anifesting has become a buzzword lately that has been showing up in my life. It suggests that by using the law of attraction you can bring the things you desire into your life. At first the word appeared in a somewhat random pattern around me—then my friend Scott offered me some CDs to listen to. I’m only about half way through the 15 hours of listening, but there are concepts of manifesting that are reminding me of things that have already happened in my life. When I was in high school I believed that one day I would have my very own Volkswagon convertible. Not sure how I would ever be able to afford it, I still spent time imagining driving around in my new car with the top down and the wind blowing through my hair. Each time I saw someone driving down the street in one, I believed deep down that someday it would be me behind the wheel. Then that someday arrived. My mother called and said her neighbor had a VW convertible for sale really cheap, that she bought it for me for my birthday! All I had to do was come pick it up and drive it home. And that’s exactly what I did. I had never been so happy in my life. It was the first time I realized that sometimes wishes do come true. Maybe you have a similar story in your past if you think about it. The way I understand it, the more you feel the feeling of what you desire, the more you believe it is on the way. From a metaphysical perspective, if you believe it then it is already here. So make time for contemplating, thinking, feeling and believing in what you want in your life. The perfect job, an improved relationship with your boss, an unexpected vacation...and be specific about what you wish for, because you just might get it. ew efforts to help America’s population of active duty servicemen and women, reservists and veterans are effective and have opened up rewarding career paths in a range of fields, including information technology, manufacturing and transportation. Both U.S. government programs and private industry are heeding the call to assist those job seekers who made the ultimate commitment to country. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden head the Joining Forces jobs initiative, which has brought together 2,000 domestic companies with the pledge of hiring 100,000 veterans, as well as the spouses of active duty military members, by the end of this year. Of course, helping veterans reintegrate into the civilian workforce is a critical effort for the nation’s economy and military. The unemployment rate for veterans is over 10% among post-9/11 enlistees, which is higher than the national rate of 7.9%, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Some companies have been well ahead of the curve, such as Home Depot, which launched its military employment outreach program in 2002. “Veterans are able to rally [colleagues] to accomplish the mission,” says Eric Schelling, Home Depot’s Director of Talent Acquisition. Many states are creating programs for veterans as well. When the Commonwealth of Virginia launched its Virginia Values Veterans jobs initiative, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) was one of the forerunners demonstrating the importance of hiring returning military personnel. “We know our veterans are trustworthy,” says Kevin Howell, a veterans recruiter for HII and U.S. Air Force Command Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.). This quality makes veterans great hires, he adds. HII received recognition from the Virginia Department of Veterans for its employment of veterans at the company’s shipbuilding headquarters in Newport News, Va., which is in the center of the most highly concentrated population of service members in the country. Citing “core values of integrity and safety,” Howell says teaming with the Armed Forces to fill its hiring pool is a winning tactic for HII. In turn, the company offers a wide range of career paths for veterans, including industrial production managers and ship engineers, but the qualities Howell cites also translate well to managerial positions, he says. The leadership and organizational skills developed in the military help those veterans qualify for positions that require team building and leadership, Howell explains. When reviewing potential civilian careers for former members of the military, 10 positions rise above the rest for their ability to tap into the skills and traits developed by most veterans, as well as their availability in the job market. Using data from the CareerCast Jobs Rated Report, here are the 10 jobs best suited for military veterans: Software Developer Training and Development Manager Industrial Production Manager Construction Program Manager Ship Engineer Administrative Services Manager

10 Keys to Work/Life Balance T by Dr. Mercola

oday’s employers seem to want more of your time than ever. In the U.S., the average worker puts in 55 hours a week. Meanwhile, text messaging, cell phones, and Blackberries can keep you tethered to the office even when you’re technically “off-duty.” How can you keep up with your always-on career and still find time to do what you need to do at home, spend time with your family, enjoy some kind of social life, and just plain relax?

1. Attitude is Everything

No matter how much you love your job, no matter how big a part of your life it is, ultimately you need to be able to “turn it off” and spend some time not working. This is hard for many people, because their work is an important part of who they are as people. This can be admirable, but an always-on-the-job attitude can be harmful in the long run.

2. Keep a Rational Schedule The more you’re trying to juggle, the more important it is to make a good schedule and keep to it. Block out all your work and non-work commitments and make sure to allow plenty of downtime and non-work time.

3. L earn to Say “No”

Batching tasks can be a great way to get more done in less time. You’ll work faster and better because your mind is only on one thing, and when it’s done, you can forget it.

7. Clear Your Mind

Do whatever it takes to confine all the things you’d be liable to worry about to a trusted system where you know they’ll get taken care of, so you can spend the rest of your time without worrying.

The more you’re trying to juggle, the more important it is to make a good schedule and keep to it.

If you’re having trouble keeping on top of everything going on in your life, it may be that you’ve committed more time than you have. Make a point of seriously considering any request that comes your way, and double-check your schedule before taking anything else on. When it’s too much, don’t be afraid to refuse.

4. Enjoy List-Free Time

Stop making lists of things to do in your off-time. When your non-work time feels like just so much more work, then stop. Drop the list for a day or two, and take things as they come.

5. Keep it Organized

6. Batch it

There’s nothing worse than finding yourself faced with overtime or extra working days because you didn’t get enough done at work.

8. G et it Wrong the First Time

Give yourself a set amount of time—say, an hour—to do the job, no matter how poorly. Let go of your perfectionism and just do as well as you can in the set time. You may have to go back and fix it, but you’ll be charged up by knowing the “heavy lifting” is already done.

9. K eep the Lines of Communication Open

Let the people closest to you know what’s going on in your work life when things get hectic, so they don’t feel like your lowest priority or worse, suddenly abandoned. And keep your ears open to hear what they tell you, too.

10. Be Honest With Yourself

This is the hardest one, but also the most necessary. Part of your weekly review should be to ask yourself “Am I happy with all this?” And follow up by looking at how well you’re doing of balancing everything. Over 15 years ago Dr Mercola founded Mercola.com. The site is the most visited natural health site in the world for the last seven years with nearly two million subscribers. Most agricultural and food scientists work in research universities, private industry, or the federal government. Agricultural and food scientists held about 33,500 jobs in 2010. Most agricultural and food scientists work in research universities, private industry, or the federal government. Their work takes place in offices, laboratories, and in the field. They spend most of their time studying data and reports in a laboratory or office. Field work includes visits to farms or processing plants. When visiting an animal production facility, they must follow biosecurity measures, wear suitable clothing, and tolerate animal waste and odor.

How to Become an Agricultural or Food Scientist Most animal scientists earn a Ph.D., whereas food scientists and technologists, as well as soil and plant scientists, typically earn a bachelor’s degree. Agricultural and food scientists need at

July 2013

least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited postsecondary institution, although many obtain a doctoral degree. Food scientists and technologists and soil and plant scientists typically earn bachelor’s degrees. Some scientists earn a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Most animal scientists earn a Ph.D.

Education

Every state has a land-grant college that offers agricultural science degrees. Many other colleges and universities also offer agricultural science degrees or agricultural science courses. Degrees in related sciences, such as biology, chemistry, or physics, or in a related engineering specialty also may qualify people for many agricultural science jobs. Undergraduate coursework for food scientists and technologists and for soil and plant scientists typically includes biology, chemistry, botany, and plant conservation. Students preparing to be food scientists take courses such as food chemistry, food analysis, food microbiology, food engineering, and food processing operations. Students preparing to be soil and plant scientists take courses in plant pathology, soil chemistry, entomology (the study of insects), plant physiology, and biochemistry. Students typically gain a strong foundation in their field, with an emphasis on teamwork, internships, and research opportunities. In addition to science coursework, undergraduates sometimes take humanities courses, which help them develop good communication skills. Many people with bachelor’s degrees in agricultural sciences find work in related jobs rather than becoming an agricultural or food scientist. For example, a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science is useful for managerial jobs in farm-related or ranch-related businesses, such as farming, ranching, agricultural inspection, farm credit institutions, or companies that make or sell feed, fertilizer, seed, and farm equipment. Graduate study further develops an animal scientist’s knowledge, and it typically takes students 6 years to complete their Ph.D. During graduate school, there is additional emphasis on lab work and original research, where prospective animal scientists have the opportunity to do experiments and sometimes supervise undergraduates. Advanced research topics include genetics, animal reproduction, and biotechnology,

among others. Advanced coursework also emphasizes statistical analysis and experiment design, which are important as Ph.D. candidates begin their research. Some agricultural and food scientists receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine before they begin their animal science training. Like candidates for a Ph.D. in animal science, a prospective veterinarian must first have a bachelor’s degree before getting into veterinary school. Important Qualities

Communication skills. Communication skills are critical for agricultural and food scientists. They must be able to explain their studies: what they were trying to learn, the methods they used, what they found, and what they think the implications are of their findings. They must also be able to communicate well when working with others, including technicians and student assistants. Critical-thinking skills. Agricultural and food scientists must use their expertise to determine the best way to answer a specific research question. Data-analysis skills. Agricultural and food scientists, like other researchers, collect data using a variety of methods, including quantitative surveys. They must then apply standard data analysis techniques to understand the data and get the answers to the questions they are studying. Decision-making skills. Agricultural and food scientists must use their expertise and experience to determine whether their findings will have an impact on the food supply, farms, and other agricultural products. Observation skills. Agricultural and food scientists conduct experiments that require precise observation of samples and other data. Any mistake could lead to inconclusive

Page 9

or inaccurate results.

Certification

Agricultural and food scientists can get certifications from organizations like the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS), or the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). These certifications recognize expertise in agricultural and food science and enhance the status of those who are certified. According to the organizations, certification of professional expertise is broadly based on education, a comprehensive exam, and previous professional experience. Scientists must take continuing education courses every year to keep their certification, and they must follow the organization’s code of ethics. Certification is not required, but the agricultural and food science community recognizes its importance. The Heart Specialists:

Cardiovascular Technologists and Technicians

C

ardiovascular technologists and technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac (heart) and peripheral vascular (blood vessel) ailments. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians schedule appointments, review physicians’ interpretations and patient files, and monitor patients’ heart rates. They also operate and care for testing equipment, explain test procedures, and compare findings to a standard to identify problems. Other day-to-day activities vary significantly between specialties. Technologists may specialize in different areas of practice: invasive cardiology, non-invasive—which includes echocardiography—or vascular technology. Technicians specialize in electrocardiograms and stress testing. Invasive cardiology. Cardiovascular technologists specializing in invasive procedures are called cardiology technologists. They assist physicians with cardiac catheterization procedures in which a small tube, or catheter, is threaded through a patient’s artery from a spot on the patient’s groin to the heart. The procedure can determine whether a blockage exists in the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle or help to diagnose other problems. Some of these procedures may involve balloon angioplasty, which can be used to treat blockages of blood vessels or heart valves without the need for heart surgery. Cardiology technologists assist physicians as they insert a catheter with a balloon on the end to the point of the obstruction. Catheters are also used in electrophysiology tests, which help locate the specific areas of heart tissue that give rise to the abnormal electrical impulses that cause arrhythmias. Technologists prepare patients for cardiac catheterization by first positioning them on an examining table and then shaving, cleaning, and administering anesthesia to the top of their leg near the groin. During the procedures, they monitor patients’ blood pressure and heart rate with EKG

Technicians who specialize in electrocardiography, or EKG, stress testing, and perform Holter monitor procedures are known as cardiographic or electrocardiograph (or EKG) technicians. equipment and notify the physician if something appears to be wrong. Some cardiology technologists also prepare and monitor patients during open-heart surgery and during the insertion of pacemakers and stents that open up blockages in arteries to the heart and major blood vessels. Noninvasive technology. Technologists who specialize in echocardiography or vascular technology perform noninvasive tests. Tests are called “noninvasive” if they do not require the insertion of probes or other instruments into the patient’s body. For example, procedures such as Doppler ultrasound transmit high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body and then processes reflected echoes of the sound waves to form an image. Technologists view the ultrasound image on a screen and may record the image on videotape or photograph it for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician. Echocardiographers. Technologists who use ultrasound to examine the heart chambers, valves, and vessels are referred to as cardiac sonographers, or echocardiographers. They use ultrasound instrumentation to create images called echocardiograms. An echocardiogram may be performed while the patient is either resting or physically active. Technologists may administer medication to physically active patients to assess their heart function. Cardiac sonographers also may assist physicians who perform other procedures. Vascular technologists. Technologists who assist physicians in the diagnosis of disorders affecting the circulation are known as vascular technologists or vascular sonographers. Vascular technologists complete patients’ medical history, evaluate pulses and assess blood flow in arteries and veins by listening to the vascular flow sounds for abnormalities, and assure the appropriate vascular test has been ordered. Then they perform a noninvasive procedure using ultrasound instruments to record vascular information such as vascular blood flow, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, cerebral circulation, peripheral circulation, and abdominal circulation. Many of these tests are performed during or immediately after surgery. Vascular technologists then provide a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management. Cardiographic technicians. Technicians who specialize in electrocardiography, or EKG, stress testing, and perform Holter monitor procedures are known as cardiographic or electrocardiograph (or EKG) technicians. Technicians take EKGs, which trace electrical impulses transmitted by the heart, attach electrodes to the patient’s chest, arms, and legs, and then manipulate switches on an EKG machine to obtain a reading. An EKG is printed out for interpretation by the physician. This test is done before most kinds of surgery or as part of a routine physical examination. EKG technicians with advanced training perform Holter monitor and stress testing. For Holter monitoring, technicians place electrodes on the patient’s chest and attach a portable EKG monitor to the patient’s belt. Following 24 or more hours of normal activity by the patient, the technician removes a tape from the monitor and places it in a scanner. After checking the quality of the recorded impulses on an electronic screen, the technician usually prints the information from the tape for analysis by a physician. Physicians use the output from the scanner to diagnose heart ailments, such as heart rhythm abnormalities or problems with pacemakers. For a treadmill stress test, EKG technicians document the patient’s medical history, explain the procedure, connect the patient to an EKG monitor, and obtain a baseline reading and resting blood pressure. Next, they monitor the heart’s performance while the patient is walking on a treadmill, gradually increasing the treadmill’s speed to observe the effect of increased exertion. Like vascular technologists and cardiac sonographers, cardiographic technicians who perform EKGs, Holter monitoring, and stress tests are known as “noninvasive” technicians. Work environment. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians spend a lot of time walking and standing. Heavy lifting may be involved to move equipment or transfer patients. Those who work in catheterization laboratories may face stressful working conditions because they are in close contact with patients with serious heart ailments. For example, some patients may encounter complications that have life-or-death implications. Some cardiovascular technologists and technicians may have the potential for radiation exposure. However, exposure is kept to a minimum by strict adherence to radiation safety guidelines, such as wearing heavy protective aprons while conducting certain procedures. In addition, those who use sonography can be at an increased risk for musculoskeletal disorders such as carpel tunnel syndrome, neck and back strain, and eye strain. However, greater use of ergonomic equipment and an increasing awareness will continue to minimize such risks.

July 2013

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians must be reliable, have mechanical aptitude, and be able to follow detailed instructions. Technologists and technicians generally work a 5-day, 40-hour week that may include weekends. Those in catheterization laboratories tend to work longer hours and may work evenings. They also may be on call during the night and on weekends.

Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement

Cardiovascular technologists typically need an associate degree for entry-level employment. Most employers also require a professional credential. Technicians also receive on-the-job training. Education and training. The majority of cardiovascular technologists, vascular technologists, and cardiac sonographers complete a 2-year junior or community college program resulting in an associate degree. However, 4-year programs are increasingly available. The first year is dedicated to core courses and is followed by a year of specialized instruction in either invasive cardiovascular, noninvasive cardiovascular, or noninvasive vascular technology. Those who are qualified in an allied health profession need to complete only the year of specialized instruction. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) accredits cardiovascular technology education programs. In January 2009, there were 34 accredited programs. Similarly, those who want to study echocardiography or vascular sonography may also attend CAAHEP-accredited programs in diagnostic medical sonography. In 2009, there were 168 such accredited programs. Those who attend these accredited programs are eligible to obtain professional certification. Unlike most other cardiovascular technologists and technicians, most EKG technicians are trained on the job by an EKG supervisor or a cardiologist. On-the-job training for EKG technicians usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Most employers prefer to train people already in the healthcare field—nursing aides, for example. Some EKG technicians are students enrolled in 2-year programs to become technologists, working part time to gain experience and make contact with employers. For technicians who perform Holter

Page 13

monitoring on-the-job training may last around 18 to 24 months. One-year certification programs also exist for basic EKGs, Holter monitoring, and stress testing and can be an alternative to on-the-job training. Licensure and certification. Credentialing is voluntary. However, it is the professional standard and most employers require credentialing. Credentialing for cardiovascular technologists is available from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Most credentials require that technologists complete an accredited education program to qualify to sit for credentialing examination. Continuing education is required in most cases to maintain certification. For specific requirements, contact the credentialing body. Other qualifications. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians must be reliable, have mechanical aptitude, and be able to follow detailed instructions. A pleasant, relaxed manner for putting patients at ease is an asset. They must be articulate as they must communicate technically with physicians and also explain procedures simply to patients. Advancement. Technicians may advance to the technologist level of practice with supplemental formal education and credentialing. Technologists can advance to higher levels of the profession as many institutions structure the occupation with multiple levels, each having an increasing amount of responsibility. Advancement may occur through multiple credentialing in more than one cardiovascular specialty or through work experience. Technologists may also advance into supervisory or management positions. Other possibilities include working in an educational setting or conducting laboratory work.

Employment

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians held about 49,500 jobs in 2008. About 77 percent of jobs were in hospitals (public and private), primarily in cardiology departments. The remaining jobs were mostly in offices of physicians, including cardiologists, or in medical and diagnostic laboratories, including diagnostic imaging centers.

Job Outlook

Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average; technologists and technicians with multiple professional credentials, trained to perform a wide range of procedures, will have the best prospects. Employment change. Employment of cardiovascular technologists and technicians is expected to increase 24 percent through the year 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand will stem from the prevalence of heart disease and the aging population, because older people

have a higher incidence of heart disease and other complications of the heart and vascular system. Procedures such as ultrasound imaging and radiology are being performed more often as a replacement for more expensive and more invasive procedures. Due to advances in medicine and greater public awareness, signs of vascular disease can be detected earlier, creating demand for cardiovascular technologists and technicians to perform various procedures. Employment of vascular technologists and echocardiographers will grow as advances in vascular technology and sonography reduce the need for more costly and invasive procedures. However, fewer EKG technicians will be needed, as hospitals train nursing aides and others to perform basic EKG procedures. Individuals trained in Holter monitoring and stress testing are expected to have more favorable job prospects than those who can perform only a basic EKG. The rules governing reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid for medical procedures will affect the frequency of their use and demand for imaging technologists. Job prospects. In addition to job growth, job openings for cardiovascular technologists and technicians will arise from replacement needs as individuals transfer to other jobs or leave the labor force. Job prospects will be best for those with multiple professional credentials, trained to perform a wide range of procedures. Those willing to relocate or work irregular hours also will have better job opportunities. It is not uncommon for cardiovascular technologists and technicians to move between the specialties within the occupation by obtaining certification in more than one specialty. Technologists with multiple credentials will be the most marketable to employers.

10 Reasons Why Hospitality Jobs Are Great!

A

ccording to a survey by the British Hospitality Association (BHA), around 1.9 million people now work in the industry. The chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re one of them. You probably also know exactly why your industry is so popular, and why so many people want to work in it. Yes, the shifts can be long and tiring, but you’ll rarely find someone with a hospitality job who doesn’t have a passion for it. Here are just ten of the reasons why a career in hospitality is well...great!

1. You make people’s day

Whether you’re a concierge in a hotel, or a kitchen porter working behind the scenes, or even if you’re involved in the management of a hospitality business, every time you come into work you’re making someone’s day that little bit better. Your business is all about people. It’s not about widgets or spreadsheets; it’s about making people happy. So much so that there’s a dedicated website for it! Check it out and join in the Smiles of Britain Campaign.

2. It’s creative

As well as being a people-oriented industry, hospitality is creative. You are creating a product — be that food, drink, or an experience — and there’s always scope to dream up new ways of making it more enjoyable for your customers.

3. It opens a door to the world

Every country in the world has a hospitality industry, and the skills you learn here are readily transferable, meaning that a career in hospitality can very easily be the key to discovering new countries, new culture and new people. If you’re considering taking your skills abroad, our sister site, Catererglobal.com, is the place to go for international hospitality jobs, cruise ship jobs and jobs in the Middle East.

5. You can take on early responsibility

Just as there is the potential for rapid horizontal movement, you can also make your way up the ladder very quickly in hospitality. If you work hard, acquire your qualifications, get on with customers and colleagues, and show initiative, very soon, you’ll find yourself in a senior position managing people and projects.

6. Not 9-5

If you’re the sort of person who likes getting up at the same time in the morning, having the same breakfast, putting on a suit and tie, and then catching the same train into the same office, day after day after day, then hospitality probably isn’t for you. It involves a great deal of variety, not only in terms of the hours you work, but also the work you do during those hours.

7. Clear route in

There is a clear set of hospitality qualifications that are accepted across the industry and there are hundreds of places up and down the country where you can train to achieve those qualifications. You can find out more about getting qualified in our dedicated training section. Springboard, the hospitality charity, can help you with entry-level qualifications, 4. Rubbing shoulders with celebrities and gourmet meals are just some of the perks those in hotel jobs could enjoy.

9. Great atmosphere

In any workplace, there are always colleagues you don’t get on with, and one or two who are a bit unfriendly, but the good news is that not many work in hospitality. We don’t hire people who are unfriendly to our customers, which is why the hospitality industry contains some of the most vibrant, lively and fun people you’ll ever meet.

10. It’s a safe bet

People always need food, drink and somewhere to sleep, don’t they? So, even in shaky economic climates like the recent credit crunch, the hospitality industry is relatively secure. In fact, in late 2009, Bob Cotton, CEO of the BHA said of the recession: So what are you waiting for? Article provided by Caterer.com - The place for jobs in hospitality.

RESOURCES WORK: Careers in Mining, Oil and Gas H by Elka Torpey

ow would you like to make $40,000 or more per year with a high schooled ucation? Or make twice that with a college degree? If those earnings sound intriguing, consider exploring a career in mining or in oil and gas extraction. Overall, the industry pays better than most: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show that median annual wages of workers in mining, oil, and gas extraction were $46,100 in May 2011, compared with $34,460 for workers in all industries. And the industry had the highest starting salaries of any industry for 2012 bachelor’s degree recipients, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Earnings are high, in part, because of working conditions. For example, jobs might require workers to live in remote areas, be out at sea for weeks at a time, or spend long periods underground. And mining, oil, and gas workers can face potentially hazardous conditions. Still, much of the industry now relies on technology that has helped to make the work safer and more efficient. “It’s not a pick-andshovel operation. We have high-tech machines underground,” says Jeff Tutalo, manager of human resources at an underground coal mine in Grafton, West Virginia. “The skills you need to play video games are the types of skills you need to operate our equipment.” This article describes occupations in the mining, oil, and gas extraction industry. It does not include occupations related to the processing or distribution of these resources. The first section covers the industry’s employment and outlook. The second section highlights some common occupations. The third section discusses pros and cons of the work. The fourth section describes how to start a career in mining or oil and gas. And the fifth section provides sources for more information.

equal opportunity employment journal About the industry

Workers in the mining, oil, and gas extraction industry locate and remove a variety of natural resources—including coal, stone, and natural gas—from the earth. These resources are essential to our economy. They are used in many products around us. For example, oil is processed to make petroleum products, such as plastics, and minerals are used in computers. Stone provides building materials for construction, and coal and natural gas are used to create electricity. Current and projected employment levels in the industry vary by location, type of resource extracted, and other factors.

Industry employment Oil extraction jobs are often similar to natural gas extraction jobs, and workers can be involved in recovering both because natural gas is sometimes mixed with oil.

®

Mining, oil, and gas extraction is a relatively small industry in terms of employment. In May 2011, the industry employed about 693,000 workers, BLS data show. This contrasts sharply with the 11.6 million workers employed in manufacturing and the 5.5 million workers employed in construction, two other goods-producing industries. The extraction industry’s jobs include those in mining—in which workers remove minerals and Corporate Headquarters 530 Walnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19106 V: 215.922.8080 F: 215.922.8082

other non-oil and gas resources from the ground—and in oil and gas extraction. Mining jobs differ, depending on whether the extraction of resources takes place closer to the earth’s surface or deep underground. Underground mining, for example, usually employs workers in occupations such as mine shuttle car operators and roof bolters, among others, that are not part of surface mining. Oil extraction jobs are often similar to natural gas extraction jobs, and workers can be involved in recovering both because natural gas is sometimes mixed with oil. Within the mining, oil, and gas extraction industry, there are two types of employers: firms that own the oil and gas wells or mines and firms that offer support services. Support services firms have an important role in the industry, employing nearly half of all workers in May 2011. The resources that workers extract influence where they find jobs. Workers who extract nonmetallic minerals (such as limestone, granite, and sand) are employed in a number of states. Those who extract coal often work in states that include West Virginia, Kentucky, or Pennsylvania. Large numbers of workers in metal ore mining are employed in Nevada, Arizona, and Minnesota. And many workers who extract oil and gas are employed in Texas, Oklahoma, and California.

Industry outlook

BLS projects employment in the mining, oil, and gas extraction industry to grow by about 4 percent between 2010 and 2020—slower than the 14.3 percent growth projected for all industries during the decade. Most of the industry’s growth is expected to come from oil and gas extraction and nonmetallic mineral mining, which are projected to grow at 15 and 14 percent, respectively. Coal and metal ore mining employment is expected to decline, in part because of technologies that boost worker

productivity. Some studies, such as a November 2012 report by the International Energy Agency, predict stronger growth for mining, oil, and gas. These studies note some variables, such as increased demand and advances in extraction techniques that make it possible to access previously untapped resources, that could result in greater U.S. production and greater need for workers in the industry. Increasing retirements of workers should lead to good job prospects in this i ndustry. “There’s a huge amount of brain drain as far as aging workers,” says Brett Liming, a geologist in Golden, Colorado. “Baby-boomer retirements are happening everywhere, but they’re accentuated in oil and gas because there was tremendous hiring in the early 1970s and ’80s.” As the large group of people hired during that period starts to retire, industry employers will likely need to hire workers to replace them. But the industry is often marked by highs and lows in employment, and its future is hard to predict. Prices and demand for many of these resources fluctuate, for example, and employment and hiring reflect this volatility. A variety of global or political events, such as changing environmental laws, may also affect employment.

Working in mining, oil, and gas extraction

There are many occupations in mining, oil, and gas extraction. For most of the occupations workers typically have a high school diploma or less, plus on-the-job training. Occupations with the highest wages typically require a college degree. Three occupational areas criti-

Geoscientists and engineers sometimes work together on teams with other specialists. When determining which course of action to take, geoscientists and engineers might use modeling software or do simulation studies to assess options. A variety of geoscientists work in mining and oil and gas extraction. Engineering occupations involved in this industry include petroleum, mining and geological, and other engineers. Geoscientists. These workers analyze geological information from many sources, including rock or sediment samples and aerial photographs. They sometimes plan and conduct field studies or surveys to gather this information, but they might also work in a laboratory or on a computer to interpret findings. And they produce geologic maps, charts, and scientific reports to describe results. Geoscientists specialize in fields such as engineering, mine, petroleum, exploration, and environmental protection geology. For example, a petroleum geologist might test samples collected from drilling to determine whether oil Geoscientists study the earth to locate or gas is present. Petroleum engineers. extraction process. Occupations include reservoir, drilling, completions, and production engineers. Reservoir engineers estimate how much oil or gas can be recovered from underground deposits, known as reservoirs. They study a reservoir’s characteristics and determine which methods will get the most oil or gas out of the reservoir. And they monitor operations to ensure that the optimal levels of these resources are being recovered. Drilling engineers determine the best way to drill an oil or gas well, taking into account a number of factors, including cost. They also ensure that the drilling process is safe, minimally disruptive to the environment, and efficient. Completions engineers decide the optimal way to finish building a well so that the oil or gas will flow up from underground. They oversee this well-completions work, which might involve the use of tubing, hydraulic fracturing, or pressure control techniques. Production engineers take over after a well is completed. They typically monitor the well’s oil and gas production. If a well isn’t producing as much as it was expected to, production engineers figure out ways to help increase the amount being extracted. Mining and geological engineers. In mining, engineers develop plans for where and how to extract coal, metals, and nonmetallic minerals. For example, they might decide what types of workers, equipment, and processes to use. And they monitor construction and operations for safety and efficiency. These engineers also might determine how to reclaim land or to solve problems related to water or air pollution. Mining safety engineers specialize in making sure that a mine, including its workers and practices,

complies with all applicable safety rules.

Other engineers.

A range of other types of engineers work in the mining, oil, and gas industries. These workers include industrial, mechanical, civil, environmental, chemical, and electrical engineers. Their tasks vary, and they often work on teams with other types of engineers, helping to solve problems related to resource extraction.

Equipment operators

It takes a lot of expensive, high-tech equipment to get resources like oil, gas, coal, and minerals out of the ground. Job tasks for these workers include operating, maintaining, and, sometimes, fixing equipment. They also might oversee processes and direct other workers. Equipment operators typically need on-the-job training, work experience in a related occupation, or both. Industry sources suggest that these jobs are not usually available for entry-level workers; most people start out as helpers or have experience operating other types of large equipment. Occupations include drillers, derrick operators, wellhead pumpers, service unit operators, roof bolters, mining machine operators, and other equipment operators. Drillers. Both mining and oil and gas extraction rely on drillers to help reach resources deep in the earth. Modern drilling techniques often involve drilling down vertically and then drilling horizontally or in other directions for better access to resources. These workers operate a variety of types of drills. They select the proper drill and drill bits to use and attach additional drill bits, rods, and pipes as the drill reaches farther in the earth. They also control the

Most of the equipment these workers operate is similar to that found in the construction industry. For example, operating engineers and other construction equipment operators use machines such as bulldozers, graders, scrapers, and front-end loaders to do tasks such as moving or grading earth. Excavating and loading machine and dragline operators use equipment with scoops, shovels or buckets to dig and move dirt and other materials. And heavy and tractor trailer truck drivers operate a variety of trucks, including big dump trucks that carry loads as heavy as 300 tons.

Many people start out in the mining, oil, and gas industry as roustabouts, laborers, or extraction worker helpers. Workers in these occupations usually do different tasks, as needed. The jobs are often physically challenging. As they gain experience, these workers may move up to more complex jobs, which pay more than entry-level ones. A roustabout, for example, might eventually become a rotary driller helper, then advance to derrick operator before becoming a rotary driller. Roustabouts. On oil and gas rigs, roustabouts have a range of duties, including general maintenance and construction work. For example, they might paint, sweep, or mop decks and other rig structures. Or they might move or assemble pipes, equipment, or other materials and machinery. Other roustabout tasks include inspecting, maintaining, and fixing rig equipment. For example, roustabouts might look for leaks in oil or gas flow lines. If they find a leak or other problems, they then help to fix it. Laborers. Employed in both mining and oil and gas extraction, laborers are often in one of two categories: construction or material moving. Mining and extraction laborers who do construction-related tasks might, for example, put braces in place to support the sides of a mining excavation. Or they might put upor take apart oil rig scaffolding. These laborers also dig tunnels and mine shafts and refill excavations. Other laborers in mining and extraction move materials by hand from one place to another. These hand laborers might load and unload cargo from trucks, ships, or

containers. They sometimes sort the cargo. Or they help to carry pipes or equipment. Extraction worker helpers. Doing diverse tasks, extraction worker helpers assist other, more experienced workers at a mine, oil, or gas site. They work closely with a range of extraction workers, including drillers, derrick operators, and continuous mining machine operators. The types of tasks they do depend a lot on the types of extraction workers they help—and on the specific needs of those workers. For example, rotary driller helpers, sometimes called roughnecks, might help on an oil or gas rig by connecting pipes so that a drill can reach farther into the ground. Roof bolter helpers might align a roof bolting machine into the correct position so that the machine operator can accurately place support bolts in the roof of a mine. Other tasks for extraction worker helpers include monitoring equipment, helping to maintain equipment, and notifying workers of problems.

Pros and cons of extraction work

High pay attracts many people to the mining, oil, and gas industry. And the recent job market has been strong, BLS data show: In December 2012, the unemployment rate for workers in the industry was about 6.3 percent, lower than the 7.6 percent rate for all workers. The mining, oil, and gas extraction industry isn’t for everyone. But many who work in it enjoy what they do. “I love my job,” says Sandeep Pedam, a completions engineer in Houston, Texas. “I like knowing that I’m helping people to drive to work every day and to heat their homes during the winter.” Other workers like the opportunity to travel and see new places. “If you want to be part of one of the last industries with some adventure to it, this is one way to do it,” says Sid Banerjee of his job as a reservoir engineer in the oil and gas industry. His work has taken him to places as far away as Saudi Arabia and Argentina. However, mining, oil, and gas jobs are often in rural or remote areas that might require workers to be away from family and friends for long periods. “It’s hard work and long hours, especially if you’re in the field all the time,” says Pedam. Chemical engineer Elyse Landry of Houston, Texas, occasionally works offshore. “You work and sleep in the middle of the ocean on a platform,” she says. Nonstandard hours and schedules—including 12-hour shifts and work at night or on holidays and weekends—are common in some mining, oil, and gas jobs. For example, many extraction operations run 24 hours a day, so workers can be on the clock at almost any hour. Offshore, workers typically stay on an ocean platform for a week or more, working consecutive days without a break, and then have a block of time off. When a specific phase of a mine or well operation is complete, field workers often must change jobs or locations. And some jobs are seasonal; for example, a mineral mine might operate only during the warmer months. The frequent change is not for everyone. “If you’re the type of person who wants to be sure you know what happens next,” says Banerjee, “this probably isn’t the industry for you.” Banerjee doesn’t count himself among those types, however: the variety of jobs and experiencing new locations is what he likes best. Some workers in the industry are outside in all types of weather; others are underground. In both cases, their jobs may be hazardous. In 2011, the rate of injury and illness in the mining, oil, and gas industry was lower than that for all workers, BLS data show. But the fatality rate was higher in the industry than that for all workers. In spite of workers’ hardships in the industry, they enjoy the camaraderie among colleagues and crew. “I really like the people that I work with, both offshore and onshore,” says Landry. “I think the job that I’m doing is neat, but it wouldn’t be as fun if it wasn’t for the people.” Workers also share in their frustrations about how others view their work. “The perception of the industry is that we’re out there taking advantage of the environment,” says

Getting started in a career

There are many ways to get started in an occupation in the mining, oil, and gas industry. Some requirements are general for most workers; others are specific to occupations. Mining, oil, and gas workers often must be at least 18 years old, pass a drug test, and be in good physical condition. Many of these jobs require special skills, training and licensure, or work experience. And for some occupations, higher education is important. Skills. Employers prefer to hire people who work well on teams and have good decision-making and problem-solving skills. Communication skills, flexibility, and a willingness to learn a variety of tasks are also important. To succeed in the industry, workers also need determination. “You definitely need to be open to asking questions and be persistent and self driven,” says Landry. Another key for many workers is technological expertise, which may involve performing computer simulations, using joysticks and computers to operate equipment, or handling electronic detectors to identify leaks in oil or gas lines. And workers who operate or move heavy equipment or machinery need physical strength, eye-hand coordination, and good depth perception.

July 2013

Training and licensure. Many mining, oil, and gas workers learn on the job from more experienced workers. The training needed for competency varies by occupation. For example, extraction worker helpers typically need 1 month or less of on-the-job training. Equipment operators usually need more, typically between 1 and 12 months of on-the-job training. To work at a mine or on an oil rig, workers often must complete mandatory safety training. This training is usually provided or paid for by employers after workers are hired. In addition, some workers need special licenses, such as those required to drive heavy trucks or operate equipment. And employers occasionally require, or prefer to hire, engineers who are licensed.

Work experience

Work experience in a related occupation is typically needed for some mining, oil, and gas occupations. Excavating machine operators, for example, often must have worked as construction laborers or construction equipment operators. In many cases, workers start out in the industry as helpers or laborers before they are promoted to more specialized jobs. Sometimes, an oil and gas employer may require workers to have experience at an onshore oil or gas rig before it assigns them duties offshore. And employers often prefer to hire construction or other heavy equipment operators who have experience using similar types of large equipment. Apprenticeships are available in some occupations. For example, heavy equipment operators, such as those who operate graders or excavators, sometimes complete apprenticeship programs through the International Association of Operating Engineers.

Education and internships. Workers can qualify for many mining, oil, and gas jobs with little formal education. Other positions have specific educational requirements, with internships recommended. Roustabouts, laborers, rotary drill operators, wellhead pumpers, and service unit operators typically need less than a high school diploma. Some employers, however, might prefer to hire workers in these occupations who have finished their secondary education. Other workers, such as continuous mining machine operators or construction equipment operators, typically need a high school diploma. Most engineers need a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Although employers hire college graduates from a variety of engineering disciplines, mining or petroleum engineering studies are beneficial. Some engineers have a master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related field. A limited number of schools offer bachelor’s, master’s, or higher degrees in petroleum or mining engineering. Participating in internships during college is also important for engineering students who hope to start a career in mining, oil, and gas, say workers in the industry. “An internship is how you get jobs,” says Landry, “and it gives you a chance to test out the company and see if you enjoy this type of work.”

American Mismatch

July 2013

by Jillian Kay Melchior

There are plenty of jobs in manufacturing, but too few people with the necessary skills.

I

n September, 238,000 American jobs went unfilled, despite employers’ best efforts. At the same time, unemployment was at 7.8 percent nationally. And believe it or not, this was no statistical oddity. The manufacturing sector has long had trouble finding skilled applicants for its jobs. Around 48 percent of manufacturing companies are looking to hire, according to the most recent report from ThomasNet, a company that helps connect producers and suppliers. But 67 percent of manufacturing companies see a moderate to severe shortage of skilled workers, and last year, as many as 600,000 jobs went unfilled, according to a report from Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute. This mismatch embodies the best and worst of American culture. On the one hand, American manufacturers have bested their international competition, becoming even more efficient after their recent struggles. On the other, there’s been a cultural shift that denigrates the value of manufacturing work, instead pushing young people into ever more impractical fields of study. The manufacturing sector’s triumph is pretty remarkable. The U.S. is the world’s largest manufacturer, contributing 18.2 percent of the total value added in worldwide production. (China, despite its abundance of cheap labor, comes in second at 17.6 percent.) Though other sectors are panicking In high schools, “there’s been such a focus on — and this is going about a fiscal cliff and putting expansion on hold, American manufacturing to sound terrible — kids going to school,” she said. “Not every kid is is plowing ahead. You’ve got all these kids who are coming out of this year. college, and they can’t find a job. It’s heartbreaking.” The manufacturing sector is also almost uniquely good to its employees. degrees who just can’t find a job. They just don’t have the skills.” If there’s been a cultural shift away from manufacturing and toward academic achievement, look to the government, says Lindsey Burke, Will Skillman Fellow in Education at the Heritage Foundation. “So much of it is the continued push to increase federal subsidies to incentivize students to go get a four-year degree when it might not be the right fit,” she said. The federal government has made access to student loans easier than ever before. Since 1982, the number of federal education subsidies and Pell grants has increased by 475 percent, Burke said. Programs once targeted at increasing the number of low-income students have been expanded to include many middle-class children. That’s driven up college costs, saddled graduates with high debt, and deflated the value of a four-year degree. Furthermore, many in the manufacturing sector say, it’s made young people turn up their noses at good manufacturing jobs.

Tailored Label Products participates in the local Second Chance program, which works with high-school sophomores who have fallen behind track for graduation. Six Facts about W O M E N in The Workforce We

are now three to four decades into studying the differences between women and men. Much has been learned, but little has changed about the way the “male system” dominates the business world. Gender is the most powerful determinant of how a person views the world and everything in it, more powerful than age, income, race, or geography. What else has changed over the last three to four decades as well are all the dynamic facts around gender roles, woman empowerment, college graduation rates, work force participation, consumer spending, etc. Here are six true statements about the current status of women in the workforce:

FACT 1: W omen are now the majority of the workforce in the USA

This occurred in the first half of 2010 for the first time in American history, and now women make up 51% of the professional workers in the USA. 70% of American women with children under 18 are earning a paycheck while raising their children. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women now hold 51.4% of managerial and professional jobs – up from 26.1% in 1980. Women are 54% of all accountants and hold about half of all banking and insurance jobs. Women are about onethird of the physicians and 45% of the associates in law firms – and both percentages are rising fast. And, in the EU, women have filled 6 million of the 8 million new jobs since 2000.

FACT 2: W omen now earn almost 60% of university degrees in the USA and Europe.

Women’s education is changing to more marketable subjects. In 1966, 40% received a BA specializing in education and 2% in business and management. Now its 12% education and 50% business and management. Women earn only 20% of the degrees in engineering and computer science. In the USA, women earn 57% of the bachelor’s degrees and 59% of the master’s degrees. Women are 51% of those enrolled in medical school and nearly half of those in law school.

FACT 3: I n the USA, women make or influence 80% of consumer spending decisions.

Women purchases extend way beyond food, health, and beauty. Yes, women do purchase 65% of apparel. But they also purchase 52% of all new vehicles, including trucks, and influence 80% of those purchases. They purchase 45% of consumer electronics and influence 61%. And women purchase 80% of family health care decisions, 70% of travel decisions, 55% of wine, and 20% of homes (and influence 91%). 90% of women participate in decisions that affect their household’s retirement and investment accounts.

FACT 4: Only 3% of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women.

Unfortunately, even though women’s influence has grown in other areas of business and management, the percentage and number of Fortune 500 CEOs has never risen much above 3%. We know many of the names – Meg Whitman at eBay, Carly Fiorina at H-P, Anne Mulcahy and Ursula Burns at Xerox, Indra Nooyi at PepsiCo, etc. Female CEOs may be rare in America’s largest companies, but they are highly prized. Last year, they out earned their male counterparts by 43% on average.

FACT 5: W omen are increasingly opting to become entrepreneurs rather than languish in stalled careers.

Organizations need to focus on retaining the female half of the workforce to keep the talent pipeline full at all levels and avoid the enormous costs of retraining and recruiting new replacement talent. Over 75% of workers say their company has implemented gender-parity initiatives, such as flex-work programs and mentorship, but many feel these programs are not effective. Only 48% of the men polled feel achieving gender-parity should be a critical business imperative while 84% of the women do. However, in the past decade the number of privately owned companies started by women in the USA has increased twice as fast as the number owned by men. Women-owned companies employ more people than the largest 500 companies combined. The U.S. Census Bureau surveys show a 20% increase in women-owned businesses in 2007 over 2002, now accounting for 7.8 million non-farm U.S. businesses. California, Texas, and New York are the top three states. And in China, women own more than 40% of private businesses.

FACT 6: Women make 13% to 23% less than men.

While this is very hard to measure as there are many variables from industry, occupation, profession, hours worked, etc., the pay gap has changed very little since 2001. Some of this gap is due to motherhood. Childless women in corporate America earn almost as much as men. Mothers with partners earn less and single mothers earn much less. Female programmers make 93% as much as their male counterparts. Female physicians only make 61% as much as the male physicians. Sources:

22 Things Happy People Do Differently

T

by Dr. Mercola

he truth is, happiness doesn’t come from wealth, perfect looks or even a perfect relationship. Happiness comes from within. This is why, if you truly want to be happy, you need to work on yourself, first.

M

any people spend their lives waiting to be happy. You may think, “if only I had more money,” or “could lose weight,” or you fill in the blank, then I would be happy. Well here’s a secret: you can be happy right now. It’s not always easy, but you can choose to be happy, and in the vast majority of circumstances there’s no one who can stop you except for yourself.

People who are thankful for what they have are better able to cope with stress, have more positive emotions, and are better able to reach their goals. The best way to harness the positive power of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal or list, where you actively write down exactly what you’re 22 Positive Habits of grateful for each day. Kindness is not only contagious, it’s also proven to make you happier. When you’re kind to others, your brain produces feelgood hormones and neurotransmitters like serotonin and you’re able to build strong relationships with others, fostering positive feelings all around.

3. R egard your problems as challenges

Change your internal dialogue so that anytime you have a “problem” you view it as a challenge or a new opportunity to change your life for the better. Eliminate the word “problem” from your mind entirely.

4. E xpress gratitude for what you have

Lincoln County Healthcare is a full-service health care system with more than 1,000 employees. LCH offers a positive work atmosphere and competitive benefits.

7. Speak well of others

It may be tempting to gather around the office water cooler to get and give the daily gossip, but talking negatively about others is like taking a bath in negative emotions; your body soaks them up. Instead, make it a point to only say positive, nice words about other people, and you’ll help foster more positive thinking in your own life as well.

8. Avoid making excuses

It’s easy to blame others for your life’s failures, but doing so means you’re unlikely to rise past them. 9. Live in the present

Allow yourself to be immersed in whatever it is you’re doing right now, and take time to really be in the present moment. Avoid replaying past negative events in your head or worrying about the future; just savor what’s going on in your life now.

Getting up at the same time every day (preferably an early time) is deceptively simple. Exercise boosts levels of health-promoting brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which may help buffer some of the effects of stress and also relieve some symptoms of depression. Rather than viewing exercise as a medical tool to lose weight, prevent disease, and live longer – all benefits that occur in the future – try viewing exercise as a daily tool to immediately enhance your frame of mind, reduce stress and feel happier.

19. Live minimally

Your life is unique, so don’t measure your own worth by comparing yourself to those around you. Even regarding yourself as better than your peers is detrimental to your happiness, as you’re fostering judgmental feelings and an unhealthy sense of superiority. Measure your own success based on your progress alone, not that of others.

Clutter has a way of sucking the energy right out of you and replacing it with feelings of chaos. Clutter is an often-unrecognized source of stress that prompts feelings of anxiety, frustration, distraction and even guilt, so give your home and office a clutter makeover, purging it of the excess papers, files, knick knacks and other “stuff” that not only takes up space in your physical environment, but also in your mind.

12. Surround yourself with positive people

The saying “misery loves company” is entirely true. That’s why you need to choose friends who are optimistic and happy themselves, as you will be surrounded with positive energy.

13. Realize that you don’t need others’ approval

It’s important to follow your own dreams and desires without letting naysayers stand in your way. It’s fine to seek others’ opinions, but happy people stay true to their own hearts and don’t get bogged down with the need for outside approval.

Every time you lie, your stress levels are likely to increase and your self-esteem will crumble just a little bit more. Plus, if others find out you’re a liar it will damage your personal and professional relationships. Telling the truth, on the other hand, boosts your mental health and allows others to build trust in you.

people tend to be healthy people, and vice versa, so in addition to healthy food and exercise, the following lifestyle strategies can also help to support emotional wellness: Proper sleep: Sleep deprivation is linked to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and bipolar depression, while getting the right amount of sleep has been linked to positive personality characteristics such as optimism and greater self-esteem, as well as a greater ability to solve difficult problems.2 Animal-based omega-3 fats: Low concentrations of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA are known to increase your risk for mood swings and mood disorders. Those suffering from depression have been found to have lower levels of omega-3 in their blood, compared to non-depressed individuals. Krill oil is my preferred source of omega-3 fats. Regular sun exposure: This is essential for vitamin D production, low levels of which are linked to depression. But even beyond vitamin D, regular safe sun exposure is known to enhance mood and energy through the release of endorphins. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): If difficult life circumstances and the negative emotions they create are making happiness hard to come by, try EFT, which is a form of do-it-yourself psychological acupressure. This simple technique can help clear your body and mind of negative emotions so you can implement positive goals and habits more easily in your life. Over 15 years ago Dr Mercola founded Mercola.com. Managing An Online Business

hat would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? When a friend asked Ann Drew Yu that question, it prompted her to open her imagination. Eventually, she decided to take a risk and start her own business: developing an inspirational product that she now sells online. An English teacher turned stay-at-home mom, Ann designed a product—a box with cards and other tools—to help girls and women direct their lives in a positive way. Her original idea was so popular, Ann created a different version for classrooms. Ann likes that online sales have allowed her to connect with people as far away as Australia. “Having an online business gives me the reach of the world,” she says. “It gives me a platform to share what I think is a really useful and meaningful product.” As online shopping has grown,

so too has the number of people who make money selling products online. Online sellers can sell just about anything. Some, like Ann, design or create the products themselves. Others sell new merchandise, antiques, or used items, like books or toys. Starting an online business can be as simple as having something to sell and access to the Internet. But there are a lot of factors to consider if you’re going to have a business that thrives. One is to have confidence in your idea, especially early on. “You really have to believe in what you’re doing, because it’s a twisty and bumpy road at times,” says Ann.

No formal education is required to become an online seller. Still, it’s important to have good writing skills for crafting product descriptions and other web content, strong organizational and bookkeeping ability for keeping track of earnings and expenses, and resourcefulness for figuring out how to get products noticed. “If I didn’t really believe in what I’m doing, I’m sure I would have walked away by now.” Another factor for business success is helping your product to stand out among the millions of other products online. Search engine optimization is one way that online sellers like Ann ensure that their website link appears at or near the top of the results when people search for a product. “You can have the most useful or beautiful product ever,” Ann says, “but connecting it to the right people defines whether you have a business.” One of the easiest ways to start selling online is to set

Success for most online sellers doesn’t happen overnight: It takes a lot of hard work and a willingness to adapt as you go along. up an account with an established shopping website, which brings in customers and provides guidance on how to sell online, usually at some cost to the seller. A leading site recommends that you start out selling an item you already have, to get a feel for how the process works. In addition to deciding what to sell, you should also consider how much to charge, who will buy it, and how to sell to those buyers: through your own website or an online shopping site. Other decisions, such as shipping options and whether to accept returns, are important, too. And creating your own product also requires being able to make what you are going to sell. Before Ann could make her box a reality, for example, she needed to find a manufacturer that could produce it for her. A friend who worked in merchandising helped Ann find a company that would make the boxes. Online sellers do a variety of tasks. They photograph and write descriptions of the items they will sell and put the information online. They calculate total purchase amounts, taxes, and shipping costs; process

payments; and send orders. And they interact with customers to answer questions or resolve problems. Many online sellers spend a lot of time promoting their products, either online— through social media, email, newsletters, advertisements, or blogs—or in their communities. Ann, for example, gives workshops and speaks in schools. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have earnings or employment data for online sellers. But earnings for online sellers, like those for any self-employed workers, depend on factors such as demand for their products and how much money the sellers take in after accounting for expenses. Keeping products affordable and competitively priced, while still making a profit, is often difficult when selling online, because consumers can easily compare products and prices. Even for successful sellers, earnings fluctuate—so it’s important not to rely too heavily on potential earnings from an online business. “If we were relying on my income alone instead of my husband’s,” Ann says of her family’s finances, “I would

Page 33

not have been able to quit my day job.” As self-employed workers, online sellers have other expenses, too. These often include health insurance and saving for retirement. Prospective sellers should also check to see if they need a seller’s permit or if their state has other requirements for people who sell products online. Frequently, online sellers work part time at their business, perhaps holding another job or, like Ann, raising a family. Work hours are often irregular, as sellers occasionally need to work additional or unusual hours to fill orders. But they have more control over their schedules than does someone who works a traditional, 9-to-5 job. No formal education is required to become an online seller. Still, it’s important to have good writing skills for crafting product descriptions and other web content, strong organizational and bookkeeping ability for keeping track of earnings and expenses, and resourcefulness for figuring out how to get products noticed. Some level of technical skill for creating and managing an online presence is helpful, says Ann. Although other online sellers may work on search engine optimization and site design themselves, Ann hires people to do these tasks for her. But technical ability and other skills aren’t always enough to turn a good idea into a profitable venture. Success for most online sellers doesn’t happen overnight: It takes a lot of hard work and a willingness to adapt as you go along. “When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not following a path,” says Ann. “You’re learning from what other people have done, sure, but you’re making your own way.” Article provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Your Career As A

Healthcare Executive

ou will make decisions about your career throughout your life. No matter what stage of the decision-making process you are in, we hope that this essay will give you a better understanding of the exciting profession of healthcare management. Healthcare is one of today’s most dynamic and growing fields, with a wide range of opportunities and challenges. Healthcare executives work in a variety of settings, including hospitals and integrated delivery systems, managed care organizations, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, and consulting firms, to name a few. The American College of Healthcare Executives wants to help you make a positive, informed decision about your career. You can count on us as a resource for career advice, resume consultation, continuing education, and other career services.

Healthcare: A Changing System

Healthcare is changing more rapidly than almost any other field. The field is changing in terms of how and where care is delivered, who is providing those services, and how that care is financed.

Healthcare is changing more rapidly than almost any other field. The field is changing in terms of how and where care is delivered, who is providing those services, and how that care is financed. These changes are being driven primarily by the growth of managed care. A number of other current trends are expected to continue, including: • Integration of healthcare delivery organizations to create accessible, appropriate, and comprehensive care pathways for all people • Continual advances in medical technology • Collaboration among provider organizations, physicians, businesses, insurers, and others to improve community health status • Increased emphasis on disease prevention and wellness promotion • An elderly population that will grow exponentially with the “Baby Boomer” generation • Better-informed patients demanding high-quality care • Pressure from business, government, insurers, and patients to control costs and demonstrate the value of the services delivered • Efforts to implement continuous quality improvement initiatives similar to those found in other fields

This is an exciting time for healthcare management. The field requires talented people to help introduce and manage the changes taking place. In their roles, healthcare executives have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to improving the health of the communities their organizations serve. As a result of the transformation taking place in the healthcare system, career options for healthcare executives are becoming more diverse. Increasingly, positions for healthcare executives may be found in a wide variety of settings, such as: • Ambulatory care facilities • Consulting firms • Healthcare associations • Home health agencies • Hospices • Hospitals and hospital systems • Integrated delivery systems • Long-term care facilities • Managed care organizations (such as HMOs and PPOs) • Medical group practices • Mental health organizations • Public health departments • University or research institutions Today, an estimated 100,000 people occupy health management positions at numerous organizational levels, from department head to chief executive officer. Requirements for senior-level positions in healthcare organizations are demanding, but these jobs also offer opportunities to improve the system of care giving. With the growing diversity in the healthcare system, many executives are needed in settings other than the traditional hospital. However, competition is intense at all job levels, and many positions that previously required only a bachelor’s degree now require a master’s degree. Each year, about 2,000 students receive graduate degrees in healthcare

Top 5 Excuses for Not Getting Your Dream Career by Anita Web Weaver

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life; most of them never happened.” Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) s that beloved American writer, Excuse Number Three: I don’t Mark Twain, points out in this know what to do to get there.

A

quotation, our lives are often filled with worry. We worry about how our kids will turn out. We worry about whether we’ll keep our job. We worry about whether we’ll get a job.We worry about whether our savings plan will recover. We worry about what that pain in our right side means. In short, we fill our days with worry and concern. Even when times are good, we worry. What about you? Think about all the worries you’ve spent time on this past week, this past month, this past year. Then think about all the things you worried about over the years. You may be appalled to realize how much time you’ve spent worrying compared to the actual events which may have happened related to your worry. In these economic times, many people allow their worry to prevent them from going for their dream career. They excuse their inaction based on what they see happening around them. Here are some of the key excuses people use to keep themselves from going for it:

Excuse Number One: It’s not the right time to make a move.

This excuse keeps you in your comfort zone. It allows you the shallow comfort of pretending you don’t have the guts or perseverance or talent to go for a meaningful career. It really says you believe you are at the mercy of external circumstances. The great achievers have never lived from that belief. No matter what the circumstances, they did what they wanted and needed to do.Their only question was whether the timing was right for their individual life. Then they proceeded to pursue their purpose.

Excuse Number Two: What if I can’t do it?

This excuse takes worry to an exponential degree. It stops you in your tracks before you even start. If a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, this excuse stops you from taking the very first step. Instead of using this excuse to stop you from having a meaningful career, think about how your life could change if you did take that first step, and then another and another. How could you life be different a year from now if you had that dream career? How will it feel if you’re still wondering about whether to step out?

This excuse keeps you stuck in confusion which leads to paralysis. Think about a time in your life when you had to do something but didn’t know how to do it. It could be as simple as learning to ice skate or change an electrical switch. What did you do to get the information and support you needed so that you could move forward? Now apply that same strategy to reaching for that meaningful career you’ve been longing to have. Who could you talk to? What print and online resources might exist to help you? Do you want to talk to a career coach to help facilitate your transition? Just change your thinking from, “I don’t know what to do,” to “How can I do this?”

Excuse Number Four: It will take too long.

This kind of thinking will stop you from undertaking almost any new activity. Once that happens, my friends, you might as well say it’s over. We know from adult learning theory that continuing to learn new things keeps us energized. New studies even help us create new brain cells. You are never too old to undertake new things! However long it will take you to develop your career purpose, three, five or seven years from now, you will be three, five or seven years older anyway! So, go for it. You can create joy in expressing your career purpose at any age.

You may need to allow yourself to become excited again about the possibility of having a meaningful career. But you can change—if you choose to do so. Baldwin Filters provides many opportunities for you to further your career. We offer a variety of established career paths in engineering, accounting, marketing, sales, business analysis, human resources, information technology and production. To view a complete listing of open positions at Baldwin Filter, visit online at: www.baldwinfilter.com

Excuse Number Five: Why bother? It’ll never work anyway.

4400 East Highway 30 • Kearney, NE 68847 Baldwin Filters is an EO Employer, M/F/V/D

This excuse is giving up before you get started. It says that you may have had the longing for a dream career and purposeful life for a long time; it hasn’t happened yet so it feels like you’ll be stuck forever in this state of longing-but-not-having. It’s not true! As long as you’re alive you can find a way to get what you want. You may need to take your mind off worry and longing. You may need to find some help. You may need to allow yourself to become excited again about the possibility of having a meaningful career. But you can change - if you choose to do so. Don’t let these excuses, and others, stop you. Don’t come to the end of your life wishing you had lived your career purpose. Rather, throw away these meaningless excuses and begin to move in a positive direction. Here’s to living excuse-free.

How To Maximize Your Productivity

A job that matters at Spartanburg Regional

A

s I mentioned before, when you’re overloaded with information and tasks, trying to get everything done usually ends up being an exercise in futility. Learning to focus only on the essential things, using the 80/20 rule, and breaking through your mental blocks that lead to procrastination will put you well ahead of the game. But there are even more ways you can increase your efficiency and save time, so you can spend it on the things you really want to do. Here are eight simple ways to be more productive with less effort:

1. First things first

Eliminate everything else – Once you’ve decided which 20 percent of your tasks are most likely to bring you the most value, your job is to focus your attention on these tasks FIRST, every day. Getting in the habit of crossing off your most essential tasks first thing in the morning, before other “emergencies” have time to consume your time, will make your productivity soar. Step two: eliminate everything else. Sound scary? Not to worry. Take a look at your list of tasks again. What items on there are not essential? Could you drop it from your schedule completely? Can you delegate it to someone else? If you can’t get rid of it right now, put it on a “less essential” list, and after you’ve completed your most important tasks, go back and do some of these when you have the time. After a while, you might come to realize that things you thought were necessary weren’t really necessities at all.

2. Eliminate distractions

Constant interruptions are productivity’s enemy number one. This includes email notifications, IM’s, your cell phone, RSS reader, gadgets and widgets and social networking forums. Turn everything off, disconnect yourself from the internet, clear your work space of non-essential papers to increase your concentration and focus on your chosen task.

3. Work in 90 Minute Intervals

Now here is the key. Arrange your day to have 90 minutes of absolutely uninterrupted time, no phone calls, no email, absolutely no interruptions. Then work on one of these goals for the entire 90 minutes. Stop at 90 minutes. Don’t do more without taking a break. You can continue these 90-minute cycles of uninterrupted work on your top goals as long as your schedule of other responsibilities will allow. This is a very effective and profoundly powerful strategy that I learned from Tony Schwartz and I would strongly encourage you to pick up his book, The Power of Full Engagement.

You entered health care to make a difference. Spartanburg Regional offers a cutting-edge, team environment where you can do just that. Having achieved top honors—including the Magnet award for nursing excellence—we make it a priority to remain on the forefront of health care. And, recognizing that top honors are a result of top professionals, we offer competitive salary and benefit packages, a nationally recognized child development program and more. Find, and use, the simplest tools to get the job done. Fidgeting with ultra-cool applications that you’re not fully familiar with, using complicated, multi-layered calendars and other fancy gadgets can actually eat up more time than they save you. By selecting simple, no-frills tools, you can stop thinking about the tool and focus only on the task at hand.

5. Do one thing at a time

Once you’ve simplified your work down to your most important tasks, eliminated everything non-essential, including time-draining distractions, you should now be quite productive with what’s left.

How efficient are you really when you’re trying to divide your focus between ten different things? Let’s face it. Multi-tasking is usually a waste of time. You’re guaranteed to finish a task faster, and with less effort, if you concentrate on doing that one thing, without letting yourself be pulled in multiple directions. This is one of the key Tony Schwartz principles. You need to stop multi-tasking, as it radically decreases your productivity. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Lumping together similar tasks that are in your bottom 80 percent, or that don’t require your full attention can save you time. You could open and sort your mail while talking on the phone, exercise while catching up on your favorite TV show, or listen to an audio book while commuting to work, for example.

6. Find quiet time

Not everyone has the luxury of a quiet working environment, but you need some quiet time each day that you can call your own, where you don’t have to work. Reading your RSS feeds or going through your email does not count! The trick is to get away from the information overload; to unplug and unwind in a place where you can gain daily perspective to see what’s important to you. This could be through reading, taking a bath, walking in nature, exercising or meditating. Watching TV might be relaxing to some, but I’d recommend you at least avoid the news programs. Information comes at you from all angles, all day long. Learning to be selective in what information you let in can boost your productivity immensely. And, to hear your own inner voice, complete disconnect from all information media might at times be necessary.

7. Maximize the impact of your work

Do you finish a great project, or create something fantastic and then move on to the next thing? Then you’re shortchanging your full potential. Taking the extra time to maximize the impact of the work you just did; promoting it to get attention and the recognition you deserve, is what will lead to more business and new job opportunities. Once you’ve created “the next big thing,” promote it, show it off; find ways to make it carry you as far as it can take you. This task could be that 20 percent that gives you 80 percent of the payoff for all the work you just put in.

8. Simplify, simplify, simplify

Once you’ve simplified your work down to your most important tasks, eliminated everything non-essential, including time-draining distractions, you should now be quite productive with what’s left. However, the minutiae of distractions and the unnecessary have a natural tendency to creep back in if you’re not taking the time to pay attention. So, every now and then, review what you’re doing and the information you allow in. Then, simplify some more. You can also simplify your work load and save lots of time by standardizing tasks that you have to do more than once, such as shopping lists, certain business letters, spread sheets and project outlines, for example. Emerging Trends In Nursing Jobs

T

by Bill Sterzenbach

he nursing profession has witnessed tremendous changes in the last five decades. In this continually changing environment, it is important to study the trends in nursing jobs in order to determine a successful career path. Today the demand for Registered Nurses or RNs has increased considerably, because of two factors. Firstly, relatively less fresh enrolment down the years since the turn of the century along with retirements of extant RNs has led to a shortage of trained nurses. Secondly, there is an increase in a nurse’s range of function, with rise in the number of the elderly due to improved healthcare systems and the introduction of community-based preventive projects. According to the Federal Bureau of Health professions, “In 2000, the National supply of FTE registered nurses was estimated at 1.89 million, while the demand was projected at 2 million, a shortage of 110,000, or 6 percent. Based on what is known about trends in the supply of RNs and their anticipated demand, the shortage is expected to grow relatively slowly until it reaches 12 percent”. (Source http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/ healthworkforce/reports/rnproject/report.htm) It is clearly a time for those interested in healthcare professions to join nursing, and those already working as qualified nurses to consider specialization. Pay hikes in the nursing industry in recent years are a good incentive, though the number of nurses existing is still short of that in demand. Some of the trends in the area of nursing jobs well worth considering can be both well paid and challenging. Becoming a traveling nurse has long been a popular option since some agencies began to work with traveling nurses in order to cater for temporary shortfalls in certain areas. It can combine the advantages of traveling free of cost to see a new place while enjoying free housing and other benefits. This also provides the opportunity to add a premier hospital to one’s resume. Staff nursing at Magnet hospitals is also a good option. They involve their nurses in decisions affecting the patient and the work environment and allow participation in shared governance structures. In the aftermath of a natural disaster like Katrina, the most immediately perceived need was for someone to be able to combine clinical skills with information technology. The need for electronic medical records was emphasized in the wake of the devastation left behind by the hurricane. This is the purview of the nurse informatics who can find a niche in various areas including corporations that hire them for positions in R&D and sales, as they are able to demonstrate products to the customers. They can branch into teaching and training positions in the academia, or as systems analysts, or information officers in hospitals. There is also a surging demand for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners who provide care in critical situations, where the patients have advanced, acute or chronic problems. They are usually found in Intensive Care Units but also work in various other areas including pediatrics, psychiatry or anesthetics. They obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, and even plan and direct treatments and investigations. Another option for the ACNPs can be in the area of genetic nursing. The mapping of the human genome means that the importance of genes and genetics in certain medical conditions cannot be ignored, and there is a need for trained nurses to simplify the geneticists’ prognosis and interpret test results for the patients and their families. Such nurses work in regional genetics networks, specialty genetic labs, and help in education, counseling, and testing. Modern medicine requires special implants and insertions in the patient’s body for a long-term venous access, especially in the case of chemotherapy or antibiotic therapies. The infusion nurses do this successfully and are usually on call in various hospitals. End-of-life nursing is another trend that has renewed interest in hospice and palliative care, and is likely to be increasingly on demand in an aging population and a national consciousness towards dignifying the death experience. Also in a post 9/11 world where the threat of bio-terrorism looms large, nursing in Public Health is seeing increased investments. In an era of technological advancements, increasing opportunities in healthcare professions and better incentives than ever before, the nursing practice is sure to become more popular, and meet increasing demands for care, comfort, knowledge and support.

It is clearly a time for those interested in healthcare professions to join nursing, and those already working as qualified nurses to consider specialization. Article source: www.ezinearticles.com

How to Become a Licensed Practical or Licensed Vocational Nurse

Licensed practical and vocational nurses take tissue samples to check for illnesses. Becoming a licensed practical or licensed vocational nurse requires completing an approved educational program. LPNs and LVNs must also have a license.

Education

LPNs and LVNs must complete an accredited program, which takes about 1 year. These programs are commonly in technical schools and community colleges. They may occasionally be in high schools and hospitals as well. Practical nursing programs combine classroom learning in subjects such as nursing, biology, and pharmacology, with supervised clinical experience. These programs give certificates in practical nursing. Contact your state’s board of nursing for a list of approved programs.

college degree is often the key to jumpstarting a career. And data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) consistently show that workers who have a college degree earn more than workers who don’t. Not surprisingly, a college education is increasingly popular. For example, according to the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), postsecondary enrollment at all levels grew between fall 1980 and fall 2010—from about 12 million to 21 million students. Those students were less than half of the college-age population in 1980 but about 70 percent in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The cost of attending college rose during that time as well. NCES data also show that between academic years 1980–81 and 2010– 11, the cost of college, adjusted for inflation, more than doubled at both public and private institutions. But sources of money to help students pay for college haven’t kept pace. And some types of financial assistance, such as state-funded aid, have shrunk. “The result is that, today, student debt is largely unavoidable,” says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of financial aid websites Fastweb and FinAid. This article is a guide to affording higher education. The first section describes ways to plan for college expenses before enrolling. The second section explains how to finance higher education. The third section offers tips for money management before, during, and after college. Resources for more information are listed at the end of the article. Strategies described in this article focus primarily on attendance at 4-year colleges and universities. However, the information is broadly applicable to different levels of higher education. Also, keep in mind that some financial aid details, such interest rates and tax incentives, may change. (Check to see if rates and rules have changed since this article was published.) Many students enroll in 2- or 4-year colleges immediately after high school. But older students also attend these colleges to improve their skill sets and prepare for higher level careers. The box on page 16 outlines some alternatives for students who are unsure whether enrolling in college right after high school is the best strategy for them.

Planning for college costs

Some of the most important strategies for making higher education affordable begin before it’s time to enroll in college. Strategies such as saving money and earning college credits are most effective the earlier students start. Others, including choosing schools and applying for college admission and financial aid, may require waiting until the final year of high school.

Save money, earn money

In the long run, it’s cheaper to pay for college by saving money than by borrowing it. That’s because savers earn interest, whereas borrowers pay it. And the earlier students start saving, the better—but it’s never too late to start.

Students can save money by completing some courses at a less expensive school, such as a community college, and then transferring the credits to the college or university in which they enroll. Students should also find out what their future earnings might look like, by studying wage data from sources such as the Occupational Outlook Handbook, so they know what type of student loan repayment they can afford. Those who aspire to a military career may want to look into schools that pay expenses in exchange for service after graduation. For example, the five federal military academies provide students with tuition, room, and board; at four of the academies, students commit to serve in the U.S. military for a specific number of years after graduation. Some states also have public military academies that may pay partial tuition and expenses. Shop for schools. Prospective students should research schools to find ones that fit them best. Whatever a student’s personal criteria, graduating within 4 years should be part of any strategy for cutting back on expenses. Students can usually find multiple schools that meet their conditions for attending. A list that includes more than one can mean big savings. “Even if you’re set on a school, you should look at others,” says Megan McClean, managing director of policy and federal relations at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. “You might be able to get the same education for less somewhere else.” Along with researching more obvious choices, students may want to consider alternatives that offer a unique curriculum, reduced tuition, or both. For example, bachelor’s degree-level work colleges have free or low-cost tuition for students who take classes and also work, usually

10 to 15 hours per week, in activities on campus as part of their degree program. Experts recommend taking time when evaluating each school that is being considered: stay overnight on campus, attend a class, speak to instructors and current students, and visit the financial aid office. “You’re buying the equivalent of a really nice car,” says Robert Bardwell, a high school counselor in Monson, Massachusetts. “Test drive the school to make sure it’s the right one for you.” Prospective students should compare their chosen schools using information such as costs, financial aid, graduation and employment rates, and the proportion of students whose financial needs are met. Unbiased, third-party sources of information provide the most accurate comparisons. In fact, experts caution against relying on schools’ self-published information, which is often misleading. For example, a school might claim that its students receive $15,000 in aid but doesn’t specify that most or all of the aid is from student loans. Apply to several schools. Students who plan to attend college right after high school usually complete applications for admission during the first semester of their senior year. Experts advise that students narrow their choices to at least three schools but no more than seven: Fewer than three limits a student’s financial aid options (and chances of being accepted at all) but more than seven shows that the student failed to research schools well enough. The selections should be based on a student’s research and include at least one “safety” school, an affordable option that would most likely admit the student. By applying to several schools, students will see multiple financial aid packages that allow them to make an informed decision—and will position themselves to negotiate for more aid from the schools to which they are accepted. “Applying to one school limits your options,” says Bardwell. “You might not be accepted, or their financial aid package might not be what you expected.” Usually, the least expensive option for most students is an in-state public school. But students shouldn’t dismiss elite schools, such as those in the Ivy League, based solely on price. These schools typically have large endowments from which to provide substantial aid, much of it need-based, allowing them to lower the cost of attendance for individualstudents. This aid sometimes makes such schools more affordable than public options.

Financial aid packages may include any combination of gift aid, such as grants and scholarships; borrowed aid, such as student loans; and self-help aid, such as work study.

Apply for financial aid

Prospective college students vary in their economic backgrounds and abilities to pay for school, but they all have one thing in common: To get financial aid, they have to apply for it. Financial aid packages may include any combination of gift aid, such as grants and scholarships; borrowed aid, such as student loans; and self-help aid, such as work study. Students can access most types of financial aid only after completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). But completing the FAFSA does not make students automatically eligible for all forms of gift aid. Students must research and apply separately for scholarships and some grants and waivers. Complete the FAFSA. According to experts, all prospective college students, regardless of financial status, should complete the FAFSA. This application must be completed annually to determine a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid. The student’s financial need is greater in one of either two situations, or both: because of the high cost of attendance or the student’s (or family’s) low income. Almost all colleges use the FAFSA to evaluate student need when developing financial aid packages. A

“Completing the FAFSA is free, easy, and may open up financial aid options, such as state and institutional grants, that you may have not considered.”

student’s financial need is based on the information that he or she (and his or her parents, if the student is a dependent) provides when completing the FAFSA. Student and family finances are calculated as part of each package. For example, schools expect the student and his or her family to cover certain expenses, such as housing, food, and books. Families that cannot meet their expected obligation from income may choose to close the gap with private or Federal PLUS loans, which are also available to graduate students. At many schools, the financial aid package may change based on the school’s finances and the student’s accomplishments, among other factors. FAFSA forms become available online January 1 for the academic year that spans July 1 of that year to June 30 of the following year. So, for example, the FAFSA for the 2013–14 academic year became available January 1, 2013. Students are advised to complete their applications as soon as possible after forms become available. Certain types of aid, such as grants and work study, are sometimes limited or disbursed on a first-come, first-served basis. Yet some students postpone until the FAFSA deadline nears or, worse, don’t bother to fill out the form at all. That’s a mistake, says Chris Greene of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid. “Completing the FAFSA is free, easy, and may open up financial aid options, such

as state and institutional grants, that you may have not considered,” Greene says. Apply for gift aid. To become eligible for many federal and state grants, prospective students must first complete the FAFSA. But students usually need to apply for other gift aid, such as scholarships and nongovernmental grants, in addition to filling out the FAFSA. As early as possible, students should apply for any gift aid for which they may be eligible. Application-weary students might be tempted to skip the forms for gift aid, but experts say that those who take the time are often rewarded for their efforts. “Applying for gift aid is hard work, but it pays off,” says Tammy Dodson, a high school counselor in Aurora, Colorado. And if they receive a scholarship or nongovernmental grant, students must inform their school’s financial aid office. Depending on the amount of the award, a student’s financial aid package might change. For example, a large award might reduce or eliminate a student’s proposed need for student loans.

Financing a college education

According to NCES, nearly 80 percent of all full-time undergraduate students received some type of financial aid for the 2007– 08 academic year, the most recent year for which complete data are available. On average, these students received $12,700 in aid, mainly in grants and student loans. This was almost enough financial aid to cover the average cost of a public 4-year college during that academic year, but it was far less than the cost of a private one. After students have received the financial aid package from schools that accepted them, they need to determine whether each school is affordable. They can calculate the real cost of attendance by adding up likely expenses— such as tuition, fees, housing, food, and books—and subtracting out any federal and state grants awarded in the financial aid package. (The package might also include loans, but because these must be repaid, they will not reduce the true Encouraging achievement by individuals and teams is at the cost of attendance.) heart of GKN’s global drive for excellence. awards. Many scholarships have websites that explain all of these details. Others might list a phone number or email address of someone to contact for information. But experts caution students to beware of scholarship scams. One giveaway includes those that require an application fee. “Never pay money to get money,” says Kantrowitz, the financial aid website publisher. Students should check every scholarship against thirdparty sources to ensure its legitimacy.

These loans come from the Federal Direct and Federal Perkins loan programs, both of which are administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Federal Direct offers a variety of options. The most common loans it provides are Stafford Loans, which may be either subsidized or unsubsidized. Subsidized Stafford loans are

Borrowed aid

Borrowed aid is any financial aid that a student must repay with interest. There are two types of borrowed aid: federal and private student loans. Federal student loans. To help make college affordable, the federal government extends educational loans to both students and their parents. According to NCES, during the 2007–08 academic year, nearly half of full-time undergraduate students received federal student loans, for an average amount of $5,400. Federal student loans offer a fixed, low interest rate; a 180-day grace repayment period after leaving school; and flexible repayment options. Students may also be able to defer or cancel some of their federal student loans under certain conditions. Students become eligible for federal student loans after they complete the FAFSA.

available for up to a specific amount, currently $5,500 per year, to undergraduate students with financial need. Unsubsidized Stafford loans, which are for college students at all levels regardless of need, are available to undergraduates for up to $12,500 per year currently. And while a student is in school, the federal government pays the interest that accrues

on a subsidized loan—which currently has an interest rate that is half that of an unsubsidized loan. Federal Direct also offers Federal PLUS loans up to the cost of attendance to the parents of dependent undergraduate students, as well as to graduate students. But Federal PLUS loans have additional fees and the highest interest rate (currently 7.9 percent) of all Federal Direct loans. The Federal Perkins Loan Program offers low-interest loans to college students with exceptional financial need. Undergraduate students may borrow up to a specific amount, currently $5,500 a year, but there are limits to the total amount a student may borrow. Not all schools participate in the Perkins loan program. Private student loans. Private student loans come from lenders such as banks, schools, and employers. Federal student loans almost always provide better terms, but the most competitive private loans offer terms similar to Federal PLUS loans. Each private student loan has its own requirements and terms, which are determined by the lender. Private loans are usually available only to borrowers who have good credit, and they sometimes require someone else, such as a parent, to cosign. Students may have difficulty finding and comparing private student loans because there are so many different lenders. A few websites host databases to help with making these comparisons.
