I

have a relatively new nephew (he’s two). He’s the only small child our family has ever had, and when we get together for dinner, my sister and our family talk quite a bit about what a child should be doing at his age, (eating by himself with a spoon for example) what the next step should be, discipline techniques and the like. This got me thinking about expectations in general. What does one or should one expect out of his or her life, family, career? I know this answer is wildly different for everyone. But I also know that expectations can get you in trouble. The reason expectations can get you in trouble are because they are usually one sided: I expect something from you, and you either meet those expectations or you do not. I rarely (unless I am the mother of a two-year-old child) have a hand in manifesting the expectations I have for you...I just expect. If you don’t deliver, I am disappointed, hurt, or even resentful. I don’t know about you, but I really dislike feeling resentful, so I’ve been working on making requests instead of having expectations. Instead of expecting that a coworker would let me know when they leave for the day, I have learned to ask “Would you please let me know when you leave the office for the day? I’d like to know when I’m the last one here.” The request makes a “no” possible, but more likely than not, the person you requested from will want to help you. So the next time you have expectations and are disappointed, try requesting instead...It may get you further...I say “may” in case you’re requesting something from a two year old.

T

he health care industry will see a 21% increase in IT jobs by 2020, according to research by the University of Chicago. Across all health care sectors, there is a demand for creative, thoughtful uses of health informatics, mobile technology, cloud systems, and digital diagnostics. Many of these new inventions have yet to be approved by the FDA, a process that can take up to 10 years. But that’s not stopping the research and development of new technologies. Here are 10 types of tech that are changing the course of health care.

1. DIGITAL DIAGNOSTICS

Making health care more accessible includes providing digital diagnostics options for people who need it, especially those who can’t get to a doctor’s office. This is one of the main themes of digital health. One example of digital diagnostics is Neurotrack, a software-based Alzheimer’s diagnostic test that can detect impairments on the hippocampus (the first area of the brain to be affected by the disease) by evaluating eye movement.

2. THE CLOUD

According to recent research by Skyhigh Networks, more than 13% of cloud services in health care are considered high-risk for security breaches, and 77% of them are medium-risk. Cloud services provide a lot of benefits for medical providers, especially in under-developed or rural areas, but there is definite risk involved. The research showed that there are 944 cloud services in use across healthcare providers, and 53% of employees use at least three devices at work.

3. ULTRA-FAST SCANS

GE showcased its breakthrough ultra-fast CT scanner earlier this year, which can capture a still image of a heart in one beat. The company said

that according to research, about 60% of patients have heart rates of higher than 60 beats per minute and are turned away from scans because their heart beats too fast to scan. With this Revolution CT, doctors can see specific areas of the heart that they could not before.

4. WEARABLES

Wearable technology is going to play a huge role in health care in years to come. The Consumer Electronics Association reports that sales of fitness trackers and smart watches will reach $1 billion this year. But monitoring fitness is only the beginning. For instance, Intel teamed up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to use wearables to find certain characteristics of Parkinson’s disease.

5. HEALTH INFORMATICS

More than half of US hospitals use some type of electronic records system, but only 6% meet all the federal mandates, according to a recent study out of the University of Michigan. According to researchers at the University of Chicago, 50% of health care dollars are wasted on inefficient record keeping processes. Electronic records have been shown to save large hospitals anywhere between $37 and $59 million. It streamlines the medical care process and lowers malpractice claims, and increases coordination between providers. The federal government set a mandate to have some electronic system in place by this year.

6. DIGITAL THERAPY

Digital therapy is important for patients who need at-home care, can’t afford to travel to a clinic, or have no way to get to a clinic for therapy. Wellframe is a platform that combines mobile technology with artificial intelligence to provide patients with care after they’ve returned home from the hospital or doctor’s office. It’s been described as a “GPS navigation system for patients.” There is a daily to-do list for the patient and a tracker for diet and exercise, but an advanced algorithm adapts the content based on the information from patient and healthcare provider. The company has performed trials with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and mental health patients.

With mobile technology, it’s easier than ever to have a customized diet or health plan. 7. CONCIERGE MEDICAL SERVICES

Startups are making it easier to pay out-of-pocket for on-demand health care services. For example, GoodRX allows you to compare prices for drugs at different pharmacies and save up to 80%. One Medical Group was created by doctors to build a better system for doctor’s visits. In certain cities, you can search for an office based on your needs, find same-day appointments, email access, online scheduling, and trained primary doctors.

8. NETWORKS AND COACHING

With mobile technology, it’s easier than ever to have a customized diet or health plan. ThriveOn is personalized coaching for mental health, offering plans by assessing your sleep, mood, stress, anxiety, and body image. Retrofit offers coaching and expert advice for weight loss and weight management.

9. SELF-INSURANCE

With the onset of Affordable Care Act, more consumers have had to manage their own data and health future. Several startups are using this as an opportunity to offer insurance, benefits, and solutions services. Health solutions platforms such as Jiff, which connects employee behaviors to company benefits and incentives, are becoming more common.

10. HACKATHONS

Hacking is becoming an increasingly popular tool to solving real world problems, especially in the health care industry. Health care, which usually evolves slowly, is being revitalized with software developments, hardware inventions, cloud systems, apps, and wearables, and many of these ideas are born out of hackathons. MIT held a hackathon earlier this year that drew 450 people from various backgrounds such as engineering, journalism, medicine, and IT to tackle global health, diabetes, and hospital IT. Why can’t a woman be like a man? Why is it that women need a different strategy to be successful when working with men or in a male-dominated company or business? How come women can’t just do what we feel comfortable with and break through the glass ceiling? There are three reasons just for starters:

1. Men don’t like questions. Women do.

omen are raised to be nice. Men to be right, which is why many men don’t like asking for directions and women can’t figure out what the fuss is all about! So let’s start with one simple technique that you can use right now today to improve your communication skills with men. Stop asking questions. Instead use statements or simply give instructions. You can practice right now with your husband, mate, or children. Instead of saying, “Hi honey, how was your day?” Try this, “Hi honey, tell me about your day.” Notice the subtle difference. You will not be asking a question, but

instead giving an instruction. Men do really well with simple, specific instructions, and don’t be afraid to be specific. Try this at work on male colleagues and bosses and you’ll instantly get better results. When you go into a meeting with your boss, avoid asking any questions and instead convert everything into a statement. Instead of saying, “What changes did you want me to make to this report?” Say, “Tell me what you wanted me to change.” The moment a man hears a question, their hackles go up, unconsciously so this new style you adopt will put men at ease. It will take some practice on your part to get used to it

so get your male friends to remind you every time you ask a question so you can practice converting it into a statement. Tell me… is a good starting point. Tell me what you most liked about my presentation. Instead of asking, when would be a good time to meet, say, “Let’s set up a meeting for Friday at 1pm.” This makes you come across as more confident and more directive. Men associate questions with weakness. Instead of saying, “Can you clarify what you mean? I didn’t understand. Change that to an instruction. Please explain your third point about the sales figures.

Are You Sabotaging Your Career Unintentionally?

I’ve just gotten back from my first trip to Dublin where I was giving a talk for Morgan McKinley entitled: Break through the Glass Ceiling: Communication Strategies for Women in the Workplace. This seminar was so popular and caused such a stir that I thought I’d make it available to the population at large, yes, even men! In this webinar, I’ll share with you the biggest concern the attendees had: how to set clear boundaries. I’ll also reveal a number of mistakes women make unintentionally that sabotage their careers. First, let’s explain boundaries. A boundary is simply something people can’t say or do to you any longer. You can make up any boundaries you need to be your best. Boundaries are essential to career success and, contrary to what most women think, are essential to getting promoted. If you don’t have boundaries or they are weak or inadequate, you will be taken advantage of, stepped over or even stepped on. You will become a doormat, in effect. Doormats don’t get respect and they don’t get promoted. So first step is to expand your boundaries so that they are much bigger than you think you need. Generally, men are much better at setting boundaries than women and I’ll explain why this is the case in the webinar.

Common boundaries you might want to install if you don’t have them in place already: • People can’t waste my time. • People can’t interrupt me. • People can’t be late when meeting me. • People can’t yell at me. • People can’t take advantage of me. • People can’t be rude to me. • People can’t make sexist remarks or jokes around me. • People can’t call me after 9pm on weeknights.

How to install these boundaries without coming across like a prima donna? Listen to the webinar and find out from me directly or you can read either book, Coach Yourself to Successor The Secret Laws of Attraction for this simple and effective 4-step communication model on setting strong boundaries. Whatever you do, make sure you have strong, firm and clear boundaries in place both at home and at work to set the stage for your raise or promotion. Curious about this webinar, Break through the Glass Ceiling: Communication Strategies for Women in the Workplace? Read on… Frustrated when nobody listens to your ideas in a meeting? Perhaps you have been overlooked for a promotion? Are you close to that glass ceiling but just can’t seem to break through? In this one-hour webinar, you will learn: 1. 8 ways women stunt their careers unintentionally 2. How to set boundaries gracefully 3. Why women can’t use the same strategies men use to advance their careers 4. How to build your confidence at work 5. How not to take things personally 6. How to use the voice of power 7. How to speak and be heard: 2 simple ways to get your point across 8. How to get the respect and recognition you deserve 9. ew research by Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) has tracked the first increase in technology manufacturing U.S. job growth since 2001. After a long period of contraction and job loss, the tech industry is now enjoying a period of stabilization. Looking forward, manufacturing employment is projected to see positive net growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the rate of growth is expected to be a nominal 0.7 percent between 2013 and 2018, it is a positive sign that the pain endured during the early years of the millennium may be over. As a result of domestic technology job growth, demand for industrial space in the tech sector is increasing, particularly in markets with a high concentration of technology firms. Unlike other manufacturing operations, these highly automated technology manufacturing facilities are opening with a need for proximity to highly-skilled labor — and so are best located near tech-savvy work force clusters. For example, a major cell phone manufacturer recently announced plans to open a plant to assemble smart phones in Fort Worth, Texas. The location makes it easier for engineers, many of whom were based in tech-mecca Austin, to make design tweaks in response to shifting customer tastes. For site selectors, that anecdotal evidence is substantiated in the JLL research Perspectives on Technology Manufacturing, which reveals that access to specialized expertise has started to outweigh the costs of real estate and labor as a site selection factor. Access to talent is one of the reasons that manufacturing facilities for technology firms are often located in tier-one locations where labor and real estate are generally more expensive. In addition to access to skilled talent, high-tech manufacturing firms are also looking to locate in clusters close to suppliers and customers, especially for business-to-business interchanges. As a result, in 2010 about 79 percent of moderately-high-tech manufacturing jobs, and 95 percent of very-high-tech manufacturing jobs, were located in the 100 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. Lower-skilled technology jobs are more concentrated in the southern states, while more than one third of the most-high-tech positions reside in companies on the West Coast.

“Hot” Markets

Between 2012 and 2018, high-tech manufacturing jobs are expected to proliferate further in California’s Silicon Valley — creating an even tighter real estate market as tech companies look for industrial space, in addition to expanding their need for traditional office space, as they grow. As stated, another attractive market is Austin, Texas. Already a

mushrooming technology hub, Austin is now also becoming a magnet for high-tech manufacturing growth. The area offers a well-established presence of manufacturing and R&D operations that take advantage of the thousands of engineering and computer science graduates the University of Texas generates each year. Additional high-tech opportunities are located in Los Angeles; Binghamton, New York; Portland, Oregon; Boulder, Colorado; Phoenix; Boston; and Boise, Idaho. A second tier of smaller but growing high-tech clusters are scattered across the United States, but expanding most rapidly in the southeastern states, where companies are taking advantage of the low cost of living and less expensive, yet skilled, labor force. Other North American cities will also compete with American hubs as important technology manufacturing centers, including Toronto in Canada and Guadalajara, Juarez, and Tijuana in Mexico.

Location Factors

When making technology manufacturing location decisions, site selectors should consider: Where are my markets? If you innovate highly specialized products for specific customers, you’ll likely want to be closest to your largest source of customer orders. If you market consumer electronics or computer-related products to a broader audience, proximity to nationwide distribution may be more important. Location near well-connected “inland ports” such as Dallas/ Fort Worth, Chicago, Kansas City, Atlanta, Memphis, southern California’s Inland Empire, or Charlotte might represent strategic locations for supply chain optimization.

How important is proximity to the very best and brightest workers and technological resources? If access to world-leading scientists, engineers, technicians, and educational and technologytransfer resources is critical, then Silicon Valley or another high-tech hub like Austin, New York, or the Greater Toronto Area might be the best choice of location. Of course, you’ll pay top dollar for both real estate and talent. Will you require a large manufacturing space with lots of employees? If so, you will probably want to stay away from top-tier high-tech hubs and lean toward lower-labor-cost markets. From the Southeast to Arizona, there are many manufacturing clusters combining lower-cost workers, including right-to-work status, with available land at reasonable prices. These locations offer incentives to support manufacturing operations, and in today’s competitive climate, areas newer to high-tech manufacturing often offer the best package of incentives that can include tax concessions, economic grants, reimbursements, and training partnerships through local institutions. These areas also tend to have more land available than legacy tier-one markets. Not only is suitable space in tier-one locations like Silicon Valley expensive, the supply is typically scarce. Many former light manufacturing facilities were either converted into offices early in the decade or now require significant upgrades to accommodate more recent technologies. Over the next decade, the technology sector will join other industries that are manufacturing in North America as a prudent — and profitable — way to do business given current global economic trends. As economic development

While economic incentives can be persuasive, a good starting point for site selectors is to make industrial location decisions based on access to skilled talent, customers, and suppliers. Optimal location selection will help meet tech firms’ innovation and speed-to-market goals, critical elements for success in this highly competitive industry. The Changing Trends in Healthcare Careers

H

ealthcare careers have changed over the past few years. Doctor and nurse careers are no longer the only options available in the medical field. You can become a medical biller, transcriptionist, coder, pharmacy technician, and so much more. Each career choice will require you to become a trained professional to provide the best care. For instance, a medical biller and coder will require you to work behind the scenes, talk on a telephone and to be good with numbers. These jobs are important professional careers that are necessary for providing quality healthcare to the patients. The healthcare industry will continue to change each year making it necessary for new workers in the healthcare industry. With an increased demand in the healthcare industry, new jobs have had to be created. Some factors have influenced these changing healthcare career trends during the past decade. In the past decade, the healthcare utilization rates showed us how services have changed. Even with an aging population and health care incentives, there was not much increase or decrease during a ten year span for visits to the hospitals, physician’s offices or emergency room departments. However, there was an increase of visits to outpatient branches of the hospitals. Therefore, a new need was discovered for expanding outpatient services. With the expansion of outpatient services, more healthcare jobs became available. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 228,000 jobs have been added to the healthcare industry since 2012. This increase has happened due to an increasing need for more manpower at the hospitals, outpatient

clinics and nursing homes. The healthcare system has become more challenging. Therefore, there has become a need for improvement in the healthcare industry. A healthcare publication discussed the trends for the future ten years in the healthcare industry. This publication showed that patient care had decreased recently in the Academic Health Centers. This encouraged the health centers to try to be more efficient and productive with their research and patient care. In addition, the article stated that some areas would have an increase in other trends. For instance, there would be an increase in costs for patients, an increase need for technology and an increase need for patient care. The healthcare trends would need to focus on the patient as the main consumer, and the healthcare industry would need to maintain a competitive edge to provide the necessary care for each patient. Today, the healthcare industry is working to provide quality care for patients by reducing the payments to providers. With an increase in insured patients and a new healthcare system, the healthcare career market is looking more promising. The past and the present trends in the healthcare career market have helped prepare the future for those who want a career in healthcare. For a promising career in the healthcare industry, you will need to be prepared to provide efficient care for the patients since the patients and the insurers are the consumers who keep the healthcare industry going. People are requiring more healthcare services than they did in the past. Therefore, this means more jobs are available in the medical and healthcare profession today. with their employees with IDD, and a third reported the experience exceeded their expectations. “You usually don’t see those kind of numbers from HR departments that have started new hiring initiatives,” said Davis. “It’s likely the employers had anticipated certain challenges that weren’t there, and the resources to support them were greater than they had realized.” The satisfaction experienced by high-performance companies did not surprise Shriver at all. “They’ve hired an effective and enthusiastic employee, and now have lower turnover in those jobs,” Shriver pointed out.

The Boise VA Medical Center proudly serves veterans in the Boise, Idaho area in its main medical center and in three community-based outpatient clinics.

“The culture of our schools have changed since we began inclusion of people with IDD. Our offices can transform as well.” Younger people today have grown up in an era of increasing inclusion in schools, and are far more likely to be familiar with people with IDD. However, Shriver suggested that much of the reluctance to hire people with IDD stems from lack of familiarity given previously segregated schools. “CEOs in their 40s and 50s did not grow up with inclusion in the schools and many simply do not know anybody with IDD,” he said. “They don’t know who this population is, what their capacity is when they have the right training to support them, or how to train and support them.” To find out more about how someone with disabilities gets successfully incorporated into his workplace, I spoke with Brian DeAtley. DeAtley is Senior Research Manager at the Institute for Economic Empowerment at SourceAmerica, a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities find jobs. He emphasized that employing people with IDD is a triple win:

the employer, the employee, and the federal government all benefit. The federal government currently spends hundreds of billions of dollars yearly on services and support for unemployed people with disabilities. DeAtley argues, “Even given the EPTA [a tax credit for employers hiring people with disabilities], employing people with IDD is budget-positive for federal government.” I also spoke with Ty Ross, who uses his considerable expertise in computers for his job as a data technician in the Davis County School District in Utah. Ross has cerebral palsy, and the Pathways to Careers initiative of SourceAmerica helped him get his position. Before Pathways, Ross had significant trouble finding a job. “My mom would take me on interviews. We got the vibe walking through the door that they weren’t taking me seriously and it was really frustrating,” he said. “I had a lot of schooling, but that doesn’t make it easy to get a job. That’s only the half the equation. You need to get an interview and get someone to give you a chance to get your foot in the door.” Article provided by www.thedailybeast.com

If you do not understand the unwritten rules that govern the company and how it operates, you could make a serious faux pas and hurt your reputation before you even get started.

3. Solicit Feedback

Honest feedback is essential to job success, and it is never too early to start asking for constructive criticism. Soliciting feedback from the people you interact with is one of the best ways to get off to a good start.

These days employers expect even entry-level hires to hit the ground running. If you have not already done so, you need to read the job description carefully and make sure you understand all your duties.

4. Make Friends

Socializing and making friends at work can make your daily life more pleasant, but it also helps you build a good reputation. Interview Tip: Be Likable

Page 23

Ranked a “Best Firm To Work For” by Structural Engineer magazine!

by Neil Kokemuller

Despite the thousands of interview questions already in existence and the new ones created daily, hiring managers typically evaluate two key internal questions. One question is, “Why should I hire you?” The other is, “Do I like you?” or, “Would I want to work with you?” While it is important to spend hours preparing to address the “Why should I hire you?” premise, it is equally important to plan to be likable. You cannot change who you are, but you can show off your likable qualities with an effective plan.

Strategies to Be Likable

Your first impression impacts your likability in a major way. A hiring manager makes judgments about your personality, character and diligence just by observing your interview attire, facial expression, handshake and initial greeting. Get off to a high-impact start by dressing the part, offering a friendly smile and exchanging genuine pleasantries. Balance confidence with humility. Arrogance is not a likable trait to most hiring managers for most jobs. Relaxed confidence is better. Answer questions with a focus on showing why you match well with the company and position. Most importantly, engage the hiring manager or interviewers throughout the process. Look each person in the eyes as you respond. Maintain a relaxed, friendly facial expression. Participate in small amounts of humor if your intuition tells you the hiring manager is open to it. If you don’t like people and you aren’t a likable person, work on those characteristics before applying for a job in which people matter. Assuming you have interest in people and are a likable person, showcase these qualities in your interview. Managers are people. They want to hire good people to work with. Few people hire someone who rubs them the wrong way during the interview. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

here is no better place to make a difference to our country than in our government, which touches all aspects of our lives, from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the roads we travel. Government employees are on the front lines of solving challenging and complex issues such as global warming, health care, and our economic health. As a civil servant, your work can have a positive impact on both our county and our world. In our federal government, there are jobs for every type of person with every type of background, but the people most likely to succeed are those who want to have a significant impact on people’s lives and care deeply about good governance. They are “change agents” — optimistic, skilled people with a can-do attitude that is complimented by a sense of realism and practicality, recognizing that government changes come in small measures.

Between the legislative, judicial and executive branches of the federal government, the opportunities for employment are vast. Politicians and legislative staff, civil servants and members of the armed forces are all considered federal employees. Although there are many ways to work in the federal government, however this website will largely focus on full-time career civil-service employment within the executive branch. These positions exist in the fifteen executive departments which make up the cabinet, as well as numerous independent agencies and government corporations. There are roughly 2 million of these civilian government jobs at more than 120 federal departments and agencies (and that doesn’t include the U.S. Postal Service). These jobs are also available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories and in more than 140 foreign countries.

Now is a particularly exciting time to pursue a federal job. Government is changing the way it does business and is promoting more dynamic work environments. The comprehensive benefits package offered by the federal government includes retirement, extensive health care, competitive salaries and more. In order to attract new talent, some agencies may offer student loan repayments, signing bonuses and flexible work schedules in addition to these first-class benefits. Of all the reasons to work for the federal government, none outweigh the chance to address pressing national issues and impact the lives of all Americans. Simply put, a federal job allows you to contribute to a cause greater than yourself, making it a uniquely rewarding professional experience. Article provided by GoGovernment.org

Easy Principles for Goal Setting

M

by Jeff Charles

any have heard of the term “SMART Goals”. SMART is a system that makes it easier to set effective and realistic goals. Using the SMART system enables people to take more control of their lives especially when it comes to realizing their dreams. So what does SMART stand for? SMART is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timebound. In order to set a SMART goal, it must fit into all five of these criteria. • The first rule of a SMART goal is that it must be specific. It must answer some or all of these five questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? • The second rule deals whether or not the goal is measurable. • The third rule is that the goal must be attainable.

• The fourth rule is that the goal has to be relevant. This simply means that the behaviors one engages in must actually contribute to the achievement of the goal. • Finally, the fifth rule is that the goal must be time-bound. This means that the goal must be set to a deadline. Deadlines should be realistic without giving us too much room to procrastinate. They can even be broken down into smaller deadlines as well. See? It’s not so hard! Goals cannot be wishy-washy thoughts that stay inside your head. If we are to achieve our goals, we must make them easier to understand and accomplish. If we apply the SMART system in achieving our goals and meeting our objectives, we will become more effective, happier, and far more productive.

ebruary is Black History Month, and all over the world, people are honoring it and sharing Black history facts and topics. It is also commonplace in many workplaces to also participate and celebrate Black History Month and the contributions African Americans have made to the world. Cultural awareness and diversity are now things that we see encouraged at work through programs and special events, and as a former HR manager, I feel that it often brings unity and strengthens company culture. But while there are many workplaces that do acknowledge and participate in Black History Month, there are many others that do not.

Does your workplace participate in Black History Month?

I have worked in workplaces that celebrated it as well as those that didn’t think it was necessary. I found that those companies that did celebrate it, were ones of inclusion. They were often large corporations with many offices worldwide, and felt responsible to partake in the sharing of information that Black History Month offers. The smaller companies I worked for usually did not celebrate Black History Month, or any other celebratory event outside of holidays. If your employer is on the fence about participating in Black History Month, it could be that they don’t know how to. It may seem like it is a given that companies would know ways in which they could participate in Black History Month, but perhaps, they could use some suggestions or feedback. Here are a few ideas to help the workplace participate in Black History Month:

Guest Speakers

You provide the talent. We offer the incentive and work environment where you can push yourself and achieve your goals. Flint Hills Resources owns and operates refineries, chemical plants and ethanol production plants in Minnesota, Texas, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Georgia. Whether running a plant or a terminal, creating engineering solutions, designing IT processes and improvements, striving for 100 percent compliance, selling our products, or keeping track of finances or projects, Flint Hills Resources employees play a key role in creating value for our customers. For career opportunities visit us:

www.kochcareers.com We are an equal opportunity employer. Minority/Female/Disabled/Veteran

Some workplaces invite guest speakers to speak during a Black History Month event, usually a luncheon type of affair. The speaker can be someone who is knowledgeable in African American history and studies, or who may have a story to tell about their life and past. This can be a civic leader or someone within the community. You could also invite someone who is able to talk about inclusion, embracing one another differences, cultures, etc. These luncheons or chats would be voluntary for those employees who wanted to participate.

Workshops/Seminars

A workshop or seminar can be a great way to get employees involved and engaged on the subject of race. Again, a guest speaker could be brought in to facilitate the workshop and answer questions. The purpose is to have employees perhaps role-playing or completing exercises that can help them learn to work better with one another.

Visuals

Posters that celebrate black history, quotes, photos—these can be used throughout the workplace to educate others and to acknowledge our contributions. In one office I worked in, there was a massive bulletin board in the main lobby area, and for Black History Month each year, it was decorated with all sorts of pictures, collages, and messages regarding African American history.

Emails

During my tenure as the HR manager for a call center, during Black History Month, each day, I would email out a different Black history tidbit or “little-known” fact. It was wonderful to get so many of the employees talking to one another about the emails saying, “I didn’t know that or, I forwarded the email to my colleague at so and so”. Black History Month is about teachable moments. I hope that more workplaces participate in Black History Month to inspire, encourage, and educate all employees, no matter the color. 5 Military Values that Translate to Civilian Jobs by Glen Stilson

There are a lot of jobs in the military that can be difficult to transfer into the civilian world. While some of us may wish there were an opening for a tank crew member or an infantryman in corporate America, those specific skills are likely to be left in your past. However, those who have served developed the following military values, usually under stress, and they are very useful and highly sought after in the job market today. Below are five military values that translate to civilian jobs.

View current openings and application procedure online at: 1963 EAST ANAHEIM STREET LONG BEACH, CA 90813

www.lbtransit.com Equal Opportunity Employer

1) Punctuality

I will admit that this has always been and will likely always be a weak point for me, but if there’s one thing that will still make you pucker up, it’s the idea of being late to a formation. Being on time is simply par for the course in the military, and many civilians who have never served have never had to face serious consequences for being late to work. This can give you a real edge when it comes to the modern workplace. Remember: if you’re early, you’re on time.

2) Integrity

Delaware North Companies is a global leader in hospitality and food service that is grounded in a foundation of family ownership. For current employment opportunities and application procedures, please visit our websites:

www.KennedySpaceCenter.com www.delawarenorth.com EEO/AAP/M/F/D/V. Drug Free Workplace. Pre-employment Screening Required.

Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at KSC, Inc. Mail Code DNPS Kennedy Space Center, FL 32899 Fax: 321-449-4284

This one may seem simple enough, but being honest and always doing what you say you’ll do is something that seems to be slipping away in the modern workplace. In the military many of us learned about unit cohesion, and the trust that you need from and give to those you serve with is something that is beyond worldly value. If you can bring that same unit cohesion and trust to your civilian job, the bonds you’ll form among your coworkers will likely only be second to the value that your boss will place on you.

3) Understanding Chain of Command

If every sergeant went to the captain with every complaint they had, the captain wouldn’t get anything done; and besides – what would the LTs do? Understanding how a true chain of command works is something I have found to be incredibly useful in civilian life, from the workplace to personal relationships and family. Figure out what the chain of command is at your job, or the job that you’re going into, and use it to get things done more efficiently.

4) Teamwork

I don’t think I need to say a lot here, as being a part of a team is something that we’ve all experienced. We’ve had some good leaders and some bad leaders, but regardless of leadership, the quality of your team is what holds it all together. Learning to recognize team members’ strengths and weaknesses, and helping them utilize both to maximum efficiency, is a skill that is highly valued at nearly any job. Placing the success of the team above the desire of the individual can give you a strong edge in the corporate world.

5) Strong Work Ethic

Sometimes work sucks. You didn’t sleep well last night, your dog died, it’s raining, the coffee’s cold, and you dropped your phone in the toilet at the office. But regardless of what is going on in your personal life, your job still needs to be performed – the mission still needs to be completed. I was told many years ago that the mark of a true professional is someone who can do their best work even when they don’t feel like it.
