Top 10 Trends Shaping the Health Industry Today Working for the Federal Government Which Nursing Degree is Best for You? Giving Back & Giving Thanks to Veterans Employment for People with Disabilities

eoejournal Editorial Comment

“W

hen I’m having a stressful day, I have a someone to remind me that “It’s not the end of the world, until it’s the end of the world.” It’s a bit cheesy, I know, but it’s helpful to remember that the things that I think might be “the end of the world” will most likely work themselves out, and I don’t need to stress so much. It happened just last week. I thought I had missed a deadline and had lost sleep worrying about wasted time and money, when the very next day I was told I had additional time. “It’s not the end of the world until it’s the end of the world.”

There are lots of things going on in the world right now...good, bad and everything in between. From the presidential candidates debating on who can best run the country next to the bombings in Paris and shootings in Kenya, the world is dealing with a lot. But it is not the end. It is our job to remember that and to do what we can to add good to our own worlds, our own communities—by being good and kind to our families, our friends and our coworkers.

Working for the Federal Government

T

he U.S. government needs a lot of workers to provide its many services. Federal workers carry out key government functions. For example, federal workers ensure food safety, investigate criminal activity, provide emergency care, and develop science and technology. Their work affects millions of people. As you might expect from an organization with so many important functions, the federal government offers a variety of careers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in May 2013, more than 2 million federal civilian workers were employed in 350 different occupations. Whatever your interests or skills, there is likely a federal job that suits you.

What is the federal government?

The U.S. government oversees the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The federal government is divided into three branches: legislative, judicial, and executive. These three branches comprise departments and agencies that are responsible for specific government functions.

Who works for the federal government?

According to data from the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey, the federal government employed just over 2 million civilian workers in May 2013. That’s about 1.5 percent of the nearly 133 million workers BLS counted in all industries in the United States. The Office of Personnel Management data show that the federal workforce is diverse, and the demographics are similar to that of the overall labor force. In 2013, men slightly outnumbered women, for example. More than one-third of federal employees were minorities, with Blacks making up the largest portion (18 percent) of these minority workers. And nearly 9 percent of federal workers have a disability.

Rewards

One of the biggest draws of federal work is the chance to make a positive difference, which workers say is a source of pride. Satisfaction often comes from knowing that they are helping and serving people in their roles as public employees. Another appeal to working for the government is job security. Many federal services—including national security, emergency response, and air traffic control—are essential and ongoing. For this reason, federal workers may feel they have greater job stability than private-sector employees. The federal government also offers benefits such as low-cost life insurance and paid vacation and sick leave that begin accruing on the first day of work. Some agencies allow flexible work arrangements, such as alternative schedules.

Challenges

For many workers, the biggest challenge of federal work is its bureaucracy: the sheer size of the federal government makes it difficult for agencies to act independently. The vastness of the government contributes to another commonly cited challenge: the complexity of the hiring process. Some people find the job descriptions and application procedures confusing, for example. And workers with technical skills often feel their career options are limited. Similar to many other organizations, federal agencies don’t control their own budgets. Spending is set by the President and Congress for the government as a whole. An agency’s ability to maintain or improve their operations, such as through updating equipment and supporting innovation, depends on the funding it receives. Despite the challenges, some federal workers feel the rewards of working for the public are worth whatever sacrifices they make to forego the private sector. Are you ready to join the federal workforce? Check Career Outlook in November for tips on how to get a federal job. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

SHOWING THANKS TO VETERANS – Giving Back – by Kathy Bohon

“T

hank you for your service.” Veterans everywhere appreciate hearing these words. But a simple statement of thanks is a woefully inadequate way to show gratitude when you consider what every service-member, including those who never see combat, has sacrificed and experienced for the benefit of you, your family, your neighbors, and your community. This Veterans’ Day, take a moment to reflect on the losses every veterans regularly endure and reciprocate with a meaningful gesture that will endure long after the holiday passes. When a young man or woman reports for military service, their first experience is that of leaving their family and friends behind for a minimum of two months while they complete training. For many, it is their first experience away from home, yet they are unable to pick up a telephone and call someone when they feel lonely, discouraged, or incompetent. It’s virtually guaranteed that they’ll have these feelings while they undergo the mental and physical challenges that transform them from a civilian into a warrior. After completing training, many report feeling unable to relate to their friends as they once did. They walk differently, speak in acronyms that peers don’t understand, and find it hard to empathize with their pals as they used to. They become accustomed to chipping in to care for their environments and communities. When it snows, they are commanded to shovel sidewalks that they may have never set foot on. They’re ordered to pick up litter and debris that others tossed to the ground. In short, they become responsible to and for the citizens they serve whether they get deployed or not. Those who are sent to combat zones face a plethora of health risks. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reports that more than twelve percent of combat vets suffer from PTSD in their lifetimes. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a lifelong, sometimes debilitating disorder with no known cure. Among civilians, fewer than four percent are afflicted with the condition. Other combat-zone affects impact many more of our heroes. Mysterious lung conditions, traumatic brain injuries, and depression are far more prevalent among veterans than they are in the general population.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge, the government ships them back home, wherever that may be, with no follow-up assistance. The transition to civilian life can be daunting, especially for service-members who served a single enlistment. Their friends have moved on, and they’ve left behind their military buddies. Their home cities have changed during their absence. They can file for unemployment while they search for a new job and home, but both unemployment and homelessness rates are higher among veterans than non-veterans. When you consider just how much a young person has sacrificed to protect our reasonably comfortable way of life, wouldn’t you agree that much more can be done to demonstrate our gratitude? This year, consider honoring our veterans in a way that will have a lasting effect.

1. R ead the United States Constitution, including its amendments.

Make it a point to understand the principles our veterans stand behind better than you do today.

2. Hire a qualified veteran.

You’ll appreciate their ability to take direction, be goal-oriented, and their attention to detail.

Hire a veteran. You’ll appreciate their ability to take direction, be goal-oriented, and their attention to detail.

3. C ommit yourself to spending an hour visiting a veterans’ nursing home twice a year–Veteran’s 6. Ask the people you do business with to support Day and Memorial Day. veterans. Every state has at least one veterans’ home. It might mean spending an entire afternoon devoted to the task, but that time is a small investment by comparison to the sacrifices they made for us, after all.

4. M ake a PayPal or paper check donation to Stop PTSD Now.

Based in Illinois, this non-profit organization is devoted to researching and developing treatment methods for post-traumatic stress disorder.

5. S et up an affordable monthly donation from your bank account to support a homeless shelter.

Your donations will help provide food and warm beds for the men and women who make sure we have the right to such necessities ourselves.

Ask the manager at your local grocery store to donate surplus food to a homeless shelter for Veterans’ Day. Invite your dentist to donate toothbrushes and toothpaste. Find out if your physician would offer periodic free exams for homeless veterans. Inquire whether your bank would place collection cans at the teller windows to collect funds to support your local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) or DAV (Disabled American Vets). If these companies can’t provide goods and services, perhaps they’d agree to make a donation. Making one of these Veterans’ Day gestures may put you on the receiving end of thanks the next time you meet one of America’s heroes. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

The Role of Industrial Engineers

I

ndustrial engineers focus on how to get the work done most efficiently, balancing many factors—such as time, number of workers needed, available technology, actions workers need to take, achieving the end product with no errors, workers’ safety, environmental concerns, and cost. To find ways to reduce waste and improve performance, industrial engineers first study product requirements carefully. Then they use mathematical methods and models to design manufacturing and information systems to meet those requirements most efficiently. Their versatility allows industrial engineers to engage in activities that are useful to a variety of businesses, governments, and nonprofits. For example, industrial engineers engage in supply chain management to help businesses minimize inventory costs, conduct quality assurance activities to help businesses keep their customer bases satisfied, and work in the growing field of project management as industries across the economy seek to control costs and maximize efficiencies. Work Environment Industrial engineers figure out how to manufacture parts or products or deliver services with maximum efficiency. Industrial engineers held about 223,300 jobs in 2012. Depending on their tasks, industrial engineers work both in offices and in the settings they are trying to improve. For example, when observing problems, they may watch workers assembling parts in a factory or staff carrying out their tasks in a hospital. When solving problems, industrial engineers may be in an office at a computer looking at data that they or others have collected. Industrial engineers may need to travel to observe processes and make assessments in various work settings. The industries that employed the most industrial engineers in 2012 were as follows: • Aerospace product and parts manufacturing 8% • Machinery manufacturing 8% • Architectural, engineering, and related services 6% • Motor vehicle parts manufacturing 6% • Management of companies and enterprises 6% • Industrial engineers must be able to work with other professionals to serve as a bridge between the technical and business sides of an organization. This requires being able to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Work Schedules

Most industrial engineers work full time. Hours may vary, however, depending upon the projects in which these engineers are engaged, and upon the industries in which the projects are taking place.

How to Become an Industrial Engineer

Industrial engineers must be able to work with other professionals. Industrial engineers must have a bachelor’s degree. Employers also value experience, so cooperative education engineering programs at universities are also valuable. Education

Industrial engineers need a bachelor’s degree, typically in industrial engineering. However, many industrial engineers have degrees in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering technology, or general engineering. Students interested in studying industrial engineering should take high school courses in mathematics, such as algebra, trigonometry, and calculus; computer science; and sciences such as chemistry and physics. Bachelor’s degree programs include lectures in classrooms and practice in laboratories. Courses include statistics, production systems planning, and manufacturing systems design, among others. Many colleges and universities offer cooperative education programs in which students gain practical experience while completing their education. A few colleges and universities offer 5-year degree programs in industrial engineering that lead to a bachelor’s and master’s degree upon completion, and several more offer similar programs in mechanical engineering. A graduate degree allows an engineer to work as a professor at a college or university or to engage in research and development. Some 5-year or even 6-year cooperative education plans combine classroom study with practical work, permitting students to gain experience and to finance part of their education. Programs in industrial engineering are accredited by ABET.

Important Qualities

Creativity. Industrial engineers use creativity and ingenuity to design new production processes in many kinds of settings to reduce use of material resources, time, or labor while accomplishing the same goal. Critical-thinking skills. Industrial engineers create new systems to solve problems related to waste and inefficiency. Solving these problems requires logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to the problems. Listening skills. These engineers often operate in teams, but they must also solicit feedback from customers, vendors, and production staff. They must listen to customers and clients to fully grasp ideas and problems the first time.

Math skills. Industrial engineers use the principles of calculus, trigonometry, and other advanced topics in mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting in their work. Problem-solving skills. In designing facilities for manufacturing and processes for providing services, these engineers deal with several issues at once, from workers’ safety to quality assurance. Speaking skills. Industrial engineers sometimes have to explain their instructions to production staff or technicians before they can make written instructions available. Being able to explain concepts clearly and quickly is crucial to preventing costly mistakes and loss of time. Writing skills. Industrial engineers must create documentation for other professionals or for future reference. The documentation must be coherent and explain their thinking clearly so that others can understand the information.

Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations

Licensure for industrial engineers is not as common as it is for other engineering occupations, but it is encouraged for those working in companies that have government contracts.

Advancement

Beginning industrial engineers usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers. In large companies, new engineers also may receive formal training in classes or seminars. As beginning engineers gain knowledge and experience, they move to more difficult projects with greater independence to develop designs, solve problems, and make decisions. Eventually, industrial engineers may advance to become technical specialists, such as quality engineers or facility planners. In that role, they supervise a team of engineers and technicians. Many industrial engineers move into management positions because the work they do is closely related to the work of managers. For more information, see the profile on architectural and engineering managers. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Dynamic Diversity By Edward Chenard

Holy Redeemer’s holistic approach to healing is unique among healthcare providers. Caring for the total person goes beyond the act of delivering excellent medical care. It involves meeting the emotional, spiritual and social services needs of those we serve.

I

was talking to a guy the other day who was telling me that more people of a certain ethic group should be hired by a certain company, for diversity. It should be pointed out that this ethnic group in question happened to be the one he is a part of. Having hired people myself I really started to wonder about this whole diversity question and what really is diversity when it comes to business settings? Yes we know people of various ethnic groups or skin color or even gender can be called diversity, but what really makes a person diverse, is it really just skin deep or more about diversity of thinking? I like to travel, mainly because I get to meet people I have no clue about how they live or what they consider the norm. It is fun because it is much like solving a puzzle with prizes along the way. Get it right and people usually are quite open. Being of a mixed background myself, the word diversity is not something I pick up just for the office, I live it daily. So when I hear that being part Latin makes me qualified for diversity, I really wonder, does it? When a company is looking for diversity, what kind of diversity counts? Shouldn’t how I think and the unique ideas I bring be the real measure of diversity? Diversity in the way we think counts the most. I go back to that great little cauldron of social experiments in business I call grad school. Where, I had to work with all kinds of people that would fit the traditional diversity definition. But when it came to thinking, most students could be considered a homogeneous group by the time they graduated regardless of where in the world they came from. Reason being, grad school is as much about what you learn as how you think. Since we learn the same, technically we would solve problems the same. In terms of solving business issues, the students had more in common with each other in terms of thinking, thus diversity in thought was very low, even thought diversity in terms of ethnic background was very high. This is important when it comes to hiring because if you hire based on ethnic diversity, the diversity you need, is not necessarily what you will get. The students will solve the problem pretty much the same because they have the same training. So if you were looking for new and fresh ideas, I would gamble that disappointment was the end result regardless of the cultural background of the student. Take for example, a job I had where I was brought in to shake things up, make big changes and get new ideas going. I was hired for diversity reasons, my diversity was in the way I think and approach problems and opportunities. My ethnic background wasn’t all that dissimilar from many team members, but where I grew up and how I grew up was, and that shaped how I think and approach challenges. My diversity in thinking is what helped shake things up. Did they always like this? No, some people like to do things that are comfortable and don’t like someone questioning them as to why they are doing what they are. But that is what was needed to get the ball rolling and get changes made. As a hiring manager it can be hard to know if you are getting the kind of diversity you need. It first starts by understanding what you lack. If you have an office full of Yes people, getting someone who challenges your ideas, respectfully, can be a form of diversity of thought. To find out, you need to get away from the usually interview waltz which I personally don’t find that helpful. I love to ask a candidate “how are you going to solve my company’s problems?” A great question to finding out how a person thinks and engages in situations presented to them. Get to know where they grew up, how they think and engage others and if their style is right for you. Now since the readership of this site is very international, you will have to check your local hiring laws to make sure you don’t cross the line and ask questions that can get you in trouble. In the end, diversity of thought is not about hiring someone based on background, but on individual contribution to the team. This kind of diversity hiring I believe will catch on when managers really put aside the cookie cutter hiring process and get down to answering what they really need and addressing the issues head on and solving them. Diversity of thought is the way to hire. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

T

echnology increases exponentially, making software developers an in-demand career. In fact, the demand is calculated to increase by 32 percent by 2018. Here are a few ways to become hired as a software developer: Unlike most other white collar professions, the software industry doesn’t require formal educational accreditation or degrees and certificates. However, you still need to have the same level of competency in coding in the various popular programming languages as those with college degrees. How can you separate yourself from applicants with degrees? Employers would rather hire an enthusiastic candidate over an overqualified one. Show your enthusiasm by showcasing projects you’ve completed at your leisure. Showing your potential employer that you like to code on a professional level in your spare time will score you points. If you’re unfortunate enough not to get the jobs you’ve applied for, you can still earn a sizable income doing freelance work. The nature of software engineering allows you to create programs and market them on Google Play and other sites. Software developers aren’t limited to coders. You can become a software developer without knowing how to code. Software developers also test, aesthetically design, and evaluate software. Thus, you can still be a software developer if you analyze the consumer demand and form blueprints for a potential program that will satisfy these needs. Additionally, you can test developed software for bugs and user and OS compatibility. That said, know that 80 percent of computer software developers have a four-year college degree. The good news is you don’t necessarily need a computer science or software engineering degree. You can become a software developer with a B.Sc. in Mathematics, for example. With a degree in Math you can use statistics and historical data to make demand forecasts concerning future user software needs. You might even get away with becoming a software developer with a B.A. in English. With this degree, you can craft dialogue and stories for video games. A graphic arts degree can land you a software developer position in the video gaming industry as well. You’d be designing characters and other visual aspects of the software. Software developers are in rising demand. You can become one without a college degree or formal education past a high school diploma. Degree holders in many diverse fields can be software developers, from in-game story writers to graphic design artists. However, a surefire way to land you a corporate software developer position is to get a degree where software coding is emphasized. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

A Bright Future of IT Work By Mary Beth Maxwell

T

he “gig economy,” the “on-demand economy,” the “sharing economy,” the “coordination economy,” the “digital matching economy”— whatever term we use, there’s a lot of talk about rapid technology-enabled changes in the nature of work. Spoiler alert: Will all of our jobs be replaced by apps? Unlikely. But we are living in an increasingly connected world, with incredible new tools and opportunities, commerce transacted on digital platforms and many of us dependent on the labor of a fragmented and transitory workforce. To be sure, the growth of new-model companies presents both challenges and opportunities for many American workers that we need to take seriously. Last week, as part of our series of policy forums spotlighting innovators who inform our work, we hosted several speakers for a provocative, inspiring discussion about how to make new technology platforms work better for everyone. The Institute for the Future is a nonprofit research organization that has been playing a leading role in exploring how to shape emerging technologies to serve social goals and the common good. We were joined at our forum last week by Marina Gorbis, IFTF’s Executive Director; Devin Fidler, IFTF’s Research Director who also directs the Workable Futures Initiative; and Natalie Foster, an IFTF Fellow who has founded and directed both Peers and Rebuild the Dream. As Secretary Tom Perez often says, we need to avoid false choices. Examples abound of businesses that are doing well by doing good. Innovation and technology are creating incredible value and new possibilities. We can of course have both innovation and creativity and standards that protect workers and consumers. This is about choices to be made now; we absolutely can shape win-win solutions if we gather the right people at the table and together design our future based on shared values and goals. Natalie Foster of IFTF also spoke about her experience as co-founder and Executive Director of Peers, an online community for gig economy workers. She brings the invaluable perspective of the 250,000 Peers members who drive for Uber and Lyft, host for AirBnB, deliver for Munchery, and do project work through Elance-oDesk. This is no traditional labor organization by any stretch, but these folks have found both community and a vehicle to raise the issues they care about and express their collective voice. One of the most promising examples of how to make a new-model platform work better for workers is the Fair Care Pledge, an exciting collaboration between Sheila Marcelo of Care.com and Ai-Jen Poo of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. At the forum, Sheila and Ai-Jen moved the conversation from theory to practice. By signing the Fair Care Pledge, individual domestic employers — those who hire people to work in their homes cleaning, cooking and caring for loved ones — agree to pay a living wage, provide paid time off and commit to basic standards. As part of their partnership with NDWA, Care.com is encouraging its 6 million-plus employer users to become fair and responsible domestic employers. Care.com also provides families with tools and resources to help them meet their obligations under the pledge. As Ai-Jen Poo noted, in this sector, technology is helping to make visible a huge segment of “gig” workers who have worked for decades in relative obscurity, without the protections of most of our labor laws. Technology empowers consumers both to find the services they need and to make more responsible choices. Technology empowers workers to have greater connection and voice. As our speakers this spring have underscored, new-model companies are springing up in industry after industry, and these platforms providing on-demand services or matching workers with consumers are taking different shapes in all sorts of new markets. Our challenges are many: How do we make it possible to do the right thing? How do we help new companies build positive design elements into the platforms and networks that will become standard in the future? How can we ensure workers previously excluded have access to new opportunities? We at the Labor Department are excited to be learning from and collaborating with these innovative thinkers. By engaging with forward-thinking business leaders, tech developers and worker advocates, we can imagine a bright future of work. Article provided by theU.S. Department of Labor

e know more patients than ever are covered by health insurance. We know emerging technologies, consumer demand and economic pressures are shifting healthcare into new models — models that will engage patients and put them back at the center of care. But how much will these forces noticeably change the healthcare landscape this year? PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Research Institute surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults, experts and clients to find out. They took a pulse on the top health industry issues for the coming year and presented their findings in a webinar last Thursday. Here are the top 10 issues of 2015, which were outlined in the webinar by Karla Anderson, partner, Pharmaceutical Life Sciences Practice, HRI Leader Ceci Connolly and HRI Director Ben Isgur.

1. Do-it-yourself healthcare.

By Kelly Gooch a

This year, the intersection of consumer desire and technological advancements will put “D.I.Y. healthcare” at the top of the agenda, PwC predicts. “Increasingly, consumers are taking charge of more of their own care,” says Ms. Connolly. Technology companies are ready to help this happen with the development of apps and mobile devices to track health metrics such as vital signs, medication adherence or even urinalysis. Based on HRI survey results, physicians are also starting to accept the technology. Nearly half of physician respondents said they would be comfortable using data from a mobile device to determine if a patient should be seen in person or prescribed medication, and 90 percent felt the apps and mobile devices would be important to their practice in the next five years, according to PwC’s HRI. “It’s a great opportunity for some of the new entrants who are developing some of these new products,” Ms. Connolly says. “They may also want to partner with traditional healthcare organizations such as providers to collaborate on the development and commercialization of some of these technologies.” At the Amarillo VA Health Care System, we strive to hire only the best! Working with and for America’s Veterans is a privilege, and we pride ourselves on the quality of care we provide. If you have what it takes, please consider applying for one of our available positions. You may view our announcements online and receive application materials at www.amarillo.va.gov. If you need additional information, please contact our Human Resources Management Service at (806) 355-9703, extension 7330. 2. M aking the leap from mobile app to medical device.

The mhealth app space is getting more and more crowded. The FDA will likely review more mhealth apps this year than ever before, Ms. Connolly said. Regulatory approval could give some apps a competitive edge in a crowded sector. The rush of new apps also means consumers will need a way to sort through all the available tools. “Consumers and providers looking out at this vast new world of products and apps available to them may benefit from something called a formulary, or app library, or pharmacy,” Ms. Connolly says. Jefferson, La.-based Ochsner Health System is one of the few systems in the U.S. that has already implemented its own app formulary. Dubbed the “O Bar,” it is a curated group of apps and devices for patients. Physicians are able to even write “prescriptions” for apps to help give patients apps for information and education, according to Ms. Connolly.

3. B alancing privacy and convenience.

y can learn a lot from the tors on how to balance privacy with data.

Approximately five million patients had their personal records compromised from data breaches last summer alone, Mr. Isgur says. These EHRs, which offer personal, medical, financial and insurance information, can go for up to $1,300 on the black market. “Healthcare organizations are going to have to keep an eye on both internal and external threats,” Mr. Isgur says. Yet as healthcare organizations strive to make data private, they must also consider their consumer, who could benefit from convenient data access. The healthcare industry can learn a lot from the financial and retail sectors on how to balance convenience and privacy with data, according to Mr. Isgur. Collaborations with experts across industries may help healthcare organizations develop better security strategies.

4. H igh-cost patients spark costsaving innovations.

“There is a very, very small percentage of people that cost our health system a lot of money,” Mr. Isgur says. The sickest 1 percent of patients generates 20 percent of U.S. healthcare spending, he notes, and dual eligibles are especially costly. Outpatient care that might cost $11,000 for the average Medicare patient each year costs roughly $23,000 for patients who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. “We also know there’s a laser focus in most healthcare organizations to try to reduce costs,” Mr. Isgur says. To do that, many organizations are trying to look at those populations and develop innovative care models. This year we will likely see health systems employ a variety of strategies, including delivering care in new settings, through telehealth and retail clinics, high-tech solutions like wearables and apps, and low-tech solutions like making sure diabetic patients have refrigerators to store their insulin.

5. Justifying the price of specialty medications.

Increasing stress on the healthcare system is leading many insurers and healthcare systems to control drug costs by limiting access to high-priced, specialty medications, Ms. Anderson says. Though cost has been an issue for many years, she expects insurers to raise the bar in 2015 for both patients and providers to access to these medications. “From the patient perspective, we’ve seen an increase in financial responsibility that continues year over year, and frankly is not changing,” she says. “It’s getting more significant as insurers move to coinsurance and larger copayments, looking for the patient to have more of a contribution to the cost of their drugs, more of a conscious decision about the need for the drug.” Patients will increasingly be a factor in decision making for drugs, she predicts. “Correspondingly, from the physician perspective, [insurers are] really looking for physicians to present a much more detailed, clinical profile of the patient to justify medical necessity, and in some cases, that’s extending all the way to the request for genomic data.”

Over the next five years, the supply of primary care nurse practitioners and physician assistants is expected to increase by 30 percent and 58 percent respectively. 6. Open everything to everyone.

Ms. Anderson says there is a shift beyond making data transparent solely for the sake of remaining compliant. Instead, manufacturers, regulatory agencies and prescribers are transforming the way data is shared with a greater sense of collaboration. For instance, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers are contributing clinical trial data sets to Project Data Sphere, The Yale University Open Data Access Project and other programs, according to PwC’s presentation. Ms. Anderson says she believes that a great deal of clinical data is never published based on the outcomes of different trials, initiatives or registries. “This movement to publish sort of the good and the bad and make things more transparent, I think, is clearly something we think is a top issue for this year,” she says.

7. Getting to know the newly insured.

More than 10 million adults have gained health coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to PwC’s presentation. Ms. Connolly says the insurance industry and provider community are trying to learn about this group in a short period of time. Additionally, primary care physicians, surgeons and other specialists have seen measurable increases in the proportion of Medicaid patients in expansion states, according to PwC. Ms. Connolly says hospitals and health systems in the states that have expanded Medicaid are seeing significantly different types of revenue figures, which are evidence of an increase in admissions and a reduction in uncompensated care debt. As far as implications, it makes sense for providers to contract broadly with insurers and help uninsured and underinsured enroll in coverage, she says.

8. Physician extenders see an expanded role in patient care.

Mr. Isgur says in 2015, they see extenders — such as nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and others — having an expanded role in patient care. He says many states have looked at this, and by the end of 2014, more than half of states were looking at scope of practice issues and who was going to do what as far as clinical duties. He says a larger number of extenders also is expected. Over the next five years, the supply of primary care nurse practitioners and physician assistants is expected to increase by 30 percent and 58 percent respectively, he says. “States will have to again visit and revisit their scope of practice laws,” Mr. Isgur says. One implication of this trend, he says, is that extenders initially may not slow growth in the cost of care as much as people think due to the demand for extenders, resulting in an increase in the cost of wages. However, that is expected to level out, he says.

9. Redefining health and well-being for millennials.

Ms. Anderson says as baby boomers retire, employers, insurers and health systems are looking for new ways to engage, attract and retain millennials. “Employers will have to really pivot to better meet the expectations of this group of millennials…,” she says. “It will require them to reorient strategies from the concept of wellness to one of well-being.” By 2030, millennials will make up 75 percent of the U.S. workforce, according to the PwC presentation.

10. Partner to win.

Ms. Anderson says in this new hypercompetitive environment, people are thinking differently about how they collaborate and with whom they collaborate. According to the PwC presentation, successful companies that want to thrive “will work together on innovative products and services.” Ms. Anderson says an analysis of the Fortune 50 healthcare companies found that about 40 percent pursued new healthcare partnerships last year. “It’s no longer enough to partner at a peripheral level…You really have to think critically about who you partner with,” she says. hough it has been high in recent years, the current unemployment rate in United States is 6.9%. This number means that for most Americans, opportunities for employment are available, if people choose to pursue them. Currently, 64% of the adult population of the United States is employed, and a large portion of those who are not employed are retired. For individuals with disabilities, finding employment can be much more difficult. According to the US Department of Labor, only 18% of people with disabilities are currently employed. Some of these people are too old to work; some of these people have disabilities that are too severe to allow them to work, but a large portion of people with disabilities are willing and able to work in some capacity. What are the barriers to employment for people with disabilities? Is lack of desire to work an issue? Do these individuals struggle with personal limitations? Perhaps lack of education or lack of opportunity is the problem. No matter what the cause, the unemployment of people with disabilities has become an epidemic that our society cannot afford to ignore. Solutions currently exist for each of these potential barriers to employment. Both people with disabilities and society as a whole bear responsibility for the current state of affairs. Both people with disabilities and society as a whole must make changes to correct the situation. Many individuals with disabilities struggle with lack of desire to work. This lack of desire could come because of many different factors. Having a body or mind that will not respond in the way he or she desires may teach an individual that there is no point in striving to achieve. An individual may feel that someone else will always be there to care for him or her. A culture that stresses the value of work is the solution to these problems. For too long, the emphasis of American society has been on obtaining things, without first working for them. The message should be that work must come before reward, and that delaying gratification is a good thing. This attitude is beneficial to anyone, not just people with disabilities. By definition, people with disabilities struggle with physical or mental limitation. Assistive technology can allow almost anyone, no matter how severe their disability, to use a computer. Not everyone has the mental capacity of Stephen Hawking, but given the opportunity, nearly everyone can contribute to society through communication. Job seekers with mental disabilities can benefit from on-the-job coaching or mentoring. Many people with disabilities need some sort of job modifications to thrive in a work environment, but these modifications are typically minor and inexpensive. In addition, money businesses spend on accommodations for these individuals are tax deductible.

Individuals with disabilities are accustomed to overcoming difficulties in their personal lives; these problem-solving skills can translate into innovative thinking in the work environment. In the United States, lack of education is not usually the primary obstacle standing between a person with a disability and gainful employment. Most people with disabilities qualify for State or Federal Vocational Rehabilitation programs that cover the cost of higher education. A culture that values education for all who seek it is a powerful motivator. America is known as the “Land of Opportunity,” but are these opportunities open to people with disabilities? The best way to assure they are is to establish the value of employees with disabilities to businesses. Individuals with disabilities are accustomed to overcoming difficulties in their personal lives; these problem-solving skills can translate into innovative thinking in the work environment. with disabilities can often work part-time while still receiving government sponsored healthcare. Employers offering part time opportunities to these individuals may save money on benefits that they would normally offer to full-time employees. Finally, businesses that compete for government contracts may have diversity targets they are required to meet. Appropriate representation of people with disabilities may allow these organizations to gain a competitive edge. People with disabilities have historically been underrepresented in the labor force, but they represent an enormous, untapped resource. In difficult economic times, wellinformed business owners cannot afford to ignore the potential impact that these workers can make on an organization’s image, productivity and bottom line.

Can an Online MBA Compete with a Traditional Degree?

O

By Ronald Corker

nline learning is an important tool for students to earn MBA degrees. This degree qualifies students for increased responsibly within a firm. Students choose an online MBA for several reasons, and employers are increasingly accepting online degrees as equal to a classroom education. Labor reports cite steady career growth for positions requiring MBA degrees, and online classes help employers fill these executive positions while helping job candidates advance their careers.

An Overview of the MBA Program

Students can earn their MBA degree after completing a business bachelor’s degree program. The course offering provides students with academic training in preparation for management positions. Students can choose to focus their training in several areas such as:

· Customer Relationship Management · Entrepreneurship · Finance · Healthcare · Information Technology · Logistics · Marketing and Sales · Operations · Production Management · Project Management · Risk Management

MBA degrees give prospective employees an advantage over job competitors with lesser degrees. To pursue this career choice, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) administers the GMAT, a test students must pass to attend a postgraduate business school. Almost 240,000 potential entrants took the test in 2012.

BLS MBA Career Outlook

MBA degrees are a popular learning path; Master of Business graduates make up almost ten percent of advanced degree program graduates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasts that the demand for business managers will increase as the international business market grows, and in 2016, management analysts will make up one of the top ten most common occupations with a median salary of almost $70,000 per year. The BLS expects this growth to evolve from a host of emerging financial and reporting legislation, with a demand for 450,000 accountants by 2016. With these demands placed on businesses, MBA degrees are essential to compete in a multifaceted business environment. The BLS also states that many workers who fill management positions do not have the education to fulfill the duties of top executives in the new economy. These executives have climbed the corporate ladder using their work ethic; however, these on-the-job experiences do not prepare them for new economy challenges. Additionally, the Bureau states that employees who advance without MBA degrees fill high-priority positions at a pay rate lower than degree holding employees, and the demand for qualified upper-management is so high, businesses and the government partner with business schools to create talent pools to fill projected staffing needs. Although the demand for top executives will grow at pace with the economy, competition in the field will remain stiff.

The Popularity of the Online Classroom

There are several reasons more students are turning to online classrooms to earn their MBA degree. Online study requires that students are capable of working independently, one of the traits required by upper management. Changing regulations also allow working students to use educational expenses as a tax write-off. Online classes provide a better learning experience for students. They do not have to compete with others for the professor’s attention. Instead, online students can post questions when necessary without concern for interrupting the lecture flow, which is difficult n a classroom setting. These factors make online learning an attractive medium.

Online Degrees: the New Status Quo

Online learning is now considered a credible learning avenue by education boards and employers, and for students pursuing MBA degrees. This learning avenue has proved rewarding Human resource managers now consider online degrees equal to degrees from brick and mortar institutions, and many Ivy League students are pursing online learning because of the medium’s flexibility. Many online classroom participants are already actively engaged in the workforce, and these classes allow employees to advance their degrees while maintaining employment. Today’s online learning environment also allows students to network nationwide with previously unreachable contacts. These factors make online learning more popular with employers and students. With the demands placed on executives continuing their education, more firms are acknowledging the online learning’s value. Students and employees can use this tool to gain employment and fast-track to upper management. The medium’s flexibility makes it a popular choice that is increasingly recognized by firms. MBA degrees help career seekers surpass their competitors and in this steadily growing discipline.

10 ADVANTAGES TO ONLINE LEARNING • Variety of programs and courses • Lower total costs • More comfortable learning environment • More interaction and greater ability to concentrate

–Basic Nursing Degrees –

Which Is Best For You?

So

By Travis Van Slooten

you’ve decided on a career in nursing, but you don’t quite know where to start. What type of nursing degree is best for you? What type of nursing school should you go to? Basically, there are only two types of nursing degrees: one in Licensed Practical Nursing which is also referred to as Licensed Vocational Nursing in some areas, and another in Registered Nursing. The LPN degree can be a good starting point for your nursing career. You need a high school diploma or GED to be accepted into an LPN school. Many community colleges and technical schools offer LPN degrees. Not many four-year state universities offer them. Some private, for-profit schools in your area probably offer them as well; Galen, Kaplan, Keiser, and the University of Phoenix are all examples of these types of schools. LPNs earn less than registered nurses and work under the direction of registered nurses. Some hospitals will not hire LPNs and only hire registered nurses. If you want to progress into a managerial position as a nurse, you will want to become a registered nurse. Of course, being an LPN first is a good step towards earning that RN degree. You can already complete an LPN degree in about a

year, get a job, and then take online LPN to RN programs while working. This means that you’ll already be earning while studying to become a registered nurse. Plus, some employers may offer to help defray the cost of your continuing education, provided you stay with them for a number of years Another way to do this is by getting an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, which takes two years, or a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, which takes four years. These are available at many two-year community colleges and four-year private and state colleges. Many private for-profit career schools are opening up these days which offer two-year Associate’s Degree in Nursing Programs. Once you get an Associate’s Degree in nursing you are a Registered Nurse. If you want to earn more money and increase your hiring potential, you can working while taking classes part-time to get a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing. Often your employer will pay for some or all of your educational expense. If you want to be a manager, you will most likely have to have a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, and many facilities will require a master’s degree in nursing. So which route is best? It all depends on your

circumstances. Would you like to earn a degree faster and start working right away?. An LPN degree is the shortcut to a healthcare-related degree. However, if you know that you want to progress further in your career, possibly into a management position, and you have the time, money and ability to go to school for two to four years, you may want to consider obtaining a degree in registered nursing instead. GETTING BACK TO WORK:

Returning to the Labor Force After an Absence

W

By Sara Royster

hile serving an 18-year prison sentence, James Whitfield completed a paralegal training program. He was determined to work in law upon his release—but was rejected by every firm he applied to. “No one was willing to take a chance on me because of my criminal record,” he says. Whitfield decided that he didn’t want other ex-offenders to experience the same kind of rejection he had faced. So he began the Ex-Offenders Resource Network, a nonprofit organization that helps people with criminal backgrounds find employment. “I was determined to help others find work, since I couldn’t,” he says. “I wanted to talk to employers and educate them about working with ex-offenders and show them that, by giving people a second chance, they could change people’s lives.” Incarceration is one of many reasons that people who previously worked are temporarily absent from the labor force. Some have left to raise children or to care for another family member. Others lost their job or had to leave because of sickness or disability. Still others aren’t in the labor force for different reasons, such as serving in the military. But no matter why they are absent, many of these workers plan to return to the labor force at some point. For prospective workers in all these circumstances, returning to the labor force can be intimidating and difficult. Knowing what to expect and what to do can help make the process easier. This article provides information about getting back to the workforce for those who have been absent.

ASSESS YOURSELF

Maybe you’ve been out of work for a few months, or perhaps it’s been years. Either way, it’s helpful to take stock of your skills and interests, experience, and goals. Start by assessing where you are in your career. “An absence from the workforce is a good time to reevaluate and decide what you really want,” says career blogger Marc Miller.

IDENTIFY SKILLS AND INTERESTS

important thing is to know thyself,” says Miller. Think about the things that interest you: What do you like to do in your spare time? They can be broad pursuits, such as music, or specific activities, such as building and restoring motorcycles.

READY YOUR RESUME

Before you’re ready to apply for jobs, you should prepare a general outline of your skills and experience. To start building your resume, think about how you spent your time while you were out of the workforce. What were you doing? What experience and skills did you develop that could be useful in a work setting? These may include “soft” skills, such as interpersonal-communication and problem-solving abilities, that employers find desirable for many jobs. If you already have a resume, update it to include the experience you gained and skills you honed while out of the workforce. If you don’t have a resume, start by making a list of all the jobs you’ve had, what you accomplished at each, and what skills you developed from those accomplishments. Include any volunteer experience, education, and memberships in professional associations, clubs, or religious organizations. For people who’ve taken time off from the labor force, the functional resume format, which focuses on skills, is usually more effective than a chronological resume, which focuses on work history. List all the skills you have, and give concrete examples of how you’ve used each in a professional setting. For more information about resume formats, visit your local library or career center. Think about how your work history relates to what you see yourself doing in the future: are there any crucial skills that you are missing and may need to acquire before applying for work again? If so, make note of them as you start thinking about your career goals. References can be especially important if you have been out of the workforce for a while. Career counselors say that prospective employers want to talk to someone who can vouch for your skills and work ethic, so make sure that your references are former colleagues who can speak about the quality of your work. Contact three people with whom you had a good working relationship, and ask their permission to use them as references. Get their current employment information, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Formal assessments can help you determine your skills and personality type, and some assessments identify occupations that match those traits. “The best assessments compare your personality traits with similar traits of people who are doing things they like, to see if that might be a good fit for you,” says Miller. In addition to helping you identify your skills, many assessments focus on recognizing interests. you need to do everything all at once. “The reentry process can be overwhelming, so it’s important to break it down into small, achievable goals,” says career counselor Lisa Severy. “These can be daily goals, or weekly, or any span of time. The important thing is that you start making progress.” When setting goals, think about the future. What would you like to be doing years from now? But also consider the past. “Reflect on your career,” says Miller. “Think about when you felt most fulfilled, and why. This can indicate the type of work or work environment you should be seeking.”

In addition, counselors can teach you jobseeking strategies, as well as help with resumes and cover letters, interviewing tips, and networking etiquette. LEARN ABOUT THE JOB MARKET

Depending on how long you’ve been out of the workforce, you might discover that much has changed. “It’s important to research the marketplace and see what’s out there,” says career coach Barb Garrison. “Don’t assume it’s the same as when you were last in it.” The Internet is an important research tool (see box), especially for learning about what may have changed in the workplace. For example, some job tasks previously performed by workers are now done by technology. Other jobs may have increased skill requirements. And new occupations may have emerged that did not exist before. Consult references that give you an idea of what kinds of occupations there are and what they involve. Consider your interests, skills,

experience, and goals, as well as other factors that may be important to you, such as a preferred work schedule. Once you have enough background information, start reading local job postings. Get an idea of what types of workers employers are looking for and the skills and education required to do the job. And ask people you know about their jobs. Find out what skills they use, what their workplaces are like, and what education or training they needed to get hired. Consider doing informational interviews to learn more about occupations or specific jobs. “Informational interviews will help you narrow down what kinds of roles are suited for you and what types of companies you are interested in,” says Alvarado. To set up an informational interview, call local employers and ask to speak with a worker who is doing a job that interests you. “People love to talk about themselves,” says Miller. “If you ask people for 15 minutes of their time, they’ll often give it to you.” Miller also recommends asking workers if they know anyone else you could talk to or if they know any companies that are hiring. Making contacts can help to develop a network that you may be able to tap for help in your job search. You’ll also want to familiarize yourself with the job market in your area. Check job listings, and if you need to beef up your skills, look for available education or training opportunities. Above all, be proactive. “Waiting is not a job search strategy,” says Miller. “Companies hire people without waiting to post a job. Go ahead and get in touch.”

GET WHAT YOU NEED

What do you need to do to get the job you want? You may have to get more education or training to update your skills. Or you might need some work experience. Most occupations typically require some type of education, experience, training, or other credential for entry-level jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics provides this information; in addition, professional associations often can tell you what type of education is needed in a particular occupation. For example, some occupations require a degree, such as an associate’s degree to become a dental hygienist. Others need a professional certification, such as those for appraisers and assessors of real estate. Still others require national or state-level licensure in order to work, such as a license for hairstylists. If you need additional education or training to enter an occupation that interests you, there are several ways to get it: Apprenticeships provide a chance to earn money while getting technical training and hands-on experience in an occupation. Formal apprenticeships are registered with the U.S. Department of Labor in more than 1,000 occupations, including animal trainers, electricians, and nursing assistants.

Get an idea of what types of workers employers are looking for and the skills and education required to do the job. Career centers commonly offer free job-readiness courses in workplace skills such as customer service, computer basics, and teamwork. Some centers offer information about the types of training available locally. Others provide free or low-cost training and certifications in a variety of areas, such as typing speed and forklift operation. Community colleges offer classes that may lead to a certificate, to an associate’s degree, or toward transfer credits to a 4-year college or university. You should research job placement rates and other factors to find schools that are a good fit. If you need experience, consider volunteering. “Ask people you know if they need help with anything or if they know anyone who does,” says Garrison. “It can be volunteering, project work, part-time work, or filling in for someone.” Contact organizations in industries that interest you, and ask if they accept volunteers. No matter what type of tasks are involved, volunteering can help you build skills and get a sense of what the work is like. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics
