hile I’m writing this today, Super Bowl XLIX is about to begin. This makes me think about how healthy competition can spur people to do great things. In a football game it means one winning team and one losing team. In business, it can lead to innovation and new ideas, keeping the company distinguished from others. My friend, who owns a restaurant in the historic district of a small town, already has this concept down. A new restaurant, with similar menu items is planning to open just a few doors down in a couple of weeks. I asked her if she was worried about losing customers to the new place. Her reply was, “Heck, no, it will only help me make my business better!” She is currently scheduling special events and live music like never before. Workplace competition can also ignite selfimprovement on an individual level. With an office competition, an employee might find the inspiration to be more organized, improve goal-setting strategies or just perform better in general. But it’s important to remember that workplace competition is not equal for all workers. Some people work better under pressure than others, and competition can create rivalries between coworkers, ending up in resentment and increased stress. With extremely competitive people, competition can bring out their worst side. So if you’re going to engage in workplace competition, watch how it affects you and try to make it work for you in only the most positive of ways. CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2015 Black History Month Theme:

A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture

O

ver the past century, African American life, history, and culture have become major forces in the United States and the world. In 1915, few could have imagined that African Americans in music, art, and literature would become appreciated by the global community. Fewer still could have predicted the prominence achieved by African Americans, as well as other people of African descent, in shaping world politics, war, and diplomacy. Indeed, it was nearly universally believed that Africans and people of African descent had played no role in the unfolding of history and were a threat to American civilization itself. A century later, few can deny the centrality of African Americans in the making of American history. This transformation is the result of effort, not chance. Confident that their struggles

mattered in human history, black scholars, artists, athletes, and leaders self-consciously used their talents to change how the world viewed African Americans. The New Negro of the post-World War I era made modernity their own and gave the world a cornucopia of cultural gifts, including jazz, poetry based on the black vernacular, and an appreciation of African art. African American athletes dominated individual and team sports transforming baseball, track-andfield, football, boxing, and basketball. In a wave of social movements, AfricanAmerican activism transformed race relations, challenged American foreign policy, and became the American conscience on human rights. While the spotlight often shines on individuals, this movement is the product of organization, of institutions and institution-builders who gave direction to effort. The National Urban League promoted the Harlem Renaissance. The preservation of the black past became the mission of Arturo Schomburg and Jesse Moorland, leading to the rise of the Schomburg Research Center in Black Culture and Howard University’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. The

vision of Margaret Burroughs and others led to the African American museum movement, leading to the creation of black museums throughout the nation, culminating with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Student activism of the 1960s resulted in the Black Studies Movement and the creation of black professional associations, including the National Council of Black Studies, and a host of doctoral programs at major American universities. At the dawn of these strivings and at all points along the road, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has played a vital role. When he founded the Association in 1915, Carter G. Woodson labored under the belief that historical truth would crush falsehoods and usher in a new era of equality, opportunity, and racial democracy, and it has been its charge for a century. In honor of this milestone, ASALH has selected “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture” as the 2015 National Black History theme. Article provided by asalh100.org

The Pros and Cons of Working in Government THE PROS OF WORKING IN GOVERNMENT

ing health insurance, retirement and vacation, are extremely competitive with, if not superior to, other sectors.

You Need a Job and the Government Is Hiring

Where do you want to work and live? Whatever the answer, chances are you can find federal government work there. Most people think that federal government jobs are all in Washington, D.C., but in fact 84 percent of federal government jobs are outside of the D.C. area. More than 50,000 federal government employees work abroad.

By the end of 2015, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) projects that more than 550,000 federal employees, one third of the entire full-time permanent workforce, will leave the government.

Make A Difference

The work of government employees impacts the lives of every American, and the lives of people around the world. You can play a vital role in addressing pressing issues, from homlessness to homeland security.

Location, Location, Location

Jobs for Every Interest

There are federal jobs suited to every interest and skill, from art history to zoology. Government is also a great place to combine your skills with your interests. For example, you could use your mathematics background and your interest in the environment by working as an accountant at the Environmental Protection Agency, your engineering degree to improve airport security, or your biology degree and interest in medicine to conduct cutting-edge medical research at the National Institutes of Health.

holidays (Columbus Day, anyone?), plus generous vacation and sick leave. All of these packaged together make government an attractive employer if your are looking to have a life outside of work.

Opportunities to Advance and Move Within Government

You will have many opportunities to move up the ladder in government, but you will have to be proactive. Many agencies use Individual Development Plans, as official format for working with your supervisor to plan your short- and long-term career goals within government. An internal Merit Promotion Program helps ensure that once you are in and doing a good job, you will have easy access to information about job openings with in government.

Opportunities for Professional Development

Government managers understand the value of continuing education for their employees, not only to consistently improve the skills of the people already in government, but also as a way to entice people to apply for positions. The government offers excellent training and development opportunities and has human resources personnel to help you connect with these opportunities and choose which courses are right for your career path.

Job Security

Government work is steady and secure, an attractive selling point, especially when economic times are tough.

THE CONS OF WORKING IN GOVERNMENT Bureaucracy Does Exist

For many people, the word government is synonymous with bureaucracy, evoking images of red tape, inefficiency and waste. Sadly, there is some truth to this. Government is huge, and in order to manage all agencies, employees and programs, there is a complex system of rules and procedures in place, which can be frustrating. However, by hiring people who are well matched to their jobs and who bring enthusiasm and a good work ethic to the office, the scope and impact of the bureaucracy can be minimized. However, have you ever seen a large company that doesn’t have bureaucracy and red tape?

The Hiring Process

Often cited as the biggest turn-off for would-be applicants, the hiring process requires patience and persistence. Luckily, there is a concerted government-wide effort underway to improve the hiring process.

You Won’t Get Rich Working in Government

While many government job salaries are comparable to those in the private sector, you are not likely to become extraordinarily wealthy on your government salary, although this depends on your definition of “wealthy.” Many of the government’s top jobs pay annual salaries that range from $117,000 to $177,000, and starting salaries are often comparable to the private sector.

Revolving Door of Leadership

One complaint that some government employees have is that, while government work is not inherently political, it is affected by politics. For example, when a President’s political appointee comes in to an agency and does a good job, his or her peers are frustrated when he or she leaves, only to be replaced by another appointee with different priorities and a different idea of how things should be done. This can leave government workers feeling torn between their agency’s mission and politically driven agendas. However, the number of political appointees is very small compared to the overall number of employees in the federal workforce, and most federal employees have little direct contact with political appointees. Many people go into government to get that much-desired balance of bringing home a nice paycheck, getting great benefits, and having the chance to make a difference. There may be no better place to give back than through government service. Every job, in its essence, is intended to help our country and our world in some way. On the other hand, choosing this path can be tough if you are the kind of person who needs to see immediate results in order to be fulfilled. Real, lasting results are sometimes slow in the making. The process of getting things done takes patience, perseverance and a positive attitude. Article source: gogovernment.org / Partnership for Public Service. The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that believes good government starts with good people. The Partnership’s programs enhance the ability of career services staff and academic advisers to counsel students on career choices and connect campuses with federal agencies.

Interview with A Mechanical Engineer by Dennis Vilorio

What do you do?

I design a building’s interior systems, such as plumbing and security. Using computer software, I make 3-D models of the systems according to a client’s specifications, including budget and time frame. I’m generally hired as part of a team led by the architect who designed the building concept. The team meets with the client to understand details of the job, then spends a lot of time figuring out what systems would work best and who will design each of those systems. Once we complete the models, we submit them to the client for feedback, which we then use to improve the work. We continue revising until the client approves the designs.

What happens once a project gets underway?

Contractors bid on parts of the project, such as building a specific structure. We make sure they follow our specifications and use the proper equipment, but issues always come up. A lot of the work is actually problem solving. For example, I may have to adjust the design if a room feels too hot or a contractor assembles pieces in the wrong order. Completing the project is a long process. The design phase usually takes about a year and a half,

and the construction is another 1 to 2 years. But a big project can take as long as 5 years to finish.

What helped you prepare for your job?

I majored in chemistry for undergrad before deciding it was not for me. Instead, I got a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, hoping to work in the auto industry. After college, I joined the Peace Corps and designed water systems in remote villages in Nepal. These systems weren’t high tech, and the work had nothing to do with mechanical engineering, but it was still a fantastic experience to build things with few resources.

Explain how you got into mechanical engineering.

After Peace Corps, I went back to school to get my master’s degree in civil engineering. To make grad school affordable, I needed to find a professor who would hire me as a research assistant. I found one in the mechanical engineering department, so I switched to mechanical and got my master’s in that. So really, I fell into it. My becoming a mechanical engineer was a twist of fate.

How did you get the job you have now?

When I was in grad school, my thesis advisor introduced me to a partner in this firm. The partner was active in a professional organization, so he would often visit the campus to encourage students to join and participate. I sent him my resume when I graduated, and he offered me a job.

Besides the degrees, do you have any other credentials?

1/26/15 3:43 PM

The EIT signifies that you’ve been working as an engineer for a while and understand the basics. PE certification allows you to sign off on the designs of others. To take the PE exam, you need at least 4 years of experience, and you have to take continuing education to keep the certification.

15 Reasons To Hire A U.S. Military Veteran by Jon Davis, Sergeant of Marines, fought in Iraq during OIF

A

question posted on Quora asked, “What are the advantages of hiring someone who has been in the US military?” Check them out and add yours in the comments below. I am going to speak as a Marine and currently a hiring manager. Here are some positive attributes that come with hiring military service members.

1) M ilitary people have a culture built for mission accomplishment.

There are few people that can add as much constructive diversity as a military veteran. Diversity is something that is sought after in corporations today. The theory is that it gives a company a large base of ideas with which to draw from. This is normally thought of as a racial term, but it can be applied to different backgrounds and even sub-cultures as well. Few cultures have been engineered like the one military veterans have been a part of and even fewer that focuses entirely on mission achievement, cooperation and personal development. The fact is that there is no culture in the world that shapes people in the way the military does. It changes people into something that civilians don’t really understand. What is more important is that it gives them options, mentalities, philosophies a framework that sees opportunities and solves problems that will pass up most civilians. Even more important is that the thoughts going through their minds are centered around finding the problem and fixing it in the fastest ways possible.

2) Leadership is ingrained in Vets.

What many people don’t know is that the United States Marine has an average age of only 19. What? Yes it is incredibly young, but it still needs to be led. Who do you think is doing this? 19 year olds. By the time most people are twenty in the Marines (this goes for the other services as well) they are already an NCO which stands for Non-Commissioned-Officer. Don’t let the the “Non” throw you off. That means “The guy in charge who will make my life Hell if I screw up.” By the age of 20 some kids have already become experts in a field, are teachers to younger members and have led small teams in everything to shop operations to combat operations. By the time I was 22 I was a Sergeant in charge of a team of 13 other Marines who were all occupying very technical jobs in the computer networking and was responsible for overseeing the maintenance and distribution of over $3 million dollars of Marine Corps property. You probably might think that that was stupid, but we pulled it off, with no fanfare and we did that stuff all the time. It wasn’t until I got a degree in Business Management that the civilian world could trust me with doing the same thing because people can’t be trusted with that kind of responsibility so long, but vets do. The fact is though that I could not have done

Page 9

Page 10

equal opportunity employment journal

March 2015

this alone. I had those 13 Marines who did the work and it was my job to coordinate. I had a very solid framework for leadership that include such gems as the 5 Paragraph Order, 6 Troop Leading steps, and the 13 Leadership Traits. These have become pivotal to my personal growth and how I lead others. You really need to google those. It might just make you a better manager just to read them. This stuff doesn’t just leave you once you get out. You want another note on leadership. In the military no one can be fired. That means that you have to get the job done with the idiots God gave you. You are out there for 7-14 months with no replacements and just the same team and all their problems. You have to train them, discipline them, correct them, counsel them and shape them, because you have no other choice. You don’t even get to hire them. That is another reason why vets have such strong leadership skills. Could you honestly say that you could run a company the way the Marines do if you can’t even pick who gets hired and can’t even get rid of the ones who suck? You probably couldn’t, but the military does.

3) Vets understand responsibility.

The military gives young men and women real life and death responsibility and choices before a regular civilian would have graduated college.

NECC is comprised of dedicated individuals who serve in a number of different capacities. We offer competitive salaries, outstanding benefits and a career development program second to none. NECC employs more than 800 professionals, and we believe that workplace diversity is a valuable asset. Our firm commitment to diversity stems from our belief in the benefits of incorporating different backgrounds, perspectives, cultures, and life situations within our organization.

View our latest job postings on our website at:

Most organizations wouldn’t consider this type of thing, but in the military it is common for very young people to be given a great deal of responsibility. You wonder how. This might help. Image you give an 18 year old a rifle and tell him that it is only thing that will protect his life for next seven months. I promise you that rifle will not be lost, broken, damaged and will come back to you polished good as new. I promise. Military people get responsibility because when they were very young there were serious consequences to the decisions they made. Civilians don’t go through this kind of trial by fire and training and many of them don’t make good decisions because of it. The military has given young men and women real life and death responsibility and choices before a regular civilian would have graduated college.

4) Intuition is a skill. It can be learned and the military does it.

What many people think is that leaders are born. Not in the military. The fact is that many people in military are faced with making life and death decisions in the blink of an eye. How do you do that given that there are no pie charts to help you make the decision? Intuition. The Marines and the military train intuition into their culture. You might not even know what intuition really is, well here go. Intuition is the ability to take massive amounts of information and quickly come to a decision from all possible options quickly and correctly. You don’t do it with charts and graphs, you do it by absorbing all the knowledge available to you and making it so readily available that the Marine can access it at any time they wish. They are also able to sort through it and glean the right information

March 2015 without all the non-sense that accompanies most corporate level thinking. This is one of the hardest things in the world to do and most people think you either can or you can’t. False, this is a trainable skill and the vets have it already. You just have to provide the training and watch them succeed in implementing it.

5) M ilitary people will tell you often when something is wrong, even when you don’t like it.

equal opportunity employment journal will fail. If you don’t make it possible for them do their job right they will fail. But given a good vet and a good task, they will never fail you. When you need someone who is willing to work the long hours, do the hard tasks and the seemingly impossible remember that in the back of their heads is “Well at least I’m not getting shot at.” You better damn well thank them though, these aren’t pleasant people when they’re angry.

7) M ilitary people are extremely capable, when given adequate support.

What is important for managers to know is that military people need a great deal of structure to survive in most organizations. They need to be trained well and given a solid framework with which to perform. Otherwise their drive will have them fixing thousands of problems that either aren’t problems or don’t need to be fixed right You need to understand that now. They might even cause new ones because the milithe military are people who tary teaches and encourages such intuitive and drive, but have an incredible amount of if you don’t show them where they need to focus and responsibility, not only for what they need to do then you have created one of those “company property” but for lives. Although people think that you give them an order, they say “Sir, yes, sir!” and run off to their doom, it actually isn’t this way. 8) M ilitary people are extremely independent.

As I mentioned before military vets can be extremely independent. There have been numerous reports that show that military vets are more likely to start their own businesses than other demographic groups. Just ask Trace Evans. They have natural drives to solve complex problems. They think tactically and strategically about problems. If you have given them the training and a framework to work within your organization they will be able to achieve your goals in ways you hadn’t considered before. They are resourceful and know how to use what assets they are given rather than look outside for support. This is what makes them entrepreneurial by nature and can help grow your companies from the inside rather than just be another task follower. Guthrie Job Corps 3106 W. University Guthrie, OK 73044

6) M ilitary people are extremely obedient and get the job done.

Not to dilute #2, but when you do give them a task they will do it provided they have the means and support to do it. If it is safe, sound and smart military will go at the task without the “incentive programs”, “rewards”, “blue jeans days” and all the other things that get in the way of doing business because you hired a bunch of pansies. The fact is that military people know what it means to have something that needs to be done. They have a sense of urgency and have seen the world through a big picture type mentality. If you ask them to do something they aren’t going to complain because it is to tough, to hard or infringes on their break time. The important thing in this is you. If you don’t provide the support they need to do the work, they will fail. If you don’t make wise decisions and ask them to do stupid things, they

Veterans have all the mentalities that good companies want: Tenacity, intuition, reliability. They are capable, responsible, have leadership qualities and are part of a culture built on getting the job done. They are smart and they are serious.

I don’t mean to dog on civilians all the time, but the job I am currently in, by the time I had worked there for no more than a month nearly the entire staff had called out sick at least once, people wouldn’t show up for work, complained incessantly and the worst part...corporate wouldn’t even let me fire them! I know that I said that the Marines and the military in general can’t be fired and that makes vets good leaders, but firing people is a tool and needs to be used. Let’s face it, because of lawyers and HR reps afraid of wrongful termination lawsuits people can get away with murder without being let far to often. This blows the minds of some vets. In the military there are no sick days. I am not exaggerating. You absolutely must come to work and then must go to Sick Call before they will ever acknowledge that there might be something wrong with you. And if it is a PT day you will run three miles before you get to go. When on deployment we also work every day. Every single day. There are no holidays, no weekends, no birthdays. It is the same thing every day. And if you show up late, even by five minutes you will be running for miles or end up digging a massive fighting hole and 300 sandbags in an effort to make the base more secure. So you learn how not to get punished. In the civilian world they don’t reward this behavior, but they also don’t punish the latter. It drives me absolutely nuts. I show up early, stay late

March 2015 and if you ask me to do something I will work hard to do it, or be responsible enough to tell you when I need help. Either way, I can be trusted and given a good vet they can be trusted too.

10) The government pays them to get educated, so you don’t have to.

After the military the government pays military people hand over fist to become more valuable citizens. If you already have one working for you then you can encourage them to get to get that education and gain a valuable future executive or master of a new skill. The best part, you don’t have to pay them to go. Just let them work for you while they go and then a few years later you have a loyal, well educated, hard worker who will be one of the most valuable members of your company. In summary, vets are a special breed. They have all the mentalities that good companies want: Tenacity, intuition, reliability. They are capable, responsible, and have leadership qualities and are part of a culture built on getting the job done. They are smart and they are serious. Seriously, why are all of our vets having such a hard time finding jobs?

By Trace Evans, Served in U.S. Marine Corps

I will not go too far into detail about the advantages of hiring vets, as Jon Davis already did a thorough job in explaining. However, I will offer a few nuggets. Also, I will only speak in regards to the Marine Corps, because I have little to no experience in matters of other branches. Though I would imagine it is roughly the same.

11) Punctual!

After being in the civilian world for almost a year now I am AMAZED how few people are punctual. In the Marines if you are not 15 minutes early, you are late! I have applied this to every appointment or event I have a responsibility to be at. I was, as I said, blown away being the first one there for the first 15+ minutes. People arrive on the dot, or even late! If I am late to something I WILL have a good reason. This is the case with most Marines, because if they didn’t have a reason then they would be in trouble. Traffic or “sleeping in” was never a reason. See number 2.

Marines are required to be respectful to everyone. In boot camp Drill Instructors basically say you are less than everyone, civilian or Marine. Then, in the fleet you are required to address superiors by rank and last name. Disrespect was met with Non-Judicial Punishment. 12) Planning

This sort of has a little to do with number 1. Marines are drilled constantly with the acronym ORM (Operational Risk Management). Every weekend it’s ORM. This applies to everything we do. As I said in the number 1, if you are late you better have a reason. Well, sometimes even with a reason superiors would throw the term ORM in your face. Rightfully so. ORM is the process of taking a task, mission, event, activity, etc. and planning it out to prevent anything negative from happening by foreseeing what could go wrong.

13) Patience

Oh, do Marines have patience! The Marine Corps is full of “hurry up and wait.” This means we are hurried along, and rushed, and worked like the world is going to end. Then, we wait and wait and wait. There have been times where I would show up at 3:30 AM and not do anything until noon. So, I developed patience. In fact that is one of the leadership traits “Endurance.”

14) Respect

Marines are required to be respectful to everyone. In boot camp Drill Instructors basically say you are less than everyone, civilian or Marine. Then, in the fleet you are required to address superiors by rank and last name. Disrespect was met with Non-Judicial Punishment. I have always been respectful, but after the Marines I am more so.

15) Timeliness

If a Marine is given a task it is expected to be done in a timely manner. During my deployment my superiors were notorious for 30 min. They would give me tasks that should take hours, and say they wanted it in 30 minutes! See Jon Davis’ answer with Mission Accomplishment, and the picture. Marines will not stop until it is done. Basically, it can be summed up in 14 words: Justice, Judgement, Dependability, Initiative, Decisiveness, Tact, Integrity, Enthusiasm, Bearing, Unselfishness, Courage, Knowledge, Loyalty, Endurance. Social Work Students: How to Find Your Dream Field Placement

S

by Jack McGovern

wamped with school assignments—never mind work and personal obligations—the idea of finding a field placement is overwhelming for many social work students.

What kind of field placement will increase your social work practice skills and future chances of employment?

Field placements are not only a requirement to complete your social work degree, they’re also realworld classrooms where you practice your skills with experienced social workers. If you find a wonderful field placement, you will quickly develop your skills as a practicing social worker. In addition, a great field placement experience connects you with working professionals, possibly landing you a job after graduation. So how do you find the field placement that’s best for you? Many social work students are unprepared to deal with their field placement office, the school department in charge of linking students with local agencies for an internship. Social work students mistakenly assume field placement advisors will cater to student preferences. This is not always true.

Social work field placement offices are usually understaffed, overworked and barely funded. Short on time, most field placement advisors won’t look over your profile or agency preferences before meeting with you. Instead, they will likely open a giant binder, or computer file, and try to pair you with the first local agency available on their list. The mission of field placement staff is to have all social work students placed in an agency as quickly as possible, regardless of an appropriate match. With that in mind, you should do your homework before meeting with your advisor. Answer these questions: What kind of field placement will increase your social work practice skills and future chances of employment? Which agency has an established history of training and hiring social work interns? Don’t rely on school advisors to arrange your social work internship. Take the burden off yourself, and the staff, by researching and lining up your own field placement options in advance. If you haven’t already done so, you should reach out directly to social workers at your dream agency. If they’re amenable, arrange a meeting so they can share their experiences and roles within their organization with you. Explain your goals and future plans as a social worker. Will they put in a good word for you? Or talk with other social work students who have carried out field placements at your dream agency. Can they pass along some tips or introduce you to a supervisor? Finally, keep in mind that social work is a professional discipline. Social work educational programs aim to prepare responsible and resourceful social workers for practice beyond the classroom. By taking the initiative in your search for an amazing field placement, you’re already burnishing your skills as a great social worker. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Gender Equality in the Workforce by Susan M. Keenan

Are men and women equal in the workforce? If not, is it possible that certain reasons besides discrimination can be responsible for this? Gender equality has been an issue in the world for centuries. Typically, men are paid more for their time, skill, and efforts in the workplace than most women are paid. Why is this? Are there facets that hold a woman back on the pay scale that have nothing to do with societal perspective but rather have almost everything to do with the life choices made by women today? Is it possible that the choice a woman makes partly determines her earning ability? Are women making conscious or unconscious decisions that are holding them back financially as well as preventing them from obtaining positions of power?

Gender Equality in the Workforce and the Choice of a College Major

www.eoejournal.com

Perhaps the major that women select while attending college negatively impacts their representation in the workforce as well as their ability to earn at a comparable level to their male counterparts. For example, according to the Taulbee Survey conducted by the Computing Research Association, the percentage of women earning degrees in the filed of Computer Science remained in the low teens over the course of the years falling between 2004 and 2008. Without those degrees, it only stands to reason that there will be far fewer women within the computer science employment arena. Are these findings surprising? To some individuals, these results might be a bit surprising, but to those who believe that men are more commonly associated with a reliance on their playthings including gaming systems and computers than women, they are not surprising at all. In fact, some studies have indicated that women are noted to favor other endeavors.

equal opportunity employment journal Why is this true or even simply suggested as being true? Perhaps women favor careers that blend more easily with the role of motherhood. Perhaps women simply like other interests. Whatever the reasons are, it leads to women favoring degrees in certain fields while men tend to favor degrees in other fields of study.

Gender Equality in the Workforce and Career Choices

Women often need to look for careers that will allow them to drop the kids off from school, run them to dance class or sporting events, and still have time to get home and make dinner.

The specific career that a woman chooses to follow is going to directly affect her earning ability. Choosing lower-paying careers is going to result in a smaller salary and less income than choosing a higher-paying career. While men might also choose lower-paying careers than women, studies have indicated that women do so more frequently.

We seek genuine individuals for our Loews Hotel jobs who are able to engage and delight our guests by providing Four Diamond AND MORE service.

March 2015

Women often need to look for careers that will allow them to drop the kids off from school, run them to dance class or sporting events, and still have time to get home and make dinner. After all, this is the role that society has given to women. Women have been housewives for centuries. This fact somewhat limits the ability of women to apply for the type of cutting-edge career they might want and still be able have time to raise a family.

Gender Equality in the Workforce and Maternity Leave

While discrimination is not supposed to happen anymore, it probably still does. Many women lose time in the workforce due to maternity leave. Employers might subconsciously or even consciously promote a man rather than a woman if he knows that she has children or plans to have children. Promotions lead to higher salaries. Therefore, women have a lower earning capacity if they do not get promoted. Is it possible that society has been programmed to believe that men should receive a higher salary simply because history has proven this to be the case? Maybe and maybe not. Either way, despite the fact that some graduate degrees are the same, the pay scale remains disparate between men and women. Perhaps women don’t aim as high as men when salary expectations come into play after all. Perhaps they should. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Are Listening Skills–and Decent Customer Service–Lost in this Generation’s Fresh Graduates? by Michelle A. Riklan, ACRW, CPRW, CEIC, CJSS

Not Listening

Here’s a typical scene every time I go through a Dunkin Donuts drive-thru… Me: One medium hot latte with skim milk Crew: Okay, would you like it hot or cold? Me: Hot (okay…he’s too young to be deaf) Crew: Whole or skim milk? Me: Skim milk (getting impatient here…) Every. Single. Time. And that was just a single item order. What is it with kids these days? Are they even taking their summer job seriously? Yes I know internships and summer jobs pay barely minimum wage but it’s not just about the money. Sadly, this realization is lost on so many young employees. Summer jobs build up your soft-skills, particularly listening and customer service skills—without which it would be very difficult for you to get a good job after college.

Why are so many young employees poor listeners?

HOW TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF THE TECH-SAVVY GENERATION Choose Someone You Admire and Really Pay Attention to them

Commit yourself to listening to that person for the whole day. Don’t just hear; use all five senses to listen. Observe the speaker’s diction, body language, and tone of voice. Pay attention to what they say as well as what they don’t say. At the end of the day, try to recall as much of what the person said, including their nonverbal cues. The more you recall, the better your listening has improved. This listening and focus exercise will change bad habits like multi-listening and spacing out in the midst of a conversation.

Mind-Body Secrets for College Success – Six Key Secrets

ollege is a demanding challenge. The role of the physical body is key to peak performance. Strong study habits and academic discipline are most productive when performed by a brain and a body well fueled and precisely tuned. The six key secrets of mindbody performance are:

Secret #1: Focused Nutrition

Superior brainpower requires high quality fuel. The brain is fueled by oxygenation, hydration and proper nutrition, namely carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are transformed into glycogen within the body, fueling the muscles and the brain. The brain uses 50% of the body’s available glycogen and even more when under stress (like during exams). Despite protein’s reputation as “brain food”, complex carbohydrates are a far superior fuel. Aim for a mix of 2/3 complex carbohydrates and 1/3 protein in your meals and snacks.

Secret #2: Diet Downfalls

Despite the popularity of low-carb weight-loss plans, one of the largest contributors to poor mental performance is a diet low in complex carbohydrates. Sugary, fatty, and many protein heavy foods are poor quality brain fuel. Sugar increases anxiety while providing a jittery, scattered rush of energy, followed by a dramatic crash in energy, thinking ability and sometimes mood. Fats and protein slow the brain and create foggy thinking. It is much better to save the cheeseburger or steak until after the exam or power-study session.

by Karen B. Cohen

Secret #3: Ample Hydration

Proper hydration is another secret component to boosting brainpower. Brain tissue itself is 85% water, and the brain is quite sensitive to dehydration. Ample hydration allows the brain to function most efficiently, much like grease on gears. Conversely, dehydration slows the brain and is a major factor in fatigue. Reach for a tall glass of spring water rather than a caffeinated beverage, as it will serve you better as a student needing energy and focus.

Secret #4: Essential Exercise

Exercise relieves the body of stress and it’s by-products to create clearer, more creative thinking. Exercise trains the body to handle stress as well as aiding in recovering from stress. Yoga, Chi Gung or a nature walk help soothe nerves and re-focus the mind when you feel pressured or anxious. There is a physiology to our emotions and it is well established that we learn and perform better when we feel good. Exercise is a major key to peak performance that powerfully supports academic and personal success both in college and in life.

Secret #5: Quality Sleep

However, it is essential. We need at least seven hours sleep for peak performance. Studies actually show that “early to bed, early to rise” really does create success. This may be quite a challenge at school, but keep it in mind.

Secret #6: Deep Relaxation

While socializing and ‘partying’ has it’s traditional place in college life, they do not fulfill the requirements of “deep relaxation.” Develop your own repertoire of spirit-feeding, body-soothing activities like nature walks, deep breathing exercises, meditating or yoga practice. Eventually you will be able to precisely read your body’s signals and take meaningful action to enhance your talents and abilities despite any outer stress or circumstance. While academic discipline and strong study habits are indisputably key factors in college success, there is a powerful ‘secret tool’ at work at the very foundation of all our efforts. Achieving meaningful success at college, both academically and personally, requires a holistic approach. All mental and emotional strategies we may employ are deeply affected by our core foundation: the physical body.

Step 4: P rocess New Information: REDUCE PROCESSING TIME

Streamline your information flow, and you’ll inevitably cut back on your time expenditures. Make setting up an efficient filing system one of your first tasks. Develop a simple, noun-based labeling scheme, and apply it rigorously to your electronic and paper files. No document should ever take you more than a minute or so to find. You’ll also need a reliable personal time management system—some variety of organizer, whether paper, electronic, or hybrid, where you can keep track of all your schedules and contacts. Just make sure it meets the HUG criteria: it must be Handy, Usable, and Garbage-free. Involuntary data inflow, especially email and phone calls, will likely represent a bigger problem. You can cut back on their influence by limiting your exposure to just a few times per day and processing your inboxes down to zero each time you do check, triaging on the fly. Because most work arrives via email, you should follow some foundational principles to reduce processing time: • The Superglue Rule • The Decisiveness Rule • The Start-to-Finish Rule • The Three-Minute Rule • The Empty Inbox Rule • The Discipline Rule

When you use these rules in conjunction with my original 6-D Information Processing System™, you can reduce the time you spend handling your inflowing information to a much more manageable level.

Step 5: C lose the Loop: REDUCE INEFFICIENCIES

over-delivering—both a waste of time and energy. Micromanagers represent a special case. No amount of productivity training and time management finesse can save you from a micromanager’s ego trip if you don’t take the bully by the horns ASAP. If they hinder your workflow, confront them about it; they may back off. Otherwise, find ways to work around them—or find a job elsewhere. Whether a blockage is human, processoriented, or mechanical, never hesitate to step in and try to fix it. If you can’t find a way to do so, then go around it and move on to things you can fix. Teamwork is crucial here. Do your best to ease the way for everyone involved. In addition to helping the team develop work plans, set and achieve milestones, and reach deadlines, ensure stability by establishing contingency plans to handle crises and other emergencies, such as unexpected absences.

Next, reduce your inefficiencies by determining what does and doesn’t work for you. Constantly refine your workflow processes, reworking or replacing components if they break down or just don’t seem as efficient as they might be. Other people may present your most difficult barriers to closing the loop. Since you can’t control the actions of your co-workers, try to make your interactions with them easier. Start with precision communication that cuts down on unproductive “noise” like hedging and passive language. Get right to the point and ask for acknowledgement on everything. If Step 6: M anage Your Capacity: REDUCE ENERGY you don’t completely understand what someEXPENDITURES one asks of you, keep asking questions until you do. Therefore, Step 6 focuses on keeping yourself physically and mentally fit, through a combination of good sleep, diet, exercise, and preservation of personal happiness. Taken together, these form the hub that links and strengthens the other PWF steps. Begin by recognizing the limits of your personal “battery.” You can only go so far before you run out of energy, so know when to slow down and recharge. Don’t skip your scheduled breaks—stretch breaks, meals, personal time, weekends, and vacations—or fatigue may eventually overwhelm you. You can’t stay productive if you don’t get good, restorative sleep every night. Like it or not, your muscles require rest, your body chemistry needs time to reset, and your subconscious mind has to process new information. Do your best to encourage sleep on a regular schedule by establishing a peaceful environment, and avoid using your bedroom as an office. Excess weight will also drag you down, so keep an eye on your diet, focusing on portion control and energyboosting foods. Pair that with regular exercise. This can include anything from “subversive” activities you can engage in while going about your normal workday (like taking the stairs rather than the elevator), to working out at the gym twice a week.

You can only go so far before you run out of energy, so know when to slow down and recharge. Don’t forget your mental health. If you can’t maintain a high level of enthusiasm for your work, you can’t stay at your productive best. Seek out happiness by making empowered choices, surrounding yourself with fun things, spending time with your family, doing nice things for people, cherishing yourself, and finding ways to laugh at adversity. All this will help you maintain a fresh, cando attitude.

There’s no doubt your career is important: you spend more than half of your waking life either working or preparing to. But you can’t let it override everything else. For the sake of your mental and physical health—not to mention your friends and family—you’ve got to curb your workaholic tendencies. Yes, working 70-hour weeks can make you fantastically productive...in the short term. But over time, you’ll wear down to a ghost of your former self. Eventually something will break, and suddenly, your productivity will drop to nil. Like an overpowered light bulb, you’ll produce a lot of heat and light for a while, but suddenly you’ll burn out, much sooner than you should. Even if that doesn’t happen, don’t fool yourself: no matter how hard you work today, you can’t guarantee corporate leadership will remember your sacrifice tomorrow. You might end up with a pink slip anyway. Rather than grow old and break down before your time, implement my Productivity Workflow Formula in your career. These six steps are logical, straightforward, and can help you reduce your workload to a reasonable level, resulting in a work/life balance you can live with over the long haul. Sure, hard work may be good for the soul—but moderation will keep you healthy.

7 Habits of Less Successful Salespeople

W

hat can you do to be more successful in sales? What can you learn from others? Sometimes it’s what to avoid doing. These examples are mistakes that will cost you business.

1. Thinking you can do it all yourself. Selling used to be a numbers game. In the past you could spend your time smiling and dialing and that might have worked. Today too many people are too busy to listen to a pitch. Cold calls are a low probability and only worth your time if your time isn’t worth very much. The assistance sales people need from others is good solid leads and referrals to

meet new customers. 2. Talking too much. Some salespeople think that the best salespeople are the best talkers. That’s not true. The best sellers are great listeners and they use silence well. Silence is really golden in selling. Use it when you want your customers to talk more. Silence is appropriate when you are listening so you don’t interrupt your customer. It’s appropriate to use when you think about what your customer is saying. This will enable you to give him a thoughtful response. 3. Doing the same things in all situations. One of the predictors of success is flexibility or the ability to do different things in different situations. Some salespeople start their sales calls the same way and act the same way with every type of customer. Customers are different and the salesperson needs to respond to the type of customer he is talking to. It is appropriate to get right down to business in a sales call with an assertive, more emotionally controlled customer. It is inappropriate to do the same with a customer who is less assertive and more responsive.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE AROUND THE WORLD. Armacell is a global innovator in foam technologies and the world leader in flexible mechanical insulation materials. Armacell produces Armaflex®, the most trusted brand in flexible, fiber-free mechanical insulation, as well as specialty component foams for automotive, medical, industrial and athletic applications.

4. Expecting things to happen NOW. Patience is a virtue that salespeople especially need. Some things do take time. If you want a piece of business badly enough you may have to be persistent and try to make contact over a period of months. Be patient and don’t give up if the account is worth it. Negotiating may take time and impatience to close a deal can cost you money. Salespeople have to be able to deal with ambiguity and the unknown. Your patience is your power when it’s combined with persistence. 5. Not telling the truth. Salespeople need to be honest not only with customers, but with themselves as well. Some salespeople fool themselves that a sale is going to happen when the odds are it’s not. They tell their manager the sale will close soon because they hope it will. If a customer is still thinking when they could have said yes, it’s time to move on to the next account. Be honest with yourself. Let go and get going to the next prospect. 6. Not taking good care of customers. Selling isn’t asking a question to find objections and then beating your customer into submission for each objection. If it’s not a reasonable fit, forget the sale. Find the prospects that do need your benefits and value. 7. Thinking it’s easy. People think selling is easy only because the great salespeople make it look easy. I recently spoke with a sales master who sold upwards of $50 million worth of construction contract surety bonds over the years. He said he never prepares for a sales call. When I asked him what he meant he said that when he makes a sales call he knows a few things about the prospect’s business and general requirements. Then he asks questions about the areas he thinks might apply. I replied, “You may think you don’t prepare, but you’re using 30 years of preparation to sell.” Selling is only easy when you don’t know what you’re doing. You can learn from your mistakes. It’s even better to learn from other people’s mistakes. Avoid these mistakes and you will make your selling more successful. Article provided by www.bestatselling.com/

plenty of career options. Workers in healthcare do tasks such as scheduling patient appointments, drawing blood for laboratory work, cleaning facilities, preparing food, diagnostic testing, and filling prescriptions. This section highlights employment, wages, and projected new jobs in selected occupations for each of the detailed healthcare industries. May 2013 employment and wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics survey and are for wage and salary workers only. (The median wage is the point at which half of all wage and salary workers in the occupation made more than that amount, and half earned less.) Occupations listed below by occupational group include those that had at least 50,000 jobs in May 2013. Many other occupations have jobs in these detailed industries too,but they had fewer jobs and are not listed. There are lots of ways to start a career in healthcare. Specific skills, education and training, and other preparation—such as licenses, certification, or registration—are often required.

Skills

Good people skills are essential, because workers in the healthcare industry spend a lot of time interacting with patients and colleagues. Workers also need patience and emotional stability. “You really have to care about people,” says Brummett. “It’s that compassion, that empathy, decade. that makes people good at their jobs.” Other occupations projected to add many jobs in this detailed industry, It’s also important to be a team player, as these workers collaborate in addition to those in the chart, are general office clerks, medical and when delivering care. Being able to communicate with people of diverse health services managers, physical therapists, healthcare social workers, backgrounds is also key. and occupational therapists.

Outpatient, Laboratory, and Other Ambulatory Care Services

Schedules and working conditions for occupations in this detailed industry vary. Jobs in outpatient care centers and medical and diagnostic laboratories, for example, often involve standard work hours in routine settings. In contrast, jobs in ambulance services can have unpredictable work hours and settings, because emergencies can happen anytime and nearly anywhere. Employment. Only three occupations had enough employment to make the cutoff of more than 50,000 jobs each in outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services in May 2013. The occupations in these groups made up about 24 percent of total employment in this detailed industry: Health diagnosing and treating practitioners • Registered nurses Health technologists and technicians • Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics Healthcare support • Phlebotomists Occupational wages. According to BLS, May 2013 median annual wages in outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services ranged from $21,540 for personal care aides to more than $187,200 for psychiatrists and surgeons.

Education and Training

Building the foundation for a career in healthcare often starts long before you prepare for a specific occupation. As early as high school, you should study algebra, biology, chemistry, and related subjects. “Taking math and science classes is important to just about any health profession,” says Adams. In addition, most occupations in healthcare require education beyond high school. But the paths people take to enter an occupation vary. For example, there are several ways to become a registered nurse. Many registered nurses prepare by earning an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. Other registered nurses earn a diploma from an approved nursing program or a master’s degree in nursing. There are lots of education programs for careers in healthcare. Make sure a school’s credentials are up to date and that their program has a good reputation before you sign up. “Do your research,” says Hahn. “You don’t want to pay more than you should for a degree you need, only to find out that no hospital will sponsor you for a residency.” In addition to education, some healthcare occupations require on-thejob training—such as a residency, employer-sponsored training program, or informal training combined with experience on the job. Other occupations require work experience in a related occupation. BLS helps to clarify occupational requirements by assigning the typical level of education or training workers need to attain competency and

• General dentists • General internists • General pediatricians • Medical scientists, except epidemiologists • Obstetricians and gynecologists • Oral and maxillofacial surgeons • Orthodontists • Pharmacists • Physical therapists • Psychiatrists • Surgeons Many of these occupations also require a residency—on-the-job training that is often required for state licensure or certification. Residency programs typically last from between 1 to 2 years for dental specialties and pharmacists to between 3 to 8 years for physicians and surgeons. Other preparation Workers in some healthcare occupations need a state-issued license, certification, or registration. Other ways to get ready for a healthcare career include gaining firsthand experience and learning more about careers. Licenses, certifications, and registrations. To work in some healthcare occupations—especially those that treat or care for patients—workers need a license, certification, or registration. Requirements may differ by state, depending on the occupation. For example, all states require physicians and surgeons to be licensed, but states vary in their requirements for nursing assistants. In some states, nursing assistants must be on a state registry; in others, they must become certified nursing assistants. Earning a license, certification, or registration often involves completing an approved education or training program and passing a competency exam. Sometimes, workers must also pass a background check, and people with a criminal history might not be eligible to work in certain occupations. Career exploration. As with most industries, getting practical experience in healthcare is usually helpful for deciding on—or against—a career. “It’s not like what you see on TV,” says Hahn. “Some people get into it and discover it’s not for them.” Volunteering, part-time jobs, and internships are great ways to get a feel for what healthcare work is really like—and to gain knowledge and start making contacts. “Ask family members or guidance counselors if they know of anyone who works in healthcare,” says Drake. “Start to network, and ask workers for informational interviews to find out about entry-level positions.” The more you know about the occupations in healthcare, the easier it will be to identify those that best fit your interests and skills.“Learn about what each of the health professions does,” says Adams. “A lot of times we have our own perceptions about what people do, which may not be accurate.” Deciding on a healthcare occupation to pursue could be the starting point to a rewarding career. “Knowing that every day you’ve made someone’s life better,” says Adams, “there’s a huge value to that.”

For More Information

The occupations in this article aren’t the only ones with jobs in healthcare. Many other occupations have thousands of jobs in the industry. For example, cardiovascular technologists and technicians—although not discussed in this article—are employed in settings such as hospitals, offices of health practitioners, and outpatient, laboratory, and other ambulatory care services. In addition, jobs in the occupations mentioned in this article exist in industries outside of healthcare. For example, pharmacists work in department stores, grocery stores, and health and personal care stores as well as in hospitals, offices of health practitioners, and other healthcare industries. mentor made the difference at the start of Thuy Vu’s career. If not for the encouragement of her mentor, Thuy wouldn’t have pursued the master’s degree that is critical to professional development in her field. In her jobs at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Thuy coordinates and directs projects related to cancer research. The jobs overlap, with both focusing on analyzing data and sharing research results for preventing cancer and promoting good health. Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies the type of work Thuy does as that of a health educator, her job tasks differ from most of the health educators she knows. Other health educators with whom Thuy collaborates have more direct interaction with patients than she does in her research-based work. Job guidance from a mentor can be helpful. But it was especially important to Thuy, whose mentor helped her from the beginning to become involved in research and in promoting good health. In an occupation like Thuy’s, which can vary from one job to another, under-

standing why her work matters was a key factor in pursuing this career.

What Do You Do?

I research cancer prevention and promote good health, help communities understand research data and how to use it, and promote best practices (ways of doing the same thing in different situations) that are based on evidence. I work with academic researchers, healthcare professionals, community groups, and state and local health departments. For example, one of my projects is to evaluate a national colorectal cancer screening program. (A screening is a type of exam to detect disease in people, even when they have no symptoms.) There are guidelines that outline evidencebased strategies for promoting colorectal cancer screening. I’m working with a team to identify which strategies the states are using and to study how states are adapting and using the strategies. We hope this information helps us to understand ways that these strategies can be used with different populations and in different settings to increase colorectal cancer screening rates.

How Did You Get These Jobs?

Through networking and word of mouth. But the work I do now has evolved from what I was originally hired to do. Initially, my experience was in designing educational, intervention, and recruitment materials that would be tested in the field. Now, my focus is more on evaluating and sharing results.

How Does Your Education Tie In?

My bachelor’s degree is in political science, with a minor in public health and community medicine. The job tasks themselves reflect my minor field of study, but the political science gives me an understanding of the policy behind the work. I also have an MPH (master of public health) degree with training in the social and behavioral sciences. During grad school, I held a graduatestudent appointment that required a practicum (supervised, hands-on experience) at a cancer research center. I had been exposed to a lot of the MPH curriculum before grad school because of my job, but grad school brought together everything I’d already been doing and gave me the perspective to fully understand it. The only reason I have my MPH is because of my mentor, Deb, who was the principal investigator of a research group I was part of. Deb made me understand the importance of having a graduate degree in this field. I had no interest in going back to school after college until she encouraged me to get my master’s.

Page 37

firm. The head of the firm was very helpful to me when I got an offer elsewhere for a fulltime “ . . .get hands-on experience job. He took on a “big brother” role to help me with things like negotiating a salary and benthrough a practicum, internship, efits. The job itself didn’t necessarily influence or volunteer opportunity.” my future career plans. But what was meaningful to me was having someone be so supportive Deb was a phenomenal mentor who took the even as I was leaving. I got that same kind of nurturing of younger staff very seriously. I felt support, and more, from Deb later on. like I was such a priority in her life. Along with What Else Led You To helping me develop in my career, she taught Your Current Job? Once, when I was almost finished with my me to have confidence in myself, nurtured my bachelor’s, I was home on break and talking interests, and counseled me. Deb really gave me about school. Someone asked what I was inter- opportunities that made me understand the world ested in, and I said, “Psychology.” After I got of research and working with communities. back to school, I wondered why I’d said that—I was a political science major and had taken only one psychology class. But I think I knew even then that I had an interest in understanding behavior. And in the field, in my job, working in the community, the behavioral science part has been a critical piece. The hard part about science is that what works in research works in a vacuum. But interacting with other people is what’s illuminating and informative. It’s the human part that can really throw a wrench in the scientific data.

Any Surprises Along The Way?

The piece that’s been most surprising to me is the value placed on mentoring in the academic research community. I’m humbled by the passion and seriousness of mentors, especially the degree of their dedication in helping younger What Was Your First Job researchers to grow. I’m where I am today out of College? I had a temporary job with a small accounting because of Deb.

What’s Your Best Advice?

Actively peruse job postings to strengthen your skill set. If you see a posting for a job that you think looks interesting, dissect it to see what the job really is, what skills are required, and what is required to get those skills. Try to build up your skill set based on those known criteria, or at least study the job posting and know what’s involved so you can speak intelligently about it. Beyond that, get hands-on experience through a practicum, internship, or volunteer opportunity. More broadly, my advice is to find somebody who is willing to take you under his or her wing to teach you and support you. Ideally, a mentor might be able to provide opportunities to grow, but it’s important to understand that a mentor’s job is not to get you, or give you, a job. A good mentor can be invaluable in jumpstarting a career. Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Top 10 Jobs in Information Technology I

nformation technology–often shortened to just IT–is a buzz phrase you’ve probably heard ad nauseum if you happen to work with IT personnel or went to school for anything related to computers. IT workers are highly specialized in their field, which is probably why they’re often just called “IT nerds.” They like what they do and understand it inside and out. Healthcare Jobs Are Picking Up T

The question now being asked is whether the up-tick in healthcare jobs is the result of an expanding industry or just a matter of the industry making adjustments in response to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Common sense seems to dictate it is the latter of the two choices. The ACA has resulted in some very profound changes in the way healthcare services will be delivered for years to come. It only makes sense that it would also affect hiring in both the short and long terms. Some speculate that hiring has not been as robust as it should have been over the last couple of years while we all waited to see what the effects of the ACA would be. In addition, there were those who painted a picture rosier than was appropriate when the ACA was first made law, failing to take into account that it would take several years to implement it. The

Hiring Trends – Where Will They Go?

So far this year it appears as though the biggest winners in the healthcare jobs race have been physician offices, home healthcare companies, and healthcare IT firms. No one knows for sure if these trends will continue in 2015 and beyond, but there is plenty of optimism to go around. Where physician offices are concerned, the primary care doctor and his or her physician assistant and nurse practitioner are the backbone of the U.S. healthcare system. All three positions will be in greater demand if 30 million new people do in fact begin accessing healthcare as a result of the ACA. It is unavoidable. Meanwhile, an aging population and the pending retirement of the first wave of baby boomers should increase the need for home healthcare services over the next several decades, while healthcare IT has already proven to be a vital asset in trying to marry the ACA with the HITECH Act of 2009. Between the both of them, there should be no shortage of healthcare jobs over the next 5 to 10 years. Article provided by blog.hospitaldreams.com. All the best healthcare jobs in one place!

combination of factors perhaps created an illusion that healthcare was not hiring as many people as it should while, in reality, hiring remained at an appropriate level all along. Regardless of which camp you fall into, nothing changes the fact that healthcare jobs are picking up once again. The increased hiring is expected to continue into next year, as 2015 marks the beginning of the employer mandate. If the 30 million number (the number of individuals estimated to access healthcare services as a result of the ACA) is ever going to be reality, it will happen in 2015. If it does not happen next year, it is not likely to happen unless something else changes.

he latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) are good news for the healthcare industry. Steady growth in October and November indicate that the number of healthcare jobs being created is once again picking up steam after several years of less-than-expected growth. Things look very good heading into 2015. Here are some of the raw numbers from the BLS: 28,500 hospital jobs added so far this year 4,300 hospital jobs added in November alone 261,000 new hires over the last 12 months. Most impressive is the fact that the traditional doctor’s office led the way between October and November this year. Statistics show physician offices added about 6,600 jobs. Home healthcare added an additional 5,000 jobs during the same period as well. Unfortunately, nursing homes and assisted living facilities continue to show gradual decline.

“NEW YEAR” “NEW RATES” 2014

by Katharine Hansen, Ph.D.

ou probably know that communicating your accomplishments is an important aspect of your job search, but if you were asked right now to list several top achievements, could you do it? Many people can’t, and the reasons -- social and psychological -- that most people are at a loss when it comes to identifying their accomplishments is the subject of this article. Most people don’t think about accomplishments until something changes the status quo of their lives. Few people take their first job out of school and start jotting down their accomplishments. Who has time? Recording accomplishments just isn’t a priority for most people. For many people, the accomplishments issue comes up when they suddenly find themselves in a new job situation. They’ve been unexpectedly fired or downsized. Perhaps they’ve worked for the same employer for many years. They’ve had no compelling reason to keep track of their accomplishments because they haven’t had to update their resumes or look for a new job. As a resume writer, I was often approached by clients who said they had not needed a resume for many years -- either because they had not changed jobs or because they had always attained new jobs through networking or being recruited. Even when a job situation is stable, we’re not thinking about accomplishments until something occurs in the job that warrants such reflection. “Often people don’t pay attention to their accomplishments until performancereview time,” says Carol Johnson, owner of Plan B Consulting in Derby, CT.

We Can’t Remember What We’ve Accomplished

Because most of us haven’t tracked accomplishments from the beginning or thought much about them along the way, we have no easy way of remembering achievements when we truly need to. If you were asked for your top accomplishments from three jobs ago, could you come up with them? Can you even list more than a handful of accomplishments from your current job? If not, you’re not alone. Sometimes it’s hard even to remember the accomplishments of the past day, as Glen Stansberry notes: “We often forget the things that we got done during the day for lots of reasons. We’re taught at an early age that what we do isn’t as important as what we didn’t do. After all, what we don’t get done often impacts us more in work and other social settings. This [mindset] causes us to automatically shove the stuff we did accomplish into the back of our minds, and fret about the undone,” he writes in his article, “5 Reasons to Keep a Work Diary.”

We’re not Sure We’ve Done Anything Worthy of Being Called an Accomplishment

“Most people are not self-aware of what they bring to the table each day or who they really are,” notes Cheryl Roshak, CPC, transition and career coach and president of Cheryl Roshak Associates. “People don’t recognize their own accomplishments for what they are,” agrees Indianapolis-based corporate recruiter Todd Rogers, “or they confuse accomplishments with their job responsibilities.” On a resume, job candidates will list bullet points detailing their job description, observes Gregg Podolski, accounting and finance recruiter for Emerson Group, instead of listing accomplishments. “Yet when I ask a few probing questions, they are almost always able to tell me something they did that earned them praise or was above and beyond the call of duty; yet it was part of their routine so they didn’t recognize it for what it was,” Podolski says. We sometimes think what we’ve done is not good enough, nothing special, too small to count, or not anything that would impress anyone. “Are you convincing yourself something isn’t good enough when, in fact, any more objective onlooker would convince you otherwise?” asks author and career expert Miriam Salpeter of Keppie Careers.

Workers aren’t just starved for praise; they are deprived of feedback of any kind from colleagues and superiors in the workplace, says Kiana Wilson, PHR, GCDF, of Tampa, FL. “Many people go through their day-to-day responsibilities without any regard to what they are truly accomplishing. Why do people not believe they’ve done anything accomplishmentsworthy? Sometimes an accomplishment just isn’t up to our own expectations, so we discount it. Another reason is the way achievements are treated in the workplace—the message that no one is indispensable, explains educator and consultant Leri M. Thomas, PhD. “Workers aren’t typically praised every time they do something exceptional,” Thomas says. “If they were, from an employer’s perspective, they’d want more compensation. I remember being told that I could be replaced by anyone on the street. So, in the industrial work place, which is still the prevailing culture, managers devalue achievement as a means to hold the bottom line down.” Workers aren’t just starved for praise; they are deprived of feedback of any kind from colleagues and superiors in the workplace, says Kiana Wilson, PHR, GCDF, of Tampa, FL. “Many people go through their dayto-day responsibilities without any regard to what they are truly accomplishing. It is only through continuous feedback that these individuals come to realize the magnitude of their contributions and subsequently their accomplishments along the way. Without this feedback, many are left scrambling through their work duties to determine what impact, if any, they have made,” Wilson notes. Many people believe that success is expected of them. Many, like me, grew up without earning much praise from parents for accomplishments because they were simply doing what their parents expected them to do. Excellence was nothing out of the ordinary. “For many overachievers, success, work ethic, and striving to be better than everyone else are second nature,” observes Patrick K. Hollister, a sales manager with Panasonic. (On the flip side, of course, are those who are accustomed to lavish praise for everything and consequently feel a need to broadcast every accomplishment. “Gen Y and Z tend to live each day to tell everyone how awesome they are,” asserts Jennifer Cash, an operations professional and LinkedIn contributor, “and can easily blog about what they did as if everything they did that day is an accomplishment.”) Some people believe any activity they can’t measure or quantify is not an accomplishment. “Most resume-writing and job-search advice states that accomplishments are best when they are backed up by facts and figures,” says career-development practitioner Karen Schofield, “Some people work in fields where it isn’t always easy to quantify what they have accomplished in their jobs, such as teaching and writing. That situation makes it difficult for the job-seeker to clearly explain what he or she has done and how it benefited the company or client, Schofield says.

When we think of benefit to an employer or client, we generally think in terms of results, and most people miss accomplishments because they aren’t thinking in terms of results, observes Darlene Zambruski, managing editor for ResumeEdge.com. “They’re thinking in terms of tasks. For example, ‘I do this, I do that.’ Stopping to think of the consequences if they didn’t do ‘this’ or ‘that,’ that would give them the accomplishment.”

We Have Difficulty Seeing Ourselves as Others See Us

Because we often have no idea how others view us, we’re not sure if they perceive what we do as accomplishments-worthy. We’re often surprised to discover that the people we work with and observe our work find us far more highly accomplished than we find ourselves. (However, having made that discovery, we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking others will talk about our success for us -- so we don’t have to.) Women are especially likely to underestimate how coworkers perceive them, as University of New Mexico researcher Scott Taylor discovered when he studied 251 managers. He found that women were three times less likely than men to accurately predict their coworkers’ perception of their work performance. The women tended to undercut themselves when asked to rate their performance through their coworkers’ and managers’ eyes across many key workplace attributes. “The need to ‘toot you own horn’ is just not something that everyone possesses,” notes Cash, “and I think that has a lot to do with what generation you grew up in. I think that humility is generation-based. Prior to and including Gen X, one did not talk themselves up or they were looked upon as bragging or brown-nosing. The change in the way society interprets accomplishments has changed at a basic level. What a seasoned job-seeker may interpret as just doing their job and doing it darn well, a younger generation may look at each detail as an accomplishment.” Many of us have been taught that our good work should speak for itself; we shouldn’t need to talk about it. Some of us actually think we’ll get more attention by being humble than by touting our accomplishments. Women have particular difficulty with the idea of boasting, notes Peggy Klaus. “It’s a well-researched fact that women are terrible self-promoters,” she writes. Man or woman, though, you’re not boasting; you’re marketing a product. Here’s a tip however -- research shows that people who compare themselves to others when touting their accomplishments (“I’m better than others.”) do tend to come off as boastful.

Final Thoughts

Clearing the Obstacles to Identifying and Tracking Accomplishments Now that we better understand the barriers that frequently stand in the way of identifying and tracking our accomplishments, we can begin to break through those barriers. We can’t time-travel to the beginning of our careers and begin to record accomplishments in real time. But we can deploy various tools to help us pick our brains, remember, and record achievements. See all the content in our Accomplishments Section for resources. JOB SEEKING? Here are Five Ways to Use Universal Principles to Find Your Ideal Job

S

by Tricia Molloy

earching for a new job can be one of the most challenging and emotional experiences of your life. When you capitalize on the power of your subconscious mind and use universal principles—like Affirmations and Gratitude—you will have the clarity, confidence and commitment you need to succeed. By following these five strategies, based on the “CRAVE Your Ideal Job!” program, you’ll have a competitive edge to not only find another job but the one that’s right for you. 1. Clean Out the Clutter

New opportunities and helpful people can’t reach you if physical, technical and emotional clutter is blocking the way. The law is: The universe abhors a vacuum. When you clear out the clutter (paperwork and old emails, as well as forgiving your last employer for letting you go), you create the space for the universe to fill it with what serves your highest good.

2. Raise Your Vibrations

Looking for a job can be frustrating and often creates fear and doubt. That leads to vibrating at a low, negative level. We are all vibrational beings and we vibrate at different levels at different times. Vibrations is just another word for feelings and emotions–your attitude. The universal

law states that energy attracts like energy—just like a magnet. When we feel good and operate from a place of love, peace and trust, we vibrate at a high level and we attract people and circumstances that vibrate at that same positive, constructive level. Increase and maintain a high vibration by taking good care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, spend time with positive people, enjoy nature, find reasons to laugh, sing, enjoy a hobby, and practice random and not-so-random acts of kindness.

3. Affirm Success

On average, studies show we talk to ourselves 10,000 times a day and 80% of that talk is negative. Be aware of what you’re saying to yourself when you wake each morning, before making phone calls, at networking events and as you prepare for interviews. Keep it positive, in the present and brief. Consider using affirmations like these: “I attract ideal job opportunities today.” “I am guided to make smart job search choices.” “I have all the skills and abilities to be a valuable asset to this company.” “I am the greatest (fill in your profession)!” Write your affirmations down, post them, say them with a smile, and share them with others.

4. Visualize

Every top athlete has harnessed the power of visualization. The runner sees herself breaking through the tape at the end of the race and the golfer sees the hole in one. What can you visualize about your job search? Perhaps it’s making the best impression during a job interview. Or, you might visualize yourself working at your ideal job. A picture is worth a thousand words but it takes more than just seeing to get the results. Visualization is a three-step, repetitive process that connects you with your subconscious mind. To give it the power you need to succeed, engage all your senses. What do you hear, smell, touch and taste? And, infuse it with the positive emotions you would feel if this were a reality—like happiness, pride and maybe even relief. Commit to seeing your goals as “real” and they soon will be. Consider creating a treasure map or vision board to accelerate the visualization process.

5. Express Thanks

What you focus on expands. What you appreciate appreciates. Though your main focus may be that you don’t have a job, there are many other very positive things you do have. A few nights a week, write in a gratitude

The Changing Face of The Retail Trade by Michael Rieley

A

bout 15 million people worked in retail trade in the United States in May 2013, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These workers—salespersons, stock clerks, customer service representatives, and others—provide a crucial link between consumers and the products they buy. This article explores the retail trade industry and the trends that have influenced it. The first section gives a brief overview of the industry and its major occupations. The second section examines recent and future employment trends in retail trade. Sources for more information appear at the end of the article.

Retail Details

The retail trade industry is a vast network of businesses that needs workers in hundreds of different occupations. Here’s a closer look at the employment, wage, and outlook data for both retail trade and its largest occupations.

Industry Overview

The retail trade industry includes establishments that sell products, such as motor vehicles and clothing, and after-sale services related to these products, such as cleaning or repair. Retailers sell their products and services directly to customers, which may include individuals and businesses. Retail trade deals in smaller quantities than the bulk sales of wholesale trade.

There are two types of retailers: store and nonstore. Store retailers run fixed, “brick-and-mortar” locations designed to attract walk-in customers. In these stores, retailers usually display products that they also advertise on television, radio, and other formats, such as the Internet. Nonstore retailers also sell to customers, but, as the name implies, they do not run a fixed, physical location. These retailers usually sell their products through informational commercials, or “infomercials”; door-to-door sales; and other places, such as portable stalls and kiosks. Employment. According to BLS Occupational Employment Statistics(OES) data, there were about 15.2 million workers in retail trade in May 2013. That total represents about 11 percent of nonfarm employment that year. The largest employers within retail trade are other general merchandise stores (which includes warehouse clubs and supercenters, dollar stores, and variety stores) and food and beverage stores, each with about 3 million workers. The next largest employers are motor vehicle and parts dealers, which had 1.8 million workers; and clothing and clothing accessories stores, with 1.4 million workers. Wages. In May 2013, the median annual wage in the retail trade industry was $22,980, compared with a median of $35,080 for workers in all industries. The median wage is the point at which half the workers in the industry earned more, and half earned less. Employers often pay workers in the retail trade industry by the hour, but some workers also earn a commission: a percentage of the sales they make. As a result, retail workers’ wages often vary with economic conditions.

Between 2012 and 2022, BLS projects employment in retail trade to grow about 7 percent, adding more than 1 million workers. Outlook. Between 2012 and 2022, BLS projects employment in retail trade to grow about 7 percent, adding more than 1 million workers. Despite this growth, BLS also projects a slight decline in the retail industry’s share of total nonfarm employment.

Occupation Highlights

Four occupations—retail salespersons, cashiers, stock clerks and order fillers, and supervisors of retail sales workers—accounted for nearly two-thirds of employment in the retail trade industry. Although wages in retail trade are low overall, median wages for most of the occupations with the largest employment were higher than those for the industry as a whole in May 2013. The highest paying occupations in the table, pharmacists and general and operations managers, both require postsecondary education; pharmacists typically need a doctoral or professional degree. In contrast, the lowest paying occupations shown—hand packers and packagers and cashiers—typically include short-term on-the-job training but have no formal educational requirements. Below are descriptions of the 10 largest occupations in the retail trade industry. Retail salespersons. Retail salespersons mainly sell products and interact with customers. Sometimes, they also stock shelves, prepare merchandise displays, and handle customer payments. According to BLS, there were 4.5 million retail salespersons overall in May 2013, most of them in retail trade. Between 2012 and 2022, BLS projects this occupation to have average employment growth. Almost 2 million job openings overall are expected, due to growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupation. Cashiers. Cashiers handle customer payments, answer questions about store policies, and bag purchases.

There were 3.3 million cashiers overall in May 2013, most of them working in retail trade. Between 2012 and 2022, BLS projects employment in this occupation to have slower than average growth, with automation of cashier job duties expected to limit growth. Still, about 1.5 million job openings overall are projected to result from employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupation.

the last decade. (This industry accounted for a very small part of retail trade employment, however, in 2013.) By comparison, overall employment growth for retail trade was just 0.1 percent. The increasing popularity of online shopping has caused some retailers, such as electronics stores, to see declining employment over the past few years. This trend is expected to continue shaping the retail trade industry in the future.

Future Developments

But employment in retail trade doesn’t always follow the economy. Employment related to electronic shopping and electronic auctions, for example, has increased every year since 2004, growing about 164 percent over

The retail trade industry is changing. Store mergers, more attention to customer service, and increased productivity are just a few of the ways that retailers are adapting as they forge into the future. Other trends are expected to shape retail trade in the coming years. The industry may see a narrowing focus of “big box” stores, continued growth of online shopping, increasing use of technology and advances in automation, and other trends. “Big box” retailers. Stores commonly known as “big box” retailers, such as warehouse clubs and supercenters, have grown steadily over the past decade. But the rise of online shopping could slow—or even reverse—this trend because these retailers can match many of the strengths of big box stores, such as wide selection and low prices. The competitive advantage for brick-and-mortar stores is strong customer service, which is harder to provide with a broad range of products. Big box retailers may have more success by planning stores that have a specific focus, which would allow for better trained, more knowledgeable staff. Online shopping. Online sales are less labor intensive than those in physical stores, because fewer workers are needed to deal with customers in person—leading to slower employment growth in the future. In addition, the speed and convenience of online shopping are expected to continue driving growth. So-called anticipatory shipping, for example, may help retailers know what kind of products to keep in stock. Online shopping affects sales with some types of retailers more than with others. Book, music, and movie stores face intense competition from online sales. Sporting goods stores and clothing stores face better prospects, because customers may prefer trying these products before buying them. Recent legislation proposed in Congress would impose a sales tax on e-commerce outlets and retailers, which currently pay no tax in many states. The potential impact of this legislation on consumer behavior is not yet clear, but it could reduce online shopping’s price advantage.

Technology. Some occupations in retail trade could be affected by continued use of technology and increasing automation. For example, the duties of a car salesperson have changed because of technology. Car shoppers can research online for a make and model that fits their needs and budget and go into a dealership already focused on the car they want to buy. Because of this, a car salesperson’s role may be to help with the purchase by answering questions and completing paperwork. Automation may affect food and beverage stores. Self-checkout stations at grocery stores may someday replace cashiers or retail salespersons, for example. However, employment of cashiers has remained stable so far, suggesting that customers still prefer interacting with human cashiers. Other trends. Business improvements could also help physical stores to compete with online retailers. Dynamic pricing, for example, allows product cost to change with demand throughout the day. Social media helps stores see which items are popular, so they can feature them more prominently in their displays.

For More Information

The retail trade industry employs workers in hundreds of occupations. For example, merchandise displayers and window trimmers plan and build commercial displays in the windows and interiors of retail stores. Security guards protect the people, products, money, and equipment in retail stores. And building cleaning workers keep retail stores in good condition by collecting trash, wiping surfaces, and sweeping floors. For detailed information about those and other occupations, visit the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). Each OOH profile includes information about job duties, wages, employment outlook, and more. Find links to more BLS data for the retail trade industry on its Industries at a Glance page. The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) also has information about retail trade.
