hether you’re searching for a job or looking for a promotion, your character is being considered. Character—your mental and moral qualities distinctive to you— makes a difference. An honest employee who does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, not only shows good character for himself, but these positive acts have a tendency to spread to other employees. The workplace is a network of people who must rely on and trust each other. Trustworthy employees treat their co-workers with fairness and respect. They pull their own weight and pitch in to help meet deadlines. High morale amongst coworkers is contagious. These attitudes can heighten your day-to-day experience of going to work, but it can also enhance the reputation of the entire company. So, occasionally, it is good to test your own character at work and consider how it might affect your coworkers. For example, how many times have you used the internet and company time to check posts on Facebook or Twitter? Used the phone, fax, or photocopier for personal use? Or took that one, teeny, tiny box of pens or blank CDs that no one will miss? Certainly not the crimes of the century, but time theft, “cyberloafing,” and flat-out stealing adds up. Keep yourself in check. It matters for you, your co-workers, and ultimately the company you work for. Lisa Petty, Editor Equal Opportunity Employment Journal

he story of Black History Month begins in Chicago during the late summer of 1915. An alumnus of the University of Chicago with many friends in the city, Carter G. Woodson traveled from Washington, D.C. to participate in a national celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of emancipation sponsored by the state of Illinois. Thousands of African Americans traveled from across the country to see exhibits highlighting the progress their people had made since the destruction of slavery. Awarded a doctorate in Harvard three years earlier, Woodson joined the other exhibitors with a black history display. Despite being held at the Coliseum, the site of the 1912 Republican convention, an overflow crowd of six to twelve thousand waited outside for their turn to view the exhibits. Inspired by the three-week celebration, Woodson decided to form an organization to promote the scientific study of black life and history before leaving town. On September 9th, Woodson met at the Wabash YMCA with A. L. Jackson and three others and formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). As early as 1920, Woodson urged black civic organizations to promote the achievements that researchers were uncovering. A graduate member of Omega Psi Phi, he urged his fraternity brothers to take up the work. In 1924, they responded with the creation of Negro History and Literature Week, which they renamed Negro Achievement Week. Their outreach was significant, but Woodson desired greater impact. As he told an audience of Hampton Institute students, “We are going back to that beautiful history and it is going to inspire us to greater achievements.” In 1925, he decided that the Association had to shoulder the responsibility. Going forward it would both create and popularize knowledge about the black past. He sent out a press release announcing Negro History Week in February, 1926.

New Year Resolutions You Can’t Afford to Neglect Y By Celeste Stewart

ear in, year out, resolutions come and go. Fitness centers see an immediate upsurge in activity in January as the masses decide that now’s the time to finally get into shape. But it’s business as usual as soon as the resolve wears thin. As the credit card bills begin arriving in late January, New Year’s vows to improve finances give way to a feeling of hopelessness. How can you possibly expect to get ahead when you’re drowning in debt? This year, be proactive and forget the “all or nothing” New Year’s resolution. Instead of jumping into a rigid five days per week fitness regime, take steps toward improving your health by choosing realistic, attainable goals. You know that you went overboard with your holiday spending and you know that the next credit card bill will be a whopper. Brace yourself. Instead of allowing that bill to weaken your resolve to improve your finances, use it to motivate yourself. Resolving to improve your finances is smart but it involves action. Simply writing “improve finances” on a list of New Year’s resolutions won’t do. Just as you must exercise and eat less in order to lose weight, you must also get moving in order to get your finances in shape.

While there are dozens of steps you can take to improve your finances, the following five resolutions are ones that you can’t afford to neglect. The first two resolutions are steps you can take right now while your resolve is at its peak. Spend a few hours on these and you’ll only have three steps remaining to consider throughout the year. Write your will – Consumer Reports estimates that nearly 66% of people do not have a will. Even if you don’t have much of an estate, writing a will is important, especially if you have children. Who do you trust to appoint a guardian for your children? You or the state? A will is a tool that you can use to appoint your own guardian for your children as well as designate the distribution of your assets. If you die without a will, the state will determine who gets what and who will take care of your children. Writing a will is simple and not as depressing as you might think. In fact, it is empowering because you are taking charge of a situation according to your wishes. Numerous software programs are available to assist you in making out a simple will that is completely legal in your state. Review your insurance – If your house were to burn down tomorrow, would you

have enough insurance to fully rebuild it, replace all of its contents, and provide for temporary living expenses in the interim? Are you sure? If you were to get into an automobile accident with a high-end luxury car and it was your fault, would you have enough insurance to cover the cost of repairs? If the other driver sued you for hundreds of thousands of dollars because he was left a paraplegic, would your insurance cover it? Do you have enough life insurance to provide for your family if you were to die unexpectedly? Take a look at all of your insurance policies and make sure you have adequate coverage in all areas. As you progress through life, your insurance needs change which is why it’s important to review your coverage periodically. You may find you can reduce coverage in some areas or may need to increase it in others depending on how your situation has changed since the last time you reviewed your policies. While you’re at it, make sure to double check the beneficiary of each policy. Is this person still alive? Is this the person you want to receive the funds should you die? Many people forget to re-designate beneficiaries after a divorce. START SAVING NOW – Do you have a retirement plan or IRA? If so, are you contributing the maximum amount? If not, increase your contribution. You’ll feel a pinch at first but soon, you’ll grow used to it, especially if you can have your contribution taken directly out of your paycheck. If you don’t have either one, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic contributions up to the annual limit. The sooner you get started saving, the more you can take advantage of compound interest. Do you have an emergency fund? What would you do if you lost your job suddenly? How would you pay the bills? What if you need a new furnace in the middle of winter? How will you pay for it? An emergency fund gives you peace of mind and funds that you can use should an emergency affect your pocketbook. Plus, instead of paying interest by using a credit card, your emergency fund can earn you interest if you place it in a high interest savings account. REDUCE YOUR CREDIT CARD DEBT – Take a look at the whopper of a credit card bill, in particular the line that details the finance charges. How much money are you paying for the convenience of instant gratification? As long as you have an unpaid balance, you’ll be paying finance charges every single month. Now look at the minimum payment due. It may be surprisingly low in contrast to the amount you owe. If you’re in the habit of paying the minimum due, you’ll never get ahead. It’s time to break the hold the credit card company has on you and start paying down your credit card balance. In fact, if you’re paying double digit interest rates, it’s in your best interest to put as much money as you can toward paying off your credit cards. In addition to paying down the balance, a crucial step in reducing your credit card debt is to stop using the card in the first place. This means delaying gratification. But those black leather boots are so cute! Not so fast. They’re cute but ask yourself if you’re willing to go into debt for them. If they are simply a must-have item, try an old-fashioned approach: save up for them. IMPROVE YOUR CREDIT SCORE – Those with poor credit pay more for loans but did you know that your credit score is used to determine other rates? The insurance industry uses credit scores when determining how much to charge you for insurance. If you’re struggling financially and have a low credit score, you’ll feel the pinch even more in higher insurance rates. In addition, employers also look at credit scores when evaluating job candidates. Credit scores serve as a gauge of your responsibility. If you can’t handle your finances, how are you going to handle other duties? Now, not only are you suffering financially and paying high insurance rates, you’re going to have a tough time landing a higher paying job! Do yourself and your future financial situation a favor by working to improve your credit score. Pay your bills on time religiously. Don’t apply for store credit simply to get that 10% one-time discount. Pay down your credit card balances. If you’re headed to the gym this January with a fresh resolve to get into shape, you fully expect to hear the fitness trainer say “no pain, no gain.” The same is true as you work to fix your finances. It will be painful. You will need to make sacrifices in how you spend your money. But just as you’re willing to sweat for a few hours each week, if you put your mind to it, you can take charge of your finances. Article provided by www.constantcontent.com

6 Easy Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Interactive and Engaging

L

By Wanda Marie Thibodeaux

inkedIn is now considered one of the best--if not the best--professional networking sites available. Succeeding on the site, however, requires an outstanding profile, similar to how you must create a phenomenal resume offline. You’ll likely find you have better luck and more views if you work toward making your profile more interactive and engaging. These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg on how to do it.

Include samples of your work.

People who are viewing your LinkedIn profile to get an idea of whether to work with you are going to want to see examples of what you’re capable of doing. Without these examples, viewers have a harder time getting a fully well-rounded concept of your skills and expertise. Put a handful of links on your profile so viewers can download documents or other media such as videos of you presenting.

Embed slideshows, pictures or video.

Embedded slideshows, pictures or video can double as work samples, but they also can give information, and they often do so incredibly quickly. The more valuable your profile is as a resource, the more views it will get. These kinds of elements paint a strong picture of your personality and goals, as well. One important consideration here is that you want to make sure that the viewer maintains control of the media when your page loads. For instance, don’t have a video start automatically. Force a viewer to look at something or turn it off and they’re much more likely to get frustrated and just click away.

Update your status frequently.

Your LinkedIn status is not the place to tell everyone you just had the best cup of coffee in your life. (You can use Twitter or Facebook for that.) It is, however, the perfect spot for you to announce that you’ve just completed work on Project B, or that you are looking forward to starting a new training session. You even can give a shout out to others who have helped you or who otherwise might deserve some recognition from you. Anything that gets you pumped about your work or shows off career achievements or goals is potentially status worthy, but always make sure that your language

remains professional. By updating, you’ll help people feel as though you are more present and confirm that you’re active on the site.

Link your profile with your professional blog.

Some experts recommend that, with an emphasis on staying current, you update your LinkedIn profile as often as once a day. If this is a little too much of a hassle for you, an easy way to show your connections that you are active is to link your profile and blog together. This way, whenever you update the blog, your LinkedIn connections will know, even if you don’t actually go back to the LinkedIn site.

Join groups.

LinkedIn allows you to join multiple groups at a time, which connects you to people with similar interests, skills or objectives. When you join, don’t just “like” what you see from others. Offer comments and, where appropriate, make invitations or links to helpful information.

Write in first person.

A huge purpose of LinkedIn is to make connections. Subsequently, the third-person approach that is standard on a traditional resume simply won’t cut it--instead of attracting viewers, it will keep them at a distance, making them feel like you’re colder and less approachable. The trick here is to avoid letting the use of “I” turn your content too conversational. Stay professional at all times and stay focused on the objectives you have. You also want to concentrate on keeping all your content concise and actionable.

Conclusion

A hum-drum LinkedIn profile simply will not get you noticed. To succeed, you have to take advantage of the social aspects of the site and keep your eyes set on connecting. Tricks like using first person, updating frequently, joining groups, offering links, embedding media and including samples all are ways to encourage two-way communication and interaction. You can choose which of these approaches to use based on your unique goals, personal tastes and the impression you want to give from the profile. Article provided by www.constantcontent.com

Why would you want to be anonymous when you view other people’s profiles on LinkedIn? by Bruce Bix

1) You are a recruiter searching for talent. You don’t want the talent to know you are viewing their profile for several reasons. The profile you are viewings doesn’t match all your qualifications. You don’t want the person bugging you for information about the position and who the company is. 2) You are in sales and you need a little business intelligence about a company or person(s) in the company. You need contact information because you want to be prepared for your meeting with the business executive. 3) You are just curious about other people or their profiles. 4) You are in job search. If you are in job search use the “Account and settings link, scroll down to review. On your profile settings is the option for “Select what others see when you have viewed their profile.” The last selection is “Totally Anonymous” Be like a ninja to view a hiring manager or recruiters profile to learn more about them. Where they went to school, look into LinkedIn’s Alumni section, check their summary to see what they are about view their accomplishments. View the groups they are in and if possible join the groups to learn more about the recruiter. Try a guerrilla strategy and if it is a hiring manager, view their recommendations, find out what they value in people they work with or they are managers of. Also view the recommendations they receive to find out what kind of manager or boss they are to work f Use a keyword search on LinkedIn to find out about your keywords. Where do you rank. Check out the profiles of others with your keywords (ANONYMOUSLY) view their profile. This will show you what keywords they use and where they have them on their profile. So what you want to do is add the keywords to your profile in the exact same sections on your profile. Concerns may be raised if you are involved in or associate with individuals committing an act intended to overthrow or alter the U.S. Government by force or unlawfully preventing others from exercising their Constitutional rights. These concerns will be mitigated if you are unaware of the individual’s involvement in unlawful acts, you are only involved in the lawful acts of the organization or your involvement was on a short-term basis and only for curiosity or academic interest.

By Wade Stevenson

Personal Factors

You will also be evaluated on personal factors such as dishonesty, insubordination or other poor conduct that makes you a security risk. Hiding information that could expose you to blackmail may also prevent you from obtaining clearance. Personal conduct concerns may be mitigated if the reports of bad behavior may have come from unreliable sources or you attempted to correct the false information before it was detected. Sexual behavior that involves criminal activity, is a sign of an emotional or personality disorder or puts you in a position to be coerced or exploited can also disqualify you. The activity may be disregarded if it was only conducted during or prior to adolescence, you have had no relapses in adulthood and there is no other evidence of instability or poor decision-making in your history.

Drug and Alcohol Use

You may be denied clearance if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, including the misuse of prescription medications or a diagnosis of chemical addiction from a licensed social worker or physician. Failing to complete a mandated rehabilitation course, recent involvement with drugs, conviction for driving under the influence, reporting for duty while intoxicated or domestic abuse charges can also be indications of an ongoing substance abuse problem. Successfully completing a rehabilitation course and aftercare with no sign of relapse can restore your eligibility for security clearance.

Criminal Activity

A history of small criminal offenses, one major offense, an admission or credible allegations of involvement in a crime, even if no charges were filed, may also be disqualifying factors. These concerns may be mitigated if you were coerced or pressured into committing the crime against your will and the oppressor is no longer in your life, you were acquitted of the charges or there is evidence you have been successfully rehabilitated and will not commit crimes in the future.

Veterans Add to ‘Diversity’ By Uwe Reinhardt

Princeton University’s Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity delivered its final report to the public a few days ago. Having served on University committees in the past, I know how much time, research, thought and discussion went into the report, for which the University community should be grateful, as I am. One does not have to take issue with what is in the report to notice the conspicuous absence of one dimension of diversity. On page 9 of the report, one finds a long list of characteristics of diversity that “may shape an individual’s world view,” among them gender, race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, citizenship and life experience. Notably absent from this catalogue is the life experience of individuals who have served this country in the military—especially those who have served in combat zones abroad. In my view, they deserve explicit mention in any serious discussion on diversity. I would not howl here into the wind with the theme that our nation owes veterans a debt of gratitude, especially those who for so many years worked and suffered on faraway combat duty. Most veterans I know are sober enough not to expect all that much on that score from the rest of society. That so many veterans remain unemployed speaks volumes. Instead, I write here about the valuable perspectives these veterans’ life experiences could add to a campus that seriously seeks a greater diversity of perspectives in its community. For starters, our armed forces arguably represent the most amazingly effective educational institution in the country. Our military recruits youngsters from the socioeconomic strata routinely overlooked by higher education. With discipline and idealism, they forge the motley crews they take in into racially and ethnically integrated communities with a great variety of highly technical skills — a community with a unique sense of honor and willingness to sacrifice for members of their community and for the country at large.

If I were the Dean of the College, you can bet that I would always have on my staff some ex-military men and women, perchance even a drill instructor. Who knows better how to deal with rambunctious young people of diverse backgrounds, to exhort them to greater things and, just as importantly, to develop in them that personal “bearing,” as the military call it, that might make college students think twice before ending up drunker than skunks in a hospital’s emergency room, there to shame their community by begging for succor from the consequences of their own folly? I would imagine also that a faculty member with a military background would bring valuable perspectives to the class room. Who would know better how tough moral choices are actually made, sometimes under the most bewildering and strenuous circumstances and in split seconds, or how to ration scarce resources? The typical faculty member can imagine and theorize about such choices. It might help sometimes to have actually faced such choices. One final point. It may be thought that I put finger to word processor here mainly because my own son is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Not so. I have been an admirer and friend of America’s military long before he was born, going back to the time when I was a child. I have written in the Princeton Alumni Weekly tributes to our military when our Marine was still in kindergarten, and I served on the Veteran Administration’s Special Medical Advisory Committee during the Reagan Administration. When my children were small, we visited American military cemeteries in Europe with them, there to show our respect and gratitude and to show my children a glorious part of their American heritage. This column is not about my son. It is about American veterans, period, and it is about a potential benefit to our community that this University may overlook to its disadvantage. Women in The Workforce: Past And Present

W

hile it’s true that discrepancies persist in men’s and women’s treatment in the workplace, were the women who lived just a century ago able to see where women are today, they would rub their eyes in amazement. And no doubt the women who lived in the centuries before them would do the same to see how far their daughters had come. For the fairer sex, the path to the right to work has been long and arduous, fraught with roadblocks at every turn and peril for those first brave few who walked it. But thanks to those very women laying the groundwork, 21st century women in the United States, and many other countries, are free to flourish their intelligence, passion, and ambition, no matter where they may take them. We’re looking at the women who have reached the pinnacle of the business world, the ones who are working their way there, and the ones who took those first steps out into the working world.

The Long Road to Inclusion

Every dictator knows the best way to keep the people suppressed is to prevent their access to education. For centuries, this technique worked to keep women in the dark and out of the workforce. It wasn’t until the Age of Enlightenment, which began about 1650 in Europe, that the seeds began to be planted for the idea that women are as competent as men, lacking only education, not intelligence. The British thinker Mary Wollstonecraft enunciated this idea with her 1792 book, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, that was very well-received when it appeared. By the end of the 18th century, women were

regular participants in salons and academic debates, though widespread schooling for women was still many years away. In the meantime, the Industrial Revolution was birthed and women began to be needed to fill unskilled worker roles in factories and mills. Young women from New England farms were attracted to cities by the promise of $3 a week wages. United by their circumstances, these women began to wage battles for better pay and working conditions for both men and women. During this time, a spate of colleges for women appeared. Ironically, since the American Revolution, women’s education had been limited to training as teachers (and even then, society decreed only single women could be teachers). But beginning in the 1830s, “full” colleges began educating girls, and in 1851 the Tennessee and Alabama Female Institute became the first school in the country to offer women a degree equivalent to those given to men. It was an era of first female advanced degree holders: the first female doctor, the first female lawyer, the first female dentist. Still, it took major catalysts for women to make inroads into the workforce. During World War I, and later WWII, scores of women filled the vacancies left by their brothers, husbands, and sons, doing everything from driving cabs and pumping gas to manufacturing and even designing war planes. Nevertheless, when the war ended and the soldiers came home, women were told to return to their homes. It would take yet one more generation for women to set foot inside not just the factory floor, but the boardroom. Emboldened by feminist thinkers like Gloria Steinem and buoyed by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, women began forging their way up the business ladder. In 1967, Muriel “Mickie” Siebert became the first female member of the New York Stock Exchange. The next year, Mary Kay Ash went public with her cosmetics company, which she had founded with the ideal of creating a place where entrepreneurial women like her could be their own bosses. By the next decade, women like PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi and HP CEO Meg Whitman were earning their MBAs and advanced business degrees on their way to becoming business titans of today.

Standout Businesswomen

Despite significant hurdles, instances of women becoming business sensations go back well into the 18th century and perhaps even before. Eliza Lucas Pinckney was managing three plantations at the age of 16, turning South Carolina into a mecca for indigo production in the 1740s and making it one of the colonies’ strongest economies. The year after Pinckney died, Rebecca Lukens was born. Lukens would grow up to become “America’s first female CEO of an industrial company,” according to Fortune magazine. In the early 20th century, America got its first female self-made millionaire. A hair loss sufferer herself, Madam C.J. Walker developed her own line of hair care products to promote hair

rates than their peers once they have children. Might this be at least part of the reason the percentage of women in leadership positions at Fortune 500 firms has plateaued around 14%? It typically takes years to climb the corporate ladder to the executive rung, and it seems much of the top female talent is abandoning the hike in favor of motherhood. On a positive note, women are slowly becoming better represented in MBA programs. For example, the average percentage of women in the 25 largest MBA programs in New York was up from 42.8% in 2011 to 45.4% in 2012. In 2013, Harvard Business School enrolled its highest-ever percentage of women. However, female graduates of these and other top business schools face a growing gender wage gap once they earn that degree. Women with Stanford MBAs earn just $.79 on the dollar compared to men. Whereas women at those same top schools had earned on average 98% of their male colleagues’ salaries in 2002, in 2012 the rate had fallen to 93.2%. These troubling figures notwithstanding, women appear poised to be the leaders of the workforce— or at the very least, true equals at last — in the coming decades. Women eclipsed men in college enrollment in the late 1970s, and the gap has only been widening. The National Center for Education Statistics forecasts a total of just over 13.5 million female college students in 2020 (compared to just under 9.5 million males). That’s good, because if a recent report is to be believed, we’ll need those women working. The McKinsey Global Institute found the world needs another 95 million skilled workers by 2020. If the rightness of their cause has not brought about equal treatment for women in the workplace by then, their sheer force of numbers surely will. Article provided by http://www.onlinemba.com/

7 Big Career Blunders by Philip Anderson

Complacency

Failing to learn

No career plan

Reputation damage on social media

It’s easy to become complacent when you have been in the same role for a long time. You should always learn new things and develop new skills. A healthy amount of pressure is good for you. If your job is easy and you can clock off at 5 every evening, then it’s possible that you are complacent. Complacency is disastrous in any career. When you stop challenging yourself, you will soon find that other people overtake you. Don’t let your peers leave you behind. Start looking for a new opportunity now.

new year is the perfect opportunity to take a step back, and think about your career. It’s important to learn from previous mistakes, and January is the perfect month to do it. If you want to develop your career, focus on what you are doing wrong now. There are plenty of common career blunders. The good news is that they are easy to fix. Your new career plan starts here.

What career goals did you have in 2013? Did you meet them? A career plan is vital. It sets out what you need to do and how to do it. It also helps you manage your time. You will never succeed if you do not set targets. Devise short and medium-term goals. Break them down into tasks and put a deadline against each one. Measure your performance throughout the year to make sure you meet your goals.

If your role is challenging enough, you should always learn at least three new things every day. You should also make sure that you don’t make the same mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes. The important thing is to show how you deal with those mistakes. If you fail to learn from your mistakes, the results could be disastrous. Make sure that your development plan focuses on brand new skills, and training that will help you improve existing skills.

Social networks can help you grow your network and get access to exciting new opportunities. Telework–A Boon for The Disabled by De Scribe

T

elework – completing job tasks from home or any location other than your employer’s primary office – has greatly evolved from its U.S. inception in the 1950’s. An estimated 20 million U.S. employees, 10 million Canadians and many millions more in Europe work from home or telework centers. Difficulties recruiting and retaining employees, rising real estate costs, employee demands for work/life balance, and traffic congestion have been the primary catalysts for the exponential growth of telecommuting. Telework can be a terrific opportunity for a disabled or homebound job candidate, and hundreds of U.S. firms offer this work option. Although most organizations compel employees to be on-site for a short period to ‘learn the ropes,’ there are others who only require their job candidates to prove they have the skills, an adequately- equipped home office and the self-direction to complete work from a remote location. At Prudential, 40,000 of the 60,000 employees telework – or at least have the option to do so. Sherry Cronin, Director of Human Resource Policy and Strategy affirms that they do hire with the prospect of telecommuting if the job candidate has proven productivity in a telework environment. Cronin believes in telework, explaining that Prudential is “creating an environment people want to work in.” At Prudential purchase of equipment, connections, etc. for home office is up to each business unit, although typically the equipment is provided. Art & Logic, a Southern-California software design firm, hires all its employees to telework from day one. Occasionally they even hire with-

out meeting the job candidate. Art & Logic supplies all home equipment. Founder and President Paul Hershenson explains: “If you went to work for IBM in their office they would put a computer on your desk. If you go to work for us, we put a computer on your home desk.” Janice Miholics, Vice President of Global Work/Life Strategies for Merrill Lynch enthuses that “telework is the key cornerstone of the firm’s work/life strategy.” “Retention is THE driver now,” she emphasizes. Approximately 3500 of the finance giant’s employees telework at least part time. The company provides the equipment and connectivity; the home worker provides the ergonomically correct furniture. The Florida-based firm of Willow CSN has created an innovative telework program. While each teleworker is an independent contractor rather than employee, the firm offers extensive support and training to its 1600 home-based people. Willow, a virtual call center, provides inbound customer service for an impressive array of clients, including AAA, 1-800-FLOWERS, Office Depot, Alamo Rent A Car and Gap, Inc. Each candidate completes an extensive interview process and, if accepted, travels to its Fort Lauderdale office for 2 weeks of training including the opportunity to meet and bond with other “Cyber Agents” before returning home to begin their entrepreneurial career. CEO Asim Saber explains that while Agents work from home they also have plenty of opportunity to interact through email, Christmas party, focus groups, etc. Since this is an independent contract opportunity,

Governments were the first to offer telework and U.S. federal, state and municipal governments have been mandated to expand this innovative work option. the candidate’s monetary investment for home office furnishings, equipment and software can run $1200-$3500 depending on what the candidate’s home office already has in place. The best place to start your telework job hunt may not be with private firms, however. Governments were the first to offer telework and U.S. federal , state and municipal governments have been mandated to expand this innovative work option. The federal government, for instance, created a group of 17 telework centers within a 70 mile radius of Washington DC for its employees, as well as the employees of private firms.

A large percentage of California, Virginia and Washington state employees telework and these and other states have passed or introduced legislation providing tax credits and reimbursement to area firms who include telecommuting as a work option. Many municipalities, such as the cities of Atlanta, Los Angeles, Portland Oregon and Redmond Washington promote telework to counteract their traffic congestion and smog problems. Your telework employer may be as close as your city hall or state government office. So, what does it take to be a teleworker? From the advice of human resource managers, telework consultants and educators I have compiled the following list of Ideal Teleworker attributes. How do you measure up? The ideal teleworker…: • Is a self-starter – independent, self-motivated • Is results-oriented • Is flexible • Is well organized • Has low affiliation needs – not needing continual social interaction with coworkers • Is able to balance work and family life. Child or elder care and telework do not mix. • Has a home environment conducive to telework – safe, hazard-free, ergonomically sound, free from distraction; ideally with separate lockable office space. • Has excellent communication skills. • Is comfortable with emerging technologies. • Is a team player. • Typically holds a ‘knowledge-based’ position. • Has strong time and priority management skills

March 2014

• Demonstrates exceptional work commitment. As one manager put it “there are some folks to whom you can give an assignment and just walk away.” • Is able to produce work where or whenever possible • Has a good working relationship with her or his immediate supervisor. • Has available equipment. While not necessarily a requirement that the teleworker already own a computer, fax, second phone line, etc. if the employer is not committing to buying or reimbursing for the purchase the available hardware and software must be compatible with that of the primary office. For telework news, guidance and opportunities peruse the web sites of Canadian Telework Association www.ivc.ca, ITAC (International Telework Association and Council) www.telecommute.org , Gil Gordon Associates www.gilgordon.com , Jack Nilles and Associates www.jala.com and June Langhoff’s Telecommuting Resource Center, www.langhoff.com. When conducting a video interview via Skype, it is important to check out your surroundings. Look behind your sitting area, as this is the backdrop that your interviewer will see. A messy or cluttered background will give a negative

impression about your organization skills, and it may also be distracting to your audience. Instead, plan ahead to prepare your surroundings in a number of important ways: • Ensure that your desktop is clean and well-organized. • Let anyone else in your home know about your meeting ahead of time so that you aren’t interrupted. • Hire a babysitter or someone to watch your pets to limit distractions.

Be Attentive to Your Body Language

It is important to make sure that the camera on your computer provides your audience with a good picture of your head and upper body, and your hands should also be visible. Remember that nonverbal cues and positive body language will help to convey your message to an interviewer.

Manufacturing and Industrial Technology

T

here are people like to make things, to tinker, to fix. And there are those who have a knack for business, for leadership, for innovation. And when those skills overlap, you have a key player in the field of manufacturing, particularly as the industry evolves on a global scale. There’s a growing cry for bolstering domestic manufacturing as well, and if you have an interest in the business of science and engineering, you might be the one to answer it. Closely related to similar fields of engineering, this major is intended to prepare individuals for practical careers in the research, development, and actual fabrication of materials, equipment, and other new products. The technologist will often assist a supervising engineer in product design and may act as a go-between with a manufacturer during production. The major may also touch upon elements of industrial organization and planning and productivity improvement. This study occasionally is found as a concentration within a general engineering program and may be called “manufacturing engineering technology” at some universities. The plan of study usually begins with a strong liberal arts base, including the preliminary mathematics and science course work prerequisite to technology courses. There is an increasing emphasis on the use of computers in solving industrial problems; this will surely be an import-

ant component. In addition, at the upper-division level the program will lead students to integrate their knowledge and skills in order to solve industrial problems. Some business courses may also be required to enhance knowledge of management, statistics, and even accounting procedures.

There’s a growing cry for bolstering domestic manufacturing, and if you have an interest in the business of science and engineering, you might be the one to answer it. Alternative related college majors include business administration, general engineering, industrial arts education, industrial engineering, industrial psychology, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, mining engineering, and operations research. Expect to take classes in calculus and advanced calculus, chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, and advanced physics, materials and processes, hydraulics, metallurgy, and computer-aided design. Suggested high school subjects include advanced mathematics, advanced science, computer science, and accounting. Article provided by CollegeXpress.com

Earn the Business Promotion You’ve Been Hoping For by Heather Hughes

Un

less nepotism is involved or you’re just incredibly lucky, you usually have to start at the bottom when you go to work for almost any company or organization. That’s just the way it is in the business world. However, where you go from there is up to you. How fast you rise within your company will depend greatly on your performance and behavior. One surefire way to move up the corporate ladder is to show leadership. Fortunately, it’s easy to prove yourself if you follow a few simple guidelines. Here are four easy tips to earn the business promotion you’ve been hoping for: 1. Stay positive. No one likes to be around someone who’s negative all the time. If nobody wants to be around you, you’re certainly not going to get promoted. Companies want employees that have a positive attitude and can help take the business further. Fostering a sense of positivity is often what keeps corporations at the top of their game. By showing that you believe in your company and what it can achieve, you’ll also show

that you’re worthy of a promotion. 2. Take initiative. Laziness is a major hindrance when it comes to employee promotion. The best way to avoid looking lazy is to pick up the slack of others. If there’s a project that no one else wants to head up, volunteer to take charge. If your coworkers have been avoiding filling out any boring yet necessary paperwork, be willing to lend a hand. You may not want to do difficult or mundane tasks, but you do want a promotion. Putting the company’s needs above your own is a step in that direction. Do anything and everything you can to show you’re motivated and ready to lead your peers. 3. Perform well. This one seems like a no-brainer. After all, you know you should be doing your job to the best of your ability. However, many people don’t really put this advice to good use. If you want to land a position with more responsibilities, you’ve got to show that you’re going above and beyond the call of duty with your current role. Take advantage of every opportunity to make your work better. Get those weekly reports done ahead of schedule and take the time to make your PowerPoint presentations look exceptionally professional. Keep your office or work station clean and organized so you can maximize your productivity while you’re at your desk. Even if you’re a lowly intern who just makes copies and coffee, make sure the ink cartridges are filled and those cups of joe are hot and fresh. Sometimes paying attention to the small things can lead to bigger things for you in terms of your

career. You may be surprised at how much your manager or supervisor will notice your extra effort. 4. Get along with your coworkers. We’ve all had the experience of engaging with annoying coworkers or people we just can’t seem to get along with. However, if you’re trying to earn a promotion, it’s in your best interest to put your differences aside. Help out another employee that might be behind on an assignment and don’t bicker with anyone who might try to pick a fight. Don’t join in on any gossip that could cause a riff between you and any other coworkers. Focus on accomplishing your own goals as well as helping others achieve their ambitions. Working together as a team will be much more beneficial for all parties involved. By showing that you’re a team player, you’ll also show that you care about the success of the company you work for. That’s definitely something your boss will be looking for the next time he or she has an important position to fill. When you go to work for any company or organization, you may have to start with an entry level job. However, you certainly don’t have to stay at that level. It’s easy to gain a position with higher pay and more responsibilities if you follow the straightforward guidelines listed here. With these simple tips, you can earn the business promotion you’ve been hoping for. You’ll be on your way to stepping into the leadership role that you deserve! Tomorrow’s Healthcare Technologies: The Sky Is the Limit

R

By Charles C. Poling

adiologic technologists (R.T.s) work in a world that has been defined by technology since the discovery of the x-ray more than 100 years ago. Think of the innovations that have emerged in the past few decades, from computer-assisted diagnosis to digital radiography, from computed tomography to functional magnetic resonance imaging. Even as you read this, new systems are barreling down the road toward you. What might they be? How will they change your job? Will health care policy help or hinder their implementation? Knowing what technologic developments are under way — some just around the corner — can help you plot your course through the changing landscape of the radiologic sciences.

Broadening Skill Sets, Improved Safety and Quality

It’s impossible to predict the future, especially given the infinite possibilities science offers, but it’s reasonable to forecast that medical imaging and radiation therapy technologies will become more accurate, and some more complex. But these improvements are not all in the name of science — for R.T.s, they come in the name of patient safety and quality care. “In the near term, you’re going to have the normal organic migration of technology, basically enhancements or improvements to existing technology,” said Ray Russell, M.B.A., R.T.(R), director of sales for national accounts, channels and western zone at Agfa HealthCare. “CT is going to be better, faster, cheaper. You’ve got all the slice enhancements coming on, and every time you get to a new plateau, it expands the amount of data collected and relevant clinical information. That’s going to impact R.T.s.” Corey Zankowski, vice president of product management at Varian Medical Systems, also predicts “evolutionary improvements on the existing imaging systems,” citing in particular “the megavoltage and kilovoltage area. You’ll see increases in overall imaging quality and the addition of high-quality time-based four-dimensional imaging.”

It’s reasonable to forecast that medical imaging and radiation therapy technologies will become more accurate, and some more complex.

Ray also described the imminent development of “composite imaging,” which draws upon images from multiple modalities and other data to create a new image that incorporates information from all those sources — a view we’ve never seen before. He also described the potential for software hybrid imaging, which depends on computers to stitch images together.

Paging Dr. Smartphone

A catalog of future technologies might not list robots replacing R.T.s, but it could include ultrasound-capable smartphones, far-out devices like the Star Trek tricorder that perform a wide array of noninvasive diagnostics, injectable imaging devices and other biosensors operating on a microscopic scale. Optical coherence tomography, which Agfa and others are developing, creates the possibility of imaging the skin at various levels. “Our holy grail for any dermatological application would be eliminating biopsies for squamous or basal cell carcinoma,” Ray said. On another front entirely, SPECT-CT might provide whole-body imaging and also aid in dosimetry. Two areas heading straight for a clinic near you certainly will affect the work of R.T.s, the experts say: the advent of nanoparticles as diagnostic and treatment tools, and the inevitable emergence of genomics in daily medicine. Miniaturization technology creates amazing possibilities for imaging on a very small scale inside the body, with some camera companies seeking to mate optical technologies with endoscopy for extremely accurate diagnoses and treatment. “Virtually all the existing imaging platforms could be impacted,” said Ray. Nanoparticles also enable “theranostics” — diagnosis and treatment in one procedure. While imaging with nanoparticles, “you can attach whatever therapeutic agent you want to the same platform. Say you’ve diagnosed a particular tumor using nanoparticles. You could do therapeutics at the same time and follow whether the tumor is shrinking in real time as you’re doing the therapy. CT, MR and ultrasound all lend themselves to this new technology.” Genomics involves running complete genetic screening on a patient, then using that information for diagnosing and treating diseases or even preventing them, based on genetic predisposition. “Genomics — in my

In MR, for instance, “you might do a certain sequence depending on the genetic test outcome. The ability to correlate

March 2014 figure out how to dig out from the past several years of limited capital.” Bill views the situation philosophically. “I would not even venture a guess as to what the future holds for medical technology. However, I will make one prediction: R.T.s will adapt to whatever is thrown their way. We are first and foremost problem solvers and patient advocates. I do not see that changing regardless of economics. R.T.s will continue to seek the best images possible, using whatever technology is available, so their patients get the best care.” “The essentials of what we do and what makes us successful in providing services to the patient won’t change. Compassion, interacting with patients and adapting to patients’ needs will still be the core of what we do,” said Kevin Powers, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(M), ASRT director of education. “We’ll still have to be masters of technology, experts in radiation protection and the effects of radiation in the body, and able to create and critique images and therapies that we produce to maintain high quality and high value.” To Charles, the future is wide open: “Many new and different applications of technology will make fantastic things possible. It’s all for the sake of trying to make the overall outcome of the patient better. As long as we keep our patients as the No. 1 focus, we’ll continue to challenge ourselves to progress more and more. The sky is the limit. When you peer inside a crystal ball, it’s going to reflect the limitations of our minds. You think, ‘What could be?’ Then it can be.” Article provided by HeatheCareers.com. The Challenges of Working from Home By C.J. Hayden, MCC

F

or many working parents, telecommuting or a home business may seem like the answer to your prayers. You want to have more time with your kids and greater flexibility, so you take the leap, install a second phone line, and set up a computer in the dining room. But the first thing you may discover is that working from home includes many unexpected distractions. Children, your spouse and neighbors come and go. They make loud noises, ask for your help, or interrupt to ask a “quick question,” always just long enough to break your concentration. Your family and friends don’t seem to understand that you’re working. They ask you to run errands, expect you to handle chores, and want to chat on the phone. When you see the pile of laundry or stack of dishes sitting there waiting, you may be tempted to take time out from work to clean up a bit. You’d like to keep your house livable and be available to the people you care about, but it’s just too much for one person to manage. When can you get any work done? The way out is to set clear boundaries on your space and time. If your office has a door, try having “open-door” time and “closed-door” time. When your door is open, the kids can come say hello, ask questions, or tell you about their day. When the

door is closed, it means “Do Not Disturb.” A good way to explain this to children is to tell them you need some private time, not just that you are busy. Setting regular working hours will help you manage your time better as well as give some guidelines to your family. Build your hours around the family activities that are important to you. If your kids get home at 2:00, for example, set up your work day from 8:30 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 6:00. Your schedule can change each week to allow for your children’s activities, when necessary. Choose how many work hours per week makes sense for you, design a schedule, and post it on your office door. Highlight the open times, and let everyone know that’s when you are available to them. If your family expects you to run errands and handle chores during your work day, it may be time to hold a family meeting. Explain to your children (and remind your spouse) that it may look like mommy or daddy is playing on the computer or chatting on the phone, but this is his or her job, and it contributes to the family’s income. Start by listing all the jobs that need to be done for the household, and who does them now. Instead of assigning chores, try asking each family member to volunteer for something. If there are lots of tasks left

over, be sure to ask if they really need to be done, or done as often. (Dusting, for example, may need to go by the wayside.) If you are doing chores during time you could be making money, consider hiring someone else to clean your house, service the car, or drive the kids to afterschool activities. When one of your boundaries gets tested, learn to hold the line. If you give in even once, don’t expect the boundary to hold up. Try making the closed door, posted schedule, or job roster the bad guy instead of yourself. Instead of, “I’m too busy to talk right now -- you’ll have to wait,” say, “The door is closed now, would you please come back when it’s open?” When friends phone during work time, ask them to call back after hours. And when someone doesn’t do one of their chores, don’t do it for them. Serving a meal on dirty dishes may seem extreme, but it will get the message across. Copyright © C.J. Hayden C.J. S

ustainability jobs are the fastest growing on current job markets. As pollution increases it makes us steadily aware of the need to live conservatively and with the planets ecology in mind. The most urgent issue that needs addressing is teaching youth a new lifestyle they can build on in future generations. Green careers enable the youth oriented the ability to work closely with today’s youth and offer highly rewarding and exciting avenues in sustainability. Here are five awesome green jobs a creative and self-motivated individual can train for or create to help youth pave a sustainable future:

1. Y outh Development Coordinator

A Youth Development Coordinator revolves around kids and is perfect for someone who loves a high-energy career of being a mentor. Many organizations offer youth development positions, these include churches, schools, community centers, Child Protective Services, children’s services, and community-based organizations. While most positions may only be two to four hours per day, a full-time position expect as much as $35,000 per year. A Youth Development Coordinator is responsible for setting up and facilitating programs for children, applying for funding, and coordinating with those whom they work. Some exciting activities youth coordinators are involved in include field trips, hiking, planting projects, recycling projects, sustainability projects, camping, and mentoring. Youth coordinators

2. C ommunity Garden Coordinator

Community garden projects do not typically sound like a chance to work with youth. However, many community gardens are offering themselves as a safe haven for after-school youths. Community gardens also provide opportunities for school field trips and extracurricular activities during school hours. Organic community gardens are a fantastic way to teach children of any age about sustainability, and they also help children to connect with their

community junk apart from the income possibilities. A coordinator works with local youth coordinators to create after-school programs where kids collect recycling and learn about recycling. Other neat projects include a school recycling program and making rounds at public schools, community centers, churches, and youth groups to talk about recycling, sustainability, up-cycling, and community or home projects they can create. Also, consider setting up a community outreach website for recycling, recycle planning, recycling programs, scheduling, and a trade forum or up-cycle program to help get kids, parents, and other community members more involved. Consider too, the impact of creating a community recycling project. Not only will such a program aid local communities in sustainability through recycling refuse, they can also learn the value of up-recycling. Up-cycling things like old clothes, furniture, cars, blankets, and other household items will help those in need. Additionally, creating a community whose total trash impact, and thus carbon footprint, is significantly lowered while using the trade-in or up-cycled items to help families in need is highly rewarding.

4. Public Speaking on Sustainability

Delivering public speaking discourses about sustainability in local schools, community centers, youth outreach, and churches may not sound that fun at first, but it leads to many more as opportunities to get involved and creates activities for local youth and the local community. The pay is better than most think. While most of the income may come from sponsorships or grants at first, speaking engagements can pay quite lucratively, often per attendee. A Sustainability public Speaking career is also easily started while still in high-school or college, and can be used to fund further education. Consider starting out by facilitating events at local schools with youth coordinators. Or by contacting community garden or youth recycling projects. Then, create programs which include opportunities to teach small groups or large groups by example. A public speaking career on sustainability may also lead to creating handouts, books, and other materials about sustainability and recycling to use as takeaways to teach kids and other attendees the message after they leave. With a bit of effort, this position will lead to inspiring others towards helping other community members with their sustainability and green projects.

5. Sustainability Project Manager

A sustainability project manager may not always work directly with kids, but there may be positions within local school districts, schools, or community programs. A sustainability project manager typically leads a company or community in tracking and making changes, including energy efficiency, carbon emissions, carbon footprints, waste, recycling, water conservation, and other kinds of implementable sustainability projects. The income averages between $25,000 to $45,000 per year, depending on the community, job placement, and other factors. Where this job gets interesting is that it can be can leveraged to impact local youths for sustainability projects. Sustainability project managers facilitate community outreach programs, youth coordinators, community garden projects, youth recycling projects, public sustainability speakers, and much more. A sustainability project manager is responsible for and helps communities teach new generations better uses for natural resources, recycling waste, and up-cycling used items. With a bit of paperwork, SPM’s are directly involved in the local community’s youth projects too.

There are Always More Ways to Go Green

With a bit of ingenuity and quite a bit of planning, finding or creating sustainability projects, jobs, and programs, that help youth of today, is rewarding. Don’t be limited to these fun ideas, there are an unlimited number of possibilities out there just waiting for people to take them on. Consider green building projects, green community centers, green school remodeling projects, and even green housing projects for those in need. Remember too, there are jobs and positions just waiting to be created, many of these include increasing sustainable green jobs for local communities. Such job creation includes, jobs that help kids connect with the earth, help local families afford needs, and help communities reduce the poverty level. A youth-centered green career can change the future by creating more self-sufficient youths who can make a difference in today and tomorrow. Article provided by www.constantcontent.com

The Role of Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists M edical laboratory technologists (commonly known as medical laboratory scientists) and medical laboratory technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. Medical laboratory technologists perform complex medical laboratory tests; medical laboratory technicians perform routine medical laboratory tests.

Duties

Medical laboratory technologists and technicians typically do the following: • Analyze body fluids, such as blood, urine, and tissue samples, and record normal or abnormal findings • Study blood samples for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types • Operate sophisticated laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters • Use automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests together.

Both technicians and technologists perform tests and procedures that physicians and surgeons or other healthcare personnel order.

However, technologists perform more complex tests and laboratory procedures than technicians do. For example, technologists may prepare specimens and perform manual tests that are based on detailed instructions, whereas technicians perform routine tests that may be more automated. Medical laboratory technicians usually work under the general supervision of medical laboratory technologists or laboratory managers. Technologists in small laboratories perform many types of tests; in large laboratories, they generally specialize. The following are examples of types of specialized medical laboratory technologists: Blood bank technologists, or immunohematology technologists, collect blood, classify it by type, and prepare blood and its components for transfusions. Creating Passion—

How To Love What You Do

C

by Long Yun Siang

reating passion is a challenge isn’t it - trying to love what you dread. Be it a client or an account or even a certain process in the work you do. Sometimes just that one thing alone makes it difficult for you to even climb out of bed. Passion for your work is such a romantic term. Can passion be truly created? I believe it can. How do you create passion for your work? Here are some simple steps I have used in creating passion for what I do. Get excited over them and perform well at work.

1. Ignore The Inner Chatter. Do It Anyway.

this as a way of paying your future dues. This is one way of creating passion. Learn to change your perception. When you change your perception, you change your reality. Because your perception is your reality.

2. The Why of You?

Why are you, you? And what is it you do that matters? What is your contribution so that you matter? We live because we want to matter. We want to contribute in meaningful ways. Work is our service to the world. It is what allows us to sweat to earn a spot in this world. Do you understand the why of you? If you do not, work is an excellent place to discover - YOU. And how do you discover yourself? By doing. By experimenting. If you continue to say, I do not like this and never try, your life will be miserable. This world isn’t about you, you, you. It’s about how you add to the world. When you can connect what you like to how you do what you do not like, you light the path to the why of you. You can be creating passion just by learning to discover you.

Whether you like it or not, you have to do the work. Our mind acts in such a way that it tries to control us. While you feel that you own your mind, unless you train it to, you will never be able to ignore it. Especially, the inner chatter. Before you even start, it will tell you, it sucks, it cannot work and it will destroy your life. Ask yourself, does whatever you need to do help you in whatever way in your life later? If it is a yes, do it well. If it is a no, ask yourself can it possibly help 3. What Is It You Do Not Know? you later? Chances are it will. So, look at Surely, you cannot know everything. So,

what you do not like makes you learn new things. If we keep doing what we like we will not improve. If you are a pianist and you keep playing the pieces you do best, you won’t improve much. To improve ourselves at work and in life, we have to force ourselves to learn and do things we may not enjoy. Learn to be curious. It helps in creating passion. The more we are curious about things, the more we find out why. The more why we know, the more meaningful things are to us.

4. Make It Meaningful

If you want passion to appear, you need to make things meaningful to yourself. How does this relate to you? In the most obscure fashion, we can all make things seemingly unrelated to us carry some meaning. Dig deep into yourself. See it from another perspective. How can you use this to contribute to your life? How can you use this to contribute to your world? Your family? How will someone you love benefit from this?

5. Cut The Ropes

Stop feeling miserable. Unless you quit your job, you still have to do what you have to do. You might as well do it well. After all, your reputation is on it. Tell yourself, I GET to do. Not, I HAVE to do. It’s a huge difference. Get tells you, it’s an opportunity. Have makes you feel forced. One trick to creating passion is not to worry about the results. Focus on the process. What you will learn and how it will contribute to your future. At the very least, it teaches you patience and it challenges your limits.

6. Set A Goal

Most of us are goal oriented people. We want to reach a certain destination. Gives yourself a goal as far as your work is concerned. What is that goal. When you have an objective in sight, you naturally look for the fuel that propels you there. It’s kind of like having a car and knowing where you want to go. But without fuel. What would you do next? Look for fuel. Same goes with work. Be clear with your goals. Once you have the goal, your next task is to focus on getting the fuel. The frustration of standing still will force you to get moving. Having goals can help you in creating passion.

Get around people who are excited. We are who we communicate with because we feed off each other. 7. Surround Yourself With Energy

Get around people who are excited. It cannot be that everyone on the team is not excited. We are who we communicate with because we feed off each other. If you feel you are not as enthusiastic about a certain project, get behind people who are as excited. Their excitement will rub off on you. It will make you overcome the initial inertia. You will gain traction and momentum when you make an effort internally and you surround yourself with energetic people. Passion is not innate. We can learn to be passionate about our work. No one job has all the nice things. Each have it’s nice and ugly side. The trick is to make sure we accept the good and the bad. As we alter our own perception and ACT upon our work, naturally the passion will well up inside us. Long Yun Siang runs http://career-success-for-newbies.com. Future of Nursing: 10 Trends to Watch

M

By HEALTHeCAREERS.com

any people are looking into nursing as a good career field to pursue in healthcare. Not only is nursing a rewarding job, but it is also a position that will always be around. Nurses are so satisfied with their careers that many of them have decided to work beyond retirement age, which may be one of the contributing factors to the recent nursing shortage. Nurses also get paid well. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists their current median pay as $64,690. The following are 10 trends to watch in the nursing field.

1. Education Changes Due to Changes in Demographics

Nurses nowadays have a whole new set of things to learn due to changes in patient demographics. People are now beginning to live longer and the international community in the United States has also increased. This means that nurses must understand the needs of a diverse and aging population.

2. Embracing of Technology

In the age of increasing technology such as smart phones, connected cars, TVs and tablets, nurses across the United States have had to educate themselves to use these technologies to improve patient care. The majority of medical facilities are starting to embrace these technologies in order to reduce administration time and to increase accuracy in treatment and medical records keeping. Nurses are now expected to use computer technology to obtain patient information, save patient information and even look up treatment options when necessary.

3. Advancements in Communication and Technology

Advancements in communication and technology together have helped the medical community reach out to those who were unable to commute to a hospital or other care facility. Nurses are able to communicate with these individuals in We are highly motivated and compassionate people, using advanced systems and technology to be the healthcare provider of choice in our region. hat is it that all successful companies have mastered —and what jobseekers looking to advance in their careers need to master? What is it about Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Starbucks, Disney, and McDonald’s? What makes a consumer buy one product over another -- and makes one job-seeker much more sought after than others? The answer is marketing, but more specifically it is the power of branding. And branding isn’t just for products anymore. Branding can be described as many things, but it’s best defined as a promise... a promise of the value of the product... a promise that the product is better than all the competing products... a promise that must be delivered to be successful. Branding is the combination of tangible and intangible characteristics that make a brand unique. Branding is developing an image -- with results to match. Branding (some call it self-branding or personal branding when talking about individuals) is essential to career advancement because branding helps define who you are, how you are great, and why you should be sought out. Branding is your reputation. Branding is about building a name for yourself, showcasing what sets you apart from others, and describing the added value you bring to a situation. Most job-seekers are not proactive in establishing and building their career brand, letting their actions speak for them when seeking promotions or new jobs. But why not take the time to master some very basic tactics that Help Inspire Better Health can help build your career Taking care of patients in our eight hospitals, outpatient brand and make you a much specialty clinics and primary care centers is what we do more attractive employee best. Become an Expert

Once you identify and build your brand, remember to continue strengthening and protecting it. There will always be competing brands (job-seekers) ready to fill any gap you leave behind.

Nothing builds credibility in a career brand more than establishing yourself as an expert in your field. • Start by writing articles that showcase your knowledge—and getting them published (ideally) in noteworthy media outlets. Consider self-publishing. • Seek out conferences and meetings where you can give speeches and presentations. • Play up awards and other recognition that can help label you an expert. • Get quoted by offering your thoughts, ideas, and opinions to journalists and reporters. • Consider constructing a professional Website where you can publish all your articles and speeches.

Your Nursing Career Plan by H. Cardenas

lanning your nursing career is a continuous process rather than a one-time event. It requires selfassessment and goal setting, attention and nurturing at every stage in your nursing career: entry, advancement, specializing and retirement. Your nursing career plan should be dynamic and stimulating, and responsive to changing circumstances in your life and in your field. It must enable you to assess your nursing strengths and limitations, articulate a nursing career vision, develop an achievable plan for your career and market yourself well to achieve the type of nursing career you want.

Assessment

When considering your nursing career plan, assessment is essential. Evaluate where you’ve been and where you are now to make career decisions. For example, if you are a new graduate ready to start a job search, you’ve recently completed a significant amount of time to get your nursing education and credentials, and now must target what kind of nursing jobs you want, what area of health care you prefer and the employers who have those jobs. Decide how to manage your future as a nurse by researching nursing trends, career paths, opportunities and education requirements in health care.

Develop Your Nursing Career Vision

Your nursing career vision is the link between where you are in your nursing career and where you want to take your career next. Create a career vision by answering questions such as “What do I want out of nursing?” and “Do I want to work in a hospital environment?” and “What is my ideal vision for my nursing career?” Write a nursing career vision statement that precisely encompasses what kind of nurse you want to be, what kind of health care environment you want to work in and what qualifications you need to get there.

Create a Strategic Nursing Plan

After your assessment and career vision development, create a strategic plan for your nursing career and document it in writing. Include your career goals, action steps you’ll take to make it happen, resources you have and will need, your career timelines and identify the indicators of success. Create a well-planned, organized document that you can refer to and adjust with changing circumstances. You’ll need to review your career plan when you complete your nursing education and enter the field of nursing, when you advance in your career, if you change specialties and when you prepare to retire.

Marketing Yourself

An important part of any career plan is marketing yourself. For your nursing career plan, you must market your nursing skills, experience and qualifications in the healthcare industry. Prepare to effectively communicate your professional and personal qualities to convince health care employers that you have the nursing qualities to meet the demands and challenges of their nursing positions, both on paper and in person during interviews. Be sure you incorporate an understanding of the latest trends in health care in your resume, your interview skills and when networking and seeking mentors. Breaking Bad Habits in the Workplace

S

by Long Yun Siang

ome bad habits are carried into the office environment and can be bad for your career advancement. Bad habits are learned behaviors that are repeated often. The more often it is repeated the stronger the habit would be.

How To Break Bad Habits #1: Swearing, Verbal Tics and Conversational Padding

Consider this—people form an immediate opinion about you as soon as you open your mouth. Imagine how this bad habit of using expletive in your workplace can be detrimental to your career advancement. CHC is building a world class primary health care system that is committed to caring for special populations, and that is focused on improving health outcomes for our patients as well as building healthy communities. For employment consideration including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses please submit your resume/cv along with copies of certification and licensure to hr@astorservices.org.

This is especially true for fresh graduates new in the work place. They tend to think that they are in college and still continue to use language that is considered acceptable. The use of verbal tics and conversational padding like ‘y’know’, ‘sorta’, ‘wanna’ and ‘I was like oh my god’, ‘I’m kinda cool with it’ reflects upon the professionalism of the person.

#2: Procrastination

This is a common bad habit that occurs in the office. Many things cause procrastination. Some of them include striving to be perfect, the task isn’t meaningful to you, and doing things that are totally new to you. To break this bad habit, first understand what causes procrastination. If striving to be perfect is the reason then you need to remind yourself that doing your best is more important. You know when you have given your best but you measuring perfect is near impossible.

#3: Playing Computer Games and Chatting

How many times have you seen colleagues chatting either on the phone or via the computer? Or they could be playing simple computer games like solitaire? These bad habits take away productive office hours. In companies with strict policies against counter productive activities like these could put your job on the line. Breaking this bad habit is easy if you realize that it is all about personal responsibility to your work. You are employed to get the work done. Pay attention to the work and deliver quality work. Constantly remind yourself of this. Uninstall these games and chat software from your computer.

In Summary

Be interested in the bad habit that you want to change. Unless you have an interest to change you would not act upon it. And have patience. Behavioral change takes time and support. Tell friends and co-workers about your plan and get them to support you. With some encouragement your trip to breaking the bad habit won’t be a lonely one. What Human Service Workers Do

H

uman service workers can’t force help on someone who doesn’t want it, and they can’t take over a client’s life. Instead, they try to help every client make good decisions, find resources to overcome problems, and inspire the client to make improvements. “I know they can succeed,” Jackson says of her clients, “but I can’t succeed for them.”

Put The Plan into Action

After evaluating the client’s situation and creating a plan, human service workers put the plan into effect. This may include providing direct assistance or helping clients in coordinating services, or both. Practical assistance helps clients accomplish daily living activities: eating, bathing, dressing, and so forth. Workers most often provide this assistance in institutions, such as hospitals, shelters, and residential care facilities for people who are elderly or disabled. Practical assistance might also include helping clients with recreational activities, from arts and crafts to games. In addition, human service workers coordinate services that are provided by their own or other organizations, including government, for-profit, and nonprofit agencies. They help clients by researching types of, and eligibility requirements for, assistance. For example, human service workers might help a client who

lives in unsafe housing locate and qualify for low-income apartments in the client’s community. Another way that human service workers help coordinate services is to assist clients with completing necessary paperwork. After clients begin receiving assistance, human service workers monitor the clients’ status to ensure that services are being provided and are appropriate. Jackson, for example, sees her clients about once a week so she can track their progress.

Provide Emotional Support

Because their clients often face many difficult problems simultaneously, human service workers routinely provide emotional support along with other forms of help. These workers must foster a good working relationship to ensure that a client feels comfortable discussing problems candidly and asking for help. The kind of emotional care human service workers provide ranges from empathy to celebration, depending on what a client is experiencing. “Clients have the enthusiasm to improve their lives,” says Jackson. “It’s often a lack of confidence that prevents them. They’ve never had someone encourage them.” However, human service workers are trained to recognize when emotional support and encouragement are not enough. In

Human service workers assist a diverse population of clients, who are of every age and have a broad range of issues. “The client base of human services runs the gamut,” says the National Organization of Human Services’ Olding. Neil Headman, assistant professor of human services at the University of Illinois at Springfield, agrees. “It doesn’t matter who your client is,” he says. “Everyone needs help.” The following overview of types of clients is not exhaustive. Furthermore, clients dealing with more than one problem may fall into more than one group; for example, someone with a mental illness may also have a problem with substance abuse. Children and families. Human service workers ensure that children live in safe homes and have their basic needs met. Guiding parents in caring for their children may include assisting with applications for food stamps or low-income housing and locating reliable childcare. This removal may be temporary or permanent, but the goal is to work with parents toward improving the situation so that children can return home. “The best place to serve kids is in their home and with a family,” says Joan Wallace-Benjamin, who runs a child welfare agency in the Boston, Massachusetts, area. If a return home isn’t possible, human service workers try to find permanent homes and adoptive parents for the children. The elderly. Human service workers who assist older clients help them to live independently in their own homes whenever possible. This might mean coordinating the delivery of prepared meals or the placement of personal care aides to help with daily living activities. For older clients who are unable to live alone, human service workers help with their placement in nursing homes or other residential care facilities. For clients nearing the end of their lives, human service workers may coordinate the provision of hospice care. The homeless. Human service workers help people who are homeless to meet basic needs. Human service workers may refer clients to a variety of providers, such as temporary or permanent housing facilities, organizations that serve meals, and job centers that can assist the clients in learning new skills or finding jobs. Some clients might need help finding treatment to address an underlying cause of homelessness. Immigrants. Immigrants often need help adjusting to life in a new country. Human service workers help them find housing, jobs, and other resources, such as programs for learning English. In some cases, human service workers also refer clients to legal aid services to assist immigrants with paperwork and other administrative issues. People with addictions. Human service workers help people who are struggling with many types of addiction, such as to alcohol or gambling. They evaluate clients’ needs and then direct clients to rehabilitation facilities, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment centers,

that can best meet those needs. They also refer clients to groups or programs to help clients get support outside of treatment. Some human service workers might work with families of addicts, helping family members understand the nature of addiction and referring them to support programs for families. People with criminal records. People who have been imprisoned face challenges re-entering society, such as overcoming the stigma of their criminal record. Human service workers help these clients integrate back into society by matching them with job training or placement programs, helping them find housing, and directing them to support programs so they avoid reoffending. People with disabilities. In working with people who have disabilities, human service workers often focus on helping clients live independently. Types of assistance include finding rehabilitation services to help clients adapt to the disability, working with employers on adjusting job details so that positions may be filled by clients with disabilities, and referring clients to personal care services that can help with daily living activities. For people with disabilities who cannot live independently, human service workers help locate suitable residential care facilities.

Human service workers direct clients who are mentally ill to appropriate resources, such as self-help and support groups. In addition, they help clients with severe mental illness to become self-sufficient and receive proper care. Human service workers refer these clients to providers of personal care services, group housing, or residential care facilities. Veterans. For some veterans, adjusting to civilian life after military service can be difficult. Human service workers assist these veterans in a variety of ways: finding housing, adapting skills gained in the military to civilian jobs, and navigating through the extensive network of veteran services available. Combat veterans often face additional challenges, such as adapting to physical or mental disability. Human service workers direct veterans with disabilities to services that provide appropriate assistance.

Common Jobs for Human Service Workers

Human service agencies are organized differently, but some jobs are common to many of them. Not all of these positions are in all agencies; job tasks in one position may overlap with those in another, and some agencies may use different titles. Furthermore, job titles include occupations that are found outside of human services, and job tasks may differ in other settings. Jobs in human services are separated into two types: Those in which workers deal directly with clients and those in which workers provide administrative support for an organization that provides services. Both types are essential for human service organizations to run effectively.

Direct Work with Clients

Human service workers who deal directly with clients are responsible for providing the services that an organization offers. Job titles for people who work directly with clients include the following: Case workers and case managers. Case workers and case managers assess clients’ needs and work with them to develop a treatment plan. These workers, who are sometimes called social and human service assistants, help clients in choosing among suitable resources and then follow up to ensure that the services provided are appropriate. Counselors. These workers provide individual and group counseling to help clients with marital difficulties or other problems or in making decisions, such as about career options. Counselors may diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders. Some specialize in working with

Administrative workers

Administrative workers provide the management and support necessary for a human service organization to function. Job titles for administrative workers in human services include the following: Development directors. These workers create their organization’s fundraising strategy and supervise fundraising activities. They work with the executive director and program directors to determine funding needs and then meet with potential donors to explain these needs and how donations are used to serve the community. Development directors often supervise other staff members, such as grant writers. Executive directors. Executive directors oversee the operation of human service organizations. They per-

Executive directors also are responsible for setting the organization’s goals and for ensuring that staff members work toward those goals. Grant writers. Grant writers research sources of funding for which their organizations are eligible. They prepare and maintain records regarding applications, funding received, and how funds are spent. Program directors. These workers design and implement human service programs. They assess the needs of the population that their organization serves and create programs to meet those needs. Program directors supervise staff members and ensure that the program meets state and federal criteria for service providers. These workers also may be responsible for collecting data that are used to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs.

Like most careers, however, the suitability of workers for these jobs varies by individual. “It’s wonderful work,” says Carol Goertzel, president and chief executive officer of human service agencies in Holmes, Pennsylvania, “but it’s not for everybody.” Human service workers help clients improve their lives, and it’s satisfying to see results over time. These results are often dramatic and show how much people can accomplish when they get professional help. “Anyone who expects big results within short periods of time is asking a lot from people who’ve had no support,” Goertzel says. “We see people make incredible changes.” Most human service workers build relationships with their clients out of concern and a desire to help, aware that clients don’t always express their gratitude. “You can’t expect people to say, ‘Thank you so much. You helped me today,’” Goertzel says. As the U.S. population grows, so will the demand for the kinds of help human service agencies provide. However, financial resources available to these organizations do not grow as quickly as the demand for services, increasing competition among agencies seeking funds from the same donors. Human service workers are often asked to provide additional services without having access to additional resources. Some workers find the resulting stress difficult to manage.

Much of a human service organization’s budget is based on highly unpredictable charitable donations. Because wages are usually tied to this variable budget, workers in human service jobs tend to earn less than those in occupations requiring similar levels of education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect employment and wage data specifically on human service workers. However, BLS does collect data on occupations—including several types of counselors, psychologists, and social workers—in which workers provide human services in the social assistance industry. Few human service workers pursue these careers solely for the income, though. Workers cite a passion for the field, noting that human service jobs provide opportunities to help people in need and to find solutions to community problems.

The ability to think creatively helps workers determine ways to get around hurdles that interfere with clients’ efforts to succeed. Educational requirements in human service organizations vary with the type of work performed. However, many human service workers have some kind of postsecondary degree. The education level usually ranges from an associate’s degree to a master’s degree, depending on workers’ titles. At all education levels, degrees are offered in human services, counseling, social work, and psychology. Most programs require some fieldwork, such as an internship, so that students get practical experience working with clients. The level of education generally dictates the type of work someone may perform and the amount of responsibility he or she may be given. Associate’s degree. Giving Yourself An Edge at Work

D

by David Hart

oing your job well is the most important contribution you can make to your organization and to your chances for advancement. But most enterprises in today’s competitive world need to constantly improve to remain profitable or effective. The experience and insights of the workforce are a valuable source for those improvements. Here are some things to keep an eye out for as potential opportunities to contribute to needed solutions: Failing equipment Bottlenecks in processes Complaints from customers Frequent or inconclusive meetings Grumbling among coworkers Unequal distribution of work or rewards None of these is a guaranteed opportunity to shine. There may be good reasons why they exist; they may have been studied before and the solutions may be beyond the control of management. But some will be ripe for action, and even noting them and suggesting solutions will be a mark of alertness, insight, and motivation. How can one best prepare for identifying and taking advantage of these opportunities? The most basic method is continuous learning. Learn all you can about your organization, its missions, ideals, goals, and major activities. Keep up with technological developments in your field or industry so that you’ll be able to recommend new or different equipment, processes, or management techniques. For this

it may be necessary to take courses offered by your organization or by outside educational or training institution You need to be a team player. You should offer to help an overburdened coworker and volunteer for extra assignments if you can handle them without detriment to your regular work. You should look for things that waste your group’s time or harm morale and think of ways to alleviate them. You should learn as much as you can about the jobs of colleagues in other organizations so that you can work more effectively with them. As important as what you do is what you don’t do. Don’t create the impression that you’re an overly eager beaver bent only on getting ahead. If suggestions are requested at meetings, offer them freely, crediting others for ideas you may have picked up from them. If you are volunteering unsolicited recommendations, meet with the boss privately so that you won’t be seen as upstaging him. Be generous with your praise and appreciation of your coworkers and don’t join the critical whispers about any of them or the boss. Criticism should be expressed one-to-one or in open meetings and always focused on positive solutions. Which brings us full circle to the most important thing you can do to get that edge: do your job well. Article provided by www.constantcontent.com

+_interested in a career move so making a great impression with them as you undertake research about your future career is imperative. If you are looking for a move outside your business, you can research the market through reading specific trade publications, through on-line research, talking to people in your chosen field or through discussions with recruiters.

2. C reate and implement your professional development plan

When was the last time that you invested in learning about your area of expertise that you want to build your career in other than through on-the-job learning? Do not get me wrong, learning skills in your current role and then applying them is not to be undervalued. However if you really want to position yourself as an expert in your field, it is important to continuously build on your current knowledge and capabilities. This might be through reading current books, articles and attending seminars or conferences. Capture your professional development plan onto a one page document where you can track the investment you make in your development and also how you put the new skills and knowledge into action.

3. Update your resume or CV

If you have not looked at your CV or resume in the last six months, I can guarantee that it is out of date. Make sure that you take the time to review and update it. This is not a job to be rushed but is worth every minute that you spend on it. Consider it your personal marketing brochure. Most times in a job search, your CV or resume will be the only thing that is evaluated or considered before a decision is made by a corporate recruiter to meet you or not. You need to ensure that it stands out from the crowd and your personal brand statement demonstrates your unique point of difference. As a rough estimate, drafting, reviewing and finalising a professional CV or resume will take on average 8 hours of your time. You might consider this excessive, but isn’t it worth investing the equivalent of just one day to ensure that your years of experience and expertise are represented in the most effective way possible?

Your Personal Brand Action Plan

If you are looking for your next career move make sure that you implement these three steps before you commence an active job search. Before you explore the external market, don’t forget to share your career aspirations with your current line manager. Remember if you do not tell them what you want to achieve in your career and how you can at the same time help them grow the business you are working on now, the chances are that they will never get to learn this. The grass is not always greener in another business, and the opportunity to expand your career could be just a conversation away. If you do decide that the time has come to move on to a new role outside of your current organisation, taking the time to undertake the three steps mentioned in this article will ensure that you are in a strong position to jump start your job search through on-line job boards, recruitment agencies and executive recruiters. If you have a question about how to build your personal brand for career success, do drop me an email and I will answer your questions in a future article. © Krishna De All rights reserved.
