years and includes mentorship and formal training. Presidential Management Fellows Program. This program is open to candidates who have completed an advanced degree, such as a master’s or professional degree, within the previous 2 years. After an assessment period, finalists apply to available positions, with each agency vying for the top candidates. Fellows work for 2 years in an excepted service position and receive senior-level mentorship and formal training.
Military and volunteer service
Veterans, military spouses, and Peace Corps and AmeriCorps volunteers may have more options to be considered for federal jobs than the typical applicant does, as described below. Veterans. Military veterans may be eligible for Veterans’ Preference, which assigns points toward their consideration for a federal job. To qualify, veterans must have an honorable or general discharge from active duty lasting more than 180 days. Veterans who have a service-related disability or were awarded a Purple Heart may receive additional points.

In addition, veterans may qualify for a few other special hiring authorities. For example, the Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment allows agencies to hire, outside the usual hiring (called “competitive”) process, eligible veterans to an excepted service position up to GS-11. Military spouses. Eligible military spouses who relocate because of their husband’s or wife’s active-duty assignment may receive eligibility for federal vacancies outside the competitive process. Volunteers. Peace Corps and AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers who successfully complete their service may have 1 year of eligibility outside the competitive process in applying for federal jobs.
Other
Some applicants, agencies, and positions are in the “excepted service” and follow different hiring procedures than those of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Disabilities. Applicants who have a disability may be able to seek appointment outside the competitive process to a position for which they are qualified. To be eligible, candidates must have a severe physical, cognitive, or emotional disability and must submit a certification letter from their State Vocational Rehabilitation Office. After 2 years, workers may qualify for a permanent appointment in the same position. Other excepted service. Excepted service agencies and departments include the U.S. Department of State, the United States Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress. Other agencies may have excepted service positions that require in-demand skills in critical occupations, such as lawyers. Vacancy announcements for excepted service agencies, departments, and positions are often available directly from the hiring agency’s website, rather than through USAJOBS. 7 Ways to Make Your Job Search Easier
L
osing a job can send you into a downward spiral of panic quickly. Bills still need to be paid and you still need to buy the essentials, like groceries and daily living supplies. If you are like most people, you probably did not prepare for this sudden life change and do not have much money in reserve. The panic and anxiety you feel may actually hinder the progress you make in searching for a job because these feelings could make you lose focus on the task at hand. It is time to take a deep breath. Losing a job is not the end of the world, although it sometimes seems that way. There are several things you can do to make searching for a job easier and alleviate a lot of unneeded stress along the way.
Explore All of Your Skillsets
The panic and anxiety you feel may actually hinder the progress you make in searching for a job because these feelings could make you lose focus on the task at hand. It is time to take a deep breath.

Today’s job market is full of competition and job seekers have to be open to new career paths. Take inventory of all your skills by writing them down on paper and you may just be surprised by the many things you are good at. After creating a list of your skills, you will be able to explore the job market in an organized manner and just may find a new niche for your expertise.
Be Creative in Your Search
Creativity is the way to get noticed. If you find a job on a website, newspaper ad, or even on a window posting that really interests you, search for the company’s address and either mail in the application and your resume or hand-deliver it with a smile on your face! Many people these days turn to employment websites for all of their job-hunting activities. Employment websites such as Monster and Indeed are excellent for brainstorming ideas of where to apply, but you can’t rely on them as your sole job-search tool. The problem with these websites is that they make applying for a job extremely easy and therefore a company could receive hundreds of resumes for a single job posting; it is easy to see how your resume could get lost in the shuffle. Another effective way to search for jobs is to create a list of the companies you want Alpine Electronics, Inc. is one of the world’s leading car audio, mobile electronics, and navigation systems companies.
